Ive lived in this neighborhood for over 25 years. This place has steadily going down hill. The quality isnt there. The freshness isnt there. The only thing left worth getting there is the Spumoni in the summer time. But the last time I went in there, it was 30 min until closing and I ordered a large size Spumoni from the woman at the counter. She was pleasant, but I overheard a man in the back say let me go to where you work just before you close and harass you when you just want to go home I turned to the man and said if you dont want my business, then Ill go elsewhere. It was the last time Ive gone in there. Go down the street to the place that actually makes fresh baked goods and wants your business.
Ordered a dinosaur cake for my nephews fourth birthday send pictures of a simple design and they agreed they could do it.When I picked it up and took a quick look I thought to myself this is nothing near what they had agreed upon. I had no other choice to except it in order to have a cake, hoping a four-year-old won’t know the difference. However the worst part was the taste or lack there of... dry and not even sweet! The four-year-old didn’t even want to eat it and that means a lot and let me not get into the price of it..Ended up making a quick cake out of the box so he could at least eat on his birthday..
I ADORE this place. They have the most excellent Italian cookies and pastries. I particularly appreciate their helpfulness in shipping items across the nation. My dad has loved their pistacio guaresmeli (like a biscotti) for many years, but he lives in Illinois. I was able to ship him two pounds of his favorite item without even having to enter the store or go to the post office. Pretty impressive service for a local bakery to ship across the country!
This bakery used to be my go to since my childhood. They USED to be the best bakery hands down. This establishment has gone to the owners head. I had ordered a cake for the holidays, when I presented it to my guests I was highly disappointed and embarrassed. The order was wrong, the chocolate was cracked, the cake was hard like cardboard and tasted even worse. It was not fresh at all. The next day I took the entire cake back to explain to the owner what happened. She was very rude with a terrible attitude and insisted that I was wrong and everything was fine. She lacks respect and customer service ethics. Each time I would try to speak I would get eye rolling, head shaking, speaking under her breath to a worker and was getting spoken to as if I was a child. I was not offered a refund, an apology or anything of that sort. It’s a shame that a bakery that used to be known for their quality pastries is no longer the same. I will never be stepping foot here again!
At one time this was the best bakery anywhere. prices are through the roof. Dont mind paying but the quality does not match up. For a small little Italian ice $4 a cup. Are they kidding me. Remember The days, when in the summer time the kids would line up to get ices. The baked goods fall short. Its worth the 14 block walk to go to Astoria Bakers. Much better only problem no Italian ices
My wife and I have always bought our birthday party and holiday cakes here. Special-ordered cakes have always been very good. They always have a good supply of ready-made cakes of various sizes. Cookies, marzipan, gelato, and more...all good quality. They have a few tables to sit and relax as well, wonderful neighborhood fixture.
This is a classic-style pastry shop that will make your mouth and significant other water with ecstasy. They have an excellent variety of options and aim to please customers with care, kindness and consideration. I would recommend this spot to anyone looking for tasty treats to treat yo self.
Cakes and pastries are delicious but owner is such a difficult person to deal with. Even her employees hate her. Never purchasing again. I cant get a box for one slice because the cake will be a mess but Marthas Country Bakery a few blocks down does it no problem. Ill buy a $6 dollar slice with a box instead of a $4 in a bag. Thank you so much for pushing a loyal customer away :)
My wedding was Saturday night. We ordered cake and other pastries. They neglected to make the cake. The first people to the dessert table loaded up on the other pastries since there was no cake. Half our guests, including my husband and I, had no dessert. They let us down on the most important night of our lives. We will be going there this weekend to see how they respond. Will post an update. UPDATE: We went to the bakery and spoke to the owner, Maria. She admitted the mistake and offered to make us a replacement cake at no charge. Although this will not change the fact that we had no cake at our wedding, we respect her for owning the problem and trying to make it right. Because of this we will use the bakery again in the future, their baked goods are delicious.
Super Happy with the service, pricing, and the variety of items that taste great! I preordered a specialty cake with the baker for my daughters 1st birthday and she was extremely patient and very nice. Oh and did i mention the great prices for amazing specialty cakes and spot on designs they really are setting my sesame street theme with the amazing cakes and cupcakes not to forget the smash cake for my baby girl.I reccomend to try the cannolis! Thanks you ladies at La Guli you all are awesome - Julisa S. See you guys in february or maybe sooner because the pastries are addicting.
Cookie had a weird taste to it, like no other for these type of butter cookies, waxy, burned, bad butter, I could not tell. Whatever it was was stuck on my tongue, I had to wipe it off with a napkin. This bad taste stayed with me all day. Went to let establishment know after work and the boss of the employer never came out from the back. Told her employee to tell me that the only way she would reimburse me (and the only reason why I asked for reimbursement is because as I was telling the employee about the bad taste, she was just looking at me shaking her head, not a care in the world, and I wanted her to do something about the cookies still on the tray) is if I had brought the cookies back to see what the problem was. But the problem wasnt visual, it was a taste issue, so would she have tasted the bad cookie that I had already bit into and my germs are on? Meanwhile there was a whole rack of the same cookies still being sold, why did she not come out and taste one of those? She did not care that I was affected all day by whatever was in it, but also if future customers would buy those same cookies. Who does that? And I had purchased a few other cookies, different ones, from some coworkers and one ate theirs, and it was fine, but I told the other one not to eat it, just in case. But I was worried enough to tell my friends, why would she not be worried about how many other people might be affected? Unless this happens all the time and she knows that she is selling bad products, and stayed hiding in the back. Its unfortunate because I was a customer of this place for many years, and now no more. Disappointed in this place, when I took the time out of my day to go and make sure no one else is exposed to these particular cookies, and the person selling them does not care, not about me, my health, a customer that I have been, or other customers. Shameful. Poor ethics and morals.
Worst experience. I place an order for cupcakes for my wifes baby shower. We had seen some cupcakes and brought in the picture, we asked them if they could make them like that, they said yes and charged me extra for each. Today, I picked them up, cupcakes were not what we asked and paid for. They just stood there and packed them anyway. I had no choice but to take them as I didnt have time to get other ones. 0 stars, last time I buy anything there.
This bakery is an old school local place, exactly the type of place I like to support, but I recently had an experience there that kind of turned me off. I bought $8 worth of rainbow cookies and ordered a small coffee with no sugar. The tab came out to $10.03 and I had a $10 bill. My hands were full of grocery bags and I asked if she could let the $0.03 slide, otherwise Id have to get out my credit card. (After all, I go in there all the time, I usually tip and I even bring people there.)We take credit cards. with a blank look.So now I got to put down my groceries and get out my wallet and credit card, all for the extra $0.03. AND she got my coffee order wrong, it had sugar in it.If they are the type of people to nickel and dime me like that Im going to take my business to Artopolis.
READ THE REVIEWS! I wish I did before going to this place. Highly disgusted by this place!Placed an order and asked if the specific design I wanted could be done. I was assured that it could. When I picked up my order, I was in disbelief that I was charged so much money for something That looked so horrible. I’m not the one to complain- in fact, I never complain, but I was horrified by the lack of professionalism, service, and product done for me. Honestly, I could’ve done a better job. When confronted the ‘manager’ he stated that I didn’t know what I was talking about. He preceded to raise his voice at me when I asked for it to be fixed, I of course yelled back. All of the sudden he came around the counter and proceeded to CHOKE ME!!! I wish I was making this up, because I was in such disbelief.I hope they read this review as they know exactly who he choked. I ended up having to contact the cops.Avoid this place!!!!!!!!! I’ll be posting pictures to showThat this posting to true.
I love Astoria and La Guli which is an institution that has been around since my parents were kids. My parents have stories of getting cannolli cake for every single family birthday party and that tradition continued through out my childhood. I also remember my parents taking my sisters and me for a drive to astoria on really hot summer nights to get their Italian Ices. They recently restored their store front with special Italian craftsmen to its original appearance back in the 1930s when it first opened....I have to bring my father to see if it is as he remembers it as a kid. I know the inside is pretty much the same.. I like that kind of old world feel ... a lot. As my wife says you get a feeling of nostalgia when you walk in and when you get a cake(I recommend cannoli of course) and taste it I literally have flash backs of the many happy times I had eating it as a child...it tastes exactly the same... we have tried other bakeries and no one even comes close... they mostly all cut corners... I know most use fake white rum!!!.... so we take the drive from long island. I heard a rumor they deliver??? They changed ownership (6to7+-?) years ago and then quickly bought it back when the heard complaints that the new owners were not keeping up the tradition and quality they worked so hard for decades to maintain. Definitely worth a try to judge for yourself!!!
Stick to the basics and you will never be disappointed. La Guli is easily one of the best traditional italian pastry shops in Astoria, And their cannoli are as good as they come. The decor is very 1930s (probably the original fixtures). This place is not really a place to sit and eat. It is best enjoyed by ordering their awesome pastries and taking them home.
Grew up in Astoria, and as a kid, always thought they had the most delicious pastries. Since then, I have been all over the world, and still had trouble finding a place that was better. Everyone gets judged against La Guli. Still cant go into Astoria without grabbing a cannolli!

