Came out to Staten Island to try to Sri Lankan food. We saw good reviews so we decided to stop by here. We ordered mutton kottu and chicken curry. It was simply incredible. Just as good as the best food I had when I went to Sri Lanka back in 2018.However, what took our experience to the next level was the wonderful service we received from the woman working at the front. She was extremely sweet. We had a nice conversation and she provided great recommendations for us. On top of that, she threw in some extra food for us when packing up our take out box!The atmosphere is casual but don’t let that deceive you. The food and service is very high quality and we will definitely be coming back next time we are in the neighborhood!
The owner Viji was so hospitable and friendly. Gave recommendations and prepared everything and called us way before we expected it. Food properly packed with care. Even gave us complimentary freshly made passion fruit juice when she figured out we had a 2 hours drive ahead of us. Will be back for sure.
I got a plate with rice, three vegetables and one piece of curry fish in gravy. The coconut yellow lentils were probably my favorite of the three. Beet and dry fry cabbage with spices were pretty decent too. The fish is white meat, slightly on the dry side but goes well with the acidity of the pickled red onions/chilli peppers. Its bone-in but the bones are big and easy to pick out.The guy queuing with me recommended trying the fish rolls. They seem to be quite popular, as he drove all the way from Manhattan to buy them in bulk. IIm not 100% sure about pricing. I asked for a plate with a little of every vegetable plus one piece of fish. Paid $15 plus tax. The printed price for a fish lunch special is $14. However I did get extra vegetables so I think the additional $1 was reasonable.Would recommend this place to anyone living in or visiting the New York City area. Its worth the trek from Manhattan! The owner is super friendly too.Street parking and MTA bus stop out front. No bathroom.
Food was on the spicy side and it reminded me of home. The owner Viji recommended Mango lassi which she calls 911 for spiciness. Absolutely loved the food. This was our first taste of Sri Lankan food and we are coming back especially for the crab curry that we missed since is served on Saturdays only.
We are not New Yorkers, but have travelled in many of the USA states and have really enjoyed several Sri Lankan restaurants. This little restaurant in Staten Island has truly authentic Sri Lankan style cuisine and missing flavors we always look for. The food is delicious and refreshingly light, with a definite sense of real freshness and magic touch. Imagine you are going to a rural Sri Lankan village and having an authentic rice and curry on a lotus leaf beside a nice lake filled with lotus....flavors are so strong. We find the food in most Sri Lankan restaurants to be quite heavy but not here. Price is very convenient, it is great value. Service is really friendly too, nice people.
TO ALL VEGANS: this is the place to eat. Viji Aunty does an incredible job with being making sure the food she serves fits our needs. Her welcoming arms make even the experience of ordering such a special one, and she makes sure that you are at peace with the food afterwards :) an absolutely kind and loving soul that is making the Sri Lankan identity and culture so proud! Everyone who comes in the area MUST come here - Viji Aunty has 26 years of experience to happily provide ❤️E
Super good food and excellent service!!! She welcomed us so nicely and kind, and let us take some chairs and sit in the sun. Food was amazing! It was our first time here and we asked her for advice and didn’t dissapoint. Kotthu Roti was bomb. We will be back for sure.
This place is utterly fantastic and well worth the trip to Staten Island! As others have said, Viji was an extremely gracious and friendly host who happily made me a custom plate when I told her Id never had Sri Lankan food. It was a mix of vegetarian, vegan, and meat dishes, all of which were amazing. Definitely make the visit!
Going here is like going to a favorite aunts house for dinner! Very small, only two tables, but the very friendly lady remembered my name the second time in! I do sort of look at the menu, then chat for a bit, and always come out with a delicious lunch that may or may not be what I went in for,but is always a delight! Im looking forward to taking my vegan daughter here, after reading the reviews.
New Asha is the real deal! Viji is so incredibly welcoming... my friend and I were unsure what to get, so she prepared a custom sampler platter from scratch so we’d be sure to try a bit of everything, and gave us appetizers while we waited!! The food was absolutely delicious, the spices were perfect, and the prices were incredibly reasonable! I can see from the other glowing reviews here that this is not an isolated incident. Come and support this gem!!
I was there sometimes,Srilankan food and authentic but too much over priced, they don’t have much varieties in the menu, prices were set up for the people who are trying the authentic food. They change the pricedepending on the people. Their prices sometimes equal to a five star dine in which is outrageous. If they want customers and money they should be honest to the customers . That’s how you build the business not by scamming customers.
I have been coming here for years! The taste of authentic, homemade Sri Lankin food will stay on your tastebuds and keep you coming back for more. Never EVER EVER a disappointment. The spices and textures of palatable combinations become an addictive pleasure each bite. The pictures listed in the fellow reviews do not lie. This place ROCKS
The best fish curry or crab curry you can ever have in America (not exaggerating). I dont think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. The owner is the sweetest person on the planet who has the best recommendations. For vegans, definitely try the veg platter with the jackfruit curry, really yum.
The owner is a very kind lady who really cares about the delicious food that she prepares with love and kindness. The taste is out of this world. Havent yet seen anyone match this level of balanced, well cooked and healthy style food. Prices are reasonable when you factor all the goodness and kindness. Thanks for the great service and the super tasty food.
Felt like family as soon as we walked in. May very well be the best service my family has ever ever had at any restaurant. My family is vegan. We didnt have to make any choices. A delicious spread was made for us, which was all decided by our wonderful host. Thank you so much for the amazing food and kind service! We will definitely be back!
FOOD IS AMAZING!!! This was my first time trying Sri Lankan food and I have to say that New Asha has definitely won themselves a new loyal customer. I am VEGAN and they had plenty of yummy options for me. Viji’s customer service skills are above and beyond. The food had the perfect amount of spice for me (*if you have a low spice tolerance I would recommend you note that when ordering*). I am not privy to the correct Sri Lankan names of the foods that I had but I was served white rice, grilled jackfruit, onion salad, sautéed cabbage, sautéed beets, spinach with potato, lentils, vegetable curry, and a passion fruit juice all for $15!!! You can’t beat that. Everything was seasoned well and I even have leftovers that I will definitely be enjoying for lunch tomorrow. SUPPORT SMALL LOCAL BUSINESSES!!!
