A wondrous hole in the wall I would not have found if I didnt enter trying to escape the heat. The passionate staff and sheer abundance of raw material makes this place a haven for the enlightened and creative, although trinkets like pins and buttons makes this place attractive to the casual enthusiasts too.
Terrific customer service and fast shipping! I made a mistake on my order and customer service was quick to help me and I received the correct order and they shipped super fast. They also have buttons/craft supplies that are pretty hard to find! Love this place, cant recommend it enough.
Heard about this place for a long time, but didnt need anything. Then I bought a vintage overcoat from 1937, missing some horn buttons. I came with my button to match and they showed me to a Button Room at the back of the store: it was like Narnia. They had everything you could imagine, including my horn buttons. I bought some tassels for my antique keys as well. This place is a paradise, and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
FUN sweet little honey hole and if you buy enough then request a discount and you might get one (I did). PLEASE support the small fabric and notion store before they are all gone. The store was stocked full but in order and easy to navigate. The staff was helpful and not all up in your neck as you shopped.
Perhaps a bit higher priced but at least I could find the exact tortoise shell buttons needed for my trench coat. Not a single Big Box store was able to provide 8 - 1buttons and 4 - 1/2 buttons all the same tortoise color. I couldnt even mix and match the buttons from store to store. Ridiculous !!! Turn around time for my online order was less than 5 business day and the buttons are beautiful. Could not be happier with my purchase and will not hesitate to order again.
A wonderful experience. Staff were super friendly even at closing time. A must visit if you’re looking for a fantastic selection of ribbons, patches, buttons and trims. I was amazed at their button selection and managed to find exactly what I was looking for. The military iron on patches are definitely worth checking out too! Thank you for creating an incredible shop.
M&J Trimming is a wonderful store, full of inspiration and high-quality yarns. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, but it is quite expensive. I go there for inspiration and their less expensive yarn such as Cascade. Once in a while, I will treat myself to a really nice cashmere yarn though, and its definitely worth it.
Ive been here several times over the years on trips to NYC and Im just... never that impressed. The shop feel huge but it also feels understocked, like they could use the space more efficiently. And the prices and selection arent great. There are tons of other trim shops in the garment district with better selection and better prices, its always a little baffling to me that this one always seems to pop up on must see lists.
To the owner. You have a beautiful store with a great selection. However your people are clearly unhappy. I counted seven employees and only 3 customers. Not one was interested in helping any customers. At one point my boyfriend asked for help. The employee got frustrated and said she would be back. When she came back she proceeded to make fun of my purchase in Spanish with a couple of the other team members. Im sure you have worked hard to build up a business in the city. Maybe it is time to focus on employee training. I did notice you had an entire room dedicated to discounted merchandise that is a clear indication of your staffs inability to sell your products. Most of the textile industry has moved away with very little signs of returning to the US. I wish your store all the best on future improvements. I will be inclined to spend my money elsewhere.
I came here on a Saturday around 2pm.I came looking for plain elastic to make elastic belts. They have some good options.A great assortment of ribbons, novelty and varsity letter appliqués, elastics, buttons, piping, pom-poms, lace & beaded trims.Sometimes I feel like they have lots of novelty options. Like fancy and unique trims. I wish they had more basic, simple trims in varying sizes and qualities. For example, I wish they had more different types of black elastic. More widths, thicknesses, in more varying qualities. There’s also a Groupon deal sometimes available for $17 for $30 credit to spend. So if you come here often, take advantage! This store is very organized and has plenty of sales associates to help. Also, a great location in the middle of midtown near Bryant Park.
A friend and I were passing and decided to stop in... our heads were spinning from the variety, and the gorgeous selections. They had a bridal section, which I have to admit, was pretty cool! The staff is knowledgeable, polite, and attentive enough to let you have your space but still be available, which is a huge plus.
This place is SO incredible! I was in the wedding section in the back looking for shoes and jewelry for a very fancy occasion. The women working there couldnt have been more helpful and were just the nicest! They have jumped through hoops to help me with all sorts of crazy details. Also, the Angela Nuran shoes they sell are incredible... very beautiful, and comfortable! This place is a find!
I bought several yards of beaded trim that I wanted to use for my wedding veil. I did my due diligence and asked the employee who sold me the trim if I could return it if it didn’t match my veil. He said yes. I never would have bought it if I knew I couldn’t return it. It ended up not matching my veil and I went back to the store to return it. Apparently the store policy does not allow returns of any cut materials including this trim. I told the manager that her employee told me I could return it and the repeated response was that it is store policy. This made me very angry because I asked specifically if I could return my purchase and was given incorrect information. This store refuses to take responsibility for its own employee’s actions. They wouldn’t even give me store credit to attempt to rectify the situation. This is not how you treat customers and I will not be returning to this store. I will find another store for my future wedding needs.
