I wish i could give this shelter 0 reviews which they deserve , since they dont know how to speak to potential adopters. So my fiance filled a form and the lady called her back asking about the adoption history. So she asked that if she had adopted any pets and my fiance said she had a little bird when she was a kid but she had to give it away to her neighbours ( who happily accepted them) as her grandma was not comfortable around pets ( this was when my fiance was 8) and then the lady said the birds were given away so the application has to be rejected and then my fiance said that we wouldnt adopt a kitten unless everyone in the house agreed and her grandma doesnt stay with them anymore. And then the lady said it still doesn’t change the application. She aggressively said if my fiance knows a local shelter that my fiance should go there and save a life instead. She implied it as if my fiance is going to endanger the kitten, like who the hell does that? And then my fiance was upset , i called the shelter and the lady named (helen) who was the same lady who spoke to my fiance picked up and i spoke calmly to her about the situation and she got worked up and started changing the facts of my fiances conversation. And she started blaiming me of accusing her since she couldnt face my facts and she said the conversation is over and she cut the phone on my face.I am deeply dissappointed with this shelter and the staff, they dont know how to treat people nicely. If they cant treat humans nicely, how will they treat the animals with love. They dont deserve to have a shelter.
Every summer I get so excited to head out to the beach on my days off. The perfect day trip since it takes less than an hour to get there. Last summer I noticed the Kitty Cove when I just so happen to stop for ice cream next door. And I knew when the time came I wanted to adopt from them. Well last week I thought it was the day! I currently own two beautiful healthy male cats. My boyfriend and I decided to check Kitty Cove and fell madly deeply in love with little Tasha. Only 8 weeks old. So sweet, and quickly took a likely to us, purring, playful and literally trying to crawl on us. We new she belonged with us. However, as we started to inquire about the adopting process, it quickly turned into a kitty interrogation. All because we mentioned at time we take the boys on walks, who are both spade and regularly are given the proper flea/tick medications and precautions for going outdoors. And apparently...you’re not supposed to let your cat outdoors... What?! The women started to become hostile with us and decided to lecture on how you’re “not supposed” to let your cats outdoors. We both have had cats for years, personally mine always went back and forth. That was only the tip of the iceberg. As per the application - we filled it out to our best knowledge. As we were giving information about our current cats shots etc.. The question about our residency came up, which is Mount Vernon NY, approximately 50minuntes away. According to this women, she doesn’t adopt her kitten beyond 45 minutes- not even a radius just a random 45 minutes. It took us 50 minutes that morning to get to the beach. So because of a 5 minute difference we can’t adopt the kitten?!! What?!!! As we questioned this “policy” she quickly became bothered that we were even interested in the kitten. That it was at HER discretion as to how far this “radius” was. In short, this kitty cove makes up their rules at their own discretion, and if you do not live around the corner you can’t adopt a cat. So we left. Deeply upset. We didn’t feel right, so we actually went back in and tried to get further information because it literally makes NO sense that we shouldn’t of been able to adopt the kitten, over 5 MINUTES!! She then became very hostile, raising her voice, waving her hands all over, with plenty of side comments from the old peanut gallery saying “it’ll be a 30 minute radius now” “why did you even come here to adopt? Why here, why us”. We went there because we thought it was a great establishment, providing a temporary loving home for these kittens. However it just seems to be that these women are absolute lunatics. Have ZERO customer service skills, and clearly only want to keep the cats for their own pathetic, selfish reasons. My boyfriend and I have been in the customer service industry for many years and I have never felt so belittled, bullied and embarrassed from a place of business. Utterly disappointing. I would not recommend this place and I rarely even write reviews, this.. was a highly disappointing days and little Tasha is probably still there.
I adopted a cat from this organization. I told them my requirements and they chose the cat for me. When I took her home, the director, Helen, objected to my soft sided carrier. I had asked for a social animal, but it turns out that she was not. When I asked to return her, they played games with me for almost three weeks. They clearly did not want the animal back even though they said they would take her. When I finally got fed up and returned her I used a box with air holes. This is what most veterinarians I know use. The director, Helen, went off on me like a lunatic. She was screaming like a banshee and followed me outside to scream at me across the store front to the driveway. She was so out of control that she turned blue! I was told that if you wouldnt put a baby in it, you shouldnt put a cat in it! I explained that I would never put a baby in a cat carrier! They threatened to black ball me from adopting from any shelters in the future!
