On the walk in I knew I made the right decision, the aroma alone blew me away. I’m assuming it was the owner who treated me so well !!! I really felt like I was with family !! So polite which makes me want to spend my money. I Order the chicken Shawarma platter for my brother and chicken with lamb platter for myself both were served with Jerusalem salad and rice, the flavors are amazing this food tastes like someone’s grandma made it . Let me not forget to add that I was served hot tea while I waited and the tea was so amazing I’ve never tasted tea like that but I went back and asked could I have some more and the owner happily poured me a bigger cup I’ve never been so happy to spend my money in an establishment and the food was great better than great amazing !!!!!!!
11/10 !!!! Had the vegan sandwich, it was so delicious & my mama had the biryani and it was also so delicious. The owner was so sweet and had us both try a piece of the shawarma which they cut right in front of you. Also came with some sweet tea that was so good, have never had something like that before. would recommend this place to everyone!
Super hospitable host and amazing food. We ordered the chicken shawarma combo and the chicken and lamb plate. All of the items were freshly made and we got our food pretty quickly. The fries were crispy, and the salad fresh. The meat was tender and they bring it out to the dining area. The outdoor dining space is nice, incensed and has arabic music playing in the background. Most of all, they offer the best arabic tea and are very gracious in giving more! Must try!
I went there for a coffee first , while i was drinking coffee i checked the menu and there was a lot of nice looking food . Came back after on hour in a lunch time to try , it was one the best halal kind of food i have ever tried . Will definitely come back again. If you are traveling to new york , you should definitely try. :)
So happy we stumbled upon this place!! It is most definitely one of the best neighborhood spots we’ve found so far. We asked for their two best things (evidently the schwarma plate and the Arabic wrap) and both were SO INCREDIBLE and so different from one another. Even the fries were some of the best fries I’ve ever had! Also, they gave nice little ginger teas with the meal. We were 3/4 of the way through clearing our plates when they came out with a steaming bowl of rice pudding, telling us we needed to stay for dessert on the house. Overall, incredible food and service to match. Can’t wait to become a regular :)
We made a great choice by coming here for a late dinner after seeing a comedy show at nearby Caveat. Were vegetarian, and they have a small but very tasty vegan menu. We ordered falafel wraps with fries, and they were deeee-licious. The wraps were pressed, which makes them warm and gives them a little crunch. This is one of my favorite kinds of falafel wraps and it reminded me of Falafel Palace in Central Sq in Cambridge, MA (if you know, you know). The service was wonderful, and the staff was very welcoming by serving us tea while ordering and during our meal.
Ever since moving to the US from the Middle East 8 years ago, I have been looking for a shawarma that perfectly replicates what we have back home. Crispy, juicy chicken thats perfectly charred and seasoned. Not just chopped up chicken breast with some spices like most places around here offer. Think al Pastor but with chicken instead. Only pickles and toum, and maybe a couple of fries. The perfect bread thats not just a dry piece of pita. I am glad to have found this place - it hits the spot and is exactly what Im looking for. Real shawarma, nothing phony. Been having this place once a week since a friend recommended it. Must try if youre wondering what a real shawarma tastes like.
To be honest, most falafel places taste kind of the same after a while. Not Zyara though. Their Hummus is very delicious and a standout. Unfortunately delivery is a bit slow, but on the plus side they respect instructions like no plastic forks. Their Vegan mix grill gives you a good sampler of their tastes. The Stuffed Falafel sounded more interesting than it was, the stuffing is just a slight drizzle of some kind of sauce.
This is one of my favorite places. The hummus is smooth and delicious (comes w Pita bread, some olives & pickle). Falafel is one of the best I’ve had (and I’m not a falafel person at all).My fav thing here is the Vegan Arabic sandwich even though I’m not vegan or vegetarian. But their veggies are flavored & done so well that I always opt for this anyway. (If you do get it, I recommend having it right away instead of to go since the veggies would get soggy if left in the packaging for long. You won’t get the best version of what it’s supposed to be). The portion is HUGE. You can’t quite tell from the photo but it is really deep. I usually can only eat half before I am stuffed.Place is tiny but cozy. If you are having your meal here, you also get to enjoy sweet Turkish tea. 😋
I’ve eaten here 3x in the past 24 hours. The Shawarma sandwich is incredible, and at $5.25 it’s an absolute steal. Say goodbye to grocery shopping and meal prepping, say hello to a well-balanced diet of nothing but Zyara Shawarma (spicy, of course). Also, the kitchen plays loud dubstep and EDM mixes, which really gets you fired up for the food you’re about to consume.
