Went here for an early dinner and the food is expensive for tiny portions. I ordered meatloaf and my partner ordered the “seafood sampler “. Seafood sampler comes with “shrimp, whiting and catfish and is $27! I ONLY received 3 pcs of shrimp and 1 small piece of whiting. When asked about the catfish , they said they were out. Why didn’t I get another piece of fish then. How is this entree called a sampler and I only get 3 pc shrimp and small piece of whiting and I got charged full price of $27. Bad management to not compensate customer for missing meat and still charge full price. NEVER going back! I felt like I was scammed and that’s not nice
The food is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!! I had chicken and ribs, mac & cheese and greens. Lawd this is the only place that can compete with my mothers cooking shhhhhhh! Lol next time Im Im in the area Ill definitely stop back by in a hurry. My only regret is that I didnt purchase the book of recipes😒 but Ill definitely look for it online. Give it a try, you wont regret it. Soul food at its best!!!!!!
This restaurant was pricey and was a long wait, but was worth it for the delicious chicken. However, they ran out of several items of food, and we had to constantly change the orders because of this. The peas were a weird gray color and did not look appealing at all. The staff was very nice and apologetic about the food mishaps. The BBQ chicken was very good, and it was a simple and cute building. Overall, an okay experience.
Finding a African american restaurant on the upper west side of NYC is like looking for a needle in a pin stack. I think this is literally the only one. I was passing through her for a client who swears by their food. He’s a older white guy who if not for him I would have missed out on the best tasting banana pudding I’ve had In memory. It’s my favorite desert and theirs had some southern black magic mixed in it. I wish I had purchased two servings. Theirs some nice history around this establishment and I suggest you go there, look at the old photos lining the walls and enjoy some really delicious food. #southernfoodnyc #africanamericanrestaurantnyc #foodnyc #upperwestsidenyc #nyc #uws #bananapudding #kingofcoffeenyc #kingofmarijuananyc #sankofatafariUPDATE!!!After my first review I was contacted by management to try the peach cobbler. It was yummy for my tummy.
Great restaurant for authentic soul food. Great menu options along with good portions. I really loved the flavors. Food was well seasoned with the correct spices. Reminded me of my grandmas cooking. Smothered chicken was fantastic. The sampler was great as I got to sample some of their main entrees and sides. You cant go wrong with this place. I have had soul food from various restaurants and Miss Mamies Spoonbread Too is a keeper. I will be going back SOON!
Ive been meaning to visit this place since I saw it on the food network a few years ago and was not disappointed. The setting is inviting and makes you feel as if you are about to enjoy a home cooked meal.I had a refreshing fresh squeezed lemonade and ordered the Miss Mamies sampler so that I could try a variety of there menu items and Im glad I did. The North Carolina rib was fall of the bone tender and jam packed with flavor. The grilled shrimp were a good size and paired well with the mashed potatoes and the spinach. The plate also came with a piece of the fried chicken which had a crispy/crunchy exterior with a subtle hint of spice and the dark meat was juicy and tasty.I took home a slice of the #1 peach cobbler in NYC and I can say that I will definitely be coming back to this place.
Food was overall very good. Norma was extremely kind to us. I am sad- however- at the lack of staff at this restaurant. There was only 1 server at the time that seemed to be doing everything. Making drinks, handling angry delivery drivers, having to tend to multiple tables, and running back and forth to the kitchen like a madman. I felt bad- but it seems that the place could run a LOT better with more staff. Although the food is great, the wait times to be seated, given drinks, and served our food was ridiculously long. I know soul food is made to order, but the poor server/host/bartender who literally had to do everything seemed extremely overworked. Having people designated to do each specified job (One hostess in charge of seating people/dealing with delivery people, a couple of servers to handle food and give orders to the kitchen, and one person that can bartend) would greatly benefit this restaurant instead of overworking one young man and one chef in the back. Because the food was so great I am rating 4 stars. I do hope- in the future though- that they will hire more people to be a more cohesive unit.
Terrible service! The meals took too long to arrive. The potato salad had too much vinegar in it. The candied yams were a bit soggy. There was no staff and only someone who seemed to be handling everything....although very kind, he was alone. The owner was there, she was simply present and that was it. Seemed to have only one cook in the kitchen who appeared to be stressed. We began outside underneath the front pergola, but eventually moved inside the restaurant because of the presence of a rat.The bathroom had no hand soap. The atmosphere gave the impression of a place that was once functioning well, but has now declined.