Great place but the service is terrible. We asked one of the workers if she can help us, she looked at us and said okay but then she walked away. Later I asked for some prices and she said look at the box, inside the box and again walked away...then we just decided to leave the place.
The employees here are very unprofessional. I had minimal assistance and when I asked for assistance, a male sales associate seemed extremely annoyed at the idea of helping me. I wouldn’t have bought anything if I didn’t seriously need it. His attitude, as well as several others were very unwelcoming. When it was time to complete my purchase, a female employee handed me my receipt and a pen to sign and then she walked away. I thought this was extremely unprofessional. The service of the store does not coincide with the exceptional brand or the quality of the products.
At first, I had some misgivings, because the trim I needed was in two pieces and there were issues with my order. However, I spoke to a wonderful woman named Claribel, and she sorted out the whole thing, gave me 25% off and upgraded my shipping so I will get my trim by the end of the week! Totally turned the experience around, so I will be a repeat customer for this lovely place of wonders. Thank you so much!
I am furious with this place. I called before visiting to ask if they had two items, both of which the person on the phone went to check for and reported yes they had them. I wasted so much time going in to the store, b/c lo! they did not have what I was looking for. Made no effort to compensate or console. Im giving 3 stars because yes they have good stuff, but seriously, go down the street and go into any other shop. Its all the same stuff. F this place. F you get M&J. You get an F. For furious.
Years ago M&J Trimmings was a place of wonder it was like I was Alice and I came into wonderland today m&j is more like a small commercial store that has a few things in it nothing entirely completely unique in its nature or that you couldnt find in another store I think I would only shop there if I really really need it something right away but looking for unique items or that feeling of going into wonderland no longer exists but I still say it is a great place to shop
Working on a couple of projects and was able to find almost everything I need. They have many colors of zippers and thread as well as tons of buttons and trimming. Unfortunately (for me) now they seem to be focusing more on patches - I really just needed items for my sewing project. But if you are a patch lover check it out!
I got a groupon to use here and was pleased and intimidated at the same time (its so fancy!). Great customer service, the store is impeccably neat and clean. A little more expensive than the other stores in the area, but youre guaranteed to find what you need there. Highly recommend.
Without the Groupon, this store would be quite overpriced, but even with, I ended up spending $6 more on top of a $30 Groupon for a few buttons and a patch. Yes, this may be the biggest, go-to store in NYC for buttons, trims, and what not, but the people working here are RUDE! That is if you can even find someone to help you. The sullen young lady that reluctantly helped me started whispering, laughing, and making faces with an older male salesperson when I approached with another box of buttons. The cashier was also extremely rude - what the heck is up with this place??? To make matters worse, when I checked my receipt, they didnt charge me the clearance price for a few items. And they DO have competition - its not like theyre the only game in town!
SHOP ANYWHERE ELSE. I bought one yard of trimming and asked for advice on which type of glue to buy in order to turn it into a necklace. They pointed me to a glue (E90 or something), and after applying it and nearly passing out, I let it sit outside for two-weeks. Even after the two weeks the glue reeked of toxicity. Definitely not meant to be used on anything near humans. I went back into the store to see if they could give me a new yard of trimming to replace the one made toxic by their recommendation and they refused, saying it was my fault I listened to their recommendation. I wasnt even asking for a refund - I just wanted to replace yard of $10 trimming. I pleaded and they continued to blame me for listening to them. Ive never experienced such rude service in my life. I was a fairly frequent customer there, too. Now I shop at any of the other trimming shops within 2 blocks.
I call and call and they wont answer the phone. I email and they wont get back to me for two days and still the person I need to speak with doesnt call me back. Left a message...3 X and still no call back after 24 hours. Must be nice to be so in demand. Sucks for me however because I want to place a very, very large order. So, there is a smaller place around the corner that will take my order and M & J, adios!
Less selection, higher prices, and no cohesiveness between online store and in-person store. They dont know where things are because theres no order beyond a general idea. The amount in stock is wildly inaccurate in their computer system. I went there a week and a half ago, from NJ, because I need a specific trim for a clients order. I can only seem to get this trim from M&J.Their online and in-store computer said there were approximately 27 yards. They couldnt find it and then the answer was just- At 27 yards we cant really know if its here or not. Thats not an appropriate answer. Twenty-seven yards is a lot of yards to go unaccounted for. Plus, I was told if I wanted them to order it, Id have to order twenty-seven yards. Unacceptable. Its something they usually have in stock so I have to assume theyd be ordering it again at some point anyway. Then, I ordered it online from them, while I was standing in the store, and the order went through, only to be cancelled on me nine days later. Over a week is an unacceptable amount of time to contact me that they dont have the trim. The whole experience is just extremely unprofessional.
