My Hero in other cities:
We just picked up a few sandwiches after a years absence.... Did the bread change? The bread was more akin to what you get at subway, soft mushy and a bit under baked, not the crusty delight that I remembered. I cant figure out, did it change, or did we? Still, we all felt it was kind of ordinary, not bad, but not special as we recalled. Lost a star.Old review...........Old style delis have disappeared in the onslaught of Subway. Fortunately, this one survives and even thrives. A real local joint run by warm and friendly people. The food is great, the staff is great and the place is 70s LI forever! Real bread with good texture, not that super soft fresh baked substitute. The $7.50 (average price) sub is a way better value than any $5 footlong. My biggest regret? Ive lived in Merrick for over 15 years and it took me that long to discover My Hero. Though I had head of it before, it took the enthusiastic recommendation of an All Island cab driver taking us home from LaGuardia Airport to get us to go there. Thank You!!!
Ive been here multiple times and it has always been great.. Best subs/heroes/hoagies in LI hands down. Spoke to a woman who drive 45 min just to grab a couple of heroes for the family. No dine in due to covid but there are tables outside. Prepare to wait because they can and will get extremely busy. You can also call your order in ahead which is recommended.Although I dont mind grabbing a drink and sitting outside talking with the locals from all walks of life. Before you know it, they yell out your name when your order is ready. From the The Champ, The Italian, Chicken Cutlet, Roast Beef, Chicken or Tuna salads, you cant go wrong here. If you order the large you will definitely have enough to eat later. They also cater!
I placed a phone order for pickup. Now why do you usually call in an order? Too avoid waiting in line, correct? So I placed the order, waited the 15 minutes they said it would take and then went to pick it up. When I arrived the lunch line was out the door onto the sidewalk. So I walk in the opposite door where the register is to pick up my order and am told that only catering pickups can be made here and that Id have to go back out and wait in line. WHAT??? That is the most ridiculous logic Ive ever heard. So now Im back out waiting another 15 minutes at least to pick up an order i placed on the phone over 30 minutes ago. Why bother taking phone orders if you are going to make the customer wait in line anyway? Kind of defeats the purpose no?
My buddy Nick told me to try this place today . Me and wife went there, I walked in dressed as a dinosaur. I ordered a meatball hero and two chicken cutlet Heroes to try after eating the meatball hero it was incredible . We went back in and ordered two more meatball hero and a shrimp parmesan hero it was probably some of the best hot heroes Ive ever eaten. there was only one problem it doesnt say on the menu that the shrimp is coconut shrimp and my wife is highly allergic to coconut. Thank God for epipens, but that will not stop us from going back there eating other food from there. I highly recommend everybody go there and try their food you will not be disappointed! its phenomenal, the meatballs, the chicken and the sausage and peppers are incredible its its like a having a religious experience eating there. and the people that work there are super nice, super helpful. I am happy my friend sent me there and Yes Im going to eat there every day if I can. PS the owner son is incredible nicest guy, knowledgeable about his products. Thank you for treating us like family.. hope to see you soon.
Buda Bing Buda Bang! This little sandwich shop is big on flavor! Sandwiches are fresh, flavorful, reasonably priced and ingredients used are top notch. We tried a few sandwiches and all them were mouth watering and hit the right spots. Our top pics are the meat ball hero, chicken cutlet and the shrimp paramsian which were all completely satisfying. We are still going down the list and will update on the other options. Very glad we found this place and its our hero as well.
Like this place needs another 5 star review. Its the best sandwich shop on the island. And its been the best for years. If you know, well then you know and the locals like me know. They are not fancy but they understood a simple concept. We the customer, want meat on our sandwich! Take my advice and get a Reuben over there or Italian. Then you will understand. Only problem is you wont want to go anywhere else but here
Went here for the first time. Service was good as the person who took my order was attentive and offered suggestions. The sandwich was well make with plenty of meat and add ons that all goes into a good sandwich. The bread was fresh as was all of the ingredients. The sandwich was so filling we were both only able to eat half, after getting a large oneNow I understand why there was a line, as it is worth the wait and the price.
