Came here for dinner with the family. Simple decor, good service, food came out quickly but it wasnt anything special. Everything couldve used a bit more flavor although the curries were on point with their level of spice. Chicken with cashew nuts was a very bland dish, Cantonese style chow fun was a good portion but couldve used more flavor, beef chow fun was a normal Chinese dish, curry beef stew was nice and spicy, roti canai was typical. We also tried the roti tissue which Ive never seen before and it came out as a standing crispy, sweet pancake, no curry - amusing but not worth the extra that it costs. Overall was ok but there are other better Malaysian restaurants just a few blocks away.
I dont know why, but there is a shortage of good Malaysian restaurants in this neighborhood. Unfortunately, Langkawi was no different. It started out pretty okay. We ordered some roti, which was pretty standard, and some satay tofu - wasnt the best with its soggy cucumbers but could have been worse. Then my parents tried to order Hainanese chicken and they said they were sold out. It was only 2 pm at that point, so not sure what they were going to do about the dinner rush (or maybe they dont really get dinner rushes). Fine, so we ordered something else. My dad ordered the chicken curry with bone, and my boyfriend ordered the chicken curry without bone (this was an option on the menu). My dads dish came out looking like chicken curry. But BFs dish came out looking like Kung Pao chicken. We asked one of the servers and she confirmed it was Kung Pao chicken and walked away. So we told another server that we ordered curry and she tried to convince us that it WAS curry and that’s what the boneless version looked like! I dont know what kind of curry is sautéed with peppers and onions! We told them that if that was the case, we wanted to switch it to the curry with bone, and the server said, but we made this already. After we needed to persuade them that the KP chicken was in fact NOT what we ordered, they finally switched it out and brought us some curry. They have multiple people waiting on one table (not sure why) so I think thats what caused the confusion amongst them.I ordered the salted fish with shrimp and chicken noodles. These were only okay. It came with pork and squid instead of chicken, so it seems like they just throw whatever they have available into the stir fry.The only thing I really liked was my moms fish head soup. The fish wasnt the freshest, but the broth was the perfect combination of sour and sweet. Even so, I definitely wouldnt come back just for that.
Ive been eating at this place since it was still Nonya. The management has changed significantly, as has their food. Originally, the roti was made with a chef tossing the dough where the patrons could see it. It would come to the table looking like delicate parchment, tasting like rich butter. Now, it tastes more like it was heated from the fridge. The curry remained good enough. The Hainese chicken was a bit more undercooked than usual for a poached chicken. It was still edible. We tried something new and ordered the pineapple pork. What it turned out to be was similar to a sweet and sour pork you get from American Chinese food. It wasnt bad, but the flavors were a bit strong and the pork was more rubbery than crispy despite being fried. The satay servings were reduced so the skewers have less meat on them. The flavor is still good, at least.Decor was nice, with a bit more minimalist look than before. Service was decent. They werent extremely attentive, but they got the job done.Overall, the food is sadly downgraded from the original, and costs more. I suppose it is understandable, given the pandemic, and they do a good job keeping everything clean. Still, I miss Redang Island.
Here are my memorable experiences with this place. They served me spoiled beef skewers once. No matter how much seasoning you put on them things you cant hide the stench of spoiled meat. Another memory I have - a while back they had a person working the register who would count the bills very quickly like a bank teller. Then he would tell you youre short a dollar when you actually gave the proper amount. I thought it was just me so while I waited for my food I saw him do the same thing to another patron. I didnt say a thing but it was then I realized I shouldnt be coming here anymore. The only good thing I can say is that the restaurant has a great design.
Oh, man! Used to love this place. The Hainanese Chicken was so great and its Indian Pancake was amazing. We would take a detour to come to this place for just that. Now, we tried it again today. Ohhhhh. The quality of the food is going all way down. I dont mind you charge additional dollar. But please do the quality control.Half chicken is getting much smaller than it used to.Indian Pancake. I believe it is from Trader Joes frozen food.Never come back again.
