5/31/22. I went to Kopitiam to try their the Oh Chien (Oyster Omelette). Fresh and hot. No shortage of cilantro 🌿topping. Plenty of oysters inside the egg omelette. Sambal sauce on the side.I should have ordered a side of rice since I found the Omelette too “rich and salty” by itself. Either way, I ate the whole thing and would say 4/5 stars. It was really flavorful. 😋😋😋
Kopitiam is a quaint restaurant serving authentic Nyonya (Chinese/Malaysian) style food including kopi tarik, Kaya butter toast, hainanese chicken, muah chee, and nasi lemak. The Belachan chicken wings were crispy, slightly sticky and delicious! The kopi tarik was strong yet sweet, and a great accompaniment to the Kaya butter toast.I appreciate that they require patrons who want to dine in to show proof of ID and Covid vaccination records. The restaurant is small but they use plexiglass barriers between most tables where physical distancing isn’t possible.Would definitely want to try more items from their menu!
Can’t believe I never heard of this place before. Not only is the food amazing, they have great coffee the food comes out extremely fast. I was surprised with the number of people doing take out orders but it makes sense since the turnaround was so quick. I had the tok tok mee which was huge with amazing pork pieces and probably the best fried pork wontons ever. I have to double check and see if I can get them as an order by itself. The Hor KaShai coffe was really good too. It comes in a resealable bag. The pandan chicken was such an amazing surprise. Huge chunks of chicken that were super moist on the inside. No idea how they did it but it was great and is a must order along with the chicken jerky buns. The bread was sweet and had tons of delicious butter. There is so much I want to try I have to plan multiple trips back.
We visited Kopitiam twice during our two day stay in NYC.The drinks here are absolutely amazing!! Props for placing these drinks in cute plastic baggies that are much more portable than usual. We ordered the Kopitiam Sunrise during the first visit, which was a very refreshing, citrus-y drink. It impressed us so much that we went back a second time and tried their other drink special, the Lychee Bandung along with the yuzu and white peach sparkling drink. The drinks alone are 5/5.In terms of food, we ordered the lobak appetizer and the nasi lemak. The lobak was very flavorful and filled with juicy pork filling. The coconut rice in the nasi lemak was addicting. The sardines were extremely salty though. Both dishes were saltier than desired which was a major turnoff during the meal. After finishing dinner, we felt extremely thirsty for several hours. Overall 4/5.
Our travel companions were looking for a Malaysian restaurant to try out for their first time in NYC and they found Kopitiam. For dine-in, you will have to show vaccination card and ID.We had kaya butter toast, nasi lemak, fish ball soup, kiuh talam, and teh tarik and teh-o for beverages. Hes from Malaysia and he loved the dishes here. We enjoyed everything for breakfast; portions were huge! :) Staff were sweet and quick with orders too.
Hair :(It would be wrong for me not to post about it otherwise the problem will not get fixed its not that big of a deal and not that big of a problem its an innocent thing that happens all the time everywhere just somewhere more and somewhere less...I wish it would happen unless here... Because the food is great...Its just that in the middle of my meal I found two hairs stuck to the noodles as you can imagine thats not a very pleasant experience ...They offered to redo it or give me a refund...what I really wanted them to do was to change the long term take on this wearing a head rag I think is moreover a sure way to go to prevent this
Came here on a Saturday with a group of 4 and it was super busy. We waited for about an hour. The seating is a bit of a mess because you have to wait for a table and then you have to go up to the counter to order the food and wait in line again. But the food made up for the wait. The kaya toast was my favorite and the noodle dishes were so good! The hainan chicken was served warm so that was nice. The service was good despite how busy they seem to be. The portion for the coffee was generous and food tastes very homey. I recommend coming to check out this place if you’re in the area and want a nice home-like meal.
I wish I can rate this place 6/5 stars, overall a fun experience! Wow, my experience with this restaurant was excellent. When you go inside, you scan the menus QR code, and order your food at the front intercom. The staff was super sweet and excellent, and was very patient when I took my time figuring out what to eat. I paid using a credit card at the front. Then they give you a number and you can sit down where ever you want. They bring the food to you, but you have to clean up after yourselves. I still left a good tip in the cup at the front though! The food was also amazing, I got the Belachan Wings, Oh Chien (oyster omelette), and the Bek-Kopi (Penang white coffee with condensed milk) and Kopi Tarik (hand-pulled Penang black coffee with condensed and evaporated milk). First of all, the coffees were absolutely delicious, and they were served in a really cute bag with a re-used plastic bag as a holder. Like seriously? Thats so creative and cool. The food was also really delicious, and the sauce they came with was finger-licking good. Will definitely come again to try more Malaysian food!
Came here for dinner after hearing all the hype, but I unfortunately left disappointed. I got the Beef Rendang, the street style Chee Cheong Fun noodles and the Pandan Chicken wrapped in leaves. The beef and the noodles came out barely room temperature, and the Pandan Chicken was undercooked. The flavors were on point, but the temperatures were a big disappointment.
Hmmmmmm…. Foods were not that good as my expectations. Oh chien was too salty. Bak zhang should be heated up a bit, it was still cold and hard 🥲. Sesame noodles 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ spicy oil with sesame seed not sesame sauce💀. Lychee rose whatever drink was too sweet. Teh Tarik (milk tea) was perfect, thank you.
Been here a couple of times to try as many items as I could. So far all the plates that I ordered from the Snack section have been delicious. Favorites are the pandan chicken, lobak, and baclacan wings. Also love the kaya butter toast and tok tok mee - egg noodles were springy and delicious. Cant wait to go back to try other items on the menu.Btw all these items came out pretty fast but there are specialty dishes that take 20 min to prepare. The atmosphere is chill. You order and pay before you get your food. Workers are friendly.
