I was recommended by a co-worker and it didn’t disappoint. They have the best coffee in NYC. My wife loves their Mexican coffee beans and espresso chocolate beans as well. I only tried one of their teas, Assam, which I use to make masala chai at home. The staff are polite and they know their stuff if you have any questions.
I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to write a review for McNultys. I come all the way from Brooklyn to buy from them! I absolutely love them. I remember the first time I found them, I thought it embodied what NY was all about—old charm. Dimly lit, family owned, and no fuss coffee and tea. I’ve gotten many bags of coffees here, all delightful and comparable to third wave coffees. One of my favorites is the “Scandinavian” whole bean. Very delicious medium body morning coffee! Also have purchased lovely Chinese pu-erh tea here with great success. The process of how they weigh and air the beans is just lovely. Whenever friends or family come in town I always want to bring them here in hopes they fall in love with the charm.Edit: there are many reviewers on here reviewing the wrong establishment! This is not a sit down cafe that serves pastries! How can Google remove these??
Such a unique tea experience! A cramped shop with tea overflowing the shelves. Staff was quiet but kind and incredibly knowledgeable. They answered my questions and then measured out my desired tea from its massive jar using this old-school metallic scale. Tea was enjoyed later and I can attest to its quality. Must visit if in the area & you’re a tea lover.
My fiancée usually comes into the store in person but with Covid, I decided to do a large tea order online. They shipped my order same day. So fast, always good quality, and competitive loose leaf tea prices. They are great! Please support this NYC historic institution!
I havent try this tea yet but I hope is good :) the place is small but it has an extense variety of teas and an interesting line of coffees, it was a bit pack which mean the place has clientele.I bought Honduran coffee since Im from there and I miss my coffee. Looking forward to try my coffee 😊
World famous tea shop in business since 1895. Huge variety of tea, everything is straight off the tea farm fresh. Staff knows everything you’ve ever wondered about tea. This place is just fantastic and one of those New York institutions that can never be replicated anywhere. They also have a great coffee selection and sell a wide variety of accessories. Note that they do not sell coffee or tea by the cup.
We have been buying our #coffee for #gaggia #espresso #chemex here for years; great selections for any flavor preferences and origins. ☕️. Love this neighborhood gem❣️. Also always take our friends from out-of-town; a good friend visited always ask for chocolate-covered hazelnuts and their hazelnut coffee❣️❣️
This is one of New York City’s unique coffee & tea shops that is well worth visiting and if you are fortunate enough to live near Christopher Street, a great place to buy all your caffeinated supplies! In addition to coffees and teas from around the world they also sell coffee makers and tea pots as well as delicious chocolates!
This place is incredible. Old school charm and great service. The staff are friendly, knowledgable and helpful. Im a huge tea drinker and my husband loves coffee -- its our one stop shop for all morning beverages! For black tea loves, ask for the the McNultys Cafe Blend - its like candy in a tea cup. Their Earl Grey and Vanilla are also delicious.
I went there looking for some good loose leaf tea for a gift. The selection of teas was great, the employee (or was he the owner? I don’t know) was very helpful and knowledgeable. And the atmosphere, the smell, my god, walking in felt like I traveled back in time, somewhere in old Hong Kong or something. Overall a great experience. I found everything I wanted.
Update 12/17 - Ive been a customer for probably 25 years, and they never cease to amaze. With NYC in the condition its in, I ordered online yesterday afternoon.. The order was delivered this morning. Granted, Im in Westchester, but next day . . . that is some speedy service. Thank you!Heaven for tea and coffee lovers. Dizzying number of choices. Love their custom blend coffees - special mocha java and McNultys especially. Friendly guys - David, Wing, and Tom especially. But the coming generation, too. Like going back in time to be in their shop
I have been going to McNultys since I was a teenager and there isnt a tea shop around Id rather go to!! They have the best selection of teas and coffees, an incredibly helpful staff, and amazingly low prices. I have ordered online to ship items to family members and everything always arrived in perfect condition. My personal favorites: green tea with peach, elderberry, chocolate black tea, extra fine Jasmine, stir fried green tea, and the gorgeous downy pearls. I dont drink coffee but my family and friends have loved their dark roasts from all over the world!
I have loved their coffee for decades. Rather disappointed today when, having spent more on shipping than the cost of 1lb of chocolate covered expresso beans, they arrived as a melted slab of chocolate. Their response when I called to ask about UPS was, we normally dont ship that stuff during the summer.... Thanks for warning me!
Owner and workers were super welcoming, helpful, and nice. They had a very wide selection of teas and coffees. I went in planning on getting a pound of Kona, and came out with a bunch of other teas as well. Highly recommend to everyone, theyve certainly made me a loyal customer!!
