Great family owned spot in a convenient location. Highly understaffed, but they still keep an up beat attitude and the food was delicious. The pho broth is delightfully savory with hints of sweetness. I love the addition of Napa cabbage in the chicken pho. The grilled eggplant blew my mind. The sauce was sweet and savory and the char on the eggplant gave it even more depth.Food comes out quick and fresh (six dishes came out within 15 minutes.) Pricing is very fair especially since the cost of inventory has gone up at least 30%.
I ordered the Mamasan’s Noodles for pickup (along with the Vietnam Pho and Thai Rice Noodles) over the phone. I proceeded to pick up the order at their drive thru window with no issue. Without opening the containers in the car, I appeared to receive everything I had ordered. However, when I got home and opened everything, I realized I received one incorrect dish. After looking over the menu, I believe it was actually the Thai Curry Speciality Rice Dish…? After driving all the way home (hungry and tired), I just ate the dish I was given. It was quite tasty, but was still disappointing as it was not what I ordered/ paid for.Edit: I went back a few weeks later to try the Mamasan’s Noodles. The service again was great, but the dish this time was quite unsavory which was very disappointing.
I work across the street at the hospital. I came over and parked in the lot so that I could look at the menu on my phone and decide if I wanted to call in my order to go or go in. A man came out and was extremely rude, essentially kicking me out of the lot. he said it was very busy (restaurant is empty and there are 7 open spots directly next to me) I told him I was just checking the menu and deciding and he essentially told me that I was lying 😳. I’ve never experienced such a rude employee. What terrible customer service. I understand people sometimes park there but I literally was in the spot for TWO whole minutes and had just pulled up the menu, I even turned my phone to show him. He seemed very unhappy and rude. I won’t ever go there after this. I went to mcdonalds instead.
The food here is outstanding, with a tremendous amount of variety. If youve never tried Vietnamese cuisine, you NEED to give this place a try. Those who love spicy Thai dishes will really enjoy Mamasans. And for those who dont like it spicy, they have lots of choices for you, too.
Friday night and the place is pretty empty. Hmnn... was seated right away and presented with the menu and a glass of cold water. Several wait stag are roving around, all busy. Almost as soon as i put down the menu, one of them asks if i am ready to order. My food stress via a different staff member very shortly thereafter. Food is tasty, and service continues to be quick. Very nice experience.
Mediocre food, but I figured it was likely not the best since I ordered right before closing. Not a pleasant experience on the phone ordering. Planned on giving them a second chance, until I saw a gentlemen chase someone out of their parking lot today while sitting in the Starbucks drive through. Perhaps they should spend more time focusing on their customers, rather than chasing people out of an empty parking lot.
I first experienced Mamasans when they had a little store on Exchange Street downtown back in the late 80s. It was love at first bite. I have been following them from location to location ever since. My absolute favorite restaurant. I swear I can eat it every day. Its always fresh and flavorful. And it is true they do remember your name when you walk in the door, as they should since we have been in a relationship for 30+ years. :)
What a wonderful restaurant with excellent tasting, quality food. We enjoy ordering from here regularly. She takes great care in making sure the food is prepared perfectly and offers a fantastic variety on the menu. Our family wishes them great luck for success and prosperity at their new location. This will definitely be an asset to the area.
Took a few steps out of my car while a male employee came running out of Mamasans yelling at me from the building that I couldn’t park in that spot. I was so shocked, I tried saying I am meeting a friend for lunch there, I’m running into Starbucks to get coffee first (since it was lunch for a 12 hour shift). The man made me feel so so so uncomfortable after abruptly sprinting out of the restaurant to berate me, I moved my car to the other side of their building. Needless to say, I walked to Starbucks then my friend and I ate else where on that street. I plan to never go back to Mamasans because of this experience. I get it’s a busy parking lot but various spots were available and I was going to be a customer. Very disappointing.