This was one of the most disturbing experiences that I have had in quite a while. Although the facility is clean & the cats are very clearly taken care of. The director of the facility ~ Helen ~ is doing more harm than good.I arrived to Kitty Cove Friday evening around 6:30 pm to a bustling & happy center. The volunteers that assisted my boyfriend, his sister & I were incredibly kind & hospitable. They knew each kitten by name & gave us a welcoming tour of the facility.I fell in love with a sweet black & white baby named Cookie. This kitten was extremely friendly & loving ~ following me throughout the facility & eventually climbing into my lap for a quick nap.The Friday night volunteers were enthused that we connected with Cookie. They encouraged us to fill out an online application to initiate the adoption process.Saturday morning I submitted the electronic adoption application. I then called the Long Beach Humane Society as to follow up on a potential timeline of the adoption process. I was told by a less than eager volunteer that everything needed to be printed & most likely it will not be processed until the following Tuesday. So~a couple things...I thought it was weird that the process was being held up by a printer when the required application’s submission was in electronic form.I also thought 4 days (Saturday to Tuesday) was a large lag time for adopting a kitten ~ however I gave this woman’s response the benefit of the doubt due to the fact that it was a holiday weekend with Veterans Day on the upcoming Monday.Saturday evening ~ my boyfriend, his sister & I returned to Kitty Cove to follow up in person about adopting Cookie. I wanted to put down a donation as to ensure that Cookie would not vanish & mistakingly be taken home with another family.Unfortunately the night took a turn for the worse upon meeting & conversing with Helen. I would like to amend the word ‘conversing’ with hostile interrogation. All I have to say is that the conversation that was going on between Helen & I was one in which judgment could be so cogently tasted. Her tone, her attitude, her facial expressions, her stance, & the words that spewed out of her mouth ~ resembled whiplash in how they stung & cut. This interaction clearly indicated to me that Helen is a person with a superiority complex put in a position of power ~ justifying her disrespect for communicating with human beings by her overinflated sense of righteousness in her duty to protect the cats of the facility.I respect that she has been put in a position of authority & I do not doubt her intentions about the protecting the cats~ however, I believe that respect amongst human beings comes first & foremost. It was clear she had a personal problem with me. She claimed she wanted to see my references but it was very apparent that she had already made her decision about denying my pursuit of adopting Cookie.I was so turned off by the experience & so physically uncomfortable in the presence of this bully that I left the facility without even saying goodbye to Cookie. In conclusion ~ I agree with the derogatory reviews of this facility referring to the experience as utterly disappointing, belittling, embarrassing & full of contempt. I would not recommend thinking about adopting a kitten from kitty cove until you have met & conversed with Helen from the get-go.If she approves of you ~ based on her own personal prerogative of judgement verbally disguised as ‘pre-req’s’~ then you will be able to even entertain the thought of looking for your potential kitten at kitty cove. However if she does not approve of you ~ you will not be adopting a cat from kitty cove ever ~ period. And note that ~ no sooner as you walk out their door ~ Your whole personhood will be on the chopping block for Helen & her seething girl gang.
What can I say about this place.I would say this place is amazing at least a year ago approximately we had the opportunity to take a kitten from a litter with the mother had never came back we were told that the kitten was six weeks old we name the kitten Emily. But we did notice that the kitten was having a hard time walking and seem to be pretty small for six week old kitten we took the kitten to the vet and I was surprise the vet told us that the kitten was approximately three weeks old unfortunately kitten of this age needs to be fed every 3 to 4 hours. But unfortunately me working my wife working in the kids going to school there was nobody home for at least nine hours a day we knew that the kitten would not survive so we first took to get into North Shore animal league surprise That North shore animal told us that we had to make an appointment and come back next week I knew that the kitten was not going to survive so me desperate I went online and I found a place called Long Island Humane Society Kitty Cove. we took Emily there I explain to the supervisor Helen The difficulty that we were having tried to find a place for Emily knowing our schedule and I will concerned about Emily she happily excepted. We were so happy and excited but at that time we had fallen in love with Emily. After leaving Kitty Cove and getting in to the car I had to go back in to kitty cove With my son we asked if we would have the opportunity to adopt her there was a process which we were happily to go through . After watching her to come up for adoption on their Facebook page the day came when we saw her picture and we raced and filled out an application and thank God we were able to bring her home and of course a little brother named blu also. I want to thank Helen and everybody at Kitty Cove for giving us the opportunity to make our family a little bigger and for taking so much great care of EmilyAKA Heavenly Emily and her brother Blu Bear.
Such a bad/disappointing experience at Kitten Cove in Island Park. Mostly because the woman currently running the place wants to play god. I appreciate that this place takes in homeless cats and does a great service for cats and our communities. And Ive donated money to them before. But the woman currently running the place isnt fit for the job. We wanted to adopt a kitten. I filled out the application online the day before and brought the necessary donation money. But we were treated so badly. They called my references and got the OK for us to adopt. Ive had cats for over 30 years. Ive had brain-damaged cats, blind cats and a three-legged cat. But the woman in charge would not let us take one kitten ($100 suggested donation); she said we had to take two because they were used to being together and they were so young. She said that it might not eat -- as if I would let that happen -- because I work full-time and who would stay with the kitten? (My other cats! My son! My mother!) While we were playing with kittens and trying to decide, another family came in and the same woman showed them a singleton kitten of around the same age (she did not show us this cat first). This family hadnt had a cat for more than a month before, werent sure if their landlord was going to let them have a cat (they had to give up one once before) and had many more strikes against them (including that they were home less often than I was -- the parents worked odd shifts; they even asked how often they needed to bathe the cat), but she gave them a list of supplies to buy and was going to let them adopt that one and not let us. I talked to the woman in charge for a long time and she was a word I wont say. She even walked out of the room on me. She honestly just wanted $200 from us. I cant have 5 cats right now (I have three at home). It was a special gift for my son to get the one. I wont go back. Im sorry to have to say this.