We tried Langkawi for the first time tonight, and it was incredible. We didnt know what to order so we went off their most popular items, including the seafood fried noodles and the roti, and everything was so delicious, well-flavored, and fresh tasting. Not to mention, the service was great--the restaurant was extremely clean and the staff made sure to confirm our order before we left, which I really appreciated. The portions were generous and I cant wait to have the leftovers tomorrow. Going to order from Langkawi again really soon.
This restaurant unfortunately replaced the renowned Nyonya after the former operated this spot for decades. The taste did change on some classic recipes because of the new chefs. However, its still the best Malaysian restuarant in, and a forever-hearted part of, 8 Avenue Chinatown. The wait staff here also never ceased to be friendly and is filled with Malaysian hospitality. The Roti Canai and Hainanese chicken on rice are two of the most popular and my favorite dishes here. Intriguingly, this place has never accepted credit cards after all these years.
Not the same restaurant as before. Bad customer service and bad food quality. Take out takes forever while restaurant is mostly empty. Someone ate in gets their food in 10 mins. and almost finished their food but I still havent got my order I placed 45 mins ago. (4 dishes only and told me it would take 20 mins for pick up.) Owner didnt even tried to give an apology. Never going back ever.
Very fast service but low quality food. Its no longer a good Malaysian place, now instead a Malaysian /Thai menu. I got the rendang chicken. While the curry was good, the chicken pieces were not. A couple were more bone than meat, one hid a bone inside and most of them had skin.Dont come here expecting Nyonya.
Mannnn, I had high hopes for this restaurant that replaced Nyonya. I love SE Asian food and this seemed so promising. But, unfortunately their takeout was rather subpar. I opted for the dry noodles with curry chicken -- a decision to be a bit adventurous rather than choose what I normally get which is curry chicken on rice. Unfortunately, the only difference was that instead of rice, I got semi wet noodles. The chicken didnt vary whatsoever and it wasnt particularly tasty. Plus, I had found a hair in the food that really ruined my appetite.Everything else was decent, at best, and their lo yu san, something we love to get during New Years from every single Malaysian restaurant that serves it, was subpar. The fish was off and clearly not sashimi grade. The Ingredients were stingy for the price and just wasnt very tasty.Sadly, my hopes for a good Malaysian/Thai replacement for Nyonya was thwarted and I have yet to have a good Malaysian restaurant in 8 avenue.
Saw this short young asian guy with glasses working the counter take an order back to the kitchen to steal a customers take out food. The to go order was some fried rice dish was full to the top of the lid. He saw it and smiled while taking it back to kitchen and came out with a good amount of the fried rice gone. Shady as hell. careful when you people order take out. They will eat your food while you pay for it. Dude didnt even care that I saw, must do it pretty regularly.
The food is fair. The server is not great at all. They dont remember to give us the drink and they have to be reminded 3 times. On top of that they told us that we have to pay 20% tips a party of 4. When it is not even written in the menu that it is required. The server definately is a bully. Not going back definately.
Recently renovated over the summer. New decor looks good. Their food remain the same in terms of flavors. They updated the plating and presentation, which is good but also in a bad way. I found some dishes on the smaller side in portions. Other than that, Ill always be back for their salt and pepper calamari, nasi lemak, and shrimp and okra malaysian style.
How the mighty has fallen. Ive lived in Brooklyn my whole life and this WAS one of my favorite places. Ive moved away three years ago and this is the second time I made a point of coming here when I returned. I wont be doing that again. Its cash only. The food was okay, no longer outstanding, but like another person commented, this service is terrible. I was given an awkward seat in an empty restaurant. The busboy was rushed and sloppy and splattered something on my sisters shoes from a nearby table. The waitress ate her own dinner with her back to us so we couldnt get her attention. They list beer and wine but had none to offer. The mango chicken in a mango shell had no mango shell display. The chicken was fatty. The one highchair had a broken strap. Very few staff members spoke English. Our water was not refilled. Its really a shame. There are a lot of new nice restaurants in Brooklyn Chinatown now. They will certainly fall to the competition with this kind of service.