Really good authentic srilankan food. Warm and friendly service by the owner, gives a homely atmosphere to the restaurant. The owner went out of the way to make something for us which wasnt available on the menu for that specific time as we came all the way from the city.
My now-husband and I discovered this place shortly after we first met and it’s our favorite place to eat on the island. Incredibly friendly staff, delicious (and very spicy!) food and a welcoming environment. Also when we brought our vegan friend to eat there, they were great about making sure she had a good meal and knew everything that went into it. 100% recommend.
Walking in to New Asha was like walking into the owners home dining room. They made us a huge plate of food after a long morning biking through Staten Island and made great recommendations for what to eat. The roti was incredible and our favorite dish, but a close second was the tapioca the owner encouraged us to try at the end of the meal. We had leftovers and when she packed them all up, she added MORE food! Totally unnecessary but so kind. I cant wait to return to such a pleasant place.
We already had lunch by the time we went there. Somehow we found space to squeeze delicious egg/fish rolls and fish buns. They were really tasty and spicy. Owner is very friendly and she even gave us free Sri Lankan style tea as a treat . The place was busy. Many phone orders and some were eating-in. Definitely visit next time to have lunch and taste some authentic Sri Lankan food.
I don’t generally leave reviews, but this restaurant was so good that I had to take the time. Not only was the food fantastic—tasty and textured and generous portions—but the proprietor was an absolute joy. When we had trouble deciding, she brought us the food she thought we’d enjoy most (she was right!) and brightened our days with her wonderful personality.
Friendliest people you meet on the planet hands down . As you walk the aroma of the cooking and the friendly greeting welcomes you. You can chose to eat in or take away. Food is excellent. Love their rice and curry Sri Lankan style. Not too spicy specially for the non Sri Lankans and please save room for the fabulous dessert called Watalappam. Its made in house. I dont say this lightly by any means this restaurant reminded me of the old Sri Lankan hospitality where you feel like your still at home even though you know you are far away. Highly recommend the place. Quick bite , something to go, lunch or dinner. It will satisfy your hunger and soul.Btw. I dont know them personally just walked in today because I heard they were good. Spent about 60 for 3 people and it was worth the drive. They deserve to be known.
Delicious food! Fresh, rich spices. The host and owner is gracious and such a generous spirit. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave it’s as if you were invited into someone’s home. Can’t wait to go back and try new delicious things from Viji’s kitchen. BTW if you’re vegan you will not be disappointed one bit!
Amazing experience!!! It lives to its reviews, the owner is probably the most charming person we’ve met in the US, proud of what they do and OUTSTANDING food. The mango lassi is the best one I’ve ever tried (they make absolutely everything fresh!!!).It’s kind of far to get to (the area is quite meh) but so worthy! You won’t regret it.Sam&David
Even though I love Sri Lankan food, I had originally avoided this one in favor of the others on the block because it looked like it was just a take-out place. Well, maybe it is just a take out place with only a few tables, but this one has the best food - especially for vegetarian options. Everything is always fresh and clean and the prices are reasonable. Viji (not sure of the spelling of her name) is the friendliest restaurateur Ive ever met and you cant help but leave there happy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Amazing! I normally dont write reviews because I just dont care enough, but this restaurant was worth writing a review. The food was so good! Also the employee (owner?) was probably the nicest restaurant employee Ive met, so 5 stars for service also. If Im in the area again Im definitely stopping there. Good vegetarian options too.
What an amazing find in Staten Island. Had lunch here and was truly served by the owner of the restaurant. She asked us how hungry we were and then asked us to choose a meat so she could build us a platter. What a nice lady! She was so welcoming and gave us a good platter with mixed curries and veggies. My favorite was the veggie with the quinoa. Omogsh everything was so flavorful even the RAW onions were delicious. Chicken was cooked perfectly. The veggie roti was amazing as well with such a kick of spice. Will definitely come back here for more Sri Lankan food that warms the soul.
I have found myself in Staten Island a lot for working and am trying to eat at every Sri Lankan restaurant I can find. New Asha was by far the best bang for the buck (my lunch special ended up being three meals worth of food), and absolutely delicious. Really enjoyed the okra and beets, which I had not seen before at other restaurants. Also, the woman working there could not be any friendlier or more helpful. Will be back!
This the best Sri Lankan restaurant in North America (and perhaps all the Free-World). My personal favorite restaurant in all of New York City. The menu varies with each weekday. I prefer Fridays, Saturdays and especially Sunday when they go all out. Try the squid curry, a Sunday specialty.
First time visiting the area and I decided to try something new (for once). The woman who helped me was extremely nice and instantly knew I was not from the area so she walked me through all of their options they offered for the lunch special.Very good food and for a really good price! Definitely will be going there again the next time Im in the area.
A true Staten Island gem! There is nothing else in NYC like Staten Islands little Sri Lanka for exotic & spicy deep south Asian cuisine and New Asha is a long standing beloved establishment there. Pro tip for first timers: dont bother trying to order off the menu just check out whats available already made in the steam tables and get what looks good!
We visited all the way from Mississippi o New york, Just went there and ordered some mutton biryani, and it was the best SL dish I had in USA. It was not American-Sri Lankan. Spicy and tasty, more like home. Had some wade, fish buns, and vegetable roties and they were good too
Love this place... Owner is so sweet to both of my children.. (they both LOVE LOVE Love the vegan food they have there).. I myself am addicted to the food.... 😨🔊its so good.... I was extremely surprised because the surrounding sri lankin restaurants are horrible...! So I wsd shocked that her food was so good. Love New Asha!!