I dunno about you, but when you say Malaysian Nasi Lemak the national dish should come with at least one fried chicken leg or wing on the side, not just anchovies right? Or maybe im wrong but thats what i have been getting since ive been to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur many times already and i really love Nasi Lemak. But this one is very dissapointing not to mention the rice is not well cooked. However, the Haianese chicken i took home for to go is not bad at all.
The ikan bilis is so correct I could cry eating it.The sambal is 90% there but I sense it could be just personal taste. I can do with it spicier.I am from Singapore and this is my go to for South East Asian food. The kopi (coffee) is really good too. Smooth and tastes of home.I havent had a bad meal here yet and I always look forward to it 💚💜💚💜💚
Overall, the food is ok. Some of the food hit the mark and some dont. In my opinion, the Nyonya Pork Dumpling really missed the mark entirely. It is tasteless and does not have the right ingredients. It is missing the spices and winter melon for the little sweetness. The beef rendang,, Pan Mee, fish ball soup is good. I took away some points due to the store cleanliness. The restaurant really need some good cleaning, especially the bathroom.
The started by checking my vaccination card. Then asked for my order. Lychee rose tea, butter cake and nasi lemak. The nasi lemak was excellent, actually spicy and crisp, lots of flavor. The lychee rose tea was great with elements of both. It got a little better as it took a few minutes to muddle together. The cake was only ok.The price was less than $20 for all three items, and was out of the kitchen in less than 10 minutes. Overall impressive service, price, and food.
Important reason for not giving a higher score at the end. Read carefully. This place has been on my list for a long time. Finally I made it on a Thursday night. It is a little cute eatery type of restaurant. You order and pay at the counter to get a number then someone will bring your food out. You can sit anywhere that is empty, indoor or outdoor. Yes they checked the vaccine card if you prefer indoor.Food was great. Loved the desserts and snacks. If I lived in that neighborhood I would go often. However, after I finished eating and packed leftover, I used the restroom. More specifically, the hand wash area outside the actual toilet rooms. There were so many little flys 🪰 or flying bugs 🥶🥶😰😰, like more than 10!!!! To be honest, it was not nice at all!!! 🤢So that’s the reason I only give 3 stars. I would’ve given more if I didn’t use the washroom 🤷♀️
Hot food selection is adequately enough for a snack. I’m here more for the sweet deserts. Staff is always full and very accommodating. One of my order didn’t come out and they made sure to gave me a free item. The only thing I wish was that their viet coffee would be a little bit stronger.
This was the first time we tried Malaysian food and it was a success! We ordered the nasi lemak, pan mee with soup, belachan wings and chicken jerky bun. Overall, the food was great, although I thought the chicken jerky bun was just okay and the noodles in the pan mee were too stiff for my taste. I wanted to try the milky rose lychee mochi but they ran out. The nasi lemak and belachan wings were my favorites. It was a whole-in-the-wall type place. Even though we read online somewhere that its better to order food before sitting at a table, you lose out on preferred seating if you do that. Only 2 people were visibly working on a Monday night so no one is really manning the tables. If you are with a friend, its better for one to stay at the table and the other order inside. They bring your order right to the table but you need to bring your dishes in and wipe your own table. We didnt really mind any of this but I wish we knew before going so we knew what to expect. The food was really great so that definitely made up for the rest of it. And it was pretty inexpensive too! Hopefully they expand because it looks like a popular place. Cant wait to try more dishes another time!
Kopitiam is a Malayasian cafe in the Chinatown / LES areas. there is seating inside as well as outside. the cafe serves a variety of coffee / tea drinks as well as brunchy-y savory and sweet eats.there’s a good amount of worthwhile things to order here however i’d highly recommend the “white coffee.” the coffee beans are apparently white. got an iced one. it’s a smooth and sweet coffee with hints of bitter notes. it’s refreshing drink perfect to combat the tail end of summer’s heat and humidity. get it to go and stroll around lower Manhattan—served in an easy-to-sip-from bag. very portable and easy to drink. curious to get a hot one when the colder weather rolls in. white coffee is $5ish + tip.
Hands down an NYC favorite. Incredibly good Malaysian food and lower-than-reasonable prices. I especially loved the Kaya butter toast, Nasi Lemak, chicken jerky bun, and Lobak. Don’t remember which dessert we had, but it was very sweet for my taste. Friendly staff, run-down location, unique experience. It was recommended in the NYC edition of Drift Magazine and a Malaysian friend confirmed this place is great. I’ll be back.
The food here is what we in Singapore call “atas” or fancy. It’s authentic, but it’s authentic fancy versions of the typically more chaotic & delicious street versions of these foods (wanton Mee, Nasi lemak & kopi). Good enough to satisfy a craving, but because I know what I’m missing (true local food), I wasn’t fully satisfied. Still worth a try though!
We found this place on Newyorker magazine and definitely loved it. We had pan mee ans kaya toast for two people, with coffee. It’s definitely enough if you’re not starving. People are very nice!! Bathroom is beautiful and interior is homey and warm. Prices are also very reasonable.
I visited for the first time and Im so happy I did! The food was very authentic and delicious, plus the kaya tasted like it could be homemade. I went with a friend and we got nasi lemak, belacan chicken wings, pulut panggang, kopi tarek, and kaya toast. Pulut panggang was sooo good (very shrimpy, which I love, but something to note.) The nasi in the nasi lemak was so nice and coconutty. My friend said the wings were so flavorful, the dipping sauce was not needed. The space is small, but we went during late morning on a Friday and had no issues getting a table.Im so glad kopitiam reopened after covid. I definitely will go back.
I need to go back cause theres so much great and cheap food that I would love to try! I got the spicy sesame noodles with one of their coffee drinks (it was a hand pulled black coffee with condensed milk) and it was delicious! Great prices and super satisfying plus the service was super fast and so kind!