Absolutely terrible service and mediocre food at best. Stood outside for 40 minutes waiting for two parm heros. Tried calling nonstop before I arrived to place order ahead of time. Once I showed up oddly enough I didnt even here a sing phone ring. Absolutely terrible horrific customer service. The older gentlemen came off as pompous. Youd think places like this would be first come first serve. This experience was not something I was alone on either. 1 out of every three customers who walked out during my lengthy wait were livid. Will not go back. Rather search for another place that caters to the folk that pays their bills
Amazing, family run business!! Food is the freshest as they are cooking it to keep up with the crowd!! And, yes, its crowded!! But the line moves fast as they have many behind the counter preparing customers orders... A hometown eatery with a few indoor and outdoor seating that we visit sometimes more than once a week!!! Chicken Club is my favorite! See you there!
Wow. Enjoy a delicious Italian hero or roast beef and get it with the works and you will not be disappointed. Try their thin cut chicken cutlet hero , its breaded to perfection and always fresh and delicious. The line may look long but it goes quick and worth the wait. Great to even grab a hero or two before heading to the beach. Try it, you will be back.
I was turned onto this hero shop by a family member. I frequented it many times last year as well as earlier this year till June. Their subs were great. BUT. The last 3 times I got a hero from here it was terrible. I have a 3 strikes youre out policy. I am sitting in front of my hero waiting for my Thai food a few doors down. I thought about grabbing a sandwich tomorrow but their consistamcy is unreliable. The key to a great resterant is consistamcy good food.
Best of the old time hero places left. Great service, super fantastic portions, going here for 31 years, for her Subways, forget Jersey mikes, blimpie, and firehouse heroes, nobody compares to My Hero, fine quality meats at great prices. CASH ONLY, ATM AVAILABLE. YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY YOU CAME!
My Hero makes fantastic heros. The Bread is fresh and soft and the salads are fresh and full of flavor. The coldcuts are good quality. The only downside is they are cash only. Highly recommend The Champ with The Works. The place is quite small but they have tables to sit and enjoy your food. They also have outdoor seating.
Hands down, this has been the best place to get a hero for over 25 years and it still is! I have been getting hero’s from this place my entire life and even when following a strict fitness diet the past 10 years, my heros chicken club is my go to cheat meal. One would think any place can make a chicken club hero but let me tell you, my hero does something magical when they make the chicken club! From the bread, the shredded lettuce, tomatoes, the perfectly seasoned and cooked chicken cutlets, the bacon and of course can’t forget the mayo... and it’s a great price for the size, you won’t find a better hero anywhere!! On top of all that the service is great! Very friendly!
The place to go to get a sandwich in North Bellmore. Its got a nice, local deli-style interior with seating both indoors and out. Get here early, though- its not uncommon for the line to be out the door, regardless of the season, and people WILL wait all year round, thats how you know youre getting quality food. A single star is deducted for being cash-only, but I was heavily considering just giving it the 5 stars it otherwise deserves.
30 minutes for a chicken cutlet sandwich is pretty unreasonable. There were only a few people infront of me, and others who ordered after got their food first. I was standing outside as youre required to do in the rain, and the guy at the counter kept making eye contact with me and ignoring it. Finally he asked if I had ordered yet, and suprise suprise he had it done in 2 minutes.
HOLY MOLY. Truly BLESSED to have had this hero shop pop up in my maps before we passed it on the highway during our roadtrip for the day! We tried The Champ and Roast Beef Melt for our first try, both were huge and mouth-wateringly delicious!!Cash only, ATM on site! Were based in Brooklyn and well definitely be back every chance we get!!
Chicken Club is the best! Just get it and dont ask questions. I prefer mine with American cheese. The Champ is s close second especially if you like Italian meats. Throw The Works on it while youre at it.Their macaroni and potato salads arent bad, but the fresh chicken salad is perfect.Let me just say that if you think you can get a good deli hero anywhere, then you havent been here. The bread they use is what makes it.Dont let the dated decor fool you, this place is a diamond in the rough.BTW, cash only but there is an ATM right outside.
I really wasnt impressed with my visit. After waiting 30 minutes for my sub, I was expecting to be blown away. The sub was average to below average. The chicken cutlets there are dry and chewy. I felt like spitting it out. The only compliment I can leave about this place is the reasonableness in prices. For me to return they will need to work on their snail pace service and their ingredients.