We randomly stumbled upon Zyara on a slow Saturday afternoon in the midst of the pandemic. Little did we know that we had uncovered a gem in the heart of the lower east side restaurant scene. Zyara is a take away joint that serves fresh authentic Mediterranean sandwiches and Mezze. The Felafel and shawarma were the best Ive had in New York. We came back the next day and will keep returning to this oasis again and again.
The Best halal food place in NY City I wasn’t aware of. My wife found this place online. As soon as we reached there we were welcomed by this gentleman who offered us refreshing tea. He is a true professional. The food was amazing. Specifically the Falafel was great/different and unique from other places. Thank you for this experience guys.
Came here last night. It was really late so we opted for something light. I ordered their vegan shawarma and my friend ordered their Jerusalem salad. The flavors were fantastic! All the grilled vegetables were soft and tasty and the falafel was well-made. My only complaint was that they used too much oil, both for grilling the vegetables as well as in their dipping hummus.Friendly services and relaxing environment. Would be back again in the future for light food.
This place is simply phenomenal and i never feel bad about splurging on food here. The chicken shawarma is most authentic shawarma i ever tried or tasted here in the United States, and if you’re tryna satisfy those late night drunchies without hating yourself too much the next morning, the hummus and baba ganosh is a perfect choice. Don’t forget to say Hi to Khaleel (chef and owner of Zyara) for me pls 😅.
I tried the relatively new place on a whim. I cannot say how unbelievably good the food was. The portions and the price are very good. If you are in the mood for this type of food, GO HERE! Absolutely blown away by how good it was. Thank you for the portion size, the price and the quality of the food!!
I’ve been coming to Zyara since it opened this summer. I’m lebanese and tend to be picky when it comes to middle eastern food. The food is really great and the portions are very generous. Their Arabic bread is to die for, healthy and delicious. I’ve tried their shawarma and lamb sandwiches , their kebab platter, and mezze. They also have amazing sauces that go alongside anything out order. The owner and staff are very friendly and very professional. Highly recommend for those craving good middle eastern food!
Let me start with the app issues they encounter, they will charge your card and then tell you the refund may take a few minutes or days. The food is horrible 😫 so salty, i wasnt able to finish it. The fries were alright and the wrap was horrible as well. I will never order from this place again, overall 😒 evrything was just atrocious.
Used to come here when it was Zyara, which I would’ve given 5 stars. This new change has been a significant downgrade. First of all, it doesn’t take 30 minutes to make shawarma. And now the fries are inside it, and no extra sauce on the side? Not sure why they’ve anglicized and put the fries inside…Worst of all, when I asked why it took so long an employee told me they gave all customers a heads up. I didn’t hear them give me one, or the people ahead of me and behind me in line. And I confirmed it with them too.
I was in a rush and starving so I decided to look for a shawarma restaurant, but I really got sickened from the restaurants who think that they serve shawarma as a real one. But here they really serve an authentic shawarma and also their fries is super delicious. I told them that I was in a rush and they made my shawarma very quickly and I had a very friendly chat with the friendly staff there. Please when you go there say Hi to the two friendly and polite Ibrahims. Thank you for the great meal! Keep it up👍🏻
The wait was SO bad. They got swarmed after we ordered. We waited quite a while. Then our server (who was wearing many hats that night and was probably the owner as well) asked which of us ordered what. This doesnt inspire confidence. But granted, this is mainly a take out spot and they just have happened to tack on an outdoor dining set up and its a Saturday night. So I get it. Things get lost in the mass of orders. That said, the food was delicious! And we got a delicious mint tea afterward. That was a kind gesture.Would dine here again when its not busy.
I think this is the worst place I ever been to. I think I would get better food from a food cart for way less money. I ordered a bowl of chicken biryani which I played 12.75, for them to give me little bit of biryani and the other half plate was full of salad. Also the chicken smell so bad and taste uncooked, I would definitely not recommend this place.
Wow, unbelievable food and kindness. These guys brought a huge platter up to my top-floor walk-up, then unprompted, came all the way back up to bring me extra sauces. And on top of that, the shawarma was some of the best Ive had anywhere. This will be a new standby for me. Amazing place!
I was thinking about which places I would miss if they shutdown due to Covid and Zyara was at the top of my list. We have a lot of Middle Eastern food options in the city but none of them compare to Zyara. The owner is also really nice and sometimes give you free tea. Looking forward to being able to come back once things are normal.