I ordered Hainanese Chicken and Sambal Water Spinach. As someone whos from the same region as Malaysia and Singapore also frequently visiting these countries, the hainanese chicken was no where close to what it should be. It was a tough and hard chicken. While they may have poached it, its definitely not fresh enough to maintain the tenderness of how it should be presented. The rice flavor was on point. The sauces compliment the chicken. If you look at the picture, you can see the texture of the dry chicken. I would rate the chicken a 1 out of 5.Sambal Water Spinach - I really enjoyed this and would happily order another one. I loved it and would rate it 5/5I decided to give them a total rating of 3/5 because I want the owner / restaurant to succeed. I am glad I know I can get great malaysian breakfast. I applaud them for expanding their menu but the quality as other reviews suggested is taking a toll on taste. My chef friend who is also a good friend of Kyo looks up to you and I hope you revisit the cooking method / preparation
Informal, order at the counter, grab a number and your food is delivered. You also will bust your own table. Lucky, they have people wiping down the community tables. Very nice people working here.Food: mixed from delicious to average-ish. Their noodle dishes are good, but the broth didnt lift my brow. The Tofu skinned sausage was a party. I would definitely order that again. The chicken bites on on bone were good - crispy, hot and flavorful. I was definitely underwhelmed with the wrapped rice. It just seemed weak in its flavor profile, subtle, likely too subtle. I wish my experience was better here. I would try it one more time.
Excellent food. First visit takeout: kaya butter toast, Malaysian style half boiled egg (both 5 stars) and the lobak (4 stars). 2nd visit dine in: curry puff (4.25*), chicken pandan (4.25*), lychee bandung drink (3.75* good but too sweet), pulut inti sticky rice ball (3.75* decent but not worth the carbs), and kuih lapis cinnamon butter cake (4.25 stars).
This was a treat! I’ve never had Malaysian food until today and I was impressed. The portion sizes were nice and the warmth of the food and the environment was inviting. Look for them because they are located in a small spot and easy to miss. Due to Covid they had options for both indoor and outdoor, sanitization stations and temp checkin. They also ask that you fill out a form so they may contact you if any cases of Covid come up.Next time I’d order more of the items but it was very filling. They have drinks and desserts as well. The staff was courteous and informative.
We ordered the nasi lemak, kaya butter toast, pandan chicken, oh-chien, and the white coffee in a bag! The white coffee was pretty intense but it tasted amazing! Not a big fan of the nasi lemak (bc i dont like anchovies) but the kaya toast, oh-chien (oyster omelette) and pandan ckn was really good! Definitely coming back and trying the other items on the menu!Follow @strwbrrryboba on insta for more food recs :)
Even as a vegetarian, this place is one of my favorites (although it’s probably a lot better for pescatarians!). My absolute favorite things are the cold milk tea, kaya toast, and the CRISS CROSS MUSHROOMS. The mushrooms are so flavorful and chewy! And the kaya toast… I could eat that every day. This place is so so so good and you don’t want to miss it. This is my go to spot for lunch on Jury Duty too.❤️❤️❤️
So good. Small place overall and awesome vibe. It was one of these restaurants where you know the food is good. I had soap with spinach, pasta, mushrooms and dried onions. I also had a triangle chicken. Everything was so filling. Would definitely go back and price is super affordable.
The food came out relatively quickly and they were all so good! We really loved the milo flavoured iced coffee and the curry puff a lot! I also liked the muah chee - expect a big portion if you are ordering muah chee! We had nasi goreng, chicken wrapped in pandan leaves and they were all super yummy
Is it the best Maylasian Ive ever had? Nope. But is it still super good and hits the spot? Yes, totally. Also the people are BEYOND friendly. Id call them out individually but honestly its like the entire staff is just incredible. They even give good recommendations, none of which have ever dissapointed. I love the variation and that you can get so many things too. Overall, great place.
Im always on the lookout for a Singaporean/Malaysian restaurant. I like Nasi Lemak, but always disappointed with the ikan bilis (tiny anchovies) because Malaysian make it with a sauce. I like it dry fry with peanuts which is what I got today. The oyster omlette was good reminding what Ive eaten in Singapore. Its different from Taiwanese style of cooking. They also have some nonya kuey which I didnt try
Cute Malaysian spot serving snacks and meals as well as drinks options (non alcoholic). Service is friendly. There is indoor and outdoor seating (although we got ours to go and went to the nearby park). We tried the kaya butter toast, lobak, Bak Zhang, kuih talam, ondeh ondeh and unsweetened soy milk. Everything was great and Id have it all again! Looking forward to trying more of the menu.
Malaysian specialties in a somewhat crowded and slightly chaotic (during busy times) but nice room. My husband is Malaysian so I have been to Malaysia and had Malaysian food many times. We sampled a few different dishes here and generally pretty decent but I don’t think they quite hit the mark.Second visit 03/05/20. Still busy around 8 pm. Out of several popular dishes again. Can I make a suggestion? Please order more of the ingredients for those popular dishes so that they are available. We enjoyed the food that we had.
Arrived at 12 and ordered what I thought would be a simple: Kaya Toast and white coffee. Did not imagine I’d still be standing there 30 mins later and seeing other folks get their food first.Their food is decent but the wait made it not worth the travel to visit this spot
The food was just okay and not up to what Ive had in DC. The redeeming item are the drinks that come in what look like hospital drip bags, and the Pandan Chicken. The Nasi Lemak was really dry. The place is also very tiny for dining in and cleaning service between tables is inefficient.
Kopitiam is such a hidden gem!!! The restaurant is cute and comfortable, and the food is real, authentic Malaysian food. Everything was super delicious and reasonably priced. The Teh Tarik tea is a must get—Soo flavorful! My favorite dishes were the kaya butter toast, pandan chicken, and fish ball soup with vermicelli noodles.