The owner was insensitive and very rude when I asked if my daughter who has a peanut allergy could order from the menu. He said he doesn’t do allergies and ask your doctor. Having an allergy is not a choice !! Being respectful , kind and professional is !! Your treatment of my family was hurtful and unnecessary. I am posting this in hopes you treat the next individual or family with a food allergy with regard. Knowing your menu and what ingredients are in your food and making it safe for all your patrons is not that hard. DO BETTER!!
This is not your ordinary sandwich shop. Easy to see right off of Jerusalem Ave in Bellmore. Long lines but worth the wait. Dont go in and order just a turkey on whole wheat. Order one of their custom made house sandwiches on a hero. I recommend the Champ. Or any of their chicken cutlets hero with Bacon and cheese. You cant go wrong. We will definitely be going back.
Dont let the long line, which can extend outside of the door, discourage you - its worth the wait! For my first experience I had the hero called The Champ, which consisted of ham cappy, proscutini, Genoa salami, and provolone with the works (lettuce, tomato, onion, salt, pepper, oil and vinegar). The sandwich had just the right amount of meat and the perfect ratio of vegetables to condiments. The bread was perfectly soft, but firm enough to hold up to the condiments. The taste was delicious, not overpowered by the provolone, which can be the case with many Italian sandwiches. I ordered a 2 foot hero for a party Im having. Im satisfied that I made the right choice. Do yourself a favor and make the trip and taste for yourself. Check out the menu online and call in your order - youll thank me later.😉
This place is the most awesome sandwich shop you could go to. Old school and I love it!! Prices are almost as amazing as the sandwiches!!but not nearly as awesome as the owner Anthony, he is the bomb!! CATERING IS THE BEST YOU COULD ASK FOR!! Dont doubt me try it you will never be sorry!!
Incredibly busy sub shop. Mostly carry-out but there are a few tables inside and 3 picnic tables on the front porch. Surprisingly, they accept neither credit nor debit cards, but the menu says they accept checks. I paid cash so I dont know if there are bad surprises if you whip out your checkbook. There is an ATM machine on the front porch that Im sure charges heavily for cash withdrawals. I didnt try the ATM machine. The menu encourages you to phone your order in, but they get so busy that from noon until about 3PM they leave the phone off the hook. The girl at the register explained that you can phone your order in to them in the morning and tell them what time you will pick it up.Entrance is the door on the right. They were so busy on Saturday ~1PM that i was there, I had to wait on the porch until there was room inside to let me in.I had a small Cuban sandwich. Decent sized sub, fresh bread. With a Snapple and a bag of chips it came to $12.67, which I thought was a little on the high side.Parking is limited. I was amused by the numerous large signs warning you not to park in the adjacent, mostly empty Carvel parking lot. That Carvel was my next stop after my sandwich was eaten. A chocolate/vanilla twist cone was a perfect dessert on a hot July day. The reprint of an old article on the wall about Fudgie the Whale was interesting reading as I slurped at my cone. They seem to have exactly one chair indoors and one wider chair outside. I got there on foot from a podiatrist appt in N. Bellmore. I guess the assumption is most people will sit in their car. Carvel was not busy.I noticed a burger place across the street from My Hero. Going to be hard to decide whats for lunch next time I am in that neighborhood.
I have been going to MY HERO since the 1970’s. Except for one remodel which was basically opening up a back space to add a couple tables and if I remember correctly replace the beverage case and put at the other end of the counter other then that same old same old. For a good long while the Hero’s hadn’t changed when the original Dom was there. He and his family could be seen and heard not only cooking but making sandwiches and shooting the breeze. Its confusing to a newcomer how the whole system works at this store since it has two doors and no apparent sign that says line starts at this end. There are are usually any number of supplies around the outer parameter by where it shows they have little to no storage space and it looks like a hot mess besides the confusion of where this line starts. Inside you have the line going to leave your order that runs along the few tables there so besides expecting to use up your lunch hour just to get your hero even if you have infinite time you will still have an issue securing a table. There are tables on the outside but they are not always the cleanest. (When i was a kid i remember this building being either a golf store or bowling store to buy supplies.) The parking is terrible. Out front is several spots on Jerusalem Ave which is a terribly busy street.. The back parking lot has only several spots and is so tight to pull in one way and out the other. The carvel used to share its property and allow people to park there but for many years its been