You can get a fantastic smell of coffee from outside and this family-run shop is a treasure trove of coffee and teas. The gentleman who helped me knows his stock very well and was able to make recommendations for all of my specificities (roast, origin, astringency, etc.). Great place to get gourmand gifts!P.S. I’ve never seen such a large collection of whole-bean decaf, even better that it’s Swiss Water!
Havent had a chance to try the teas yet but I must already give 5 stars just for how kind and friendly the staff are. I had an entire list and everything was available. The prices are reasonable. Also can I just bottle up the amazing aroma in the shop? Ill definitely come back.
An amazing old world coffee and tea haunt. The smell in the store is also wonderful. They sell bagged tea, but the emphasis is on the incredible selection of loose leaf teas that are sold by weight. They also sell coffee from all over the world, which you can purchase as whole beans or have ground on the spot. Lean on the stores knowledgable staff to help you find varieties that match your tastes! Ive really enjoyed everything Ive ever bought from this store.
This is my favorite tea shop in NYC. Ive been coming here for years now. The loose leaf teas are reasonably priced. Youre looking at the whole range of teas, from $ to $$$. Its a great place to buy 1/4 lb of different teas to try things out at home. Im not sure about the coffee, but Ive once encountered a couple that comes here regularly from upstate, just to stock up on coffee. So that says something good about it.As for the service, theyre an excellent NYC establishment. Theres another review that said the service was terrible, but I strongly disagree. If youre looking for a white glove establishment that will wait on you hand and foot the moment you walk in, this is not the place (maybe try Te Company). If youre looking for a place that lets you shop, smell, and peruse in peace first (then follow up with help when youre ready), this is the place. This is absolutely my preferred tea shop for the variety, knowledge of staff, and atmosphere. Its relaxing and no fuss but with the high quality tea Ive learned to love and enjoy.
There arent many stores like McNultys in the world, certainly not over 100 years old. I cant begin to imagine how many varieties of loose leaf tea they have or whole bean coffee, which is blended and ground to order. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, and can speak to every product they sell. I cant recommend McNultys enough.Addition: ordering online is very easy, and the staff is very responsive to the contact us emails if you mix up the bill to ship to addresses for gifts and and forget to specify the correct grind for each coffee you order. I speak from experience.
Amazing little tea and coffee shop with all kinds of rare and hard-to-find varieties. Prices are higher than what youd see at a grocery store but not outrageous at all. Also, the quality is out of this world, the staff very friendly and knowledgeable, and the selection is wide enough for everyone to find something. The smells alone from walking into the shop will convince you to shop nowhere else.
McNultys is absolutely amazing. Its an old fashioned sytle coffee shop that feels incredible to walk into, they have a HUGE selection of coffee and loose teas sold by weight, as little or as much as you want. They grind your coffee right there and have a great selection of tea already in bags. I am currently living in Boston and this is one of the places I miss most in NYC!
McNulty’s has such a deep collection of coffees and teas and the employees gave me answers to every question I had. Their prices are very reasonable and their coffee is superb. We bought a quarter pound of freshly ground Sumatra and Vanilla and they’ve produced some of the best cups of coffee I’ve brewed. I’d highly recommend going to McNulty’s to learn about coffee and tea and the best way to make a cup at home.
Love this tea shop. They have everything you could ever want in a tea and coffee store. It smells amazing and it feels like stepping back in time when you go inside. The prices are really good for the quality of the tea. I havent tried the coffee actually but my guess is its just as fine as the tea.
Just an incredible place, that goes back to a very different New York. Best selection of loose teas, tea accessories, and fine tea tins Ive ever seen. Great selection of scores of whole bean arabica coffees from all over the world at variety of roast types, fair trades and organic designations, and some varieties which are fairly rare. Its also the best smelling store in New York, if not the East Coast.
McNaultys has by far the best tea selection Ive come across. They weigh it out, and sell it by the quarter pound. Most are loose leaf selections with some bagged tea selections. The loose leaf selections are broad and includes a lot of my hard to find teas from my time living in China. Run by a Chinese father and son, and all other staff is helpful and makes suggestions of things to try if you want, per your regular purchases. Good coffee selection too, however I tend to go for their teas.
Its like taking a step back in time before cvs and citibank were on every block. This place is small and may as well be magic. Heck they may sell magic wands and potions in the back. I grabbed two of the house made teas and its kind of nuts that I actually saved money vs getting a box of mass produced tea in a store. Overall great place and great service. They let me roam around while I was deciding and made a great recommendation as well when I was ready to get something. They also sell coffee which I didnt need at the time but may go back in to try.