You walk up a set of stairs (about 4-5 deep ones -not handicap friendly) to find this small, apparently clean, and busy coffee shop, that also serves food. We love Malaysian food, and yet their menu and dishes on various tables looked uninspiring, so we only got drinks from here. A chocolate malt and a ginger with brown sugar. While waiting, we got a cup of water from the pitcher they have out....it was sink water, and this made me wonder if there is a difference between bathroom sink water and kitchen sink water, but this was definitely unfiltered bathroom water.Anyhow, we both wanted to return our drinks, they barely had any flavor to them. Mine tasted like water, and I didnt taste any ginger or brown sugar...so they redid it and unfortunately, it didnt taste any better. 2 small cups of badly flavored water named something else for $8+The staff seemed ok.... The atmosphere was nice. Nothing stood out. Oh, but I did add a star because they use paper straws instead of plastic straws. I love that...is it worth coming back for...sadly, no.
Unlike some reviewers I didn’t have any issues with customer service. They make it upfront that you bus your own tables. When we had questions about the menu etc the waiters were very helpful. The food however was underwhelming. It’s not a SE Asian restaurant where there are lots of mains offering. Which is ok. But what they offer on the limited menu should be absolutely perfect and they were mostly ok. Nothing was bad at all. Just all very mediocre :( there was a line and we waited about 15min for lunch on a Saturday.
Such great place! I have walked by this little Malaysian cafe a few times but never stopped until last weekends Friday when I really needed to sit dow somewhere to relax a bit and let me tell you this place was just what I needed. The prices are very good, the food was tasty and the service was amazing, such a friendly and kind team. Bathrooms were very clean and the overall music and decoration of the place invited me to come back to read a book, work a bit on my computer or sit down with a good friend. The place is just great, Loved the casava and coconut milk cake 🥰.
Excellent Muah Chee. Generous portions and peanuts. Would have loved if the pieces were cut smaller (more surface area for peanuts). No big deal since they are so easy to cut.Their curry puff has a decent filling- slightly runny with some spiciness, but their crust needs work. What they had was something from a fried sesame ball. Slight crunch with a sticky-chewiness to it.
Food was authentic, with good sized portions. The flavor of the nasi lemak was delightful, with the ikan bilis being crispy and spicy enough to compliment the rice. The samabl was crisp and clean. Fishball soup had just enough flavor that one didnt need the soy and chilli. Definitely would visit again!
MALAYSIA 🇲🇾Eat the World NYC review:Over the summer, Kopitiam moved into a larger space with room for the kitchen to spread its wings. The menu has followed suit and they now offer much more, but all the favorite food and drinks are still available. The focus is small plates of snacks and noodle bowls that show off Peranakan cuisine, the rich mixing of Chinese and Malay culture that has happened in Malaysia for decades. Like a storage unit or a basement, it seems the extra space finds a way to get filled quickly, as more customers are coming and Kopitiam continues to burst at its seams during popular hours.
Kopitiams Malaysian fare is complemented well by its casual ambiance, charming (but not flashy) decor, and quick service - the focus is all on the food.Id certainly recommend the Hainanese chicken. The meat was literally falling off the bone and is some of the juiciest chicken Ive ever had. The coffee is also brilliant for my fellow caffeine heads; dont be shy to try Kopitiams cultural take on sweetness and flavor! The other dishes my friends had also seemed great. The prawn noodles looked flavorful and the mushroom dish I tried a bite of (youll know which one it is) was absolutely brilliant in presentation and taste. All in all, I had a great time and an even better lunch here. Especially given its close proximity to the nearest subway line, Ill definitely be coming back!
The place was pretty packed but service was quickly. Everything we had was pretty good, our favorite was the veggie drumstick. Nasi Lemak was very flavorful, wish there was a piece of chicken or something to go with it though. The special of the day was Cheong Fun, it wasnt bad but the chilli sauce they added was quite spicy and overpowered the other sauces. Will visit again if Im in the area.
Love this place since they serve malaysian style coffee shop traditional delicacies. Try my favorite tasty nasi lemak (coconut rice with spicy peanut anchovies) kaya toast (coconut custard jam) and mua chee (glutinous rice with crushed peanut & sugar) & a glass of kopi Tarik (freshly brew coffee with condensed milk) They have more seating in a unique traditional south Asian ambience. The staff were friendly.
I first visited Kopitiam when they were in the smaller location and served mostly drinks. I am SO happy that they reopened and expanded!! They kill it with great combinations of spice and textures. I’ve mostly come here for dinner, but breakfast is great too. The Kaya butter toast or the French toasts are great options if you like sweet things, but I’m all about the spicy/savory Chilled Spicy Sesame Noodles (with an egg!) or the Pan Mee. Both are super flavorful and filling. Also, don’t forget to try their drinks! The pulled coffee is rich and comforting, but I also like their teas and see tons of people enjoying their homemade soy milk.
It looks like they moved locations not so long ago so they have more food offerings and I thought their space was pretty cute. These noodles were exactly what the promised. Lip tingling spice with cooling slices of cucumber, eggs and a generous sprinkling of sesame seeds and a nice helping of rice noodles. I personally am a bit weak when it comes to burning spicy and it was much spicier than I expected although I could still enjoy the flavours, I found myself stealing bites of coconut rice from the husband to try to cool my mouth down. I definitely would like to return since I’m a fan of fast casual restaurants and there is so much more on the menu to explore and the chicken wings the husband got were delicious.
Overall a decent place if youre craving Malaysian food. A little pricey though... Pan Mee was a little dissapointing- the noodles were very thick cut and the broth could use a little more flavor. Nasi Lemak was disappointing- the coconut rice was not fragant, anchovies were very chewy instead of crispy. Oh Chien was the better food item we ordered.TLDR- go there if you’re craving Malaysian food but do not set your hopes too high.
The food here was delicious without being too expensive. The service however, was felt inconsistent. Upon making my beverage order, the attendee immediately gave me a bottle of iced water. The staff should also remind patrons that they are responsible for bussing their table before leaving, and should set up a proper system. The dirty dish bin would contain napkins, uneaten food, as well as all of the proper serving ware. After the first round, I decided to order more at the counter. I ended up staying there for a good five minutes while the staff behind the counter were chatting among themselves.