roped off. Now to the food. Over the years its been up and down at best . Once you can order the chicken parm and its ok then next it is a very hard couple of piece of chicken. Years ago it was a nice size hero that you could really bite into. The sausage and peppers while good is never consistent on how much is on the sandwich. Of course the CHAMP is delicious but they barely put any of the spices or oil and vinegar even if you ask for it on there heavy. Potato and Egg is ok as is any of the other sandwiches but still so skimpy. The “New Dom” that is there is a nice man he has been there many more years than the first but i feel he really slim lined this Gold mine down to make even more of a profit and the prices do not sync with the value of what you are receiving . My biggest bone to pick though is the payment system of only Cash. HMMMM now a days people either use their ATM card , CC or an app on their phone to pay. He is stead fast about Cash. They tell you there is an ATM machine across the street or one in the bar next door. If i wanted to cross Jerusalem Ave and chance being killed for a hero I would be out of my ever loving mind and going into the bar next door in the afternoon is not something i am interested in doing AND paying a fee to that machine and my bank. I find it insulting and uncalled for . But he doesnt have to change his ways because there is no place i guess like the IRS saying he has to accept anything other then cash and that honestly makes me uneasy about any business who chooses to do that especially one that never puts much into its business yet slim lines just about as much as it can. I can not honestly say that I have enjoyed a sandwich from MY HERO in many years and add in all the other major issues I chose to no longer go to this place.
What can I say this spot has it all fresh heros, salad and catering. I have the chicken parmesan hero and I was amazing. I also had a fresh Roast Pork sandwich with broccoli rabe and fresh mozzarella, wow the roast pork was so fresh and tasty I dream about it sometimes at night. A great hero spot in Merrick a must visit in Long Island.
Havent been in a few years, havent been working in the area, used to go regularly.I have tried on occasion, but they were either closed for vacation , or just not open yet in a.m. as I was driving by, it the line was just to long for me to hit during work.Luckily yesterday I was able to pass by in the afternoon and got my old fav.Around lunch time there is usually a long line out the front door. The line does move though 15-25 mins.I went in after 3 just a few people a ahead, ordered the champ which is basically an Italian with the works which is lettuce, onions, seasoning, oil, vinegar....The bread, meat, veggies are all fresh they just know what theyre doing and they do it well. You can get a small, or large which is either half or full hero 6 or 12 inch approx. It tasted exactly how I remembered it and if thats the case the chicken club, eggplant, chicken parmesan combo are probably still just as good.Wish this place was closer to home.I will definitely try getting back more often.
When I Was Living in North Merrick My Family Would Always Be Going to Our Favorite Sandwich Shop For Just About Every Thing From Their Sandwich Called the Champ Or A Hamburger Or Even Chicken Cutlet Parmigiana And When I was Living Right Across the Street From My Hero I Was Always There Eating Their Food Or Eating With My Friends I Wished That They Would Be Able To Come to The Town of Brookhaven And Open Up A My Hero Here For the Town of Lake Grove to Enjoy!😓
Got the special, rost pork, broccoli rabe and melted mozzarella on a hero took forever to get it and when I opened it up it was so wet everything just fell out of the bread and onto the floor and on my pants rolled it up and threw it away. It may have tasted ok but I couldnt eat it the way it was served what a waste of money. Lines in place was to long. Watch what you order not every thing is that good.
Comeonman...if you ever find yourself in the area you owe it to yourself to try My Hero or Da joint as we call it. It makes the BEST heros. Not too much of anything and nothing is lacking. Great hero bread and 2 sizes. Small or large...get the large. You can take the rest home lol. No ceedit cards though, only cash. Fresh meats on heros and a new hero of the day daily. We call it da joint because it easier and cooler to say Ill meet you at da joint they have a few tables to sit and eat there as well. Family owned for as long as Ive been a bellmoron and thats forever and the owners always give back to the community hiring local kids and donating to boy scouts, H.S. etc. Give them a try. You wont be disappointed
Sandwhiches are unreal. Best you can find in Nassau county. I dare you, I double dog dare you to find a better sandwich. Carvel owner is a fool. Instead of towing your car, one would think he would work something out with My Hero and let you park in his lot and then have Carvel coupons stacked on the counter at My Hero for money off ice cream. Maybe drive a little business his way. But what do I know? Im just a washed up sandwich eater.

