I like the atmosphere, but the menu isn’t great. There are few vegetarian options. When the waitress arrived at the table the first thing she said was that the only vegetarian entree wasn’t available. When I expressed disappointment she said I could always eat a salad. It was lame response. There wasn’t anything else, so I had a salad. Time for this restaurant to join the 21st century
I love to come here for drinks, the staff and atmosphere are both amazing. But its frustrating that they have extremely limited vegetarian options, and have no vegetarian mains on their main menu. I really wish they would address this. If they did, we would be there every week. Also bring back the mushroom poutine please!!
A phenomenal new place in the heart of Newburgh. A true ode to New Orleans with as much attention to the decor as there is to their food and cocktails. We heard about it from friends in New Paltz and had to go. The atmosphere is cozy, inviting and the staff knowledgeable and pleasant. There isnt one thing on the menu we wouldnt dig into. The cocktail menu has a wide array of options to cater to everyones tastes. We sincerely wish them much success in this endeavor and look forward to having them join us at our little tiki bar in New Paltz-The Fuchsia Crew-
Awesome PLACE!!!, A great atmosphere (inside and outside), personable and friendly staff, hands on owner ( STERLING IS A GREAT HOST), the food was well presented, delicious, and authentic to their theme!!! Let me not forget to mention the genius CRAFT COCKTAILS!!! A Great addition to the Renaissance of the CITY OF NEWBURGH!!!!
Amazing French inspired dishes served in an upscale dining setting. From the Duck Confit Cassoulet to the apple bengiets everything was executed perfectly and came out delicious. I absolutely appreciated the craft cocktail menu as well, sporting interesting and unique takes on classic favorites. The Rye Quackers was my personal favorite. On my list of favorite spots in Newburgh.
Super cute New Orleans inspired restaurant. Not as many gluten free options as I would like, but I had a delicious salad. Love that the drinks menu has a “hooch free” section. More than the food, the service and the ambiance make this a top-notch addition to Newburgh.
A truly remarkable and delightfully fresh menu for the Hudson Valley. Mama Roux will transport you to the south with a unique collection of dishes, drinks, and ambiance that will leave you wanting to stay all night long and try everything on the menu. Super great energy, vibe and service as well.
It was awesome a little expensive but definitely worth the price the food there was delicious and my server at the bar i say server because I was only at the bar because there was no open tables they were all reserved so I was sitting at the bar met some pretty cool people too even got someones phone number hopefully Ill see them at my church and hopefully ill be able to hang out and jam with them one day but other than that it was definitely a great place with a great atmosphere they probably thought that I wasnt going to get food there or something because when I walked in everyone was looking at me because I had extremely dirty clothes on from work and it was a fancy place and I came there in rags but they served me nun the less and with little judgment hope this helps God bless Jesus loves you
Mama Roux is definitely the friendliest restaurant in Newburgh ... The staff is super sweet and pleasant and very attentive. I went there for the Fried Chicken and was not disappointed ... It was one of the best meals ever 💕 and the surprise apple dessert for my friend (it was her birthday) really made our experience special ... Thank You to our amazing waitress and the sweet hostess 💖
Some of the best fried chicken I’ve had. And I’m from the land of fried chicken (TN). The flavor was there for everything we ordered. The biscuits and collard greens need a little work (too dry and undercooked respectively), but they just opened and I’m sure they will figure it out.The ambiance is the best you’re going to find in Newburgh, maybe the entire Hudson Valley. It’s extremely hard to find a low lit place upstate, especially one with good food and music. That alone should warrant a visit for date night. The service was excellent. Friendly and unpretentious. The portions are slightly above average for fine dining and we left very full. Looking forward to going back soon. This is your best option for a nice dinner if you’re anywhere near Newburgh or Beacon.
So disappointing and surprisingly bad food.. reheated cold fried chicken...(If you cant make it to order why bother?)and ribs too tough to cut or chew. Mushy cold mac n cheese..All entrees were lukewarm to cold. Why are you at the very least, not serving your food on hot plates? That is so basic. The cocktails and the lovely women working the front of the house were amazing, hence the 2 stars..but I would consider getting kitchen staff that cares more about the quality of food they are putting out. I hated leaving this review..but Id love to return after changes are made
My husband and I love to go to Mama for dinner and drinks at the end of the week. The cocktails are always on point and we are never disappointed with the meals. We always start with the crispy brussels but changed it up and went for the beggar’s purse. It was delicious and the presentation was beautiful. We split the ribeye steak and are thrilled to know this is a new staple on the Mama menu. The steak was so well cooked, kept its warmth in temperature and was covered in a delectable demi-glace. We can’t wait to go back and bring my in-laws for a Saturday night dinner! Highly recommend for date nights!
Mama Roux is a gem of Newburgh. So lucky I was able to make a pit stop in this town, and as usual I followed my nose: drove down the main drag to the river then while rolling back up the hill I saw Mama Mama Roux!!!! sounds like people who take their sauces seriously. And they do. Walked in the back fence gate, a talented runner sat me down and Theresa took care of me and my kid while feeding us delicious preparations of finally prepared local ingredients. Eclectic cocktail menu is also not to be missed. The music selection was par excellence: deep cuts from the best r&b artists in the history of mankind. You want a beautiful and tasty , meal make sure you give this place a whirl.
