This place is great. I go in now and again to get booster packs I cant find many other places. They not only have cards, but games and Funkos as well! If they were any more of a one stop shop for hobbies they would also have a strip club and a dispensary attached to it. The staff are friendly and quick to offer help in finding what youre looking for. You want dice? They got you. You want DragonBall Z Funkos? They got you. Sports cards? Boom. Want a Finnish import of Hungry Hungry Hippos? They probably have it (only speculation, just go there and ask for it by name to verify). They even have tables where you can have a seat, read a comic, and maybe check out the cards you just bought. If you see a large crab sitting next to a pile of YuGiOh cards when you go there, thats me. Feel free to sit down and get embarrassed in a duel. The only downside? Some of the box sets of cards are priced a little high but thats the cost of excellence, baby!
Terrible customer service, very unfriendly. I went to buy some booster packs and I noticed the prices varied for some of the packs. I asked them why and they told me some of the packs could have rare cards in them that the other packs don’t offer. I asked what type of rare Pokémon and they didn’t know…. So I purchased a few packs and when I got back to the hotel, I realized they appeared to have been resealed. All of the packs pretty much had general cards. I also noticed the trainer boxes, celebrations boxes, etc. are priced $30 to $50 more than stores near me in PA and online. I would stay away from this place.
This place is not welcoming at all. The past few times I’ve been there, the staff has always been so rude to me even after spending several hundreds of dollars in hobby boxes. I have had it with their rude behavior towards me. This includes All three workers there. Never going here again.
HONEST and filled with INTEGRITY! I recently went into Montasy Comics and purchased a 2021-22 Donruss Soccer Hobby box. While paying I thought the price seemed higher than what I had been seeing elsewhere. I didn’t say anything because I figured it was New York prices/taxes and I like supporting my local card shop. I had shopped at Montasy Comics before and always had a great experience. The manager, Jimmy has always been great to deal with and he’s always very helpful too. So after my purchase, I hop the Subway to my apartment and I received a missed call and a txt from Jimmy saying he was sorry but they had made a mistake and overcharged me for the hobby box. Wait! What? I was SHOCKED! I mean, what business is going to call and txt you that they’ve made a mistake and want to give you money back?? Try hardly any! I wasn’t too surprised however because it was Jimmy and Adam too from Montasy Comics after all. Both stand-up guys! I went back the next day and they reimbursed me the higher amount and then I paid the lesser amount. After multiple apologies from them, I kept telling them what they did for me was incredible and how much I appreciated their honesty and integrity. These guys went above and beyond for me! So make sure when you’re in Manhattan you stop in or simply order online if you collect comics, sports cards, Pokémon and Magic the Gathering cards, sealed wax, FunkoPops, etc Montasy Comics has you covered! You will always be taken care of properly by Montasy Comics!
Don’t generally review anything but been here a fair amount as a sports card aficionado so thought helpful to give people the lowdown- Staff are very friendly- On average, boxes are 15% more expensive than eBay. I’m not saying things should be sold at a discount but probably should have the prices at least in-line with eBay, I think would sell much more product (example: select mega basketball box $70-80 on eBay vs. $110 in store. Prizm retail basketball sells for $240 on eBay vs. $279 in store, just to give a couple examples)- the website and prices are not up to date, probably not too much work to have this up to date, might as well get rid of the website if it isn’t maintained and updated- they have a phone number but no one picks up. What’s the point of this? Either don’t have a phone number or have one where someone answers the phone
Was gift shopping yesterday for my friend and both cashiers really knew their stuff! They had an amazing selection of Pokémon, Yugioh, and Magic the Gathering cards, to list some. Lots of neat little things in there, including some rare and currently unavailable products.
Store is in a convenient location but for a local card shop they are not very friendly. While the people working the cash register are very polite and knowledgeable about their products, management is rude. Each time I have been I have had an uncomfortable and irritable experience with the manager. The shop has a decent selection of products however compared to other shops prices are high and they do not like negotiating either. Disappointing experience
First time walking through the doors for an mtg draft of m20. Was greeted on entry and signed up for the tourney quickly. I sat down and chatted with some fellas playing as I munched on reeses pieces. players were friendly and really knowledgeable. Saw some great decks being played in the legacy format that was running at the same time. Will be back!
