I would say this is a perfect local book store in one of my favorite NYC neighborhoods. Not only do you get the cool old neighborhood vibe but you walk into a modern fantastical book store. It’s set up extremely well and the staff is kind. There’s a reason it’s on all the lists of bookstores to visit in the city
This will always be one of my favorite book stores. The curation of books, recommendations and conversations happening are top notch and it is always one of my favorite places to stop in the city to read a book jacket, pick up Cereal Magazine or meet a friend for tea.
Book store is very nice, they also have good amount of stationary items which are expensive but you might find something really unique.Gets very crowded and cramped on the weekend.Coffee shop sharing the same place is a mice bonus, especially if you want warm up. Again be aware of not finding a seat and waiting in the line on the weekend.
Great book store! It is organized very well and its easy to find what youre looking for. Could spent hours just browsing! The staff is very helpful as well. I was asked if I needed help finding anything while browsing and the checkout staff were very efficient and nice. Will definitely return!
Absolutely love this place. Even if you come in not looking for anything in particular, you’re likely to find something that manages to pique your interest. The store is cozy, well organized, and well curated, offering magazines, books, and a small selection of stationery—the cafe that existed in the corner is now taken over by the stationery section, probably due to covid. Truly a neighborhood staple!
Cozy bookstore with a wide selection of genres to choose from. I spent a couple hours here reading some great books on history and economics. Found a favorite of mine by the great Thomas Sowell as well.Staff here are friendly and willing to help. I had one help me look for an incorrectly shelved book that I was hoping to find!I heard there used to be a cafe here, however it seems to have been converted into a stationary section of the store. Theres not too much seating unfortunately, but people come and go pretty quick, so its pretty easy to wait for one of the seats on the bottom level to open up.
I love this bookstore! They capture a sense of wonder that you don’t find in many bookstores. You can tell that their book choices are so well thought out and curated. They also have a great magazine section with a range of mainstream magazines to more under the radar magazines. They also have a cute little cafe inside and a great journals section! All around lovely and inspiring place. Best place to go if you’re in a funk and need to feel inspired by the endless possibilities of the world.
I received a gift card to this place which brought me there and I really enjoyed my time leafing through trying to decide what to leave with. The staff are exceptionally nice and helped me sift through the sheer multitude of books they carry. I felt right at home in the stacks, and they carry a large selection of international authors as well which I appreciated!
One of my favorites and true to its tagline -- independent booksellers in Soho. A cozy spot to grab a book, order a coffee, and read or just relax in the cafe, if youre lucky enough to snatch a spot. No wifi (or outlets in plain sight) so not a place to take your conference calls, but that makes it all the more special as a place to unplug and bury yourself in a new favorite novel.
I came across this place during a recent visit to NYC while walking around in SOHO. It was a real surprise to find a place like this in the middle of all the expensive brand name stores in the area. This is one of the best bookstores I have visited - great collection, well laid out and wonderful staff picks with thoughtful comments. Make sure to spend time in the basement as well.
Really nice book store. there are three levels and a very diverse selection of books. The owners are clearly making an effort to stock more than the best sellers. Make sure to head to the back and look at the translated works, as they have a fantastic international selection. Some of the selection leans more literary than consumer, but Im sure you could find something that suits your fancy. Keep in mind that there is a cafe in the front of the book store, and a calendar of great author events!
Incredibly impressed by the measures being taken by this store during covid times. The employees were helpful and made sure everyone was socially distanced. Felt very safe here and it was so nice to be back in a book store. This is one of the best ones NYC has to offer. Fantastic selection, intuitive organization, and great prices. Don’t miss your chance to shop local and support an independent book store. Love this place.
My favourite bookstore in the city! The whole shop feels very well curated, the books are displayed in an accessible manner and I really like how the literature is separated by region. They have a great, high quality stationary selection, and the staff are very friendly and helpful and knowledgable. Also the bathroom is really cool (not sure if it’s still there but it has purple lighting and quotes on the walls)
One of the best bookstores in the city. I always love checking out there windows, tables and highlights for new books. I also seem to find things here I dont see elsewhere (even other independent bookstores). Their childrens section is especially good in my opinion. Beautifully designed and gorgeously illustrated alongside mainstream popular books. I dont think Ive ever gone in and come out without buying something.Friendly, helpful and courteous staff.
A very nice and cozy bookstore situated in great area. Their selection of books is awesome - they have books not only by American and British authors but a large number of books by authors from France, Germany, Russia, Japan, Australia and many other European, Asian and African countries. There is a cafe on the first floor as well, but Ive never had anything there, so I cant say anything good or bad about it.
