I am obsessed with this place. It has a lot to offer. I almost always leave with something. I am a huge fan of japanese magazines so I try to look for cute ones with the free gifts. I just got into mangas and althought they are overpriced over amazon theyre sealed with plastic so you know you get something in amazing condition. The one thing thats really annoying is that they tend to put the barcode sticker on the actual book itself instead of the plastic. So I try to scratch off the sticker and it wont help. Like get a sticker that peels off easily then!! I had bought magnets one time and the stickers were a pain to remove. With alcohol wipes it helped though. Its also somewhat tight in the store its understandable because it gets so busy. I really feel like If i wear a backpack Id be knocking things down left and right. Also, as someone mentioned the people working here are kind of stiff &seem cold. Could be cultural though.Overall, would recommend this store. Very easy to spend a lot of money so need self control.
Service was nice and the place itself was so gorgeous omfg it was literally the prettiest and cleanest store I’ve ever been to. It was a pleasure to visit this place one day before Halloween to pick up stuff with my sister and friend. 4 stars because the things are severely overpriced, it would probably cost around $5~$10 less if you order it online, but the experience of picking the stuff out in person is fresh and it is Times Square, so it’s expected. Things cost about $10~$200 average depending on what you’re buying, but a manga should cost around $13. Theres a beautiful cafe on the top floor with the mangas and anime merchandise and the middle and basement floor just has cute Japanese magazines and stuff. Tax is around $4 also, but overall decent experience.
I came here last week and was pleasantly surprised with the manga they had, both in japanese and english. i also like the anime merchandise and figures they had here, as well as kawaii stuff too. down in the basement they had magazines plushes and stationery. i would come here again to buy something :)
Kinokuniya is so popular, there was a line to get in on a Saturday morning. We waited across the street in Bryant Park and had breakfast, then enjoyed a few hours of browsing books on the too floor of Kinokuniya. They have the biggest collection of anime books, posters, toys, kits, accessories, and even a super cool bakery. The main floor has mostly books in English and is more of a traditional bookstore. The basement is very interesting with thousands of stationery items and also books and magazines in Japanese. Definitely worth taking the time to visit, explore, enjoy.
The place was really great, its located at a good part of the city and had an extensive selection of books not only just from manga (which I mainly look for), but also from Japanese literature and well-known writers as well. It was surprising to see all Japanese books there too, which is great for native speakers and those looking to learn the language. They had a tasteful decoration of artworks signed by manga authors which were a delight to see. Plus there were a lot of cool merch and figurines there as well which you normally wouldnt see as well as a cafe of sorts. My only complaint is that it was really crowded and it can start to feel really cramped at times. So Id recommend going during the week and office hours when theres usually not many people around. Also the figurines are a little on the pricier side. Besides that its a cool place to check out and buy books and manga from. These are the few things keeping me from giving it a perfect rating. So 4 stars for now.
Super cute, really nice variety, and very clean inside. Security took their job seriously- made everyone use hand sanitizer and was careful with ppl exiting and entering the store. There is a while floor of English books and the lower level has Japanese books, stationary and lots of cool souvenirs.
Great selection for many fans of Japanese culture and merch. I go for my pens, binders, notebooks and whatnot I have to have adorable at my desk. Love nicely curated design books selection. Taking one star off for how cramped the store is. The basement level in particular you cannot walk without nocking something off the shelf.
Do you like manga and other Japanese things if you said yes ... this is the place for you amazing selection of manga both in English and in Japanese! Also if you like stationary they have a really fun diverse selection of that downstairs! And for everyone else if you just plain like books ... well they have regular old books too. Great place come dig through!
Of course theres no alternative to Kinokuniya but thats okay because you dont need or want one.The selection is phenomenal, in both Japanese and English books, plus the stationary and all the other cool Japanese merchandise they carry.Staff are friendly (in Japanese fashion, theyll leave you alone so if you want something you need to ask and then theyre extremely accommodating.)Store can get pretty crowded despite its size but even long lines go a lot faster than you would expect.
