Mayo Academy is run by a great family. Instantly, they made me feel welcomed and part of the family. It was amazing to find people who appreciate marital arts the same way I do. This shared passion to learn and challenge the body made Mayo Academy one of my favorite places to train. Owners of this gym are experienced and patient. They are willing to explain techniques and growth is made after each class. I would recommend this academy to those who want a local place to learn self-defense and get/keep in shape.
Love Love Love this school! I have my son going for a few years, it has built his confidence, keeps him in shape, and reinforces discipline and respect.Sensei’s, Sonny and Lani are skillful instructors and always show kindness and respect to the students and their families. The atmosphere is always welcoming and is family oriented, which is something that is important to our family. Mayo Academy is an excellent martial arts school.
The Mayo Academy is an excellent martial arts school that provides a great environment for learning, training and self-improvement. Its a family-owned business and Sensei Sonny & Lanie make you feel like part of the family.Theres a diverse choice of classes available (eskrima, boxing, kickboxing, etc.) and there are weights/machines for supplemental fitness work.Sensei Mayo teaches eskrima and his credentials are topnotch. He combines quality instruction with an amiable demeanor that makes the classes fun & educational.Coach Rico teaches boxing and hes the best. He works with every student to help them improve and excel. He will help boost your cardio, strengthen your mind/body and sharpen your skills for fitness and fighting.Overall, the Mayo Academy is a great place to train and I highly recommend it to everyone.
This gym is great. They observe social distancing and hygiene rules (class size, temperature readings, sanitizer, mask policy etc) and the instructors are knowledgeable and friendly. Also the students here are very diverse and kind. Their classes range from a bunch of different styles and they are always getting new gear for you to take your stress out on. Definitely a gem 💎.
I cant say enough good things about this place. My kids and I joined Mayo Academy about seven years ago and it was one of the best things we did for ourselves. The instructors are amazingly friendly, helpful and very dedicated people. Workouts are intense. This place has helped me lose weight, improve my health and gain confidence. If you really want to learn how to fight and protect yourself, this is the place to go to. The Mayo family welcomes and treats everyone like their family. I highly recommend it.Mathew XenakisWoodhaven Business Improvement District President
My god daughter has gone here for years and now I have my daughter enrolled! It’s an amazing academy and very family oriented. Love the teaching and training style of her Sensei. Having my daughter here at Mayo helps me feel at ease knowing she is learning the proper techniques needed for self defense in a safe environment. Being here is like being part of another extended family!!! My daughter has anxiety and being here, helps. I will definitely recommend anyone to come down and join the Mayo family!!!!!
This establishment is not only a great place to learn martial arts, it is also a wonderful family based environment. Once you are a part of the Mayo Academy Family, you are always. From many walks of life, the members learn to respect each other, develop self-love and practice as many different martial art forms as you please. My family has been a part of the Mayo Academy for many years. I highly recommend it for all ages!
I went to this school for about four years and it was the best time of my life. I learn and competed Muay Thai, got into the best shape of my life and became part of an amazing family. I love Mayo Academy! Sensei and his wife are two of the most supportive people I know. They never let you quit, never let you down and will push you through the blood, sweat and tears because they know and will always see your true potential.
Mayo academy is an awesome place to train, learn and make friends. They are very helpful , respectful and I loved every second being there. I was a single mother at the time I was going to Mayo academy and I had to bring my son there everyday. Sensi made my son feel comfortable and even taught him little things. He never made me feel any type of way from bringing my son. Mayo academy at one point started to feel like family. Its an environment with love and respect. I had an amazing time training there and memories. Sensi and Sensi Lani makes you feel great after every work out!!!! ✨
Mayo Academy is a wonderful school. Very welcoming and family oriented. Both my daughter and nephew have trained there and still can recall their experiences there . They are now respectively 23 and 18. Mr.and Mrs. Mayo had a great impact on them. Now me being back in NY is thinking about joining for some kickboxing classes.
I was one of the very first students, a pioneer. Sensei Jonas Mayo definitely has a lot to offer in sharing his skills in Martial Arts. First, he cares about what you will learn and adapt from him because he knows that a good reward comes after, that is always attached to a very good reputation. Until now from 1993, I still have the basic knowledge and skills that he have shared to me. And as a person who works in a very physically demanding hotel safety and security, I am very confident when it comes to defending myself and others in hand to hand combat, with a weapon or an empty hands when it is necessary. I owe it all to this man who consistently and persistently developed his skills in the world of Martial Arts to preserved life. I highly recommend this school to anyone who are willing to learn the various skills in self defense.
My family and I love Mayo Academy!!! It has a homey atmosphere and positive energy. Sensei Sonny and Sensei Lani are very accommodating to each students’. They are attentive to each students needs and also on top on disciplining them. Aside from lesson they give time for fun as well!
From the first day I started taking kickboxing lessons here, Sensei and his family were all very welcoming. Its definitely a friendly environment and I was introduced to the sport of MMA through the great instructors they have. They take the time to make sure you know what youre doing and have been willing to stay extra if you just want some extra practice. Its a great place to get a workout while developing useful skills, definitely come check it out whether your 5 years old or 50. :)
I have been a part of the Mayo family for about 6 years now. I chose the word family because thats exactly the feeling you get when you become part of the Mayo team. Together, everyone receives a full body hardcore workout all while learning life saving self defense skills. Sensei Mayo and Sensei Lani, along with their amazing coaches, are some of the most sincere people I have ever met who will assist you every step of the way. You cant go wrong with Mayo! The workouts are great with proven results! The family of instructors and students cannot be beaten! And most of all, you will begin to feel great both inside and out all while learning to defend yourself and loved ones!
My son trained with Sensei Sonny and Lanie from a very young age. He stayed with the program for years and it made a world of difference for his growth, personal and physical. He got to meet new friends, got a great workout and learned self-discipline and hard work. The instructors truly care about their students and it shows in their dedication to the sport and the kids. Highly recommend it, especially now that they have expanded their facilities. Also, parents get to workout while the kids are on the mat, which is a brilliant way to get the workout in for a busy day. Love, love, love this place!