I ordered $56. worth of takeout food for my wife and I, we shared our dishes and could not continue to consume the food It was horrible. I have eaten at Mamasons since the establishment was on University ave and on Monroe ave and we have always enjoyed their food , but this time we were very disappointed with the poor quality of food . We threw the food out in the garbage. The sweet & spicy shrimp rice was very sticky and wet with no flavor and the noodle with shrimp was just as bad to include the rice wrapped and fried spring rolls. Will not visit again DONE!!!!!!
I was greeted at the register by the woman I could tell was the owner, and having never been here before (in their 44 years in business to my surprise,) I just asked for her favorite dish, whatever it may be. B was excited to tell me about the Mamasan noodles and I just shook my head and nodded yes. I admit Im fairly easy to please when it comes to Thai/Vietnamese food but...whatever they made me was incredible. It included noodles, beef, bok choy, baby corn, bell peppers, bean sprouts, peanut sauce, the works..On top of that, the customer service was above and beyond. B was very clearly passionate about her food, and Charlie recommended another beef dish I cant recall now.. But if youre looking for truly authentic Thai cuisine with a classy and family friendly atmosphere, this place is a must-stop whether youre a Rochester native or just passing through!
In for work from out of state. Dont think place was here last time I came, so I tried it out. Very good. I have weak tastebuds, so the lemongrass flavor I wish were a bit stronger in my dish, but it was still very good. That salad dressing though. Some kind of lemon and chili with Thai basil. Sooooooo good. Will eat there again next time in town to try something else from thir menu. Reasonably priced, and authentic. I think mamasan herself was working their.
Ordered 2 vietnamese coffees for $15, commented that it was a little pricey. Lady got mad saying i dont think so bla bla bla. Just say im sorry you feel that way, but with ingredient costs so high i have to charge that much...or something. Dont be rude to customers and get mad. Besides the customer service from the owner i believe, the coffee was good and workers were nice.
This is one of the best places to eat in Rochester. Everything about the place is perfect! Its decorated really well and has low lighting. The service is super friendly and it puts a smile on my face. The food is excellent! So flavorful! Cant get enough of it! The owners are always in house at the checkout talking to people. I highly recommend going here. Given its a bit higher end I would recommend dressing up a bit for the occasion of visiting this restaurant (nothing super fancy though).
The service was great. The veggies are copious and fresh, almost raw. The prices feel high for the servings. For me, the combination of under cooked veggies and too soft tofu did not really hit the sweet spot I was looking for. The curry rice dish was called spicy, but there was no discernible bite. My dining partners mamasan noodles were sweet..but lacking complexity. The hicken satay was nice...but odd when youre expecting skewers and get a cutlet. Overall fine food, Im sure some really enjoy. We wont likely go back.
Mamasans is AWESOME. Im very sad they moved from Monroe where it was 2 minute drive from my work, but Ill live! As long as theyre still serving up some real deliciousness. Everything I have had is good, which tells me you probably cant go wrong with anything you order. My favorite is the Mamasans noodles. Just really great flavor combos.
My fiancée and I came here some months back and I never got the chance to write a proper review. Around December 2020, our favorite Asian fusion restaurant that served pho closed permanently and we havent found another good pho restaurant like it since then. After coming here, it was like coming back to visit family and old friends: comforting, inviting and DELICIOUS soup. This is our new favorite pho restaurant in Rochester!
This Place has probably some of the best fried rice Ive ever had in a Asian restaurant in Rochester!! The service was very friendly and the food came out rather quickly.any of the rice dishes are on point and simply amazing and flavorful. Even the noodle dish came out really really well, I enjoy eating there.
Very good noodles! The staff is super helpful and friendly, they even make spicy foods less spicy if you ask. If you enjoy trying new things or just like Vietnamese food this is an excellent place to sit down and eat. They are also fast! We were seated the minute we came in with menus and water. The food came out in a flash, we were in and out in half an hr.
Mamasans has been our go-to Asian restaurant for years and while they update the menu from time to time, they have maintained their high standards over the years. Flavors are bright and engaging, service is always friendly, wait times are short, and the environment conducive for good conversation. We seem to always order the spring rolls, and a coconut curry dish, but have had many other entrees, all very good.