Absolutely love this store. I can spend hours in their perusing the book shelves or descending downstairs into my second heaven. I love office supplies, and this specialized store carries only the most prolific brands from the top of the line Japanese manufacturers. Literally can spend $500 in a matter of minutes, if I wanted to (and have on one occasion). The selection of fine writing utensils is matched only by the McNally-Jackson store on 8th st. Seriously this store is a great combination of reading material and office supplies that you can literally find now where else.
It is an awesome place. My family and I spent hours in there for my sons 18th birthday. The 2 girls who work at the Cafe were rude as h*ll. But, everyone else who works in the actual store part were extremely nice and polite. I will return but maybe not to the Cafe if the same 2 girls are working there that served me before.
It has every manga but it’s pretty expensive! and it gets really crowded with a big line outside after 1 pm. The mini cafe just recently opened again. There’s also a decent amount of figurines. Also the customer service is good, if you’re looking for a specific light novel or manga, you can ask and they can help you get it easily.
Beautiful bookstore with a wide array of English and Japanese books selection. The anime and manga section had everything you could desire or look for. The books were of exceptional quality with some coming wrapped or without the plastic wrap. The figure and souvenir selection was very good as well. The anime/manga section was well decorated and in the same floor was a cafe which Ill make a separate review for. They had one of the best Japanese learning and even English learning (for Japanese) book selections. Kanji books, grammar, JLPT, they had it all. I myself picked up the second level of Genki along with the workbook which i was looking for. They of course had other books such as Minna no Nihongo and what not. When purchasing Genki i was asked if I was a college student. Reason being is that if you are a Hunter college student you get a discount. So any Hunter College students looking for Japanese learning textbooks I recommend passing by here. If you are Japanese seeking Japanese books youll probably feel at home with there even being a kids Japanese book section. There were also supplies like books, pens, and more options. There even was an office and decorations section. I could spend the whole day at the store since its three floors filled with amazing products. The lady that attended my sale was very nice and respectful as well. Will come back here for my next New York trip.
If you love anime and Manga, this is the place to be! Ive been coming here for years and its still my favorite spot to go to. The bottom section of the store has a huge assortment of gift ideas, a long with imported magazines from Japan. The main floor specializes in interesting books, both English and Japanese! The second floor is where you get a huge collection of Manga in English and Japanese, collectibles and a Cafe!Must go to place for anyone I to the Japanese culture!
My favorite store in NYC. I love the different sections of the store there are. Theres so many unique things to find. I also love that they have the option to buy Manga in Japanese, something I cant find so easily in New Hampshire so I definitely stocked up before my next trip to NYC!
Nice selection of books. Staff wasnt too friendly, but they were helpful. Was disappointed to learn they didnt have any Hobonichi items - I was here a few years ago and they had tons. Why the change? Im not a fan of anime/manga, but this is still a cool place to check out. I could spend forever in there, honestly. Book prices were around what youd spend at Barnes and Noble.
I’m a huge fan of Tokusatsu such as kamen rider, Ultraman, Godzilla. I stopped by the store today and found they do carry some cool books/Magazines I got a small Godzilla book which features all Kaiju monsters from Godzilla movies I really love it . Now I feel like re-watching the movies 🍿
This place is soooo fun to look around in. It has an amazing collection of books, manga, graphic novels, magazines, and figures. My main issue with the store however is it is always too crowded, and, that its ridiculously over priced. For example, I found an art of style book that I was interested in purchasing, and it was about 45 dollars. However when I looked up the same book on Amazon it was about 30. Overall Kinokuniya is a great experience and very fun to visit, but you should compare prices online before you buy anything.
This is a great bookstore with lots of books and magazines in Japanese. There are also books in English, however not as many. When you walk in they ask you to use sanitizer on your hands before going further. I usually end up browsing knitting and sewing section of Japanese pattern books. They have so many items cat/dogs centered - from scissors, pens, pen cases, bags, pouches,... On my last visit I got caps for my cats and a sewing book. I have been going here for years. The only thing that changed through the years is the little store to the left of the downstair staircase that used to sell leather bags and sake cups is now selling pusheen toys.