I have both my kids at the Mayo Academy since they were 5 years old. My daughter is a belt away from becoming a black belt and my son one belt away from a green belt. Mayo academy is a very family oriented place for all ages. Their teachings are precise for my kids ages. I would highly recommend for children and adults to enroll in their program.
I went to Mayo MMA, then known as Mayo Academy as well as Doce Pares, NYC to continue to learn Eskrima/Arnis 13 years ago. As soon as I arrived, I saw not only a truly serious facility, but also a warm and friendly environment. Sensei Sonny and Sensei Lonny are some of the best people I know as well as instructors and the whole school feels like a family. All the instructors are experts in their craft and discipline and they do a great job in teaching and training their students for any age level. Highly recommend this school for a well rounded martial arts and self defense training.
Mayo Academy is an excellent school for anyone interested in learning self-defense or competitive kickboxing/mixed martial arts. I highly recommend their experienced coaches and teacher who have the ability to train both beginners and advanced students. Sensei Mayo runs an excellent program, and he is always willing to help students accomplish their goals. If youre interested, visit them to check out their available classes!
The Mayo Kickboxing & MMA Academy truly is the Golden Standard of all martial arts schools. One of the most outstanding and noticeable characteristics of this school is the overwhelming sense of family. The instructors are always genuinely, super nice and always greet you and the students with a warm hello. They know when you have been absent, so they call, text or even send mail to ask is everything is ok? :) Love that!!! If you have the chance, please go and check out their daily classes. You will see just how much the children adore their instructors and how everyone knows eachother there. Its like one big family gathering where the children can shine and show the gifts that each has learned from their awesome instructors. What I admire about Mayo Academy is that each child is promoted to another belt level when and only they have truly earned it. Here, it is their philosophy that Black Belts are earned and not bought. At Mayo Academy, the children go as fast or as slowly as they need to in order to earn their belt ranking which I feel is the most conducive way for children to learn. Sensei Lanie and Sensei Mayo praise the children and its very endearing as a parent to watch as this feels so personal and touching.Sensei Lanie is amazing with the children. She knows them so well and truly brings out the best in each of them - she knows how to deal with their own different temperaments and how to encourage them through her nurturing tutelage.I could go on and on about Mayo Academy but one thing that stands out to me personally is their humbleness, their love for what they do, and I am very happy my children are their students.Just come to Mayo Academy and youll see exactly what this is all about. The energy is happy and inviting and the children love it. It truly is one big family and once you arrive, youll never have to look any further. Oh, they also have adult classes too! GO MAYO! GO!
I had the pleasure of training at Mayo academy for over 8 years after my second child was born, I am proud to be part of the Mayo extended family and a blackbelt of this school. During my training with Sensai Mayo I got into great shape, gained confidence and learned invaluable martial arts skills. Sensai Mayo welcomes students with open arms, he provides great instruction and continues to push you to be the best you can be while also being caring and compassionate. I would highly recommend this dojo.
I attended this school in 1995. Sensei Mayo has been like family to me ever since. Not only did I learn self defense, He taught me discipline and confidence that I now teach to my children. A few of my classmates have gone on to start their own schools because of our experience. It is definitely worth every second of time spent in there. PERFECT PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT: Sensei Mayo❤❤❤👊👊👊👊💪💪💪💪💪
I came from another martial arts school and I can say, wholeheartedly, that Mayo Academy is an excellent place. The quality teaching by Sensei Sonny, Sensei Lanie, instructors and coaches are truly the best. Their skills will get you in the door but their kindness will keep you coming back. The access to the gym equipment is a plus to get a quick workout while the kids are in their class. This family friendly environment is exactly what I need to help grow my 2 kids. I love watching them train so much, that I also started taking classes. Even after a full days work, when that adrenaline kicks in, its AH-mazing! Who would have thought that kickboxing would be so therapeutic. I most definitely recommend to anyone looking to learn self defense, let off a lil steam or just have their child involved in something. Mayo Academy is the place for learning how to defend yourself using what you have. Especially as a female and mom to a teenage girl, basic moves are a necessity. If youre still unsure, just come and watch, youll see. Awesome school with awesome people!!
My son has been attending for about a year and a half and this has been the best thing for him!!! The team is personable and make learning self defense fun. My son loves it, the class hours are great for working parents. I highly recommend Mayo Academy for all your gamer kids and couch potatoes 😁
Mayo academy is probably the best dojo out here. It’s very family oriented & everyone is so caring & attentive, especially to the kids. I’ve been a part of this dojo family since I was about 3 years old; I am now 26! My older brother was the first to attend when we were young & I’d be with him at every session. Eventually I joined & remained until high school, then my youngest brother joined as well. It’s been a family affair & we are all still very close with Sensei Mayo & Loni. Here we were taught about respect & discipline; they definitely impacted my life positively.I recommend trying Mayo Academy out for yourself & adding to the family!
For the past 2 years I was searching for a martial arts school that would best train my son and daughter. Finally, I found Mayo Kickboxing & MMA Academy in Woodhaven, NY. The curriculum is great and the instructors are awesome. It also has a great family atmosphere. I highly recommend Mayo Kickboxing & MMA Academy. Its centrally located to all highways and transportation is right outside. Give 5 stars...
I attended Mayo Academy from when I was 6 until right around 18 years old. Great family atmosphere and support in all that we did. Every year we would hold a showcase during the Woodhaven street fair on Jamaica Ave along with numerous Dos Pares tournements. The discipline, love and dedication Mayo Academy shows each one of their students has me ready to sign my two youngest children as soon as they are of age. Keep up the great work Sensai!
