My husband and I both met at Marist College, so getting married at Locust Grove had always been a dream of mine. From the beginning, Ken, was so great to work with! Covid hit us mid wedding planning, and Ken was always available to answer any questions we had. In the end we ended up going forth with a 50 person wedding and I would not change a single thing. The space was perfect- people had plenty of place to roam around and although we only had 6 tables at dinner, the space felt full and lively the entire night. The grounds are absolutely stunning and we were able to get some really amazing photos. For the brides- I also highly recommend renting Greystone House for your getting ready photos, you will NOT be disappointed. Locust Grove is perfect for the couple who doesnt want a traditional banquet/hotel wedding, still wants that outdoors feel, but wants something a bit more sophisticated than a barn. Also highly recommend Simply Gourmet for Catering and Four Doves Photography (Photo credit)
Beautiful property with wonderful trails and easy to follow/clear trail signs. Lovely views of the Hudson and tree coverage/shade in many spots. Currently (7/2020) they require entry through the information center/shop so that they can keep track of how many people are on the property and masks are required to enter the building.
I was told by many people that I should go to Locust Grove Estate because they have nice open walking trails alongside the tree lined property. So I finally went there and it was wonderful being outside in nature exploring the scenery and autumn colored leaves on the trees. They also offer guided tours of the property and mansion that brings long ago history back to life.Weddings can be booked at the estate which is a really good venue with great photo opportunities. The floral displays are beautiful and photo worthy especially for outdoor gardeners or anyone who enjoys flowers.
A beautiful state , with vevy nice gardens and lawn areas ,it has nice trees in front yard and some wood land on the back yard , it is a big and nice property along the Hudson River with some trails that take you from the hose , along the river and other areas around on the back and around the house, there is a dog cementery close to the house ,in other words it is a very nice place to go and spend a peaceful day ,or meditate ,or just walj around.
I have lived most of my life in the Hudson Valley but only finally explored this gem today. My husband and young daughters brought me to Locust Grove for the Fairy House Hunt as an extension to Mother’s Day festivities. The grounds were beautiful and we were delighted by all the charm and creativity of the fairy houses. It was a wonderful excuse to roam around the property and enjoy the warm weather and sunshine. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The helped me to undo an issue I had when purchasing tickets online and did so with a genuine smile. We are already making plans to return this season with a blanket and a pic I’ve basket full of local goodies to enjoy. Thank you to the staff and to the artists who put so much time, effort, and love into the little fairy houses. My daughters talked about it the whole way home.
The most amazing wedding venue. We absolutely loved having our wedding reception at Locust Grove. The flower gardens were a beautiful spot for photos, and walking around the grounds was a highlight of the day. The facilities are clean, and well maintained. The venue includes use of chairs and tables which made rentals a bit more affordable. Highly recommend booking Locust Grove for your wedding! Kenneth is so friendly and very helpful during the craziness of COVID protocols and such.
Nice view looking down to the river in the distance. Big house, but only open weekends for tours, so we missed out. There is a garden...grounds to walk on. The person in the gift store never greeted us or gave information of any kind and we were the only ones there. It was a nice walk.
Beautiful grounds, nice and knowledge docents and if youre able to tour the house, it is not to be missed! You get access to more than just the main floor. If architecture, views, gardens and/or historic pieces of art/technology are your jam, youll find it all here. The Visitors Center is beautiful and there is a museum dedicated to Samuel Morse with some of his artwork and pieces from the formation of transatlantic communications, so theres something for everyones interests in this gem!
Locust Grove is one of the most beautiful trails to visit in the Hudson Valley. The trails are calming, peaceful, and scenic. You get a beautiful view of the Hudson River. At the Estate, there are assortments of flowers and plants that bloom at different times of the year. People so have weddings and take engagement photos at this place!
Lovely grounds, wonderful gardens with native and non-native plantings. We thoroughly enjoyed the trees, the flowers, the home, the views. Came back two more days, hiked all the trails with my dog. My favorite spot on the Hudson. But. When on the first day we came through the gift shop on the way out and while I was deciding which sun hat and soaps to buy, a male staff member (or consultant for the Estate?) complained to the saleswoman about the flowers in season display out the doorway. Yes, they were a bit wilted and could be refreshed. But he carped on her for the full 10 minutes, repeating with disgust, over and over, Image is everything at a place like this! I offered that my daughter, a gardener, appreciated the display as it was. I was so uncomfortable with this mans loud and angry voice that I left without buying anything. Image is everything! and the image I took away with me was of a thoroughly unpleasant man in some position of authority there who cared nothing for the guest who was right in front of him. I should not have let it get to me, but it ruined the experience for me. Ugh.