This place is a hidden gem for all the anime lovers out there. They have cool comics of almost all the anime shows that I watch. Its a 3 floor store, 1 floor above and 1floor under ground. Middle floor has books sectioned according to genre with upper floor dedicated to Manga(comics) and some Lego kind figurines. They have amazing figurines from famous shows.
Absolutely a book store worth going to if you are in New York. The selection is broad and vast for a book store with a second floor and a bottom floor. They sell manga in Japanese, American literature, Gibli merchandise, and anime figures. It also has a nice tiny cafe with a good selection of Japanese snacks and food. The atmosphere of it is nice and quiet, providing a much needed break from the sound of the city. Overall the store is an incredible experience in terms of a book store, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
Upon first entering you are greeted to a nice cozy environment and overall not a whole lot of people. The first floor is dedicated to a mixture of books from Cooking in Japan to global history and architecture. Also has a mixture of misc. items like plushies and book bags. The basement is dedicated to stationary items and Japanese literature including books to teach yourself Japanese. The 2nd floor is dedicated to manga, light novels, comic books, and figurines with a small cafe towards the front.Overall is a solid bookstore that I recommend anyone go to if they are looking for a new read or even some pens and pencils and notebooks.
This was a great Japanese-themed book store a decade ago. Its still nice, but much more crowded and dirty, with long lines at the registers and the bathroom. The cafe used to replicate the experience of a Japanese cafe serving matcha, lattes, etc.; now, its shabby, often out of ingredients, and run by rude employees.
A wide variety of books on all floors! The entrance was colorful and had a wide variety of books in English. The bottom floor had Japanese books, cute novelty items, keychains, postcards, calligraphy pens, and pretty fabrics. The top floor housed both raw and translated manga, figures, and even a small eating area to the right. Overall a very nice place I could have lost all my cash at if I had brought more money haha!
I was so excited to visit this store and it did not disappoint. As a huge anime/manga fan my only regret is I couldnt buy even more than I already did from their huge selection upstairs. The basement has an amazing selection of stationary, plushies, and Japanese texts.Do yourself a favor and stop in.
The walking space is kind of limited, its usually crowded, the inventory for kids isnt so great and the Manga is rarely in English but overall it was a nice experience with the kids and checking out was quick, I was even able to exchange a book with no issues. Just wish it wasnt such a small walking area since it does get really crowded.
Weeb/artist Paradise the second floor has a bunch anime merchandise, figures, manga they even have a yaoi and yuri section it also has a Cafe that sells really good Japanese food and drinks and the bottom floor has a ton of good art and craft supplies ranging from pencils and pens to needlefelting and the middle floor is a cute bookstore which reading isnt really my thing but I still find that part of the store nice too.
People talk about this place like its some kind of manga mecca- and it definitely had a lot! However, Ive seen places with more title variety. I think this place is truly set apart by Japanese language books and manga, Japanese café snacks, and the Japanese stationary it sells in the basement.
A very fun and cute bookstore that has everything an avid manga reader could ask for. Not only do they have the most popular and newest releasing manga available in both English and Japanese, they also have a lower floor that sells Japanese stationary as well as accessories, game-relevant items, and plushies. For the non-manga book enthusiasts, they have a wide range of books on the first floor available. They will definitely see me here again.
Downstairs area has a pretty big selection of cute Japanese stationarys, as well as practical work/writing goods like folders, binders, pencil cases, bags and so on. Also has stuffed animals, toys and some mystery box type things.Has Japanese magazines, instruction books (sewing, cook books, knitting, health and exercise, etc).Ground floor has American books, and a collection of Japanese books translated to English. They have some really good books that I recommend checking out. I read memory police there (just standing in the isle for some hours and no one bothered ne) and the ending had me wandering around staring into space for quite a while.2nd level had Manga and stuff like that last time I went which was a while ago so idk whats up there now, but probably hasnt changed.