This is a great place for a a blend of various Asian cuisine. They have a very varied assortment of Asian cuisine from Vietnamese to Chinese. If you like variety, you cant go wrong here. The waitress my friend and I had was awesome. She was super energetic and gave very good recommendations. She was always prompt and her personality was so bubbly you couldnt help by smile. Id return just for her if the food wasnt great. But it is! 😊
After a few years not attending this restaurant, I took my family there for a birthday dinner. We were 6. All of us got dishes that were not tasty. I ordered a veggie curry dish and my wife ordered the same dish with shrimp. Her shrimp were extremely salty and spicy, unpleasant to eat. I ate my meal but I was not tasty. The other 4 members of our party were all unsatisfied with the quality of the food.Needless to say, we were very disappointed and we do not plan to dine there again.BTW:!The service and the people there were nice but we expect good food at a restaurant.
The owner of this restaurant is an absolute terror. Do NOT eat here. They need serious lessons on hospitality. If you look through the reviews on this place you’ll see multiple horror stories of the owner yelling at customers. It happened to us. We have literally never had such a bad experience at a restaurant before. Our food was served cold and the owner came over and argued with us that it wasn’t. Folks our food was the same temperature as the silverware on our table. It’s a shame because we love Vietnamese food at the pickings are slim in Rochester. Regardless, McDonald’s has better customer service than this place. Don’t support toxic businesses, money is already hard enough to come by!
Food was so-so. Heard a lot of good reviews about the place. Wife and I ordered two completely different noodle dishes and they came out with the exact seasonings, sauce and noodles. Just the vegetables were different. Wasn’t too impressed. Not sure what the rave is about.
Ive been going to this restaurant at various locations since the 90s. We actually held our out of town wedding guests dinner here. I have always been treated wonderfully by all the staff and owners. The menu is large, prices are fair and the food never really disappoints. Would hate to see the new Whole Foods close this place.
This is my favorite place to eat. They provide consistently fresh, delicious, and high quality food. The owners genuinely care about their customers and get to know their repeats. The décor and atmosphere make it a pleasant experience and they can accommodate for kids. I have been going here for years and I have never been disappointed.
I have eaten in Mamasans in its first year, used to be good. Compared to earlier eats quality is way down. Its turned into a fast food partial Thai, for example, I ordered Pad Thai, it had lot of lettuce tomato, pad Thai tamarind sauce was completely absent, it was put together fast with cold cut salad ingredients. My second dish was squid spicy salad, this had tomato water tons. Squid was good but other ingredients werent put together well..
Had a great lunch here. Wife got the sweet potato noodles soup and polished it off in short order, she said it was amazing.I had the spicy coconut soup with chicken. Nice blend of spices, I didnt have to add a thing!Daughter got the Pho GA with extra broccoli. She thought the broth was perfect!Nice place, very clean, friendly staff!
The owner is incredibly mean. I ordered food for my birthday and it was subpar, I called to discuss and she yelled and berated me. It was incredible -I have never been spoken to like that before. They need some serious customer service training if they want to stay in business.
Vietnamese Crepe was surprisingly good, with Shrimp. We read so many mixed reviews but Ive had a good experience there in the past, and we were not disappointed. Delicious noodle dishes, friendly service, and a very nice atmosphere. A little pricey, but good quality food. Definitely competitive for the area.
From my limited experience (Ive only been here a couple of times) the food is not the most authentic Thai or Vietnamese Ive had. However, Im used to dining in San Francisco which is on a whole different level. That being said, the meals Ive had were very tasty and reasonably priced. The atmosphere is very clean, comfortable and relaxed. The highlight of my visit tonight though was Vinh! He is super-friendly and made us feel right at home. Im not on Rochester often, but I will certainly be back to Mamasans given the quality of service I get there! Kudos to Vinh for going above and beyond to give us a GREAT dining experience.