Learning martial arts is a tricky thing to do because youre not just going to learn a new skill, youre going to change yourself. Youre growing mentally and physically. Youre literally joining a real family. I knew about Eskrima, the Filipino martial arts, and sought out an authentic experience (in NY). So, I visited a few schools and although they all had excellent instructors (and were actually easier for me to commute to), they didnt click. My first visit to the Mayo Academy got me hooked. Yes, it was a ridiculous 90 minute commute on the train for me, but Sensei Mayo was so friendly and welcoming, it was worth the effort. Plus, his enthusiasm and passion for his art was infectious. He added something special by being selective about who he taught his skills to. The other schools I visited were also taught by Filipino masters, but their styles seemed mixed and subjective. Sensei Mayos approach was authentic and based on actual books that his system, Doce Pares, uses to pass on skills to students. It doesnt get more objective than that, and as a result, a better approach for guys like me, who need consistent drilling in order to get it.But what makes the Mayo Academy extra special is the people you train with. Like any training you do, it becomes a family. At Mayo Academy, it was deeper - Senseis Sonny and Lanie Mayo were role models not just to their students, but also their children, who trained daily right alongside the rest of us, and makes time at the dojo less like training and more like a natural part of your day - assuming youve got rambunctious cousins and nieces and loud relatives all over the place, too.Mayo Academy isnt for everyone. But it was definitely the right place for me. As a disclaimer, I am on an extended hiatus from the school and look forward to returning one day.
I started going here when I was really young, but had to stop when I was in college and didnt have the time. I learned a lot of great things. This place helped me stay in great shape and taught me important life skills. I competed in many tournaments while I was there and they helped me achieve becoming a junior world champion representing Team USA. Both very professional and personable staff that communicates well with students/members and their families. This is the first place Id look to to bring my wife and future kids to get in shape or learn anything in martial arts.
My older brother and I trained here and fell in love with both the program and with Sensei Mayos teaching style. We both learned and competed in kickboxing, grappling, and eskrima, and now, having since moved from NY and trained at other schools, we both agree that we have not yet found a place that matches the level of high-caliber instruction, passion, and sincere interest in bettering students growth, confidence, and knowledge of self-defense as was evident here. Sensei Mayo did a great job of not only teaching self-defense methods, but also constantly tying it back to real-world applications. What I also took from my training at Mayo Academy was a better understanding and strengthening of self-discipline and sportsmanship, both of which I am constantly applying throughout my daily life. Mayo Academy is definitely a great learning environment, with a family-like atmosphere for students of all ages and backgrounds and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning self-defense, staying in shape, and/or furthering personal development.
Mayo Academy is by far the best martial arts academy in Queens... Sinsei Sonny, Sinsei Lani, and the whole staff are dedicated, patient, stern, and loving. My child has definitely evolved and broke out of her shell these few years shes been a student - her confidence is soaring and shes developed restraint (2 character traits she was lacking).-Happy Parent 😀😀👍👍
Sensei Mayo has long established a training facility that fosters creativity, tradition and a sense of fellowship among practitioners. Its a great place to learn, sweat and share good times with students of the martial arts experience.Awesome staff and good vibes!- Nazir
Mayo Academy is a wonderful school with caring owners, teachers and staff. Despite my own best efforts to always stay active with my children, which we do through long walks, bike rides amd entire days spent running around the park - there was still something missimg fron their physical enrichment and self discipline. After only 1 month I noticed that my older son was able to do push-ups after struggling with them for a few years and my younger son began to develope a six-pack!!! They both also embraced the impotance of adhering to routines with greater ease, improved their confidence, gave them increased ability to navigate situations with bullies and developed an even stronger sense of disciplne that as parents we founded from a very young age. Sensei Sonny and Sensei Leilanie are not only kind, fair and fun as well as parents themselves, during their instructions of their classes they go beyond to foster every positive trait a parent would desire for themselves and/or their family. In the process of growing, learnimg and improving while you attend Mayo Academy you will also become part of an amazing family!
I learned of Mayo when my brother and sister in law started to take classes. Eventually I joined too once I started to see how much fun they were having. The first class killed me but over time I was able to do more than what I thought I could. When I got lazy they were their to push and teach me. And not just them but the whole mayo family are their to back you up. Its a positive atmosphere and I do have fun, I even find myself staying later just to talk and converse. The training is great, if I am not doing something right they will help until I get it correct. All in all it is a great place to train, learn, and make great friends.
Definitely a great program. Instructors with love and passion for the art in an awesome environment. Glad to have found such a great martial art family dedicated and focused in more than just a program. When you get into MayoMMA you are not only a student you become family. Highly recommended.
I have been attending this place for a while and from day one felt comfortable and welcomed. The instructors are always professional and push students to improve their skills. Overall the place has a wonderful friendly atmosphere and I would recommend anyone who is considering joining a gym too attend this one Definitely worth it.
Best dojo in town!!! I’ve been training here for 4 years and this year I’m going to get my black belt!!! My instructors are like family to me and they always push me to do my best and help me get better!!! I have learned so much and it has made me feel more confident and safe in public. Everyone is so friendly and we all motivate each other any way we can!! I would definitely reccomend this to kids and adults that can take classes like boxing to help lose weight, make it a hobby, or help you protect yourself and feel safer.
Mayo Acedemy is a great atmosphere to be surrounded by. The instructers are really commited to making sure you learn and grow to develop further, as well as willing to get to know you at a personal level. Overall, its a family friendly enviornment and a great place to train, so I would definitely reccomend attending here, if you are interested. Get a great workout on, build upon yourself as a person, and make a ton of new friends, sounds like a great experience to me.
Sensei Mayo is a wonderful instructor. My entire family attended Mayo Academy for years where we learned not only excellent self-defensive skills, but also increased self respect and discipline which are vital ingredients needed to achieve your highest potential in all you do.Thank you Sensei.Angel
You CANT go wrong becoming part of Mayo Academy! They make you want to go to class everyday (which can be difficult at times) but they keep you motivated. My experience here was a great one! You train hard, you make awesome friends, and become part of the dojo family:) Mayo Academy AWESOME!!!
The energy is high, from day one I felt absolutely comfortable. The instructors are very knowledgeable, its not only about the workout, they actually take the time to show you the correct technique, I absolutely love every class. Everyone from the instructors, to the students is welcoming and friendly and they are willing to show and work with you.
Mayo Academy is aProfessional and caring environment in which discipline in self defense is taught. My older children attended since academy opened 15 years ago now legacy continues with my 9 year old. They are encouraged to maintain academic and physical strength. Community of caring , knowledgable, respectful staff with no nonsense approach self defense and respect for others.
