Lots of nooks and crannies to explore and look for what you want. It has a bit of a an old skool feel while also seeming a bit Party City. Do they have what you need....probably/maybe? Like I said - lots to explore with normal prices. Alas, I did not find what i was looking for (a very specific thing - not their fault).NOTE: They do balloon blowing , a woman who walked out with an order as I was leaving almost immediately lost a balloon to the skies - maybe ask for double knots or some sort of ...cover? for your balloons.
I had no idea that this store existed until someone from a nearby shop suggested it. Modern State is definitely the place to go for anything party-related you can think of (whether you need it or not!). Great selection and the people there are helpful too.
Great neighborhood toy store. Can find here anything from toys, party supplies, art supplies, candies, costumes etc.
They didnt give me discounts posted for the after holiday sale/everything Christmas & Chanukah 50% off. Most of the products in this store arent marked at all (which is questionable), but 1 product which I bought multiple of did have a price. On my receipt I was charged full price. Prior to this I was trying to prevent someone elses kid from damaging their goods, yet I was lectured for not controlling my kid. Better selection of products at cheaper prices in other stores nearby.

Pricey, but its one of the last good toy stores Ive seen, and it has any craft or party supply you need. Would recommend
Disappointing customer service. I purchased balloons the day before my sons first birthday, and specifically asked the sales person to sell me balloons that would last 24 hours. She selected ones for me. The balloons deflated 12 hours before the party. The manager refused to refund my money or claim any responsibility for his sales persons misinformation.
In terms of toys good but in terms of staff and the arrogant store manager not so pleasent. Every time I go there I have to remind myself to not speak with this guy as he just puts a big dark cloud over the experience.

If you feel like being insulted, this is the place. As a long time customer of State Street News and now Modern State, today, I was accused of stealing by the manager of the 3rd avenue store - Dial. He insisted that I show him an addressed envelope I had in my pocket. This is the UES, being publicly accused of stealing in our own neighborhood, is vulgar and unacceptable.

Super expensive - they charge for every single thing. Balloon + helium + “high-float” so that it lasts more than 2 hours. First and last time coming here.

2022-07-12As I walked along East 86th Street, I spotted [ MODERN STATE ] through and under claustrophobic scaffolding and down a half-flight of stairs. Im glad I went through and down because this is a GEM of a store! Mainly a Toy & Party Store, it has extensive areas of Stationery, Art Supplies, and a good selection of Candy. I will return so I can more thoroughly peruse its many offerings.

2022-07-22They used to have an awesome selection of hot wheels but like always one guy brought everything like a scalper that he looked like he was and taking the fun out of car hunting for what we look for,so until then i hope they restock soon🙏🏻💯🇺🇲

2021-12-06Great store with wide selection and good folks working there. It is a great place to pick up decorations, costumes, toys for any holiday. They always cycle in inventory for whatever is coming up. They have a really great toy selection. Its probably as wide a selection, if not wider, than the Target that recently opened on 86th. Plus you cant beat the character of a local store.

2021-06-01I come here to shop for childrens toys, games and crafts, as well as writing pens. I love the ones (Uni-ball & Papermate) that doesnt smear. For me the prices are high but I can find things with ease. Today I realized for the first time that they even sell Lichen.

2021-05-10One of the few toy stores left in the neighborhood I take my son here all the time. Its a great party store but the toys are a little overpriced but my little guy loves going toy shopping here so its worth it. I just wish they had a bigger selection.

2020-06-17Its a mix of a crafts store, toy store, art supply store, school supply store and a party store in a large cavernous space.Ive gone there to find paper and paint for watercolor, foam balls for a childs school project, acrilic paint for my wife, balloons for a party, toys for a birthday and Halloween costume supplies for my anniversary.The staff is helpful and knowledgeable about their stock without having to look it up in a computer. Its a neighborhood staple.
