Worth the trip to Corona to learn about how a great American musician lived his everyday life. Tour is about one hour. Book your tickets online before visiting to ensure that you get a spot. About 7 minute walk from the 7 train. Lots of great places to eat after the tour before you get back on the subway.
Was looking forward to the feel of the holidays at the Louis Armstrong House. Guide seemed unhappy and that made the experience unwelcoming. Have been several times before and was looking to feel some of Pops joy , but that was not apparent today. The house itself is worth a visit.
Visiting Louis house was an amazing experience. Its not some huge celebrity mansion, its a fairly modest family house in a residential street, but every aspect inside was created by the Armstrongs for their comfort and its a place that they obviously loved being. Louis Armstrong was undeniably the most influential musician of the last century and IMHO the greatest musician that this planet has ever produced. He was also a great and generous human being, even casually giving away the trumpet presented to him by the King of England, to a fellow trumpeter who admired it backstage! (that trumpet is now back in the house museum, having been donated by that trumpeters widow). The staff are welcoming and knowledgeable on the subject. This is a very, very special place and I cant wait to visit again when the new visitor centre opens in 2019!
The delight of passing your hands over the same bannister that Mr Armstrong used to steady his ascent and descent within the intimate proportions of his house cannot be underestimated. The fact that he chose to stay in the modest neighbourhood of Corona in Queens, New York was divine inspiration. I recommend this immersive experience of the man and his philosophy with no reservation.
Such a hidden gem! It was nice taking a tour of this beautiful house and taking a look inside the life of the great Louis Armstrong. Our tour guide Brian was very knowledgeable and good at his job. My favorite part of the house was definitely the kitchen and the garden, definitely a must see. It was also great hearing recordings of Louis Armstrong and his wife having conversations around the house.
Absolutely fantastic. One of the best stops on our trip. Our tour guide was a jazz trumpeter himself ( still working in his eighties ) and not only played some for us but also gave the history of cornet versus trumpet. Louiss home was simple on the outside but spectacular on the o side with state of the art appliances cabinets and decorations for that time. If you are going to New York this is a must and well worth your time. We were all very pleasantly surprised and look back as one of the best stops on our jazz trip.
Ever since my jazz-loving husband read about touring the Armstrong House in Queens he has always wanted to visit and so we did during a long road trip to NYC - we very much enjoyed seeing Mr. Armstrongs cozy, modest retreat (a tasteful serene time capsule from mid-century America) and I got some great ideas for using wallpaper! Mrs. Armstrong did a fantastic job selecting furnishings which fit perfectly in the small rooms. The bright blue galley kitchen has a timeless look with its clean lines and sleek surfaces - very inviting to serious cooks. The Armstrongs had what is perhaps one of the earliest staircase seat elevators to reach the 2d floor - disabled visitors should know that this staircase is very narrow and steep (and the vintage elevator is not available for visitors use). Our tour concluded outside in the very well landscaped garden - what a wonderful world! Our tour began with a brief film and explanation of how Louis was surprised by his smart, practical wife into living there - and loving it. After our visit, we went to the boutique where my husband bought a few more of Louis Armstrongs recordings to add to his collection. Very enjoyable and well worth any music-lovers time. Oh, and across the street, is new construction which will eventually house the archives and awards concerning Mr. Armstrongs career.
This is a little gem of a museum. If possible I would have given it 6 stars.I knew Louis Armstrong only from his music but this museum brings him to life in a very personal way. I could write a page long review of the museum but I do not want to spoil the surprise to much.I will say that the house is exactly as it was and you get the feeling that the owners can step back in at any moment. This feeling is enhanced even more by the sound recordings that are being played with recordings of Louis by Louis.Add to that a house which was decorated in a very personal way and you will not be disappointed.I think the people that setup this museum and guides that show you around have and are doing a great job. In 2019 the extension should be ready and you will be able to see even more Louis Armstrong memorabilia.
Just left here with my family and it was such a pleasant experience. Our tour guide, Raphael, was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Louis Armstrong. I was moved by all the stories he told us, things we couldn’t learn from google. I appreciate this museum very much and I would love to return.
I highly recommend this place because not only is it the historic home of Louis Armstrong and his wife Lucille, it’s a tribute to the legend of Jazz. Also, the house is preserved just as it was when the Armstrongs lived in Corona - so you get the feeling that they’ve stepped out to go shopping and have let you into their private quarters while they’re gone. The tours are intimate and guided. Please respect the furniture and objects and don’t touch - but, you can look! I really liked the second floor study where Louis Armstrong’s music collection is stored. Queens College administers the site and is in the process of constructing a humongous Jazz and Music Cultural Center across the street. So when that building is completed the museum will have tripled its capacity and the site will be an additional asset to Queens College’s music program - and the mission to preserve the history of Jazz music.
I went there 3 times and I went to see his grave in Corona cemetery.I love it. louis Armstrong next to Elvis Presley is my favorite musican. He was wonderful person not just musican. My first album was louis Armstrong and I still have it.I do love his songs his voice and almost every time I do listening his songs I get the goosebumps. It shold be mandatory class in each college about live and work of LOUIS ARMSTRONG.Thank you Mr.LOUIS for giving me such a wounderful and beautiful moments and expierience during listening your records.Thank you very much.
My daughter and I visited the house recently and learned what a wonderful man Louis Armstrong was. Very unassuming and not at all materialistic. Generous and caring for others. The visit was informative and very well presented. It was a wonderful end to our holiday. Heather Harvey New Zealand.
A beautiful place to celebrate the legacy of Louis Armstrong; the tour was very nice and it was interesting to see how he once lived. I was also lucky to be there the 4th of July, when there is a concert to celebrate his birthday in the yard with a live jazz concert. A must-go for any music fan!
I enjoyed being able to step back in time and listen to the recordings he made of his life & music. There a lovely garden that is adjacent to the museum and I could imagine bringing lunch to picnic there.I also enjoyed the lesson the educator gave to the school group about the sounds of the trumpet and how you play. T
I went here a few years ago before I moved to NYC in June 2013. When I was last here they were planning some renovations/improvements. I thought the house/museum was awesome before the improvements so I am sure it is even better now. I was familiar with Louis Armstrong but my no means an expert so it was fun to see his humble abode and learn more about him. I definitely look forward to getting back here.
I was unaware that Louis Armstrong lived in NYC, and in Corona Queens of all places! Beautiful House and very interesting information on the tour. Some of which was very timely today. I also enjoyed learning about what a music lover Armstrong was (beyond Jazz). I am glad I went!
An extremely valuable gem hidden in Queens that even I didnt know of until a few years ago, despite having driven past it and living a few 7 Train stops away. From the exterior, it looks just like any other home in the neighborhood, but unbeknownst to the unaware, a musical legend once called it home. Inside is 2 floors of everything that represented Louis Armstrong and his family, from his personal recording room, to the large portrait of his wife in the living room. However, despite the many features of this home, there is an essence of coziness and welcoming, as if the Armstrongs are your own neighbors. The tour guide can play authentic recordings of Armstrong throughout the house, which might be a little hard to interpret the words, but no one can doubt the distinct nature of his voice. Highly recommend to anyone, especially history buffs, music fans, and those wanting to play tourist in their own city!
Went over the Memorial Day weekend. It was a dream come true. It is one thing to be a life-long fan of Louis Armstrong. It is another thing to walk where he walked. I highly recommend this place even for the unfamiliar. Only thing to note is that if one has mobility limitations, you may want to ask for an accommodated visit. The old house has two flights of steps, and one may not sit on the furniture. Lastly, great tour guide and gift shop staff.
Time traveling into a world where music had soul and class. The love of Louis and His wife can still be felt in his house. I first went to the home as a young girl and now I take all my friends that visit NYC. A must see for all black people who love and respect Jazz music which was created by African Americans.
While waiting for my Meetup group outside I was approached by 2-3 gentlemen (1 older gentlemen at first, then 2nd with a 3rd hovering in the back). I stated the reason why I was there and I was quite content to stand outside (I like the cold weather). They made me feel like I was a vagrant asking ppl for handouts or something. I decided to leave and take myself to The MET, where I would feel more comfortable and could casually walk around. I wont be visiting again. Not worth the effort. This museum is a residential area and lacks any decent on street parking, better off taking the train or bus. Corona,Queens as a whole is a bit of a dump despite all the houses.
Many know Louis Armstrong as the musician who influenced jazz musicians all over the world. Few know of his incredible intellect and as a diarist who kept notes on everything he did, heard or saw.Because of his wife Lucille, this home was his sanctuary. A haven in aneighborhood that welcomed and protected him. It reflected hertaste and his acceptance of the warmth of their relationship that gave him a space to reflect.RIP Pops. I knew you, I loved you and I will never forget your friendship.A Cat who dug it!