I used to train at this dojo and it is the best work out I’ve ever had in my life! Sensei is an incredible teacher, and creates a positive space where everyone is welcome. It’s a great place to work out, really learn martial arts or boxing skills, and you can go at your own pace! Highly recommend signing up for classes here—they’re the best!
My son has been going to the Mayo MMAAcademy for almost 2 years now after previously attending another MMA school. Here they teach real-life self defense skills and fighting techniques. All hands-on learning and discipline not just air punching or kicking. My son has learned so much more. Sensei Mayo and Sensei Lani treat all the kids and their parents like family. There’s even exercise equipment for the parents to use while your kid is in class. I love this place and highly recommend it!
When I joined Mayo academy 4 years ago I didnt know how much it would change my life. Through the teachings of sensei Mayo and sensei Lanie, I found the confidence to choose a different, more meaningful path. Now I work on avionics for F18s in the United States Navy. The Mayos run their dojo like a welcoming family and they care for their students of all ages. I highly recommend making martial arts a part of life, its so much more than just self defense. You can learn respect, patience, confidence and most of all, family values.
Mayo academy is an Awesome MMA school. The Sensi creates a warm and friendly, family atmosphere for both students and parents. The space is huge and there’s more than enough equiptment for all. Mayo has whipped my son into great shape, developed his MMA skills and confidence. They are truly a blessing to the Woodhaven community.
Sensei Sonny is a remarkable and phenomenal teacher. Back in 1992 Sensei Mayo took me in after my Sensei moved. I was allowed to train with him and his family, was allowed still practice my Shorin Ryu. That was the first time I experience MMA and loved it. To conclude The Mayo Academy is an excellent school for all ages, from learning discipline and self confidence, to losing weight and getting into shape, you and your family will have the best experience at the school.Sensei Andy G.Amery, Wi
This is a wonderful place to have your children come and learn self defense. I have been training here since I was five years old and now its been ten years. Ive been able to learn so many things that this place has to offer. The coaches make sure you give it your best and every day is a good workout. You always come home learning something new. This is a great place to send your kids or even yourself to come and learn martial arts. Theres no age limit in when coming here. The senseis really care about every person that comes here. Even though other places will offer you to go to their dojo, this one is the best one to come to.
I absolutely love Mayo. The instructors are extremely knowledgeable in their skills and are wonderful at breaking it down it to adults and children alike. Everyone makes you feel right at home almost instantly. I learned so much about kickboxing and Muay Thai, but also about myself. Thru discipline and persistence, I not only reached beyond my goal weight but I became strong and capable to defend myself. I recommend Mayo to everyone. Love, love, love!
The great thing about Mayo MMA is that the instructors give personalized attention to the students and point out their mistakes so that the students can improve. Everyone in the gym is friendly and supports each other. I personally only do the wrestling and bjj classes and everyone always gets personal attention because the classes are on the smaller side with around 5 students. At other gyms its difficult for the trainer to help you improve your techniques because its a larger class. The gym has evening classes which works out great for me since Im usually busy in the morning and afternoon. Sensei Mayo understands that everyone has a different financial situation and makes sure that learning, along with having a good time training, comes first with money being second. There are gyms which will bill you very rigidly. Thats not the case here. I was out for a couple of weeks due to a cold and when I came back Sensei Mayo let me extend my membership for a couple of weeks. Mayo MMA is like a second home. I trained at a few different places in the past and I wish that I found this place sooner.
I was here when I was younger and I had a great experience. They thought me the things that were best for me and they are great supporters! One day you should bring your kid here or either yourself they have great deals for the best prices ! Mayo academy is the best place for self defense or anything that you need in your health ❤️
I have tried going to several gyms, working out on my own but nothing worked until joining Mayo Academy. From the very first day that I tried them out to see if it was for me I felt it in my entire body. I loved the work out. I also love that you are working out with all different skill levels. Everyone is so encouraging especially Sensai Mayo and Sensai Lanie, they never let me give up. I joined with the goal of loosing weight and gained so much more. I love kick boxing and mixed martial arts, I gained so much confidence from it.
I went to school here for a little over ten years, and it formed some of the best memories of my childhood. Jonas truly cares about each and every one of his students, and although I havent been able to visit for a few years, I know that the new training available, has only added to the fun , self defense and overall feeling of a second home that the dojo provides. If you want to learn self defense, weapon training, competitive fighting, or you just want a new place to call your second home , give them a shot, you wont regret it and its definitely worth the money . I will always look back on my times there as some of the best.
There is only 1 word I can describe Mayo Academy and that is home. Ive been a student of Mayo Academy and a friend of Sensei Mayo for over 15yrs now. The atmosphere is great to learn desciplne and self defense and the people are wonderful. The training of Doce Pares Eskrima Boxing BJJ and Boxing have amde a major impact in my life. Sensei Mayo has helped me in all aspects of Mental Physical and Spiritual training. I have become a better friend, person and man because of his training and lessons, not only in a martial artistes point of view but and in life. I am truly blessed to be part of his family and very thankful
As a former student, I can honestly say that I had an amazing experience here! When I was a kid, my favorite part of the week was going to the dojo. Each class appealed perfectly to its age group. Its very family orientated, and all in all a great atmosphere to be around. Sensei and Sensei Lanie are the best instructors around (:
My 8y old daughter has been training with Sensai Mayo and Sensai Lanie for close to a year and looks forward to every training. Shes continuously improving in fitness, technique, and confidence. They build a family-oriented and supportive environments for parents and the young children/teenagers they train. Kids there are friendly and happy to hang out with their MMA friends. A big plus for parents is that they use the time there to work or work out. Take advantage of the sizable fitness area - treadmills, exercise bike, free-weights, etc. They are free to use while the kids are training! We are so happy with them that we enrolled our 5yr son as soon as he was allowed. Highly recommend this place!
Mayo Academy is an amazing place to work out. Everyone here is so friendly and the environment is so welcoming. I have been here for 3 years already and I have absolutely no complaints. I would definitely recommend Mayo Academy to anyone looking for a secure and welcoming environment to exercise.