My husband and I adopted two kittens here and could not be happier about our experience. At first we answered a lot of questions around our work schedules, but in return I also had many questions about how the place ran and the procedures. I honestly wasn’t sure at first about adopting a kitten from here but we were graciously invited back to visit the cats we were considering adopting to see them again and play with them away from other cats a few times. This really helped us decide which cat was right for us as well as getting to know the people who volunteer at the kitty cove. Also, the people here truly care about the welfare of the cats. We had to provide proof our coop development accepted cats. Now this may be a nusense to some but this shows they truly care that you can House a cat and keep them furever. They also called my job to ensure I was a responsible working adult. To me this keeps away the crazy cat people who are just out to adopt adopt adopt and don’t take care of the cats in the right way.I also received a text message a week after our adoption to see how the kittens were doing. This blew me away! They cared that much to text me and ask for pictures. To the people with negative reviews, maybe this place wasn’t for you because of your situation etc but they truly care about the cats well being, not how attached you got when visiting etc
Dont even bother with this place if you live more than half an hour away. Apparently they only adopt to people in their immediate vicinity. Gave me some bull about how he wasnt neutered. like my vet would have been incapable of the procedure or even that it would have been too much of a drive for me to take the short trip back into the city to get it done there. No wonder they have so many cats there. They wont let you adopt unless you live right around the block.
I cannot thank these women enough for everything they have done for me they truly do love their cats and will absolutely do anything for them and I truly mean anything and everything. They showed me a level of kindness that I have honestly never experienced before and I am eternally grateful to them. Head over to kitty cove and support this incredible organization in any way you can, you won’t regret it.
I am sharing an email of a bad experience at Kitty Cove.I visited Kitty Cove in Island Park to adopt a 7 year old cat. The screening process is worse than if I was adopting a child and not a pet. They insisted on verifying my income. You also wanted to confirm with my management company that pets were allowed in my building.I explained to you that the management company does not allow pets in the building but they and the board of directors Overlook cats. If you call the management company they would tell you pets were not allowed . Your representative refused to process my application even though Ive lived here for 10 years and have had cats the entire time. Im sorry Cane will spend more time in his cage then is necessary. He would have been loved and cared for very deeply. He would have had a good home. I will be posting a negative review on your website. Good luck with your other older cats. If you treat the rest Of your customers the way you treated me I am sure you will enjoy a long life with your strays. Also I just adopted the most beautiful kitten she is currently in my home and exploring. I did not need to hand over my FBI file to bring her home and I didnt need to go to a kill shelter as your representative suggested. End of email
Horrendous. I cant believe what a psychopath the owner is. I have had numerous cats and dogs my entire life. I always love them like theyre my babies. (because they are)First of all, half of the kittens had severe eye infections. They were so sick, some of them couldnt even open their eyes! This owner, oh my god, she let myself and my boyfriend get attached to a sweet little kitten who wanted his belly rubbed, and when we absolutely fell in love with him, she proceeded to ask us a barrage of questions and when she heard that I had a dog that wasnt spayed (because Im afraid of how invasive the procedure is!) she refused to let me take the kitten and said that no one would ever let us adopt. She was so horrendously rude. Such a witch. And we were not the first people she turned down while we were there! It really seems as though she doesnt want to find these babies good homes. I cant believe it. Those poor animals. They deserve good homes.Im still fuming over how outrageously, condescendingly rude she was.I am not going to subject my poor sweet older pup to a wildly invasive surgery just because a stranger thinks I should.
My family has adopted several cats from Kitty Cove over the years. Many times weve brought my children in just to visit the kittens/cats. Every experience weve had has been a positive one. The volunteers work tirelessly to care for the cats and our adoption process was always pleasant. That being said, the animals Ive previously owned or still had were well cared for .. routine vet visits .. vaccines, spayed/neutered etc. It is a shame that people give a one star review simply because what they felt was best for their animal (not vaccinating .. not spay/neutering etc) does not fit the adoption criteria and therefore they were denied. I am personally very thankful that the caretakers at Kitty Cove take the time to thoroughly investigate potential adopters .. it shows how much they truly care about their cats and what kind of future that cat will experience.
I sent a friendly email to LBHS about one of their postings trying to find out more, since info about age, availability, or health status was not shown. 2 days later I received an email containing only this phrase: No, they are not. Thanks, LBHS, for the one sentence email, the hospitable energy makes me want to return. /s
Loved this place. The cats and kittens are well cared for, and the staff was very friendly. They have requirements for adoption and do not waiver on those requirements. I was asked to produce documentation on my animals that we lost during Sandy so I called the vets and had them send me the information. No problem. The folks there care about placing their kittens and cats in homes where they can be reasonably sure the kitten or animal will be neutered and spayed. I feel badly for those who had a bad experience with Kitty Cive around this issue, but honestly, this requirement is essential to the health and well being of all cats.
This is the most wonderful cat/kitten rescue organization I have ever dealt with. Helen, Sue, Elaine and Theresa, along with all the other volunteers are angels. They work tirelessly and really love each and every pet in their care. I am grateful that they do turn down some applications. Some places have very low standards for applicants. Kitty Cove has high standards and I have seen firsthand the care they give to their rescues. A cat can live a long, comfortable, happy life there, until a well qualified, loving owner comes along. I would give them 6 stars if I could!.
