The servers are very friendly and provide attentive service, they grill the beef ribs over hardwood charcoal table side. Its a pretty good deal considering the quality and quantity of meat you receive on top of the service. Very tasty and left the restaurant extremly full and satisfied.
We ended up at Mapo for Mothers Day this year. Originally I choose to go to Gupji, but they only had take-out until Indoor dinning at 5pm. I remembered Mapo was right up the road, so we headed there. Got there and it wasnt crowded and we were seated immediately. Our waitress were so nice, they spoke directly to our son... asking him how old he is and what would he like to eat. We go the Fried Dumplings for him in case he didnt want any of the meat, but he ate allot of meat without hesitation. This kid has expensive tastes. :D We enjoy our meal and had a great time.
Great, welcoming staff. Our waitresses spoke English/mandarin/Spanish which was a pleasant surprise. We thought the food was good but not plentiful, but sufficient. Please note if you want to order charcoal bbq at the table , you must order 2 orders of meats so expect around a hundred for the bill. The sides were excellent and had free refills . Complimentary savory pancakes , soonduboo (spicy tofu soup) and hot teas too.
I definitely enjoyed the side dishes. However when it came to service I felt welcomed yet not looked after that much. I felt like customer service could have been better especially because when I had gone it was too busy(went during a weekday). However when it came to language barrier there was no problem since my gf spoke Chinese it made it easier to communicate. If you’re wondering about the food it was honestly great. I would say to try this place out.
Unfortunately unless you aren’t Asian , you won’t be treated fairly , we were the first ones to be seated , but another family came in was given menu , starters , while we had to wait & was not given a menu & was not greeted . Sad to say , never will be going back there again.
Beware! Went in with my non-Korean friend and ordered beef rib meat and was served a mix of meat with mostly flank steak at Galbi prices next to some rib bones that were dry and had no way of being the source of the meat next to it. I know my cuts of meat fairly well. When I told the waitress she swore up and down that it was really Galbi over and over, but said under her breath in Korean “he must know something about meat.” These people are scammers and the food is really bland.
Unique BBQ place. They got the hood to vent at tables, but the tables are not gas grills. They are firewood chip, which adds that unique flavor not found in gas. In addition, food cooks much faster and the heat is really good, like charcoal. So keep your kids far from the grill and enjoy the food.
Wanted to try kbbq for the first time with my family, glad to say it was a great experience! the waitress was very patient and friendly while my parents took very long to decide what to get, and they provided us with many sides as well. they also gave us a dish on the house, and to top it off, gave us yogurt drinks (which i love very much!). definitely would come back again.
It was our first time at this place, and I can fairly say service at this place was horrible. They chose a horrible table out of many empty ones, and we kept getting interrupted by people passing by. Also one of the workers didn’t let us go, until we gave her 20% tip after her horrible service. We’re most definitely not coming back!
I told my friends about this place with my highest recommendations. I go their often. I get very good feedback from my friends. The the food there is yummy and the crew is attentive and cooperative. always when we go to this place we have a delightful time. I warmly recommend this restaurant.
I like this place! They provide splendid food, they have a rich menu, The cook in that restaurant is well trained, I love very much tasting all their food. The dishes are consistently fresh, the attitude towards the guests is friendly. I often go to this restaurant and I not even once was unhappy. I recommend it to all my friends.
My family always goes here for the delicious side dishes and high quality meat. Prices have skyrocketed over the decade, but that’s expected. Each meat BBQ averages $35-$42.Their soups have down-graded, especially since they come as “gifts” if you order a certain amount of BBQ. Wouldn’t really recommend much here besides the meat.Overall, great servers and solid food. Not my favorite KBBQ spot but I would still go once in a while.
This is my second time eating a Korean BBQ, so I pick Mapo. The staffs are friendly, and they work really quick, but other that, a really nice place to eat at. The foods are great and the staffs know what you want so they would recommend you the right menu to pick. They also tell you how to eat to get the most out of the food. 👍
I took the kids to eat at this restaurant today. The total amount is $92 plus tax is $108.71. I tipped $12.71 and gave a total of 16%. The waiter said that I would never go to this restaurant for such a small tip. I would not recommend it to you. This is my friend’s first visit to this restaurant. It’s too bad. There is a rule on how much to pay for the tip.
Its surprising to see this place has such a good review. Im from Korea and I know what a good Korean BBQ taste like. And it was mediocre at its best. Their service wasnt very good. In fact, they were quite pushy. They clearly wanted us to leave asap so that they can sit the next waiting group. Also, be prepared to be smell like a piece of bbq meat at the end of your meal. If youre thinking of traveling to this far out just to taste Korean BBQ at this place, Id like to say its not worth it. If youre already in the neighborhood, then why not.
