Sat down for a some dumplings this past week and they were absolutely incredible. I had the traditional pork pan fried, they were moist flavorful and amazingly fresh! The special sause with them was so good! The best part of the meal was the November dumpling, a Thanksgiving dumpling! This was by far the best dumpling I have ever had! I am usually not a fan of cranberry sauce, but this stuff pulled the whole dumpling together and made it even better!! I will most certainly be back!
The service can be disorganized and slow at times. It took 30 minutes for my dumplings to be served the last time I went. The dan-dan noodles are okay at best. Its interesting that they use soba noodles. I think it works, but definitely different than your usual dan-dan noodles. The dumplings were good, not great. Overpriced compared to Vanessas nearby. Mimi Chengs dumpling skins are thinner than average Chinese dumplings.Overall, a place worth visiting once or twice. Would not become a regular here.
I had the signature dumplings, juicy and hot! The spicy dan dan noodle is way too spicy, can’t taste any other flavour such as sesame oil and peanut sauce. The 12 hour organic chicken soup is a bit disappointing, doesn’t taste chicken soup really...tastes more like carrots and corn soup.
Nice ambience, cute little place.Service was friendly! However, most importantly food was quite average. We got chicken and vegan dumplings, did 50/50 with them and got them fried.Chicken was ok, veg wasn’t bad. They have some special sauce which was good and made dumplings eatable.Dumplings themselves could have been much more flavourful! Not a lot of options to choose from. We’ve had way better dumplings in NYC.Got their house made iced raspberry tea, which was mediocre.Prices were fair though.Would not come all the way for their dumplings!
Dumpling time on this beautiful Monday day, so glad they have a 2nd Ave spot... todays munch is the Mimi Chengs dumplings- (steamed) organic chicken & zucchini . These fresh made lovelys were tasty and delicious and never hada chance. 2nd pic is the Reinvented Classic- (fried) pasture-raised pork, baby bok choy & cabbage. One of favorites, fried nicely giving these dumplings a perfect sear on one side. Of course one can not eat these dumplings without the secret sauce, Mimi Chengs Secret Sauce has a nice little kick and makes the dumplings even better.....must have on them....
Pros: takes credit and debit.Cons:- Youll need at least 40 minutes for the food. So this is not a quick lunch spot if you have 30 minutes (this was for takeout).- pricier than the nearby dumpling places with the same comparable taste and greasiness (not accounting for the ingredient quality differences)I would not return solely because I dont want to wait so long for something that only takes at most 10 minutes to eat. Just easier to have cash on hand and get it quickly somewhere else.
KEY POINTS: DO NOT BE FOOLED BY PHOTOS & FOOD MADE ME SICK! PLACE IS EMPTY FOR A REASONSo I visited this place when it first opened in 2016 and it was delicious. I had the pork/ chive and vegetable dumplings. I havent been back since until yesterday. I ordered the pork/chive dumplings and the Spicy Dan Dan noodles. The noodles were honestly the blandest thing Ive ever tasted. I think if I made them at home with some butter it wouldve had more flavor. They were smothered in oil and had absolutely no flavor (zero hints of garlic) just some heat. I had to ask for soy sauce to add in because it was truly not appetizing. The dumplings were too fried one the signature side and didnt get to be fully cook within. I am writing this review because I truly regret not telling them right away that the food was so awful for the $26 that I paid. I was starving and looking forward to eating here again and after seeing how expensive the menu was, I just finished the dumplings and threw away the noodles. I am not a reviewer. I never leave good or bad reviews. But I felt I needed to warn any new comers to this specific location because it was truly expensive for what you receive, it doesnt taste good, and I swear it made my stomach sick. Its the following day and I cant stop visiting the bathroom! Do not be fooled by the photos or presentation online!