One of the better Nyonya locations in NY. Cheap eats, and fast service. I cant imagine the sodium count with each dish. I highly recommend the hainanese chicken and one of the sizzling platters. They also have some rice dishes under $7 and it comes in a heaping portion.Their coffee is uber strong and delicious (probably loaded with carbs too!).
Worst experience EVER!! I have been here many times, but today was the worst ever!! Sunset park nyonya is known for bad service, but being rude was not the only problem today. Long story short. Messed my order up, then they charged me $1.75 in tax for ordering a $7.95 dish. When did NYC tax became 20%? Then they chase me for tips when I left $10 on the table. How much $ do they want when service is bad? Take it from the overcharged tax!!!!
Went the on a Saturdy and ordered Roti Canai and steamed perch. The fish was done just right, which was not an easy task. Kang Kung Belacan was also good -- very fresh and done just right. However, it comes with fishy paste. My date doesnt like it. Its an acquired taste.
Horrible customer services, who the fk will standing couples feet away from our table and stare at us while we eating. I only could think of two reasons : first, their boss didnt feed them enough food and they got hungry while we eating. Second, want us hurry the fk finish eating, so they can receive another tips from another group.
This place has been around 8th ave forever, without WITHOUT changing their name. Their signature appetizer roti canai (Indian pancake) is very thin and slightly crispy, and is delicious when paired with the savory curry sauce. Another dish theyre known for is the Hainanese chicken, which you can order a half chickens worth to share or for with rice for an individual. Their menu of rice and noodle dishes are flavorful and very reasonably priced, all which contribute to the success of this restaurant after all these years.
I dont eat a lot of meat butWish they had refills of These dishes. Its my favorites:Home Made Roti Canai (Indian Pancake)Curry Beef Stew Casserole*Fried Rice With Salted FishKang Kung Belacan*Shrimps W. Ladies Finger Malaysian Style*Shrimps W. String Beans Malaysian Style*Crispy Golden Fried SquidsSarang Burong
The food tasted ok but wasnt authentic Malasyain ,basically Chinese food .It had a lot of flavor but after an hour I realized why. They put so much MSG into the food I almost fell asleep while driving and my stomach was inflated .No good .Go to Queens for authentic Malaysian .
This was my third time eating at Langkawi. I was craving fried food so I ordered Calamari since I know that they make really good fried foods - taro birdnest has incredible texture and the Calamari was nothing like others. It was amazing! I’ll be back to Langkawi very soon I think.
So bad, so many opportunities! There will be no next time. I would rather go to 8ave 60-59st Malaysai restaurant. My whole family from Malaysia. Egg skating, it’s hard to eat and the water is so good. The chef must not be a Malaysian. My parents are hard to eat. I don’t have the most basic common sense of wearing green peppers, and I don’t even know how to wear peppers. And its so expensive. So dont make you lonely
Attitude is really bad. Not sure if its because Ive been in other states too long or what. Anyway, how much you tip in other states is up to your heart, but this store enforces tipping. I ordered four items for $55, $55+$7tips = $62, and the maximum is 62, but they took me away for $67, this store looks like a robber. Really bad attitude. Very bad experience!Because of the recommendation of others, I came here to eat Malaysian meals, and the results were extremely disappointing! In terms of service, there is no waiter to take the initiative to dispense the soup. We also want to remind us that the air conditioner is abnormally cold, which causes the food to cool too quickly. When the checkout is made, the receipt is directly charged with an 18% tip. Didnt ask us at all? The following tips are also written: 15%, 18%, 20%? And the tax has been added to the receipt, but told me not to swipe? Can I pay only in cash? Simply unreasonable! If the food is delicious, in fact, the above does not matter, but the most important thing is that the dishes are also very difficult to eat, because I cant remember the name of the dish, and I havent taken pictures, so there is no way to elaborate one by one, I only remember The fried squid is super salty! It’s like eating a handful of salt! Iron plate beef or fried beef? The bottom is completely burnt and sticks to the plate! In short, will not come again! Poor difference!