First I want to say this was an amazing, phenomenal, and honest experience from the start! I walk in the store and saw many of great pieces, jewels, and fabrics. I had a multitude of questions that were answered to the tee! There was one issue that turned into an amazing last hope for humanity- the detail guy was off that day... well I explained I was having a dress made from Styled By Miracle that needed to be completed by Sunday night for my movie premiere Monday evening-(this was Saturday). SAUL called the detail guy CARLOS who allowed ME to have his number so I could ask him all the questions in the world! I texted him a pic of the fabric I bought along with a pic of what I wanted it to look like. He told methe color jewels as well as the quantity to buy. Oh no another problem- these jewels had to be preordered-CARLOS not only communicated with me the entire time ON HIS DAY OFF, he told me WHERE I could get the jewels. This showed integrity, honesty, and genuine care. This went from a scary experience as I had never bought materials before to an amazing journey that gave me hope for humanity. I reccomend this store too anyone- ask for SAUL and CARLOS!
This . . . . . (how to describe . . . a total absolute thorough absentia . . . an unmitigated, unequivocallyunequivocal nihility/nullity/cataleptically/lipothymically . . . insignificancehardly . . . in shortshortshorterrer order: there are other, and muchmuchmuchlier worthwhile, useful, and - dare i day it? - SIGNIFICANT purveyor/providers that can satisfy your quest for ribbons/trimmings/lets go all together now, and visit them!!!
Worst shop experience in my whole life. I am deaf and I am disabled in my feet so I walk on cane. I wanted some items that were situated 3 yards up on wall. I asked for paper and pen to communicate and the man (hairless) frowned when I tried to ask for paper and pen and then slapped a paper and disappeared. I wrote asking about the items. Another guy brought climbing stairs and then disappeared again in a frown when I show what I wrote. Which products I wanted to buy. So I thought, ok I will go up myself maybe it is meant that I should do it myself, but suddenly people got very angry and shouted me down waving and all. Ok. Then help me, eh?! It wasnt many customers, idling workers. Finally after some attempts I got a guy to pick down stuff for me,but in clear disinterest. So my advice is that there are many other trimmings shops around with better items and often lower prices too. Never ever again.
Really disappointed, I was in NYC for one day and they say they close at 7:30 but I got there 7:15 and doors were already closed. Don’t say you close at 7:30 when you close your doors earlier; if your doors are closed earlier then that’s the real time you close. Unfair to customers.
The staff was helpful and nice but this store is 50% + more expensive than other places for Swarovski I had to make an emergency purchase and had to get it even though I knew it was extremely overpriced for example just down the block my Usual bead store that was closed due to it being Sunday I get 144 size ss7 for $5.80 here I got 96 for $10.98 i would of gotten realice as many stones for the price and gotten the pots to store them and would still have money left over
Wish I could give 0 stars. I have ordered online twice and wish I wouldnt have given them a second chance. The first time it took almost an entire month to recieve my order. The second time I never received product I paid for. Customer service is unwilling to help. Ridiculous that I have better working relationships across the world. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
How can you not love a place right in the middle of New York City the has shelves all the way up to the ceiling filled with an endless array of ribbons trims and buttons? M&J trimming is the real deal for professionals as well as hobbyist involved in the creative arts
This is where I buy loose buttons and thread. They have a decent selection, it will just cost you. M&J is conveniently located in the Garment District. They host classes and have lots of fabric supplies to suit your needs. If you plan on making corsages, boquets, hair accessories, etc., this is your place.

2022-01-31I used to buy an item and change all the buttons. There was a lady there that would help me choose and she would pick the perfect new buttons to take the item up a notch.I drove there from Brooklyn expecting the same service and what a disappointment. The selection is half what it used to be. I did end up getting buttons but I helped myself. When I asked the salesperson if there were any helpful suggestions, she just walked away. Its just not what it used to be. Save yourself the trip.

2022-06-25Selection of stones, crystals, patches - amazing. Cant beat that. Sales people not so much. I was being helped by someone showing me swarowski crystals from 3 different boxes, an elderly short sales person appeared, mumbled something as if I was going to steal it, grabbed the boxes, hid it, mumbled something again and walk away. Felt like a criminal shopping for crystals. Be prepared for a bad experience if you decide to shop at M&J.

2022-01-10Very beautiful assortment of buttons of every kind. I ended up buying 3 genuine horn buttons that look like a million bucks for about 8 dollars each. In other words: top quality, rock bottom prices, genuine and authentic NYC at its best. Also, very friendly staff. Cant go wrong in this place.