Honestly, I had higher expectationsDont get me wrong, their dumplings are really goodSo is the secret sauceBut its just too priceyYou can get the same for like halfThe staff was not in a good mood, at least the time I wentIs a very tiny establishmentStill, if you wanna try them, just one advice8 is enoughMaybe 12But I thought 14 were a good number and nope, too much food
This was already one of my favorite places in a sea of phenomenal restaurants throughout the city. However, my love for Mimi Chengs skyrocketed today! I was volunteering at the Bowery Mission in the Lower Eastside and at the end of the shift a copious amount of food, to say the least, from MCs had apparently been donated. I immediately exclaimed to the Bowery staff that this place was absolutely phenomenal and what a treasure to receive such a donation. Now that I know that these sisters give back to the community in such an incredibly generous and humbling way I will certainly be eating plenty more of their dumplings in the near future! YOU GO GALS!
Ordered delivery via Caviar via DoorDash. Ordered 2x bone broth with chicken meatballs and 1x greens side. Order arrived promptly but in complete mess. Delivery driver asked me to take the items out of the DoorDash issue insulated box because broth had leaked through the paper containers which had dissolved during transport and broke through the restaurants paper to-go bag. Fun. A bunch of the soup was gone since the tops of the containers were mush so the containers were sitting in a pile of broth. Poured soup into bowls to serve but soup was so salty I could not swallow it. Thanks, wont order again.
Edit: I have gone back and had a very different experience. Im going to call my initial visit a fluke. It happens. The dumplings I had the second time were excellent, among the best Ive had in the city. I will leave my original review below, but please do not put any stock in it.Disappointing. The dumplings would have been good were they not extremely salty. That combined with a pretty high price makes me unable to recommend Mimi Chengs.
I cant recommend Mimi Chengs highly enough when it comes to dumplings. Their monthly specials are phenomenal but you also wont be disappointed by the default dumpling and the smashed cucumbers. During the lockdown this was one of the places I went out of my way to visit because I was craving their special sauce!
The 5 star reviewers have failed me once again, I did not receive the quality of food everyone has been describing. I order 8 fried dumplings, a 12 hour chicken soup and Dan Dan noodles which I did not receive and after my second attempt of going back into the store to ask I gave up because I didnt ask for a receipt and I didnt want to cause any trouble but the total I was charged didnt add up. Anyway my favorite food is soup and dumplings so I had high expectations because of the reviews but the food was not my taste. I do have to say though, I love to support these hard working business and the cashier was very sweet also. Thank you!
Honestly, not great. Cute interior, clean design. Now to the important part, the dumplings. I’d give them a solid 4/10. They didn’t taste bad, they were just way overpriced for what they are. there are much better tasting dumplings for much cheaper and that come in greater quantity at many other spots. Almost $12 for for 8 dumplings? Come on! It seems to me like a trendy recreation of the dirty hole-in-the-wall spots to be more ‘palatable’ for certain groups of people.I’ll recommend two other places:- Vanessa’s dumplings, multiple locations- fried dumpling on Mott street
Its ok. They need to clean this place up though.Edit: Ok, so I was a little hard on this place when I reviewed it a month ago and gave it 2/5 stars. I ate here today and honestly, its not that bad. The scallion pancakes are good but not the best Ive ever had. The customer service is ok...The hygiene is not that bad. I got 4 scallion pancakes for $7.62 (including tax) - DEFINITELY overpriced if you ask me. Im going to now give it 3/5 stars. This place just is not that good. BTW they only accept card, NO cash.
This place is very cool. The food is local and fresh and healthy and simple. The menu is minimal in the best way: 3-4 kinds of dumplings, one of which is seasonal, and a vegetable. I got the chicken and pork dumplings, they were good. I also got the broccoli sauteed with garlic, also good. Its not the cheapest lunch, but its not bad. I paid $15 for the 8 dumplings a nice portion of broccoli. My only issue, and the reason I cant give them 5 stars, is that dumplings to me are cheap, fried in some kind of re-used oil, and contain not-so quality meat with a lot of salt and chives. Theyre delicious. These dumplings lack the grease and salty flavor I crave when I crave dumplings. Theyre good, but I dont think I would order plate after plate here like I would at Vanessas Dumplings up the street.
