New Museum in other cities:
The museum has strict Covid protocols in place which is great. It was less crowded so easier to see all of the art pieces. The space itself work really well with the Faith Ringgold exhibit because of the scale of her quilts. Don’t forget to go up to the viewing floor for a nice skyline view.
One of the most wonderful and important modern art museums operating currently. the triennial is not to be missed, the art is genius, poignant, beautifully curated, and truly thought-provoking. staff are kind, art is lovely. go!!! and no lines either cause its mad underrated
Art Museum? Don’t think so. There is only three floors of limited exhibitions and lack of variety. Elevators are extremely slow and stairs in between floors are tedious. The only salvageable thing was the seventh floor view, good luck getting there with those stairs though.
The moment I get to the door to this place, I was not greeted in a friendly manner. I felt like I was being checked in by TSA. It was a bit of confusion as far as what to do when being checked in. People who was at the front giving instructions did not inform the front desk. when we get to the front desk the young colored hair lady was arrogant. When I got to the top floor, the black security guard was disrespectful. When I asked for his name he completely ignored me. I spoke to Timothy the supervisor who was apologetic and sincere and just reiterated the rules. When we decided to go back to the top floor after viewing all the rooms, the guard made it really uncomfortable for us by staring at us through the window for 3-5 mins. This ruined my experience at this location. I would never return to a place like this because of the staff and I would never recommend this place. I apologize to the artist because if staff I would never show or tell about this place and I would always remember the short bald headed security guard with the crocs in my mind when I think about this place. What a way to finish my visit with the security guard starting at me through the glass window. Never again! Save your money people!!!!!!
A staff member bullied and loudly shamed my 11 yo daughter who touched a tapestry, even after we respectfully apologized and she acknowledged her mistake. The docent, a grown man, got within inches of her face and threatened to write an incident report. She cried for quite some time. Nice rooftop.
I find the New Museum generally unfriendly, but its new show, “Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America,” fills every floor of the small, vertical building with an emotional, challenging, and timely exhibition. See it.Don’t miss Arthur Jafa’s amazing video installation, “Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death,” on the ground floor. Rashid Jobnson’s “Antigone’s Organ” on the top floor is also a highlight.Book advance tickets. The cafe is currently closed.
Very recommended museum. The building is impressive for its shape (and view from the balconies at the 7th floor). Staff is super friendly and helpful. The exhibitions are very different from other places. There are in-depth expositions of two American, non-mainstream artists that fit very well with the current wave of diverse and inclusive art. It really supplements the museum offer in NYC. Something that will make you think. (Also nice: no entrance fee :) )
Went there earlier today, it was a very interesting visit. The whole building (which itself looks stunning from the outside) was basically a giant Hans Haacke exposition, and worth every penny. Speaking of which, while the entrance fee isnt particularly cheap (this is NYC, after all), its less expensive than most NYC museums), with the caveat that, even though the building itself isnt small, the space dedicated to the art pieces felt smaller than other NYC modern art museums.Try to come on a Saturday or Sunday, otherwise you wont be able to visit the observation deck on the 7th floor.
Fantastic modern art. The exhibits were conceptual and many spoke to various social issues. The seventh floor outdoor space was fabulous as well. I really enjoyed the variety in terms of styles of art as well as various mediums. One of the highlights for me was the interactive walk through exhibit currently on the third floor. Be quick when going through it though - while it’s a cool place for selfies, each space is very small and you have to move through pretty quickly as it’s so popular. I say this because, unfortunately, the staff had to intervene and seemed annoyed at some of the hold ups caused by people stopping to take photos. The only downside to this museum in my opinion is the fact that it’s a bit disjointed in its layout - there is no clear way to move through the various spaces and it is easy to miss things. It is smaller than many other museums in Manhattan but that’s something I personally enjoyed. Overall, a cool experience.