2022-03-29I think it’s great! Always been friendly to me and happy to help. I think people with bad reviews don’t realize it doesn’t strike me as the type of place that wants to make whimsical custom cakes. That just seems out of their lane and they don’t need the extra work. There are other places in the neighborhood for that. But what they do they do super well. So many fresh pastries cookies and cakes available daily. Italian classics and more. Always had friendly service when I have been in.

2021-09-05Amazing pastries, gelato, cakes and desserts from Italy! Great variety. You can find original recipes and typical sweets from different regions. I have ordered my birthdays fruit tart from them. Wonderful presentation, full of fresh fruit. The cream custard is accordingly to the original recipe. about. All my guests asked about this bakery!

2022-03-23Reviews are correct. Service is less then stellar and baked goods are not only extravagantly over priced but lack overall quality compared to other places which serve similar baked goods. During this post pandemic and lockdown craze, followed by our increasing inflation one would think such a place would basically close, especially charging excessively while quality suffers. A terrible combination especially when competition is fierce. I will no longer return. Customer service from the peon workers is also severely lacking. I get a glazed over look when ordering and simple gratitude is nonexistent.

2021-08-28I went there to inquire about cakes for a milestone birthday party. The woman behind the counter seemed like she didn’t wanna be bothered and couldn’t answer questions about cakes. (It is a bakery right?) She got a binder book with some pictures in it and flipped through it with an unamused attitude. She said these are the types of cakes I could try to get but I really needed to speak to the baker and the baker wasn’t there. I’m not sure how a bakery can’t give you ideas or ballpark prices on cakes. I’m assuming if you work there you should have some basic knowledge of what you sell. I left with the feeling that they really didn’t want my business so I took my money elsewhere. I gave two stars because the ices are good and because it is a piece of Astoria history but it needs to really update and work on customer service.

2021-03-19Omg. One of the best Sfingi di San Guiseppe I have ever had. Compares to Villa Abate in Brooklyn. I had to buy 5 due to my name day. A great Sicilian bakery and the cookies are to die for.
