Kumo Sushi in other cities:
This is one of the good all you can eat sushi places and if I lived here I would definitely come back. There are 2 kinds of all you can eat sushi places: buffet, and made-to-order. Beware any buffet all you can eat, these places are usually terrible. Made-to-order usually comes higher quality and is usually a safe bet, and here the sushi is made to order and pretty good quality. The photo is of the sushi I ordered from the all you can eat menu, as you can see the sushi looks good and they even include some of special rolls for all you can eat :) It also tastes good for all you can eat.
The sushi lunch special is fantastic for the price! The fish is fresh, firm, flavorful. Pleasant, safe environment and good, attentive but unobtrusive, service. Only four stars just because of the cliche salad and shrimp, which maybe you like, so... Definitely now a go to place when in the neighborhood for me.
This is a review for the AYCE option. Beware: includes glass shards in miso soup.Menu items -- 2/5 very restricted. Includes about half all special rolls and some hand rolls. Not much variety. Only one miso soup or salad per person. No sashimi.Rolls-- 1/5. These rolls are mostly rice. See pics. Some rolls are worse than others. The worst part? Their sushi rice isnt even all that great. Fish was okay. Not particularly fresh or good.Miso soup-- 0/5. I was drinking up the last of my soup when I felt a sharp pain followed by a crunch. I dont think soups are supposed to have a crunch to them.. right? I sift my tongue slowly through my mouth and find 2 pieces of glass. Small, but definitely glass. Looks like a piece of chipped glass, where one edge was really thin, and thats where I chomped it in half.Scared the $#@& out of me. Im so thankful that I didnt just swallow the entire soup on this particular day.But heres the interesting part: the manager comped only my meal. We were charged my spouses meal since his didnt have a glass shards in it. Im not griping about the $30, really. But I cant help but wonder how they still worry about breaking even when I could have just choked on a piece of glass. Fam, is that really how you see this situation?Needless to say, we didnt want the rest of our meal, and left immediately.
Opens at 11:30 am. Placed order for noon pickup. Went to pick up and they weren’t open. A manager opened up, I asked when to come back. They said 15-20 minutes. I came back at 12:30 to give extra time. Food wasn’t ready. He wanted me to sign verifying that I picked up my order when the order wasn’t ready yet. If they had offered a half hearted “sorry” I probably wouldn’t have cared but instead he literally ignored me asking when the food would be ready. I see that newly seated customers are already served , so they deprioritized my already late order. So don’t use this place during a work lunch break unless you want to lose your entire break waiting for food.Too bad because the food is generally tasty. But between work and a newborn at home it is pretty frustrating to lose time like this.
My husband and I entered to get some ice cream. We were greeted with a you dont want to go to Hageen Dazs?. Obviously they didnt want us there from the start. Note that the restaurant was fully empty when we were there. We sat down and after yelling something to her coworker in a foreign language came to tell us they didnt have ice cream when we havent even ordered anything, which was obviously a lie. We went away. Will never come back. No sense of customer service whatsoever.
The sushi here was good but it wasn’t anything special. The restaurant has a clean and nice environment and the staff were friendly and kind. I don’t think their food lives up to the cost but it was a quiet and nice place to go to with a friend. I would recommend if your looking for a sushi place to go to for early dinner or late lunch.
The food is average, you can find better Sushi in another places. I was with my girlfriend almost one month ago, and the service of the waitress was very impolite. She wasn´t a kindly person, therefore I decided not to give tips. I believe that is very important, not only a tasty food, but also the service must be kindly.I can´t recommend this place.
Too much rice on their rolls, especially if you are getting the All-You-Can-Eat option. They also have notices on their AYCE menu that you will be charged for extra rice, so youre forced to eat the rice either separately or with the sushi so that it masks the flavor of the fish. The service was pretty standard for an AYCE sushi restaurant, with the exception of the happier attitude of our waitress.
Horrible. This place used to be called Kinoko and was owned by wonderful Japanese people. The sushi, all you can eat, was always wonderful. Thick, fresh slices of so many kinds of fish were available and served traditionally on a small rice ball that was perfectly seasoned. The chefs were all Japanese. Now its Kumo. We went back on our anniversary after many years to try it now. Sushi was not fresh, so thin it was see through and served on a huge ball of barely cooked rice. For this we paid over $70 for 2 people and were forced to pay a $10 tip as they tag it on. We could hardly eat one plate of this crappy sushi. Total rip off! AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE unless you like to be ripped off!
Not worth it at all! All you can eat is $28 plus automatic 18% gratuity for just sushi pieces or rolls (no sashimi - mainly fillers). Plus there is a fee if you leave ANY rice on the plate. Compared to other all-you-can-eat places with the same price, this place has no options and is super expensive.
Stoped by randomly. I loved their rolls every bite of the way! Definitely coming back! Their prices are the best in the area too!Update:Had to drop some stars as they don’t seem to be punctual nor consistently nor take phone orders correctly. And then they lie about time so you can complete order. Not nice to have a customer wait extra half hour just because you want money
So I went on a saturday night at 9PM and it was empty. I tried to figure out what was wrong and I soon found out. Here are some honest ways for this joint to improve, or this place is probably going under within the next year.Pros:1. Unlimited sushi for $27.99. Fish was actually good.2. Sushi tasted ok. Not as good as Kikoo sushi or Sushi para 88.3. This is the only sushi buffet in the upper west side. It is part of a chain, but this 72nd street one has prime location.4. Listed later closing time than many other joints.Cons: basically they try too much to save costs and deliver a sub par sushi experience. I felt like they were trying to cut corners wherever they can for a few more bucks.1. TOO MUCH RICE!!! They try to cut cost buy making massive sushi rolls with lots of rice. When we asked them to put less rice in, they were not willing to do that and say that thats only for made to order sushi. So theyre basically saying they are capable of making good sushi but is not willing to if you go to the unlimited. You are basically charging the same as all the other sushi buffet restaurants, and the sushi is only half as good mainly because theres too much rice. You advertise a sushi buffet, not a rice ball