For those of you who live in the Bronx you know that there are very few BBQ places in the area.The only other place(in the Bronx) I’ve been too was Hudsons smokehouse. Which you can read my honest review on them.So as I start my review I like to have a BBQ standard I’m comparing it to.Dinosaur BBQ. Mighty Quinn’s bbq Hill country BBQThese are all great bbq joints in Manhattan and they all serve Ribs,Brisket, pulled pork, sausage..Johnsons Bar-B-Q ReviewThe Spot:Its very small located in the south Bronx. No seating its like a to go only restaurant. Its relatively clean. 4 out of 5 ratingService: I’d say standard. They were attentive they acknowledge you they pay attention. 3.5 out of 5Food portion: They give you alot almost too much 😔its very rare I can’t finish a plate or order. This was one of those occurrences. 5 out of 5Meat Quality: Okay I’m probably going to ruffle some feathers here..Here’s my honest view. The ribs were cooked to the point where the meat falls off the bone.That’s usually a good standard for ribs. I prefer mine with a little bit of give.I don’t think they use a dry rub.I love flavor and different blends. Unfortunately I didn’t really get that here. Although the meat is good they need season to add more character. Now the mustard sauce. Most bbq is accompanied with bbq sauce with a tomato base. Johnsons uses a mustard base. I personally don’t like it. 2.5 out of 5.Sides:I had black eyed peas, rice, Mac and cheese. Nothing special here. 2.5 out of 5Price: I got a pork rib meal for $21. Its on the low end for bbq but I go a lot of food. It’s probably the best Value in 5 boroughs. But I’ve got more to go.5 out of 5Overall if you want quantity and a good price this is the BBQ place for youWhat they can work on: Make a tomato based bbq sauce. Work on developing a dry rub.They can explore more. Its a bit too vanilla. They need to standout and give people a reason to make long trips from other borough , states, and countries.Its not common in New York but Beef Ribs are actually really good. I’d love to see more restaurants have this as an option
My mom wanted some Johnsons tonight being that she is sick and cant really taste anything abd dint h e the energy to cook with chemo treatments. She has been a customer since the age of 20 yrs old now she is 77yrs. Anyway Mr. Johnson had customers so I waited. But did see him prepare a plate of ribs that filled the enture container. I tasred the ribs they were nice and crisy and the Mac n Cheese was good. The greens needed a little more sesdonings but nothi g uou couldnt do at home. 4 stars for needed update inside, more seasons on greens.

Great food, great service and outstanding taste
Food was amazing. For the size of the portions and the price you can’t beat it. I got the fried chicken collared greens and Mac and cheese. Mac and cheese was okay but still good I’d probably get the yams next time instead. Fried chicken was really good, but when I saw the ribs someone else ordered my mouth was watering. Each plate is enough for 2+ people. My only complaint is it takes a while. You’ll be waiting at the counter even if it’s slow. The man takes his time but it’s totally worth it. Just don’t go for lunch at work unless you call in ahead!
Off the hook. I had the ribs fried chicken collard greens and yams. WASHED it down w lemon aid chocolate cake i cant wait to go back again. It was slamming. LOVED IT.
I am from the fifty years ago crowd. Old G. Then Richard Johnson, Sr. Was the owner and ran the kitchen. The food was deeeliciuos. I was shocked and very surprised that my class mate Richard Johnson, Jr. Inherited the store and ran it 30 years ago! I have not eaten their food in recent years.....but I have heard about it. A trip is in order to this place . dated 05-19-2021, Wednesday.
I feel bad to have to write this but:Collard greens were bland, no salt or seasoningBaked Mac was mushy, blandYams were ok. I added salt and maple syrup though.Chicken, was a big portion, but it just tasted fried.This restaurant is like his family didnt have the heart to tell him his food wasnt good, and it went too far by him opening the restaurant.
Ive been coming to this place since age 12, and from that point, the food is top notch. Ive been gone from the Bronx and moved to Richmond VA 6 years ago and Ive been dying for some real soul food. The spots out in Richmond is ok, but nothing beats Johnson. I know when I come visit, this is my first stop. Go get you some Johnson food yall, place is a 10.
Best soul food restaurant in the Bronx by far, great service ,love the sauce its awesome collard greens, yams , pork ribs and macaroni 😋 a enough to feed your love ones off 1 plate thats how awesome, also great price its worth it
I admire this place! They prepare first-cleass food, they have a nice menu, The chef in that place is a real pro, I like a lot tasting all their dishes. The food is consistently fresh, the attitude towards the customers is helpful. I often go to this place and I not even once was unsatisfied. I recommend it to all my friends.

