What a change from the dreary Penn Station. Moynihan has great light and a spaciousness. You feel like you are in a European train station and finally Amtrak is more up to date. There is still some work to be done in developing the food options. Overall, this is such a positive change.
Ive always felt overwhelmed and lost at Penn Station. It always seemed congested and kinda dark. The new Moynihan Train Hall is so beautiful and futuristic. Great location right next to Penn. I felt comfortable waiting for my train in the ticketed section which had outlets everywhere for folks to charge their devices. Theres huge screens everywhere that display train times as well as staff on hand to answer questions. The food court area is a great place to grab a drink or a quick bite while waiting for your train. It has a range of eateries, accommodating to anyones food style.
Finally some more space to hang out while waiting for LIRR/Amtrak. Huge space, never thought this is what was behind the Post Office (which is accessible from the Hall). They will be opening a food hall there, and hopefully well see Penn Station open up again too. Its great to have this set up, always so astonished at how high the ceiling is!
Beautiful, new Jan 2021. This and Penn Station are across the street from each other, with the platforms underground shared between them. The Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge is fantastic: its worth being a Rewards Member to get access for lots of comfy spots to work or rest, excellent snack and drink choices. Nice, cool, and quiet! The Hall has not many shops or food spots open yet. Excellent restrooms; ladies with a nursing room. Only dislike: jumbotrons which are only decorative; waste of energy. Should be for schedules, or turn them off.
This extention of Penn Station does a great job of keeping that recognized look of Penn Station but making it modern and a nice experience to navigate. There are many screens displaying the train arrivals and track numbers, lots of security, really clean bathrooms and a good range of food courts to get a bite before your departure.
This is a huge improvement from the old Penn station. Its modern, bright, really aesthetically pleasing. Public restrooms are hospital clean. Theres lots of security around. Signage is very easy to follow. Only downside is currently the only stores open within is Starbucks(ridiculously long line ALL the time) and a card store. Other stores are coming, but dont indicate when. So if its best if youre taking a long trip on Amtrak or LIRR, be certain to get your food/drinks/snacks in the surrounding area beforehand.
This expansion of Penn Station blows Penn away in terms of design, architecture, efficiency, space, pathways, lighting, decor, art, and everything else. Try to visit when major departures are not near because the place can get packed and youd have to weave your way through travelers of all temperaments.Turns out this place used to be the citys main post office building until former Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan secured approvals and financing for reno. (Its said he shined shoes in Penn Station but likely Times Square--maybe both.)
Very clean and spacious!! They did a great job renovating this station. Theres also a good hall and shops. However, tons of other food shops and stores have yet to open here, so stay tuned!Navigating around Moynihan Train Hall is very easy and intuitive. Signs are everywhere and so are the track numbers.Full disclosure: I didnt have time to try the food spots here, but will certainly do so in the future.Bonus: the natural lighting here is 💯
Apart from completely transforming the Penn Station experience through sleek, modern architecture and streamlined thoroughfares, Moynihan Train Hall has some sneaky details that are worth exploring if you have time to look around. By the time it is complete with all of its food vendors, it should be a all around gem of a place to enter and leave NYC.
No access to benches without the purchase of a ticket, no trash cans, no commuter friendly design. The only redeeming quality of this train station is the ample sunlight from the glass ceiling. Hundreds of people sitting on cold tile, or their luggage, eating and drinking, waiting for their trains, it looks less like a transit hub for a commuters in a prosperous metropolis and more like a corporate parking lot designed to be so unfriendly that you’d want to leave immediately. Every wall is some shade of unkind gray that seems intentionally clinical, display screens with departure times are tall and narrow and very hard to see from a distance, and aside from access ramps in and out of the station, accessibility here seems like an afterthought. Thoroughly the worst train station I’ve ever traveled through.
Big and beautiful, Moynihan Trail Hall is the newest transportation hub in the Penn-station complex. I was surprised how clean and spacious it was (stark contrast to the building-next-door), with plenty of signage displaying track information. On the day I went, there was some bathrooms closed for maintenance. There was several place to purchase food, and waiting rooms as well.
Moynihan Train Mall is a transportation service located at 350 West 33rd Street, directly across the Penn Station on Eighth Avenue in the historic James A. Farley Post Office Building, New York, NY. It is a place where you will find group transport, local bus, railroad and shipping services. Here you will find connections with Amtrak and the LIRR.
