Lin Zexu-the worlds anti-drug pioneer, Chinas national hero, and a famous anti-drug official from Fuzhou in the Qing Dynasty of China. In 1997, in the same year that Hong Kong returned to the motherland, in order to promote anti-narcotics, the Lin Zexu Foundation of the United States raised funds to erect the first bronze statue of Lin Zexu in the Western world on Qilin Square at the western end of East Broadway. On May 18, 1999, the square was named Lin Zexu Plaza by the New York City Government.
Lin was a patriot who earned international respect for outsiders who called him Commissioner Lin.On June 3, the day Lin confiscated the opium packages, Anti-Smoking Day is celebrated in the Republic of China in Taiwan. Chatham Square in Chinatown, Manhattan has a statue of Lin erected, commemorating his pioneering work in the actual fight against drugs. However, the frontal way in which it fought drug trafficking, weakened its entire structure, but generated the political response of the English and American governments that had great interests in drug trafficking.@wiki
