This place is wonderful! Nuno is the best host ever. The bolinhos de bacalhau were perfect — the right balance between cod fish and potato. The presentation of the Portuguese chorizo is beautiful. And the arroz de mariscos is to die for — the sauce has all the right spices, including saffron and just enough kick to make you want more. Last but not least the pastel de nata (served warm!) is as good as the best I have eaten in Portugal. Oh, they also have a great selection of Portuguese wine. This is a great find and I will definitely come back.
I love the place. This is a top notch restaurant/bar in the west village. We really made a good choice going there. The food was so good, the drinks amazing and the service was great. The staff were very friendly. They seemed to know all the customers. They were calling them by their name. Good food, great drinks and nice staff. Honestly we couldn’t ask for any more. We will definitely be back soon!
Went there with a party of 8. They served 6 of us while the other two people’s orders arrived well after the first 6 people had *finished* eating. We were not given a heads up of the time difference these dishes would take—when asked about it, the waiter merely said it was still coming. Service is good and well-intentioned but maybe they don’t know how to communicate these type of relevant information. Quality of food is good but a little overpriced.
Leitao serves traditional Portuguese dishes with a extra blast of flavor that makes it even better than having it back home. This place is a must try if you’re in the area. There’s great Portuguese wine and beer to enjoy with the food and the team running this place makes you want to keep coming back!
My fiancé and I wandered over here after looking for a great place to get dinner when we were done with our evening at Little Island a few weeks ago.We got to Leitao and were seated inside by the window. Apparently the kitchen was closing and, since the restaurant was short-staffed, our orders weren’t taken before that occurred (despite being seated before the kitchen closed). However, the owner was very kind and made sure that we got to eat a meal, and I am so, so appreciative of his effort to make the situation right.I got the Sandes de Polvo (grilled octopus) and my fiancé got Prego no Pao. Both were excellent, and I would certainly recommend giving them a visit!
Excellent Portuguese food, very sensibly priced wine list, buzzy, with warm and accommodating staff. Only small downsides were that they were out of a number of dishes on our visit, and theyd benefit from some Madeira on the menu (though I appreciate I seem to be in the minority who drink it), but these were trifling in light of how enjoyable a time it was; the dishes we received instead were fantastic, and their Tawny port still a great showcase of Portuguese fortified wines.Well certainly be back!
Leitao has delicious food and generous portions! The staff is also very friendly and warm. We had an issue with our food taking a long time (Friday night busy-ness, plus one of the kitchens ovens broke that night, then they sent half our apps to the wrong table). But the owner/manager was extremely apologetic/nice about it, and he took care of us to make things right. Bad luck/hectic day, I get it, it happens -- I would definitely give them another shot and come back!
Reservation for 13 people which they hit out of the park (outdoor seating). The service was great and friendly. Everyone in our party loved the food. The piri piri chicken will change your life (🔥). Highly recommended. Honestly my group is loud they did a great job to accommodate.
This was a complete disaster. We were seated fairly quickly but waited for 13 min at our table and no one came by to take drink orders or anything, or even looked at our table- which was in the front window of the restaurant. So we left. And I doubt anyone even noticed. Does this restaurant have a host? At least 15 people came in while we waited and were left wondering what was going on.
Leitao is a fantastic restaurant. The food is delicious and portions are generous. My favorite are the peri peri chicken and the francesinha. The service here is fantastic as well - the manager and wait staff are kind and show passion for what they do. When we had one small issue with our order, they made it a point to fix it right away. I’ll be back here for sure.Thank you for a great experience!
Really great ambiance. The staff was super great. Both the chicken and the fish was a little bland but I saw other things being brought out that looked better. The wine list was a total rip off. The rose is really a cheap red wine with 11% alcohol which they sell as this super organic invention when in reality it is a $12 bottle of wine which they are charging $70 for. The actual translation on the bottle says red wine. That part sucked but I think I just ordered wrong.
Sadly we have become cynical New Yorkers about the local restaurants. However, we have just discovered a gem in the west village. The food is creative, delicious and soulful. The atmosphere is friendly and warm. We had the best meal we have had in NYC in months. We ordered the sausage and the arroz de mariscos, and both were absolutely delicious. We live in the UWS and the food in our neighborhood has become boring (and tasteless)! The trip to the west village is worth the time and energy (and the price of a Citibike). We know we will be back!Thank God (and Nuno) good food still exists in Manhattan! Our cynicism shank a bit today!