buffet. If I wanted to eat rice Id go to my mamas house not here!2. STINGY left over policy. You can have 2 pieces of sushi and no rice left over otherwise they charge 1/2 price for every sushi pieces left over. Ive eaten at so many buffets and never have I been so afraid to try stuff because Id get charged. Its like having dinner in a communist sushi joint where every grain has to be saved. Get rid of that policy. Most people are reasonable and wont order a crazy amount and end up not eating it.3. Charges for literally everything not on the fixed sushi menu. For ice cream, appetizers, etc. you need to pay for each order. Every other sushi buffet in the city throws in appetizers and desserts to their line up for the same price. Another cost-cutting measure that cuts into the dining experience. Buffets are experiences where you treat and stuff yourself. I left not wanting to do that because there was not enough variety of appetizers and desserts. Oh and no unlimited sake bombs of course. And its $2 for breathing the air inside the restaurant and $1 to sit down.4. Fixed 18% tip to your bill, for a party of 2! Another sneaky business practice to get a few more bucks. If the service is good (which its not really), Customers will tip accordingly. Its just so they can list a lower price and then up charge on the tip.5. Kitchen closes at 10:30, AN HOUR before their actual listed closing time. Not coming back until these things are fixed. Its no wonder this place is empty on a Saturday night. The only people eating there were the employees. They played themselves. Trying to cut costs at every corner leading to nobody wanting to come.
Kumo has decent sushi and decent cuts of it for the price it charges. The service has declined significantly since the prior sushi restaurant in its place, Kinoko. The staff can be inattentive and the staff and management are somewhat lacking in common sense when it comes to the policies for its all you can eat special (suffice to say they are one lawsuit for food poisoning/hepatitis away from no longer becoming viable as business). There is definitely a lack of professionalism and polish with the staff and the kitchen will sometimes close as much as 45 minutes earlier than the advertised hours of the place. As a result I rarely eat in there and generally only order pickup. Its fine for that.
My love and I went last night. The SuChief was amazing but as we sat there eating, my stomach started getting more and more upset. Headache, and a shooting pain in my stomach. I dont know what in the world attributed to that but I felt like I had food poison. My love was 100% great. I was dying in the bathroom. I give 4 stars because believe me or not the service was dope the food good but I ended up in their bathroom twice!
If you are particular about your sushi, dont bother with this place. Fish is not the best grade. And with the All you can Eat menu, they put WAY too much rice under the fish on purpose to fill you up quickly. The large amount of rice does not balance well with the smaller cut of fish. And they will charge if you dont eat the mountains of rice.$27.95 for all you can eat is really not a good deal when you consider that.Do yourself a favor and go to Sushi Yasaka up the block on 72nd...one of the best sushi restaurants in NY, and still reasonably priced.
Horrible place you won’t have anything but rice, is ridiculous the quantity of rice in the rolls and hand rolls, in addition of that they want to charge you one dollar for each souse when is usually free. And force you to leave 18% when the service is just awful. DO NOT COME TO THIS PLACE. They also have in the menu that you will be charge for leftover rice just looking the way to take your money.
This is not a culinary experience for all the senses. Rather, it’s a reliable place to have a down and dirty Japanese dinner when you’re hungry and in the neighborhood. I hadn’t eaten all day and I was starved. I came in and ordered Hamachi kama( yellowtail collar, the neck of the fish), and I encourage you to try it. It’s simply grilled, full of juicy and delicious yellowtail meat with a large center section easy to attack and other areas you need to reach in with your chopsticks for. It’s worth the effort. I also had naruto, which is raw fish of your choice artistically rolled within long, thin strips of peeled cucumber. Dipped in a subtle mix of wasabi and soy sauce, it’s a perfect meal for a humid summer night.
What terrible service. They had no WiFi, I ordered the all-you-can eat ($29) and a beer, the food came in and it was barely decent. A friend of mine walks in, he already had dinner, I had him taste ONE PIECE of my sushi, the manager came to me to complain that hed have to pay for that. After my initial shock and bewilderment, I wanted to get out of there asked for the bill. They charged me 20% more because of that with a compulsory tip, and I ended up paying close to $50 for a meal. You bloody idiots, you just lost a customer for life.
We suggest you have mustard available for request when serving tonkatsu. Also a tonkatsu dish almost always comes with shredded cabbage. But here it’s just flat deep fried pork with no greens. We have come here so many times as our way of supporting local & independent businesses in our neighborhood. But no one in this restaurant ever smiles. Every time we come it’s always the same sloppy reception. Oh, well ...
DO NOT COME HERE. The fish is not fresh and tastes watery and fishy. Worst of all they put so much rice on everything that you cannot taste anything but rice. Service is bad and they charge you for the tip automatically. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE IT IS NOT WORTH IT
I loved this place when it was Kinoko, and still love it. Its all-you-can-eat, including a great variety of hand rolls. Though I would normally expect AYCE sushi to be cheap and mediocre, this is *very good* sushi, and the AYCE feels like a huge bonus! It wont compare to places like Matsuhisa or Koi, but those are $$$$. This is some of the best neighborhood sushi to be had, and I always make a point of going there when Im in NYC.
Food is tasteless , drinks are cheaply made , I get it a drink for $7 you can ask only for so much but shot of vodka and a little liquor and some pom juice how much can you save for a small glass . Lol I cant 😂... , people work hard for their funds so when I go out to eat I want a little bit of experience at least . Thanks
I did not go into Komo for many years because it didn’t look appealing from the outside, and the inside appeared small and dingy. Well, never judge a book by its cover. The sushi happens to be good here! It’s not great, mind you. You will not say “Wow, that’s the best, freshest, melt-in-your-mouth sushi I’ve ever had,” but you will be satisfied and consider your money well spent.Prices are reasonable and the menu selection is excellent. They even have good drinks. For dessert, the tempura green tea ice cream is awesome! In particular, I’m really impressed with the service. Five stars on that. We always have the same woman, who is extremely courteous, conscientious, and gets our order right every time. She is often the only server there, and manages to keep her cool even when super busy.