Wonderful museumQuite well prepared for visiting during the pandemicThe “Grief and Grievance” exhibit was very moving as it was stimulatingMy pictures include an interesting graffiti just outside the museum which makes an even bigger statement on the status quoI strongly recommend this exhibit for anyoneIt is very powerful and movingThe stairways and elevators are clearly markedSocial distancing measures are well enforcedThank you world for allowing this to happen
Definitely not a high rater for visiting New York City unless you are REALLY into modern art (and I mean super inaccessible modern art they showcase there). I didnt appreciate being followed around by the security guards after my mask fell off one of my ears one time for a short second. She aggressively told me to fix it, which I was doing, mumbled under her breath and shook her head at me, and then proceeded to follow me around. I wasnt really enjoying the museum before that but I was trying... But then I certainly wasnt interested afterward. I then saw one of them yell at an older gentleman not to drink some water in the lift. Just weird
To be honest the exhibits were sparse and small during my visit (sep 2021) that had no real depth to them. It felt more like a multimedia gallery space than a museum. It’s true the roof deck has a great view, but the space up there is empty... no chairs, and a lost opportunity to have a nice cafe up there. If you have to spend the $18 to get in, I honestly would skip the new museum.
Im a big art fan but the New Museum was well above my head. I can usually appreciate modern art, but this was something else. Definitely some interesting exhibits and something you can enjoy if you can understand it. Fortunately I got free tickets with my Chase Private Client Culture Card, but I probably would not have paid for tickets had I known what the art inside would be like.If you do go, make sure you visit the top floor for a nice view of the city skyline.
Obviously an incredible museum, as the line to get in stretched around the block. The exhibits were incredible and the access to an affordable contemporary art space is priceless. The Rist show was amazing. However, do NOT go at peak times! Its just not worth it to be shoved around by crowds and to try to experience immersive art through people taking selfies and yelling at their kids. The free flowing, modern atmosphere is great but people take it as an excuse for poor museum etiquette. The museum itself is one of my new favorites in NYC.
This place constantly changes exhibition featuring international artists that have really unconventional ways of expressing art of have unconventional messages in conventional forms of art (like paintings or sculptures). Its really surprising. Its also near Little Italy so you can grab a bite before or after. Tickets are around $20 and you dont need to buy them in advance.
Went to see the Pipilotti Rist show a few weeks ago. Very beautiful. Besides that the museum seems a bit flat. The library on the 5th or 6th floor seemed empty and unorganized. A little presentation would do especially since entrance fee per person was 16 USD. Lovely place.
Its become a must-visit place for me. Theyre slightly leftfield. Lovely simple large spaces. Exciting back steps between 4 and 3. Id prefer $12 admission to the current $18... which keeps it more of a treat than a frequent repeat. PS I never had something in enjoyed much in the cafe but its usually busy so whaddooeyeknow?
It was a great art experience. The art work did a great job of evoking feelings, especially the interactive art. The staff was friendly, organized and it had several floors for viewing. Plenty of resturants and cafes near by. Its right near the west village (Greenwich village and NYU). 🎨🖌️
A museum obsessed with resentment of modernity. In my visit today, I did not observe a single work of art that might be said to celebrate or raise the human condition. Basically everything is whining or ugliness that attempts to transport itself to great heights by virtue of cynicism. Effective criticism cannot be holistic. This place seems to look at the world and scream, worthless. If you enjoy bizarre video art, pull it up on YouTube and save $18.
I have been going to the New Museum since the 1990s. For many years the exhibits were disappointing. But recently the Museum has begun to pay more attention to black and other underrepresented artists. The results? Fantastic, thought provoking exhibits. More of this please!
The process of purchasing the free Thursday tickets is a bit misleading. If you accidentally forget to put the number of tickets (even after choosing date and time!) the ticket wont be yours and you wont be able to come in. You will be charged for donation, though! Its not user friendly - to make someone choose date and time for visit and assume they didnt want to buy the tickets... While we were trying to figure out what to do when one of us is not allowed to come in (reason described above), we were kicked out of the building not in a polite way. Also, rude screaming guard. The experience was spoiled anyway, but the art collection was also not very impressive.
Loved it. Very interesting exhibition of several non-mainstream artists with very unique styles. The staff is very friendly and willing to assist you at all times. Also, the building is very nice, there is a balcony at the top with a nice view of the nearby area. Great experience!