Im so confused by the bad reviews on here... people need to understand that Long Beach humane society works endlessly to save the lives of so many unwanted, abandoned, and abused cats! Theyre goal is to find them a forever home that they feel comfortable putting the cats they have spent time, money, rehabilitating and nurturing. unfortunately if you dont fit the criteria then they simply cannot risk adopting an animal to someone they dont feel is suitable for whatever the reason, understand that theyre intentions are so good and unfortunately so many people return cats and they are trying to avoid these animals suffering any more than they already have! The owner is a wonderful women, as are all her voulenteers. They spend most of theyre free time and money on these cats and thats so amazing so before you criticize realize that there is emense effort on theyre part taking care of these kitties! I adopted my two sweet angels from them in which they saved at the Hempstead kill shelter a little over a year ago, chances are my kitties wouldnt be alive if not for them and theyre foster mom! I went through the same process as everyone else and yes they ask a lot of questions and dont rush to just give you the cats, we spent about two weeks talking with them being interviewed and visiting the cats also providing references. It was well worth the wait and process and I admire the time they take to places these babies in the perfect homes! I couldnt have found a better rescue to adopt from and I will always support them and theyre efforts!!! Also on a side note accusing someone of racism is a very serious accusation and I know for a fact that these are the least racist or judgmental people, I have seen them adopt cats to all different kinds people so I feel thats a very unfair accusation because it is so innacurate!!!!!!
Excellent Medical treatment for my rescues. Better than any veterinarian Ive used in the past. Had 2 males neutered and 1 female spayed. Their outcome miraculous. The healed immediately. Were fixed at 4 months old and running in a day. No problems at all. I highly recommend them!
It is so disheartening to read even one negative review about the Long Beach Humane Society. This incredible non-profit, open-caged rescue center works tirelessly to care for hopeless cats and kittens in an effort to provide them all with loving, forever homes. The shelter relies solely on the help of volunteers; a group of wonderful men and women whose shared goal is to improve the lives of these beautiful, helpless animals. The love and care given to every single cat and kitten rescued from a kill shelter or dangerous homeless situation is special, and therefore, the rigorous and thorough process they use to match kittens with new homes is for the safety of these animals. Adopting a rescue pet is a wonderful way to bring love to one’s home and the people at the Long Beach Humane Society’s Kitty Cove take this great responsibility of placing pets in new forever homes very seriously. Please come and check out their amazing facility. You will be overwhelmed by the safe and loving environment they provide for these wonderful cats and kittens waiting for adoption. I would recommend this rescue to anyone looking for a playful, healthy, and loving pet. The staff is passionate about these animals, helpful, and love what they do. It’s warming to know there are places like the Long Beach Humane Society working on behalf of the furry friends that can’t advocate for themselves. Thank you Kitty Cove for doing everything you do to support these special, special creatures!
I am looking to adopt a kitten, so I went to kitty cove because it was close. The employees are not friendly at all, I was the one to introduce myself and start asking questions. There were some cats in cages and others that were out playing. None of the cats seemed to be interested in people, only in the other cats. When I asked the woman if I could hold a kitten that I was looking to adopt she told me no because it would hiss. A 9 week old kitten hissing at me is not a threat, nor would it get away from me. I am generally concerned about this adoption center and that the cats are not used to people. It does not seem like the employees want them to be adopted. Super disappointed.
Tried adopting a cat, had cats and dogs all of my life. The woman over there, Helen, was very unpleasant to work with. I understand why there are so many cats left there, because she demands perfection for anyone wanting to adopt one of the kittens. Its really sad that someone like that is running a place where when you walk through the door you are hoping to feel welcomed and are hoping to find a new addition to your family.. Really, its a shame. 😓
I am amazed at how well it smells when you are there, how well cared for the kitties & doggies in foster care are taken care of too! It is heart breaking to read the negative reviews; which when reading I noticed they were all denied & angry. But the reasons you write why you were being denied are all for the well being of the furbabies. It is horrible to see people advising to never go there & buy a cat or dog; that means you are wanting/letting animals in kill shelters die! So so sad when these volunteers spear hours of their lives caring & loving for these animals & become attached & want to make sure they are cared for especially after whatever hell they went through before being saved by them! 4 of my 5 kitties I adopted from LBHS (all black & 2 black & white-one of which has a neurological disorder & they cared for them all wondefully)! I cannot say enough great things about this no kill rescue! Can’t wait to be able to adopt doggies from them too! Please I beg you to not go off of negative reviewers & see why this is a magical place for yourself! By the way they are mainly cage free & you feel like you are in a kitty home where they are so social & climbing on cat shelves & condos & have tables & a day bed & chairs. My point is go for yourself & check it out there with an open mind & save a life or two!
Please no one buy a cat form here these people are very judgemental when I went in the place I had to make them talk to me. They told me to send an application, so thats what I did. The next day when I got my phone call I was shocked! They said we did not look like the people who would take care of a cat. Please I advise you these people are embarrising to talk to and please go adopt a kitty somewhere else!
Found a pure breed cat in my yard cornered by my dogs. Called to see what I could do. They told me its an inside outside cat dont bring it here we dont take cats call animal control. This was a call for help and they were so rude it was unreal. I went to another shelter in long beach. They were so nice helpful and looked after this cat. Hopefully they found its owner.
Horrible place, received a hostile attitude when you walk in and makes you want to turn around and leave. The woman who takes care of the cats smokes inside the place is not friendly and very opinionated. She has no consideration of what she says, and does not care if you have children around to hear it. She is also incorrect with the information about laws and kitty care. Avoid this place, there are many others to choose from. I adopted my cat at All About Cats in Freeport, they really love cats and they have wonderful people working there!
