Classic old school diner. I’ve walked by it a million times but finally got to enjoy a late breakfast there today. No BS. Super fast service. Solid coffee. It was pretty packed but anyone who came in got seated promptly and I didn’t feel rushed out, even when I lingered for a bit to sip my coffee.I got 2 eggs over easy with home fries and rye toast. I don’t always eat the toast but I must say this toast was exceptionally SLAMMIN. I didn’t even butter it ¯_(ツ)_/¯.Boyfriend got a turkey triple decker with fries that he thoroughly enjoyed as well. He agreed on the toast.I’ll definitely go back next time I get the chance.
Neils is an atmosphere, and Im pretty sure some of their food is really good. The first time I had the tuna melt it was excellent, but the subsequent two times, it was... Alright. The avocado shake was fine the time I had it. Im a pescatarian, so I probably wont have the very best items on their menu... For me the reason its an unshakable 5 star experience is because it delivers the New York diner experience. I have an incredible sense of well being whenever Im there
No check for vaccination. We got an undercooked bland cheeseburger and a pastrami sandwich so riddled with gristle that it was nearly inedible. Supposed to come with coleslaw and a pickle. Got about 2 tablespoons of coleslaw and no pickle. They are out of pickles, the waiter said. Way overpriced.
Its your classic diner—decent food and a charming atmosphere. The pancakes are good, the hot chocolate is normal, but it feels like its from a different time period. Strawberry pancakes are just pancakes covered with strawberries. Its close to the Hunter College theater, and is a good place to grab a bite to eat before or after a play.
The dessert that I ordered tasted like the frosting was made from margarine instead of butter. It feels heavy instead of a light texture when you eat it. But I went there mainly for coffee, so I had three cups. Not obviously coffee addict, kidding aside. No sugar just plain coffee, and I enjoyed them all. I had a great time here!
I will never ever ever order from this place again so today I was starving at work so I ordered a blue cheese burger Deluxe which came out to about 14 bucks okay when I receive my burger I almost vomited once I took a bite into my burger the blue cheese was old the bread soggy horrible so I called Leo(worker) and I explained to him my situation, I asked for either my money back or to give me something else so I decided to try a grilled chicken burger and When my chicken sandwich was delivered another situation, my chicken was old or I dont know if they cook with old oil or mix it with fish I have no clue but it had a distinct disgusting taste so I called to complain again about my situation and at this point Im really starving & pissed and I did not receive my money back he told me the first time he changed my order and now he cant do anything about it because just cuz I dont like the food I explain to him its not because I do not like the food its because it tastes disgusting and old I want my money back so the moral of the story is please if you craving a nice burger or even a grilled chicken sandwich do not ever ever go here these people are thieves and there are disgusting I would never order from here again and I am not the type to leave bad reviews I always leave nice good reviews but I will be making a call to the Department of Health and Report how disgusting and old their food is I hope I do not get sick!
I loved the authenticity of Neil’s Coffee Shop. Everyone was super friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming. I enjoyed a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich with a strong cup of coffee. Of course I had to try a chocolate croissant. My food was delicious and the fresh baked pastries were cooked perfectly. So yummy! I will definitely be back.
We came across this little diner while walking down Lexington. The menu was all inclusive and seemed like a great place. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the selection of Greek food on the menu. What was even better was the hospitality. The owner, Nick, spoke to us multiple times and explained his Greek background which explained the fantastic gyros and spinach pie. Between the food and the hospitality this was the best dining I have stumbled across in NYC. I would highly recommend this restaurant and especially the gyros.
Nice classic spot! Cozy, comfortable, old fashioned diner. Nothing fancy, but thats part of the charm. My food was very good, and the other items on the menu looked great as well. Good smoothie- a little expensive, but not too bad for Manhattan. Hope Neils stays just the way it is- timeless.
Good food, I had chicken tenders and a milkshake, my friend had spinach pie. But there was a piece of food on the side of my glass which totally grossed me out and my friend had a bit of something stuck on her plate. She sent her food and my milkshake back and we would have called the manager except then we remembered we’re not karen.
Traditional (as in the old fashioned, not the souped-up fancy) diner. A bit expensive but, hey, this is the Upper East Side of NYC, so by those standards it is normal again.Extensive menu served all day around. The milk shake is a treat. As youd expect, repeat guests ate treated with special attention. As are folks who can banter with staff in Spanish. Give it a try!
Simple and basicYou can tell that this little gem has been around for some time and consistency is the reason. The food is pretty good/standard and the service is super fast. This is a typical NYC dinner without any bells and whistles, just down home food and service with a smile
We came here for our lunch break, off peak for the diner. Still took a long time for the food to come out. I had a gyro, its was fine, nothing special. Id come back if I wanted a diner and was in the area. No need to make a special trip to come here but glad its still going after all these years!
Whenever I am anywhere near 70th Street & Lex, Neils Coffee Shop is my place to go. Not an overpriced and pretentious brasserie or cafe, but a homey, nicely priced and well-serviced establishment. For now, they have outdoor dining on 70th Street with nice views and friendly atmosphere.
We came for the Sunday brunch and it never dissapoints - fixed price menu ($15,90) includes freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee or tea. Our favourites are the Californian omelette and European waffles.Really nice and polite service, old fashion diner style. Not fancy but the real thing.