This is new Moynihan Train Hall, still have work in progress...where you can access Amtrak. There are no area as yet to sit and eat as Food Court is not completed, but there are still some options available eg. Starbucks. The waiting area for the Amtrak train needs more seating, but as stated work is still in progress. But so far..Architecture looks On Spot👌🏾
Modern. Clean. Refreshing. The overhaul Penn Station so desperately has needed. Excited for the western half (towards 9th) to open. Maybe it can even attract some elite restaurants a la Grand Central!Love the natural sunlight and glass roofs. Hopefully the remainder of Penn Station gets a similar overhaul soon!
The experience of travelling by train in USA was not bad.(Amtrak) was the only option for long destinations intercity. Easy to book online ticket.- the station is clean and there’re many cafe shops.-they are not orgnized well, the ticket has no track number or seat number. you have to run to find yourself a seat (randomly), it took us 15 mints to find seat, we were walking while the train moving.
This was my first time on a train in probably 30 years. When I was a kid, the train announcers sat in booths and they could see people rush to whatever gate they called. I swear they announced gate changes just to laugh at people scrambling around below like mice in a maze. Lol. That was kinda fun but its definitely cleaner and more organized now. Not a ton of eateries or shops if you have to wait long but they have the basics. It felt safe and was easy to find my way around.
Beautiful modern take on 19th century urban terminuses. Much needed improvement to Penn Station and New York City transit in general. The one big miss of this train station and it would be an easy addition to add is the classic Split-flap display. Theres nothing like sitting in a train station and hearing that sound, that iconic flipping sound and wondering about all the people about to embark on their next journeys.
Everything is relative but certainly Moynihan compared to the old Penn station is light years apart. No longer do you find yourself in a lightless cavern, instead you are treated to a grand glass room which brings in plenty of natural light. Everything looked so clean, it was very uplifting. There is still work to be done with the food court and bring some of the other amenities online, but travelers in the Northeast should be so much happier.
Moynihan Train Hall is way better and spacious than the older hall below Madison Square Garden, and not to mention the existing LIRR Hall which is under renovation and not all that safe. The infrastructure of Moynihan train hall does replicate the Penn Station of the past, which was built in 1910 and then demolished in 1963. The skylight allows natural light to flow in during the daytime, bathrooms are sparkly and clean, and its very easy to transfer from LIRR to Amtrak services and to AirTrain JFK without having to walk from one train hall to another. Easy to read infotainment screens, and working elevators and escalators without problems. It is all thanks to former US Senate Daniel Patrick Moynihan that his dream of building a new train hall to resemble the old Penn Station that was torn down in 1963 had come true in January 2021 when this new train hall opened. Very nice place to be while waiting to catch your train.
Wow! What an unbelievable transformation it is to access Pennsylvania Station through Moynihan Train Hall! It’s a night and day difference from what we’ve been accustomed to for so many years here in the city. This train hall is a structure that was designed by the same architect that built the old Penn Station, that was torn down in the 60s. The city did a wonderful job in bringing in people who kept the original feel of this building and modernized it for today’s standards. It’s bright, beautiful and most importantly, CLEAN!If you’re traveling through Penn Station then you’re going to thoroughly enjoy traversing this new train hall. It’s what this area should have never lost so many years ago, but fortunately it’s gained back a building like this, worthy of this being the first thing people traveling into the city should be greeted with! It may not be the original station, but those who loved that building will appreciate this one and should be happy that it is here and puts back some of the history the city lost, upon the demolition of the previous structure.
Moynihan Station was just completed. Its the station for LIRR & Amtrak. In addition to access to railroad it is a very nice place to visit. The architecture is very nice. Easy to get to. Its located between 31st-33rd street & eighth avenue. You can get there via of LIRR, Amtrak, NJ Transit, and the IRT #1,2, and 3 trains, and the IND A&C Trains. Youre in midtown Manhattan so there are many sights to see, theaters, restaurants, and events. Great area for everyone.
Beautiful new station at Penn Station with restaurants and cafés. They have H&H Bagels, Magnolia Cupcakes, Ladurée, Jacob’s Pickles (coming soon) and more. There is a lounge for ticketed travelers, charging plugs at the bar in the food hall and a place to fill your water bottle.