Great place, took my wife for her birthday. She is Portuguese and has been trying to find a place to take her parents. The gentleman named Nuno I believe was great and very attentive,he made sure the staff was helpful with all the diners.I had the clams with chorizo which was excellent and the broth was amazing. She had the garlic shrimp which she enjoyed. We had Piri Piri chicken which was good and she truly enjoyed the Cod with chips. We will definitely be back with her parents.
Popped by for drinks and ended up staying for dinner. The wait staff were all Portuguese and were very hospitable, even giving us complimentary tawny port after our meal. We ordered the Bolinhos de Bacalhau (cod croquettes), Salad de Polvo (octopus salad) and Caracois (escargot), all of which were delicious.
Overall decent place. The food was authentic, but was a little limited and excluded many popular and regular dishes. Severely lacking in Portuguese drinks (all they had was Super Bock).I still give it 4 stars because the food was delicious and the waiters/staff were very friendly and inviting.
Amazing food! This is an amazing Portuguese no freels place to eat. For starters, we had the bolinho de bacalhau, amazing cod fish dumplings. The cabrito (lamb), the francesinha (french inspired sandwich - much like Portuguese croque monsier) and the arroz de marisco (risoto like sea food dish) are the high point of the food experience. For drinks, there is an extensive Portuguese drinks menu, but Porto Tonic is the best one! For dessert, the pastel de nata is amazing, you cant go wrong. If you pair them with Porto wine, then you get yourself all the way to Portugal. I went there for the food, but I was surprised to see a real club like feel on the way out. Young people talking and having fun while drinking and eating decent stuff was a must. You wont regret coming here
Last Sunday my daughter was visiting New York from Penn State, Harrisburg and she was so excited that she found a Portuguese restaurant near by! She and her friend went and had a Francesinha, they liked, yet the service was very disappointing!!! After they brought the food to the table, the waiter never returned to the table again! She had to call someone to give her the bill!!!
Everything was amazing! The food & drinks were delicious. We started with the clam appetizer, which was flavorful and delicious. Our server recommended Chicken Piri Piri and 2 of us got it. It was delicious. The chicken was so juicy and the sauce was flavorful with a little kick to it. We finished with pasteis de nata which was freshly baked, mmmmmm. I plan on returning.
Exceptional spot in NY! We did not have reservations, but we called ahead and they were able to accommodate us! Andy, our server, was great! Very knowledgeable about the menu. Nuno was friendly and welcoming. Cocktails were very tasty! The food was incredible! We will be back for more!Julia, Oscar, Fernando, & Fatima
I absolutely love this place. Delicious food. Wonderful staff. Wide variety of drinks – from well-crafted cocktails to ports and tons of beer options. Just a great vibe all around as well. For seafood lovers, the clam appetizer is a must. The lamb burger is also a standout. But really you can’t go wrong with this menu. Always worth the wait. 💯
Finally authentic quality Portuguese food!! The service was great, really enjoyed their outdoor seating area, and the food was deliciously satisfying! The Pasteis de Natas here were by far the best Ive had in NYC and just as good as the ones Ive had all around Portugal as well!
Outdoor dining experience: I was pleasantly surprised by the warm and pleasant outdoor dining area. Theres lots of heaters and piped in music to make it quite comfortable. It got so warm, that we even had to request a few heaters to be turned off, which they nicely accommodated. The food and drinks were good -- standard WV pricing, which is on the pricier side. We shared many plates, which seems like the best thing to do for a group. It did take a while to receive our food, but understandable given how crowded it was. Oh, and get the pastéis de natas (custard tarts)! FYI: you can make a reservations specifically for the outdoor space, but it requires a refundable deposit.
Super loud painful music (Apple Watch measured it at 103 decibels - which is equivalent to a jet aircraft flying 100 ft above you) and cramped during their evening bar service. Design was cool though and I’d be interested in seeing what this place is like for a dinner service given some of the other reviews about their food.
Best beer bar in the village and the guys that run this place are seriously pro and super nice. This place has been through a lot of changes through the years for better and for worse, this may be its finest incarnation yet. Wasnt sure about Portuguese food when they first took over but everything on the menu is delicious and interesting. I highly recommend this place if you want a great craft beer selection, good food and friendly service.