Just OK. Food is pretty standard Asian-American fusion. Way too much peanut stuff, if you dont like peanuts, dont eat here because it seems to be in every dish. I always get the same waiter, the taller skinny guy thats kind of balding. Something about him creeps me out, and he has a nasty tendency to appear at our table at the worst possible time, to ask some inane question. Last time I was there, he was chowing down on food at the bar mid way through serving us...GROSS this place seems to have cleanliness issues, although its not the grossest restaurant Ive eaten at. Overall I wouldnt recommend.
Delicious, comforting and affordable Vietnamese noodle soups and dishes with local flair. Most menu items are within vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and/or vegetarian dietary restrictions. Takeout menu is extensive. Delectable flavors abound in custom house sauces.Unique, swirly, natural and modern interior design with drop lighting and many plants coalesce into a charming ambience. They sell quality chopsticks for home use at the checkout counter.
Clean, good service, wish more chicken in chix n crispy noodle dish, than the 4 little pieces we got. They were the diameter of a pencil, n all if placed end to end were shorter than 3/4 of the pencil. The Peanut rice was good though. All Thai/ Vietnamese food not to seasoned though. Pleasant staff
What a nice surprise this place was. Had to be in Rochester for a Dr appt and needed lunch. It easy to find and the food was fantastic. But my favorite part of the whole dining experience was our waiter Vinny, Vin, Vincent or Vin Diesel. He was so knowledgeable of the food, he loved to talk about his mother and made us feel like family. I highly recommend Mamasans. Im planning another trip there in November for the next Dr appt.
Food was average, nothing to write home about. The big surprise came at the end when they included the tip on the check which is, of course, against the law in NY. Then when you got your credit card receipt to sign, they included an oversized tip line. I would not recommend this restaurant.
I placed an order for 7 people over the phone and they hung up on me before I even finished giving my orders. They didnt tell me a total. When I went to pick up the food I asked if I could pay for each person seperately while it was quiet and she said no. When the food came out she rushed through it. That made no sense to me. The food is good but they need a host that is more personable and better on the phone.
STRONG CAUTION ON GOING HERE. HORRIBLE, BEYOND HORRIBLE. If I could put NEGATIVE stars I would. I cant even describe how terrible their management and service is. As a customer I was screamed at and insulted by the owner HERSELF. Ive never in my life ever been excited to eat at a place, and then leave feeling victimized, unsatisfied, upset and shaken. The food isnt even that great, BEYOND overpriced and the atmosphere is so unwelcoming its not even funny. In addition, the bathrooms are filthy. If you want to be abused by a restaurant, then this place is for you. STRONG CAUTION ON EVER GIVING THIS PLACE YOUR MONEY.
I may using noodle and rice joint with a variety of options including a ton of vegetarian menu items. Everything is customizable. Can change the level of spice, add or remove vegetables, add or remove protein etc....they do have limited desert options, but what they have are all fantastic!! I highly recommend this place if you like Asian.
I was expecting more from an established Monroe ave restaurant. On arrival we ordered Jasmine tea. I was at the very least expecting a tea pot with loose leaf tea. What I got was a glass cup and a tea bag. . Taking a look around I saw a contemporary feel of unique furniture. Not sure what the theme was trying to to evoke. But it definitely didnt say welcome to a Chinese restaurant. The service area and register area were just crammed with stuff that didnt need to be on display., boxes, files, paperwork, old pots. The food was at best average not unlike every small town take away. The portions were small ,salty . The rice comes out in small steel bowls like small sugar bowls. Not sure why but it gets cold fast. On my visit the restaurant was run by women wearing and assortment of shower caps while cooking. The food was brought to us by a very casually dressed man who spent the whole time mopping the floor . Not by the lady that took our order. There was no how is your meal or can I get you anything else . A very disappointing experience all round . My local chinese is just as good or bad
Im on a mission to find the best pho in Rochester, and this was one of the last places on my list to try. I went on a Tuesday afternoon around 1:30pm and was seated quickly. I already knew what I wanted, and my appetizer of fresh shrimp spring rolls came out quickly. The rolls were good, with lots of fresh basil. The peanut sauce was very runny, and the flavor was fine, but not as good other places. The pho itself also came out quickly, and was steaming hot. Lots of noodles, with plenty of bean sprouts, basil, and lime to add, although there werent any hot peppers. The broth had a good flavor, but its a far cry from great. The main knock against this place in my book is the price. My bowl of soup + spring rolls came to over $20 before tip. There are plenty of places in Rochester to get great pho for a better price.