Cute little place in the East Village, we were looking for a quick and tasty lunch and read about this. We got the 50-50 dumplings and a noodle soup. The soup was not really flavorful but at least the noodles were cooked nicely. The dumplings were pretty tasty and I really liked their special homemade sauce. Overall, I would say that this is the low-end Chinese food designed to appeal to yuppies. Price is too high for what it actually is. Nice room though.
Absolutely the tastiest dumplings around. I LOVE Mimis. The quality of their meats + veggies is superb! I also just love all the friendly workers + the cozy feeling of this place. Marian and Hannah are also the BEST owners. I love these ladies and they truly encompass what it means to be passionate. Please check out Mimis, you wont be disappointed!!
We ended up here after our first aborted attempt to go to Tim Ho Wan on a weekend - 4 hour wait - no thanks! This is a bare bones counter service place where youre served lots of different dumplings, along with some special sauce. The dumplings are well done and with thin skins. Certainly a lot better than most Chinese restaurants Ive been too. They are at a premium though. Theres some seating but you can always have it to go.
Great ambiance and good dumplings. It may not be the best dumpling Ive ever had, but this restaurant is lovely, the service was great and socially conscious. I ordered the February special which donated partial proceeds to City Harvest (NYC food rescue non profit). Keep up the good work Mimi Chengs!
A beautiful, vibrant spring evening in the E. Village, but the worst idea for a casual post-movie snack/supper ever. Considering there are only a few items on the menu, you would think it would be a relatively simple thing to serve an okay dumpling. Ordered: Combo Mimi Cheng & Reinvented Classic Dumplings - Fried, as recommended by Infatuation. This was the worst plate of dumplings I have ever had. Ive had far better dumplings from Trader Joes frozen aisle. While the fillings seemed okay, the dumplings were served burnt, and were oddly gummy underneath -- very unappetizing and not nearly as cheap as they should have been. Their house special sauce was bland and the least special dumpling sauce Ive ever had. Critics please update your reviews! All should avoid this waste of space. If you cant make it to Chinatown or 32nd Street, youre better off keeping Trader Joes dumplings in your freezer in a pinch.
Both the original and pork dumplings are super delicious. You get 6 for 9.50 or 8 for 11.50, so better value if youre more hungry. Definitely recommend NY apple cider Arnold Palmer. Be aware seating is very limited. It was full when we came in on a Saturday but a table opened up quickly.
Mimi Cheng’s, a fairly new dumpling house is one of the few dumpling places you would consider taking someone on a date to, unless they are super into dumplings and have low standards when it comes to table hygiene, in which case your mom and I think you can do better. So go to Mimi’s instead and avoid hepatitis, and also get some awesome dumplings. The menu is small, pork, chicken, veggie, and a rotating special. You can get an order or 6 or 8 and split an order between two types. While this makes for some interesting mathematical combinations, it’s a nice way to try a bunch of the types without getting the dreaded dumpling bloat. The pork were our favorite, but the chicken were solid as well. You can’t go wrong with any of the options here. The special sauce, a mildly spicy soy mix (and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, mix in some sriracha) goes great with the dumplings as well. Go for fried for the extra texture. The chairs do stick a bit to the floor in a concerning fashion, but there are mini cacti on each table, so I think it evens out.
Tried the steamed reinvented classic + mighty veggie dumplings, and a side of taiwanese street cart greens. The dumpling filling was very fresh and had good flavor combinations. I liked that you could watch the dumplings being made. Very clean restaurant and very nice staff (there was an error with my order and I was overcharged and they noticed before I did and changed it for me). Would return if in the area.