This place is top notch. From the service to the food, everything was amazing. Despite having to wait a long time for a table (not their fault at all), they made sure we were taken care of and served quickly. Love this place and with for sure be back on a frequent basis
I grew up in Louisiana (the place where everyone says Oh, Ive always wanted to try the food from there, I hear its amazing), and I honestly dont know if Ive ever had food THIS flavorful. Its simply SPECTACULAR! Its spicy, but no so much to be *just* spicy. Its the ideal amount to add great flavor to a dish without overpowering the main flavor, and not to mention everything is cooked to perfection. I ordered the chicken piri and that chicken was the juiciest meat Ive had in my entire life. Im writing this review a few weeks after I ate there, and I still think about that meal at least every couple days.Im not even a big fan of clams, but when the chef, Nuno, brought us out a bowl of the Ameijoas em Caldeirada, my brother and I ate every drop we could and then took the rest home because we were not about to waste ANY of this exquisite cooking. And if the cooking werent good enough reason alone (and trust me, it is), Nuno himself was often conversing with tables and greeted several people by name. I wouldve happily eaten here with someone yelling at me the entire time, but the friendliness just takes it a step beyond anywhere Ive ever eaten. If you live in NYC and this isnt on your list of frequented restaurants, youre missing out BIG time.
Great craft beer selection on a rotating basis with good coverage of different beer styles (have you noticed recently a lot of places dont have stouts or porters, whats the deal with that?). Nice to see some thought put into the selection, there are some good IPA and Lager choices, but some others as well. And always a few farmhouse styles. The food here is a bit upscale pub grub and the service is usually very good (I havent had any bad experiences). Friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable.
I visited Porto in Nov 19 and I have been thinking about its amazing food and people evsr since. This restaurant satisfies my desire for great portuguese food and the even better people.Truly a gem of a restaurant.I had the Francesinha which was somehow better then the one I had in Porto and the clams were so good we needed double bread for the sauce. And the pasties de nata were somehow THE BEST PART. So freaking good. I visited a week ago and Im already planning to come back.
I dont usually leave reviews, but this place really deserves five stars and some good words... How does a place survive under covid restrictions? Do exactly as Upright. Excellent and very friendly service, beyond delicious Portuguese dishes - octopus, chicken Piri Piri, Arroz de Marisco (like a paella)...meatballs, great sandwiches, and the beer selection is wide and good. *(Was really happy one time when two different staff who knew I like dark lagers were eager to tell me about their new acquisition.) And then theres the atmosphere. Its outside and they did it right. Well-heated even though still almost open air, a good number of tables, great clientele... I always leave there with a big smile.
Great place with friendly staff. We usually swap a beer so we can try different brews and I thought they gave us the wrong beer after the swap. I asked if I was drinking what we ordered and they just handed us the correct one without being difficult about us already drinking over half of the wrong one. The beer selection is great too.
Amazing spot in the West Village! I’m a regular because the food is delicious and the vibe is spot on for weekend or weeknight dinner and drinks. They have a great COVID set up and super warm outdoor tables. The owner is amazing, so accommodating and such a cool guy!Definitely order the chicken, octopus, Francesinha (meat sandwich), and nata (custard tart) for dessert. So delicious!A total must try. Do yourself a favor and stop by!
I visited Upright Brew House on a Tuesday with a couple of friends based on another friends recommendation. Place was fairly busy considering it was a Tuesday and the bar is relatively new. They have a full beer list and the bartenders were knowledgeable on what they were selling. The decor was really refreshing, simple and clean and the food was great overall. Pricing was reasonable as well. Would definitely go back there.
This place had a great happy hour and craft beer selection. They have pretty obscure beers that Ive never even heard of. Their happy hour is until 7pm. You can get $2 off drafts and wine so its like $6-$7 for a beer. Also, they have $5 appetizers during happy hour as well. I recommend the half dozen wings for $5. Theyre actually pretty large and come with celery/carrot sticks. Its a good deal.
Attended Happy Hour on a Sunday, which is daily from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and includes $2 off drinks and appetizers. Has an excellent and wide-ranging beer selection, but also a decent amount of wines and bottles. We ate the Nachos, Pickles, Burger, and BLT. Basically good bar food, and a nice place to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Great spot for a date night for craft beer lovers. If that makes any sense. It has great, clean, slightly romantic ambiance, as well as a very crafty beer selection. So go for a date, or just hang at the bar for after-work drinks. If youre new to craft beer, the staff is quick with suggestions and tastes.
