Underwhelming experience. If the food had delivered, this could have been a great and unique experience with friends, but it simply doesn’t impress at all. We had a prefix menu with tiny little bites, confusing food combinations, and it came at an eye popping cost.As for the drinks, there were only basic liquor options, 5 average at best cocktails, and a bad wine list that charges top dollar prices (4 of the samples tasted like vinegar!). On top of that, the bill came to $375 per couple which is egregious considering the quality wasn’t even close to being there. For a James Beard award nominee, I really did not expect this. Instead it seems more like we paid for the James Beard nomination itself rather than the food and left w empty wallets and a hungry stomach. I give it 2 stars only because of the atmosphere which was unique for our area, quaint and fun. Outside of that, until this place can get their act together, you might want to steer clear. Too many other great options in this city to choose from.
Best dining experience of the year. Oopps...if I say that, I wont be able to get a table. Fantastic, thoughtful menu exquisitely executed with an exclusive wine pairing. Each course built up to an apex of delight for the entree, and an even better dessert. Mandatory reservation next trip to Buffalo.
Minuscule portions, uninspired food at ridiculously high prices and four very disappointed customers. No prior mention that the only menu option would be a $105/person pre fixe meal. We each had one drink before dinner and one glass of wine with dinner. So you would think that $650 for four people would get you a pretty incredible meal in Buffalo, but not at Las Puertas. I was so disappointed and aggravated with our experience, I took the time to write the owner/chef a letter. Several weeks later and I’ve still received no response. Apparently the owner doesn’t care about customer satisfaction, so I’m writing this review.
An absolute joyful and delicious experience. Leave your expectations at the door and put your faith & trust in the talented chefs at Las Puertas. I also love that I am walking around the West Side and can stumble upon this unsuspecting restaurant. From the food & drink, to the atmosphere, to the conversation and presentation dialogue I am never disappointed. The prices are absolutely worth it. You do not go to Las Puertas to fulfill your appetite for a burrito or some tacos, you go for a surprising and everchanging experience of taste and flavor, to experience the artistic work that is put into your food in the way that is put together, plated and presented.
Food was pretty good. Ambiance was excellent. Overall this place is good but its not great. I love what they are trying to do but they are missing the mark they are aiming for.Overall decent food but its overpriced and under-portioned for the level of flavor and experience.
We had an incredible eight course food experience, the kind that one would expect in a restaurant district of New York City, not on Buffalos west side. Each small plate was a delight. Not a cheap meal, but worth every bite of beautifully presented, complex flavored joy. The atmosphere is strangely comfortable for such high end treats. The eight course meal is what you get, no need to struggle over choices, however the chef also accommodated our no four legged diet issues. Just a great slow, delectable eating experience.
Enjoyable meal, quite pricey. For the price I dont expect more food per say but I would expect an impeccably clean restaurant. It was clean, but I expect clean ceilings, cleans windows, glass, no cobwebs in the corner, this is what one expects. Service is good. 3 different people bringing you food throughout the meal which is just okay. We did add the steak option, I would say its worth it.
Food and service were good. This place is pretentious and way too expensive for what you get. Very small portions, very high prices. Its obscene to mark up a $25 bottle of wine to $80. Our bill was more than our weekly grocery bill. Our dinner party, ended up hitting a pub for some grub because we were all still hungry. If you want to leave a restaurant with an empty wallet and an empty stomach, than this is your place. I can not afford to go back. Even though 2 of the offerings, were amazing, this place did not live up to the hype. Its a poor value.
Absolutely the best Mexican meal Ive had in the last ten years. we had the tour with a sampling of small plates about 8 courses, and it was fresh, colorful ,and flavorful beyond my expectations. small place we got in at 530 on Friday luckily without reservations. great drinks, service. we recommend it!