Beautiful, even nostalgic atmosphere with great service and delicious dishes. Neils is one of New Yorks greatest. If you are not good on your feet, mind you that the restroom is in the basement and not wheelchair accessible. Besides that minor point, Neils Coffee Shop is always and ever a great choice for shorter or longer visits, and for a little work to be done without any disturbances - including WiFi, which is (luckily) not available. Go!
From the outside, Neils looks like the coffee shop your parents or grandparents would have gone to. It even has that old neon sign hanging above its door. The nostalgia continues on the inside; you can choose to sit at a counter or a tiny booth where you can eavesdrop on the conversation around you. Service is fast and friendly. The price though, well thats another thing. The cheapest item was two eggs - for $5.50. Burgers without fries were in the $6.75 range (with fries were upwards of $9.00). I got a tuna club - nothing special, just throw tuna, a few slices of tomatoes and some lettuce on bread with fries - $10. If youre looking for cheap eats, go elsewhere. But if youre ok with the prices, definitely come here.
We were in NY for a day, and this is where we ended up eating after roaming about looking for a coffee shop. This was a mistake. Of all the places we could have tried, this one did not deserve our business. It was so cramped together that it seemed like they were cleaning the place and shifted all the tables together out of the way. If you are not tiny and skinny, it will be literally impossible for you to sit down. Their bathroom- the same story. I am 53 and weigh 110lbs and I was suffocating in there. I could not turn around in there and had to move sideways. Hell, my closet at home is bigger! But I was still willing to look past all this and the fact I had to grab the menues myself after waiting for a while as my husband and I were starving. I ordered a broccoli omelet and wanted to substitute fries for broccoli as well. That was going to be $3 extra. I passed. My husband ordered a grilled cheese and fries, which was $13 dollars for two pieces of bread with cheese and frozen grocery bought fries. My omelet came out so bland I could hardly justify the price of $9 for two eggs mixed with broccoli and thrown on the grill! It had no spices whatsoever and was the blandest omelet I had ever eaten. I literally question the taste of New Yorkers who frequent this place! It was awful! At the end, when our server presented us the check, he mentioned that service was not included. He got a smaller tip than he would have gotten had he not mentioned this at all.
Neils Coffee Shop was a great neighborhood experience; I personally enjoyed the pancakes and I had a scrambled egg on the side - well done. However, this morning (7/02/2018), Neils was seized by the New York State Department of Revenue. Not sure when it will return.UPDATE: It has since reopened. Thank goodness!
My coworker and I came in for lunch, were seated quickly and given our menus. Within 2-3 minutes we knew what we wanted, closed our menus, placed them at the front of the table and waited for our server. Waited another 3-4 minutes, still no server. I took this opportunity to go to the restroom, and advised my coworker to place my order when the server came.Upon my return, the server still hadnt come to our table . We waited another 2-3 minutes, so my coworker went to the bathroom, and returned, and the server still hadnt come. At this point, its obvious to me, my business wasnt wanted/needed. As we stood up to leave, a server miraculously shows up, snatches the menus and silverware off the table and states, next time, dont make me work for free!We were Flabagasted! After waiting approximately 10 minutes to be served, he was upset with us! I expressed my dissatisfaction to the manager, and the server says we only came to use the bathroom. I couldnt believe this was happening. Not to mention, my team of 7 met here in the morning and purchased a breakfast plate, coffees, tea and bananas a mere 2-3 hours prior! The manager motioned for us to sit back down, and apologized; but at this point our break was over. And, unfortunately, I have to call a spade a spade....we were the only African American and Latina customers. We will not be returning.
The food, service, and the price was good. Its very disappointing that there was a line for the restroom. They only have one restroom. The restroom is so small that I had a problem fitting in there. It is smaller than a closet. A business such as this diner should have more than one restroom.
We went to have breakfast, i order an omelett that comes with potatoes and toast. But the omelett was very simple, and was small. Did not have pepper, tomatoes or cilantro, only onions. The potatoes like if it was a left over. My husband bought a sandwich of ham and scrumble egg. And was very little, and did not look professional. The good thing is the spanish employees are very nice and friendly.I would not go back there.
This place is the best bad-coffee-shop in New York. Really charming in a kind of hasnt been renovated since your parents were in middle school kind of way, and has surprisingly good food considering that nobody seems to be trying that hard to make it decent. Corned beef hash is a particular favorite.
THIS PLACE IS A NYC GEM!! It is as if you have been transported 60 years ago. Classic diner coffee shop. Unbeatable burgers, breakfasts and more. All served with cunning and unpretentious speed. Yes, the managers name is Niko. flamboyant queen over-sharing in the next booth. The South Asian taxi driver double parked for a quick tea milk and sugar. Doctor from Lenox Hill in a suit next to a laborer at the counter. All this slice of humanity shoehorned into a tiny corner near the 68th IRT Lex. Had some medical issues and this shot in the arm I really needed. My faith in all that is good and wonderful about NYC was reawakened. Not just a meal but a holy pilgrimage.
Neils Coffee Shop is whats great about NYC..When you enter, its like going back in time when the city was in its early days..The food is delicious, the coffee is amazing and you can sit there for hours and just listen to the staff talk about the old days..When I lived in the area, this was my go to spot..I highly recommend their food, especially their breakfasts..Ill always miss this place..