Sensei mayo is a man who will push you to work hard and believe in yourself. When i first started out i had no self confidence and was very shy. When i finally got into the swing of things. I loved going to class. During his classes he made you enjoy every second because he loves what he does. Hes not some random guy who is getting paid by the hour to teach and has no motivation. He truly believes in and loves what he does. I would deffinately recommend going to him for classes. You will not regret it... trust me. :)
I trained at the Mayo Academy with my sister for a few years before moving to another state. It’s been about ten years since I left, and I still look back at it with fond memories. I learned so much at such a young age and still remember a lot of what I was taught. I appreciate the time and effort my senseis put into each and every student because they truly believe in them and can see their potential. If I could go back, I definitely would!
Have known this school for a long time since moving here. I was looking for a school that offered Filipino martial arts then I narrowed it down to two. This school came highly recommended from people in the know. When I finally walked in to inquire, that was it. I have found a place that I want to be a part of. Family run business with a tight knit group of students - with everybody looking out for one another.Filipino martial arts taught by a Filipino instructor with direct linage from Doce Pares Multi-style System supreme and grand masters.Need I say more?
Expert instructors, friendly classmates, and training that WORKS! Thats what youll get when you join Mayo Academy. If youre reading this review, its likely because youve found this place on Google search as I did nearly one year ago when I moved to NYC from Ohio.Prior to joining I had ZERO martial arts experience, but its something I had always wanted to try, and I had no clue where to begin. I was new to the city, and I simply googled martial arts nyc and came upon this place. On a whim I walked in and signed up to try that evenings boxing class with Coach Rico, and Ive been hooked ever since.Joining this dojo is like joining a family. A family of friendly, genuine people all passionate about learning, teaching, and of course, kicking ass! Sensei Sonny, Sensei Lanie, and the entire staff have created a space for everyone of all ages and backgrounds to work and have fun.Bottom line: coming here was one of the best things I did after moving to NYC. Sign up for a class, you wont regret it!
Mayo MMA academy is a very calm, family oriented environment and good for people of all ages and skill levels. I was nervous at first because I thought it would be intimidation from the advanced fighters but when I got here I saw that was not the case. In fact the people who were advanced, took the time to help out with pointers and even suggested videos to watch and practice with. Needless to say I am very pleased with the dojo and if God willing I will be training here for as long as I can.
Very diverse students. Experienced instructors and well rounded program. I especially enjoy learning The art of Eskrima Fighting incorporated with Tactical weapons training. I am so surprised that the whole package is very affordable. I will definitely refer this to anyone who wants to have a great workout, diverse skills and passion with martial arts.
Very good instructors. They are patient and very accommodating. Theyll go over things again and again and again if need be. They also demonstrate practical applications for the skills you learn that replicates real world situations. You become not only a student but really a family member of this institution.
Ahh I remember the times I spent at this dojo. Coming from a Filipino household, Mayo Academy was the most ideal place to learn martial arts. I came in at a very young age and was a shy little boy who didnt know anything about martial arts. I remember a time when we had to make a sparring circle and 2 of us would be chosen to spar. When it was my turn, I pretty much looked so much like an amateur and would really make me a laughing stock in the real world. It really made me sad but hey, you come to school to learn. The best part about that moment is when Sensei came up to me after class and gave me tips on how to better improve my way of fighting. He was very sincere and easily understandable when explaining things to me. That was the spark to my development in the martial arts.Throughout the years, I met many friends and of course sparred with them. I was able to learn many new skills and techniques which enabled me to further develop myself physically and mentally. There were times I experienced where any other person would stand up and make the wrong move which was spring into a fight however, I was taught self-discipline and self-control. As a result, I was able to maintain a clean image while having an ability to defend myself when the time comes. To this day, I still remember the techniques I was taught and I still keep myself from choosing the wrong path.Mayo Academy in general is a wonderful dojo. To me, it was like a second home. It was somewhere I always looked forward to going after school. It’s a place where you are taught many forms of martial arts while being in an extremely friendly environment. The staff here especially Sensei Jonas are very outgoing, respectful, well trained, and pretty much family. The many years I spent here unfortunately came to an end due to family moving and a more focus on education. I loved it so much that it took me days to finally say that I had to split ways. I teared a bit when I left the facility too. It was like letting go of something precious you had for so many years. To whoever is reading this review, you really should consider signing you or your child up to this academy. As a former student, I can assure that you will definitely learn a lot here while having a great time. Mayo Academy is definitely one of the main reasons for me being the man I am today.Lastly I would like to end this review with a creed we once had to recite before the class started. It’s a creed that pretty much sums up the academy and martial arts in general. “I will develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that may reduce my mental growth and physical health. I will develop self discipline in order to help bring out the best in myself and one another. I will use what I learn in class constructively and defensively to help myself and others, to help myself and others and never be abusive or offensive. This is a black belt school. We are dedicated! We are motivated! We are on a quest to be the best! One more thing I’d like to include .Thank you Sensei Jonas, Sensei Lanie and the Mayo Academy family. Thank you for being a part of my life and for helping me shape into who I am. I wish you all the best in life. God bless!
Honestly, the best place you can learn martial arts. It truly is a family business and they are caring towards everyone. I have never felt so welcomed and comfortable to be trying something out that I never thought I would. Although caring they are strict, after all they want you to learn and be able to protect yourself. I really recommend this Academy!!! :)
Coming to Mayo academy was the start of a period of change for me. I started very young I think i was about 7 or 8. I always loved fighting movies and games and always wanted to learn those moves, and look cool. Seeing Sensei do all the things in my imagination it was like seeing everything come to life. Once i began i quickly learned its not as easy as it looks. As i got further into my training i fell in love with grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and it was what i did most from that point on. It was fun it was technical. The coaches were great teachers, kind-hearted and taught much more than just fighting. The students young and old all form a family and treat each other respectively. An amazing environment to learn any fighting style you would like, and it definitely holds a spot in the making of who I am to this day.
My son have been attending classes since he was 5 years old and he absolutely loves going to class. I have seen improvements in his behavior, grades and self confidence. The teachers are friendly yet firm and they instill values and respect in their students. Five stars all way !!!!!