I used to eat here all the time about 20 years ago and the food was slamming. I ordered a chicken dinner today and I must say I am very very disappointed. The food has no seasoning on it not even salt. Oh my. I hope they get better. It’s been a staple in the community for many years.
This restaurant is a nice restaurant if youre interested in beef ribs smothered and special mustard sauce this is the spot for you if youre not interested in beef ribs and waiting a long line because the entire neighborhood apparently loves his ribs then this is not the spot for you I totally did not expect mustard to be the topping sauce suffice it to say the wife did not like and I subsequently gave it to the Stray Cats in the neighborhood again this might be a spot for you if youre into some beef ribs smothered in mustard 🐻
My family and I don’t get to go often, but when we do it is never a disappointment. Mr. Johnson’s ribs are delicious and he always has a kind word. He is always full of joy and cheer and his delectable edibles make me just as joyful. Truly comforting soul food that does wonders for one’s soul. Forget chicken soup, go with Mr. Johnson’s. Today is Ribs day.
I been going for Johnson’s BBQ food for over 50 years since I could have my own money as a kid, always been the same good soul BBQ food! Thank you Johnson’s for being a part of my family!
Food is quite good but dont expect posh service, accommodations or consistent customer service. But for NYC thats usually how the best places are... a little hole in the wall, none/limited indoor seating, no sense of urgency, sometimes rude or no customer service...but youre glad you came. Ive been coming here with my parents since I could remember and outside of the reduced menu (there were more choices @ 15 years ago) ther food can still hit the spot. Those of you that dont know about mustard style sauce on your ribs broaden your taste buds its a good thing. I now live upstate and I decided to drive 2 hours for a few dinners @ 6:30 on a Tuesday. When I get there the owner was closing down and his explanation was that he decided to only do lunch that day... As upset as I was Im still a patron! I just make sure Im coming from work in the city so its not too far out my way should they handr an impromptu half day. Try it... its good food!
I have been coming here since the eighties. Never been disappointed. Best ribs and sides. Especially their bbq sauce. It should be jarred and sold.

The owner Duane was very disrespectful, Ive known him for years, and hes still arrogant and disrespectful, he takes, and talks to much to each customer leaving e Eeyore waiting in line for at least 15 min, QED when I complained he snatched mine & my sisters good away from us and said he doesnt want my business!! After knowing him for over 20 Yeats I realize hell never change, and Id rather eat somewhere else, where the atmosphere is friendlier and the food is better!!

Since I was 8 Ive loved this homemade delicious old school food! Mom used to get one order that fed all 4 of us. Very tasty indeed. I would give them 10 stars!
This site is my first choice site. Of all restaurants I know I prefere it most. I never miss an opportunity to go to this restaurant. Whenever I I need a good dinner, this is the place that comes instantly to my head. Great and diverse food and a large list of dishes.great staff members, and pleasant ambience. Also important, the price is reasonable. I recommend this spot with no hesitation.

Im still eating here after 25 years. Oh dear, I may be revealing my age but the food is that good and memorable. It helped me significantly through my pregnancy and after! Even my baby girl enjoys the sweet potatoes!

If you can get anyone to actually take an order you will most Lilley be told to come back because even at lunch nothing is ready! The owner is very fresh and disrespectful to women and def says inappropriate remarks to women who visit the establishment. Its not worth the dangerous trip to the south Bronx! I only went in there because i work in the area. I was disappointed with the fact that i couldnt just get a chicken breast. I got a whole half chicken on wheat bread when all i wanted was mac cheese collard greens and a breast!
Johnson is a lovely person, but I come for the food and sometimes its a hit or miss situation. The rids be all dry and hard to eat, so Half of it is garbage. But if you catch him on a good day there is nothing to complain about.
When you want a real southern dish, that is filled with scrumptious delights...Two meals in one...check them out
I love the ribs, he gives generous portions. But, reminds me of bbq places in the south. They talk a lot and take their time. Collards and yams are good, mac is not my favorite.

Came in late one Sunday night and received excellent service from Sammie. Believe it or not the food was still amazingly fresh as late as it was...Im Thankful. They have a returning customer and definitely more business to come.
Very disappointed in the quality of this food. Although the people there are really nice, its just upsetting that there are not really any soul food restaurants and this one that I have patronized is, though impeccably clean, can punch it up with the flavor and fall back with the grease.

I lived in the Bx for 38 yes I remember when the father was there and had the whole chickens & pig on the pit. Jr is running it now I think his name is Wayne. Ohhhhh cant forget all that food for a low price w/ that yellow SAUCE. 10 all the way across the board from Maryland.
The food was the worst. Just throw your money out of the window you will feel better. Just nasty no flavor bland a nasty after taste you cant get rid of my first and last time.