Had a taste for soul food and this was my first time ordering from here, the ratings were good so far, I ordered smothered turkey wings, rice & peas , potato salad and paid extra for macaroni & cheese and sweet potatoes , the Turkey wings wasn’t smothered, and didn’t get the macaroni & cheese and sweet potatoes , who does that and on top “I paid extra “, sorry but I will not be ordering from yaw ever again, I’ll just stick to Melbas , they follow directions and at least call you If they are short on a few Items smh.
I called to clarify my Groupon and spoke with the sweetest woman. When I got there, I had difficulty getting my Groupon voucher to open; they were so amenable, helpful & understanding. The food is out-of-this-world delicious. Id swear my Grandma made it all. I dont usually eat fried food, but the fried catfish is not heavy at all; the batter is nice and light. Oh, my stomach (and taste buds) are SO happy!
Waited almost an hour for take out. I get they have Doordash guys waiting as well but after inspecting my food, cornbread frozen, refrigerated, made me feel it was left over. I saw couple at table with a hot, fresh cornbread. I gave a 6 dollar tip on $23.00. I have not been here in about 3 years, I remember when this place was so classy. I get pandemic caused alot of damage to the restaurant bussiness but come on now it was 6:00 pm and only 4 sets of people, 2 at each table.
The best soul food spot in new york city , I live in brooklyn and I drive all the way on the f .d .r just to come get there fried chicken and Mac and cheese is 10 out of 10 there collard greens are delicious. There catfish is delicious there yams even more so anything I buy here hits really hard even the iced tea I really love if you ever have a day off and you want some real soul food dont hesitate treat someone and they will love it
We ordered in from Miss Mamie’s for the first time and I am so glad we did. The grilled BBQ shrimp were perfectly done and the sauce was fantastic. My fiancé loved the smothered chicken. The sides were all great, and the cornbread wasn’t overly sweet. Will definitely be ordering again!
Literally by far, the best and freshest AUTHENTIC soul food you’ll find in New York City. The food is always fresh, the chicken is always crispy, the turkey wings are always flavorful, the Mac and cheese is always made with love and the collard greens are always made with southern expertise. The desserts are absolutely amazing and the staff is extremely polite and accommodating! Please don’t miss out on this amazing restaurant. If you’re visiting NYC and need some soul food made with love, please visit! Enjoy!
Sad to say we did not have a good experience, considering that we drove 1hr and 30 minutes. The Ribs were practically frozen to the touch, the lady taking orders was very nice, but our overall experience was not pleasant. The wait time for our food was over 1hr as well. Definitely didnt match the previous reviews.
Very hospitable staff. Quite possibly the warmest I’ve ever been treated at a restaurant, and I’m from the South. Food was very tasty. I had the fried chicken, mac n cheese, and greens. The rum punch had some sort of ginger or mint that added fizz and a peculiar taste. Not my favorite taste but strong enough to make you forget you don’t like it. Service is extremely slow, so don’t go if you’re in any sort of hurry. It took over half an hour to order and about as long or longer to pay, but the food comes out in pretty good time. I would definitely go back.
The food here was amazing! Without naming any other known “soul food” spots close by, this by far was the best so far! This was the 4th on my list and I’m very impressed! And I’m not usually a reviews kind of guy. They really season the food right, flavorful, WITHOUT over-salting, and all the sides I had, which included stuffing, yams, fries, cornbread, and plantains, were all great compliments to my entrees. For a guy who grew up in Mississippi and Louisiana, and has been looking for a good spot, Miss Mamie’s DEFINITELY gets my stamp of approval!Thank you!
The fish was very good but a small portion. The garbage and string beans was good but also a very small portion. The music was good to listen to. Not enough waiter staff. Long wait for food. So if you like good soul food this is the place if you have but so much time to eat then go to a different place!!(not the place for you)
Second time ordering this weekMac and cheese still on the spicy side but still good just wish I could have regular Mac and cheese. I ordered smothered chicken and got friend chicken disappointing considering I have had it before and it taste bland and dry to me that’s why I wanted the smothered chicken.