One of the best restaurants in the city without a doubt. Not only is the food fantastic but the chef is extremely proud of his food and you can taste that in every dish. Unique flavors and dishes, including one of the best pork dishes I have ever had. The owner/chef is incredibly kind and the stories he told us about the food and the way he described the dishes is something that Buffalo does not really have much of. He mentioned he was a classically trained french chef for many years and he is putting that haute cuisine care and thought into every dish using ingredients and flavors that are underused in almost every cuisine. Fantastic and I will be back. Also, Dessert is an absolute must, some of the most unique and fantastic desserts I have ever had. The banana flan was my favorite, not too sweet, and the slightly fermented hyper ripe bananas used to flavor it make it have one of the deepest banana flavors without being a total punch in the face of banana. Anyone that is into trying interesting flavors, and taking a journey of someones life through their cuisine, I cannot recommend this place enough.
We love supporting such a fantastic chef-owned restaurant. We have eaten here a couple times and I can’t believe there’s such a gem in Buffalo! The chef is incredibly engaged and passionate in explaining aspects of the menu, and the food is unique. Everything we’ve had has been absolutely delicious. Anyone complaining about the prices clearly has been spending too much time at Applebee’s—we thought the food was an incredible value for the quality, flavor, and service. Props to chef Victor!
Always a great experience here. Tried the tasting menu for the first time and Im not sure I can return to ordering from the regular menu. In Victor we trust.Chef owner Victor is a high end James Beard nominated chef, the atmosphere of the restaurant is quaint and intimate (not a whole lot of tables) and the menu is varied and changes seasonally.
Greeted warmly by the owner. He gave us a wonderful description of the menu offerings, and offered to pair wine with our choices. The atmosphere is light and lovely. The entire staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The food was superb, and the cocktails were Devine. A great experience!
We were not impressed at all. We just wanted some burritos tacos enchiladas and the like. Didn’t understand anything on the menu and was told we had to purchase the WHOLE menu at $90 a head! I just wanted to pick and choose what I MIGHT like. Nothing about the decorum even suggested Mexican. I’ve been in some very fine restaurants in the US and have never walked out because of price. My daughter was a chef at a very exclusive restaurant called the capital grill ( look it up) $45 for a steak that would melt in your mouth. I wouldn’t waste my time on this “Mexican” restaurant.
We went here this past weekend for my birthday. We were disappointed that we could no longer choose menu items they were all a prefixed tasting menu. I have a lot of food restrictions due to allergies. When we looked at the tasting menu, there were a few items I couldnt eat. The chef told us not to worry about it he would come up with something different for me, so we decided to stay. Well when the one course came out that I couldnt eat, the chef brought me literally a 1/2 teaspoon of sherbet?! This was insulting, if he couldnt accommodate me and my restrictions he should have told us from the start, we would have went somewhere else. That same sherbet was in the last course so it was not anything special. He could have just given me an extra portion of one of the other courses if this was the case. It is very expensive and portion sizes are very small so you may want to eat something small before going if you are going to check it out. The courses were presented beautifully and the courses were very unique but my experience left a bad taste in my mouth unfortunately.
Everything about this place is 5 stars. The atmosphere is very intimate and upscale, and the service is top notch. Went in for the live music and some cocktails. The owner was behind the bar and is an impeccable host - shared his knowledge on his training and history. The food was all beautifully prepared and the cocktail menu is amazing (the cocktail I had enhanced the flavor of the mezcal versus masking it). Cant wait to come back!
Not getting the rave reviews on here either. There were 4 of us that visited recently to try a new place. The food came out cold and the portion sizes were VERY small and extremely expensive. The beef had a lot of fat on the pieces served. There was a limited beer and liquor menu. After spending $200, we left still hungry and feeling disappointed. However, the staff was friendly and it was a cute place. Do not think we will be returning - We could’ve spent the same amount of money at a Buffalo favorite and left satisfied and full.
Food was good but expected more for $85. Dishes were creative and tasty. Drinks likewise. However, we would not go back as the value was not there for us. Expect to at least go home full. Instead we went home thinking some of that was good, some was great, and we are still a little hungry.
A M A Z I N G!!!!! How is this restaurant/experience in Buffalo?!?! Service 15/10. Wine pairing? 20/10. The food? I can’t even use words that will do it justice - nuanced, bold, interesting, new, refreshing, comforting and just freaking delicious. If Buffalo could have a Michelin rated restaurant this would be it- hands down. Thank you to everyone at Las Puertas for making our New Year’s Eve a perfect night - one that we will treasure (but hope to recreate at your establishment again very soon!)