I came in for post-dinner drinks and had some craft beers. The price for the beers are reasonable, averaging at $8. The venue is cozy and comfortable. The bartender (Julian) was very friendly. The crowd was not douchey. Definitely a nice place in the West Village to just relax for a few brews.
This is by far the best portuguese place in the area! everything is delicious and authentic, and all the dishes are hand-picked, perfected favorites of portuguese cuisine. a hidden gem that is sure to be not so hidden anymore! recommend the francesinha, the best you can get outside porto
For some reason this place has been checked out twice by my friends and me in a matter of 10 days. The bar/restaurant is great for those casual nights out and you want good beer, decent wine selection, a little more than bar food and coffee drinks. Yes, it sounds like a tall order, but Upright Brew perfectly fits the bill. We came here on Halloween night (a Thursday) and it was loud yet festive. Our last visit here was on a Saturday night and again it was perfect. Lots of people going in and out of this place as well a great draft selection to keep us all happy. The folks working here are friendly and service may be slow at times, but they’re more than willing to make up for any disappointments. PS – I’m a huge fan of any place that serves up truffle popcorn!
Not a huge beer fan, so Im judging on the atmosphere and vibe, which for a low-key Friday night was pretty good. Steady crowd and not too packed (we got there at 9:30 and snagged the last open seat at the bar). Casual bar food is simple but good. Wine - not so good, but whos going there for that.
Unique bar / restaurant along Hudson Street in the West Village that offers good coffee (although is not open in the morning), solid beers on tap (but many more craft beers in can / bottle), and a pretty good food selection (mostly bar food, but good bar food). The space is pretty narrow with most seating at the bar itself and then some small tables in the back. Also a few tables outside which are nice in the summer months.
Excellent spot for craft beer and bar food. Bartenders are very knowledgeable about beer and the beer list is excellent. No problem to sit at the bar at prime time on a Saturday night, which is really a shame. Leave The Spotted Pig to the tourists and scenesters and come here instead!
My husband and I went to Upright leitao on a big NYC adventure! We first went to the Whitney Museum, then to another restaraunt for lunch. We topped off our afternoon by going to Upright Leitao to have a cocktail, enjoy delicious little neck clams and eat the INCREDIBLE Francesinha. The service was spectacular, the waiter even explained the history of the francesinha. Overall a must visit when you are in nyc!
Worst attitude and service in the Village. There’s not host to indicate whether tables are for dinner or drinks. We were asked to leave our table to “diners” though there was no one waiting to seat. Total disorganization. Horrible attitude. What killed us is that we were looking for a easy going cozy bar to celebrate a reunion, so we were ready to consume a lot of beers. Too bad losing potential and loyal clients out of pettiness.
Upright is a great little unpretentious coffee shop and craft beer bar. The beer selection is awesome and features some little known delicacies from the area and is always rotating. They tend to be on the heavier, high IBU side with many IPAs, but the selection is large enough to find something for any palate. The service was also pretty good and mostly out of the way. Great new addition to the area which is more cocktail heavy.
This is my new favourite, hidden gem of a bar-and-coffee-shop in the West Village. Its not too busy yet because not too many people know about it... great selection of beer on tap, pinball machines in the basement, and very friendly staff! And the coffee during the day is delicious.
I wasnt aware that there was such a great beer bar in the area until I went with a coworker. The selection is pretty awesome and prices arent bad either. We went around 10 on a Friday and the place had a decent size crowd. I would definitely recommend it for a date or a couple pints with a friend.
The equation for the most perfect hipster bar. Amazing espresso brewed in the morning and a great selection of craft beer the rest of the day. It can get very crowded and loud on some nights, but the perfect respite is the little known (small) basement containing 4 pinball machines. Have never eaten here, but have heard good things.
The worst customer experience! Waiter was extremely rude and unprofessional! I went there with my girlfriend and asked for a lager beer. He brought can beer, when I said Im not gonna drink this and I want a draft beer the guy said that he doesnt have and if i wanted a draft beer I shouldve said. I guess its not a rocket science that I dont want to drink a can beer when Im going to pub. I think that when you call your place a Brew House you should be more professional and have a respect for your customers.