It was recommended by friends and mostly driven by my wifes previous experience (11 years ago), we made our way to the establishment all the way from the Midwest. We had the three piece chicken meal with no drinks. The chicken was delicious though one piece was too tough to finish, and as the others have said, the collard green was pretty good too. I personally liked the mashed potato. The place was clean, cute and well lit, and it has a good view of the park. The waitress was quite wonderful and attentive. That been said, I feel the meal was just above average and a bit over priced. Whats interesting was, the great review I read in the restaurant hallway by NYT, mentioned the chicken meal was about $10, where we had paid $20. Not sure how old that review was...
I mean you guys have to come to this spot Food was absolutely delicious. God bless the owner and my server chik. They made it happen for my date and I, we will definitely be coming back. Great atmosphere and phenomenal service.P.S.Please Do Not! fall asleep on the cat fish.
Its was a bad experience. The food was not authentic southern soul food the fish was not catfish, the ribs were not smoked. We paid for buffet and got a one serving of what we thought was good. Peach cobbler didnt taste like homemade. However, the baked chicken was tasty. I wish I can give a half a Star.
I wish I could leave 0 stars. This place is absolutely the worst place of business n restaurant I have been to. First they insulted me about the Groupon I tried to use. The owner kept saying oh I need to make sure I get paid , I wont serve you unless I get paid. Mind u the Groupon is already been prepaid for in advance. Ive never been more insulted in my life. Ive never purchased a Groupon and had an owner try n insult me by saying I didnt pay for it and it wouldnt be honored. So rude and disappointed. Then we waited over 45 just to sort it out. I had to contact Groupon myself. The manager John was the only nice n professional person at this establishment. Miss mamie herself is disgustingly rude and unprofessional. NOW LETS GET TO THE FOOD. ITS ABSOLUTELY AND DISGUSTINGLY HORRIBLE. THE MAC N CHEESE HAD A WEIRD SPICE N FLAVOR, (COULDNT EAT UIT) , CHICKEN IS HORRIBLE , COLLARD GREENS AND CORN BREAD IS ALSO HORRIBLE. CATFISH WAS OILY. IVE BEEN TO SO MANY SOUTHERN STYLE PLACES AND THIS IS JUST ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. THE WAIT STAFF IS JUST AS HORRIBLE. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. FYI THEY EVEN THROW UR FOOD IN THE MICROWAVE. DISGUSTING. NOT WORTH THE GROUPON PRICE LET ALONE REGULAR PRICE AT ALL.
Popped in to have lunch and it was the best meal Ive ever had in North America. We had the seafood gumbo for starter and then grilled salmon with candied yams and cornmeal stuffing for the entree and it was fingerlicking good. The cherry on the top was the delicious peach cobbler. Its their number 1 dessert and we can totally see why.The customer service was great, the waitress was very helpful and welcoming. We would give this place more than 5 stars if that were possible. Will definitely be back on my next visit to NYC.
If you are in the mood for some good soul food you absolutely have to stop by and eat at Miss Mamies Spoonbread. This is my go to place in Harlem for soul food. The food is amazing and the portions are large. Everything on the menu is delicious! The owner, Miss Norma Jean is absolutely the sweetest person. She makes you feel at home and treats you like family.
Went to Mamies for an early weekend dinner. It was also the Valentines weekend. Place was fairly empty at 5pm by the time we left at 7 it was more than half full. The seafood sampler was ok, everything tasted fresh and it was crunch. Uncle Als ribs were excellent, meat was tender and flavorful.
Very quiet and exclusive site, nothing touristy. Excellent fried chicken made with love for assiduous of the zone. Very careful and personalized attention. A culinary oasis with Jamaican fragance, in a modern and cosmopolitan Harlem. Excellent quality / price ratio. 100% recommendable!
Incredibly slow service! My family and I went for an early dinner. It was not particularly crowded, but took forever for the food to come. We waited a good 10 minutes before we were given menus and another 10 before our orders were taken. We never received cornbread for the table until we asked for it. My husband ordered an appetizer that ended up not coming out! It was a good hour and a half wait before we got our food!! We were told that they were short staffed and the chef was taking orders and cooking the food. There was a lady there that was helping with order taking, but she was also very slow moving. We should’ve been told that there would be an extended wait due to the fact that they were short staffed. I also feel since we waited so long we should’ve been offered a complimentary drink or appetizer or something. As for the food, it was just ok! My husband’s chicken was not cooked all the way through. The ribs were salty. The rice and peas were bland! I was very disappointed to say theleast, especially since my three kids were with me and they were super hungry! They also had the nerve to add a 20% gratuity to the bill! I will not be returning here!
