Really bad experience - this doctor completely ignored my symptoms and the complaints about my throat pain and inflammation. I told him that I previously took antibiotics and steroids, but my symptoms came back- he said it was all stress related instead of looking into my problem and ordering CT scan. He also never returned my phone calls after my throat pain became unbearable again. Ultimately, a week later I ended up in ER diagnosed with a terrible peritonsillar abscess - In ER they drained it with needles and made cuts with a scalpel... Now, his office is sending me a bill and expect me to pay for his medical error and misdiagnoses that led me to suffer so much pain...
If you want an experienced doctor who will take your health and well-being seriously then go to Dr. Shemen! He will tell you things straightforward and provide you with the best options available. If you have questions he will take the time to answer them! If theres a procedure to be done he goes in detail about whats going to happen. His staff is friendly and respectful and his Surgical Coordinator Jeff is one of the most kind and hardworking people Ive met when it comes to private Doctors office. My father is seen by him, which if it werent for Dr. Shemen dont know where my father would be, and Im seen by him. Had surgery done and the Doc and his staff were always one phone call away. I cant say enough of the gratitude I have for this establishment.
Dr. Shemen is a very nice person and he treats his patients with kindness. My mom had a surgery where her thyroid gland was removed. Dr. said that the scar will be minimal and that’s exactly what happened !!! My mom is so happy. He makes sure to listen to any questions or doubts one may have. You will not leave the office looking confused. Also, the girls at the front desk are very friendly and helpful.
Dr. Shemen came highly recommended to me by my endocrinologist. After struggling with Hashimotos Thyroiditis (hypothyroidism & enlarged thyroid) for nearly 20 years, it was time for me to have my thyroid removed. Dr. Shemen did an evaluation, and quickly confirmed my thyroid needed to come out. My research revealed he is one of the top surgeons for this procedure in the area, and after meeting him and interacting with him, he gave me the confidence I needed to go forward with the surgery. He is a kind, efficient, knowledgable and professional doctor who runs a tight ship. His office is clean and his employees are helpful and kind. Big props to Jeff, who helped me schedule my surgery and was phenomenal at getting everything ready and checking in with me.The morning of the surgery, Dr. Shemen was there to answer all my questions and even joked with me in the OR. He kept my fiance up to date after the procedure, and was available right away when I called at off times during the week for a prescription refill. Finally, he was there to greet my fiance and I on my follow up appointment a week later. He clearly remembered everything about the surgery, and was happy to go through it with me...now that I was awake!Ive resisted doing this surgery for 20 years. Now that it is done, I cant recommend Dr. Shemen and his team highly enough.
Dr. Shemen performed a successful radical maxilectomy on my husband in 1999 and has been overseeing ongoing care all these years.. Since oral, head and neck cancers require a long term relationship with the surgeon, having someone as skilled and emotionally supportive as Dr. Shemen has been outstanding. We would recommend him without qualms.
Wow! Dr. Sherman is Amazing. When I came to Dr.Sherman I was a bit nervous and scared because I knew I would need surgery. I read the reviews online and they all seemed to recommend Dr.Sherman so I decided to go to him. I thought I just had a deviated symptom. However, when I saw Dr. Sherman he calmly told me exactly what I need to do, and when I didnt understand him he patiently explain it again. I scheduled an appointment with Jeff. Jeff thank you so much for explaining what I have to do before the surgery and checking post surgery. Dr.Sherman did an amazing job on the surgery. He said I had a really bad deviated symptom and sinus. Dr Sherman staff is amazing. Now my favorite thing is to be able to breathe and smell.I am so happy that G-D sent me to Dr. Sherman and his wonderful staff.
This is a very, very fine doctor. My thyroidectomy was literally painless and left the smallest visible scar imaginable. I had received very worrying news after my biopsy and was full of anxiety and concern. He was thoroughly professional, direct and fast-acting in all of his dealings with me - a man of few words I must admit, but also very polite, sincere and clear. He took control of my situation and filled me with confidence from the moment I walked into his surgery. I cannot believe how fortunate I was to have been his patient and recommend Dr. Shemen very highly. Feb 2018
I came to Dr Shemen for chronic sinusitis, and got answers very quickly. Within 2 weeks, i had a CT scan scheduled and within the month for a balloon sinuplasty in an outpatient setting. Dr Shemen and his team were reassuring and supportive through the whole process. The music they played during the procedure helped to calm the nerves. Since then i have felt so much better. Very grateful for such professionalism and care
Seeing Dr. Larry Shemen was completely life changing. Before the surgery, I had an S shaped deviated septum that made me feel like I was breathing through coffee straws through both of my nostrils. That, and my slight weight problem made It a challenge that my previous doctor felt uncomfortable performing surgery on. Dr.Shemen took on that challenge, and did a FANTASTIC Job! Not only did he fix my life long problem, but I also did not suffer any side effects whatsoever. Now my favorite thing to do Is to go out, and breathe In the fresh morning air. If you need help, Dr. Shemen and his great team will take care of you. Thank you Dr. Shemen. Sincerely, Daniel P.