Met Nuno and had his amazing Francesinha - it was the most amazing sandwich and sauce I’ve ever had in my entire years of living. I’ve been to Portugal and Nuno’s food here in New York tops a majority of the food I had when I was in Portugal. He is an amazing chef with a positive attitude and major love for food. Thank you for everything!
Steak is fantastic and a great deal for $20. I also really really like the salmon. They dont want it to be too expensive, but they only get the highest quality for salmon. Therefore you get a small piece. Chickpea side with the salmon isnt great. Beer selection is on point.
Great spot to hit up in a great neighborhood. Huge selection of bottle beers, and always a really good selection of ones on tap. Fair State Pahlay ‘ahlay, Finback Latte, and TRVE Solid Hex were just a few of those mentioned. Chicken Wings are always a good choice, and a cheese board featuring the local favorite Murray’s NYC is a smart call.
The hanger steak was grilled to perfection. Seasoned just right so it was flavorful and juicy. The accompanying salad was lightly dressed and fresh.Since the weather was accommodating, the table outside was a delightful way to enjoy the meal and the service. Ill be back.
A friendly staff and warm atmosphere make this coffee and beer establishment a great place to unwind, meet friends or kill time.Sporting an eclectic and quality selection or beers, the food menu of burgers, wings, fries and sandwiches pair excellently. And if youre not sure what to drink, definitely ask your bartender and theyll put you on the right path.
Brunchtacular craft beer spot in the west village with outdoor sidewalk seating. The cozy bar vibe inside means great winter eats over a pint. The mild heat lamps extend the sidewalk patio into the colder months. I highly recommend the C.B.L.T. (bacon, lettuce and truffle mayo on a croissaint) with the French fries. Light and delicious, yet filling. The tea is high quality and served at the perfect temperature, but I would have liked a hot water refill. Five stars though (vs four) because the waiter was so sweet to a group with a dog who was allowed to keep their pup with them at the table on the patio. Dog-friendly is always a win in my book.

2022-08-14Walking around in West Village around 10 PM on a Saturday night, we found a few restaurants on the verge of closing. However, determined to find a place we stumbled upon this Portuguese spot. The vibe was very nice- energetic with a hint of mellow. And people seemed to be enjoying themselves a lot. We walked in and were seated immediately for a table for 2.My friend ordered the octopus sandwich and I ordered the chef’s recommendation of rack of lamb. Hesitantly we also ordered drinks, unclear how much we wanted to get hammered and on how much drinking was left in the night. The drinks were Portuguese inspired drinks and were absolutely bomb! But then came the food and the lamb was nothing I’ve ever tasted before! It was incredible. I highly recommend this spot to anyone in the mood to try something different and make it your results spot!

2022-08-15Food was very well executed from appetizer to main dish. Sausage was as good as I had in Porto and the fried cod balls are simply delicious. Service was attentive but not pushy, and they arrange extra for my friend’s birthday after I mentioned it. It was a perfect dinner for both of us.

2022-08-02Wow! What an amazing dinning experience. European vibes starting from the service, which is exceptional, down to the food which is absolutely delicious. Great flavor and did I mention the sauce/broth/gravy?! My god our table was dipping bread in any bowl of food we could get our hands on. Not to mention the stains I brought home on my shirt. That could have been due to the amazing cocktails we had to go with our meal. I would go back and eat there in a heartbeat.

2021-11-28The food is okay. The sausage was delicious, but the rest of it was meh. With all of the food places that NYC has, I would not come back here again. The hosts/owner/waiter were really nice. Gotta give credit where credit is due — the service was wonderful.

2022-08-22Service was inattentive. Long wait for main courses. Food was very greasy. Flavor was alright for peri peri, octopus was nice but overall everything was just too greasy.

2022-05-01The best lamb burger in the city. So good. Friendly staff. Great outdoor setup - very warm even in winter. Large selection of beers.

2022-02-20Been on the hunt for the really good peri-peri chicken in NYC and I think we found a winner! It was delicious, the closest we found to the one we had in Lisbon.Only downside would be the restaurant itself is so dark and the vibe is reflects that.

2022-04-12Best Portuguese food and service in New York! Delicious bolinhos de bacalhau, clams, polvo… loved it! I will come back!!!! Ismael is a great host! AMAZING!!!!