I’ve been several times since their re-opening post-covid and I just keep going back to see what new specials the chef and the bartender have created each time I go. Everything is delicious and executed so well. The menu is aligned with a fresh contemporary take on a French meets American Southern cuisine with amazing specials that made my group of friends declare it their new favorite restaurant in the Mid Hudson Valley. Two of us had the Bronzino special with cooked greens which was cooked perfectly and my friends had the fried chicken which they proclaimed was “to die for”. We each ordered cocktails off the regular cocktail menu which is far more developed than most in the area, and we also tried the cocktail special that night which was a fresh in-season pea martini. Another night they had a fresh plum cocktail with local gin, plum wine and sherry (and likely some other things) which made a magically complex light drink. My other friend was having a series of delicious “hoochless” housemade mocktails that thrilled him to the core with the more advanced flavors than most non-alcoholic drinks.I also went for brunch and had an amazing shrimp and grits with sage butter, and my friend had a delicious salmon carpaccio which was like a deconstructed lox bagel topping!Having been both pre- and post-pandemic I am thrilled with the developments in their new menu and their continued work on always refining new menu items. I always feel at home when I walk in greeted with a warm smile and a “Welcome in!” NOLA style. The staff are working extra hard to re-open in the post-covid times and yet they are always so friendly and knowledgable that they make me feel as though I’ve just sat down in a good friends private dining room. I can’t stop going back for more! Generous thanks to the chef and to the beverage manager!Definitely make a reservation, and try to get a table out on their courtyard patio while the weather is warm!
We were happy to hear that they reopened after being closed for some time. Well you would expect some changes for the better even though it was good in the past.. Wrong! Food was ok but prices are high for what you get. So being known for their fried chicken, we ordered one as our meal. They should be embarrassed for bringing out this 18.00 meal. A wing and a leg with 2 tablespoons of sweet potatoes plus a forkful of coleslaw. If your in the mood for fried chicken..grab a bucket from the Colonel. The 2 stars are for the friendly Wait staff.
Excellent service. Outdoor seating was very inviting & festive. There were a couple of heat lamps.Food was delicious. I had one of the specials which was a duck ravioli of sorts, with all kinds of fun mushrooms over a pumpkin purée.My bf had the vegetable pot pie, which was also quite good. We also I enjoyed a couple well made cocktails. We hope to return very soon.
We have been here a few times and we love the food, they have a small menu which is great because that always allows the chefs to focus on the food and make it perfect! The ambience for the indoor and outdoor seating is so welcoming. One of our most favorite item on the menu is the shaved rib eye sandwich, it never disappoints
Hands down one of the best places to eat in the Hudson Valley. Mama Rouxs menu is thoughtful and absolutely delicious. They nailed the decor and the staff is super professional and friendly. Weve eaten here almost 10 times and never had a disappointment. Their new patio set up feels like a little vacation too - Keep up the great work, Mama Roux!
Dined for the first time last Saturday evening. We reserved a table outside in the garden area. We were sat at a picnic style bench table. The table needs to have a light sanding as there were some minor splinters. It took a while for drinks to be served. The food and drinks were delish. My main complaint was the table and slow service. Coffee was served without cream and dessert without forks. It appeared our server had to many tables and was very busy with the indoor guests. We will give the restuarant another chance with an indoor reservation as the food was delish.
My wife and I enjoyed our dinner with she having fried chicken that she loved. I had the special meatloaf that was also quite good. It was hard talking to each other as we found the place loud. Drinks were very good but took a long time to get. Our server was very bubbley and quite interesting to talk with. She attend to us with no issues, and very good server. We created a reservation in line with Google. Google said we were good to go but the restaurant never receive it. Not a problem we were seated in about 6 min. Host was so helpful in getting us a table. I am sure we will be back, but will call in our reservation.
I stopped in with my wife for Sunday Brunch and we just fell in love with this place! We started off with hand crafted cocktails. She had the Rum dont walk and I had the Midnight Mary both drinks were very good, we enjoyed tasting combinations that were out of the ordinary. Next up was the crabcake appetizer that was delicious. I would like to mention that the food was not flying out of the kitchen. That being said, it made the experience much more enjoyable, we had time to talk and enjoy the wonderful decor. When the food did come out it was hot and fresh, just the way we like it. I had the Mushroom and Goat cheese omelet, my wife had the shrimp and grits. Both very good and highly recommended. Mama Roux is pretty new but it is well worth the trip and judging by the crowd that was there, this place will be one of the top places to eat in Newburgh very soon.
This was one of the best dining experiences Ive had in quite some time. Everything from the drinks to the apps to the entrees was unique and thought out to the last ingredient and detail. I was wowed! We went for brunch and my friend went back with her husband for dinner...and ran into a couple we met during brunch! So people going back multiple times a day really tells you something!
Delicious brunch in Newburgh. The seasoning was spot on in the salad and dressings, the shrimp and grits and sandwich. Very nice to have savory food, especially salad dressings, that are without sugar. The space is beautiful and intimate. We will return with family and hope to get a more knowledgeable and professional server. The only flaw this afternoon.
This was my second time coming to Mama Roux and both times were great. This trip, I went with my friend to enjoy brunch. We had cocktails, chicken & waffles, and beignets. Delicious! Definitely get bacon with your beignets! We sat outside and enjoyed the sunshine. The service was friendly and attentive. Newburgh is very lucky to have such a gem of a restaurant as Mama Roux.
Had brunch on a Saturday morning. Beautiful veranda just outside the restaurant, with lovely canopies to provide shade on a sunny fall day.Plenty of space in between tables, and the staff were all masked.Delicious beignets, and she had the hash brown tort. Coffee was exceptional.
Had reservations. Table wasnt cleaned. Took about 15 minutes to get service. Then another 10 to have drinks served. Wine overpriced. Ordered a shared plate cream cake. Had to wait 10 minutes for silverware & lit our own candle at table as well Good but very tiny portion. Not a huge fan of menu as there wasnt much of a choice. Saw some plates & portions seemed small. Shared our plate and left..
I have lived in The Hudson Valley for over 40 years. One of the best if not the best meal I have had. The creativity that was evident on the part of the chef was exceptional. The pairing of foods....Pork belly/scallops/ home made brittle. Everything perfectly prepared. Service was delightful as well. Exciting to see this level of culinary imagination right here in Newburgh. Bravo.