Went on a Thursday night with a group of 8 and Victor was a gracious attentive host who also happens to be the chef/owner. We had yummy drinks before diving into the tasting menu which left everyone in heaven with his use of flavors. We will all be back to try future menus
Always a great experience here. Tried the tasting menu for the first time and I’m not sure I can return to ordering from the regular menu. In Victor we trust. Each course was a unique bite I can’t say I’ve tasted before. It was a true bonding moment for my husband and FIL. Thank you for a memorable evening!
This was, quite simply, the best meal Ive ever had in Buffalo, and one of the best of my life. Everything is prepared with extraordinary care and creativity, each dish conceived anew with an amazing array of flavor notes. We tried many of the dishes (chicken, octopus, raman, salad...) and each was its own planet of fabulous flavor. Not to be missed!!!
A small piece of the very best of a true Mexican gastronomic experience located in Buffalo. This is where you go when you really want to enjoy high end, top quality Mexican food at a very reasonable price. Portions are on the small side and recommended to be shared. Highly recommend the Poblano chicken, the mushroom flat and the guacamole with a very peculiar twist and the chocolate dessert which is absolutely to die for. Do not come here expecting Cheesecake Factory type/size dishes. The chef who also owns the place has many years of experience at different locations including several years at a 2 star Michelin restaurant in Montreal. Enjoy the experience, take your time, and breath a little. They are still waiting for their alcohol permit but this should not be the reason to hold you back from this wonderful place.
Yesterday was my second time coming here and I was not blown away as the New York Times would suggest. I took my dad for Father’s Day and their wine list is very limited and EXPENSIVE. The cheapest bottle of red is $40. It was okay. You can go to a fine dining restaurant in Buffalo and find better and more affordable wine on the menu. The “Sangre de Toro” mezcal cocktail tasted basic. The food was good. But that’s it. Good. We had the ceviche, tamal, asparagus, and beet & hibiscus dishes. The pork in the tamal was dry and the rest of the dishes were good but unremarkable. The service needs work. Our water glasses were left empty for extended periods of time and after we finished our wine our server never came up to ask about other drinks; my brother had to go up to the “bar” to ask for a beer. I know chef Gonzalez is VERY talented but I was not blown away by any of this experience. Maybe I will try again when the menu changes because I have hope, but we all left a little disappointed.
Its a restaurant that changes its menu every 35 days. Format when we were there was Yukaton Peninsula food. Food cooked almost in front of you and delivered to you at perfect temperature. You get about 12 different dishes of food. So each dish is not overloaded with food so you can get thru the 12 dishes of food. Interesting concept by owner and he has been in business for over 14 years. Place is clean and food is served at nice temperature and right amount of food on each dish. Parking is on street. The place is pricey $90 each person but was worth it as a treat for a nice date with lady friend.
My wife and I were excited to eat here to celebrate our anniversary, but place unfortunately needs better management. Made reservations in advance given the special occasion. When we arrived to a half empty restaurant, we were told we would be seated at the bar “if that was ok.” I said it was our anniversary and that we had reservations so that wouldn’t be ok. Staff member just said the bar was all they could do. No apologies or attempt to get us a table as soon as one opened up with short term plan of a drink at the bar. Just made it seem like it was our fault or something. If this is common practice to seat reservations for 2 at the bar, it should have been made clear when I called to make a reservation that this was a potential. Normally don’t care much, but seemed a bit ridiculous for our anniversary when the place was so empty. If any effort was made to apologize and explain the oversight, I would have felt better about it and stayed, but the experience was already ruined so we left. Owner was not there and no one managing the place. Seems like an easy fix, and if the food and drinks are good, I hope they do.
Las Puertas is were you go to have a unique and one of a kind experience. The entree choices and atmosphere are wonderful. However, what made the experience unique was that the servers were actually the chefs as well. Each entree is hand delivered by one of the chefs and explained in detail. This was a first for me, I loved the concept. I would definitely go back. Delicious food, great service, unique experience.