One of the best Malay restaurants in NYC! Pandan Chicken was really good but ended up being the least favorite dish of the night! Belacan Water Spinach was on point, probably one of the spiciest versions Ive tried so beware. Oyster omelette was delicious - who woulda thought egg and fish sauce could be such a great combo?! Actually, this version is reminiscent of Chiu Chow and Taiwanese representations of the same dish, definitely worth a try!
I’m obsessed with Kopitiam and am convinced that they have mastered the recipe for Lobak. I’ve never tasted it the way they make it.All their dishes are amazing, make sure to try the Nasi Lemak and the Michael Jackson.A perfect take on Malaysian street food, it definitely took my mom right back home to Malaysia.
We ordered the Nasi Lemak and the Days Special, which I cant remember its name. We also ordered the Traditional Penang White and Teh Tarik coffees and the mochi desert. Everything was generally good, but the Traditional Penang and the mochi were excellently balanced. The rice in the Nasi Lemak was a little too dry for me, but thats how its supposed to be made because you need to mix in the saucy umami with it. What a gem of a spot in the LES.Note if you plan on sitting and eating, there are only 5 stools inside and a bench outside, so on cold days its not ideal.
Went for lunch today. I did enjoy my dishes. I will post my receipt. They didnt have some of the items on the menu. I wanted to try the white coffee, but they were out. I believe if its on the menu, it should be available. I also dont like self bussing your dishes. I did really enjoy the kaya toast. Iced coffee was too small, but good. I would go again to try one or two more dishes.
Good casual Malaysian eatery in Chinatown. I was rather disappointed that their Assam laksa soup was not ready and ordered the Pan Mee instead which was unremarkable. Their massaman curry was better than Nonya in flavour. Their oyster omelette was probably my favorite dish.
Nasi lemak, duck tongue, and the kaya toast were the highlights. dont mix up the kaya toast with the french toast. it was really good. somewhat crowded on a friday night at 8pm. the iced tea with condensed milk was mediocre. space is limited, order at the counter, and you have to bus the table yourself. not saying this is a negative - just setting expectations for folks.
Excellent little place. Came here wanting to taste Malaysian food. The cashier recommendations were excellent. I had the Nasi Lemak and it was delicious. I thought the place was really small, so is more a takeout place. The portions are good for the price and the desserts are excellent.
Im from Singapore and I thought the flavors of the dishes were pretty on point. It was a good place to satisfy my cravings for food from home. The only complaint I have is with the value Im getting from each dish for the price - there were not many pieces of oysters in the oyster omelet (orh jian) and too few pieces of pork in the kway chap (and no pig intestines??)
After visiting Singapore I have to say it’s been hard to find the same Kopi Coffee outside of Singapore. Kopitiam has been the closest so far.Had the Pandan Chicken and Lobak snacks today. Both items came through quickly even though the place seemed packed. Very juicy. Only thing bad which I took a star off for, is lack of hot sauce availability.
Nice little restaurant that won a price recently. However, food was not very much to my liking. I liked the sweet rice, but did not like the oyster sauce omelette and the noodles that much.Place is very trendy and nice by the way. So have a look and decide for yourself!
Had dinner the night Bon Appetit announced their 2019 Hot Ten with Kopitiam landing at #6.Abit of a wait but worth it. Currently its cafeteria style where you order then find a table. So food came out fast which was great. I assume such operations will not be the case as its popularity grows. My top picks were the pan mee and nasi lemak. The pan mee broth is reminiscence of a mothers home cooking with the hand-pulled noodles and the unami-rich anchovy broth. There certain items that are are weekend only but cant wait to go back to try the other items!!
Ill preface this by saying that I am a white dude who spent a lot of time in Singapore and fell in love with the food at the hawker centers and kopitiams. So I am two degrees of separation (Singapore instead of Malaysia, and Im not even Singaporean) from really being able to say anything about this places food. So take what I say with as much salt as you want.So I love the atmosphere of this place, the kopi is fantastic, and I love any opportunity to have the foods that I fell in love with in Singapore. You could give me Singaporean/Malaysian food of ANY quality and it would probably make me cry from the nostalgia. That said, I feel like the food itself here is actually not that good. The first time I came here I had the kaya toast, which was very different from what I was used to from Ya Kun Kaya in SG. I didnt prefer it, but that may be a SG vs Malaysia thing. The soft boiled eggs were spot on though. The second time I came here, I had the beef rendang (my absolute favorite) which was pretty disappointing. The curry puff, kuey lapis, and bandung were all pretty good. You can get mindblowingly good beef rendang in this city for barely more money than what they charge for it here, so there isnt much excuse. Again, love the kopitiam slant that this place has compared to other malaysian/SG places in the city, but I think the food itself could use some work. But Ill keep coming here for the kopi alone.
I tried this place after seeing several bits about it on YouTube and I was not disappointed. You will need to love anchovies to eat here though. Service was quick and the flavours were delicious. The prices did not match was is shown on Google though, they increased their prices.
This review is for their sweetened milk tea only. The tea was weak and not sweet enough compared to the tea I am used to in Malaysia and Singapore. The accompanying savoury biscuit is somewhat incongruous -- a digestive or round wine would have been more appropriate. It was not too busy when I arrived late morning, and the atmosphere was quite pleasant. Whilst I didnt order any food, I appreciated the small yet adequate menu, which suggested the cafe focussed on producing a few things well rather than many things badly.
Food was great, especially the tea pork noodles from the Winter menu. Was crowded during lunch on Sunday so be sure to come early to grab a seat. Nasi Lemak doesn’t have any meat in it, just anchovies, for those who are used to chicken in it like at other Malaysian restaurants in the nabe. Prices were a little high.
An all day casual Malaysian cafe in Chinatown that’s disrupting the culinary world, a worthy recognition as one of the 16 best restaurants in America. Yet on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, we stumbled in with no wait, spending about $20 on a filling breakfast for 2. The nasi lemak (a Malaysian dish consisting of coconut rice, cucumbers, a boiled egg, and a pile of chewy fried anchovies with soy-roasted peanuts) + chilled spicy sesame noodles + sticky rice with kaya jam among their other dishes are perfectly satisfying for any time of day.