They told us it was all you can eat and we tried to confirm that 4 different times. IT WASN’T. They also began bringing plates of food out that we didn’t order. Tried to charge us hundreds of dollars more. IF YOU DON’T SPEAK KOREAN DON’T GO. We tried settling with them for 30 minutes. SHADY.
The servers are very patient with taking orders, especially since my parents had a hard time communicating with a waitress and took long with their orders . They were understanding about us trying kbbq for the first time, and helped us with grilling our dishes. Definitely would come back
We live in the city and could easily get to Ktown for barbeque, but weve always had our friends with a car drive us out to Mapo to celebrate special occasions. Now that we have a car, we drive out to Mapo. They have a valet which makes driving there a lot simpler.Highly recommended!
The store is very cute, but unfortunately we were not served food. We ordered one item off the menu (around $45 after tip) and the waitresses said we must order more.Because we didnt order enough, and there was no point in us ordering more than we can eat, we had to leave.Never have I been to a place where how much money I have to spend was an issue. It was a disappointing experience and if I could rate this place 0 stars for service, I would.
They have great Korean food and workers are very sweet. But the lady who owns the restaurant is very mean. She didnt know I spoke Korean and talked so much means things about me and my boy friend.Little does she know... Im Korean from Korea who speaks fluent Korean. Hahah she even told her workers not to give non Korean ppl all the side dishes... cause theyre not gonna eat it anyways. And kept on yelling at workers.... felt very uncomfortable.
Worth every penny. I was so relieved to find this place, after so so many crappy and expensive restaurants I had been to in NYC. Great food, great service, great atmosphere, great music. The wine was probably the only thing I wasnt 100% satisfied with, the selection was just not up there with the food.
Overpriced food for average Korean BBQ. Staff didnt pay attention to my grill or drinks at all and burnt all my meat. Nothing spectacular here for the price range. Youre better off spending the same amount of money at a BBQ Buffet instead or try out the other nearby BBQ restaurants on the block.
This incredibly small hole-in-the-wall korean barbecue joint, located in a section of flushing where you feel like youre back in midtown, looking for parking, may be what dreams about korean barbecue are made of.for one, the kalbi is exceptional. the marinade is not too sweet, and grilled over the hot coals, tastes excellent with the light smokiness from the coals. the side dishes are standard korean fare, with nothing really, truly standing out.in addition to the kalbi, i ordered a neng myun. the taste of the broth is exceptional, and the noodles used remind me of my childhood, and the copious amounts of neng myun i would consume in the summer (it may have something to do with the fact that I spent my first 5 years of life in Flushing, NY, but still..)note, they do serve alcohol here.Do not be surprised if youre met with a long wait. It is a very small restaurant, and while they are extremely accommodating, theres just not much more they can do, at times, to accommodate much larger parties, let alone a party of two. Parking is very sparse in the neighborhood (we went on a Sunday evening), but there is a Valet booth that finds street parking for you. But i did not see any parking lots or structures close by.take your newbie korean bbq friend here, or your family thats visiting for the weekend. or take your korean girlfriend/boyfriend here to impress them. doesnt matter, this place is excellent.
HORRIBLE SERVICE! OVERPRICED BBQ. Our chinese speaking server told us that we cant order one beef and one pork belly because beef was charcoal grill and pork was gas and they wont set up your charcoal grill if you only order one beef! We were forced to order two beef, and the portion was extremely small for $39 each! When we asked for 5% discount for checking in on yelp, again, our server told us that this promotion was over, but when we showed it to other staff, she got us the discount right away! A PLACE FULL OF LIES AND DISRESPECT! Food was average, but definitely NOT worth the price they charged! There are whole bunch of other korean bbq around Flushing area! Save your money!! Thanks! I will NEVER see you again!
The only reason this place gets 2 stars is because the beef is well cooked here. Dont bother getting anything else as its super duper subpar. That being said, I gotta talk about the racism here. Its obvious the race of their customers dictates the level of service and politeness. My friend and I got the beef bbq, a pancake, and a soup. It wasnt a busy night but we were largely ignored and every time we asked for something they either ignored us or said they would get it but then just help another table. Getting treated like youre a no good 2nd rate customer is never fun and not something I expect in nyc.The racism really killed it for me here. #imdonebye
This place is the best Korean bbq, hands down.I’ve tried many Kbbq places including my parents house. But this place is just that good. I’ve read few reviews that service isn’t as great. I can see what people mean by it, but they will generally treat everyone the same and always had good experience.Forget about other dishes that’s not galbi and nengmyun. It’s the best!!!!