Dr. Shemen is great. Very professional and doesnt beat around the bush. Tells you everything you need to know. Tells you if youre doing something wrong. Straight to the point with no sugar coating. His very casual straight shooting might come off as cold to some but its not. Its whats needed.I was having trouble with my sinuses. Went to him. Told me things I was doing wrong. Things i needed to be doing. Ended up needing surgery for removing polyps in my nose and a deviated septum. Surgery went well. The healing process can be irritating (ESPECIALLY the first night after surgery) but after the 2-3 weeks healing process, I have never taken such clear breaths from my nose. Breathing better. Sleeping better. Helped with my snoring. It was a process but worth it in the end.The staff in the office was also very friendly and helpful through everything, which is a big plus for patients.
I went to Dr Shemen shortly after having a baby and found out I needed surgery. I was not an easy patient - rescheduling the surgery more times than I can remember, asking a ton of questions - but despite my behavior Dr Shemen and his staff were true professionals. The surgery ultimately went well and I am pleased with the results. Thank you.
Dr Larry Shemen is an excellent doctor. His shows great care for his patients. I was grateful for his willingness to explain things again and again. Because of this I was always clear what the next step was. His staffs are also amazing. They were always ready to help us.
WOW!! Where do I begin, God never comes as my family says but he always sends. I had my thyroid condition (hyperthyroidism/enlarged goiter) since the age of seven and have been suffering with it since. I am now 20 years old and the problems it has caused leading up to this age is beyond explainable. For a few years now, I was seeing an adult Endo doctor and to my understanding he didnt know what he was doing! On June 30, I went to the Emergency Room because for the last two weeks I was having pain while swallowing anything. Anyhew, they ran tests and did a CT scan that showed a massive goiter with toxic thyroid levels. Long story short, was admitted for 3 days to do surgery and they did nothing. I left everything in my hands and looked up a surgeon of my own to get a second opinion and boy was I happy! I came upon Dr. Larry Shemen. The following week (July 10, 2018) I met with him and thats all it took; he took a look at the CT scan which revealed all and the following month he said Lets schedule you for the surgery. A week ago, I did the surgery and yes at first for the couple of days I wasnt my normal self, but today (August 15, 2018) I can honestly say I am myself again, only 100x healthier all because of Dr. Shemen. And yes, while there are other good doctors out there, I know they couldnt have been better than Dr. Shemen. My neck is now beautiful, not to mention normal, and I could care less about the incision scar because it was done so precise and with care it doesnt bother me at all! I want to thank Dr. Shemen for his genuine personality, Jeff, his scheduler for being so kind as well and always keeping me updated, and his staff for treating his patients with care, which is the most important. It took 14 years and finally I found a doctor that knew what he was doing, literally!! DR. Shemen knows his stuff and hes excellent in his profession, couldnt and would never have asked for a better surgeon than him. If you are in need of a Surgeon in this field, take my advice you will never regret it and will see the results with Dr. Shemen. I highly recommend him and now my friends and family finally see the beautiful neck that was hiding behind that toxic goiter for so many years all because of one man, DR. LARRY SHEMEN! Thank you very much for everything, I appreciate it so much!
Dr. Shemen diagnosed me with a deviated septum and performed surgery to correct it. I had a quick recovery and was even able to scuba dive only 3 weeks after surgery. I can now breathe through my nose and sleep very well, which has greatly improved my quality of life. He is the best. Thank you Dr. Shemen!
Dr. Shemen is a cool guy. Hes sort of intimidating with his casualness but I found this to be comforting. He is quick to make his diagnosis and explains it until it is understood.I went through a pretty invasive surgery. . Needless to say when he told me he would be doing surgery on neck in 4 weeks I sort of panicked. Dr. Shemen assured me this was a common surgery with minimal risks involved and also a surgery he does often. He made it sound like the cutting into my neck and removing a piece of bone was going to be just another Tuesday morning for him! I remember laying on the surgery table as Shemen and his assistant preppared. Dr. Shemen speaking in a stern and know it all manner towards his assistant. Sort of acting like the big shot doctor in town because well- hes pretty darn good! After surgery my recovery was short and exactly how he described it to be. There was never a feeling of doubt or confusion in my experience with Dr. Shemen. I would highly recommend Dr. Shemen based on his knowledge and understanding of the practice as well as the overall ease that came with having to have a scary surgery.