The art work was great but a trigger warning would have been appreciated. Staff gave us a bit of a hard time. We walked in scanned our tickets. Gave me a hard time about not having my student ID. We saw some friends outside and when we told her we would step out to talk to them she said if we left we would not be allowed back in. Instead they came in to speak with us. Sometimes with these rules people have they really need a better understanding of why the rules are in place. Smh.Then scolded for taking the wrong stairs because we missed a sign on the door.Building was very clean and clear. I liked how the work was presented. Much to look at. Rooftop great for pictures. Would totally host an event on the top floor when things become safe for closer social interactions.
I would’ve given this exhibit a 5 star only if the staff wasn’t so unfriendly! So sad to say this place was truly inspiring and I learned a lot but the staff just left a horrible taste in my mouth . Again , not all but most of them were rude and at one point my boyfriend and I were going to leave without even finishing the exhibitOtherwise very well presented
The exhibits here are relatively interesting and for an $18 adult ticket, the opportunity to see different works seems worth it. Given the vertical nature of the architecture, circulating around the museum exhibits was a bit more choppy than most museum experiences. Some might say the spaces are the right size while others might think the spaces are a bit small. I liked the sky lounge which is open on the weekends and gives you access to some nice views. I will say the some of the exhibits might not fit everyones taste but they were thought provoking nonetheless.
Is it possible to give zero stars? Honestly so disappointed... I came to the New Museum in a great mood! I was excited to see some good artwork... as soon as I got there they demanded that I check my bag and had a strong attitude (not in a good way). Dont get me wrong the artwork was amazing but the atmosphere... the security kept yelling at us for doing nothing & was extremely rude. Then I paid $11 for a small bar of chocolate and a lemonade!! She was very passive aggressive... probably because she is forced to work in such a horrible environment!! Wish I could say I enjoyed it but hopefully I never have to go back... Im not mad, just disappointed!
Excellent forward-looking contemporary art museum that offers daring, interesting shows that frequently engage with present-day issues head-on, and with this succeed in contextualizing very recent cultural history (i.e. the past three decades or so) in a way that larger, more slow-moving modern/contemporary art institutions in New York cannot. Because the New Museum is on the smaller side, it is able to be more nimble and take risks in its programming (and also doesn’t shy away from more challenging subject matter), which gives it a consistently satisfying edge you won’t find elsewhere.
Went on a Free Thursday though dont entirely know why they were open. 4 floors were closed (3 preparing a new exhibition and 1 only open on weekends), so there was really only 1.5 floors to see. Some aspects were innovative, after all I was initially recommended to check this out by folks leading Apples VR tour (who partnered with New Museum on creating that), but overall was a bit of a let down, likely driven by so much being closed.
Really interesting space. The Nari Ward gallery was very nice, and quite different from what you expect from a traditional showcase. The view from the top floor is really spectacular, but unfortunately, it is only open to the public on weekends. The elevators are quite slow, but luckily there is east access to the stairs and those don’t have as much traffic. There’s a security guard positioned in the stairwell now, so don’t get a jump scare when you see someone standing around the turn of the steps.
This museum is on the smaller end, with modern art from only a handful of artists and one featured artist. I personally didnt like the featured artist when I visited, so having one floor after another with the same ideas over and over again was tiring. You really have to be into this kind of art to enjoy yourself. Definitely not for children.
We decided to attend a pay-as-you-wish Thursday night. It was the last week of Pixel Forest installation and we were determined to see it no matter what! My understanding that this museum is especially fun to visit if you are eager to see a particular exhibition.Although the line was scary and looping around the block, it moved pretty fast. One of the floors was closed because they were changing exhibitions, but we still spent over an hour at the museum. My recommendation is to start on the top floor and make your way down.
I visited on a Thursday evening and took advantage of the pay what you wish cover. I gave $2, but saw people paying as little as a quarter. The line to enter was very long, but moved quickly. Once inside, I realized the main reasons for the long line had to do with ticket purchase (pay what you wish) and bag check - you must check large bags and backpacks.I found the exhibition interesting, but I wont dwell on that. In terms of space, the museum is very well laid out. I enjoyed navigating the exhibition through the 4-5 floors.Ill definitely revisit.