An incredibly fun store to shop/browse in, however, I found the stock variety and availability to be more limited than I had anticipated, and the product prices were no more competitive than what you can find online/within many other stores. I also found the customer service to be a bit cold and unfriendly, but overall itKinokuniya New York was a generally fun store to browse, even if just for the experience. The layout of the store made it easy to independently navigate (for example, regular paperbacks on one floor, manga and graphic novels on another, with Japanese and English materials then further distinguished by placement within distinctly colour-coordinated shelves), and the addition of the little in-store cafe provided a nice, homey touch.Overall, I would recommend visiting Kinokuniya New York, particularly for manga/graphic novel/Japanese culture/merchandise lovers, even if just for the fun browsing experience, but for more serious book lovers, I would recommend heading over to The Strand for a more affordable, diverse and pleasant book shopping experience.
Honestly love this, first visit in nyc and i just HADDD to go there after reccs from my “anime” friends lololol!! the keychain section was a little messy on the second floor and it took me a while to find a specific one in the sea of them. if you’re a manga enthusiast and like anime this is far one of the best places in nyc
Update 12/29/20With the ongoing pandemic, social distancing rules are put in place so there is a minimum capacity. You most likely will have to wait in a line depending on the day and time, when I went it took about 20 minutes to get insideThis place is like heaven to me. I frequently go here with my friends when I have money. The main floor has books in Japanese and English while the top and bottom floors are my personal favorite. The bottom floor has all the stationery that you can even think of, as a student and an artist that obviously is one of my favorite things. If its stationery or a specific Japanese stationery brand, its most likely there. The bottom floor also has Japanese magazines and other miscellaneous things, very nice to explore. The top floor I hadnt realize existed until the second time I visited! The floor upstairs Japanese manga as well as English manga along with plenty of anime merchandise. Figures, buttons, shirts, anything that you may be interested in in terms of anime exists here. This is truly my favorite store
Great anime book store with lots of stuff from Japan. All the Japanese books you want. Basement was a nice place for good Japanese school supplies. First floor was just mostly regular English book. Second floor is the anime floor with all the manga and figurines you want with a small cafe attached to it
Three floors filled with books, magazines and dictionaries in Japanese (basement), books in English (first floor), and manga, light novels and figures that make you feel like you are actually in Japan (third floor). You will need a good bag to carry the weight of all the books you want to buy. Good selection for the people who is learning Japanese, youll find from Minna no nihongo to JLPT 5-1 books.
Its a great book store with loads of manga and anime merch. The little cafe is also very nice. There is an escalator up to the second floor, but only stairs down. The second floor is where the manga, anime merch, and the cafe are located. They sell manga in both English and Japanese, with the majority in Japanese. There is an elevator down to the basement as well as stairs. That is where you will find more books and writing tools. They sell some very nice fountain pens as well for all price points.I suggest you check it out when you have a chance!
Awesome book store, Im not fan of comics or Manga, but I think this is a paradise for those who like these stuff, I bought a manga book for my niece and I take a look at all the incredible merchandise they have there, the prices are reasonable. It is very close to time square.
There was so much Japanese literature and other media. The second floor is full of manga and anime merchandise, the first floor has Western authors, and the basement has Japanese books & magazines. I could easily spend an hour or more browsing, and thats without the crowds this place draws especially on weekends. It also has great views of Bryant Park. I recommend signing up for their monthly emails to keep track of store events like sales or limited products.
An amazing unique experience for anime, stationery and overall book lovers alike. The selection of art books is well curated offering great books such as the Taschen line of History of Art/ Artists books (even) in smaller format. The childrens area is quite lovely with many different books to read and/or activity books. The anime area is wow so well put together and they have beautiful (and expensive haha) magazines, guide books, art books, and of course mangas! Though my favorite part was the lower level since it has japanese magazines, some japanese childrens books and starionery everywhere. I was able to find Pokemon mags that were even sold out in Japan and their prices were just around the same from there. The stationery is very expensive though so keep that mind. Overall it was an amazing experience and I hope to come back again some day.
Love love love going to this location across from Bryant Park because it has the legendary Vagabond mural by Takehiko Inoue!!! It has a lot of the same selection of manga and artbooks as other Kinokuniya locations, along with plastic wrapped English manga if you like your manga to be untouched and in pristine condition! They also have lots of anime/manga merch like keychains, shirts, pins, charms, accessories, etc.Basement floor has all the magazines, felting, hobby, and stationary goods.Definitely recommend going here if youre an anime/manga fan or if you want to take a pic with the legendary mural!Tip: there is only 1 restroom and the line is crazy long. Youll probably have better luck at a restaurant or fast food chain!