I definitely liked my experience! The young lady was a one stop shop....honey! She held down the entire front of house. She was the bartender, waitress, hostess and runner honey. Now, the food: BBQ ribs were delicious and completely melting off the bone. The sauce was the perfect match. The mac n cheese was good....not the best Ive ever had. But good! The yams and collard greens are whats going to bring me back. OMG!!!! They are delicious. So, i ordered the Miss Mamie Sampler and honey it was just enough to make me order a plate. It is worth the money. Try it!!!I then shared a combination entree of ribs and fried chicken. As you can see in the picture, we ate all the meat. We were full to capacity!!!!! Only downfall was the cornbread and the card machine being down. If it wouldve been online l, then the tip wouldve been higher. But, i must say.....this place is definitely worth the try.
Nice spot to go for some good soul food. The second time i went an elderly woman came out to greet us and make sure everything was good. She was so sweet. The cornbread was delicious. If i could make the trip on my own i would go every day just for the cornbread too bad i cant.
Hello, just left this place with 2 of my friends, we sat our selves and waited for about 10 minutes, before greeted by one Server/Bartender in the entire place. There was a group of 6-8 people at one table and another had 2 people and 1person for, ato go order. Even with the understaffing, we took a shot and ordered, 2 Grits with Catfish and 1 Waffle and Fried Chicken, 1 side of Mac and Cheese. The grits neither of us could continue to eat, it had a taste of tap water to me, how you ask, I asked myself the same thing, the fish wasn’t that bad. My other friend liked the Chicken and Waffles. The Mac I had was salty, my friend who substituted Mac and Cheese for her Grits, her Mac had Cheese thrown on top, and not fully melted. My 1st time there, not worth going back.
I’m from NC, so I know about Southern and comfort food. The food at Miss Mamies was amazing and the service was excellent. Kenny (our server & bartender) provided extraordinary customer service and was a joy to be around. Please do yourself a favor and experience delicious meals that won’t cost you an arm and leg!
I called my order into the spoonbread restaurant on W. 110th street. After picking up my food and driving to my location. I found my chicken was extremely salty. My order was Smothered chicken, macaroni and cheese and collards. I called and spoke to the manager. He offered me a 2dollar coupon.Hum....my meal was only $30.00.. go figure. If I wasn’t as far away as I was. I would have taken it back! Just not a good overall experience.
It was pretty basic. $6 for jar lemonade is ridiculous without refills. The rice for the rice and beans was 2 mins undercooked. The chicken needed a little more seasoning or marinades in buttermilk. The waitress was nice and attentive. The restaurant was nice and clean.
Today was my first time visting Spoonbread. The place is very intimate and homely. The cornbread is nice and warm. I ordered the Salmon, mac and collard greens- soooooooo goooood!!! And our waitress Natasha was simply the best. Literally. I love HER! I will be back with friends so that they can shate my amaaaaazing experience :)
Every dish Ive had from here has been cooked with so much love & flavor. As southerner in the city, its the best place I have found to complete those soul food cravings. From the baked chicken to the ribs to the yams to the delicious punch, trust me when I say: its all damn good.
Actually the worst experience I’ve had in NYC. I ordered takeout from them and waited 2 hours. I kept checking in with them and they said that it’s still being made and then after two hours they said that they “lost my order and are trying to find it”. I actually have no idea how that’s even possible. Next the person at the register was extremely rude. Honestly disappointed because the food ended up being cold and didn’t even taste decent.