After coming here almost a dozen times already, how this place doesnt have a Michelin star is beyond me. Having been to many top restaurants in the the world (Mirazur, Favaken, Disfrutar ect..), Las Puertas is among the best. The tasting menu changes with the season and has always been on point. Yes its a bit pricey, but only by Buffalo standards; high quality ingredients cost more. If you come here looking for Mighty Taco fare, please save yourself the 1 star review and go to Breezy Burrito.
Heres the summary: decent food, terrible value for your hard-earned money - ridiculously overpriced for the tiny portions, and HORRENDOUS service. It was my husbands bday last week so we decided to do a date night and celebrate with some friends. There were 6 of us total and I made reservations in advance. Hubby and I have been craving a good ceviche and everyone told us they had it there, so we were excited. They dont have menus online and when one of our friends inquired online, no one responded. So, we went in blind. We asked our waitress (who was extremely cold and unfriendsly) about ceviche since it was no longer on the menu, and she said they didnt have it on the dinner menu but it is on the Chefs tasting menu ($75/person). So we asked if it was possible to order it as a dinner dish and just charge us what they were charging on the menu before they changed it - it was a cold hard NO. Her attitude was so terrible that it actually made it worse. Mind you - we were all very nice and polite. We spotted her walking over to the kitchen and talking to the girls in the kitchen who then looked over at us. They quickly looked away though as soon as they realized that we were looking right back at them. So... I can only imagine what the waitress said to them. 5 minutes later, the owner came over and took our orders, and she was a little friendlier. We asked her about the ceviche and she said no its just not available at all, not even on the tasting menu. OK, well that makes sense then, although I wonder if she just said that so we would stop asking. Also, one of our friends never got her drink - they brought it over eventually but no apology whatsoever. Honestly, at this point, if we werent with company, we would have just paid for the drinks and gone somewhere else for dinner. But, we decided to stay and give them a chance anyway.4 of us decided to share food while the other 2 people shared their food. We ordered the roasted camote - basically just a fancy sweet potato for $12 - not worth it. The lechon con frijoles (pork belly) for $17, it was delicious and about the only dish that might have been worth the price. The potato with goat cheese was pretty good ($12), crab ceviche (16) which was NOT actually ceviche, as the definition for ceviche is a South American dish of marinated raw fish or seafood. This was cooked crab and to be honest, it tasted like artificial crab, not even real crab meat. We also got the asparagus ($13), the beets ($15), the carrot with green goddess dressing ($13), and tamal ($14) - which was just a little blob of roasted pork inside a big corn bun. Think corn tortillas mashed up and formed into the shape of a bun - there was just a little too much bun and not enough meat. We ordered doubles of the pork belly and potato dishes, and also a couple of desserts. Most of everything we had was pretty tasty, but all of them were just ridiculously overpriced, especially the vegetable dishes. I have eaten at restaurants ALL OVER THE WORLD including notoriously expensive cities such as NYC, San Francisco, Napa, London, and Paris. But I have to say, Las Puertas was the most overpriced meal with the worst service we have ever had.The entire 2.5 hours we were there - no one came to check on us. No one even looked over at our table even though they were passing by it all night long going between the kitchen and the rest of the tables, so we couldnt flag anyone down to place more orders. We had to quickly spit out our requests whenever they delivered our food or else they were GONE, and they looked annoyed and impatient the whole time. The bill came to almost $450 for the 6 of us, and honestly, the prices dont matter to me that much as long as its WORTH it. This entire experience - to say it was NOT WORTH IT is actually an understatement. We all left hangry, and will never be back. Maybe they had a better menu before but I will never pay $12 for a sweet potato or $13 for 3 carrot stalks again.
Wow, not getting the raves on Facebook. Four of us dined there Saturday evening and all were disappointed AND left hungry. Didnt think it possible to leave a Mexican restaurant hungry. I can onl;y assume the French aspect of the restaurant is due to the extremely tiny meal portions at French prices. We ordered the black bean soup, it was luke warm at best, as was the raemen (Mexican?) I ordered the braised short ribs with grits.....the grits were actually cold. All decided we wouldnt return.Location, location, location..............Not. Not easy to get to if unfamiliar with area. The one star is for the exceptional waiting service.