A Legit Japanese bookstore! The only place I get my textbooks and the best spot to find Asian pop culture related merch! The main floor (where the entrance is) has reading/educational books. Upon entering due to the pandemic you are kindly asked to use hand sanitizer and social distance. You will not be allowed in without a mask. The public bathroom is also located in the center of the floor towards the back wall on your left. Again due to the pandemic it is closed.. When you make your way to the back you will see an escalator that will take you to the top floor and you will be greeted by wonderful art. The top floor has anime, manga, music and a small cafe with seating (not accessible during this time), overlooking Bryant park. The bottom floor has note books, organizing trinkets, pens, magazines, Japanese text books, kanji flash cards, a childrens section and a small shop by the stairs. There are information desks on all floos but you can only purchase your items on the main level. Dont bring any kind of merch into the cafe because it isnt allowed. Many of the bookstores workers stay at the bottom floor organizing. They have a membership but im not aware of the benefits. Due to the pandemic they have a certain set of store hours, which is Monday to Sunday 11am to 7pm. Store capacity is limited.
The NYC branch of the popular bookstore Kinokuniya is located directly across from Bryant park. There are many branches in the US and the NYC location is our favorite for East coast. The NYC Kinokuniya has 3 stories: Level 1 (street level) has the normal magazines, books, and toys (English and Japanese), Level 2 (upper level) is the anime floor with a small cafe (Cafe Zaiya), and Basement (lower level) has stationary and childrens books. The staff is extremely polite and carry about with a Japanese bookstore demeanor that is very different from B&N. The toys on level 2 are priced slightly higher compared to internet orders direct from Japan, but if you dont want to wait 2-6 weeks for your product to arrive, there is a nice selection of the more popular items (great for gifting). Our favorite section is the large stationary selection in the basement. Although JetPens is convenient for ordering Japanese stationary, theres nothing like seeing and testing the actual product in person, especially when youre checking out a new line of pens. Price difference between Kinokuniya and JetPens is negligible, especially when you factor in the inconvenience of being stuck with a set of pens that you just simply dont like after trying out.
Amazing huge store! There’s 3 floors where you can find almost anything you ever wanted here. Souvenirs, postcards, craft stuff, magazines, manga, dvd, puzzles, books, posters, etc. They also have a cafe on 2nd floor so you can take a rest in between of your search through.Price points I would say quite high (even comparing to the same store in LA), but you’ll definitely find unique items; the ones you won’t find anywhere else unless online.
This the spot where you go to get manga action figures and any other type books you want because this place gives you a lot of variety on each floor. on the top floor you will find the manga and theres a spot upstairs where you can eat your lunch and they have a vendor up there if you trying to buy anything. All I would say is they need to get more variety on their wall scrolls. When I was there they had no dragon ball z scrolls or full metal alchemists.
Very cool Japanese store. They have a little bit of everything. The first floor is books. There’s a huge selection of Japanese and English books. In the basement is more books and stationary type items. On the top floor is Manga and comic books. Huge selection of all types of books and toys. There is also a cafe you can get food. Definitely check this place out if your visiting or in the area. It does not disappoint.
Great staff and very helpful! Lots of great Japanese books, anime, toys & art supplies! There are many other items in the store. Kinokuniya is a hidden gem of Japan on our island!! Its also great to just window shop for the cultural aspect and coffee shop on the second floor.
If I could, 2.5 stars. Overly crowded. Staff can be very nice and helpful. But, sometimes they follow and stare. Not sure if its a cultural thing or what. Security guards would always follow. When I collected manga and loved Japanese culture as a teenager I loved this place. Had the newest material and merchandise at the time. Including stuff from over sees. I had the same issues back then and as an adult I get the same treatment. As a teen I thought maybe Im loud? But realize other groups are just as loud and no one else was told off or followed. As an adult Im still stared at and followed.