Good selection of quite a variety of things with a few deficiencies. Upon walking in I see a booster box for evolving skys. They said it was 188, fair enough, gotta make a buck. Made our selections and checked out, was then told that booster box was 208 and they had the wrong price. $6 a pack is what that comes to which is the same as they were selling them for individually. Also selling fake Yu-Gi-Oh cards as singles.
I used to go in person, and everyone is very friendly and welcoming - they remembered me after having just come in once. Now that I don’t work around the area, I just order online. I go to them for Pokémon cards. The prices are a little above the original retail, but nothing too crazy. Maybe at most $15 above? (Depending on the demand for the product). I like that they have older booster packs and not just battle styles.
The staff was very cold and not welcoming and the space itself was very sterile. While trying to look at the comics, one of the workers was vacuuming all around us. They seemed annoyed we were there. We did come 30 min before closing, but no one else was there, so you would think they would appreciate some business (we did make a purchase). The selection of comics was very very small and underwhelming. They had more toys than comics. If you are looking for a large selection of comics and a fun atmosphere, this is not the place for you.
Had a wide selection of trading cards in stock the time I went. Im personally into pokemon and got a battle styles single strike urshifu elite trainer box, a chilling reign ghost rider calyrex elite trainer box (before the actual release day!), and a couple of ultra prism booster packs. They had sun and moon and sword and shield single packs, booster boxes, and single cards. Youll have to buzz in to get inside and its on the 2nd floor. Overall a great shop with lots of awesome products (not just trading cards. They have pop figures, comics, etc.). Only downside Id say is that their prices are a bit more expensive than MSRP but thats expected in these times of the trading card shortage and demand for the products. Thanks so much!
Are you looking to get ripped off? Have you always wanted to pay double, or even TRIPLE retail price for cards? Well, head on over to Montasy Comics. Where youll have to waste precious time just to find that it is the most overpriced and expensive card store in all of USA. There are plenty of other shops out there with excellent customer service who will provide you with answers and prices. Not only that, but they wont treat you like a criminal when youre inside their store. It is no wonder that they dont provide prices over the phone. If they did, not one soul would show up. I highly recommend that you call GAMING UNIVERSE in flushing before making a purchase at Montasy Comics. When you hear the price difference you will black list this establishment for good.
I called to ask the price of a Commander Legends Booster Box to which they replied that they do not give out prices over the phone. I live in Queens and apparently I am supposed to drive an hour to the city to find out a price.Aside from that, their prices are insanely excessive even for Manhattan and from the few times I have been there, the customer service is awful. You have someone constantly watching your every move as if youre doing something wrong. Nonetheless, it is nice to have a cardshop available in the city where there are not many.
Excellent mix selection of comics, trading cards of Magic the Gathering and other game franchises, and some space for tournaments and socializing. Been ages since my last visit but the atmosphere is usually friendly despite me coming and going in a business like manner. Staff is very helpful.
Hahaha scummiest business. We called to ask what their prices were after seeing some of the negative comments here, and they refused to give pricing over the phone because it’s against their ‘policy’ and suggested I just come in. How to say ‘I’m a scalper!’ Without saying ‘I’m a scalper’ 😂
Can I give 0 stars? Good. Ordered a couple Pokémon etb preorders for 100$ Each. now a day before release they tell me they can only give me two instead of the 3 I payed for 2 months ago. Oh and also they raised the price to 140. So they ordered 3 for me, only going to give me 2, and selling the 3rd to the highest bidder. Scum
Good store overall. They have some comic books, but it caters heavily to card games, especially Magic the Gathering. It’s location on one of the richest streets in the city makes it a distinct place from all the shopping and bustle. I hope they host events on the MLP card game. It be great to see that in action.