One of my most frequent visiting bookstores in the city. Love the staffers’ book recommendations and displays of the latest books. McNally’s selection is quite broad (no problem finding what I’m looking for), has several seating area when you’re browsing or doing light reading, and a coffee shop within the bookstore (naturally restroom too in the basement). They also hold free book signing events regularly that are fun to check out. A gem in the fun neighborhood for book shopping.
Gorgeous little book shop not too far from Soho. Its independently run bookstore with a cafe inside it. Their magazine selection is one of my favorite in the city. Definitely visit their stationery store if you visit! Its just around the corner and is a dream land for stationery nerds.Their tea and mocha is also amazing and highly recommended.
This place is a great destination for book buying, but an even greater destination for book and magazine browsing. I love their selection of special pencils and their in-house mini printing press where they actually publish literature. There are always interesting meetings going on in the lower level, Ive stumbled upon a neighborhood activism meeting, a book launch and a poetry slam, every time I come here I am always glad I stopped by.
I think they may have the most fantastic selection of books in Los Angeles. Small, but meaningful. If you want a mass-market paperback, sure, head to Vromans. But if youre looking for the obscure and the fascinating, if youre looking for outstandingly beautiful books, then I think Skylight is as good as it gets.
Independent and beautiful, this is a world renowned bookstore in the Nolita area of Lower Manhattan. We came upon it quite by chance while wandering on Prince St. Couldnt pass up the opportunity to go in and have look around. They have an impressive selection of books which are organized by nations, which i thought was quite unique. The space itself is quite cozy and welcoming. I would love the opportunity to spend more time there next time, particularly in the cafe.
Niche bookstore. Selection size is not Barnes & Nobles but it does offer a unique taste for the best sellers. Attached to bookstore is a coffee shop - never tried but theres always a crowd so its probably not bad. If you have to use the bathroom just bring a quarter with you.
I was really excited to discover this spot. A bunch of stationery choices and a ton of book selections. When I was leaving the shop, an owner or manager (I’m assuming) was walking around, barking at her employees in a pretty rude way. I don’t really agree with patronizing a shop when their employees are treated like this, so my experience was kind of soured and I ended up not purchasing anything.
I personally enjoy having a casual environment to read instead of a completely silent place. So I spend hours at this place every time. I really like the selection of books they have for every topic. One thing that would make my experience even better is having more room to sit around.
A phenomenal selection of hard to find and incredible volumes. Amazing cafe serving Parlor Coffee from Brooklyn and Colson Pastry. A diverse selection of magazines and newer pricier mag-volumes can be found here with a fab selection of NYC genes books for kids and adult alike. They also bind books as well! Long live the independents
Long story short, if youve been to the Strand, you would be doing yourself a favor if you swung by McNally Jackson at some point as well.I like most book stores. To be fair, I think a person would be hard pressed not to be able to locate at least one work that they might have an affinity towards in really any bookstore of any kind (although that may take some searching depending on the establishment). With that being said, visiting a bookstore personally can be somewhat of a stressful exercise. There are so many great novels, histories, exposes, treaties, I can feel overwhelmed and wracked by decision fatigue. Is this book the one? Is it really speaking to me? Am I missing out? However, at McNally Jackson I didnt suffer the same pitfall. I dont know what it was, but I was attracted to so many books I wanted to read, that I thought I should get, that I would be comfortable bringing home. My thoughts were not centered on whether or not I would be really satisfied with my purchase, but on the fact that there was so much material, and seeming so little time to read. It was invigorating, inspiring in fact. I got two books, two more than I thought I needed, and there are still several left that I know I need to go back for!Maybe I got lucky, but I think the store has something about it. The organization, the layout, the literally vibes throughout the air. It is a wonderfully curated shop (spanning the popular and esoteric) and I think youll find more than you bargained for, in the best of ways. Check it out.
Its a place as versatile as those who visit it. The selection is great for all ages. The bathroom is a trip. (bring a quarter to enter it!) It hangs books from authors who have visited from the ceiling like trophies. These are the writers who sat where you are reading now! You cant ask for much more except WiFi.
McNally Jackson is a real book store - the kind we need more of - quality quality quality & they maintain a great series of book release events & conversations with authors. You will not be disappointed with the staffs knowledge or the selection. They also have a small cafe now.For those of you who live in the burbs & find public transportation just too long or distant from your doorstep - you probably already know that the secret to New York driving is arrive places at 5:45 or 6:45 pm depending on the block. Prince street & surrounding blocks are not that challenging to park on if you time your arrival to 6:45 as spaces all become legal at 7:00 pm and there are also several blocks of the avenues that are legal 1 & 2 hour pay parking zones .
I walked in and they didnt greet me which okay fine. Then I ordered my coffee with my son in law and they asked my son in law if he knew what a cafe mocha was. HORRIBLE customer service for their colored customers. Dont waste your time or money in this establishment. On top that they told me that their bathroom was out of service but when a white women asked them if she could use the bathroom he gave her a key. Never going back I would suggest you dont go at all.