Ive been going there for quite a while, but over the time it has been going down in my eyes. This is just one instance from a few that I will share. I went there 12/30/16 to treat my aunt and family to a belated birthday dinner to her. The food was mediocre at best. My beef ribs were cooked to hard the rice and peas were kind of bland. Then on top of it all went to pay my bill with my credit card and had the waiter come back to tell me that the machine was outdated and would have to wait a while before they could charge the meal on my card. Obviously I was not gonna sit there and wait so I payed cash. And I still tipped the waiter who was more concerned about other patrons(who were white, us Hispanics) way more than she was about us. If you want great service and even greater food go to Amy Ruths everything about them are outstanding. I will not eat at spoonbread again as I felt neglected and discriminated against..... And to think I used to tell my friends with praise for them and always tipped the staff generously everytime I ate there....😕😕😕
Back in my Columbia days this place was a refuge for hungry students to get some soul-food... Whenever I am back visiting campus, I love to visit this gem of a restaurant again... The food is heavy, and southern style. I highly recommend the fried chicken. It’s pricy, but that’s Manhattan for ya.
My experience at this place has been nothing but the best. Lots of home down loving from the staff and in the food. Staff very attentive but not annoying. Ive had the meatiest ribs falling off the bone melt in your mouth experience right here at Miss Maimes. Ive had the smother chicken Mmm gone. Any of the sides that you put with it is superb. The ambiance always good. Noise is low unless your singing to the tunes of the R&B they play while your dining. Every song they play I know. It reminds you of back in the day when music had meaning. I plan to visit today. Dont know what Im gonna eat but I know Im gonna enjoy the beat of the music while I decide.
I had a horrible experience at this restaurant. I Ordered oxtails and received bones. I asked the waiter to exchange the meal for the fried chicken, potatoe salad and cabbage. I feel that he was upset at my request and did something to my meal. I woke up this morning with an upset stomach. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
First things first: the wait was incredibly (and almost shockingly) LONG. I waited only about 25 minutes for my food to come out, but some other individuals at nearby tables waited closer to 40 minutes. While the macaroni and cheese side and the roast chicken were quite good, the potato pie, rice and peas, and cornbread were all acceptable at best. While prices are reasonable, I cant recommend going here for table service given the waits unless you have a huge amount of time to spare. That said, it is a local institution and the long waits make this one of the least rushed restaurants in Harlem.
Miss Mamies Spoonbread Too is, at the moment, the place I would like to go to again sometime. Its a perfect place to relax and also enjoy *fantastic* food.Spoonbread has this aura of hominess, like your just relaxing on the couch and eating instant ramen. Its as if youre sitting in your own little bubble and enjoying your own dishes of delicious food.If you do go (I really hope you do) then make sure to get the Peach Cobbler; its AMAZING. Really great with vanilla ice cream too.
Over priced food for out the can salty collard greens , absolutely NOT made by scratch. Any real cook can tell; none tasting catfish & whitings all you taste is the batter and do not approve . The mac & cheese, Ehhhhh I had better and can make it all excellent myself at home. Never again , shall I let this place rob me again! They need to fire the cook ! No lie ! I paid $40.00 for two take outs. GTFOH ! Small portions too ! Smhhhhhhh The NERVE ! Dont believe the HYPE at the bottom from the owner either!!
The food was really good to me: spicy/slightly sweet greens, moist chicken with gently crispy skin, ribs that were maybe fattier than most folks like (but I love) and tasty cornbread. The part I dont get: as one reviewer mentioned, with only one other two-top seated in the whole joint, how come homeboy propping up the bar cant greet folks, offer menus, get water nor anything else that would signal that the place isnt self-serve? His main responsibility seemed to stand by/near/around the bar, chat with the two people already there, talk a little bit of unoriginal politics and then sing along to the playlist. The young lady who did eventually wait on us was incredibly sweet and efficient but its just weird with a staff of two to have one person hanging out doing sweet f-a. Tip well and tip cash so Sir Hangabout doesnt try to lay any claims.
Food is absolutely amazing but the service could use an improvement. It appears that they may need extra help and/or could use a bus boy. I went in to dine 2.5 hours before closing and the favorite Miss Mamie Spoonbread classic sampler wasnt available which was a little disappointing.