I have been there a few times. I only go to Mapo Kalbi when someone wanys Korean Beef bbq. I go to Hanjoo next door for pork bbq. I went in for lunch bc my friend wanted Korean bbq. I got the cold noodles.I went on Sunday afternoon AFTER the lunch rush. There wasnt a big crowd. Their beef is consistently good. It is marinated well they bring out the wood? Coal? To your table and you can grill there. Only issue is I wasnt having beef that day. So my friend didnt get the the labor intensive beef BBQ and got the Kalbi and cold noodles combo. And then because Im the queen of changing my mind I got the same.I realize we couldve gotten the full BBQ from at that point but whatever. The thing is, when you get the combo you dont get all the extra side dishes. I get that. Im not asking for eggs Im not asking for bean paste soup in not asking for 3 diff dipping sauces nor am I asking for shredded radishes. I just wanted some bean paste. Which shouldve come with the meat. - 1 star for surly attitude, passive aggressive service.Again. Their beef BBQ is very good. Ive had it. Multiple times. The ones that comes out in the combo? Forget it. Its probably left over bits. Now for cold noodles. It is VERY common to have cold noodles and bbq beef together. VERY very common. Hence the combo set. The cold noodle stock was very bland. Its like they didnt even try. I get stomach aches if the MSG is heavy handed but I think they completely forgot seasoning completely let alone msg. -1 star.I dont think I will be going back. Actually I wont be going back. I still stand bt their beef BBQ quality. But not any more.
This restaurant seemed good with all the five star ratings and reviews but when we went there they were not very friendly just pushy and the food tasted amazing but once we saw the bill we did not think it was worth it I will give them a 3 star rating because of the food but there service and prices was not as great as I thought it would be and in addition I loved there decor but I couldnt read anything on the menu and when we asked what it meant in English the lady didnt know how to describe it . Im not sure if we will be back
I stopped in here for lunch with my girlfriend and I dont think I wouldve ever found this place on my own. You need a Korean friend or a real local to find this gem. The prices are a little high but he quality of the food is what you pay for. All the meats are super fresh with ample amounts of small dishes to compliment the meats. I ordered the kalbi and nam myung (cold noodles) which were perfect for hot and humid days. Also the fact that there was a table of Korean women behind us making dumplings made the entire experience all the better. Best part of that was, we got to taste the dumplings seconds after they were made.
Great pork belly and bbq beef on a real charcoal grill. be prepared to deal with the crowds. i usually go early, anytime after 7pm is hard to get a large table for more than 4ppl. i like all the little side dishes they give you such as the pickled eggplant, kimchi, salty fish (very small spicey savory fish) , fish cake and the mushrooms. do not think for a moment that this place will be cheap. 4 adults no drinks is about $35 plus tax and tip.
This was my first foray into the infamous Flushing area for food. And I had the Grand pleasure of doing so with some friends & fellow Yelpers Cindy L., Pat F., & Steve M.I need to say thank you to Yelp, because where else can you get a group of strangers to meet each other in a totally unknown place to any of us, for a delicious shared meal?! Then we had the nerve to continue on to bar down the street for some cocktails, football & a few games of pool! The place was a little tricky to find but when we got there Cindy had already gotten us a table. It was a small place & simple in Decor. What I loved most was that it was real hardwood charcoal grills in the middle of the table. It really gave the meat an amazing flavor, oddly it wasnt smoky, just really really good.We started off with the Pork Belly & Kalbi, only to be told we had to order 2 meats for the grill..Huh?! Isnt that 2 meats?! The waiter went on to explain(Thank goodness for Stevie because his Spanish helped us with the waiter) that the Pork Belly gets cooked on an electric grill so that doesnt count. Oooooh ok, no problem well take an order of Pork Ribs also then.Of these meats I thought the pork would rock my tastebuds, but NOOO! They were good, dont misconstrue my meaning. But the GALBI or is it KALBI?! Holy Geez Moley! Talk about tender & flavorful! I cannot say Ive had a better cut of meat more tender AND flavorful. My mouth is watering just reliving those moments. And the Side dishes were OFF THE CHARTS! I dont know the proper name for them but we had a table full of yummy goodness. Favorites that come to mind are the roasted peppers with small dried fish, maybe tiny anchovies not sure but that was my favorite out of all the side dishes. Then there was the steamed eggs dish that came out bubbling hot, so fluffy, so differently delicious. There was macaroni salad, I wasnt a fan but my table mates enjoyed it. Grilled Corn, Kimchee Pancakes, Boiling hot Tofu Seafood soup(AWEsome!), multigrain rice, roasted garlic, onions, fried eel lacey stuff, Kimchee, Lettuce, etc. After all of that yeah we still wanted more, Hey! Were Yelpers! Would you expect anything different?! So we ordered the Beef Tongue & another order of the Beef Galbi/Kalbi. Sooooo Scrumdillyicious!I will say the food was great, but the best part was spending time getting to know my fellow Yelpers. What a privilege it is to be blessed by Yelp with such great cool people. And the bill came to $57 per person including tip, not cheap but we ate well & it was worth it!So please come here. Even if you dont get to eat with my crew the food will still be good.