This organization must have changed management, because they used to be wonderful, but now they are awful. The woman in charge of adoptions seems to keep changing the criteria of what a person needs in order to adopt a kitten. I have adopted two kittens from this organization when they were in their previous location in Oceanside 7 years ago. I was looking to get another kitten because, after a split up, the cats have stayed together with my ex. They had no record of my previous adoption history, and interrogated me and made it very clear that they did not want me to adopt a cat. I feel very bad for all the kittens that they had, not only because they have made adoption so unpleasant for people, but because the place is not nearly as clean or will run as it was in its previous location in Oceanside.
I dont understand the negative reviews. Yes, they are strict with respect to having their cats adopted, but they dont base it on how you look (previous reviewer). Their cats are well taken care of and they play with them frequently. The ones in cages have not yet received their full vaccinations, which is why they cant be let out to play with the others. As for another review, you cant neuter/spay, until they are of sufficient age. They seem to be doing the best that they can. We have an adoption pending.
Was very unfriendly. One of the workers makes other crazy cat ladies look bad.She wanted us to get a 13 year old dog that we owned neutered. When the dog was rescued from a kill shelter, neutering was not yet popular. Why put and old dog through some major surgery when he is well passed his prime? I would agree otherwise. In all honesty, I think she was fishing for something because she wanted to close earlier than her posted time and needed something to justify her total lack of customer service. This experience almost made me not want to not get a cat from a shelter. Some of the personalities need to get more people to adopt, not discourage it. The more they get adopted, the less that get killed.
I rarely write reviews but after my experience with Helen at Kitty Cove in Island Park I just had to share. I am utterly appalled by the way I was treated by “Helen” at this shelter. While I was driving home from work last night I saw two tiny kittens on the roadside. After pulling over, it was obvious that these little babies were all alone, starving, flea infested, had eye infections and were abandoned. Unfortunately, I was only able to catch one. I immediately drove to the shelter with the one kitten. I was told that they only accept kittens that are at least 2lbs and this one was only 1lb. I would need to find someone to foster the kitten until it was 2lbs (about 2 weeks) and then bring it back. While I was there, I frantically posted on facebook, called family, friends, and friends of friends to find a foster. I was able to find someone who could foster but she couldn’t pick up the kitten until tomorrow. After explaining the situation and making a monetary donation to the shelter they agreed to accept the kitten until my friend could pick it up. The woman at the shelter and the volunteers were very nice and accommodating. But, I couldn’t just leave the other kitten all alone and abandoned – so I went back first thing the next day and thankfully was able to catch the 2nd kitten. I wanted to reunite the siblings and my friend agreed she would foster both baby kittens. She lives over an hour and a half away and would get to the shelter today as soon as she could. When I arrived back at the shelter today, with the 2nd sibling I was greeted (if you can even call it that) by the very rude and apparently miserable, Helen. She immediately complained that the female kitten got out of its cage last night and it was a huge problem that inconvenienced her. She made me feel guilty about rescuing a stray from the side of the road. She did not want to accept the other kitten (remember my friend is coming to get them and foster them). Helen asked me why I couldn’t take the kittens myself and even scoffed and made faces when I explained to her my son is asthmatic and extremely allergic to cats, which is why I couldn’t foster them myself. I assured Helen that I would be back after work to pick up the kittens. In the meantime my friend called the shelter to let them know she would be coming to get the kittens but it would be later, closer to the time they close. Helen called me and asked if I spoke to my friend and was she planning on keeping the kittens. I said I wasn’t sure if she would keep them but if she didn’t, we would find them homes and not bring them back to Kitty Cove because of the way I was treated. Helen became irate, accused me of “using” the shelter for flea and worm medication and told me if I didn’t pick them up by 5pm the kittens were, “HERS”.So after being told they would not accept the kittens and to find a foster, finding a foster, finding the other kitten, going back to the shelter, making a donation, dealing with Helen and her rude and miserable personality, my friend making arrangements for an almost 4 hour excursion to get the kittens (and agreeing to foster them for two weeks) Helen is keeping the kittens? I sure hope she meant the shelter will accept them and not that she is taking them home. It does not appear she has the temperament for fostering, rescuing or being around animals or human beings.
My boyfriend and I decided we wanted to adopt a kitten. We did our research and decided to go to Kitty Cove. Upon arriving the experience was extremely awkward. The volunteers working did not greet us, you had to ask about six times to even hold a kitten. Instead of making nice conversation, they grilled us with questions trying to see if we would be fit owners (mind you I have 2 dogs and have volunteered at countless pet shelters). Regardless we found a kitten that we loved and decided to fill out an application. They told us that within 24 hours they would get back to us...2 days later...nothing. We ended up just going in to ask about the status face to face, and they just said Ok you can take the kitten...$150 you owe, Very odd. We ended up taking the kitten home and she is perfect. We had to bring her back to the Kitty Cove to get spayed, I left her carrier and a blanket with her, when I picked her up the next day, the blanket was gone. When asked where it was I was told it was misplaced. On their Facebook a few days later they were posting pictures of new cats on my blanket.Long story short, its a great that kittens/cats are being saved, but the people who are running this facility are terrible. They do not want the cats to find good homes and they are rude.
I was assaulted by questions when I walked in. Because I was unsure of two questions and wanted to have an honest conversation they were not going to let us adopt. Instead of being upfront with us and telling us that my ambivalence would not allow us to adopt they walked me and my two children around to see more cats and let my children continue to pet the cat we really liked while I filled out an application. I signed my name after agreeing to their policies and then they took money from me all the while knowing that we would not be approved from the first two minutes we were there. I highly respect people who save and care for cats, but they should respect people too.