2022-04-03Been here a few times for breakfast.. service was good! Food is decent .. the bacon was slightly too crispy for me.. it was almost rock hard but my company liked the bacon that way.. I personally do not like it very hard and crispy

2022-05-14The quintessential diner/coffee shop. They dont make them like this anymore. Great service, good eats, and just the right amount of space. Perfect spot for privacy and conversation.

2022-04-05I ordered a large almond latte (for about $7) and it tasted like dirty water with a hint of coffee. When I tried to send it back the waiter responds as if it was my fault the latte was horrendous. “That’s just what an almond latte tastes” he said as if I never had an almond latte from anywhere else. atleast the manager had the decency to not charge me for it even despite his comments hinting that I was in the wrong. If you love being overcharged for poor quality food and bad service this place is your go to.

2022-07-07I love this diner! It has been in the same location for more than 50 years, all the food is great, the service is also great and the diner was in the right spot at the right time yesterday in the sweltering heat with a delicious fruit salad, two croissants, slice of a very delicious marble cake, perfectly made ice coffee with just the right amount of almond milk and two cold bottles of Poland Spring water! My only wish the one stall bathroom could be made larger, however, I dont think this will happen, any time soon! Other than the bathroom, this dinner is amazing and in a very good location, which is close to Hunter college and the subway!

2022-05-20Neil’s Coffee Shop has been around since the 1980’s and while I’m sure their menu prices have increased, their quality has remained excellent! Neil’s is a cozy and relaxing place to eat and schmooze! And they also have outdoor enclosed seating.

2022-07-01Great local spot for coffee and breakfast. Busy and bustling all morning. The staff are super kind and friendly. They get things out very quick and have a bar you can sit at if you need a fast breakfast.

2020-11-10A friend and I came here as it opened on a Sunday morning and barely anyone arrived during our meal. That, contact tracing, and the plexiglass between every booth made us feel very safe during the pandemic. On to the food... I had the Croissant French Toast and it was so delicious! I loved it and definely recommend it if youre feeling sweet and savory. Had a coffee to wash it down and it was pretty standard! Cant wait to come back and probably get the same thing!

2021-03-05The most basic NYC diner style coffee shop. Seems like they run a tight ship because it is busy and food comes out fast for the most part. They offer a student discount, ask about it. I like the bar seat by the window for a quick lunch. If you want to sit down to a warm and quick meal. If you are not in the mood to try anything new today, this is the place. Check prices before going, Neil’s isn’t your average cheap coffee shop. Over all: Pretty clean, fast and somewhat consistent. (And kinda pricey for basic but comes with the neighborhood for the most part). Not bad but not great really either.

2020-09-18Nice staff, and taking care during COVID. I’d stick to basics here. Was pretty disappointed with the “challah French toast” — I don’t think it was that ...reminds me of something packaged and frozen when I was a kid... But eggs are fine, coffee solid, and egg cream was pretty good! It’s also kind of expensive. But a good place to go right now, especially because of the outdoor seating.