Authentic Malaysian Food here! Quality ingredients, clean bathroom, friendly & welcoming. We tried the Malaysian national dish but the dishes other people were ordering looked wonderful as well! Also, try their coffee! It comes in cute bag (hot or iced) NOT overly sweet at all!! This place is a hidden gem! A lot of the chinese are selling or renting out space to Malaysian, Indonesian & Vietnamese establishments... so you will find a lot of that coming to this area...
So happy Kopitiam Re-opened and expanded their space. There is so much more seating this time around. The decor is absolutely cute!! So much natural light entering the establishment. Small tables in the back, communal table in the front and bar seats for people watching.Their food menu expanded as well and is delicious as usual the food is delicious as ever.Their cold and spicy sesame noodle hits the spot on a humid NYC summer day. The rose lychee Mochi is quite refreshing as well but I won’t traded for the star crushed peanut mochi.Though I do wish the portions are larger or have and option for a larger portion. Their to-go drink bag is absolutely adorable!!!
One of first stops in NYC. We were caught by surprise that this quality place existed in the neighborhood close to our hotel. The food reminded us of our friends from Singapore. Everything tasted great and it felt homey here. They do a pretty authentic Malaysian milk tea as well.
Very authentic Malaysian food though some of the dishes are more Penang flavored rather than the southern part eg Malacca or KL ;) no matter, it’s still such a comfort to eat here. Nasi lemak is A+, ondeh2 is a tad too mushy but still darn good and the ice black coffee is superb. I wanted the dinosaur milo ice drink but they ran out.
Growing up in Southeast Asia, the “coffee shop” or kopitiam experience was essential for community, a family breakfast treat, and getting your favorite bites on the go. I’m always looking for dishes like what I had back at the noodle stalls of Brunei, and Kopitiam certainly comes close to the experience! I’ll definitely be returning for this wonderful feeling of Home.
Love the food! But Please get rid of the dirt planters out side, or plant plants, it smell like dirt. Please being back a paper menu, at least stick one up for us to see. Not everyone has a smart phone. But food is amazing !Thank for the quick reply!! Thats wonderfull news, let me know when its done, ill come past and take some photos to it, for you.
Great Malaysian food! Highly recommend the kaya butter toast, nasi lemak, and kopi coffees. Everything is fairly affordable and tasty. My only dislike was the gelatinous substance in the oyster omelette. If not for that, I would have enjoyed it more. In short, I do recommend this and will be returning.
Little Malaysian counter-serve place with seating. Fast, decently priced, and delicious. Great for breakfast (available all day!), snack, dessert, or meal (basically all-purpose).I had the pan mee, this very savory noodle soup with tons of fried anchovy and wood ear mushroom, and pandan chicken. Favorite part of the meal is the iced Milo, which took me back to my childhood.
Great staple for Malaysian food in NYC. Came here in Fall 2019 and again in Sept 2021. Unfortunately the nasi lemak fell a bit short - the anchovies had a bit of an over-fried, old oil taste that I dont remember from my Fall 2019 visit. I also prefer my sambal to have that reddish-brown lumpy thick look but I guess the recipe is a bit different here so if thats what you prefer be aware. Otak otak was nice and hot and fluffy and our curry puffs were also hot and flavorful. Hoping to re-visit soon and try the same items again! Its great to have Malaysian food at a great price with a nice atmosphere.
Quaint Malaysian cafe that has a warm and friendly vibe. I went by myself and I would not recommend it only because I wanted to try the whole menu. Definitely try the house special coffee (they have a light version if you dont want it so strong) -- I got mine iced. The staff is super friendly, so dont hesitate to ask if you have questions!
Some hits and misses here. We tried quite a few things. The stingray and the oyster omelettes are the 2 standouts. Comparable to the Singapore standard! I will even go as far as to say the oyster omelette here is better than most Ive had in Singapore, albeit its a little different since its wetter.Lobak was 3rd best in the things we ordered. Really good, and I think they make this themselves. The nasi lemaks peanuts and ikan belis were legit, but it lacks egg, and fish to really call it a nasi lemak in my books.Pandan chicken was good but a bit hard to share and unwrapAvoid the otah.Ps: Got to bus your own table.
Had to write this down since I feel they could have shown more respect for the most important Malaysian dish Bak Kut Teh. The version here was severely watered down - you barely taste the herbs in it and it’s just lots of soy and salt. The meat was really under stewed and unflavorful. It’s creative to put pork stomach in, but there could be more vege.Overall none of the other dishes stand out either… this meal doesn’t represent Malaysian cuisine for us
Ate my food too fast to take a picture but so delicious! we ordered the nasi lemak, tok tok new and the kuih talam and sago gula melaka for dessert. the kuih talam was so delicious!! great prices, super nice staff, and i really appreciated they checked my vax card. definitely want to return to try more of the main course options.
I definitely expected more given the rave reviews but was utterly disappointed with the nasi lemak - no proper sambal?! You get ikan bilis fried with some sambal giving it a dry gravy feel and we were given a tiny spoonful of “sambal belacan”. Oh Chien and kuih were okay.
No idea how they are in business, no ice on a hot summer afternoon (could have gone to a store and bought ice, instead they just ignore it), no specialty cakes available as advertised on their menu, no noodles etc... The decor & atmosphere doesnt reflect a kopitiam (old school 70s coffee place in Malaysia). Highly over rated reviews of this place!
I was at Kopitiam with my husband & daughter today- Wednesday Aug 11th 2021. I order Hainanese chicken rice & my daughter ordered the cold sesame noodles. The cold sesame noodles came with the cucumbers looking wrinkled & yellowish, it looks like the cucumber has been a week old. The Hainanese chicken looked old not fresh & had been sitting around for a while, the rice was hard & it wasn’t authentic! Since you have to clear the table after your meal, no one knew I threw the whole dish away! No one came to ask whether everything was okay. Kopitiam used to be a great cafe when I was there a year ago. The food has gone down hill & I will never go back again. The other thing is, I tried to order 4 other dishes & they were out including ice tea!!!!