2022-03-23This is one of our neighborhood little Japanese restaurants. It might not be the best in the city, but the staff is friendly, the fish is fresh and I like to support them. They deliver during the entire pandemic.

2022-04-17ALL THE REVIEWS STATING THIS PLACE HAS GOOD SUSHI IS LYING TO YOU. This place deserves ZERO stars! They add double the amount rice in all you can eat sushi, charge you extra for leftover rice and sushi. And they don’t even tell you about it before hand. They want to just use you as a cash grab. They don’t care about their customer service or their food quality. This place brings shame to the art of sushi and the culture of sushi.

2021-03-06It’s during the pandemic and we wanted Japanese, so we ordered four bento boxes. I’d meant to take pix of everything, but it came and it was all so delicious that we’d finished it all by the time I remembered! Here’s a photo of some of the shrimp tempura. Generous portions, with fresh ingredients and it arrived ahead of schedule. A great experience.***UPDATE*** Two weeks later, we all agreed we should order again from Kumo. But this time, we took pictures! And, yes, the food was still wonderful.

2022-06-25This place has gone downhill since it changed owners from the original Japanese one. The fish is not fresh and the sushi chefs are not professional. No self-respecting sushi chef would ever serve such obviously spoiled sushi (e.g. brown grey spots on tuna) like theyve done multiple times and management refuses to acknowledge that the fish is bad so I gave up even trying with this place after the third time.

2022-04-19The sushi is actually very good. The all you can eat is not a good deal. The amount of rice is absolutely obscene. When questioned about this they fully admitted that they add all that rice.Come for the other menu but not the all you can eat

2022-05-29Fish is very fresh, and staff is friendly. All you can eat is good price for if you can eat lots of sushi. Recommend for those in the area

2022-03-19Never order from the “all you can eat” menu. Each roll has at least a pound of rice on it and hardly any fish, the fish for that matter is less than worthy to be called a sushi place. They are very deceiving owners. Stay away!

2022-06-08Absolute worst asian food I have ever had, save your money and go to Tacobell next door. Ordered chicken teriyaki and my mom salmon teriyaki and was dry and distasteful. I just hope I dont get food poisoning 😩

2022-02-02This place advertised $30 all you can eat sushi so I decided to try them out. The restaurant had a funky smell when I walked in and the fish did not seem fresh. They also gave a ratio of 75/25 rice. I honestly couldn’t believe how much rice they used for their rolls, it was like eating just rice I didn’t even taste the fish over the overpowering taste of rice. When I asked them to lay off on the rice they told me “ you get extra rice when you order the all you can eat” after I was finished I asked for the bill and it came out to $43. I asked them how could this be if you said it was $30 and they told me they include tip plus tax, which they never told me about beforehand. For that price I could have gone elsewhere and had a much better experience. Stay far away from these crooks. Very disappointed and angry!