A friend introduced me to McNultys about this time last year, as we are both avid tea drinkers. My first visit to the store was like a kid in the candy shop, I was overwhelmed by the sheer variety and volume of tea, and how they let you take a whiff of all of it before you buy. I have yet to get a tea from them I havent loved. When Covid hit and the world stopped, McNulty announcing it would continue business online was a light at the end of the tunnel. My first online ordering experience was smooth and my delivery came within a week, as promised. I admit I was a bit taken aback by the delivery cost at first but it is what it is. Yesterday I placed another order with McNultys, and chose the most basic shipping option. I dont know what elves or fairies they employ, but the order made its way to my door in Jersey in less 24 hours. I cant promise this experience for anyone else but I am taking this as a sign from God that all my tea needs shall be met by McNultys until I kick the bucket.
The smell you receive when you walk through the doors is a sign of the quality of the teas and coffees in this tiny tea shop in the west village. Not very expensive and extremely high quality of teas. Worth a visit just to stick your nose in some of their teas and get a whiff. I purchased enough tea for 50 cups of tea and only spent 10 dollars. Amazing tea shop and coffee store.
That was my first time at that store. Nice, but 2 blends of fruit tea that I bought had some kind of medicinal sub taste that I wasnt getting when I smelled them in store, so I assumed it might be the packaging, but three green tea blends that I got are quite good, although slightly overpriced (well, thats Manhattan). I probably will give it another shot. I live in Brooklyn so travailing there is a bit time consuming.
Came here to try out the coffee since I heard the place was good. I tried the mocha with chilli and it was great. It had a nice spicy tang that wasnt overly spicy. The place is quite nice too. I was able to find sitting which was nice because I came at a relatively busy time. The barista was also helpful with recommendations. I would definitely return.
This place rocks. An independent coffee shop. Fresh in house made pastries everyday. FREE WIFI. A pleasant place to relax, check out the original artwork, enjoy a great cup of fair trade coffee. I overheard a comment. This is the best latte I ever had. This may just become my go to place to chill and enjoy a Coffee in Uptown!
Mecca if youre a coffee or tea lover! (So, just about anyone.) This store smells wonderful, and the coffee (or tea) that you choose is measured out carefully and lovingly. They will answer any questions that you have and make recommendations if youre unsure about what type to get. Its always a treat to come here, and if youre lucky enough to live nearby, dont buy your coffee anyplace else.
I drink A LOT of tea. Im talking at least eight cups a day. I knew when I came home to visit, I needed tea and so I decided to check this place out since it was close to where I was staying. Im trying not to be too provincial about my rating, because its clear to me that New Yorkers pay a lot more for fresh loose leaf than Im accustomed to paying in other parts of the country. But when you get past that part, its a nice enough place with a large selection of teas. The system is somewhat inefficient. You come in, theres a long line (when I came in) and then someone goes to fetch your tea for you once its your turn to order. Its efficient in a sense and everyone is polite enough, but its a bit clunky if youve been to any other kind of tea store in a (less populated) different place. So I guess the verdict is, its nice enough. But a bit on the pricey side and if youre a newcomer to loose-leaf tea looking for a selection, this is probably not the first place Id recommend because its daunting and not especially inviting. But for my purposes, it got the job done. Especially if you need loose-leaf tea and are staying in Jersey, because its literally a block from the PATH. (Theres also Indian and Thai across the street. An extra treat!)
Like stepping into the past. The small shop has to be experienced. We were helped by the owner and made to feel like we were old customers. The coffee was tremendous and though we dont live near enough to frequent, we will be buying over the web. This is a dry goods store, they do not sell prepared coffee or tea.
A great family own and operated shop. This place will make you fall in love with New York all over again. Oh, you better love coffee before moving here. If you dont, expect plenty of side eye and prepare to have all your opinions dismissed. Not to fret, this long time shop will help you on your way to becoming a proud continence coffee lover. You must have this brown liquid pumping through your veins all day, everyday, especially, if you want to survive this town with any resemblance of your former sanity intact.I come here for the smell. If you see me here standing with my eyes closed and breathing deeply, do not interrupt me. I will Mick Jagger you. And dont even ask me what that means.
Its not a far cry to say its one of my favorite coffees in the city. Beans are great ( Temple ) & truth be told, Im addicted to their butterscotch latte - 1/2 sweet, with almond milk, and every time - they deliver with a smile. All of them, which is a fin rarity these days. The coffee isnt the only thing thats warm here :) I just moved closer to the neighborhood and couldnt be happier to start my mornings/kick start my afternoons with one of their bevs.