The Super V dumplings are the best veggie dumplings I have ever had.The rest of the dumplings I tried were just mediocre (the classic and the chicken). The Taiwanese beef soup was missing some flavours (acid or spice?), it had a great mouthfeel but didn’t taste like much besides salt.
A spur of the moment decision that turned out to be a highlight of our most recent vacation in NYC. If youre in the East Village craving dumplings like I was, no place does it better. This tiny restaurant has a focused menu - dumplings plus a few sides, including multiple veggie options, plus homemade secret sauce. Limited seating, and the place was packed the whole time. Grab a window seat and watch the passersby, or if you dont mind sharing your elbow room, snuggle up at the communal table.
Love love love their dumplings! Definitely not a good place to go if you have too many food allergies (common ones like soy will obviously be tricky here), but Ive had great experiences every time Ive come here! Their specials are super interesting (for example the Korean Fried Chicken which was the April special was so unique and the fried rice puffs that came with it were amazing!!!!), but if youre into more classic stuff, Id go with the fried reinvented classic. The scallion pancakes are also amazing and their special sauce is fantastic! The dan dan noodles are pretty spicy, so be prepared but theyre great! No cash accepted!
Had the 12 hour organic noodle soup and the reinvented dumplings. I must say the soup was saltier than the ocean and the pan fried dumplings were just overpowered by the burnt flavor probably from a pan that has not been cleaned prior to cooking our order. Definitely not worth thr price they are charging.
Very friendly staff and excellent dumplings. You have a choice of either pan fried or steamed when you order. But wait, theres more. You could even order half of each style! You can see how labor intensive making the dumplings are because you see the pair of hands repetitiously working on them. It just makes each bite more special!
My favorite place to check out every month. The signature dumplings are always tried and true amazing. Generous, high-quality fillings in perfectly proportional dumpling. Nice filling to dough ratio. Every month, there is a special dumpling, and theyre special indeed! Some past favorites: Pat LaFrieda Dumpling, Thanksgiving Dumpling, Nomad Chicken Pot Pie Dumpling. This month (Sept 2017): Chef Missy Robbins of Lilia Dumpling. Come with an appetite for best results, but no matter the time of day, youll always have room for Mimi Chengs.
So excited to try this place, but was very disappointed that it is more hyped than impressive, after all what else can you really do with dumplings. Very expensive for what it is and not worth to go out of your way. Nothing wrong with it, just nothing impressive or great about it. Service is friendly and knowledgeable. Place is minimalist and clean.
The first dumpling shop Ive found that has absolutely no negatives. No unidentifiable ingredients, mystery meat, grease bomb -- nothing. Short menu means everything is terrific: three savory dumplings (veggie, chicken, pork), veggie of the day, dessert dumpling, homemade drink. Veggie dumpling is stuffed with really finely-diced kale and is delicious. Chicken dumpling is juicy and great, especially with addictive dipping sauce. But the pork dumpling: ahhhh. The menu says sustainable and organic, but your brain will be saying BACON. Surf-shop vibe means a great destination for lunch or dinner.
Short: Great Asian inspired fast food restaurant to grab a quick bite or snack. Delicious traditional dumpling, with special sauce which is a must try.Long: As you first walk in, the shop seems to be very small with limited seating to get friendly with others. There are seats aligning the wall of the restaurant and picnic style benches in the middle of the room. The menu is simple and easy to understand with descriptions of the different style of dumplings and side dishes to try.I ordered the Taiwanese street car veggies, Mimi Cheng, and reinvented classic dumplings. The veggies were delicious with the oyster sauce and garlic, however it was a little much for my liking on the oyster sauce. Both the Mimi Cheng and re-invented classic dumplings were phenomenal. It had a very authentic meaty taste upon the first bite. I got both dumplings pan-fried which I would definitely recommend to get that nice crunch. The wrapping was not thick and doughy but in fact very light. The Mimi Cheng Special Sauce is an absolute must try. Dont be fooled and drizzle that sauce all over your pan-fried dumplings because you will end up with a soggy snack before you can eat them all.Overall this place was a great pit stop to grab a bite to eat and the service was great. I gave this place 4 stars for the great authentic taste but unfortunately wish they had way more on their menu. Cant wait to go back to have the Mimi Cheng Sauce again.