2022-04-22The Louis Armstrong House Museum is an absolute superb museum that celebrates and honors the amazing life and legacy of jazz entertainer, Louis Armstrong. In celebration of Black History, I brought and treated myself and my wife for a guided tour of the Louis Armstrong House Museum in February of 2018.During our tour, both my wife and I learned that the museum was formerly the home of Louise Armstrong and that he resided there along with his wife, Lucille from 1943 until his death in 1971.We were also able to view the many of the home’s rooms, extensive furnishings, memorabilia of the Armstrongs. What my wife and I found most enjoyable were the voice recordings of Louis Armstrong. In these recordings, Armstrong shares his thoughts on his house, his neighborhood and of course, his wonderful music. Both my wife and I highly enjoyed our guided tour definitely recommend for others to visit and tour this wonderful National Historic Landmark!!!

2019-11-15Louis Armstrongs fourth wife Lucille bout this house in Crotona, Queens, and he lived here for the rest of his life. It is now a landmark building, and serves as a museum dedicated to the great musician. You learn a lot about Louis Armstrong here, and you will learn even more when the Louis Armstrong centre across the street opens in 2020. But what is really fascinating with this house is Lucille Armstrongs amazing gift as an interior designer. Also, youll see a more private side of the artist, highly loved by the kids of the neighborhood. A must see for Armstrong fans, but also for people interested in american culture and histoey in general.

2018-11-25Excellent tour, and tour guide very enthusiastic and informative. Very intimate experience to walk thru the home of the Armstrongs, left intact as it is. Insights gained. It frames out an important aspect of the life and music of an American legend.