I have been coming here for about 5 months. Thanks to Mayo I have managed to lose weight. I was 170 and I am now 150. Sometimes I forget I am working out because I am having fun. I have learned how to defend myself and gained stamina. This place is a lot of fun, energetic and family oriented. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a fun way to lose weight and learn kickboxing. You really learn a lot here when it comes to skills and defending yourself.
Walked in and didnt know how to throw a punch, encouraged and taught by very welcoming staff who treat all their students like family, genuinely kind and caring staff. Very supportive and comfortable atmosphere. As time went on I looked back at where I started and could not believe how far Ive come and how much I improved. I wouldnt want to be trained any place else. Money well spent. Highly recommend this academy.
So we find this dojo for our children (boy/girl) a few years ago and decided to give it a try. The big banner out front said we specialize in children Im like, OK. Why not? Well, Ill tell you. They truly specialize in children. I saw it right away. The time and patience they take take to teach each student is admirable. This dojo understands that not every student learns at the same pace. Theyre coaches are great. Shout out to BJ! Over the last few years, Sensei Sunny, Sensei Lanie and their wonderful children have truly become like family. I know of no other place Id want my children to have learned the art of MMA and self defense!
My son does MMA here and loves it. The space is huge and amazing and the owners make you feel like a part of the family. Family members are encouraged to come watch AND work out on treadmills and other machines which is a HUGE plus. I can bring my younger son to play while his brother has class and I can run on the treadmill at the same time. The price is very reasonable especially since kids can come train every week day. An amazing resource in Woodhaven!
I started going to this dojo at the age of 7. I made friends and a family with the people there. I learned a lot more than just how to protect myself. Left for a few years but returned to find even more diversity there. Boxing, MMA,Muy Thai, Yoga ,and kickboxing. There are a lot more things offered than just what people think the traditional martial arts entails. If your looking for a place to learn different things or even make your skills better this is the place.
I love the training environment. Sensei, Coach Rico, all the staff, to the training partners are like a 2nd family to me.Not only did I lose 15 lbs in two months at Mayo MMA but I learned how to defend myself.I can spare now! Cant wait till I get my 1st official match!I do recommend Mayo MMA for everyone out there!
Im almost 30 years old and I went there growing up. I will never forget those good memories when I went there from 8-12 years old. Sensei Mayo and Sensei Jesse were my mentors and I loved everything I learned from Arnis stick fighting to the Katas. I remember the great parties we had too! They werent just instructors but were like family as well. To this day I use some of the warm up routines and the simple fighting techniques! Youll learn a lot and gave fun too!!!
If you wanted dedicated, highly trained instructors Mayo is where you go. I trained with Mayo Academy for about 5 years, I came having never done even a lil bit of physical activity, and walked away years later having attained priceless self defense techniques, sense of confidence, toned body, weight loss and gained friendships that have turned into family. The warm environment that Guro, Sensei and the coaches have cultivated is felt immediately. They want you to succeed and show it. When they have students that comeback often simply to say hello and share in the excitement of the new students it says a lot. I am forever indebted to the Mayo Team and my Senseis for extended my family with theirs. Salamat Po!
Its been 25 years since I walked into the dojo at it s original location. Everything I learned from the Mayo academy helped prepare me for a career in both the military and law enforcement. Cant say enough about training and discipline received. Highly recommended for beginners or anyone expanding their skill set.
Mayo Martial Arts Academy ReviewI had the pleasure to meet Sonny Mayo at an FMA seminar hosted at Steve Sohn’s Krav Maga school. My Son’s Sensei, Nick, invited me. It was great training with Sonny and it was the beginning of a solid Friendship. I think the fact that we were the two bald guys in the room helped foster the relationship, 😜.Since then, Sonny has invited me to his school and I graciously accepted and came down with Nick. Great class and great sparring with Sonny and his Students. I respect the fact that everyone I sparred with took off their body armor (next time everyone can test out the light fencing masks and heavier sticks, 😈). After class, Sonny and I exchanged gifts of gratitude. Awesome Time!!!I commend Sonny for being a straight forward and open minded Instructor and Mentor. I look forward to bring my Students to his school this January so we can all cross train and spar together. Sonny will share his knowledge of Doce Pares, Nick will share Serrada Eskrima, James will share Pekiti Tirsia Kali and I will share Dog Brothers Martial Arts. We will then continue to learn by hitting each other with sticks and other weapons, hug it out and then raise a glass. While Dog Brothers Martial Arts is a system, the Dog Brothers Gathering of The Pack is open to all styles. I have met a few of Sonny’s Students who I think would be interested and are capable of demonstrating their skills in the adrenal state with the only rule being Friends at the end of the day.Cheers,Candidate Defender DogSteve SachsInstructor-Dog Brothers Martial Arts
At first I thought I had signed up for the wrong type of classes. I found them to be difficult, but as the weeks went by I was able to keep up with others. On top of that, the dojo provided a supportive community that pushed each other to reach their goals. In addition the type of workouts that they do, dont only focus on cardio, they help you build skills to protect yourself. My experience here was priceless and I will be forever grateful for the discipline and concentration that this establishment taught me. Not only did I lose weight, I gained a better sense of how to defend myself. Thank you Mayo Academy.
Ive been going for years; amazing staff, great atmosphere, lot of new people and friends to make. Great workouts to get the heart going and a lot to learn with different variations of classes ranging from Jiu-Jitsu to wrestling to kickboxing/muay thai. A highly recommendable dojo for anyone of any age!
Been going to this dojo for almost a year now, and I must say I have never been happier to be part of this small family of fighters. All the students and coaches here are very open minded and helpful with whatever you ask them, and also very strict so you dont lose your way. This place has also inspired me to a new future of one day becoming a top notch instructor myself so I can pass on the knowledge of self defense to others. They offer Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing and Doce Pares Eskrima as your options, and even have classes for kids.Highly recommended!