2022-03-13Such a wonderful place to eat! My partner was looking for authentic Sri Lankan food and New Asha surpassed our expectations. The staff was so lovely and sweet, she recommended dishes and explained each in great detail for us with recommendations and pairing. The atmosphere is so warm, calm, and inviting as well. They truly connect with you through and far past the food. Such generous and beautiful hearts, that’s probably why the food is so good! Please support New Asha they put so much thought, time, and care into what they do, and it shows.

2022-01-04Made a trip to this place while visiting NYC just for the Sri Lankan food. Was a little disappointed when the reviews didn’t measure up to the experience. Most of the dishes on the menu were unavailable for lunch. Finally ordered chicken kottu, vegetable buns and Chinese rolls. The taste was adequate at best for the price paid. The staff is friendly towards regulars. Didn’t feel welcomed as a guest. There was a strange smell that ruined the vibe of the place. Overall, this restaurant is ok, but wouldn’t recommend if you are a homesick Sri Lankan looking for the taste of home.

2022-04-16Best restaurant in New York for South Indian/Sri Lankan food. They make you feel at home. The owner Viji is a very sweet person. She treated us like house guests and asked for preferences before preparing our meal. I would go back here any day for the delicious meal and relaxing atmosphere. Everything that we tried tasted great and were reasonably priced. Fish Curry and Kothu Parotta was amazing. I have been to 1000s of restaurants across the world but nobody has every treated us so affectionately like the people at New Asha restaurant. 5 star ✨ any day!

2022-01-02I really enjoy eating here!! the owner is so sweet & caring. You can tell she really wants you to have a good experience. I have never eaten Sri Lankan food before this and I’ve been blown away. The potato and leeks with lentil and roti are soo addictive. There’s no way I could eat the whole thing in one sitting so the portions are worth the price. I sat inside a few times and the owner kept coming to my table giving me samples of new food for me to try. Its like being at home!

2022-03-29INCREDIBLE FOOD! But most importantly Vijee was so sweet. Taught us about what we were eating and made us try all the desserts. I highly recommend the Jackfruit dishes (there were two curries when we were there), the tapioca pudding, and the pickled vegetables. Everything was fantastic and cheap!

2022-05-13Great food, I prefer the mild option, very affordable, owners are super friendly and helpful in choosing the right dishes. Went to this restaurant after completing the 5 borough bike tour and met with other riders too, had a great time talking and stuffing ourselves with delicious Sri Labkan food, cheered on by the super friendly staff!

2021-10-17Lovely staff and the food is amazing, really cant speak highly enough about the warmth and kindness of the people here (theyd be horrified to know they forget something in my order, but Im still giving five stars, that says all you need to know). We took the food to go and ate in a nearby park as the interior is small and doesnt have many seats, but they were treating anyone like long time customers. Its a trek from Brooklyn but Im hoping to go back.