Tremendously beautiful..... Very scenic trails and some great overviews of the Hudson River. Very different style trails than the Vanderbilt mansion. Bring athletic shoes and keep your eyes focused on the trail! Lots of roots and rocks! Great trail system that all leads into each other. Good challenges with hills as well. Overall a great day at a great historical place.
We celebrate a wedding 💒 there and the food and music were great. The staff very helpful and professional they took care of our evey need some people had food allergies and the staff made sure to take proper steps to keep everyone safe and happy 😊 I definitely suggest this place
First day house open to public, post shut down. Upstairs is under renovation, so staff floor is given some additional attention. Garden is producing veggies and some flowers. Trail to Hudson a little disappointing. Cant really see much thanks to railroad and tributary. Welcome center has a nice set of exhibits.
We just had our wedding on the grounds and it couldnt have been a more perfect evening. Ken was absolutely outstanding and helpful in every way, ensuring our day went far beyond anything we could have imagined. The galleries are excellent and the grounds are absolutely beautiful. Truly a gem nestled in the rough of Route 9. Definitely worth stopping by.(And thank you again Ken and crew!)Joe & Laura
Went to go and search for fairies and I was not disappointed! There are over 20 fairy houses to track down and it was so much fun looking for them all! It was great to see families out there enjoying the grounds too. So many beautiful flowers and a lovely garden to check out too! Well worth a visit
Gorgeous, historical, relaxing and adventuress! Take a gander at Locust Grove and fall in love with the beautiful landscape, hiking trails, and its very own historical mansion and gift shop! Learn about the gracious families whove lived there and the woman who donated the estate and land to the public, in a private foundation, whom still curates this establishment to this day. Or, become an expert and volunteer your skills and time to assist the foundation in continuing to keep this beautiful place alive and free to us all.To take a tour there is a small fee, however, its well worth it!Locust Grove also offers event rental space for weddings and partys off all kind. If you plan to be married there, you can donate $500 to plant a tree in honor of your ceremony and to help keep the grounds beautiful and natural.A wonderful place to spend the day!
This is one of my favorite places in the Hudson Valley. It is beautiful in all seasons.Right now, the autumn leaves are still falling on the hiking trails. In the winter, the beautiful mansion is decorated for the holidays. The spring and summer bring out the blooms in the exquisite garden. And the gift shop and art gallery always have something interesting!! I wish that I could give Locust Grove more than 5 stars!
Had our wedding at Locust Grove in April of 2018 and it was perfect. The process was very smooth and everything was easy, taking one part of the stress away from our wedding. The grounds were amazing for photos and our guests were able to explore the gardens and trails before the ceremony started. The cherry blossoms were out for our photos so couldnt have been more perfect!
The visitor center and mansion are beautiful to walk in and around, and the trails are well kept and easy enough so as to get a nice work out without staining yourself too much. You cant walk right up to the Hudson, but you can see it and the train tracks from a short distance. They also have their own flower gardens, which are very nice. Its definitely worth a visit and you can spend anywhere from an hour to half a day if you really want.
Locust Grove Estate is a great venue for weddings and other event. The gardens are well maintained and very picturesque. In addition to all of this there are hocking trails that allow you to walk to the Hudson river. There are 8 different trail that you can follow to walk around the grounds.
Wonderful!! Introduction video very informative. Beautiful home and a fantastic guide. Home was owned by Samuel Morse then the Young family. Every item in the home is from the Young family. Furniture, dishes, bedding, collectibles, artwork, etc. They also offer classes, lectures, and more. Volunteers help to maintain the gardens. Excellent gift store.
The main entrance is a museum/ event hall. Go around back to get to the trails. You can bring pets! The trails are gravel so wear comfortable shoes. Some trails get close to the Hudson River so you can get those nice pictures! If you dont want to walk around just find a bench and chill out under the shade or in a garden. My dog loved it there so well def be going back!