SUCH a wonderful bookstore, especially if youre a fan of Japanese culture and cartoons. I am planning on going back to pick up Christmas gifts for my family. Highly recommend this place! Oh, and they also have a wonderful cafe where you can find a wide variety of delicious, well-priced coffees, teas, and Japanese baked goods.
Its like a little bit of Tokyo in your own backyard. If youre into anime which I am, its an exciting place to be. Clean and friendly atmosphere which can include a small array of soft music along with a little cafe in case youre hungry. Its like a Barnes & Noble on a Asian scale.
Japanese book store with a huge selection of products such as manga, art books, CDs and Blu-Rays. They also have books in English including manga and traditional super hero comics and collectibles such as action figures and statues. You can also find a large assortment of art supplies and crafts in this store.
I went to the bookstore for anime JAPEE.TOKYO that’s great and love it do always next time.I will have to goes to the same kinokuniya bookstore compare almost of the nyc but other out states New Jersey in edgewater.this nice place seem silence, I’m alone and look around wow remember before several last years yeah !
What a great store with a great collection of manga and books. Very nice looking cashier. Looked like a part 3 jojo’s character so he must have been egyptian. He helped me clean out my bank account by giving me the entire collection of nagatoro that they have. And my the looks of his hair his last name must have showered earleir that day. Mmmmmmm tasty :D I hope he’s not a adc on league of legends.
Wonderful book store with many things to offer. The store has three floors. The lower level contains stationary, plusses, and mainly Japanese books and magazines. The main floor contains books in English for adults and kids. The third floor you will find a variety of Manga both in English and Japanese as well as a wide variety of anime inspired merchandise
My first time walking into a big bookstore and I was looking for manga. It was a really great experience. I think it’s a really great place for people who like anime/manga!! There were lots of manga to choose from!! (All the anime stuff and manga are upstairs) There’s also regular books and stationery too! The only thing was the line was really long haha, but other then that I recommend!
This place was a literal goldmine. It has everything! In the basement level - If you like pens as I do, this place is fantastic. Traditional pencils, mechanical pencils, customizable pens, fountain pens. 😍😍😍 Among this, there is a ton of arts & craft books. There is just so much to buy!!Main floor - traditional bookstore with a great layout, both easy to peruse and aestethically appealing to the eyes.Upstairs - OMG, manga galore! Both Japanese and English available. If youre a collector of nenderoid figurines, theyve got it here too. 👌Theres also a cafe upstairs. If youre an anime or manga fan, this place is a must.
Cant say enough good things about this place. If you like Japanese culture this is the place. The 1st floor is all books in English of all types. The basement has books in Japanese so if you can understand it its awesome! Also if you wanna practice thats awesome too! They also have nice pens and other novelties from Japan down there. The 2nd floor is all manga and comics!
Kinokuniya is a unique bookstore with tons to offer. The base floor houses an extensive collection of books and magazines (in Japanese) as well as a wide variety of fine and specialty pens and pencils from Japan you wont find anywhere else. The middle floor contains more common and local books and associated gifts; and the upper floor contains myriad manga in both Japanese and English in addition to a small assortment of Japanese snacks and premade meals.
This is by far my favorite place to visit when I come to NYC. I’m a huge fan of video games, anime and manga and I definitely geek out everytime I come here. I particularly love the top floor, which has a great selection of manga and anime merch, as well as a nice little cafe. The middle floor is mostly just regular books, and the bottom is more arts and crafts and stationary things. My one critique is that it does get a bit crowded and overwhelming, but other than that, this place is amazing 10/10 recommended.
This wonderful book store neat Midtown Manhattan is such a delight to go to. Paperbacks, hardcovers, trinkets, toys, action figures, and more-it is such a sight and amazing atmosphere upon being in this store with 2/3 floors worth of merchandise, it is no wonder why this niche bookstore would be here. On the 2nd floor, with accessible elevator, there is a cafe that overlooks Bryant Park.