An absolutely gorgeous station. I am so glad the city took the time to construct this and elevate our travel experience from the old halls of Penn station. The natural light and open space make it feel some much more modern and grand. There isn’t much there yet in terms of food and shopping but that will come in time. There’s also not many places to sit but that’s probably the point to cut down on some of the nonsense. One small issue is the giant screens they have promoting NYS tourism. They decided to use cartoon images of state parks. Why wouldn’t they use real images of gorgeous locations like Letchworth state park and the other places they are promoting?! Hopefully that gets upgraded to match the taste level of the rest of the station.
Pros: Beautiful, bright, clean! Cons: almost no food services yet and bathrooms are a little tricky to locate. Arrived for my train nice and early to allow time for restroom and grabbing a snack and by the time I was able to find the open bathroom upstairs (one was being cleaned and there was no sign to indicate where to go for an open one) the lines at Blue Bottle and Magnolia were so long I had no time before my train boarded. Im sure these things will improve but for now I will stick to boarding on the old Penn station side or bring my own snacks. Update: Food Services are much improved and another bathroom has been opened downstairs since I last visited. Really, its the little things in life that matter. I now look forward to departing from the Moynihan Hall side of the station.
Looks and smells new. Escalators are a bit bumpy. There was only a Starbucks and Bluebottle coffee shop as far as beverage and food goes. Food hall opens in fall of 2021. The metro lounge was nice but lacked any beverage or food options. Although it was pretty empty during the time of the review, staff was extremely diligent with cleaning duties and covid procedures.
This was a beautiful station with lots of space for new shops. They made it simple to find out how to connect with the Amtrak either by guide or following the signage that was everywhere. Just one little wrinkle, they need to try getting some shuttle carts for the elderly and handicapped.
Such a beautiful building and welcome to the Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge. Such a pity there is no bandwidth due to several people who seem to have set up shop here. WIFI should be available to all in an otherwise perfect place. Had to use my European phone just to post this🤠
Clean and new looking, still under construction. Homeless and EDPs (emotionally disturbed people) still allowed to wander freely, do that adds fun and excitement. Maybe the new mayor will understand that people dont want to be stepping in urine and getting yelled at by guys wearing garbage bags as they are trying to find their train.
I love how open it is.. When it first opened I thought the same thing but I also was under the assumption that as it got busier it would get crowded but Im very pleasantly surprised that they built this place so big that it seems almost impossible to get that crowded feeling you get from the LIRR.
The new station is beautiful and a welcomed improvement from NY Penn, but there is very limited seating in this new station. Too bad because I would have loved to sit and look at the architecture while I waited for my train. Any patrons who sat on the ground were promptly asked to stand. The ticketed waiting room has a dark low ceiling that does not look very comfortable so I stood with all my bags to wait.
Beautiful space but the acoustics are horrendous and the announcements are impossible to hear. There are beautiful massive screens that you’d think could display announcements, but that would make too much sense, so instead they are just showing advertisements. Also very limited seating, so unless you want to sit in one of the small crowded ticketed passenger seating areas, you must resort to standing or sitting on the floor. I actually prefer the other Penn station because there’s a large seating area and plenty of shops and restaurants. Who knows if the food hall at Moynihan will be open in Fall 2021 like it says.
This is a step in the right direction, New York City. This train hall is beautiful, modern, and enjoyable to use. The Amtrak secluded, ticketed waiting area is a fantastic addition that feels like waiting at a gate at LAX instead of crammed in the corridors of Penn Station. Now move Madison Square Garden and do this makeover to Penn Station proper and well really be in business.
A bit complicated to find with all the construction in Penn Station, but once you get there, it good. Lots of seats and plenty of screens to tell you where your train will be. I didnt see a info person... (doesnt mean there wasnt one). Oh, and good variety of food/snacks.