My favorite middle eastern place! And I’ve been to so many and used to work at a Lebanese restaurant. Zyara’s vegan Arabic sandwich is incredible, and their service is so friendly and great. I’ve brought all my friends and now they come too. The food is so fresh and tasty and packed with actual vegetables seasoned so well. I eat here at least once a week. Also great prices.
I stumbled upon this place for the first time with a friend and we were both amazed! I got the Arabic shawarma while she got the vegan sandwich. It was so delicious, with each bite tasting heavenly! The owner, Khaleel, was amazingly friendly and hospitable. High recommend this place and will definitely be back!
Lava Shawarma (formerly Zyara) is a cozy Middle Eastern counter-service eatery, thriving in the Lower East Side.a relaxed takeout restaurant. the space is clean and brightly lit. there are a couple of small tables to dine in- max seating is like 7-9 people. theres also an additional two-top table outside. theres been a resurgence of casual Middle Eastern / Mediterranean eateries in the LES area andi cant say this is the best falafel ever, but its pretty damn great. the falafel is on-point. crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, full of flavor and Middle Eastern spices. four of these falafel gems are stuffed into a pita along with jerusalem salad. and tahini is served on the side with the falafel pita. let me tell you the pita sandwiching all of these deliciousness are thick, yet pillowy...id guess they are baked in-house because they have that homemade touch. all said and done, the food here tastes fresh and you can smell, taste, and see it in the eats here.falafel pita is $10 + tax + tip. the menu is fairly wallet-friendly. however prices here have been rising rapidly. i feel like the falafel pita as well as other platter and sandwich options have has gone up a couple of dollars in just about a year.the service is friendly and pretty much a one-man show by the owner. a lot of care goes into each dish served.
The food is so bad it’s like normal rice we eat chicken biryani the chicken is so hard my friend order shawarma and he can’t because of the smell is so bad also comparing to other restaurants the price is so high and we have to wait 50 minutes after we order because they forgot about our order so over all I don’t think it’s a best restaurant to go and eat they need lot of improvement
Tried this resturant when they first open. OMG. , very nice food and service. I tried it few days ago, not the same. The service is slow, very disorganized, you place your order and it gets loss somewhere. The workings cooking the shawarma are rude and barley want to help. I tried to explain that I didnt want type of veggie in my sandwiches. The guy started to raise his voice on the customer. Also, the area where the prepare the food is very messy.
We went to the store on Friday and we arrived at 12:45 they said that the store was closed and said that you could come back at 1:00. We came back they said they were closed and that we should come back at 2:00. So we walked around the area and came back at 2:00 they said come back at 3:00! I had a VERY bad experience and will never go there again. I would 100% not go to the store. It was a horrible experience very bad.
Probably my favorite Mediterranean place in the entire city. I make my boyfriend come with me to get the shawarma plate there probably once a week. The people working behind the counter are super friendly and the owner is there he will sometimes get you tea or soup for free. Highly recommend their chicken shawarma plate and their hummus.
THIS LOCATION IS NO LONGER ZYARA!!! IT IS LAVA. The food here USED to be fantastic. Do not know if it is under new ownership or what, but recently had one of the worst schawarmas in a laffa of my LIFE. I have travelled alllll across the middle east, so yes- I do know what I am talking about. Breaks my hear to leave a bad review, but the truth is when the french fries are the highlight of the meal- you know its bad. Next time will go to the REAL Zyara in Astoria and not waste my time.
My favorite place for falafel. I regularly go looking for new falafel places, but now I will stick with Zyara. They are perfectly crunchy on the outside and impossibly creamy in the middle, with the flavors of chickpea, cumin, and maybe cardamom coming through nicely. I love it with all the pickled veggies, hummus, and baba ghanouj. But those are just the basics. This is also a great place for veggie forward dishes as well as shawarma. The owner is usually in here alone, working hard late at night. Yet he always prepares the food with care and friendly attention. Must try the vegan Arabic sandwich!
The place is very small with few seats. The door opens towards the seating area, so be aware that on a day like today, you will eather eat with your coat on or you will be extremely cold. Other than that I enjoyed the place and thought the food and service deserved 5 stars. I went in craving a gyro but they were out. The gentleman behind the counter recommended the lamb shishkebab, saying it was very good. I told him that I was trying to stick to a budget and that that meal cost more. Guess what? He offered to make a pita with the lamb shishkebab for the same price as the gyro! I thought that was so sweet of him. I decided instead to go with the chicken shawarma and it was sooooooo good! The pita was stuffed with a huge amount of tender, well seasoned meat. There were a few pickles, a bit of salad greens, and a drizzle of garlic sauce. It came with a small side of olives and pickles amd spicy sauce. It was very satisfying in portion and taste. I will definitely return in the future.