I recently fostered a female kitten and was left in pieces when I had to return her. I immediately wanted to adopt a female kitten to try and mend my shattered heart. I searched the internet like a crazy cat lady would and found Long Beach Humane Society. I called and was told I needed to fill out an application online, which I did......I received a call 3 days after stating that I needed to send my dogs medical records stating that he was neutered. They then approved me, I was so excited. The staff was welcoming and a bit hesitant at first, but after they saw me with a cat that I wanted and the connection we made, they were thrilled. Peggy is such a loving person, I can see it in the way she treats the innocent little lives around her. I feel better knowing that people like Peggy are present in this world. I can understand why shes the way she is about her little fur babies. All the ladies are amazing. This is a great place if you want to adopt a pet thats well cared for. Peggy even pleaded with me to update her on my little babies progress. She gave me her cell phone number, now that shows commitment. My babys name is Joan and I Love her sooooo much.
Long Beach Humane is an amazing non-profit cage free animal rescue. They help rescue many kittens and cats from kill shelters as well as abandoned kittens on the streets. They are all volunteers that work non-stop to provide the best possible care of these animals and have just started pulling dogs from the kill shelter! Some of these bad reviews seem to be from people who weren’t approved for one reason or another. Long beach humane has strict policies with adoption only to ensure the safety of the animal. Please don’t let that stop you from going in and seeing it for yourself. You truly will be amazed at what they do and can help save the life of a precious little baby :)
Everything the negative posters have said about this place is 100% true. Avoid it at all costs! Hell- just buy a cat from a breeder! They are overrun with kittens and we show up a married, financially stable, stay at home family with two older kids and were turned down. The woman Sue running the place is an absolute nightmare to deal with. As soon as you walk in attitude is given by her. Im not sure who would be able to adopt through this organization. AVOID! AVOID Avoid!!!!Place should probably be sued for discrimination for what everyone else is saying about it too. They definitely profile and judge you upon entering.
The people who run the place smoke infront of both cats and kittens. Me and my partner were spoken to very poorly by the woman who runs the place. We were denied a kitten all because we havent gotten our 9 year old cat his rabies vaccination in a year. We live in an aparment building and our vet told us vaccines are not necessary since he never once went outside. This place should be reported to the department of health, and the owner should be replaced with someone who actually is more family friendly twords people in general. That said, if this place wants to have better reviews, they need to change their behaviour.
I’m trying to adopt for cat for my son graduation gift is so difficult, we need to apply application online before see the cat. Is first time in my life try to help animal for the good home but really difficult.Well I got my cat from Hopkins cat rescue in Freeport is easy and very nice people there and you can just walk In and play with the cat as long as you can.So don’t wasting your time to go this shelter just go the one in Freeport is the best.
Im a cat owner. My cat is treated like my son and I love him more than anything in the world.I picked up a feral a while back, which I had to give up once I moved into an apartment. Apartment living was not for her. She is an outdoor cat and I no longer had a backyard for her. My vet had her records from the times I brought her in to be checked up and vaccinated. When the rep from LBHS called my vet, they gave her the info on both of the cats. She asked me about it and I told them her situation. They rejected me, right then and there. The reason I went through LBHS is because I want a cat which is friendly and suited for apartment living. As an excellent pet parent, its heartbreaking to be rejected.Unless you have an immaculate history, dont bother applying for adoption here. Its not worth getting your hopes up and then have your heart broken when you are rejected for something so trivial and stupid.Feel free to check out my cat sons Instagram! @everdeenthecat
The staff Barbara and Sue were helpful and knew all the cats well, they assisted us in finding a 6 month old that was perfect for my daughters. I completed application and was approved. They gave us a concise list of items we would need, we drove a short way to Pet Supplies Plus where we got a good deal on everything we needed. We drove back to the shelter and took Luna a black and white domestic short hair home. They love the animals and are doing good work. Many thanks to them.
I adopted a cat from this organization in 2004. I still have the cat, Hulo fka Shea, after 13 years and two cross country moves. He is currently 14 years old and still very much active. He has tons of love and very good care from me and my husband.I brought him home after a short interview at the Kitty Cove when they were at the back end of a pet store in Oceanside. He was relatively healthy until I took him home. He came down with THE WORST kennel cough. I called to let the staff know that he was sick when I got him home, and was promptly yelled at on the phone by a volunteer. I had to hang up on her. This is a pretty jarring memory to have from adopting my first ever cat. Granted I kept him and still love him very dearly, Ivevnever had good memories of this rescue. They are nothing like Texas rescues Friends for Life or Austin Animal Center.
Kitty Cove/ Long Beach Humane Society is an open cage rescue for cats, it’s always a difficult job to run one of these places as everyone is always looking to dump animals. They do the best they can and I would compare them to any top facility that adopts out animals. We adopted a kitten named jasmine who was abused and brought to kitty cove to find a better life. Well she basically hit the lottery. I would highly recommend this adoption agency.
I adopted a 5.5 yr old dog, Tucker, this past weekend. I live in Port Townsend and only met Tucker via his on-line profile., so I had never been to the facility. I and my friend were so impressed. The staff and directorwere wonderful, so friendly and caring. It was super clean and the entryarea smelled fresh. The cat rooms were so inviting. All the cats were plump, well groomed and contented. Tucker himself is an utter DELIGHT.I am smiling as I am typing.