This afternoon we tried a new restaurant in Newburgh, Mama Roux. I had read about its opening a few days ago and looked forward to trying it and having a cajun style restaurant in the area.It is located on a corner in the lower end of Newburgh, a location that a few years ago I never envisioned going for a Sunday brunch. The restaurant is in an old storefront on Main Street and was completely remodeled very nicely with a lot of thought and attention to detail (though the bathroom locksets are not code-compliant, hopefully Newburgh Bldg dept doesn’t read through reviews). It is very clean, laid out well and we thought very comfortable. There is a long bar that you come to just for drinks or eat at and tables elsewhere throughout the restaurant.Just after being seated we noted that the front table in the front window corner was vacant. We had not been served anything yet, so we asked to move. There was nothing wrong with where we were but the seat by the window was great. The staff was extremely accommodating, understood our reasoning and cheerfully assisted in the transfer. We were glad we did; it was enjoyable eating and watching Newburgh go by.We ordered two of the same mixed drinks, I forgot the name; Root Beer and Whiskey based. We enjoyed them. They were proportioned perfectly, not a sweet kids drink, not overpowering; the taste of the whiskey was there but you enjoyed the root beer and other flavors.Mama Roux serves Brunch on Sunday until 4:00pm, we had walked in about 3:30pm. I was very glad to see that we were made welcome as were other customers who entered after us. We did not get the sense that “Hey we’re about to close and you’re bugging us coming here now” that can be present in restaurants at times. Later the server explained that they close from 4:00 to 7:00 go get ready for the evening where they serve Cajun style food family style and have live music.Jeanmarie had crab/catfish cakes. She enjoyed them a great deal, they tasted very fresh. I ordered the corned beef hash meal. It was a bowl of their version of corned beef hash with two eggs on top and some toast. It was great. The hash isn’t the style I’m used to, all the ingredients are there and done very well. It is more of a deconstructed hash in a bowl…corn beef, potatoes, caramelized onions, spinach (I know the spinach didn’t sound like it goes with it, but it worked, and worked very well). Our water glasses were kept filled, our waitress (I believe there is a new politically correct term for that function/person, but I’m old and I don’t care) was attentive without hovering, she was patient as we asked her questions regarding the menu, our dishes were not whisked away as we ate the last bite which is very annoying.Overall we enjoyed our first visit to Mama Roux and will definitely return, I’m not just saying that, we will. I look forward to trying dinner. I wish the owners well. Based upon our visit today I see no reason why they will not succeed, and I will have a Cajun style restaurant to visit.
We drove all the way from Queens NYC, just to get out of the city. A local business owner suggested this restaurant and we took a chance.Oh boy, what a beautiful surprise!!! The staff is great, the food was amazing and the atmosphere is pretty cozy.Sure, its a drive from NYC but will gladly come back.
Amazinggggg!! I was here with a party of 7 in early December, one who is a born and raised Southerner...we all loved the food! We had the mushroom poutine (perfect if youre a mushroom gal like myself), the gumbo ya-ya (it was magnificently done & seasoned) & the bacon & brussels (also a culinary delight) to start...we then had the oyster poboy which had large oysters spilling out of the sandwich and fresh slaw, the pimento grilled cheese which was decadent yet classic fare, the sweet potato mash is the best Ive ever had in flavor and whipped texture, the blackened rainbow trout which was another perfection with the cajun crawfish cream andddd the Mamas fried chicken bucket along with the biscuits were everything fried chicken southern style is supposed to be!!!! The BEST FRIED CHICKEN IVE EVER HAD! Tonight I decided to spoil myself and my kids with the fried chicken, biscuits, sweet potato mash, the mushroom poutine & ended up w the risotto as well, which was an explosion of delicious flavors! The kids loved it! The drinks are classy & tasty, the ambience serene and almost ethereal, and the decor is an absolute beauty to behold; exquisite taste, welcoming and marvelously done. Highly recommend to any couples looking for romantic night out with great food & drinks, or any large dinner parties looking for fresh, delicious fare & high class ambience. The prices are more than fair for the quality & quantity of the cuisine as well as the experience..I didnt want to leave!! Make it a point to go try Mama Roux!! Im going to hit brunch next..True southern blackened shrimp and gruts, anyone??? 😉😋😋
Beautiful atmosphere with friendly staff. Try the delicate chicken pate, crunchy fried chicken. Pork belly is nicely seasoned and gumbo good, though both heavy on the salt. Rabbit is a very rich, saucy dish, while trout is prepared with a lighter hand, seasoned in a true cajun style. Service is pleasant, but erratic and kitchen still has to get into a rhythym. But overall a great addition to the area and almost five stars with some tweaks.
Masterful delivery of cuisine and cocktails by a kind and attentive staff. We booked a 30 person private party with the team at MamaRoux and hope to do so again next year. The menu dips into all of your favorite crispy fried corners of cajun-creole goodness. I really loved the Mushroom & Farro Risotto but I would be lying if I said I didnt wake up and immediately think of that damn fried chicken.... SO GOOD. Food, drinks, and service at a level most restaurants dream of in 3 years, let alone 3 months.
Delectable and the atmosphere was inviting and warm..............Biscuits and Gravy was so flavorful and nothing like I ever had before. If I could imagine NOrleans.... it would be the biscuits in gravy... sweet, salty, smoky and the heat builds just to chill and build again cant wait to go back! 💜
Just had dinner there tonight, a Thu night. The restaurant was packed. We were lucky to find a table since we had no reservation. It is nice to see a Cajun style restaurant in Newburgh. I had the rabbit and the gumbo. The rabbit has an excellent biscuit, as good as Popeyes, the mushrooms and gravy were delicious but the rabbit meat a bit scanty. On the salty side. The gumbo was short on file and way too salty. It would help if the chef had some original gumbo, say in New Orleans. In my early training days, the best gumbo in town was on Friday at Hotel Dieu Cafeteria. The decor is very nice and tasty, but the place was very loud tonight. Some sound dampening on the stone walls and ceiling might help.I would definitely go back next time I travel through Newburg; maybe they will add turtle soup on the menu! Cajun Grocer is a good source for that!