The shawarma pita had a very funny smell, kind of like a cleaning product... I’m not very happy about it. Your workers should be changing gloves more often because it seems like they’re cross contaminating. That or please wipe your equipment more efficiently, thanks..
As a middle eastern man, I am a little more critical of middle eastern restaurants than most. Most places Ive been dont seem to feel quite right. Zyara is one of those rare gems that is the exceptions. It reminds of going to my grandmothers house as a kid. The smells of the different foods cooking, the space, the welcoming host. It all lends itself to what the name signifies. Some of the best middle eastern food Ive had in NYC. The tea is amazing. The kibe, shawarma and fatoosh salad are all unreal. The food feels like its literally made with love. Do yourself a favor and come here!
Sad because the food is ok but the person who answers the phone is a pure dummy. He does not let you speak and always ruins the orders because he rushes you off the phone. How can you be sarcastic and you are clueless to the customers needs. Very annoying. They need to train these people before they let them open up business here.
EXCEPTIONAL!! Where do I start?! The food the ambiance gets 5 🌟!! We are already planning our next visit to bring everyone to experience this authentic gem for Ramadaan! Truly a special experience that presents to you the spirit of Iftar during this blessed month. Love love love it, great job!
This rating is based on my most recent visit. The 1st time I went, I was blown away by the food. Very flavorful chicken shawarma prepared by the shorter of the two men. Unfortunately, on my 2nd and 3rd visits, both my meals were prepared by the other gentleman with short hair and my shwarmas were not the same. Each time it came with less and less add ons. On my last visit the chicken was dry and cold that I had two warm it up in the microwave. Sadly I wont be going back.
I was told by my girl theres this new place with excellent reviews and we gave it a try, excellent 1st experience that brought us back for a second. the second time was pretty good still. 3rd visit, sliding down some. this last 4th visit was just garbage, the wrap was not crispy like the 1st two times and the chicken was flat at best. the salad we ordered seemed like it was prepared in bulk and had been around long enough to be soggy aside from the 1/4 of liquid it was sitting in. she felt embarrassed and betrayed by what they gave us. its not cheap but that is never an issue with quality food, this last 4th time was... well, we just arent going to order this anymore. theyre going to open up in some foody bazaar from whatever reputation that was in the past, a typical MO of a business that wants to make money hand over fist based on reputation and not quality. so many places are like this...
Delicious Arabic food. Their Shawerma is probably the best in all of NYC, sorry, definitely the best in the city! They even almost taste as the ones in Jordan. Their Fattoush is the most authentic and delicious one I ever had in this country as well, especially with the Pomegranate Molasses that they add to it. Also, one has to try their Hibiscus iced tea (كركديه) and their Arabic tea. Their Hummus, OMG, thats probably the only place in the US that knows how to truly prepare a Hummus. My quest since 2011 in this great nation has finally come to an end, I tasted a Hummus in its authentic recipe! 😁 Jaime la musique dans ce restaurant aussi. 😛
Im shocked. I came here thinking that this is another Zyara because the original one is in Steinway. The food doesnt taste as good as the ORIGINAL ZYARA IN STEINWAY. The food here tastes like a machine made it. The owner here buys orange juice in the morning and sells it throughout the day where as the original Zyara in Steinway makes food and fresh pressed juices RIGHT AWAY.I was in Manhattan thinking Ill get the same taste but it turns out that the owner of Manhattan stole the name but couldnt manage to steal the recipe. Please dont go here thinking youll get the original taste. Only the Zyaya in Steinway can make you feel like youre eating food made fresh from Jordan.
WOW. Been here twice in 3 nights Bc we were craving the chicken shawarma. Out of this world. Psyched to have a neighborhood middle eastern joint that is always on point. We recommend the chicken shawarma plate, mixed plate and the hummus. Staff is friendly, welcoming and helpful when making decisions. Cant wait to go back!
It was captured on video from the restaurant next door - the kitten from the apartment above fell out the window and landed right in a box behind this restaurant. A restaurant worker saw, went over and kicked the kitten senseless and literally threw it away. The kittens owner is going half out of their mind, searching behind the restaurant. No one knows if it survived and crawled away to die somewhere, if its still alive and gravely injured, or if one of those horrible people finished the job.Cancel this disgusting place, with these disgusting people!
I’m middle eastern myself and I can honestly say this is one of the best spots in the city. The food tastes so authentic it’s unreal. PLUS it’s open really late so it def hits the spot when I need a midnight snack. I highkey recommend it and if you go you HAVE to get the chicken shawarma!!