The new Moynihan train hall is delightful! The restored post office has beautiful lighting through the atrium ceiling, a pleasant and spacious waiting area. There are a few cafes open but more restaurants and shops to come later this year. The security staff are very attentive, ensuring that queues are followed, bags are not left unattended, and no one is sitting on the floor. Canine units throughout. Its also very clean, I saw someone drip coffee while walking and about 15 min later janitorial staff cleaned up the (very small) spill. Hopefully they keep up the good work! Its an easy and pleasant experience, particularly in comparison to the rest of Penn across the street, for Amtrack and LIRR passengers. The new train hall will definitely influence my train vs flight decisions going to Boston or VA.
Newly built rail station. Very well laid out and organized. There will be a new food court in the fall of 2021. Very nice waiting areas and a Starbucks not too far from the waiting area. I was on Amtrak and the staff was very polite and announced the train numbers as well as I was able to see it on the monitors. There were electric outlets in the waiting area and there were all so tables you could sit at if you wanted to use your laptop. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
This new Train hall is gorgeous ! The one peeve we have is this- there is no central information board listing the arriving and departing trains. There are information monitors all about the station but they are spread out and hard to find. A Central information board like that at Grand Central station would be very helpful. Aside from that, this station is simply gorgeous and worth a visit.
What a beautiful piece of marvel. Reminded me of the Rookery building, Chicago circa. 1883. After the Grand Central terminal and Penn Station, how do you top such great stations and architectural buildings, but they managed to. Doesnt appear as an Amtrak station at all.And not only is the train station designed well but is maintained impeccably and was extremely clean, main floor as well as the tracks.
🚞💺🚉🚆🚄🚅🚇🚃🛤🏢. Opened on January 1, 2021. Moynihan Trail Hall is a clean and very modern upgrade to Penn Station. The bathrooms are clean and plenty, and there is tons of natural light due to the glass ceilings. In the center, there is a four-faced clock (a nice feature that reminds me of Grand Central Terminal). As of December 2021, the food court is closed. But, there is a Blue Bottle, Starbucks, a pharmacy and a flower shop inside 🧑⚕️☕️
Was very impressed by the hall, was bright, clean, everything well marked and seems efficiently organized. I spent several hours in the amtrak ticketed waiting room and was very impressed by the staff there. Always providing answers with a smile, they seemed to know everything about every train and even though they got the same questions over and over they never became impatient.
At Moynihan, no business class boarding is available unless you can get into the Metropolitan lounge even if youve purchased a business class ticket. Hot food items restricted to first class Acela or Amtrak select premium members or pay 50 bucks to get a gate pass to access the Metropolitan lounge. Website claims that food hall (outside the lounge) will open fall 2021 to the general public but its almost November and theres only flowers and coffee available for purchase. Dont count on finding any restaurants open on 8th Ave if you have a train at 0800 on a Sunday. The old Penn station was more accessible and had a lot of food options in comparison.
Its a gorgeous building, and a train hall worthy of New York for the first time since the 1960s and the terrible destruction of Penn Station. However there is no seating here (except for paying Amtrak customers) because the city and state are cowardly afraid of unhoused people. Until the city and state pull their heads out of the sand to find a long term solution to this problem, this station will remain a beacon to the inequality in this country.
Clean, open, and rather great looking train station or hall. For Amtrak riders there is a separate waiting area with bathrooms. In the main hall there is a Starbucks and Marigold Bakery. I am sure there are other businesses but those are the two I remember seeing. Rather easy to navigate and the escalator for the trains are in the main hall.
Much cleaner and more open than the old station, partly through nice architecture, partly because they dont let non passengers linger. Two faults: its impossible to hear announcements because the acoustics are bad, and they use the giant screens to show ads rather than train information. Despite these faults, its an improvement over its predecessor.
This train hall is all show and no substance. There is only seating in the ticketed waiting room, which has very limited space, and security guards literally force you to stand up if you are sitting on the floor. Inaccessible to young children, families, disabled people, people who want to sit AND socially distance. Exemplary anti-homeless architecture.
Are you looking for a train station with no amenities? Then this is the place for you! It doesnt even have any of those elitist chairs and benches. You can sit on the floor without any access to restaurants or convenience stores so you can get the true 1800s travel experience!
A big giant empty room. The actual paid passenger seating area looks nice but is terrible with extremely uncomfortable seating, particularly if you have physical issues that require proper ergonomic seating. The seating area is also tiny compared to the actual available space. For all the money that was spent on this place, I expected a more useable space.