I was in the mood for Korean BBQ. The first thing I noticed when I looked at the window, were a lot of colorful advertising and what was advertised on the posters is also true about their business card which is a self-proclaimed over the top 5 Star rating of themselves. Let me advise you to take that claim with a Big Grain Of Salt.Surprisingly when I got inside, I was the only other party in the restaurant. Seating for the most part is spacious though it is a fairly small restaurant, enough for say about 9 parties of 4 people per group.Once seated, the boss and waitress wanted me and my friend to take the seat by the corner of the cash register which found uncomfortable so the only option they gave us was the corner by the door. We really wanted the opposite corner which they said is only for a party of 4... Later they happily seated a party of two to that table.Though the restaurant was empty at the time, the waitress rushed me to order, the problem was they didnt have my Pork (#3 on the grilled foods page) and she recommended for me to go elsewhere. Consequently I was waiting for my friend and when she came, the waitress told her that we have to order 2 items from the grilled menu page in order to get Banchan which I knew was a scam to get more tips, the waitresses talking about a minimum $76 order whereas they mentioned on the table and menu with ANY grilled order. Any other KBBQ Restaurant Ive been to provides Banchan on the house regardless. Of course like suckers, we ordered 2 grilled items and also ordered the Cod Fish Soup and Cold Noodles with Beef and Egg. At this point the waitress who speaks Mandarin told us Korean people dont come here much its the Chinese people who come here because they have money. I found this to be racist but it was used as reverse logic to justify how much we ordered but of course shes doing it to justify her tips. ;-)The Black Angus they are proud of was not the quality youd expect from a KBBQ of this supposed caliber. As a matter of fact, it was sort of like a Whopper from Burger King except the Whopper does taste better. The Cod Fish Soup gave me a semi upset stomach as the fish was near spoiled and when I say that, I mean it was likely way past due and they probably chilled it in vinegar and salt to preserve it the best they can.One look at the Cold Noodles and I said no thanks. It basically looked like a once tasty noodle soup submerged in slush and the noodles were grey. My friend described it as sour and salty and the beef was hardened like a tough jerky.Perhaps what really turned me off was that we did not get half way through our meal and as soon as they brought the cold noodles, they presented the bill which was $119 before tips for 2 people. Let me say any restaurant in Chinatown/or Flushing that is decent would not only charge only a quarter of that price but you will most likely be satisfied and not be rushed in such an a manner. The sneaky boss even super powers up the AC on our table to try to rush us out. But we inevitably took our time eating.Looks like I wont be going back to this joke they made to themselves. I give them 5 stars for being malicious.

2022-01-22Food: 5Staff: 4Environment: 4The food is delicious and fairly priced for the portions they serve! Staff were super friendly (spoke to us in mandarin) and were so eager to share their passion for food and holidays with us! We were given special porridge and acorn jelly on the house for the holidays, though sadly we were already so full that we couldn’t finish everything. Their seafood pancake was huge and super crispy! The fish we ordered was crispy with great sauce and the soup was also very flavorful! Make sure to try all the side dishes as some are different from what you’d normally get at Korean restaurants in Manhattan!

2021-01-15Was here for dinner yesterday and it was three of us. We enjoyed their food and we had a wonderful time here.Service was phenomenal. Both the ladies were very sweet, kind, and amiable. As always, we ordered the same thing. They were all great. We actually came to flushing so we could go to our usual spot but unfortunately it was closed. Therefore, we had to pick a restaurant and we decided to go to Mapo. We didn’t regret at all because everything here was excellent and we had a wonderful experience here. Will visit this place again:)

2022-03-19I was very upset with the customer service I received Thursday 3/17/2022. I came in with my daughter and ordered tofu just only tofu and KALBI tang and they came out with an order of tofu soup and some other beef spicy soup I forgot the name of it. When I told them that’s definitely not what I order they said just eat it it’s really good. The waitress that took my order ran away so fast I am sure she probably didn’t even hear what I said. Just to keep the peace I still ate some of the food given to me. They then gave me a hot egg dish and said it’s on the house. I told them that is not what I wanted and to just give me what I wanted. I still never got what I wanted so I asked for the bill and paid it with no tip and walked out. After reading some of the reviews it seems to me that if you are not Korean they do treat you unfairly. When I came in last time with my Korean cousin we had the best service. I am half Korean and black clearly I don’t look fully Korean and neither do I speak Korean so the service I received on Thursday definitely was unfair and unprofessional.

2021-07-22We love this place. It’s our go to Koran BBQ place whenever I’m visiting family. Their steak is so tender. All other meats are tasty as well. We enjoyed seafood pancake, cheesy corn, japchae and everything else. I can’t wait to visit again

2019-01-25Special Korean BBQ restaurant that uses charcoals instead of heating elements. The pork and beef was tender and delicious. Service was awesome and fast.