I love Mayo academy. I have great friends because of mayo that I love dearly. I learned how to defend myself learned great techniques, from kick boxing, jujitsu, Muay Thai, Eskrima. Best work out I ever had I truly love the sport I want to thank all my coaches at Mayo and special thanks to my Sensei Sonny and Sensei Lanie
Wonderful School! I’ve been going here for over a year now and it has been great. It’s a good school to teach your children discipline and self defense. The atmosphere is welcoming and family oriented and the sensei’s treat you like part of their family. Definitely recommend!
Great Dojo and great atmosphere to work out teaching MMA ,Muy Thai ,Karate and Doce Pares Filipino Arts. I obtained my Black Belt in Shotokan Karate from Sensei Mayo in the 1990s and made friends for life with my classmates. Sensie Mayo has been practicing and teaching Martial Arts in particular Filipino Arts for many years.
The muay thai, boxing, kickboxing, jiu jitsu and wrestling classes offered in MAYO ACADEMY are excellent!! Everyone in this gym are very sociable including instructors and students. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to get in shape or anyone who is enthusiastic about Mixed martial arts. Dont shy away and try this place out! 👍
This school is awesome! Sensei is very approachable, flexible and professional. I studied eskrima with him for a year and walked away with a ton of knowledge. Im very satisfied with him and the school. The other students were very friendly and open to teaching each other. If you are looking for a real eskrima school, this is the place.
As a former student dating back to 1995, Ill always remember fondly my training with Sensei Mayo. Him and Sensei Jason guided me through what would be my first FMA school. Swollen knuckles and forearms, and fingers that looked like sausage were the norm, as was the Mortal Kombat soundtrack (such was the curriculum back the day, dont kill me LOL). I did three years of Doce Pares and Shotokan, with a healthy respect and admiration. And when the time came for me to leave for Manila, he gave me his blessing to train with whoever I wished.Twenty years later, Im an instructor and black belt in LSAI. And although I didnt continue with Doce Pares (small presence in Manila), Senseis training methods and work ethic stayed with me. I used them myself when working with our own teams padawan learners, and in the process, added value to our own curriculum. Sensei praised me when I did well, pulled no punches for mistakes (nikkyo, the wrist should be higher than the elbow, then twist. Aray!!). As a result, Im a better person and arnisador.I would encourage anyone training with the Mayos to look for two things: One, the program and what he teaches, at the end of the day, thats why we train. And two, this is more important, HOW he teaches it. How he worked with the kids on Saturday mornings and greenhorns like myself always stayed with me. But in order to do that, you always had to be there, and he was ALWAYS THERE. I only recall a short time when he was out and a senior student took over, that was for a seminar and tourney on the West Coast. Outside of that, he led every class from the front during my time with him. Some of my best memories involve him saying, Mr. Von, please warm up the class. As a 16-year old leading a group of 20, it was a pretty big thing at the time. I imagine it still is. Whether Sensei realizes it or not, that was my first real leadership role; Empowerment without arrogance.Sonny has an open invitation to train with our group in Manila, when hes in town. And if Im ever in New York, I hope to be invited to train with one of his classes. Ill be in the back row with a white belt on, while a young buck warms us up. Sir, everyone else might call you Sonny. But I have too much affection for you and and the school, and to me, youll always be Sensei. Thank you for all that you gave me. I hope to see you soon. Pugay!
I can’t say enough good things about this place! From the motivating and caring trainers, front desk, and staff to the awesome friends I’ve made. They offer awesome classes and I cant afford to miss even a single session. They also have personal trainers. If you want to be healthier this is the place for you. Thumbs up!!
The first day that i walked into that school, I was scared but at the same time eager to learn. At the beginning it was hard but I would ask for help from the older students and they would help me with the Katas, when i need it something all i had to do was ask. I had a great a experience in that school, To sum it up into one, from day one I walked into a brand new family. Sensei and the rest of the students became my family.
I went to the Mayo academy for maybe 5 years, and it was one of the most enriching experiences of my life. I left traditional Shotokan karate because I didnt feel like it was preparing me for a fight in the real world. This dojo, however, taught it all: grappling, weapon dodging and disarming, eskrima stickfighting, and everything youd ever need to know should the unfortunate ever occur. However, what really sets this dojo apart aside from the quality of the instruction was the family feel that being part of the dojo gave you. You didnt walk into that dojo and walk out the same person; you walked out part of a community. They had sleepover parties for the children. You got to go out and celebrate birthdays together. Everyone knew everyone and that made you WANT to go every time. I stopped going once I went to college and I since moved away, and I miss them terribly. You will never regret being a part of this studio. Theres something for everyone!
I learned so much from this school! Not only that, everyone was considered family. You learn endurance and skill while being super comfortable with those around you:) I highly recommend this school if you want to have fun, work out, and want to be in a family friendly environment!
I started when I was 5 years old now I am 20 now!! This is the incredible karate dojo!!! I have had the time of my life here!! They teach disipline and respect. To not only respect others but to have respect for yourself. This dojo has tought me so many life lessons that has made me into the individual that I am today!! I would recommend this dojo to everyone!!!!
If your looking for a place that is family oriented, this is it! Sensei Sonny and Sensei Lanie are the best. They helped me and pushed me to get into shape. Never felt out of place here like I have at some gyms. If your looking for a place to loose some wieght and learn how to defend yourself, this is the place! ;)
Best place to work out. Great energy. Great work out techniques. Family orientated. Been a member for 10 years now and wouldnt trade my experience for the world. Taught me self discipline, motivation along with great self defense skills. Released alot of stress while getting a great workout. Would recommend for all ages. Just all in all love this place and the people in it.
When it comes to martial arts Schools/Academy this is one of the most authentic in New York City. The Doce Pares system encompasses the traditional and modern aspects of the martial arts. The academy represents that through their curriculum from young children to adults.
Why 4 starts because Mayo Academy help me a lot on loosing my baby weight and most importantly how to do self defense, they are very professional, honest, respectful, friendly and super fun too I get to met lots of great friends so for whoever would want to join the Mayo Academy you won’t regret it..
For me this is a place where I can interact with different people and make friends while still getting a hell of a workout. Ive been here for about three years and absolutely love coming here. Ive learn so many things here, like how to defend myself. This is a great place to learn martial arts.