My father and uncles ate here and I’ve been eating here since I was a baby. Johnson’s will forever be my favorite and I don’t mind crossing the bridge to pick it up. Now my son takes his girlfriend to pick up food.

Bought a rib dinner after church. Sat in car and had a plate full of fat. Didnt like greens. Mc cheese cpuld use some more cheese. One thing. Dont let your wife .Girlfriend or daughter go in there without a man. Owner will try and get a number.
Ok? where do I began this time around...! I had been a costumer for over a decade but its only a once in a blue moon that Ill actually get some ribs from there.. Last time Ive had ribs here was back in about 2008... They were great then... So today I decided Ill go get ribs. I traveled way across town mind you. When I walked in the place the owner he at first was talking about his relationship experience with younger women this type of talk was so uncalled for I dont need to know youre too old to keep up with younger women.. But anyway🤔 his loudness and his whole demeanor was insulting to say the least. When it was my time to step up to the counter I could not believe the way this man carried on as if I was a piece of rib and cornbread and he just wanted to slop me up and take me to London because YES he asked if he can take me to London... I was just so embarrassed and he would not stop... So I got my two orders or ribs and carried on when I got home to try them they were horrible burnt and over cooked... Sort of like old meat you just keep reheating.... I wont throw this place under the bus just yet although he doesnt deserve my money after today but for $28.00 in New York City thats a great deal... Buyers beware inspect the meat before he throws that horrible BBQ sauce on it... Get your own sauce at home any store bought is better than there.... And if you are a lady take your man with you when you go.🤔😏
The food is definitely worth it. Not a place to sit and eat but the owner is very friendly and likes to chat. The portions are sizable and generous. Nice little neighbor establishment definitely show and support.
Johnson bbq is a Soul food restaurant thats been around over 50 years since I was a child. The father passed away so its now owned by the Son. They are known for their Mustard sauce for the Chicken and Ribs.
Love this place since a kid. Miss when they used to give you sliced bread with order lol.

My family has been going to Mr Johnson when Mr Johnson Sr was alive and 6 corners was the shop to be Ive been coming on my own since 2010 and the food is as just as good as I remember it to be service is always friendly and Dwayne makes u come back but overall theres not enough Stars so Ill give them the rest thats missing 🌟 🌟 🌟🌟🌟
The foods not bad but the bad part about it which is really a turn off they have no damn potato salad you got every other side dish but no potato salad what kind of business you running and dont have no potato salad but you have the time to make everything else surprised but not surprised that he still in business.

2022-04-16I was so excited to try this again (after 15 years) beings that my mom use to take me all the time as a kid and everything use to be so full of flavor. This was my 1st time ordering as an adult and I must say that I could not find any kind of season on anything. I ordered the chicken meal with 2 sides.. Mac and collard greens and a iced tea. The Mac is mushy and tasteless, the greens were not seasoned at ALL.. even the big piece of fried chicken had no taste. I had to end up ordering again from somewhere else. I’m sorry but this place needs a lot of help.

2022-05-25I was so excited to try this food. I must say oh no the food was awful no taste or seasoning at all I ordered the chicken with 2 sides yams tasted like water not candied at all and the collard greens nooooooo flavor as bland as could be , the Mac and cheese the noodles were so soggy and the chicken was overcooked and had no flavor and the ice tea yuk, tip for this restaurantSEASON YOUR FOOD the one star is because I just had to rate it something

2022-06-21Buyer beware, if you come in here asking for a chicken sandwich (aka boneless chicken/chicken patty with some sort of cheese, vegetable or dressing on a bun) that is not what you will recieve. What you will get however is three peices of fried chicken on untoasted wheat bread and some sauces on the side. Seriously? This seems to be a very big neighborhood spot and I was confident of the quality as a result, However, biting into bone in chicken in between bread does not a chicken sandwich make, unless youre making the argument that since its chicken and between bread its a chicken sandwich. Super dissatisfied, wont be returning.

2021-04-28If youve lost your sense of taste, this place is for you. I was really excited about trying their food. It was beyond underwhelming. Ill venture to say... disgusting. Large portions of bland (no)soul food. The ribs were blah! It needed seasoning. The mac and cheese was like mush. It had potential but was over cooked. The yams and collard greens should have stayed in whatever field they were farmed from. My ancestors are truly angered by this blasphemous rendition of bbq. Admittedly, the peas and rice were good but what a waste of take-out containers.If I could take away 5 stars to make this review a negative, I would.Youve been given a heads up, go buy chinese.

2022-01-27Today at Westchster medical center we received a catering order. We all loved the food it was amazing. We plan on having many more catering orders in the future for our company gatherings. The customer service was extremely professional, they make you feel like you are a part of there loving family business.5 star rating!