This is the cleanest train station I have ever been to, everything is basically brand new on the inside. Lots of large screens to find your train and a really nice waiting area that you have to have train tickets to get into. No food options yet, but the food court is being built and set to open late 2021.
Beautiful new train station and much nicer than Penn Station. Once all the construction is done and all the storefront areas are complete, this will be a superb train station in NYC. Theres also some cool artwork of 3D buildings on the ceilings at one of the entrances. Well worth a visit
I do not have any photos to share, but they probably would not do justice, especially iPhone photos. I can imagine in a year or so when every nook and cranny and restaurant and bar is open (especially the roof), this place will be buzzing. The station is filled with natural light from the beautiful transparent ceiling. They appear to be renovating the post office also. I think this station is better than the Oculus.
Clean and bright, yes. Signage is abominable. Where are the arrivals? I made a complete circuit of the station looking for the Amtrak arrivals, only to be told that the only arrivals sign is facing sideways inside the ticket office. With the website also abominable, its impossible to know the status of the trains. As an aside, I couldnt find LIRR arrivals either. How about putting up a large central information board, like in REAL train stations the world over?
The entire ceiling is a skylight bringing in toms of natural light. Comfortable seating area for ticketed passengers. Several escalators down to train platforms. Only issue is that no food available yet but I assume it will come. Beautiful inverted skylight of NYC skyscrapers at the 31st street entry.
All style, no substance. Theres nowhere to sit down except for these tiny corrals where youre all cooped together in ticketed passenger areas. If you want your space, you HAVE to stand around and hold all your bags. Sitting on the floor or leaning is not permitted. They have a food court with ONE restaurant (a salad place), but theres no seating anywhere in the station to eat your food. I had to prop my salad bowl against a charging station. There are also no trash/recycling cans except inside a random cake shop or inside those weird people-corrals. I get that they want to discourage loitering, but this station is *terrible* if you have to wait any considerable time for your train.
What a disaster of design. This station fails every stage. Huge advertising signage blasts light out at customers who stand below struggling to find a train timetable and forced to stand. Train times are announced moments before a train is due, with staff then screaming at customers to form a line and berating anyone who doesnt comply.
This place is straight up an embarrassment.Seeing that theres literally no seating I felt so bad for the guy who had to go around and ask people to not sit on the floor. I can tell he was walking on eggshells because Im sure hes been screamed at just for doing his job. This is like such a sad pathetic excuse for a train station. I know next time I come to New York I will not be traveling by train because of how awful the experience was being at the train station.
It was nice. Keep in mind it just opened up so there is nothing there so far. The general waiting room is nice and comfortable. Its way more organized than before. I havent been in the metropolitan lounge yet but I will soon. When everything opens up this should be 5 stars.
Finally a somewhat modern train station compared to the decrepit LIRR / NJ Transit. Hopefully they keep up with the maintenance vs the LIRR. Still doesnt meet Metro North in terms of function and on time performance. The trains the day I was present were all late without explanation. Easily accessible from the LIRR in terms of distance but signage is poor in my opinion.
This new train station is amazing. Reminds me of the European rail stations. Very classy and clean besides easy to access the trains coming and going. Plenty of restrooms and places to eat on the second floor. Plenty of postings of trains even the Long Island Railroad schedule. You can actually travel without worry.Well done, NY.
At last, Penn Station has some glory again! Wide-open spaces, pristinely-clean, sensible, easy-to-read signs and wayfinding, grand entrances to the tracks, a genuinely nice Metropolitan Lounge. THIS is what the intercity train station in the largest city in the US should look like!
The new Moynihan Station in NYC is wonderful, open and spacious with the entire ceiling a Skylight roof. This used to be the united States Grand Post Office. It was a magnificent building and everyone enjoyed using it. But Amtrak did an amazing job of transforming this landmark building into a modern transit hub and it is a work of art.The station was recently opened, only few months ago and its only my second time there. But one of the nice improvements are the direct escalators to and from the trains. However, the information boards are too small and are located in the seating and ticket areas on the east and west sides of the hall and can only be read up close. The station still feels a bit, like a work in progress and perhaps more improvements are on the horizon. But one improvements thats severely missing: is the large information board at the center of the station... similar to the one at Penn Station, which can be seen by everyone.