This place is beautiful and great views of the Hudson River.Building is spotless and modern. The original house where Morse lives is great to check out. They do a tour and its worth it.They also have a big car show every year and you see a lot of great cars that are not an everyday car show
I started going to the Locust Grove wine tastings the second Tuesday of each month with a friend that has done this before. I went with several other friends, who also enjoy wine. We loved the experience!!!!I must say it was informative, especially with the help of Marta from Martas Vineyard wine shop in Wappingers. She has the perfect personality and expertise to teach us all a little about the wine paired with the food they serve. She makes the experience fun and we walk away a little smarter about our wine choices.I have gone to her shop and will continue because she is someone who you can trust the choice you make will be the right one with her help.
Very nice mansion, best known for being the home of Samuel Morse (of Morse code), done in an ITalia Villa style. We had a very lovely tour guide. We got to see 3 floors, but were not really able to go into most of the rooms and were not allowed in the top of the tower. We stood outside the rooms and peered in. It was not as grand as some of the other mansions in the area, like the Vanderbilt or Rockefeller estates. Children are free (under 15 I believe), which is nice. The gardens are very pretty. If you like historic buildings, it is definitely worth a trip.
The trails are excellent and intersect such that you can easily take a hikes of varying lengths without traversing the same area twice and it is still a short distance to the trailhead from almost any point if you need to suddenly leave for any reason.Easy terrain, great for families with small kids.
Locust Grove (Samuel Morse estate) is well worth a visit. While the museum is small, the house (when it is open) is fascinating and the grounds with rolling hills leading down to the Hudson are well worth exploring on well-designed paths. Also, the visitors center is reservable for weddings and other events.
We had our wedding here in early September and it was gorgeous. Ceremonies can be held in the garden adjacent to the reception hall (a part of the visitors center) - we liked the area with the river view more, but it was too far for our grandparents to walk (and they only allow ceremonies by the garden). The river view area and area around the house itself, however, is fantastic for photos. The reception hall has tables, chairs, bathrooms, parking and a catering kitchen so you need to rent very little, and the terrace is perfect for a cocktail hour (no need for a stuffy receiving line!). The terrace, garden and big doors mean that while the reception hall is indoors, the feeling is of an indoor-outdoor space. Perfect for nights with good weather but serviceable even in bad weather. The hall itself is lovely, with wooden floors, neutral colors (so you can use any colors you want), arts-and-crafts/Japanese style lights and exposed beams. Its much classier and more minimalist than a typical hotel banquet hall.Staff is professional and friendly, and happy to help, and its very conveniently located right next to the Marriott, so your guests can walk back to their rooms. No need for DDs.The only downside is that sometimes you can hear traffic from Rt. 9 or trains going past, but the trains add to the Victorian air of the place. All in all we are so happy we chose this venue!
What a great accidental discovery. The name out front Locust Grove is NOT at all helpful for tourist visiting this most interesting area. They NEED a sign out front saying there is a museum and home of the inventor of Morse Code. It was delightful and very educational, fascinating! There is so little coverage of Morse in the history books, compared to all he contributed to the world. Beautiful grounds and garden and view of the Hudson River. Its a wonderful place just to spend time and enjoy. Very nice gift shop.
I attended a wedding several years ago and will have my daughters Sweet 16 there in two weeks. I have explored some of the front grounds with my daughter n nieces and took some great pics.Keith the Manager is great, he is fun and easy to speak with. I look forward to the party I am hosting I know it will be fantastic!!
Like many of the other brides who had to change their wedding plans due to COVID-19, I am one of the brides who unfortunately had to cancel my wedding at Locust Grove Estate. We were so very excited to have our wedding at Locust Grove! Such beautiful grounds with amazing gardens! It was the perfect spot. We even booked the Greyhouse for our rehearsal dinner. Ken Snodgrass is the event coordinator at LGE and he was absolutely wonderful to work with! Always answered all my questions in a timely and professional way. He was so helpful during our first visit of the venue and we booked right away! Unfortunately, we had to cancel as mentioned above, so I cannot speak to day-of happenings, but I have no doubt that everything would have gone off without a hitch! A coworker of my mother’s actually suggested the venue to us a year ago when she had her wedding here and she raved about it! I highly recommend this venue for anyone looking for a picture perfect wedding! A plus is having both an outdoor ceremony option with an indoor backup option! When COVID-19 disrupted our wedding plans, Ken was extremely understanding and worked with us in this difficult situation.
I went here for the Friends of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District annual Holiday book and media sale. (Weekend before Thanksgiving). They have a wonderful selection of books and DVDs (all gift quality). The grounds of the Morse Estate is very pretty. A nice place to walk around. Theres also an exhibit center and a small museum dedicated to Samuel Morse.