Such a motivating academy . Wish I didnt have to work almost the whole week so I can make it in everyday but the days I do go I enjoy it the teachers are amazing everyone is so friendly nd helpful . I look forward into learning more these couple of months I have left . For those reading this U MOST JOIN :) promise you will love it . 💜
I enjoyed my time in this class immensely. The teachers and other staff were always very nice and extremely helpful. I learned a lot in my time there, and if I had not moved out of the area I would definitely be going to their class on a regular basis. A big thank you to everyone there.
Im honored to say I was amongst the very first students he ever taught, and proud to see how far hes come , I was given skills in my early twenties that continue to this day to shape, and mold my future, and help me be the man I am today, he has always treated all students like family no matter were they came from, and what backgrounds they had or didnt have in martial arts , he has always kept his schools immaculate in cleanliness ,and having equipment that helped in your development , his teachings helped me in developing my mental, physical, and emotional needs at the time I was growing as a Martial Artists, his commitment and dedication to his students, and their development in the Arts was always of the most important thing to him, I miss him as a student, and a dear friend , I recommend his school, and his teachings without hesitation, and hope your journey into the world of Martial Arts in his hands gives you the same beautiful experience I received when I was a student.
My son had gone to a different school before coming to Mayo MMA.From the very first day in the new school,I knew he was going to excel. He loved it,they made him fill wanted, and let him go at his speed.Every child that has gone to that school there after has felt the same way I can assure you.Not only do they teach the kids self defense but they teach them how to be a good children and respectful. They are disciplined but also know first hand how to deal with kids.My son loves going there. He has learned so much since being there from the age of 5 1/2 and now he has so much confidence.Iam so impressed with the school Ive been thinking about joining myself.I can go on and on about the school.I have grow a good friendship with the owners ,whom make it all happen. They are really 2 beautiful people who really care and show it.
Incredibly great, kind, family owned place. Whenever my son needs assistance with anything, they make sure they personally help out with whatever it is. Keep it up guys and Ill make sure were here as much as we can be. I recommend this place to anyone and their kids.
Excellent martial arts school for children and adults. My daughter of 13 and my son of 9 have more than one year in Mayo Academy and in addition to learning self defense, they have also made new friends. It is a school with a family atmosphere, where respect and harmony are breathed. Recommended 100% for any family looking for a healthy activity for their children.
My son is 11 years old and has been in the academy for four months. He learned so much in this short time. What I like about this academy is that not only does my son learn but while parents wait we have access to the gym that they have here. My son was in another academy for a year but learning was slow and here it is faster. The sensei are very friendly and when you get to class the atmosphere feels very positive. I recommend this academy 👍🏼
Our children have been in this school for 8 years. My husband and I are very happy with the teaching they have received in the dojo. Children have learned to be more disciplined and have also learned to defend themselves. It is a school where we feel safe to leave our children and know that they will be fine. Sensei Sony and Lany treat all students as their own children. It is like having a second family. They are the best 👍🏽
I am having a unique and incredible experience. I am taking the Kick Boxing class and I love it, they are all very respectful and help you with whatever you need. It is really good to take these classes since I can learn something new and that I can use myself a lot in the future.I highly recommend it !!! 🙂😊

2022-05-27Mayo Academy is great place for kids and adults to learn martial arts. Very family oriented! Our kids have been coming for about a year and have learned so much. We’ve seen them grow both personal and physical. They’ve met new friends, get a great workout and learned self-discipline and hard work. Specially during these last few months with the pandemic, it has given them something to focus on. Would highly recommend it if you’re looking for a place to work out and make lasting friendships. Great addition to the Woodhaven community!

I’m a graduate with a black belt that has been attending this academy for what i’d like to say about 3-4 years-ish.I attended by the age of 10-11 and i am now a 15 year old and i can say with full confidence that i have no regrets attending this academy and i would do it all over again.

2021-11-11I have been training with Sensei Mayo and his school for the last 4+ years, and I am duly impressed with the quality of training, the facility, and the awesomeness of the staff and students.Having trained in the multiple martial arts for several years, I can confidently say that Sensei Sonny is amongst the best instructors you will find in the country, let alone NYC. His teaching is clear and concise. You will leave each class better than when you arrived. Sensei Sonny holds himself and his students to high standards and goes the extra mile to provide top-notch instruction.Plus, he and his wife are some of the nicest people you will meet; they are genuinely caring for their students and their programs. This is more than a school; it is a community of friends and families. There are often parties and celebrations where everyone can connect and get to know each other.I am proud to consider this school as my family.

2017-06-25As one of many Senior Students of the Mayo Academy for 20 years; It is my honor to have been instructed by Sensei Sonny Mayo. My experience with Sensei and the Academy are positive and multi layered. My path to Black-Belt is full of tradition, learning self-discipline, appreciating family value and incorporating this with each competition. The quality of instruction is value by all of us who have prepared for tournaments and win or lose walked away feeling successful. Sensei Sonny Mayo and the Academy are always open to learning other Fighting Arts and Tactics. I have the highest respect for his standards and proven achievements.Sincerely, Sensei David Fernandez

2021-07-09I LOOOOVE this place!!! My son has learned so much (yes, even through the pandemic). He is very shy and very small for his age and we wanted him to feel confident in all areas and the Mayo Academy has definitely help him achieve that. He is fully engaged the whole time (trust me that is saying a lot more than I can possibly write) and is not afraid to use the techniques he learns in class. Sensei and Sensei Lanie are truly a blessing. We feel like family, everyone is so welcoming. I have taken my son to other places in the area and nothing compares, they definitely know what they are doing and how to teach it. This place is truly a gem and Im happy we found it!

2020-11-15I’m a schoolteacher who really wanted to learn a little boxing, a little kickboxing, and some basic self-defense to feel a little more comfortable and confident walking around the city. The owner of Mayo is so kind, knowledgeable, patient, and just an overall great teacher! He was very thorough and encouraging, and emphasized that as long as I stay alert when out and about, and practice the techniques he taught me at home with my husband occasionally, I would have more than a fighting chance. The lesson definitely gave me more confidence, and was a really killer workout, too! I definitely recommend Mayo Academy of Martial Arts!