2021-08-11I came to here to have dinner has been awhile .However, the prices rising didn’t follow with food quality and service. The boss absolutely stingy ! The food only a little ! In high peek , only one waitress in the restaurant. Wow, I can tell the boss probably very cheap so nobody wanna working here .Please be generous!

2022-06-08This place was never as good as Redang Island across the street which closed last year. Just generally mediocre. That style of food needs to be home cooked and authentic or its just like a bad Chinese take out Even the sambol, which freshly made and savoy are a unique signature for an authentic cuisine and regional style tasted like it store bought at the supermarket. Would be like a fine Italian restaurant putting ketchup on the pasta.Plus the show stopper for us was the hair I discover curled up in my Maylaian Buddhist vegetable dish. Gross! We just asked for the bill and left. Very disappointing on top of the disappointing cuisine.Im not sure why the place gets decent rating but Ive been surprised before. Of course we only sampled 5 dishes. Very disappointed. The decor was nice. Most people seemed to be ordering gaudy looking pineapple fried rice! Who knows? Leave this place for the tourists is my advice . Brooklyn Chinatown does a few satisfying restaurants. Well keep looking elsewhere for. Malaysian There are a couple in Queens that are worth the trip though.

2022-06-13Its a decent Malaysian restaurant, especially since there arent many in Brooklyn sunset park area. We got the roti canai ($6), Nasi lemak ($16) and Chow Kuew Toh ($16). I asked for my noodles extra spicy and it came with not an ounce of spice at all. I had to ask for extra sambal. Odd that their in house sambal isnt spicy either. The service was prompt and the food came out quickly. Bathrooms are clean, which is rare for 8th ave Chinatown restaurants. They also didnt rush us from the table, also another Brooklyn Chinatown rarity.

2019-04-22Had some expectations for this place since it used to be Nyonya, but the taste seems to have changed (I presume b/c the chef/owner has changed). The taste is not up to par to what Nyonya was able to serve, but it’s not terrible. The service was nice and the prices are actually rather fair for their portions. It is cash only though.I ordered Hokkien Mee, Asam Laksa and Roti Tissue. The Hokkien Mee was lacking in the taste and is not as strong as I would prefer for this dish and that I’m used to. The Asam Laksa was also lacking in taste and seemed to have less ingredients than what is normally supposed to be in it. I really looked forward to the Roti Tissue since most Malaysian restaurants in NYC only serve Roti Canai and it was alright. Roti Tissue is just a sweet version of the bread for Roti Canai so it’s worth a try if you haven’t had it before.I’m unlikely to return, but it’s alright for a one-time choice. The Iced Malaysian Tea tasted decent though so at least they didn’t go wrong with the tea. Also, the food was served timely and the servers were respectful and responded quickly so that does add some plus points.

2020-03-09Food was very good; although, my main dish was a little too sweet for my taste. The serving was plentiful. Staff was patient and courteous. Reasonably priced menu, most items around $10.

2021-04-25Was a mix experience in this Malaysia restaurant. Ordered a dry curry stew on rice, some of the beef were tough some were soft but the taste is great, the quality is not consistency. Then the Hainanese Chick leg with rice was excellent. The service was not so on par, the waist was trying to take away my food while consuming, not once but twice! Also slow or missing item that asked for. That was the key one reason of taking one star off (before the beef)

2019-03-30I was looking to have lunch at the Malaysia place on 8th Ave called Penang and realized the name changed to Langkawi, a Thai & Malaysia cuisine. The food quality is pretty much the same compared to the old days. And I will come back again.

2019-04-30One of the staple Malaysian spots in Brooklyn. This is the only Malaysian place that has good food at a decent price. Nyonyas quality has went down hill.

2018-07-22This is the Brooklyn branch of the same restaurant originated from Boston Chinatown. Even the slight elevated slope of the interior floor of the restaurant mimic its Boston counterpart. The food is decent and its one of the only place that offer Roti Telur, the traditional indian bread coated with eggs thats adapted by the malaysian as their appetizer. Lunch and dinner get packed here, especially the one in Boston because there arent that many good asian restaurant in Boston. But reservation is not necessary. Almost everything u order on the menu is delicious.