I visited Miss Mamies Spoonbread Too yesterday afternoon around 12:45 pm. I was accompanied by my 5 year old son and a good friend if mine. The decor was and upkeep of the restaurant was poor at best. It appeared as if it hadnt been mopped in quite a while. My friend and I both had Salmon. I had calaloo greens and candied yams and my friend had the macaroni and cheese and another side I cant seem to recall at this time. My son had the stew chicken and collard greens. All dishes come with rice and peas. At 12:45 in the afternoon, our rice and peas was not fresh at all. Most of it was comprised of burnt, hard, reheated, and maybe reheated again rice grains that obviously was scraped from the bottom of the pot from a day or two before. Everything on our plates were loaded with sugar with the exception of the calaloo. If you are diabetic, you would certainly be on your way to a diabetic coma. If you are not diabetic, after a meal there, you certainly would be. The meal there was highly disappointing and to think they thought it was okay to serve food in that manner. Nothing on those plates were fresh. The salmon was frozen and certainly microwaved. It was rubbery and sweet. If I wanted left-overs I certainly would have better luck with a 1 week old meal from thanksgiving dinner. I would not recommend this place at all. I was highly disappointed. The doggie bag (we did not ask for) went straight into the garbage bag at Central Park. Btw... the restroom... no bueno!
Was looking to go to Spoonbread Too on 137th St. Found out it had closed. So went to Spoonbread Too on 110th Street.Food was good. Had the smothered chicken, cabbage and rice and beans. Prices were higher than the 137th St restaurant.Surprised ... no shocked! .. at the price for lemonade! .. $8 in a mason jar! No refills.Tasted like powered, not fresh squeezed lemons. Service was a little slow.Over all was a nice experience.
Had a bad experience at this restuarant tonight i went here years back and i loved it but it has changed alot .my babez and i came in and the man who cleans tables seated us there were 2 groups of white folks who came in after us .now they had my babe and i waiting a half hour just to get some service . they served the groups of white folks immediatly then the manager came along and gave us water and a plate of cold stale corn bread while the other had nice big pieces of corn bread with butter on the side then they bring us our lemonade and ice tea that was supposed to be served in a mason jar now we didnt get the mason jar but every one else did they took long to bring us our order when they did bring us our order it was sloppy cold and taste horrible they served us more bones then chicken i never tasted spicey mac and cheese before i was highly upset and not happy so was the babez we were so bothered we ask for the bill immeadiatly as we waited for the bill the waitress is handing out half off flyers for the next vist she selectively handed it out to the white folks and skipped our table that was not a problem for the fact that we was not pleased with their service at all the took long to serve us but yet was fast to bring us the bill . i will not ever come back to the place nor reccomend it to anyone ever who would of thought that the black and hispanics would do their own kind wrong yet put the white folks on a high pedestool i think that was racial and wrong people be mindful i advise not to come to this place mcdonalds has better service. above all my babez and i still managed to enjoy the rest of our night regardless of that horrible restuarant experience. not to mention this morningi woke up puking and very bad abdominal pain the food wasnt fresh apprently or well cooked . once again this place needs to go
The food is good but the service is the worst I have encountered ever. I decided not to eat in after the first terrible experience and try take out. They charged $20 for my lunch and didnt even give me utensils or one little napkin. The owner needs to take control of the customer service and train the staff before they go out of business.
What a way to run a business! I went by yesterday Friday, August 11 at 2 PM. The place was closed, dark and the security shutters were down. There was no note on the door or anything saying why they were closed. Their hours do not say they take off in the afternoon. So Im not going to go out of my way to try this place again.
The food was cold number 1 our group paid for a buffet and only got 1 serving collar greens were loaded with vinegar and sugar I dont know what that was they called fish but they only gave 1 nugget size piece the fired chicken and macaroni and cheese was ok but Ive had better the candied yams were watery and loaded with cinnamon the sweet potato pie and peach cobbler well Ill just say Id prefer Marie Calenders also the man who was serving was very rude and gave the impression that he didnt appreciate our business then had the nerve to have a cook book for sale Ill never go there again and wouldnt recommend them to anyone if it were possible I would give them 1/4 star best thing about them is the decor not the food for sure
Horrible experience qent for date night an they gave me wrong food my boyfriend got his order right an he enjoyed it but by time my food came he was done so now im pissex an the waiter comes smiling with my food like everytyhings is ok the hell it aint so i didnt pay for that meal an i left the way i came Hungry an now pissed worst 1st time experience every wont b going there again ever
We spent $80 on 2 meals & I also purchased 2 extra sides seeing how small the portions were..I got fried catfish (1 fillet cut into 3 small pieces) which the batter had too much cornmeal in it that the granules got stuck in my teeth & my husband smothered chicken which had a long feather on the wing, the black eyed peas & rice was bland & dry, the cornbread was dry, the gray 4 the smothered chicken was bland & tasted like it was canned gravy..we were repeat customers years ago and they have gone from a 10 to a 2 in our book from a great experience to extreme disappointment..we will never return..