SAVED MY FACE and I CAN BREATHE!!!!Dr. Shemen has been my doctor since he operated on me in 1986! I was a young woman heading into my last semester of college when I noticed a small lump below my left ear. My primary sent me to an ENT specialist in New Jersey (where Im from). As soon as he saw me he said the best doctor to handle this fast growing tumor was Dr. Larry Shemen in NYC. If one ENT refers you to another ENT that is really saying something!I was young and scared but Dr. Shemen was confident and reassuring. He successfully removed the left parotid gland tumor. Unfortunately, it was very malignant and the cancer had begun to spread to the facial nerves. Another operation had to be performed. This could have caused gross disfigurement and considerable weakness to the left side of my face. Fortunately, with Dr. Shemens surgical skills he was able to excise the spreading cancer and save my face from debilitating disfigurement. Followed by a few weeks of radiation therapy, the cancer was cured and I was able to return to college the next semester! He also worked with me to strengthen the nerves after the surgery. Some years later, when my New Jersey allergist recommended I have a turbinectomy on the right side of my nasal cavity, it was Dr. Shemen who collaborated with my allergist and performed the surgery. He was the only one I would trust. Needless to say, I am breathing sooooooo much more clearer now! In fact, hes so good and precise that when I went to his office the day after the surgery to remove the bandages I happened to be wearing white scrubs. He asked why would I wear white when I knew he had to remove the bandages and there might be blood. I jokingly replied that I knew he was that good and not a drop would be spilt. And there wasnt!!! :-)Dr. Shemens office staff is also polite, professional and helpful. That is a comfort when one is scared and all sorts of arrangements have to be made.Ive been the last patient in to see him for a follow up and seen him taking out the vacuum cleaner trying to figure out how to change the bag to vacuum! Hes also chastised me for being late (NYC Traffic!!!!) because its not fair to the other patients he sees. Note: Not because its an inconvenience for him but in consideration of his other patients as well as for me. He runs a tight office (that hell vacuum himself).Dr. Shemen is a highly skilled, precise, professional in his field. Be confident that you are in good, kind and capable hands with him and his staff.MANY THANKS TO DR. SHEMEN AND HIS STAFF FOR OVER 30 YEARS OF SKILLED CARE AND SERVICE!
First and foremost, before I start this review I want it to be known that I was in a vulnerable place when I after visiting Dr Shemen. I was told after receiving a biopsy that I may develop thyroid cancer. I was shocked and worried. However the doctor was annoyed and treated me like I was overly emotional. The red flags appeared. I thought nothing of it at first, then he began rushing me to set up the surgery to remove the right lobe of my thyroid and telling me that I had to pay up front for a nerve monitoring rocedure that would not be covered by insurance (Later on I learned from two other ENT surgeons that performed thyroid removals many times over that the procedure was always covered by my type of insurnace.) Getting annoyed with my questions. I then made up my mind to get a second and third opinion. Apparently what the doctor forget to tell me that the surgery was not really needed due to the biopsy showing a low risk of cancer developing but the surgery itself could put me at high risk of damaging my ability to breathe and swallow due to a pre-existing condition of nerve paralysis that Dr. Shemen was aware off. Due to all this I decided to cancel my surgery with Dr. Shemen since I believed my health was not a high priority to him despite being hit with a $500.00 cancellation fee. On hindsight, probably a small price to pay to avoid serious harm. I am not telling anyone not to see this particular doctor, but be wary and always ask for a second opinion. As for myself, Dr. Sheman will no longer have my business.Update: In response to your disingenuous and quite unsurprisingly condescending rebuttal, I was not mad about the cancellation fee. Its all a part of doing business and paying for the consequences for undue diligence of questionable parties. I disturbed by your lack competence in explaining a very serious risk factor for a surgery that was for a low risk of developing into something else. Maybe you were more focused on getting paid for the nerve monitor that is actually covered by most insurance. I end this by saying that its is paramount to always ask for a second opinion. It may save your life.
I was supposed to get thyroid surgery this September but Dr Sherman/Dr Jeff their staff very respectful. They told me that I had to pay $1,500 and $750 up front because my health insurance did not cover a nerve in my throat that the Dr had to take out in doing the surgery, I said let me call my insurance and notify this then she told me if my insurance calls her she couldnt give information So Why Do I Pay Insurance I told her! So I asked her if I can pay with Visa/MasterCard she jumped but of course but I need $750 up front? Really! Not going to pay$1,500 to no body 6 days later I got my Surgery and only had to pay $50co payment... watch out with these people not trustful at all.... thank you Dr Sherman/Jeff FOR NOTHING!!
Dr. Sheman is very thorough and knowledgeable ENT doctor. He was able to help me significantly with my sinus problem. He explained everything he was doing. The plus point of his service is detail discussion about your disease. Secondly, office is well organized and service of staff is fully professional and efficient.