Without a tour guide the art might go over you head. The art exhibit at the time seemed to obsessed over shock factor. I didnt enjoy the exhibit, but I assume others might. The security was great. They really protect the art, make sure everything is smooth, and they are nice! I
It was expensive and not worth it at all. The staff was so passive aggressive and rude. The cafe was expensive too. When I went to the first exhibit past the cafe the ticket men were rude as well. They made you feel disrespected by saying look at the sign. They could have just asked to see the tickets. This museum is not a place for kids, it has adult themes. Also, if youre not a hipster then dont bother going, you wont like it. Its definitely a place for young adults.I went on a pretty empty day, so I imagine its worse when its packed.
Never going back. Had to argue with security about my purse because it looks too much like a backpack. They were going to have me empty it into a plastic bag so I could carry my valuables around. Then you have an empty purse in security but I can carry my stuff around with me just as long as its not in my leather purse that looks too much like a backpack. Yeah, makes perfect sense to me. Ive been there before and the exhibits are only ok. Then they wanted full price even though two floors were closed. At least the Guggenheim discounts admission on days when they are only partially open. Not worth the price of admission. Go to the Whitney instead.
Its my understanding this museum changes constantly. While I greatly enjoyed certain exhibits, I felt a large quantity of them were provocative for the sake of being provocative. Nudity in art is fine, but when its neither portraying an aesthetic nor conveying a deeper message, its almost pretentious.
Great experiences here. Thank you for making this art available to people!Minor note: in the future, when you sell out of a book, but still have multiple display copies lying around, swap those out for printed sheets of paper that display the cover and a note with info on the book. Sell those display copies to the people in the meanwhile.
Ive been coming to the New Museum for several years, and although the rotating artwork can be hit or miss, I enjoy that the museum is open to trying many different artists and mediums. The staff working behind the counter can be a bit abrasive, as if theyre not prepared for the crowds that sometimes come through the doors. Thankfully, the museum offers a free basic membership to NYC ID holders, which Ive taken advantage of. Unfortunately, Ive been scolded for trying to check in via the members line, which I really find a bit silly. The staff in general behaves like they could use a bit more customer service training.
Wonderful place, located in the trendy hipster spot in lower Manhattan, had an exhibit on Palestinian struggle when I visited. Very powerful display of what went on, the sky deck on the top floor provides and absolutely stunning view of the city. The elevators are big and roomy, quick, cordial staff, no issues whatsoever. Everyone should visit this place at some point.
I have a nice respect for the New Museum and what it is trying to accomplish. Its a great space and has a fantastic, constantly rotating set of works on display.Ground level youll find a cafe and gift shop as well as one large exhibition room. The building is comprised of over 7 floors of exhibitions in a building that in itself is a work of art. Make sure you get a chance to go up to the top floor and take a waltz on the observation deck, great views of the city and a great photo opportunity. The fun doesnt really stop there, if you are generous enough to become a member, they have some great events and parties to take advantage of. The Halloween party has always been one of the best times Ive had at a museum in a long time.
Youve been to the Met,MoMA,and Goog... Try The New Museum next. Im constantly finding, liking and learning Art that eventually makes its way to the other museums here. And even when I dont like a show I find I expand my understanding of art and artists here. We became members, you dont have to but you need to experience this museum.
This museum was a huge disappointment. I will never ever doubt yelp again. From first impressions, I assumed that this would be the best museum and that I found the best secret gem in the city. Not only did we have to pay $10 each, there was only-- if you really think about it -- three real floors. Most of the museum is made up of half floors, it was more like those one gallery places of Chelsea. For now, the exhibition was 1993. The entire museum was situated as a time capsule of some sorts...Although it was pretty interesting to see how 1993 was, I really didnt feel anything after leaving the place.I really only liked the rooftop, and Hey, New Museum thats cheating. You cant have your only best artwork be the city landscape! Maybe if they showed other pieces of art here, I MIGHT come back...but its too small! Even Chelseas free galleries has more art than that. Get to it, New Museum.
Its pay-as-you-wish every Thursday night. I took advantage of this and visited one December evening, not minding the near-freezing temperature. I was surprised to see a very long line and it took half an hour before I finally got in. The reception is really small and can probably accommodate only 25 people at a time, which explains the long wait. The staff are pleasant but seem overworked. The museum itself? I have four words: I Dont Get It.
Its good for modern arts lovers.. Extreme ones I would say. If youre someone who doesnt know a thing about abstract and modern art then you will not like this museum. It needs better and more work on the finishing of the walls and stairs they look really cheap. In my opinion, its better to go to MoMA (Museum of Modern Arts) instead.