Very beautifully designed new station hub in NYC. Lots of space and design to feast the eyes. Clean and cozy place to be at. I liked the clock above in the middle. But I think over a billion dollars to make was way too much money, hence only 3 stars. Greed and tax payers fork the bill.
As a long time New Yorker, im so disappointed in the new Moynihan train station. I’m sure my tax $ went to this and it’s just not good. There’s no seating while you wait for your train, there’s no food or drink places, you still have to run to your train at the last second (lirr I know). Sen. Moynihan would be embarrassed. Take a lesson from metro north and grand central. It’s just not great. If this is our infrastructure spending? Do better. It’s prettier than the old Penn, but we WANTED SO MUCH MORE. UGH. another disappointment.
If youre a New Yorker, chances are youre familiar with the long and sordid history of Penn Station. This train hall is a dream come true compared to the subterranean labyrinth thats still in use today... Theres still construction under way, but whats already open to the public gives you some hope of whats possible.
Even though the trains are accessible just like Penn station, Moynihan train hall has issues that need to be fixed. First, picking and choosing which state you do baggage check in. Its a real inconvenience when you travel to the station, but now you have to carry it to the train yourself. In addition to lifting it over the large gap between the train and platform. Next, the lack of humility in the workers. The customers are not at fault in their decision to take a job that requires them to show up at 3am, so the attitude, yelling, rolling of the eyes, especially when the customer is being nice is totally unnecessary. I believe that the changes arent making it better for the customers its more a nuisance.
Incredibly gorgeous building right across the street from the decrepit mess that is Penn station. It is very pretty both outside and in, well-lit with a beautiful skyroof, clean (so far, ha), spacious, and comes with the promise of restaurants and shops in the future (there is a Starbucks and an indie coffee shop in there currently). It has an underground connection back to Penn station and the subway system too.Took off a star because, exasperatingly enough, there aren’t any benches or chairs. Or enough trash cans, for that matter. Really? Hopefully that changes.

2022-03-21I havent had a chance to catch an Amtrak train from here yet, but the station is beautiful. Bright, spacious, clean, great design and architecture. I couldnt find a trashcan (had to go in Starbucks) and the only seating besides in the restaurants, are the few seats in the small Amtrak ticket holders section.. the walkway that connects Moynihan hall to the subway seems to be a haven for the homeless

2022-01-24Well lit area. Interesting use of structure across upper ceiling. Big time bold NYC big screen videos around the upper walls. Some are ads but the best are the ones advertising New York. My suggestion is less ads and More NYC. The station is super clean. However I had to walk a mile (just kidding) to find a restroom area. Perhaps a few way-show signage would assist. (one of the restrooms was out of service:( so it was a long walk). Its a BeaUtiful station.

2022-07-19What an amazing, magnificent, incredibly beautiful and clean place to see and be in. Massive, so much space, so many areas, avenues and choices in and out. You will get lost and confused the first few times you come here so ask directions so you dont miss your train (if here for train). If here just to behold the magnificence, e ready to have yor breath taken away. Still cant wrap my head around the pace after being here a few times for trains to various places. Definitely worth the visit. Enjoy the pics.

2022-05-05It’s worth a visit to the Moynihan Train Hall even if you aren’t planning to take a train from Penn Station! The new building has beautiful architectural features that help to create the best parts of the original Penn Station! This will become a major tourist destination and it’s free!

2022-06-25Tons of food options (including alcohol) to grab a bite for the ride, flower shops and news stands, resting space for ticket holders and amazing glass ceiling architecture to gaze for all. They have a Starbucks, lovepop, Walgreens, pizzeria, bar, burger joints etc. The outside of the train hall is also a great work of architecture.

2022-04-06This is one of the best train station I hv ever visited. This is an expansion of Pennsylvania station. From here the all intercity and commuter trains moves in the NY City.Inside the hall you will find a special state of art Interior and sculpture of The Manhattan City is hung from the ceiling. When you enter the hall a euphoric melody make you feel that you are in a orchestra hall that amaze you.

2021-12-05It was really nice to see this new addition to Penn Station. It’s bright, well designed, and most importantly, CLEAN. After years of walking through what felt like a dreadful station this new renovation is quite welcomed. NY deserved better and she’s finally getting a taste of it.