I. Love. It. Here.My boyfriend as of now has showed this place to me and I fell in love! I had always been a little geeky with books and even Japanese manga! So when I had seen the place you could see my excitement! The place is a bit pricey but books tend to be! The best part is the cafe built into the store, they provide known Japanese quick bites such as Onigiri and a variety of breads along with food you may sit down and eat like whole lunches! Even go as far as to dine in Bryant Park which is directly across the street, a cute park! I love this place, even went to day!!
BUYER BEWARE!! My friend turned me on to the store and I LOVED their stuff. All sorts of fun and interesting things. But. In my enthusiasm I accidentally bought two of something and THEY GIVE NO REFUNDS. So they keep their money. You can get exchanges but I spent a lot and they refused (2 small items). Less happy with this store than initially.
Best small style bookstore in New York City. It is like an oasis from the hustle and bustle. There is a ton to choose from the regular generic books. But upstairs there are comics as well as the main draw English and Japanese manga! Downstairs they have pens, stuffed animals, papers, majority of books in Japanese. I will definitely be coming back the next time Im.in New York.
I was here waiting for my brother. Great place if you love Japanese merch. Top notch Pens, stationary, cartoons, etc. Really close to the Library! Theres a coffee shop on the second floor. Omg, the treats they have. Yes, you can have lunch here. If youve never been to a Japanese Bookstore/ coffeehouse and happen to be in NY. This is the place to be!
Kinokuniya is such a great place for Japanese culture lovers! The first floor is generally English books, the basement is filled with Japanese books and cute Japanese items and the third floor is all anime/manga. They previously allowed drinks in the store but recently the security guard has been stopping us so finish your drinks before you come!Edit 3/7/21:Love the place but the line is wild on the weekends!! The line is down the block when google says it’s “less busy than usual”
The store is great and has a huge selection of books in English and Japanese, as well as toys, trinkets, and hobby supplies. The cafe upstairs is wonderful, though sometimes crowded. The upstairs is mainly anime, manga and video games. The bottom floor is hobby, stationary, artisan products, and kids books. The first floor is popular books. While they have a manga section it doesn’t overtake the rest of the store.
As an avid anime and manga fan, this is my go to place with a wide selection of merchandise from manga, figures, clothing, posters and other valuables that can find it’s place somewhere in your home. There’s something for everyone and the basement sells amazing pencils and other items that are cool. Some of the pictures below are items I’ve purchased here.
So cute and clean!Stopped by to have a quick bite and a passion fruit slushii. Looove!!!! The dining area is smaller than expected, but no one ever waited for a seat. The area was super clean, outranking most dining areas Ive been to tbh. The colors and music (read: ambience) made it impossible to be in a bad mood. The food was being restocked when I came in, so super freshh 😛😛 loved everything and will definitely return to shop!
Kinokuniya is a really cool bookstore with a wide selection of reading materials, stationary, pop cultures figurines, and more. There is a good selection of popular translated works for those looking for Japanese books. The top floor is stocked full of various manga, figurines, and even a cafe. The bottom floor consists of more books and a wide selection of stationary. Lots of good merchandise to purchase and for a reasonable price.
This is a great bookstore tucked away in the middle of New York City. They have a wide range of Japanese books, art, movies, manga, toys, and even a small cafe that serves tasty treats. They also have contemporary books and gifts as well. So, theres something for everyone when you come to this bookstore. I think its a must for anyone who loves books or manga.
The selection here is amazing. Ive also been to the one in NJ in Mitsuwa and the one in Chicago in Mitsuwa but this one has the most product selection by far. Cafe Zaiya is also a nice touch. The figurine display case on the upper floor was cool. I looove stationery and the lower level had a bunch of amazing stationery and Japanese books. I especially liked the wax seal stamps, calendar books, and pen selections. They had this interesting coffee bag clip that also had a scoop on the end. There was also a small shop in the corner that sold jewelry and handbags and there was a cute pink wallet I wanted there. Main floor had funny products, kids books, activity books, some touristy books, and the cashiers desk.
This place is a great bookstore to buy Manga and Japanese books. They have three floors full of merchandise and books and plenty of things for most people interested in Japanese culture, reading and items. The third floor has some pretty hard to find art books brand new for a great price. They also have plenty of manga in both English and Japanese. It was an interesting stop and I enjoyed looking through their selection.