Yummy!! Had the nasi lemak, which had less paste than Im used to... But the pan mee (dry) was sooo good. Its hand pulled and so tender & flavorful. Would go back again just for that!Kaya toast for sure is good, but wish it came already as a combo set with the eggs, just as they do in Singapore. The kopi tarik was good but Id recommend the hot coffee version with just condensed milk.I will be back!!
Came here with my girlfriend at around 11 on a Sunday for a late breakfast. We were a little groggy from the night before having been woken up at 2 a.m. by our party boy neighbor and his party pals but the wonderful flavors and caffeine concoctions woke me right up. We both had cham, a coffee/tea/condensed milk combo. A little more bitter than youd think, as the tannins in the tea really come through in a big way but still quite good. I started with a curry puff to whet the appetite. The gf said it could do with more salt but I thought it was good as is. We then shared the peanut sugar french toast and the fish ball soup, both of which absolutely slapped. The french toast had that floofy fluff I crave and all of it was covered in the peanut-y goodness. Really good. Not as sweet as I was expecting but I mean that in a good way. Soup was excellent, with the peppery hot broth served boiling hot. Absolutely loved this meal. Will definitely be coming back to try everything else.
If youre looking for real Malaysian street fare, their Nasi Lemak and Teh Tarik wont disappoint. Its a hole in the wall filled with many treasures. A pescatarian friendly spot with weekend specials that I have yet to discover. I love their cup design. Certified awesome :D
We greatly missed Singapore and wanted a tasted of South East Asia. I recommend the Kaya Butter Toast and Milo French toast (it’s a little savoury as well as sweet so that’s a ton of fun)! The foods here make for a great afternoon tea or just have a meal if that’s what you’re looking for! The Lobak was great but the Nasi Lemak was nothing too special, go for the smaller items instead.
The food was very affordable and delicious! I will say that the foods we had were very salty and a bit oily; particularly the duck tongue meal and the oh chien (oyster omelette). I really enjoy the format of not having a designated waiter/waitress and ordering and paying like when youre at a regular takeout place. Its a casual place and a bit cramped but nothing out of the ordinary for a small restaurant in the area. All-in-all, a great experience with Malaysian food!
This place is so delicious and so cute! The front door has an old pink rotary phone next to it. Once youre inside, its a small, cozy environment. You order at the front whatever you want, then pay, and then you sit down and wait for the food to come out. The food was amazing. The chicken is absolutely great and the desserts are to die for. I really love Malaysian food and this place did not disappoint.
Food is not good at all. I have giving 2 stars but I gave it 3 due to the cleanliness inside the store. Major issue was it took really long for my haiianese chicken to be made. Upon taking it home and I dont live far, the chicken was extremely tough and was to the point inedible. If I were to return I would def get something else and give it a fairer score. But as of right now it is a hard dissapointment for my first visit.
First time trying Malaysian food, and Kopitiam made it a great experience! You must try the Kopi Tarik ( strong iced coffee), Lobak (fried pork roll), and Pandan Chicken (chicken wrapped in banana leaf). Absolutely recommend and would come back to try more on the menu.
This place was quite good. Was right in line with what I was looking for to fill my belly after a long day of work. Good portions, home cooking, and good prices. Loved the noodle soup, and the chicken wrapped in banana leaves, and had a nice surprise with a new coffee drink that I’ve never had before, Malaysian White coffee with butter. It was more of a desert for me, since I don’t usually do sugar in my coffee, but a desert I would choose any day.
As kind as I would like to be, its disappointing to have all three menu items I ordered to be a total white-washed version and not representative of the actual flavors at all.Lychee Bandung became Rose Lychee for some reason? Dont call it bandung then.Nasi Lemak is very underwhelming. You got the two most basic items on the Nasi Lemak wrong: the Coconut Rice and the Sambal. You should be ashamed for such a false representation of Malaysia.Update: Response by owner should be a dead giveaway.BETTER ALTERNATIVES include Rasa near Washington Square or Kuih Cafe just nearby. Go for the latter for more reasonable prices and an actual decent Nasi Lemak: rice that actually has coconut flavors and a side of sambal with the right Nyonya flavors. #notsponsored
Had the pan mee and lor bak. The pan mee (which I thought is 板面) is actually mee hoon kueh, which was not what I expected but is fine - the broth was good. Lor bak (ngoh hiang) was good ratio between filling and skin, I am used to having it with a dark sauce, the sweet sauce was nice accompaniment though.
A cute, cozy, versatile concept tied to unique flavors/textures on a great location for a cheap price. No complaints here. You take a number and find a seat. Lots of natural light coming into the space makes this a great place to study. Cute and folksy pastel colored furnishings and exposed brick walls. The food offerings here really are special and I am real eager to try more of them.I do wish that the menu could be better organized. As someone unaccustomed to Malaysian cuisine, it was challenging to identify flavor profiles among the many items and their portion sizes just by the prices. Will definitely return.
Will be ordering from here again soon! We got the Nasi lemak, Kaya toast, Pandan chicken andChilled spicy sesame noodles. Everything was good! The noodles were our favorite. The consistency was perfect. Tried the Bek kopi and it tastes like burnt marshmallows (in a good way) hahahaha wasn’t expecting that favor but i instantly liked it.
Hainan chicken and rice is so terrible, chicken is too big and not tender. Over price $13.50 with tax 1.20 total of 14.70 too pricey. Other Malayisa restaurants Hainan chicken and rice is average price is 9.50 with tax and most Resturant use smaller chicken which is very tender and fresh. This restaurant price is way overpriced.