2022-05-02Wow wow wow. And another wow. Mama Roux delivers a stellar dining experience. We made a reservation for brunch with the ability to specify outdoor dining, as we were traveling in the area with our dog. We were seated promptly at what felt like the best table in the house, under a beautifully constructed porch area with interesting architectural salvage. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. They gladly brought our pup water in a disposable container. The only tough part of the experience was choosing from all of the incredible menu options. We were thrilled with the Korean chicken and waffles, and shrimp and grits. My alcohol-free cocktail was fragrant, pretty, and delicious. The interior decor was impeccably done- even the bathrooms were gorgeous! My husband is trying to convince me that it wouldn’t be crazy to drive 2+ hours for brunch here another time soon, and we very well might. I know it would be worth it! Already looking forward to the next experience at Mama Roux.

2021-12-04Thought I wrote a review but I guess I get to do this again. I would come back again of course as they have many things going on here including delicious dishes I haven’t try yet.We got here on a theme night which looks like Havana night or 60s. All the staffs are dress up and bring the life into this little town. I think this place has the best cocktail and food in miles and best date spot.I ordered their fried chicken which is kind of a given for a southern theme restaurant. It didn’t disappoint at all and I actually love it. Every pieces are well marinated top with a few side each with individual flavor.Decoration here is romantic and lively. It’s a great change to pandemic life especially on a reasonably warm night and their outdoor dining. Also the service is amazing and warm.