One of my favorite places to go in the city. There is manga and anime merchandise on the top floor, regular books and other merchandise on the ground floor, and so much more in the basement. Would 100% recommend coming here, very polite and wonderful staff! Great place! :)
Always love heading to Kinokuniya as its a heaven for otaku like me, upstairs is nothing but manga and a selection of premium figures on display that tempt me each time. Also upstairs is a small cafe that sells great melon bread and chocolate corners as well as other Japanese snacks and treats, whilst downstairs features a large selection of Japanese magazines and other varied selections.

2022-01-28A bookstore with a wide variety of things to choose from and niche/interesting things to pick up. Downstairs is a regular bookstore like your regular Barnes and Noble with some added Japanese sections with cookbooks, photography, history, and much more. Upstairs is where youll find manga, anything you could possibly ever want; in Japanese and in English. The only downside is that they put their pricing stickers directly on the book instead of the shrink wrap. If you can overlook this then this place is an amazing visit.

2022-06-28I was amazed by all the Japanese collections in this store from the books to the toys, souvenirs, key chains, collectibles, school supplies, and more. They have the best anime books and toys funky toys as well. I couldnt find posters and its hard to find help on the floor. Their are books in the Japanese language which I found amazing. Checkout time can be long even in weed days. Prices vary depending on the item you are buying. There are other cultures items as well.

2022-04-24Came here yesterday as one of the stops for a trip with a college club I am in and they have a great variety of American books as well as Japanese style/manga books. The prices were sort of expensive but that’s New York for you, but they did have some stuff that was pretty reasonably priced too. I would definitely come back to this store in the future, especially since I would like to see the second floor of it. During my time in the store I pick myself up 2 books and a souvenir pin too. I highly recommend this store especially if you’re visiting New York.

2022-06-25A nice bookstore for both regular books and manga/light novels. The first floor is a regular bookstore with a very nice structure consisting of both English and Japanese books. The second floor is full of manga and light novels in both Japanese and English with a structured layout so you always know where everything is. They sell figurines of varying sizes and also sell Japanese snacks that taste really good. The only downside is that you might not always get the books you were looking for, but thats every bookstore. This is very nice and visually pleasing place and I definitely recommend coming here.

2022-02-15This is a really fun and unique bookstore. Definitely recommended if you just want to visit a quiet and interesting place in New York. The basement is a Japanese bookstore selling Japanese books, stationary and lots of other kawaii items. I know that it literally looks like an authentic Japanese bookstore of Japan. It is a very fun place to go to do and to explore different books and Japanese accessories and items. I spent about 2 hours on my first day and I actually went back the next day just to continue to look at their items. It is a very unique experience and we are enchanted by how cute the items were. I bought my cat a bonnet! The ground floor is mostly regular English books and the top floor is for Japanese manga, figurines and other items for otaku lovers. You are actually not allowed to read the mangas because they are sealed which is a good idea I think. They also sell Funko Pops and other cool figurines. There is also a delicious small café upstairs. They sold t-shirts from popular animes such as Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen. I only wish that they had my size though, most merchandise were large.

2022-01-17The place was super cute. A wide variety of animes related things and mangas. Three levels in the store. Staff was pretty calm. Kinda hard to find out of all the people there. They sell mangas, anime coloring books, tapestries, chopsticks, and even funkopops. Overall it’s pretty nice, clean, and organized

2022-03-27Clean place with friendly staff. You can find so much in this 3 story location. Bottom floor has amazing stationary items and language books. Middle floor had a ton of different book, travel guides and other knickknacks. The top floor has some japanese food and manga galore with a ton of figures and anime pics/bags/posters ect. Its a must go to place if any of these things catch your interest.

2022-03-27Come see why & how Barns & Noble & other book sellers failed so miserably when such a cool Japanese bookstore can thrive so prosperpusly and is loved by most young people. Its quite an experience! Stationary in the basement, Anime & Japanese cafe on 2nd floor. Its a must-visit in Manhattan. BTW, the taro boba was very delicious.