McNally Jacksons cafe is a really good work environment where everyone around you is focused and personally that makes me more focused, me and my friend went today and shared a large pot of tea for six dollars and they also have baked goods we worked really well there and got more done than we would have at our house and plan on going again soon. I would highly recommend going to McNally Jackson, in adition to the small cafe it is a very versatile and large book store with a kids and teen section as well. Check it out!
Quite simply THE best bookstore in NYC....forget The Strand and its snotty, snooty, ill tempered, holier than thou stooges (although, to be fair, that is mostly a relic of the past life of The Strand, which I find sad... one of the charms of old NYC that is gone is the surliness, the attitudes, the go f*ck yourself gleem in every shop keepers eye as he or she sums you up in seconds... remember Bleeker Bobs? Yeah, everyone likes to say Bob was a complete A-Hole, which he was, but EVERYBODY went there because Bob was an A-Hole), McNally Jackson is EVERYTHING you want from a real bookstore. The selections at the front as you walk in are so perfectly curated as to make you think someone was reading your thoughts. The magazine selection rivals the good old days of magazine shops that had everything under the sun from floor to ceiling (another NYC experience that is almost entirely gone); the cafe, should you be able to find a seat, is blissful and relaxing and oft times affords you a glimpse of the glitterati pictured in those very same magazines. It has one of the best art and photography selections outside of museums. Its section of staff pics is just fin dead on in terms of finding buried gems to read (yeah, youre thinking, meh, its probably just hipper than thou show off time for English majors... you would be VERY WRONG) and the comments from each staff member are not only erudite, elucidating and intelligent, they are very frequently funny and witty as well. BONUS..it has an unlocked bathroom downstairs so if you just need to pop in some place to unzip, this should be on your map (The Strand as well has free bathrooms...do NOT forget that). Staff know pretty much everything about anything so asking one of them, even if they look like they are NYU freshmen, for recommendations or opinions is always rewarding. Also, they have very frequent and very interesting guest speakers in the cafe running the gamut from new fiction authors to established authors to artists, photographers, musicians, etc. Always check their schedule to see if anything grabs your eye. This place is truly an institution in modern NYC and as with all places like it I am constantly anxious that I will cross Lafayette, pass whatever ridiculous, over-priced, Instagram-famous populated restaurant occupies the corner and see the place shuttered and a COMING SOON CITIBANK sign on the front door. I pray to whatever god controls these things that I die before McNally Jackson does. We shall see.
Sarah McNally opened this bookstore around 2004 when Amazon was putting brick and mortar bookstores out of business and everyone thought she was crazy, today its one of the few places you can go to get the best tailored book recommendations Amazon could never give you. Turns out the trick to running a bookstore is people who read. A lot. And she does.(You can find her interviews about the latest crop of books around the internet)(Cafe has no outlets and no wifi, by design)
Really horrible experience in here today thanks to the awful barista. He told me there wasn’t any hot chocolate left but served another girl straight after me a hot chocolate. Went on to uncomfortably tell me that she was there first when clearly she wasn’t. So unprofessional and clearly only serving a certain type of clientele. I live close by and will never return this to establishment after this horrible service.
Insane coffee. Insane as in strong delicious smooth without that artificially amped aftertaste. The book selection is unparalleled and every book can be judged by its cover. As in, every book is like a piece of candy. Tasty and you want more in other flavors.Except the disgust mechanism that activates after ten or twenty pieces of candy is less likely, since these are books, and novel, pardon the pun.The sections are labeled thoughtfully. Quality rules over quantity, since quantity is not necessary to provide the illusion of quality. As for style over substance, I cant vouch for everything. The basic guarantee I can make is, this is the place to get a cool, clever, stylish, seemingly or actually substantive present for everyone, whether they dislike books or own three editions of Prousts...yknow what Im saying. So you (from my observation and experience) will probably spend more than you bargained for, or will be glad youre rich enough to kill off your Christmas list in one go in a matter of minutes. They have cute pens. Although I wish there wasnt so much plastic involved. The pastries are not too sugary not on anything yet overwhelming the senses nonetheless. I think from Balthazar? They have good readings too but usually packed. I regret running away from the launch of the 4 hour workweek because that would have been cool to meet Tim Ferris before he became...yknow what I mean.McNally is nearly the platonic ideal of bookstores.P.s. Bring quarters for the bathroom. I think thats a reasonable charge and less demeaning than having to bother someone for a key.
Saddened me that the store wont bother to invest in a ramp so us wheelchair users can come in. Ive asked several times and the workers have just said they dont have one..didnt even pretend they would ask the manager. clearly there is no interest in. disabled folks civil right to access.
They have their own book printing press, (One of the VERY FEW remaining operational to the public in Manhattanso if they do not have what you are looking for in store...they can rapidly check their impressive digital and printable collection (I assume). I have had people purchase me books after talking about literature, current events, Star Wars, just a wide range of subject matter really...