Usually a decent store for sports cards stocked with new releases. I wont be returning though as I called earlier to inquire about a price of a box and they told me they werent allowed to tell me the price. This was weird as they usually list prices online. The place isnt easy to get to and on a cold Winter day, itd have been nice for them to tell me price of the product.
Good selection of cards plenty of staff so you dont wait around they also have some less mainstream stuff like old busts of super heroes that might be out of circulation. The main thing they focused on is community, they have a proper area for people to sit down and play its most of the store. I was looking for some help getting started with the new dragon ball super trading card game. The persons working the counter were not too familiar with it instead they pointed out some regulars who were already playing it there who had no problem with me sitting in to watch a few games and even answered some questions I had.
Montasy is a gem! I went there with my 11-year-old son and they very patiently answered every single question he asked (and then some). He was able to trade some Pokemon cards for store credit so he could, you guessed it, get more cards! Great merch & honest/ethical/nice people. Highly recommend!
I came in looking for individual Pokemon cards. They had a small case for GX, prism star cards, etc, but not a lot of regular rares. They have a couple of small partially-filled binders, but many of the cards in them were from XY or earlier. Overall a small selection compared to other places Ive been. Some of the staff working there at the time didnt seem very present and made me move around a lot while I looked in the binders. I ended up getting a few good cards, but Ill have to go somewhere else to look for more.
Came to play an MTG pre-release event here whilst in the city. Found the staff very unfriendly and unhelpful and was made to feel like an outsider by most of the people there. There was a few of nice people but one in particular, was losing, tried to cheat and then got angry and argumentative when he was caught out. If you are looking for an inclusive, welcoming environment go somewhere else.
This place was very helpful I visited from Arizona and was trying to find a local card shop due to being into collecting yu gi oh cards. He was very patient with me even though it was not his game. I spent about $85 and he hooked it up with a lost art Yu-Gi-Oh card which helped lessen the blow. If youre ever in this area you should definitely check it out its on the second floor and you need to be buzzed in but trust me its worth it. They have what you want whether magic, Pokemon, or yu gi oh.
This store tried to over charged me by $20 for a brand new released book.I called to see if they had Batman issue 39 they said they did it would hold it for me. I arrived an hour later and they tried to charge me $25 on the First market book which was still only worth $5. This is against the law. I was asked you to buy two other books but I walked away I have spent good money here in the past and we never returned. I also noticed other books being over F charged but nothing like this.I have been collecting 40 years. Please everyone go to midtown comics two close locations alone. Also on the east side is Hailey comet not too far away they also take care of you.
They were all super friendly and nice smallish but clean place to go too spend some time having fun and getting to know other fanatics. It’s big for magic the gathering but from the employees their they are looking to build the dragon ball super community their with tournaments and other trading card games. But they do have a large selection of every card games and sports Memorabilia’s. Overall i enjoyed my 30 mins there and will be coming back again.
I‘m swiss and came to NYC with my wife for a short christmas holiday. I play Magic since 1996 and I love the game and its community. Found this store through google and went there for the two last days while my wife was shopping. Spent over 100$. Staff was ok, not overly friendly but ok. Today i wanted to show the store to my wife and play a game with the cards i bought in THAT store. Was told that i have to buy merchandise for at least 10$. I explained that i bought products yesterday but this guy was totally nonresponsive! Explained to him that he should try to keep people IN the store not the other way. He‘s only response: that is very nice. Please AVOID this store whenever possible. Horrible staff!
Wouldnt recommend for Magic the Gathering:Cards at Montasy are more expensive than youll find elsewhere. Staff is patronizing and has that Oh boy Im in charge! energy, which I tried to overlook, because magic -- folks just want to have a good time right? But thatll come into play if theres an issue - as might happen during a tournament. In my case there were technical issues in a pretty ridiculous attempt at an online tourney, a lack of players (cant imagine why) and judges deciding that not waiting around by your PC between matches = DQ. None of this is fun. The staff will quickly and arbitrarily decide to tell the customer to grab their ankles and give pseudo-professional responses that I suspect are even ruder and more passive-aggressive than in person.I thought maybe it was just me and one special experienced because of their attempt to put together an online tournament that they messed up. So I asked one of my groups if they had similar experienced at the shop and Ill attach their reply:Bottom line: tons of better priced, welcoming and accommodating lgss for magic in Manhattan and elsewhere.