IT WAS SHORT OF STAFF MY S.F CHICKEN AND TWO SIDES WERE COLD MAC & CHEESE WAS THEN SUBSTITUTED FOR BLACK EYED PEAS THEY RAN OUT OF WHITE RICE THE PEAS LOOKED HORRIBLE WIFE DECLIED THEM BUMMER, BUT MY WIFE ENJOYED HER CABBAGE MY MOTHERS PLATE WAS HOT I WAS SPEECHLESS STILL LEFT A TIP AND I WONT EAT THERE AGAIN EVER

2022-05-09The first time that I went there the food was excellent the service was great. Even though I know it is Mothers Day restaurants are busy we had a 4pm reservation we did not get water until 5 along with cornbread. The Fried Chicken was not cooked thoroughly they only gave you one piece of rib and there were labels from the collard greens cooked inside of them they need more help.

2021-09-20The short ribs are incredibly tender I had that with rice and peas and greens.. everything was spot on.. the place gets packed on the weekend so make a reservation grab one of their signature Rum Punch and expect a wait.. it is worth it...

2022-04-09Cute spot. The staff is so friendly! Loved the fried chicken. The corn bread was very dry. The sweet potato was just ok. My favorite was the chocolate cake! The coconut cake was terrible.

2022-06-21This visit was awful the only item I was able to consume was the tarter sauce for my catfish. My bill was a 125.00 after the 5.00 that was removed after my complaint about the turkey wings. My daughters meal was dry which she also had turkey wings. Please give me back my hard earn 💰 by contacting me to be the cook then I can eat my own good soul food. WHAT HAPPEN HERE

2022-04-18I don’t know what happened to this place. When we went for early dinner there were three other table occupied. Yet it took about 15 minutes for server to come and it took over 50 minutes for our dishes to arrive. The only reason we stayed was that we were chatting to catch up with each other. It turned out that fried chicken was too dry and I felt horrible I recommended the dish to my friend. Everything, service and cooking felt like they just opened yesterday and still trying to figure it out. There were several Uber eats messengers and poor guys were waiting forever, too.

2021-08-01My family and I had a long day out so we wanted to get some local soul food. We were headed to Melbas but they were full. When we initially came in no one was there to greet us. I saw why bc there were only two severs and the place was pack. We were expecting a third guest but bc the long wait she left. After finally being seated we had to wait 30+mins.for the menus, than wait 30+ mins.for the water, than we got our orders taken, after another 30+ mins we got cornbread and it was a real LONG wait for the food. Than when we did get the food our drinks hadn’t reach the table. We had to remind the server and there were no straws. The restroom was clean and didn’t have lingering odors.Overall the food was good and stuck to the style of southern cuisine. My mom tore her plate up!!😂😂

2022-02-20Truly feels like the south—not just the food but the pace and feel (this is not Jacob’s Pickles). Norma Jean has fed a half dozen presidents, but this isn’t a restaurant coasting on reputation—when we went, Norma Jean was our waitress! It was an incredible experience that’s super rare in nyc.

2022-06-06Good day,Upon arrival the hostess was on her cell phone as well as during and upon exiting. When asked, she said she was from St Lucia, why not employ a Southern Bell instead? The smothered Turkey wing, yes ONE wing for $22+ is absurd as the fatty skin covered the Turkey bone and you could barely find enough Turkey on the bone to make ONE Turkey sandwich. The smothered GRAVY was tasty BUT the fatty skin is not edible which means you really aren’t getting much from one wing. The cornbread has a weird starchy taste and isn’t good! Is it vegan or just missing ingredients?Standing near the counter smells of exterminator spray which is where your food is placed by chef. The Mac and cheese was tasty but the mashed potatoes were bland and cold. When I told the hostess after calling her over while on her mobile phone she said that they were cold because they were put on the plate first and did not offer to replace them..That really doesn’t make sense at all!Melba’s has them beat on many levels!