The modern design of this building really stands out from the more classic surrounding buildings. Its a great place for an exhibition, although I did not like all of them. The rooftop balcony has a beautiful view over lower Manhattan. My tip: go to the top and then work you way down through the stairs
Cant wait to go back. I would to bring friends and family along with me next time. There was so much to see and do, I couldnt take it all in with such a short time I was there. It makes you appreciate lots of things way more. I hope everyone gets a chance to experience this for themselves. Its easy to sit and tell you, but to experience it for yourself is way better. Life is too short not to try new things. Im selling Avon and hope in a crazy way I can make people feel better with their purchases. Theres nothing like being apart of something so great that makes people feel so good. Dont just take my word for it, go out and see for yourself what I just experienced, you may have a different reaction than I did. I hope this information was very useful to you and your family.
I visited this museum by recommendation of a lawyer and a journalist friend.I loved it, especially reading the front pages of newspapers since its inception, it is like reading a history book.It had an impact on me in how of information is censored in some countries. And as journalism can influence public and political decisions a nation. I recommend that you visit, however, the price is not friendly.
Go to the top floor and check out the view!Art is so subjective. My experience whenever I come to the new museum is I appreciate about 25% of the art that I see there. The remaining 75% of it doesnt seem like art to me. Perhaps thats because a lot of it is very non traditional. Some of that 75% Sparks curiosity, but not appreciation of the creativity, craftsmanship or talent if the creator.I dont purport to say that I know what art is, but I know what appeals to me. The one thing you can say about this museum is the art gets you thinking.
This Museum might not be appropriate for younger children under 18. It depends on what they are exhibiting. The artwork at the new museum is very avant-garde. If youre there on a weekend make sure you make it up to the rooftop garden. If you have extra time after seeing Museum the Bowery kitchen interesting to the checkout.
The topic of the museum was confusing for us when we visited, I guess it is an art museum? But with different focused within. That can be a benefit or a doubt. Also the guy who checks bags is mad rude. But the building is very cool. Also some of the exhibits are interesting. I would go again only on Thursday when its reduced price.
Theres always some strange exhibit outside the building-- right now a small boat hanging from the roof. I loved the contemporary art here and also the reasonably priced student ticket ($10). Didnt stay for the cafe but the food looked tasty. Check it out on Thursday evenings, 7-9pm, for pay-what-you-wish night.
The New Museum always has some interesting exhibits going on. After years of passing by this place I only now realized that they offer a free night once a week. I was there for the Carsten Holler Experience exhibit and it was interesting. After seeing all the ads on the subway about the slide. I took the plunge.... If you heard something yelling a bunch of profanity... That was me. It was quick slide down and it was actually intense. It gets dark at some points and your not sure which way your going.Since the the exhibits change every month or so. Its hard to review this place by just basing it on the actual location. What can I say? Its a really cool building, very modern and clean? Thats about it. Its definitely a museum that I wouldnt pay to get in to. Its kinda small compared to other museums in NYC.*************FREE on Thursdays between 7-9PM.********** Do come early cause the line does get LONG!
I have a Master degree in Fine Arts from Pratt institute, so I understand that art work at the New Museum of Contemporary Art ( and any other) must be tightly guarded and protected, yet this is not an excuse to harass the visitors, following them for no reason as soon as they arrived to the exhibit rooms, lecturing to don’t pass certain point, as mere assumption because in reality the visitor haven’t crossed any line ( we know the rules) is impossible enjoy a show like that without feeling like an intruder, I have vast experience in museums and art galleries because of my field I believe I know all of them in NYC. I had never experienced anything like. It don’t end there, the staff in charge of guarding the artwork is rude and condescending at best. ( “I am not talking to you’’ they shut my friend, excuse me?) Asking for your ticket every time you go to a different room once inside the museum, is plenty ridiculous and aggravating (never seen anything like before..)Ms Phillips if allowed your employees mistreat visitor that are paying $18 to visit your small museum, is the way to look VIP you get it all wrong. Save your money, don’t go there there’s plenty bigger cheaper betters museums in NYC where visitors are treated as they are, the one that keep the museum in service, visitor are the reasons why museum exist, there’s no reason to make them feel small or like intruders, so your employees can feel better about themselves.