The folks at Montasy are knowledgeable and friendly. This seems to be the type of place that attracts team members that really love comics and games. Its more a comic and collectibles/collectible card games store than a board game store but theyre very good at that. They regularly have scheduled play in their game area too. If I could change one thing, I wish they sold some better snacks to eat while youre playing.
Its a nice change up from a regular comic store there more geared towards magic gamers and cards then comics. They have some new but mainly bronze and silver dollar stuff that they sell for 6-10 a book. Definatley wouldnt buy from them comics wise. Cards though yes 100%!
Its a good shop with a lot of varifying products but when it comes to some prices i dislike. An example as such is the planeqalker deck being $16. Though buying 2 would result in 30, i could easily find planewalker decks for 10 and thus all together be 20 which is a whole $10 less. I understand as well as needing a price to sit for not letting anyone freeload, but at the same time, it discouraged me from staying. The staff are nice, its only mostly the price of some products and the ability to stay is all.
Awful customer service for Magic the Gathering players. Once called to ask for details on an event and was told to just look online, “We don’t discuss prices over the phone” This evening I went into the store to purchase cards, I always try to buy from my local store and they had $0.25 cards marked at $2 and above. I asked if they could check the most recent price and was told, “We don’t do that”I guess they don’t talk about prices in person or over the phone!!
The selection wasnt amazing when it came to comics. They had customers in the back. I was browsing but no one offered to help me in my search. The two gentleman just stood and waited idly by, one staying seated. The other gentleman with eyeglasses, was on his phone the whole time. And the two women just did the same, one of them sitting down and the other was just standing by the computer closest to the tables and chairs, staring off into space. Coming from a shop from upstate, I expected better customer service from a shop on 5th Ave in NYC. The one star is for their poor service and failure to attempt to try to help me in my search for an item or items to purchase. They didnt seem interested in making a sale or working to make a sale for that matter. My advice to management is to find better workers who actually want to work to help the store and not just to hang out or text like how they do on their free time.
I came here for a MTG prerelease and the event was very well organized and the staff was friendly. Make sure you pre-register for the larger events since the space is tight. The chairs arent very comfortable either and theres only one bathroom but thats how these places work
I purchased a ticket to a pre-release event for myself and my partner, but when my partner couldnt attend, rather than attempting to be understanding (she had been there the day before), they dragged their feet, couldnt offer a refund in-store and pushed me to email only. They wouldnt even offer for me to pick up a kit at a later date, citing that she was a just a no-show and thus I forfeited the ticket. They then sold the kit later to another person (good deal for them, selling 1 kit twice). Overall, no sense of understanding or empathy for local TCG players.
Had my stuff stolen here, came back a week later and saw a guy playing with my stolen cards. He refused to give them back, wouldn’t let me look at them or make eye contact with me. Told the staff, they refused to help, kept telling me to send them an email about it. In the process of working with the police. This store is known for fostering theft and refuses to change the culture. Stay far away.
Overpriced, puny selection of mtg cards, ignorant staff who dont know anything about mtg to answer basic questions about certain card types. Also, their grab bag MTG special deal decks are a joke. Its just a pack of useless weak cards (with like ONE rare card) they just bundle up together cards that could never be used to make a powerful deck. I was stupid to fall for their trick. Dont be an idiot and purchase goods from them buy mtg cards online, they are much cheaper (card kingdom, Amazon, tcg etc.)
The managers know their stuff and will help you find anything sports, comics or gaming. The other employees do not know their stuff that well but will help. But do not go to the skinny kid that works there. He has been there more than a year and he still struggles with any question or just flat out gives you the wrong answer. Honestly a white board with frequently asked questions would be more helpful that that kid and you would not have to pay the board a salary or a rock bc you can use the rock as a paperweight.
