Fast, polite and helpful! Secured 4x4 plywood in a pinch.
This place is WAY better to go to than other of big box hardware for cutting custom shelving. They have higher end wood you can paint or white plywood like IKEA uses. You call in your dimensions and they consult with you for free to solve your project questions. Go to place in NY!
What an experience!!! Oye!!! Just went to Mikes today for the first time. After placing and paying for my order I was told that the guy cutting the lumber was out to lunch and wouldnt be back for an hour. When he did come back he was still out to lunch figuratively but not literally. I needed one cut on a 8 x 1 x 3 and a 40 shelf. It only took 90 minutes. I could have done it faster by hand .Next time Ill go elsewhere.
Mikes is a neighborhood lumber yard/hardware store just dropped in the middle of the UWS...how convenient is that. The staff is actually knowledgeable and, usually, on the pleasant side of surly. To respond empathetically to Fran, they are just like the local hardware/lumberyard youll find all over the country - youll get what you need the first time but in their own time. Contractors, rightly, take priority over do-it-youselfers.
I needed something specific and quick, and they delivered! Love it! Recommend this place!

Initially, the staff was a pleasure to work with. But there was a miscommunication about the product I ordered and when I approached them about possible solutions, they were unwilling to work with me.

2022-05-26I had a number of pieces of ply cut to size by Mikes. They were very clean cuts, and provided quickly (next day). One piece was 1/2” off, the others were perfect. I also did not check when picking up, so would recommend that. In the end, I felt their price was so competitive and the process so easy that I will take 1/2” off every now and then, no problem. I will definitely be using them again.

2020-07-08This company was AMAZING!! I had 2 made-to-measure floor to ceiling bookcases built and installed. What a life changer! They were so professional and lovely to deal with it. I would infinitely recommend them for anything!

2021-10-12Highly recommend this place to buy wood boards/planks. I am doing renovations in my home office and needed shelves and a desk. Super fast service, ordered and got them next day, the quality of the cuts is great. And the prices are really affordable. Stop by and check out all the things they have (nails, clamps, etc).Thanks!

2022-01-02Went in here and had a little project to do. The staff was busy but they still took the time to calmly talk me through what I needed and some potential issues I might face. I wasn’t a huge customer for them but they treated me as one and I really appreciate it. Going into places like this can be intimidating but they made it easy. Will be going back for future projects!!

2021-09-24What a find! Professional work for EXTREMELY reasonable prices. First used them to cut replacement moldings for renovation of our hallway and was really happy with their work. Most recently, we needed to replace a broken strip of wood on an antique bureau that was one of a pair attaching a relatively heavy mirror to the cabinet. I brought Mikes Lumber the remaining intact strip and asked them for a mirror image (including the drill holes). I picked up the perfectly sized replacement strip the next day - and its now installed on the bureau (everything matched up perfectly).

2021-06-07AMAZING doesnt describe the store, the people who work there or their services.I have used Mikes Lumber & Hardware twice this past year, and will probably be using them again in the future.Imagine and old-timey hardware and lumber yard placed inside a small NYC building, and you have Mikes.Everyone who works there is extremely knowledgeable, patient and understands what an average New Yorker needs to fix up their place.They also have a brisk commercial business -- I know from having watched the professionals come in and buy stuff.Their prices are reasonable, and they will cut wood while you wait. They also have a fantastic selection of nails and other things....can you tell that Im not a DIY person?Love them! Love the fact that theyre super patient, kind and dont talk down to you if youre confused and trying to explain what you need.

2016-08-16Super experience at Mikes Lumber!!So glad they are on the UWS in a convenient location. The guys were very helpful and accommodating...my piece was cut to precision, and quickly. After a short time in the shop, I bought some anchors while waiting. Then I decided to go for a walk while the wood was being cut. I took about 10 paces, and out comes one of the awesome guys calling out to me, wood in hand... Great customer service and flexibility!!!

2019-04-27I needed some planks of wood for floating shelves. I already have the brackets, I showed a picture to the guy there, and they said no problem, they could cut the planks and drill holes into the wood to mount the shelves. They were able to supply the shelves after I already paid them, but they then told me they can’t drill the holes, although they could sell me a bunch of equipment so I could drill the holes myself. And they couldn’t offer any advice on how to help. I mean, I asked a lumber and hardware store to put some holes into wooden planks. This store is only good if you need raw materials, but unfortunately their customer service is terrible.

2019-04-12We had a terrible experience with Mikes Lumber. we bought a $650 dresser which we had painted black. The paint shipped within one week of use. In addition the units drawers are rickety and have cheap plastic tracks. When we complained, they asked for additional money to change them to better quality tracks.They refused to refund us or build us a better quality dresser. Worst customer service ever.AVOID THEM AT ALL COSTS

2020-08-03I am a photographer living in Manhattan. I decided to have extensive shelving built in an effort to organize my prints. I contacted Mikes Lumber and spoke with Joe. With Joes help we drew up plans for the shelving units - which they built - and the end result is a gorgeous, well-made unit that fits in our apartment as planned and beautifully stores my archive.