Very abusive during “interrogation” following adoption application. Asks for inappropriate sensitive information such as DOB. I spoke with Helen, a sadistic person with a personality disorder. Very nasty. Will not ever donate again. Please read many similar reviews of this place by people who were also abused, all over the internet.
Wow the older woman with short brown hair was completely nasty and rude. I went in with 3 children who were excited but definitely being gentle. I was watching and taking pictures. One of the cats scratched my girl and she started yelling at me. Excuse me lady but sometimes cats play and scratch, my kids were gentle. Someone has an ego for the humanitarian work she does. But who does she think she is smoking around those animals. Disgusting human. We cat tailed it right out of there!
Island Park Humane society is a fraud and the woman Helen is the person in charge. I am reporting her , i have a newborn kitten who has a deformed foot and half her foot hanging off, bone exposed and an infection in that foot,, when i took newborn to there vet i was screamed at by her for taking antibiotic that was given to me by vet because she said its out of her pocket and if kittens need any care to bring it to her. She refuses to allow me to take it to the vet for a follow up as i was told to do by the vet, now she wants them back because i refuse to neglect the needs of the newborn kitten and i want to follow the vets advise. Helen is not a vet.She said if i dont return them she will have me arrested.
I filled out an application to adopt a kitten...I spoke with a women and told them we were interested in one or possibly two of the kittens from their webpage...the woman had me fill out an application online and checked my credentials and my vet verified that I was a good person responsible and that I took good care of my past animals...The Women told me that we could adopt a single kitten but consider taking a pair... please send a payment of $100 for the single Kitten We were interested in...once they received the payment they would hold the kitten till we could get there to pick him up...I get several phone calls from the same woman now asking for us to purchase a pair and that they dont place single kittens with people...If I had not specifically asked if we could adopt just one from my original conversation I would not be so upset. I had spoken with my wife and we carefully thought about taking a second kitten but decided to just go with one. Then to top it off once the woman found out I lived in Massachusetts and not from New York or to be specific Long Island was told to go else where that I was to far away... I feel this organization should not be able to make up and change rules on the fly and not to be discriminatory of people outside the State of New York...The woman was very rude and inconsiderate and I would not recommend this place to anyone

2022-05-14My fiance and I visited and fell in love with a kitten who had just arrived the day before, and we wanted to adopt her for our resident cat who’s been longing for a companion. We visited twice in the same day, met with two groups of volunteers, and filled out an application in-paper and online. We held the little kitten in our arms, who constantly purred, showed so much love, and seemed like a perfect fit for our resident cat and our family. We were probably the first to apply for her and had the full support of the wonderful volunteers, who hoped with us that we could eventually adopt her.The problems started when the director, Helen, whom we never met in person, called to go over our application. She seemed to fixate on us being in our mid-twenties and seemed to have formed an opinion about us already without having asked many questions. She nitpicked on the fact that we wrote down we lived in an “owned” home, even though the home was technically not under our name, but under my mother’s. And while this was a somewhat valid concern, she proceeded to question us making the conversation essentially like an interrogation. We explained that we’ve taken care of our 3 year old cat since she was abandoned as a 3 month old kitten, and that we checked off “owned” home to mean that our landlord, aka my mother, was fine with us getting another kitten. She snidely told us that the difference matters. Helen, having already formed her opinion, proceeded to end the conversation and say that she “still needed to look everything over” and will get back to us.We were pretty determined to adopt the kitten we fell in love with, so we kept in constant contact with the shelter. We found out that our current indoor cat was missing one dose of the FVRCP vaccination and so we got her the vaccine within the next 2 days and immediately emailed the proof as well as her 3 years of medical paperwork. However, our emails went unanswered and Helen was never available via phone.About a week went by and I was finally able to reach Helen, who promptly said that the kitten was “already due to be adopted out.” She then curtly said other cats were available, but as you can imagine, we were devastated. It was then I went on Google Reviews and saw the slew of other reviews here that I saw that this was a recurring issue. We understand the need for strict screening to ensure adopters are qualified and understand the responsibility of bringing in another pet, as well as to ensure shelter animals aren’t returned, but the whole process left us with such a bad feeling. We understand that us having to update our cat’s vaccinations probably put us further down the line of adopters, but we firmly believe the cards were already unfairly stacked against us due to misconceptions about us.Please, by all means visit the Humane Society and consider adopting from them. We just wanted to warn future adopters about the interrogation process with her. It just hurt us that we were falsely judged in the first place, intensely interrogated about whether we could provide a safe and loving home, and that the kitten we fell in love with ultimately couldn’t be ours. We ended up adopting another cat from Posh Pets and not only was the process so streamlined for them, it has been a month and we still have constant contact with the director and assigned counselor for updates/questions and are constantly reminded of how much they support us and care about flourishing our relationship with our adopted cat. With all this being said, the cats at the Humane Society are clearly well taken care of. The cats seemed very happy, everything was clean and there was ample space for the cats to run around. The volunteers we met were all very professional, friendly, welcoming, and kind. It is very clear they love volunteering and truly care and know each cat.