Love it! Plenty to do. All kinds of interesting, sometimes shocking exhibits, shows (VC Davis, e.g., my fav), and such a bright spot in the downtown community. Ive been taking my kids since they were little little (when appropriate), arms we love it, are happy to support it. Were happy to hit it whenever we can!
I went to the New Museum for free when they had the New Museum block party, which had free water and bananas from Whole Foods, performances and arts and crafts for kids and also free admission when you get stamped. The New Museum has some pretty interesting exhibits from time to time. Once they had a 3 story high slide, a carousel and upside down glasses. Other times, the exhibits did not interest me. There is also a great view of the city on the top floor where you can see the Brooklyn Bridge and Empire State Building - be sure to check it out!
This place has a great open minded direction, so it always depends on the expo that they have if i have a blast or i just feel i waste my time. The here and there exhibition has some nice photography and movies worthy to see. go tot the 7th floor for the sky room view
A refreshing multi-modal presentation covering art, multimedia, some sculpture. Bound to see something different anytime you visit, since they plan different themes and give opportunity to many new artist that have still not made it. Enjoyed gender as a tool and weapon theme in my visit - dec 2017. Give yourself an hour and a half. They also have a cozy coffee shop and store .
Ive been to this museum a few times in the past few years and its always been a hit or miss. I think your experience will depend on the exhibits so I suggest doing your research online before making the trek out there. With that being said, my most recent experience was great. Per coverage of the Pipolotti Rist: Pixel Forest installation, my expectations were high and it didnt disappoint. Previous experiences of the museum were a bit lackluster as the artwork was a little too abstract for my taste but if all else fails, definitely check out the rooftop on the weekends when it is open. It has sweeping views of the LES that are picture worthy.
Ive only been to the New Museum once, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. I find that the works are a lot more interesting than those of MoMA. Im an artsy person, so sometimes artwork thats too abstract is lost on me. With this in mind, the New Museums works really suit my taste. I did get in a bit to trouble for touching the art on the second floor. Not sure what the strange silo type things that were attached to the wall were, they were definitely the exception to my overall experience of loving the museum.
We went when they were in between exhibitions, so only a few floors were open, which Im sure contributed to our underwhelming experience. That said, they seem to have a great PR engine -- pitching that a whole floor was turned into a space ship sounded like a really cool place to take my kids, but in fact, it was boring and there was a warning about an inappropriate video in one of the rooms. Security didnt seem comfortable having kids in the galleries, so while I would visit again, but I wouldnt bring my kids.
Well if you are crazy or if you are always high on rubber cement well this is the place for you. I mean if you are interested into mordern art, not the old oil paintings but mixed media arts or if you are or trying to be a hipster this is could be your home for real. Nice architecture, clean and cool environment mostly depending on the art exhibitions. But over all darn it is a real cool place for young people.
The first time I saw it I was all like Boring!. This is a white cube with more white cubes put on top of it. Second time I saw it they had a ship installed on the outside of it. Literally hanging off the facade. That particular exhibition was great. The space in itself ... surprisingly small rooms over 6 floors, with bright green elevators and a small staircase. Its basically white cubes stock piled on top of more cubes. So its perfect for modern art. The best bit: they have a terrace on the 7th floor with amazing views of downtown Manhattan, without the pushy cocktails crowd that you normally get with views like this.
I think most of the reviews I see here are highly unfair. New museum may not have ample space as the met or Moma, but it definitely has the freshest art. It has found its niche as a strictly contemporary art museum, which sets it apart from other institutions. I always see something I never saw before here. It does not mean they are always mind blowing but they always have some experimental spirit to it.
This is a very odd museum. Maybe the architect wanted the floor plan to be playful, but mostly its just weird, with a cramped stairway leading from one floor to the next. Not a large building, and a massive waste of space. As far as the shows, they are unfailingly cutting edge modern -- to the point where you can argue if this is truly art -- and range from excellent to craft-fair caliber. Its also expensive, but theres a free night (currently Thursdays). Its nearly impossible to spend more than a half hour here, and most of that will be in the excellent gift/book shop.