Finally a place where I can play Yugioh with other Yugioh players!!!Im so glad I could finally find a place like this!Tournament prices are decent, $5But they should really start selling Yugioh cards dough. T-TIt looks real cool dough & the staff seems friendly. I would reccomend to friends👍
I would hardly call this comic store, anymore. They mostly push magic and yugioh card. Small shop with almost no back issues. Employees who know nothing about comics. Also dropped off old Magic card to sell, they said they would count them and check them out. I check back in a week and they lost them. LOST THEM. gave me no recourse for losing my cards. this place is crappy. Not being a troll. I just cant believe they lost my stuff and barely apologized
Never in my would I imagine a store treating a loyal customer soooo poorly. I had my bag stolen right off the table where I was opening packs. A bag containing a weeks worth of my chemo medication.(leukemia).Once I noticed my bag was gone I asked the working the counter to call the police, she refused, saying if you want to call you can.So, I did, once the police came I asked them if they wanted to retrieve footage from the store, at which time the officer said honestly, theres not much that can be done.... right. So, I took things into my own hands and called NBC news to see if they would show the video on the news to see if anyone recognized the guy who stole my bag. NBC asked me to retrieve the video from the store so they could do a story on this robbery.Montasy refused!!!!! Stating that they would only release the video to the police, those same police who said theres nothing that could be done. I even asked if they would email it directly to the news station....they refused and told me this is the last time they would be respondingI had spent close to $2000 in that shop in 5 weeks and this is how they treated not only a customer, but a human being whos chemotherapy medication was stolen by another one of their customers. All I wanted was the video of the incident. Is that too much to ask?!?!
They have a lot of tournaments for different games and nice play space but prize support is lack luster. One time I wasted a trip going there from the Bronx and I was 5 mins late to a Pokemon tournament and I wasnt allowed to enter. The following week the tournament started 30 mins late.
While a smaller store in the NYC area, Montasy still offered a wonderful selection of comic volumes and merchandise. Also of note, their signing event for Overwatchs Mercy, Sombra and Pharah Voice Actors was a great experience.Had a lot of fun and the staff was extremely professional and friendly. They are planning on having a Halloween event which I look forward to seeing.
Montasy Comics is an excellent place to play Trading card Games, buy comics and other collectables, and just have fun with friends!Montasy is located in the center for Manhattan, which is perfect because it is near every bus-stop, train station and has plenty of parking.I mainly come to Montasy for the Pokemon Trading card Tournaments. The head judge, Christopher, is one of the nicest people youll ever meet! Montasys other staff members are just as courteous and polite and are always willing to assist you with whatever you may want.Overall, Montasy Comics is as store worthy of your time! Stop by and see for yourself!5/5 stars!
They tell me they buy pokemon cards,i go there with 1 st edition 1999 cards and on cards that are very rare they try to rip me off on there value. Once they seen I was on to them trying to rip me off, they didnt want to buy the cards any more. Took a trip there for no reason
The price of the cards is crazy expensive compared to the market equivalent. The staff dont know which cards they have - nor where to find them - so you end up spending hours looking through binders only to be rewarded with 500% priced cards when you eventually find one or two that you need. Highly disappointed.
Never play Mtg here there are over priced and unfriendly to new players I called to store to find out there Schedule for the week and the lady over the phone would not give me the schedule I was told to check Facebook and that she was to busy to tell me what was going on this weekThere single are priced higher then star city games and they buy cards for half of eBay low which is ridiculous

2021-08-15Really fun little card/comic book store! They have a really balanced offering of both trading cards (Pokemon, sports, Magic, etc.), comic books, and Funko Pops! It was fun to go there and look around. The prices are on the higher end, as with any physical store, but we did buy some Funkos at a good price (and they have a buy 3 get 1 free deal!). The staff are very friendly. My only complaint is that it is a bit hard to enter and you have to press a doorbell and wait for them to let you up. We pressed it a few times and they didn’t respond at first so we almost walked away thinking it was closed.