Neat little eatery with some uncommon menu items. Food here is tasty but generally not stellar. The lobak (tofu skin wrapped pork) was delicious, though the salted egg chicken wings felt severely lacking in actual salted egg. White coffee is worth trying here if you havent had it before. Food was somewhat pricey for the portions provided, and theres usually a wait.
This is a go to for me if I ever want Malaysian food! Though I don’t drink coffee, the white coffee seems to be a hit with all my friends. Obviously sweet but it’s made with condense milk powder which is pretty unique! To hit the spot, get the classic Kaya Toast. My persona love was the Milo French Toast! It was a taste of childhood flavors! So good!Things can get pricey since it’s not Asia, but there is value in uniqueness. I usually eat at the restaurant and then take away snacks that they have which rotates a lot!
I picked up a take out order consisting of muah chee (with peanuts) and hainanese chicken rice. The muah chee tasted surreal and just like mochi! It was freshly made, warm and chewy. I was a little disappointed by the hainanese chicken, since I had tasted this dish pre-COVID. At the time, the chicken tasted soft and tender. This time, post-COVID, the chicken meat did not easily come off the bones, instead it was chewy. But, I guess it may come down to personal preference.

2022-05-28The Nasi Lemak and the pineapple bun with chicken jerky were divine. Fried squid and stinky bean were delicious. Drinks come in special plastic bags which is cool. Love that they have many menu items to choose from. Desserts were good too.

2022-01-03This place is popular and for good reason. A true Malaysian small plates eatery that perfectly satisfies. The coffee is excellent and so is the food and the little colored desserts. One of the coolest things about living in New York City is you can get authentic international cuisine a subway away. One of my favorites.

2022-02-17Pretty good homemade tasting Malaysian food in the Chinatown/Lower East Side neighborhood on East Broadway ( theres a Citibike rack across the street next to Seward Park .) We got the Sotong Goreng appetizer which is Calamari but its a lot of little tiny squids with dipping sauces. Also the Pulut Panggang which is sticky rice with shrimp paste. Id say the squid was better (and Id get potato curry puff if they had it that day but they didnt.) I had the Nasi Lemak which is a dry anchovies and peanut over rice and is the national dish of Malaysia. Definitely mix the sambal on the rice ! My friend got Tok Tok Mee which is chewy noodles with shrimp and pork and he liked that. I also had Calamansi ade which taste like lemonade. Best thing though is the Pulut Tai Tai which is a not too sweet dessert of blue sticky rice with Kaya jam made from coconut! Delicious. I wish I had got more than one. That was $3.75 and wrap in banana leaf. The peanut mochi is warm and good on a cold day but its enough for 3 or 4 people to share because its so rich so be aware! Id recommend this place. Tasty food and good prices. No alcohol though.

2021-09-13Kopitiam has been on my bucket list for a while and finally got a chance to try it. It’s super popular and there is always a line but the wait isn’t too bad. The decor is adorable and authentic with vintage-like furnitures. The options weren’t various but everything was really appealing. We had Belacan Wings, Oyster Omelette and Weekend Special Curry Mee to share with a group of two. The food was amazingly delicious and appetizing, especially the Curry Mee, which has a super creamy & flavorful broth. The price is also reasonable with proper portion. We definitely will plan to visit again for its signature breakfast toast and Nasi Lemak in the near future.

2022-05-24This place seems to be quite popular with young wealthier young adults. Well presented meals. I cant say the teh tarik was worth getting, never tasted anything like it Penang or KL before. Assam Laksa was very americanised, not fishy or salty, so not authentic but tasty enough. Curry puff was ok, its small. The nasi lemak was tasty but their sambal is on the less chilli side. All in all, liked it. Will come again for their hainan chicken and pan mee noodles.

2022-02-01The place is just off the main area of the Chinatown in Manhattan, sitting at a less busy street. I have ordered Sotong Goreng, Malaysian style fried squid, Pandan Chicken and Nyonya Bak Zhang, which is white rice dumpling. They all super tasty and delicious. I also tried Pulut Inti, which is one of my favorite dishes here, it is purple sticky rice with coconut sugar on top. A Kuih Talam and Kuih Lapis, both are typical Malaysian sweets, you can not miss it!

2022-06-16Went to Kopitiam on a wet morning for brunch, and ordered quite a spread of delicacy! Overall quality of the food was great and true to its roots, and the flavor is close to what you get in Malaysia.Had the Kaya Toast that used the kaya that was made in-house. Quite a difficult condiment to execute, but they have done a very good version of it. The pan mee was made using handmade noodles, with a sizeable portion and good flavor! Also tried other dishes such as the nasi lemak and I recommend them too.Really enjoyed the dishes served up at Kopitiam, and definitely worth a visit if you’re craving for food from home, or just want to try Malaysian cuisine without flying halfway around the world for it.

2022-07-07Unassuming Malaysian eatery with delicious food. Some time-consuming dishes came out much faster than what was indicated on the menu. Hainanese Chicken Rice came with 3 rice balls. The chicken fat made the rice and the soy sauce very flavorful. I also like Belancha Chicken Wings, sweet, salty and spicy. Char Kway Teow is a must have if you are lucky to see it come up to the menu;)

2022-06-07I am just giving review for Nasi Lemak, lychee and onde onde. Firstly, the place is unique and I like it but does not looks like kopi tiam back in Singapore / Malaysia. The Nasi Lemak rice does not have enough coconuts flavoring but ikan bilis is generous and very good (5/5). For $8.50, I was hoping the size are bigger or more ingredients like fried chicken or fish. The lychee was also expensive but I love the packaging and ondeh ondeh size is generous and 5 stars.

2021-12-29Amazing Malaysian food and home to one of NYTs top 25 dishes in NYC, the kaya butter toast (heavenly pandan leaf and coconut based jam between two amazing pieces of bread) which sells for $6 (available at all times). The prices are very good and they also have a good number of outdoor seating. They also do not solicit tips.Definitely recommend.Lots of amazing desserts as well and Malaysian main course items.