2021-08-19Beautifully layed out bookshop. Friendly staff. There are plenty of fabulous books to choose from. Two level of books but they also sell various things. Look up when you’re there to admire the hanging books. Check this place out when you are in the Soho area!

2022-03-11Beautiful aesthetic, and there is even a cafe inside! most of the stationary is on the first floor, but the basement is where they keep all the good stuff. sci-fi (my personal favorite), political nonfiction, horror, LGBTQ, race theory, graphic novels, poetry, thriller, the list goes on and on. you name it, they’ve got it.

2022-07-14This bookstore is like an amazing hidden secret of a place. Its 2 floors, with a coffeeshop in it, and a lot of character. I can usually find something interesting whenever I stop by because they have a really good selection of books curated in the table islands

2021-03-05This is by far my favorite book store in NYC. There’s SO much thought put into the layout of the store. There are so many highlighted books from staff recommendations. They also do a really good job of highlighting different genres (new in metaphysics?? Incredible) to try and get people out of their reading comfort zone. They have a pretty big bargain section which is great and a very nice card and journal section in addition to their amazing book selection!

2022-07-16Perhaps I am speaking soon too soon but, I think I found my favourite bookstore in New York. So many variety of books and stacks upon stacks of books shelves with reader’s favourites and hidden gems. It wasn’t too busy, a nice hideaway from the bustle of nyc, so I had a lot of room to amble around and had a wonderful time browsing the books.

2022-07-25Great little bookshop with a fine range covering NYC local and national USA, Middle Eastern and European fiction, and hobbies. And in this heat, pretty good aircon too! Worth a visit and highly recommended.

2019-12-30THE bookstore in NYC, IMO. You can lose yourself in here for a long, long time. The selection is both current and esoteric. They have well-chosen selection for so many topics - art, film, lit, fiction, kids. Also theres a wonderful double rack of hard to find periodicals. ( I could spend an hour at that, easily).I guarantee you will find something that will surprise and delight in this bookstore!Prices are fine. They also have a big sale selection downstairs and in kiosks out front.Theres a little coffee shop / cafe in one corner of the store. Perfect spot to get out of the crush of Soho. Small bites and coffees.Staff in this store is super helpful and very nice.

2021-06-08One of my favorite bookstores of all time. Curated and presented beautifully; clearly created by people who truly love books. Unfortunately since Covid the cafe is no longer there but it may be reopened outdoors in the future according to the staff. Highly recommended as a place for any reader to enjoy (plus they have wonderful stationery and other gift items).