Dr. Shemen is very thorough and to the point. He does not talk unnecessarily. He explained to me the procedure and what I should expect from beginning to end. I recommend him for his professionalism and his work.I am very satisfied with my procedure and the way that I am healing.Thank you, Dr. Shemen!
Life changing experience for me. Dr. Larry Shemen’s professionalism and honesty is highly appreciated and respected ( he’s doing some of gods work with his hands and intelligence ) I highly recommend him to anyone. Don’t waste time make an appointment and face your fears, you will not regret it.
I want to start off by saying thank you so much Dr. Shemen! You were so kind and patient with my mother. After doing the surgery you could barely see the scaring. Which was something I was afraid of for her. I waited over a year to do this review, but should’ve done this sooner! Once again thank you, thank you and thank you again!
Terrible treatment.. Staff member hung up on me when I inquired about the billing codes so I can get an estimate from my insurance. he said Try another doctor. and hung up, this happened at 9:15am on July 19th 2019. Yes, I will try another doctor where I will receive civil and professional treatment as I usually do. I have premium insurance and work at a prestigious bank and Im used to top shelf services. this staffmemeber has no business being in healthcare.Update:. You must be confusing me with another patient. I have coverage. And I only called once. And I asked politely. I did.not express anger. I work for a big bank and have one of the best coverage options available. And I know your practice is.in network. That is not the trouble. It is just that your staffmember did not.wish to answer my question regarding billing which I wanted.to know to assess the copay amount. A single conversation. And.I did not follow up.
Horrible Experience! The Doctor is arrogant and very disrespectful. The sad part is all the reviews are from employees seeking to enhance the online reputation for the Doctor. Make sure to get a second opinion if your first choice is Dr. Larry Shemen for a septoplasty or any ENT related symptoms.
Arrogant! Went in for my chronic ear infection, chased me out telling me I was just over weight & nothing wrong with my ear, twice! When I went to the next ENT doctor, he told me if I didnt get treated right then, I would have really became what my professor used to call me when I went deaf each time I got my ear infections, Lady Beethoven, after the composer, Lugwig van Beethoven! I went to another ENT doctor, he gave me the diagnosis right away & started treatment right away & my ears were fine in no time & that good doctor washome grown American trained doctor, never arrogant!!
Dr Shemen is a true professional who always takes the time to answer all questions after each visit and procedure. He comes highly recommended by his peers and has helped me throughout my ordeal with tongue carcinoma - my surgery was a success- and I am very grateful to be under his care

2021-11-02Went to Dr. Shemen because of his great reviews. He dismissed my issues and seemed almost bothered by me. Thankfully I followed my gut and went to another doctor and after multiple tests found out that I have a major health problem. Had I listened to Dr. Shemen I’d be visiting him this month for a 6 month follow up. Good thing I found a doctor that wanted to help me.

2020-11-16Larry Shemen came highly recommended to me and I am so glad I had the privilege to be under his care. He is a brilliant surgeon and the outcome exceeded my expectations. I will NEVER go anywhere else. Ive been to 3 ENTs before and from the moment I sat in his chair, I knew I was in the best hands. His staff is friendly. Jeff is an absolute sweetheart and extremely efficient at handling the process leading to surgery and accommodating any of your needs and concerns. I now use the physicians theyve recommended to me for other medical needs because I trust that they only refer the same level of expertise as Larry Shemen. He deserves more than 5 stars.

2020-07-18I like Dr Shemen for his honesty and simplicity, my consultation was informative and straight to the point. Recently I went through nasal surgery. Dr Shemen was doing the operation, his team was very kind to me, they called me the same evening to ask how am I feeling after the surgery. I had my follow up appointment the next day, where they made sure that healing was going great. It’s been a month since my surgery now. I got sense of taste and smell back which I was missing for a few years!!! Thank you so much!!!

Very quick and painless recovery. Dr Shemen and his staff are very professional and very pleasant to work with. I had feeling of being in good hands during visits leading to and on the day of my surgery. Great doctor, great experience, great result.

2018-11-09I went to see Dr Shemen originally after being turned away from a different ENT Doctor, for a Micro laryngoscopy surgery. I explained my situation to Doctor Shemen and within a month I was scheduled for my surgery. Dr Shemen is a bit rough on the edges when you first meet him I admit but I assure you he is a fantastic doctor and warms up as you see him more often. I had a large polyp on my vocal cords removed, the entire process was painless and the operation was done very smoothly. His scheduler Jeff is fantastic as well, very patient and worked with my schedule. Doctor Shemen answered all my questions and showed me the before and after photos which I appreciated. When I went to see my PCP for clearance before my surgery he had told me that Doctor Shemen was one of the best in the field and that I had nothing to worry about, it seems that he was correct! My voice is now healed and better than ever! I couldn’t be happier. I would definitely recommend Doctor Shemen!