2022-06-18Ive heard of this place over the years but never took the time out to actually visit until last week. I love what I saw, instantly. A huge emphasis on trading cards/collectible Card games, which I found to be a great angle for a comics shop in this day and age. Also a nice selection of back issues to help those of us who learn to get that one book missing from their collection

2022-05-28The customer service is amazing. They have such an awesome patience with kids. I took my lil brother there who was trying to sell his pokemon cards and one of the employee ( nicest guy) took his time to explain to us that it wasnt a wise decision and that we should wait to sell it. Any other store would have taken advantage of the situation and bought the cards for a cheap price . Montasy comics is an honest business who cares about is customers and we love it !!! Thank you

2022-04-12Visited this store in Manhattan with my son. Great selection of Magic the Gathering cards and they even have a decent number of singles. Plus it has a solid collection of comic books and funko pop figurines.

2022-04-15Ive always enjoyed each and every visit to Montasy Comics. I felt inclined to leave this review because I noticed a few others leaving lower ratings and pointing out that there is a (slight) mark up on prices compared to what you can find online, but thats honestly the case for any comic book/ game store. The truth is thats how these stores stay in business, and I have rarely found an item that was anymore expensive than it is at any other game store in the city, and in the very few instances that I have it was never anything more than a few cents. Their prices are more than fair. In fact, I find that their prices (especially for MtG and TCG accessories) are better than many of the other stores Ive visited, especially in Manhattan. Another thing to take into consideration when buying these products from a LGS like Montasy Comics is that its *convenient*. I personally really enjoy being able to go and purchase a product that Im eager to get my hands on without having to wait for a delivery after purchasing it online. Being able to add something to my collection in a matter of a few minutes rather than a few days will always be a bonus in my book.If youre a fan of Magic: the Gathering check out their singles display case. They have some really cool stuff, and Im willing to bet that something will catch your eye. They also have a really good variety of booster packs, and other products like commander precons, and even prerelease kits. My only complaint is that I didnt see any Dragon Shield sleeves, but thats not a big deal at all because they do still have a good variety of accessories. If thats my only complaint that I can think of Id say thats pretty good overall. I was really excited about the latest set (Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty) and they had it available at an excellent price the second it was released too.The customer service has always been very friendly and knowledgeable, and I really enjoy the overall atmosphere of the store. Im not sure if theyre allowing in store gameplay yet (they werent the last time I was in ~ 2 weeks ago), but Im very much looking forward to when they do. Im really glad that this place exists. Good, trustworthy game stores like it are a pillar in the TCG and comic community, and Im extremely grateful that we still have them in todays world because without them it would be so much harder to connect with other like-minded people who share my enthusiasm for my favorite hobbies.

2022-03-15I love this place, the staff here is amazingly kind and knowledgeable. The store is on the second floor and youll need to buzz in. They carry a variety of collectable goods as well as most of the collectable card games. They also offer a big open seating area in the back.

2021-05-28Our son wanted some Pokémon cards while we were here in NY on vacation and we found this place online. We found their prices to be a bit high compared to others but since we don’t know the area well and didn’t want to wander around looking for another place we just decided to go ahead and get them here. Once we got back to the hotel we noticed that the $10 booster pack was very poorly melted closed. It had obviously been tampered with/resealed. Not sure if it was by the store or their distributor but it was extremely disappointing.

2021-12-30This place has a great selection of comic books and Funko pops. Other fun stuff including cards, board games etc. You have to ring the buzzer to get in the street facing door then go up 1 flight. Nice people.

2021-10-07I love the feel and look of the store, just not a good place to buy. The staff is friendly but almost everything has scalper prices. I understand a mark up on items that are no longer in print but even new releases will be marked up. For me, its only a place of last resort as the prices you get are on par with what you can get on eBay.If you are looking to enter a hobby, this not a good place to start off. If you are know what prices should be, this might be good place to find some items that you need.