2022-06-20A true gem in Newburgh! Worth 100% of the cost which is about $30-$40 per person if you get a cocktail. We went for brunch and I got the soft shell crab Benedict which was absolutely delightful.New Orleans influenced decor is spot on to create a cozy atmosphere that doesnt feel out of place.Dont miss an opportunity to go here!

2021-11-14I want to begin by saying I had high hopes for this place. A very creative idea in an area where I would not have expected it. The ambiance was terrific, down to the wall decorations and the mesh of tranquil but attention grabbing colors of blue and brown. The service by Caitlyn our server was 5 star so much so we gave her a nice tip. She was the only server working the tables along with two other brilliant servers at the bar. This was a problem as we waited 10 minutes after sitting to meet Caitlyn. Who was very apologetic. For a 40 seater indoor (excluding the bar of about 8 not including those sitting outside) restaurant, a 3 server and one hostess model was awful and it showed. Caitlyn did her best but a bit rough to serve the crowd. We ordered the sweet biscuit and I have to tell you this was not very good. It felt like Pillsbury dough biscuit you get in the can. They simply bought the smaller versions and cut some fruits in it and placed it on top of milk chocolate. It was not very good at all and not for $15 dollars for two biscuit. Our meal of Korean chicken and waffles and the plum and black kale salad was okay. The salad had pistachio of which my wife is allergic but Caitlyn was quick to correct this for us (amazing woman). The chicken and waffle idea an interesting combo but didn’t work. First thing it was cold and had a piece of hair in it. Which Caitlyn once again correct. the soy sauce and the syrup and whip cream were an interesting combo not my taste but it was ok. Our eggs with cheese came out very late and the hash brown (which never came out) were replaced with baked potatoes which was just ok.Overall it was a great idea but brunch menu was not very good. Our server made things so much more manageable. We wish them luck in the future but sadly we won’t be going back.

2021-08-14Overall nice experience. Our waitress was awesome although obviously overworked. Seems to be the norm these days unfortunately. Our cocktails were fabulous. I had the Freya which was excellent. Appetizers were spot on, delicious. My grilled trout was excellent, crispy on the outside and steaming hot and tender inside. Two of our party had the Jambalaya, which was disappointing. First there was only one crawfish, more of a garnish than an ingredient. The jambalaya was lukewarm and seemed like it wasnt cooked long enough. It had taken so long for it to come out of the kitchen that we were offered a free drink so I found this puzzling. This was our first visit and we will certainly come again soon.

2022-02-28The monthly drag brunch is such a great experience! The cocktails are always stellar at this restaurant, shout out to Patti!

2022-03-20Totally unique and cool vibe with outstanding food and drinks! The only reason this is not getting five stars is they need to offer one or two more mainstream choices in the food arena. Not everyone will embrace the eclectic, foodie options and will want more standard fare. That said, if you are the more adventurous type, Mama Roux does not disappoint. The food is very fresh, perfectly prepared and bursting with flavor!

2022-04-22Friendly service, cute spot and really great cocktails. The food was sadly mediocre. Came out “warm-ish” The fried chicken was breaded strangely, had no seasoning and was quite dry. (I’m from the south and know my fried chicken!) I’ve never seen a breading like this one and it may be my least favorite of all time. The escargot came out nearly cold. Bummer! The collard greens were actually really good, in hindsight. Apple cider vinegar really does do the trick.Seems like a cute spot for cocktails and snacks!

2022-07-15Everything was excellent. The only reason I give this place a 4 is because at the end of our dinner we ordered a shared dessert. The description of the dessert in the menu sounded right up our alley. We ordered it and waited only to receive a deliciously flavored dessert inside of a purse pocket with completely raw dough. That did not take away from the overall enjoyable experience we had.