2021-01-19I applied to adopt a kitten and less than a week later was approved, which was great given that it was during the pandemic and approval wait times have generally increased at rescues. I had originally applied for a pre-adoption kitten, but in the waiting time found a little boy I was interested in. I was able to speak to his foster and meet him a couple days later.I do wish there was space to let him down and see how he interacted with me and my mom instead of just holding him, but regardless I fell in love! I couldn’t take him home that day because the foster wanted to follow his diarrhea, which I appreciated being that I have another kitten at home already. After finally taking him home a few days later, the foster was amazing in answering any questions I had and checking in on us. I also took him back a few times for his vaccines that was so simple to do.If I was to adopt again, Kitty Cove is my go to rescue!!Pictures of my spoiled little boy :)

2021-12-15We called looking for help finding an adoptive family for a cat that belonged to a recently deceased family member. The lady was so unbelievably rude and said no they don’t take in cats because it’s inhumane and cruel and that we should post on Facebook and find a family ourselves. After explaining we are from Indiana and don’t know anybody in Long Island who would even see it she tried to shame us for not taking the cat home with us even though we literally cannot because of our other pets. Made my wife cry because she already feels terrible about having to re-home her aunts cat. Just absolutely disgusting, mean behavior and a horrible way to treat people.

2021-07-21The second my mom and I walked in there one of the volunteers greeted us with “What are you doing here?” obviously annoyed and it was very off putting. We felt very unwelcomed and only stayed because they then explained they were the only one working which was “ridiculous.” I don’t blame them but it was very unprofessional and another volunteer came in soon after. The second volunteer was very warm and reassuring (Maryann I think). She wanted to help us find the right cat for us and made the adoption process seem like a breeze. It wasn’t until the boss came in and questioned us based off our application. We explained we never had a cat but we have had two house dogs and have a lot of friends with cats. We listed them as references as they have already adopted from Kitty Cove. The boss asked us if our dogs were neutered and we were honest because why wouldn’t we be? We said only one was fixed, but the one who was not lived a full, healthy life of 15 and a half years. Well that was the end of it. She shook her head in disapproval and said “this might be a problem.” She gave us a whole shpeel explaining the risks of not fixing your pet which was educational for us, but did it in a way that was very judgmental. And our dog was precious to us we only lost him a few months ago so her tone was not appreciated. She said we needed papers to prove our fixed dog was neutered, and when we told her we may have lost them in Sandy she said to call the doctor we used and ask for copies. We would be going back 10+ years.Isn’t fixing your pet a personal decision? And why should it even matter if their policy states you must agree to get your cat fixed in order to adopt!! We had no objection!Anyway, we had to leave right after, and they told us we would hear whether our application would be accepted in a day or two. We never heard back, and we would feel too uncomfortable to ever go back.I guess I’m glad they care so much about the homes their cats go to, but c’mon. Where does crucifying every application get you?

2021-04-30I have adopted several kittens from The Cove. They wonderful. Two of my kittens have special needs, which I knew about before I adopted them. They were so helpful. My deaf kittens foster mother was so helpful and patient that she has become a friend. It isnt easy to adopt as they screen their applicants carefully. This is something I really appreciate. Would recommend highly

2021-04-30I adopted my kitten from LBHS and I couldn’t be happier. The foster took amazing care of the kitten prior to adoption and made sure she was in good health and of a good age before we could take her. Very professional, super friendly & kind and I will be forever grateful for their selflessness, care and dedication they provide for their kitties. Thank you!!!!

2021-04-29I cannot say enough good things about this place. I have been doing rescue for so many years and every time I call and need help this rescue steps ups as best they can. They always stand by their animals and never turn their backs. Not even years down the line.I love that their adoption process is thorough and tough weeding out any possibilities that their Pets arent finding the perfect home.Theyve been doing cat rescue for yrs and yrs and have recently delved into dog rescue. Their efforts are amazing and Ive seen so many wonderful families be completely do to their work.I cannot say enough good things about them. I love this place and all the ppl that work and volunteer there.

2019-12-27My Cousin wanted a cat and he has owned his own home for over 24 years and he is the manager of a famous New York Restaurant and has perfect credit. It was suggested he would be happier with a female cat about 9 months old. They had one. We went to kitty Cove and there were cats everywhere running free. They looked it up and one cat was female and the age bracket. They said they could not find the cat and we filled out and application and it was not ready yet so we could not get the cat that day either way. One of the questions they wanted an answer to was who was his last vet for his last dog who may have been 35 years ago. He had a dog for his kids and since he worked so often he has had no pet and does not remember the vet nor has any idea if the vet is still in business. In the end when we called back they denied his application because he did not remember the name of the vet. When we were at the Cove the ladies were unfriendly and not helpful. Every year that had flea market fundraisers which I attended and contributed to. I will never help this shelter again. They are unfriendly and unreasonable and unhelpful. My cousin retired and 70 and has some physical ailments and a cat would be a great company to him. We went to another shelter where we were treated nicely and he got a cat and they are loving each other. I love animals and I strongly suggest you go elsewhere. Kitty Cove is not a place for humans or animals. I hope it gets shut down and the cats get relocated to a professional caring shelter.

2020-10-16Adopted a kitten from LBHCKC. They seem to really care about the kitten/cat. They were concerned about my baby son being allegeric and Told me if I dont get kitten neutered within 3 months they have the right to take kitten back. The place is a hole in the wall but caring and knowledgeable staff. So many kittens/cats available for adoption why purchase one.