We went to the Noodle Cafe on Mt. Hope and ordered Chicken Pho and Chicken Fresh Spring Rolls. The rolls were old and dry, the pho tasted like chicken broth from a can. Really disappointing since Mamasans has such a good reputation. Wont be going there again. The service was really good though.
Weve been going to Mamasans since she first opened over on University Avenue years and years ago. Consistently fabulous Thai /Vietnamese food. Mamasan (Bea) works very hard to bring delicious authentic dishes to her loyal customers. She makes her own special sauces which you can also buy if she has some made up. The cashew is my favorite. They remain open during all the construction business. They do a booming takeout business also.
Very bad experience for us.We used to love the food, today a waiter came very rude to our little daughter that was curious about decorations. Final comment was be careful to take her hand when crossing the avenue because a car can hit her.... we felt very mistreated.
When I walked in the door no one greeted me or acknowledge that I was standing in front of the counter. There was an old white male that was standing behind the counter at the cash register he was directly in front of me. He did not once greeted me nor say one word to me. I ordered springrolls and pho. Not the typical yummy delish meaty springrolls Im used to. It only had shrimps, veggies, & noodles. The server had the nerves to tell me that it typically come with only shrimps. Im like ummmm ok women I wasnt born yesterday. Dipping sauce was runny and far from being authentic. Its the type of sauce that you would eat with balut or in a lettuce wrap. Its pretty sad for me to say that Wegmans has better springrolls and sauce. Dont waste your money youre better off going to Wegmans or other Vietnamese resturants. Pho broth was ok the meat that came in the soup was tough. In a nutshell I wouldnt go back! Service was very very very slow. Waited 30 min for a server to acknowledge our table. We patiently waited and waited and waited til we couldnt wait any longer before we die of hunger. I went from hungry to hangry. Finally someone came to our table after we waved our hands in the air to take our orders. Trust me when I say the food is a notch better than ok that has to tell you a lot coming from an Asian person. I grew up eating homemade Thai & Vietnamese food.
I have been a long time customer of Mammasans since they were over on University - the food is consistently good and I think by now I have eaten my way around the entire menu at least twice! I am a big fan of the Thai Curry and the Pho - but havent found anything that wasnt great.I eat out a lot but what keeps me going back to see Bee and Anna at Mammasans is that over the years they have made a huge effort not only to remember me and what I like , but they remember my Wife, my Dad, my kids, my grandparents, etc. If you pay attention while youre in there you will note they are the same to everyone and thats likely the reason the place is consistently filled with regulars. If you want a place that has great food (dine in or take out), great service, and will get you out fast if youre in a rush or your kids are tired - I highly recommend giving Bees homemade sauces a try at Mammasans on Monroe or the Noodle Hut on Mt. Hope!
Been eating at Mamasans 4 decades. Ive lived and traveled all over the world and have never been in a restaurant that comes close to Mamasans for Vietnamese/Thai food. The fried springrolls, I prefer with peanut sauce, though I like the fish sauce default 2. The chicken mango salad is my fave, amazing taste.
Good food, good service, relatively good value for the money (There are less expensive places to go!) - the only complaint is that we had a party of about 12 people and wanted separate checks; we were told that they do not do separate checks. We did not argue but were somewhat surprised and disappointed.
Horrible customer service from owners. They played favoritism to another customer that traded favors for free food and actually waived off our waiter that was coming to take our order so that they could be served before us. Food overpriced and not worth it. Will never go again and patron a place that disrespects their own customers.

