UPDATE: my favorite wine bar in the city. Casual, authentic, quintessential French- that’s how it should be. Look, there’s a simple formula - a great wine selection, good food pairings, the right setting, and a passionate and friendly staff, and this place hits the mark. It recreates the Parisian experience, whether that was their intention or not!
Ordered several dishes to try and we liked all of them except the spaghetti squash carbonara (i don’t get it and it was super salty and liquidy). favorite was the duck prosciutto and steak tartare. this place is more of a wine bar/restaurant for wine lovers. dark ambience and very noisy but that’s the atmosphere.
Disappointed in my visit overall. I guess I had high expectations. Wine portions could be a tad bit more generous. A bug fell into my glass as well as my friends glass. Not sure where they came from but this happened at the front table. I think this should be looked into because that was a turn off. Positive: Truffle grilled cheese was delicious. Place is cozy.
Delicious wine menu, good food, and a nice location. The wine is the obvious highlight while the service is below par. The waiter shared no information with us about the wine, didn’t know information when asked questions, and we often waited for our water to be filled. He missed out on a couple more rounds of wine. Might go back, but just for the wine.. and hoping that the service is better.
With an extensive wine menu and curated food menu, this place is clearly all about the wine. My table was recommended an incredibly smooth and dry Malbec that we thoroughly enjoyed. We had this with a burrata, some spaghetti squash, and the short rib crepe. Delicious! Each dish was simple, but clearly done with great ingredients and finesse. Certainly worth the splurge!
Recommendation by Veronica of Despana wine store.Glad I found Despana and glad she recommended this place.Between my colleague and I we had 5 wine glasses. Catherine took us almost round the world. Australia, France and Bulgaria (well almost round the world). For food I had the sunchokes - which were delicious enough for me to order seconds. My colleague had pork sliders and he lived it too.For dessert ww had the mango dessert.Only one gripe: for vegetarians not much on the menu. There was the burrata, the sunchokes and one more dish. A little more would help.Would I go back again: of course. Will also recommend it all friends in Dubai.A special shout out to Catherine. Very polite with excellent knowledge of the wines she served.
If youre looking for a world wide selection of great wines you have to check this place out. Its a no frills wine experience perfect for real cellar rats. They have a nice selection of library wines at very good prices, and the wine staff knows their stuff. The food is very good, smaller plates, perfect for sharing with a group. The service is a little flakey. We ordered the octopus, which we never got and they brought us a pasta we never ordered. They took it off the bill, but we would have really liked to have had the octopus dish. All in all a very enjoyable experience, just make sure you check your bill.
Pleasure to flight with them . From aircraft to service - everything is on a positive site . Flew with them already 3 times and was fully satisfied. Their affiliation with low cost European airline EasyJet is very questionable! La compagnie is one of the top service airline, and the EasyJet is a company 200% to avoid !? Does not go together .
Excellent wine bar where the service knows the wines very well -- the service is always super friendly and knowledgeable. I love the mystery wine concept (guess the wine and win the bottle). I think the happy hour is the best time to go as it can generally be on the more expensive side for a night out.
Dimly lit and comfortable atmosphere with a wine selection large enough to fill up a lifetime. If you go there for charcuterie, you may be disappointed with the selection of cheeses and meats(believe there are only 5 respectively). Ordering a main dish was fine with decent timing;however, the squash dish left much to be desired in terms of flavor. Im taking a star for the seasoning and a star of the service which felt like I needed to chase for ordering.
Pretty cool spot. Great location. Huge wine list. Amazing selection but not cheap. Interesting snack options but not a place Id do for dinner. They seem to have no natural wine by the glass which threw me since its billed as a natural wine bar. That said I was very happy with all the wine I got so Id go again.
I just simply love this place. It is one of a kind, here in NYC. The atmosphere is the best to stop by after work, or have a special evening with your date, or catch up with your friend over a bottle of wine. The selection is carefully curated, so you cant go wrong with your choice, especially if you ask a wine-specialist for an advice.
I feel like I’m being generous by giving 3 stars but as a fellow restaurant in New York I can’t rate another place lower because every place has ups and downs and off-nights. We went last month, and were pretty disappointed after it came highly recommended by many friends in the industry. First off, everything is very expensive for extremely small portions. We spent a lot of money and left starving after a few courses. The bottle list is very good but the wines on the glass list weren’t all that delicious. Seating is very uncomfortable and awkward. Service was nothing special - we waited quite a while to get someone’s attention to order more wine. Overall I’m not planning to go back - for natural wine experiences I’d much rather keep on going to Ten Bells and Ruffian.
La Compagnie des Vins S. has an excellent and extensive wine list with a combination of marquee brands as well as niche brands with a particular attention to grower champagnes and Burgundies. The space is wonderfully conducive to a pleasant few hours of enjoying several glasses of somm-worthy wine, some delightful food and cozy or romantic conversation. The food is also particular well executed and reasonably sized. Unfortunately, the benefits and positives of the wine list, space and food are overwhelmed by a lack of attention to service. For the precise attention paid to the wine list, it is surprising that there is a correspondent lack of attention to delivering service that is commensurate with the prices and quality of the wines and the food. As someone who ordered two bottles (one bottle of Alexandre Filaine and one bottle of Vire Vlesse Thevenet) among 3 people along with several appetisers (6 appetisers: 4 cauliflower, 1 burrata, 1 sun chokes), for a per customer price of over USD 100 for three customers, it is disappointing the level of sevice. As a comparison, it would be a better customer experience to go to Racines or the bar at Restaurant Daniel than La Compagnie. I hope the owners pay attention to delivering a better customer experience with excellent service than is now currently available.