Locust Grove was the most amazing place to have our wedding ceremony and reception. My husband and I fell in love with Locust Grove. We loved using the indoor space and the outdoor space, especially the traditional English garden where our wedding ceremony was held. Our guests enjoyed walking the grounds of Locust Grove! Highly recommend and we could not have imagined a more perfect place to have our wedding ceremony and reception!
THE WORST TRIP EVER!!!!! NEVER EVER GOING THERE AGAIN!!!! My brother and I both went there for a school field trip. Since it was a field trip, we expected the staff to be nicer. They were not. It was boring and we didnt get to go outside until we were walking to the buses.Overall a big disappointment.
This place is dreadful. The wedding started at 5. At eight they finally brought food to the other side of the room. Our side had to wait another half an hour for them to bring dinner. When I asked if we could have some bread, the girl said no.I had to chase someone down to get water glasses filled at our table. No one ever came around to see if we needed any thing. The steak and potato would not have filled an infant. I am a very small petite woman who doesnt eat much... went home starving!! Never again.
We were fearful of inclement weather this Sunday, 10/28/2018. But the weather and forecast prevailed. On this day over 200 women dressed in traditional Qipao (Cheongsam) and sing and dance. Beautiful Chinese song and dance to the Autumn foliage. Once in a lifetime experience
Overlooking the Hudson River, the 200-acre Locust Grove Estate includes an Italianate villa designed in 1851 for artist and inventor Samuel Morse by architect A. J. Davis. It is a wonderful testament to a family who kept this historic home of Samuel Morse intact. In 1895 new owners William and Martha Young redecorated the mansion with a vast collection of art and antiques. Mr. and Mrs. Young’s daughter, Annette, lived at Locust Grove until 1975, preserving the estate essentially as her parents had used it. Today Locust Groves is an independent not-for-profit museum and nature preserve established by Annette Innis Young.

2021-12-11I had the honor and pleasure of being one of the Readers at the Moon Serpent and Bone 3rd Annual Yule Market. Since I AM a fanatic for punctuality, I arrived between 3-3:30PM so that I could take a walk around the grounds. The staff and volunteers were genuinely helpful and professional; I felt like a total VIP. Also, I was so happy at how committed everyone was to stopping the spread of covid19. Face masks worn correctly snd constantly, hand sanitizers, even hot water in the bathrooms. The grounds are beautifully maintained and I look forward to returning next year, and exploring the grounds a little more. Oh, and there is so much gorgeous art work in the building, too.

2021-12-17Locust Grove is a beautiful venue for a smaller wedding (100 guests or less). Their reception room is very modern and they include tables, chairs, a kitchen and more for an affordable rate that goes back into their non-profit. I love when their gardens are in bloom and they have a great view too!

2021-08-30We had our wedding here and it is the most beautiful spot! We were planning during COVID and it was the perfect venue with both outdoor and spread-out indoor space. It was able to accommodate any issue we might have run into. Its also wheelchair accessible, which was important to us.The grounds and gardens are perfect for photos and an outdoor ceremony. We had the cocktail hour on the covered patio and the reception in the large hall.Ken was so easy to work with throughout the entire process, from first scoping out the venue to the day of the wedding. He was responsive and amenable to anything we needed. We also love that Locust Grove is an open park and we can come back any time we want to enjoy the beautiful grounds, gardens, hiking, and scenery.

2020-10-29How have we missed this gem of a spot in over 6 years of living in the Hudson Valley? Just got to go here for the first time, yesterday, and we absolutely loved it! The welcome/event space is so nice, clean and beautifully kept. The garden has so many gorgeous flowers. The grounds are beautiful and so easily walkable. And, the views of the Hudson are admittedly a little far away from the garden area, but still impressively pretty. Cant wait to go back and go on some of their actual trails. They have an over 200 acre property! 👍🏼

2022-01-15We recently had our wedding at Locust Grove and absolutely love it! The grounds and event space were the perfect setting for our ceremony and reception, and the fall colors and flower gardens were an incredible backdrop. Ken and the team at Locust Grove were also wonderful to work with. They were helpful, informative, and made our decision to have our wedding there easy!

2022-06-16Had our wedding here, everyone was incredibly accommodating and helpful with the event. The night went off flawlessly and the pictures came out spectacular with the sunset after some rain. Very easy to walk next door to the hotel as well.