2022-06-02The chicken mamasan noodles were the best noodles I have ever had in my life! Wowee are they delicious! Smokey nutty flavor with noodles cooked to perfection! The lady running the place was super funny and sweet! I havent even finished eating my lunch, had to write a review right away, already cant wait to go back!

2021-12-05If I could give them 0 stars I would. This is a terrible almost $20 meal. We ordered the sweet & spice fried rice with chicken. Theres hardly any chicken, the peice are chopped up so small. We asked if the meal came with veggies & it did, toddler style veggies, peas & carrots. It does not taste like sweet & spicy. This meal was not worth it at. We called to see if there was something else she could do for us and of course she refused to help us. I could have went to a basic Chinese restaurant and gotten better than this. Dont waste your money going here!

2022-05-17It was an interesting experience there, however it wasnt enjoyable as I felt the place turned more into a cafeteria, and for the price Im paying for the meal, Id like to feel as though Im not rushed. Let me explain. It is highly efficient, but not enjoyable. When you arrive, you first go to the payment counter and order your meal, and pay. By the time you sit down, within 2 to 5 minutes, your meal is in front of you. Granted if youre here to eat fast its nice, but I felt very pressured to eat fast and leave. The family that owns the restaurant are wonderful, and it is a novel idea, but not the sort of place Id come back to eat. The food isnt necessarily as good either. I got the Thai Curry Chicken, 5 star spicy, and it was not spicy, as well as there were only three small pieces of Broccoli in it, I should have ordered extra vegetables. I miss the former place. This feels more like a fast food restaurant. I cant blame them as they are in Collegetown in the city, and maybe this is a better model to serve the kids. I just miss the personal service.

2022-04-06Service is good. Food is little expensive for the quality and quantity both. It’s not that food is not good, it’s good but I had expected a little better.

2022-05-20The food was awesome. So many options it was tough to pick. The staff were all incredibly friendly and polite. There was no wait, our food came out extremely quick and was very fresh. They had ample parking available which can sometimes be tricky in this area.

2021-10-29Terrible service. Person taking the order over the phone was very rude. Totaled order after two people’s order ( there were 4 of us) had to repeat order completely from the beginning. She put me on hold, but didn’t tell me, just ‘click’, so I thought the call disconnected. When I called back, she YELLED at me ‘ why did you hang up on me?’ I didn’t hang up Completed order and then went to pickup at the window. Order bag tied in a knot so I couldn’t check it. Drove back to work opened the bag and there were no spring rolls. 3 orders had spring rolls. They forgot all of them! Called to complain about the missing items and again treated very rudely. Person on phone YELLED again, ‘ you know you don’t have to come here!’ I’m sorry, what??? That’s not how you treat people. We did nothing wrong! This wasn’t our first time ordering from here, not sure we’ll ever go back.

2021-12-05Terrible customer service. My wife(pregnant) and I ordered takeout the Sweet and Spicy Fried Rice w/chicken & vegetables. I initially ordered the meal with the intent thinking it would be a much more of an adult palate. I called back thinking there would be a replacement meal and Mamasan did nothing but told me to eat it and have a goodnight(yeah i know). Now we have to settle for french toast sticks since we wasted almost 40 on the meal. 3 TINY PIECES OF CHICKEN! Dont play with peoples hard earned money out here.

2022-02-06Appetizer was the Bean Cake which was super tasty. Main dish was the sweet and spicy special rice dish with pork. Absolutely delicious. Kicked it up a notch with some of the garlic chili sauce at the table. Bam! It was great. Would do again.

2022-03-05Food was very tasty only thing they could improve is the steamed dumplings were not fully strained of water before serving.I would recommend this place for takeout as its not really setup for a dining experience- you get yourself menus, you have to get up from table to order at the counter, you have to get your own takeout containers etc. If you eat at the restaurant its only really for convenience.

2021-07-02Was greeted at the door! Introduced to Mamasan❤️Went in for a quick lunch, and I have to say it was faster than fast food. She brought my meal over in 2 minutes 😃 Great food and experience!