This little shop turns out some mean dumplings to suit all, including vegetarian options. Plus they have a dumpling special to keep things interesting. Seating comes at a premium but there are couple of benches out front as well. Worth the extra coin for a higher quality product!
People that had ordered the same thing after me received the order first. Really disrespectful for customers that just want take-out. Seems they prioritize people in the restaurant first and not orders. Waited 30 minutes to get 6 pieces of dumplings... expected to wait 10 min for the order. Terrible experience... Staff seems to not care. If there are people, you will not get your dumplings fast, end of story.
Maybe it was my mistake for not getting any dumplings, but the spicy dan dan noodles left something to be desired. Not to say they were bad, but they definitely weren’t worth the $12 considering the minimal sauce and toppings - the only thing aside from the noodles and spices were a few pieces of bok choy.
Dan Dan noodles: 3/5Street cart greens: 3/5Mimi Cheng dumpling: 4/5Reinvented classic dumpling: 4/5The appetizers and sides were relatively unimpressive but the dumplings were great! Nice flavor, excellent crispy texture balanced with a firm noodle- I wasnt convinced it was the best dumpling in NYC- but its a winner.
Perhaps my hopes were too high. Service was great, loved the cute, small space and outdoor seating too, but dun dun noodles were flavorless (and noodles a little overdone) and chicken parmesan dumplings underwhelming esp. vs expectations. Big credit for the idea though - and, with work, they could be incredible!
Yummy quick bite.Edit: Just went tonight. Somebody screwed up, and our order came out long after later arrivals, pork dumplings were gritty because the veggies probably werent properly washed, scallion pancakes had almost no scallions, and the dumplings werent even that good at the end of it all. Maybe its an odd night, but this time it was overpriced and poorly managed.
I live in Connecticut and talk about Mimi Chengs to everyone. I so appreciate the organic factor and cleanliness of this place, as well as the pristine presentation and the dumplings were insanely delicious, flavorful and fresh. I cannot rave enough about this wonderful restaurant!
Does not care about customer service. A line was forming and nobody bothered to man the register. 5 employees just washing dishes and making dumplings. I caught someones eye and they just looked disinterested in helping and went back to doing their thing. Gave off the impression they were too good to rush to take orders. Definitely lost my business and interest.
The service here has always been terrible, but lately it’s been truly unbearable. Tonight I spent a full hour at Mini Cheng’s— I ordered two different kinds of dumplings and waited a full thirty minutes to receive the first half of my order, proceeded to eat them and wait for the other half of my order to come out. After 15 mins, I reminded the woman at the counter that I was still waiting on the other half of my order, but they had forgotten about it, so she put the order in again. About 5 minutes later, I received the dumplings but they were steamed instead of pan fried as I had ordered. Oh well, I ate them anyway and left as quickly as I could. The woman sitting next to me had ordered the Dan Dan noodles, but later regretted her order because she thought they would be too spicy for her. The woman at the counter wasn’t able to refund her her order or offer her something else on the menu (even something of a lower price), her rationale being that she doesn’t have the authorization from the manager to make any of those kinds of changes. Womp womp womp
It’s perfectly serviceable, not ohmygoodnessyum!, but it’s tasty & fresh-tasting & good. The cafe itself is adorbs & the bright yellow stools are a cheerful happiness-inducing huzzah. If this place were in my neighborhood, I’d drop by for snacks every week. Cozy comfortable good clean & bright.
Food was delicious, a little expensive but I guess it’s worth it . The wait time is kind of long and the young lady at the front seemed in a rush to take my order like she just wanted to be over with it when I was asking her questions about the menu not really friendly and her phone was out as she walked away to do something. Seemed like it wasn’t enough staff tonight I just saw her and a guy in the back cooking who seemed more friendly then her .