My absolute go-to for bulk buying teas from around the world. Since there are so many variations to choose from, whats best is that the teas are in large glass jars, allowing you to look and smell at your leisure before committing. The owners are the nicest ever, and I love the old-timey scale and packaging equipment used. Service with a genuine smile!
Walking in here you feel like youre stepping back in time. The selection us amazing. Literally every available inch is taken up with amazing coffees and teas. And, the service and prices are great as well. This is a great little piece of old New York and I hope it stays around for many, many years to come.
Dont believe the review on here that says free WIFI and good pastries; this is not a coffee shop at which you consume products. They sell beans and loose tea. And for that, they are PERFECT. Extensive selection, top quality, just a wonderful local business. Hibiscus 4ever.
While I generally prefer to go to Porto Rico for coffee beans, McNultys provides a better shopping experience (never crowded and always helpful) and their tea selection is fantastic, bridging the plain East Asian teas and European-style blended teas, both loose and in tins.
Every possible coffee bean is available from anywhere in the world. Coffees from Ethiopia, Hawaii, Jamaica, Turkey, you name it, they got it. Many uncommon and rare teas can be found here. Friendly service and ground to order. Just the smell of freshly ground coffee makes you want to come back again and again. Near number 1 subway and the PATH. Will that be one or two lumps?
I love this place and go every time I am back in town. The selection is great and you can pop the lid on the glass jars to get a whiff, just remember to put it right back! The staff is knowledgeable and can answer any questions or help with recommendations if you dont know quite what you want or what you are looking for.
Best selection of every type of tea your little heart could possibly yearn for AND the best pricing in the entire 5 boroughs. Forget T2 (they should have stayed in Australia and called it a day -- $13 for a little bag of tea, give me a break! PASS!)Dont know what I would do without McNultys...second best place in the entire city of New York for tea is Fairway.Check it out -- you are sure to be pleased.
Anyone saying this place is expensive doesnt know anything about weights and prices, and math in general. This place lists their prices starting at 1/4lb (or 0.25lb). 1/4lb=4oz. Thats actually a lot of tea. The most Ive seen their pricing go for is 1/4lb of tea for $10.Compare this to Davids Tea. Davids Tea has their pricing start at ~$11 for 2oz of tea. 2oz is their starting weight at Davids Tea. 2oz =1/8lb.....which is significantly less than 1/4lb. Doing some math, 4oz (or 1/4lb) at Davids Tea is gonna cost you twice as much as this place. So people saying this McNultys is expensive af, are actually retarded with math and need to go back to elementary school. Also, the quality of tea here, is better. I can get multiple steeps out of my tea. With Davids Tea, I could only steep once and go through tea (and money) faster.
Disgusting lack of service! Two employees (two middle aged men) working inside this shop, not a single customer inside. We walked in, both employees looked at us, and said nothing and turned their backs to us. Yikes. We left immediately. Too pretentious for our intended purchase of $100+ ; we found a significantly friendlier, better quality shop down a few blocks anyway.
I stumbled across it by accident but its a lovely little shop with an amazing amount of choice. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. It is actually quite reasonably priced too, given its a specialist. If Im ever back in town Ill be sure to visit again.

2022-06-18Staff is extremely helpful, knowledgeable, polite and attentive. Wonderful selection of mostly loose tea. This trip I got Irish Style and also Gunpowder Tea and they were both delicious. Prices are great and actually compare favorably to supermarket teas, where you spend a lot on packaging and tea bags. A simple tea ball goes for $4.

2022-07-14Went here to pick out some special coffees and teas for part of my friends wedding gift. I drink coffee and tea all the time so I was excited to see this place. I wasnt sure what flavors of each to get as a gift (they had soooo many) but the person behind the counter was extremely helpful in pointing out popular flavors depending on roast/tea style. As someone who was upset after moving to NY that I would no longer be able to go back to the tea and coffee shop in my old state, Im extremely happy I found this place. I will definitely frequent this shop to restock my own coffees and teas in the future!!

2022-03-21This place has an expansive selection of teas and coffees. The teas can be found in large, clear, glass jars, behind the counter you can find all manner of coffee brewing devices in various sizes and the place is reminiscent of an old time general store. With an atmosphere that is set back in time, the prices wont send you into shock.

2022-08-10They do seem to have an extensive collection of teas. However, the quality of teas is poor. I am a tea aficionado and I can tell good tea from bad. Either they gave me really old tea or a poor quality one because it was definitely not what I requested. Happened twice and I do not buy from here anymore. If you know nothing about tea, then yes, go ahead and drink whatever they give ya!