I notice you have a huge, wide selection of wine. I also noticed some of it was from Northern California. I grew up in the east bay near Oakland, California and have been to Napa and Sonoma which have very beautiful vineyards along all the roads. I dont know if youve ever had wine from Pleasanton - Livermore, California but I used to live there; it is in the east bay near Oakland but over the hill in its own upper-desert valley. I thought maybe you would like their wine, too. I use to drive through Ruby Hills all the time. The vineyards are very pretty. You have a very nice restaurant, maybe someday Ill make it there, best of luck to you ;)
An instant classic ever since it opened over ten years ago. Some of the dishes have only gotten better while others have become destinations onto themselvesThe bar staff is always professional and the wine list is down, with offerings to please every type of wine drinker.
A stunning wine bar in Soho. The sommelier was a very charming French gentleman with a great beard helped my wife and I choose delicious wine pairings to our charcuterie (which was fantastic. I loved the bread that they chose) and the seared octopus was delicious. The wine selection was very impressive. I wish we had a place like this close to me.
I went to the Science of Pairings event here last night, and it was wonderful! Very small group of people interested in learning about wine and food, and the sommelier gave us a wonderful introduction to the art of pairing food and wine. He was incredibly knowledgeable but approachable as well! If you are there, be sure to ask for him (Vitaliy) to recommend a pairing. After the event, my friend and I shared the most delectable cassoulet Ive ever laid eyes upon. All of the dishes I tried, including the small bites we had during our wine tasting, were excellent, with complex flavor profiles that stimulate your taste buds in unexpected ways. I highly recommend the popcorn... Dont ask, just try it :) Youll be glad you did!
Hip wine bar with biodynamic options. I struggled with giving this more stars. It would hands down receive 5 stars for the wine, but the combination of food and service downgraded it. This is a outstanding place to go if you are shopping in SoHo and need a glass of wine (or a bathroom break with a glass of wine) between 5 and 7 pm. The wine and snacks are interesting and extremely affordable during happy hour - $5 for each snack with an asterisk or $20 for all 5 of them and $5 off any glass of wine (except the mystery glass). We thoroughly enjoyed a glass of Spanish orange wine, a Rhone white blend, and a Chablis, along with fennel-spiced olives, salt & vinegar pistachios, and asparagus with wood ear mushrooms and sabayon. The pecorino and black pepper popcorn (a bit chewy) and the meat and cheese were perfectly fine. The Calendar Island mussels were too large in size (huge!) and only so-so in flavor. We actually left half of them. The service was slow, traffic from the Holland Tunnel entrance was loud, and the quiet seat in the window loses its privacy when someone is seated outside inches from you (with a window separating). We will definitely go back at some point but will only order wine and snacks.
Great wine bar with a friendly and competent sommelier. We visited two times during our NYC stay. I had tuna tartare and beef tartare, both were delicious. The beardy french sommelier matched great, not over pricesed, wines both times. Remember though, it is a wine bar, the portions are not very large.
WOW. never been treated so poorly at a restaurant in NYC. We made a reservation for a friends birthday, when we arrived, we were told they were waiting for the table to open up, but were asked if we wouldnt mind sitting at the communal table to have a drink while we waited for our reserved table. We agreed as we were in no rush, after 2 bottles of wine and an hour wait, we went back to check in on our told, and were rudely confronted with the comment, Well youre sitting arent you?The manager was no more help and after another 45 mins of waiting we chose to just pay for the wine a go eat somewhere else. Will not be returning here ever again.
You guys would do just as well with taller furniture. Not bigger, wider furniture, I get the space game and packing people in and everything, but its weird to drink a (nice) bottle of wine sitting on the ground. And I saw you asking some restaurant consultants that night how to get some more consistent traffic outside of happy hours. You dont need them and their marketing bs and branding and all that ish. Taller, high top tables, stools (or not? I enjoy standing, too), maybe some smaller candles and European (complimentary) tapas service with every purchase of a bottle of wine. Yall can have that for free.
Took my friend here for his birthday. IT was a really pleasant experience.I forgot her name already, and I apologize for that, but I remember her face and I gave her the nick name jolie as in pretty in french because she was very likable and her personality was just phenomenal.La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels
Galette aux fruits is my idea of a perfect dessert. The bottom layer is a thick cinnamon wafer with a thin spread of chantilly cream. Layered on top of that are fresh and plump blueberries and strawberries with a generous dusting of powdered sugar. The sweetness of the fresh berries + the airy cream + the slightly spicy cinnamon wafer make a heavenly combination that is perfect for a summer afternoon!Tip: You can only take-out if not everyone in your party is having a dessert. But the staff wraps up your order with such flair that its not too bad of an idea to enjoy and share your dessert under the summer sun!