2022-07-11Heroes are amazing. But two weeks ago we ordered and got to say sandwiches were a little on the thin side for $12 and up u would think it would be thicker . But iv been coming here for years and had to give it a chance so this weekend we ordered again the same as last weekend. And are Heroes were amazing 👏 ❤️ guess it depends are who made it that day. Hopefully we will continue to get the best Heroes around 🙏. With prices rising you still want to get your money worth. More money does not mean less product

2022-04-22This is a very small hero shop with a small waiting area, but the service is very courteous and the prices are fair. The sandwiches are a good size and well made. My favorite is the All American but truly they dont know how to make a bad sandwich.

2021-01-08This place is a classic. My favorite is the chicken supreme which consists of Chicken cutlet, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers and the works. But any chicken cutlet sandwich from this place is great. Idk why other places dont do this but these guys pound the chicken nice and thin and fry it so well. The chicken cutlet is very juicy and flavorful. The hero rolls from this place need to be toasted otherwise you are wasting your time. What can I say they make a great sandwich. The only problem with this place is that people behind the counter dont really seem like they want to speak with you. They just want you to spit out your order asap so you can get out of their face. Or that the vibe I get anyway. Its kind of annoying. Other than that this place makes a good product so I would recommend it.

2022-07-09I am fighting back tears writing this review. I have never been spoken to like that before in my life. I called to place an order for multiple heroes in hopes of bringing them to a block party. The gentleman on the phone was condescending, aggressive, told me to “stop talking,” when I was trying to ask questions about how they might be able to help me. Told me he didn’t have time to cut the sandwiches up and asked why I couldn’t do it myself. Talked me through “walking into the kitchen, getting a knife, slicing them”…in such a degrading and belittling tone like I was a child. I told him I’d be withdrawing my order because I couldn’t tolerate being spoken to like this. I’m angry that I couldn’t find braver words in the moment to defend myself and that I allowed him to make me feel so small. If a coworker/boss heard him, I would hope they would have acted on the spot. It truly bordered verbal abuse. I grew up in Bellmore and have long frequented My Hero. It’s a family staple. I will gladly never eat a sandwich there again and tell everyone I know that they do not deserve our business anymore. Side note: I have never written a bad review of a business before, it’s not my style. This was something else, and a prime example of what’s wrong with entitled white men in America.

2022-06-28Sorry .. always a regular lunch stop for my office ... VERY surprised , we got our chicken clubs .. i like some melted mozz on my chicken club... they always toast it.. THIS TIME i guess because it was 3 pm .. little late in the day .,. they got lazy and microwaved it to melt the cheese ..turned the bread into a rock like chewing on a rubber band ... and i have to say it ruined my lunch and the great MY HERO experience i usually have .. dont slack guys .. once your on top you still have to work to stay up there

2022-05-06One of the best hero places around. Always great heroes and never had any problems. I would definitely recommend going here.

2022-07-05Been going to My Hero for years-since the original owner. Food and prices great. Recommend it highly.

2021-12-13Ive been going here for over a decade and a half. I love the food and prices but the service and ease of acquiring the food leaves much to be desired. I feel like especially in 2021 they could easily make ordering and getting food a lot better than what it is. If I could, Id give it 3.5 stars because of that but dang those sandwiches are too good to give it just a 3.

2022-01-08This deli has all the qualities that majority of deli in New York lost with decades of operation which is top notch service, high quality ingredients, and personality. This is a mom and pop establishment that is very welcoming; if your looking for that New York deli hero look no further this is the place.

2022-08-08Always delicious!! Nicest employees!! Been going here for years!!