The staff is extremely pretentious and rude, and the guards in this museum watch you like hawks to the point of following you around right beside you so its difficult to even focus on the art. The art is verrrryyyy out there, so keep an open mind - everyone is too serious about it there!
This Museum is so weird man... I have a free pass so I check it out frequently... Favorite spot is definitely the view from the roof. Sometimes I even go just for that! Most of the exhibitions are mediocre and weird. I hate when they bring Instagram-art, where people are lining up endlessly just so that the go crazy afterwards in social media. Art shouldnt be about that... And museums shouldnt promote this mentality either
The museum has some interesting exhibitions which are quite different from other contemporary museums in the city. However, the 1 star grade is for a lack of consideration. Im totally traumatized yesterday by a graphic video on the second floor. The video showed a woman giving birth. For those who has seen this kind of videos, you know what it is like. Ive never seen a birth-giving video before. Without any warning, I was exposed to the horrific scene. Some people, as myself, are very sensitive to bleeding images and wounds. At least there should be visible sign that says Graphic image. Viewer discretion is encouraged.
Contemporary art museum. Check their website to see their current shows as they dont have a collection but a rotating program. The team of curator is pretty varied so from one time to another you could see the youngest artists to the most established from the most conceptual to the most luscious painter. Pay as you wish on Thursdays from 7 to 9 pm.
The Sarah Lucas show was amazing, her work is extraordinary. However when I went on Tuesday afternoon, the security guard at the front door was very hostile towards me, asking for documents for my service dog, which is illegal and I told him, still he persisted until I took papers out of my service dogs vest pocket before he backed off. This was illegal to ask for documents as there are no required paperwork for SDs and the staff at a large museum should know better than to barrate the disabled guests immediately upon entry.

2022-03-24New Museum is awesome! It has great exhibitions and very greatly done design shop with local design, great books and more. The only thing I wanted to see and it was closed was the sky room with the view, they told us it will be open the following day, but it was not.

2022-06-07Visited here to observe the Faith Ringgold exhibit. The flow of people into the venue was organized and controlled. We really loved the exhibition! We did not know that Faith had such an extensive collection of extraordinary art. We were pleased that we were able to experience her creativity.

2022-05-12I throughly enjoyed my visit to the New Museum. It was my first experience there. The facility was very accessible and the Faith Ringgold exhibit was excellent!

2021-12-06This was a low-quality museum for the price paid. A handful of the docents were super sweet but the negative always weighs more and there were super judgmental docents that sadly I will not forget. While I am not an art expert of any kind, I visit museums from time to time when I travel. And this place was, overall, a joke. Lots of weird crap—some literally looked like trash. I mostly paid to see a collection of trash. The movie was cool though. Do better or make this place free!

2022-05-23Great exhibit! Faith Ringgold. Only downside--not enough benches for us old folks. Also, a deal with a parking lot would help

2021-07-31Smaller museums can be a hit or miss depending on exhibits. The day I went to the New Museum, it was all misses. The entire building was pretty much filled with video installation art. Its a shame, because I do feel the building has enough space for the curators to fill it with mixture of exhibits that appeal to wider group of audience. The top floor has a nice view but the doors to outside were locked and the floor looked unfinished. At $18, it’s a steep price of admission, so be sure to check the website to see the exhibits appeal to you before stopping by.

2022-03-28Great exhibition of Faith Ringgold. Museum is a rather badly designed place with very bad galleries and stairwells. Come see the art, despite the bad space.

2022-03-04I had unintentionally purchased the tickets for my friends and I for the previous Sunday instead of this past Sunday and realized right when we were walking up to the counter and I pulled up the ticket on my email. I was 100% prepared to have to turn back around and apologize profusely to my friends. Instead, the employees changed our ticket reservation around right there to the correct day and made sure we kept our student discount. Extremely helpful, and the manager knew just what to do! It was so lovely of them. The museum exhibit itself was amazing, being able to trace Faith Ringgolds body of work and career through time felt truly special, Im so glad we were about to see three floors just dedicated to her and the things she has done. I felt that the spaces were set up well, with plenty of room for people to walk around each other and not crowd the art. My only wish is the placards were a little bigger because we all needed to wait turns for people to read them, as everyone was getting really close to them to read what they said.Overall a great experience, and I hope to come again for a new exhibit in the future!