Went with one of my friends in November, they had some kind of Turkey dumpling special, it was overstuffed, it was burnt black across the bottom, extremely salty, grainy, and overall just kind of inedible and disgusting and they had a side of cranberry sauce which just made it worse, my family also tried and disliked it, we all took one bite and spit it out and tossed the rest, the interior was dimly lit and everything just looked tattered or old, the music was confusing since it was either Spanish or reggae in a dumpling shop, the paintings on the wall were random, the wooden benchs seat had peeling paint, the floor looked dirty and splattered with paint and stains, and nothing about it said authentic and it hurt to even be in the place and to think people would go for and spend money on such disgraceful attempts at dumplings

2022-06-05I usually love the food here, worth the price for the quality taste. Unfortunately, last week my order wasn’t made properly & when I submitted an issue, no one got back to me. My scallion pancake was burnt & unbearable to eat, it was never made this way before. I wasn’t issued a refund. This wasn’t noticed until I got all the way home. Sort of sucks because I love the food here, but would appreciate If someone would’ve gotten back to me to solve this issue.

2021-08-16Despite having to drive anywhere from 30-45 minutes to enjoy them, Mimi Cheng’s dumplings are without question, the best dumplings I’ve ever had! They’re incredibly fresh, the portion size is perfect and the excitement of wondering what next month’s special flavor will be is hard to compete with. My personal favorite are the Emmy Burger dumplings!

2022-08-17You already know why I am here for the Mimi Cheng and Peking House collaboration! I’m so happy I got the chance to try the August special! Anything Peking House is solid.

2022-08-23Really has gone downhill the past few years - dumplings not fresh, prices are outright silly ($15+ dumplings), rude staff, sporadic hours, and out of random items (especially the specials) even when not busy at all.A couple of years ago I would have put this among the best dumpling spots in the city and well worth the price. Now Im just giving up.

2022-09-05Dumplings are tasty but they are tiny... Even considering inflation I think it is overpriced. Charging extra for chili sauce is sad. That should be included. No tea for eat in. Thats also sad and not authentic for Taiwanese.Staff at this location is courteous and efficient.

2020-02-11This review applies to both locations. I’ve visited each location twice; my first time at leach location I had the monthly special and one of the dumplings from the regular menu. The monthly specials are always really good, but I do not like the dumplings from the regular menu.... the last two times I’ve stopped by, I just got an order of the monthly special and then went somewhere nearby for dessert. The sides are ok, but are very pricey. The dumplings are actually pretty pricey too. It’s fun to watch them being handmade up at the front, and their house dipping sauce is fantastic, but I can’t really recommend anything other than the monthly special. My favorite monthly was the Emmy burger collaboration! I wish all the dumplings were like this. The buratta meatball dumplings were also really good, and the lunar new year lamb dumplings were amazing. This month there is a French onion soup dimpling and I’d like to try that. So again, the specials are fun, interesting, and delicious, but you’re better off going to Chinatown if you want high quality pork or veggie dumplings and you’ll get them there for cheaper.

2022-06-23I dont like writing negative reviews, but the customer service here makes me cringeeeeeeeeeee. This is for my hard-working 9-5 peeps. If your lunch break is 30 minutes, DO NOT waste your time going there cause you will spend most of your time waiting for your food. They had one chef, and he looked like he was only cooking one order at a time. They dont acknowledge you right away either. They took so long that I had to go back to work and come back an hour later to pick up my order. Thank you Mimi Cheng for the $15 soggy pan-fried dumplings. I’ll stick with K-Town.

2020-10-24Best dumplings I ever ate! They were very tasty and so fresh! Yes it is pricey compared to other places but you pay for the too notch quality. Definitely worth a try if you are around. Very nice people too!