2022-05-23The chicken shawarma, or chicken gyro or döner, was delicious. I like that they grill the whole world once its ready. Besides its crust is crispy, the whole eating experience was not messy. I liked how it was served. The fries were not the best but they were pretty good. They had outdoor seating so it was nice to sit and eat my food in a relaxed environment.

2021-11-07I visited Lava Shawarma when they opened on Saturday morning. There wasn’t indoor dining and the outdoor seating area had not been set up yet, so I ordered my food to-go. I got the Chicken Shawarma Burger, which was a great portion for the price. The chicken was tender— a bit salty, but not so much that it masked the distinct flavor of the meat.It came with some basic fries (out of the freezer) which were different from the ones in their photos. They were alright as a side. However, I didn’t originally order the fries, so I think the man behind the counter had selected the meal option instead of just the sandwich. He changed the screen too quickly for me to see exactly what I was being charged for, so I would keep an eye on the display as you’re ordering.Nevertheless, the food was pretty tasty and filling, and I might visit again.

2022-02-20This cozy restaurant is amazing! Their lamb plate is stellar and not too heavy while their chicken shawarma lava is tasty. Definitely also try out the baba ganouch and their cinnamon tea.

2022-05-13This was the first dinner I had after moving to NYC! Such a wholesome and filling shawarma sandwich. It comes with fries and they put fries inside the pita packet too. I’ve probably had it 5 times in the past 2 months. A great spot if you want to order in!

2022-05-05Their slogan is best shawarma in town, and they are not lying🔥 This place deserves a 6 star rating on both food and service! I have been struggling to find authentic mediterranean food that tastes good in NYC and i could say i covered the majority around town, this place by far exceeded all to the point where they are now my go to choice and caterers for events🔥Their chicken shawarma plate paired with their rice (i like some fattoush salad alongside this dish) is to die for!!The owner Khalil is also very hospitable and kind, excited for their new location!

2021-07-30On our visit to NYC we were craving falafel and Middle Eastern food on one of our tour days. Wanted something a bit more off the grid hoping it wouldnt be overcrowded. Lava was delicious and exactly what we were craving. The owner was very generous and nice and the food all tasted great as you can see from the photos between the shawarma the kebab, and my wife especially loved the eggplant with the falafel in the wrap. Definitely highly recommend!

2021-06-27Cool people, great food! Tasty and fantastic. The only reason I dont give them 5 stars is because of the time. It took almost more than half an hour to make us a Shawarma! Eventhough it wasnt that busy. I dont know, maybe next time I visit them, Ill change it to 5 stars.

2022-06-09The best lamb burger and fries I had in a long time! Absolutely delicious and packed with flavor. The fries were crispy and top notch. The meat samosa were astonishing. The lamb shawarma plate was very filling and pleasing. The prices are very reasonable. I will definitely go again. 100% recommended

2021-06-15Shawarma done right! The chicken shawarma lava was amazing! Perfectly grilled and loaded with meat. A tad bit on the salty side but still delicious. Along with a side of what I believe was garlic yogurt sauce. The fries were also amazing! Crispy and hot. Definitely worth checking out for a great halal food option!