2022-02-21Came at peak time and it was really busy, but felt like service was lacking. Very nice mood environment I just found the chair/couch situation not that comfortable. Cheese display pretty unimpressive. Expansive wine by the bottle menu and nice list by the glass. Mystery glass is cool concept. Personally I prefer other wine bars I’ve been to in nyc, would maybe return for a drink at the bar

2021-11-04Extensive natural wine list. If you happen to like South African biodynamic wine, this place is for you.Beautiful and cozy decorThe staffs are friendly and efficient.Don’t get the tartare. Cacio e pepe popcorn was good, but it’s $9 for a small bowl. Maybe stick to cheese board? They had happy hour from 4-5 on Sunday.

2022-05-03Came here during a weeknight. Was pleasantly surprised as I had no expectations! Vibe was very intimate and laid-back. Service was great and so was the good. The waiter recommended to share the endives, which I wouldve never thought to order, but they were delicious!

2022-01-29Nice place. Good ambiance. Dimmed lights. They do check for vaccinations (thank you!). It gets busy early, reservation probably best if you go on weekends (as we did), wines are nice but small pours unfortunately. A bit loud to have a real conversation with friends but good place for dates.

2021-09-19A cozy place to grab a glass or bottle of some fantastic wine, and you dont have to be a sommelier. The waiters were so helpful, I simply asked for their recommendations and was pleasantly surprised. No condescending attitude at all. The cheese/charcuterie board was incredible as well. Highly recommend.

2022-06-07A very good crispy chicken sandwich. It had a nice kick and a tangy flavor which differentiated from other chicken sandwiches I’ve tried. The wines here are so good and the wait staff knows their stuff. The beef tartare was very good and presented beautifully.