The service was ok,but I didnt think any of the entrees had much of a Mexican accent to any of the foods. Portions are extremely small for the price and the menu online is not a correct representation of the menu in the restaurant. I wouldnt recommend this place to a anyone.

2022-03-25Buffalo is lucky to have such an amazing restaurant. Everything about the decor, menu, and experience is extremely thoughtful.I would deter from listening to the negative reviews that state the portions are too small or its too expensive. My experience has been that I am perfectly satiated by the end of the meal - which I can only assume is intentional. They rotate the menu seasonally and its amazing to see what the chefs do with whats available. The wine pairings are also very well thought out and compliments the dishes. Everything is also well seasoned, having multiple elements that elevate the dish (salty, sweet, acidic, texture). The cocktails are also meant to be simple, but well made so you can taste every element.I wouldnt recommend Las Puertas to everyone. Its not for those who are used to your classic American or French white table experience or someone looking to stuff their face. This is definitely quality over quantity. However, if you have a large appreciation of the time and thought that goes into a tasting menu, a culinary adventure, and an open mind, I would highly encourage you to visit. Chef Victor, kudos to you and your team!

2022-05-17Dishes creative and tasty but too expensive ($125 per person ) for what it was (we left hungry ) - we were 6 and asked not to rush through (hardly anyone else there) but were rushed . Server was good but when she was busy I asked for a glass to another server - who nodded her head towards the other server and got on her cell phone albeit glasses were right in front of her. Wine selection is normal but all at $85 a bottle much too expensive. Bottle of white wine was extremely cold. Plates were at least beautiful.I have lived all over the world and have had dinner in many upscale restaurants - this is one I would not return to nor recommend.

2021-12-18Hands down one of the best restaurants in Buffalo (like top 3). Each course we had was ridiculously delicious. The timing of when the courses came out was thoughtful as were the portions. Each dish had a different texture, flavor, and experience and the wine selections were seriously too good. I rarely rate restaurants but the thoughtfulness right down to the music playlist really made our experience overwhelmingly joyous. Cannot wait to go back soon. Wish I took pictures but we were too invested in the experience.

2021-11-13First impressions were lovely interior and great service. The food was delicious. Only reason for 4 starts is that its a set tasting menu only. Thats not very clear on their website and we were surprised,as well as two other tables that came in after us.. Luckily no one in our party has dietary restrictions or issues with the menu served. It is a tasting menu so expect smallish portions, which are delicious and amazingly prepared, but small. $85 per person for 5 courses. Drinks were responsible. Probably will be back in the future.

2019-07-20Phenomenal experience. Be prepared to trust your palate to chef Victor and you wont be disappointed. His tasting menu makes you feel like your living an episode of top chef or at some high end restaurant in New York city or Los angels. Yes, its pricey but the level of food and service makes it worth it. Highly recommended!

2018-03-09Great service and some of the most delicious plates I’ve ever had. It’s truly unique and hand crafted with such passion. The guacamole is of course a crowd pleaser but there is so much more to this place. It’s well priced and again, an experience you won’t forget.

2018-07-19St amazing meal!!! We had dinner at Las Puertas in Buffalo last night....O M G! It was better than my highly esteemed Mexican meals at Rick Bayless Topolobambo in Chi-town...the space is small...reservations recommended...we came in as the doors opened and lucked out without them but the place was packed by the time we left... First course...amazing beet salad...sweet, salty, sharp taste of the tomatillo and crunch of the pistachio... Second course..potato and cheese..delicious and difficult to describe...beautiful with the bright green herb sauce...truly a lovely dish elevating the potato from ordinary to sublime! Third...cheese with herbs, fresh figs and fresh cherries...fourth pork belly....oh my!! Complex flavors all perfectly melded to bring out the amazing taste of the pork...fifth...chicken in a mustard and pistachio crust...chayote and greens...smoky broth..and the final..the tamal...light as air...the masa was a pillow hiding the most porky delicious filling...best tamal I have ever had..including on various trips to Mexico... Make the drive..you will not regret it!! Thanks to the folks at @whitecarrotrestaurant for suggesting Las Puertas!! #finedining #wny #buffalochefs #chef #laspuertas #laspuertasbuff #farmtotable #tamal #porkbelly #beets #eater
