New York Blood Center in other cities:
Ive had the most difficult time donating blood here through no fault of NYBC. I was either too anemic or discovering Id developed hypertension. Thanks for letting me know! So I honestly expected something to go wrong this time as well.My appointment was to donate plasma. I figured I would be less wiped out that way. Next time Im donating platelets because I have too many of them anyway. The process was more interactive than I expected. I thought I was going to just lay back and read some fan fic. Nope. I had to keep squeezing a rubber bulb and my machine kept alarming. Come to find out that my phlebotomist was the worst one there and didnt give me correct information. And worse is relative because all the others were outstanding. The thing about a plasma donation is that they extract the plasma then return your red blood cells to you. A plasma or platelet donation is different from whole blood in that they get three times as much of plasma or platelets in one go. But the return is why I didnt get a chance to read. Though my The phlebotomist said I didn’t have to watch the machine (wrong) I had to watch the machine in order to not pump the bulb during the blood return. When she had me doing it before, the machine kept buzzing and shutting off. Youd think the 3rd time she had to reset it she would have realized it was a problem. Good thing she wandered away and a better phlebotomist explained what was going on.With all the squeezing and watching, the 40 minute donation time surprisingly flew by. Now comes the best part... the cranberry juice and Laura Doone cookies! All the juice and cookies you want! I was in competition with another donor for the cranberry juice. I got the last one! Ha! This is when I got my chance to read. Theres no rush. They really dont want you fainting on them, so hydrate as much as you need to. Theres deliciously cold water as well.Pro Tip: Bring your donor card. You dont need it, theyll ask for state ID instead, but its just easier to scan it than to manually type your information in.Plus you earn points for merch! Looks like 600 points is the minimum to cash out and at that level you get various $25 gift cards. Im torn between Amazon or Bed Bath & Beyond because I want a new vacuum cleaner and I dont know which is the better deal. I got 75 points for this donation so Ive got... 96 donations more to go for a top of the line Dyson!!!Yeah... thats not happening ANY time soon.
I just came to donate after making an appointment online days in advance. I waited for about 10-15 mins for someone to take my temp and to fill out the questionnaire. The nurse who took my pulse/iron and helped me with the questionnaire was very nice and straight forward. I was told to wait in the canteen and wait for someone to call for me so I can donate. I waited about 45 minutes then asked a nurse walking by if there was any ETA on when I can start my donation and he said someone would be out soon. I waited another hour then was told by an employee that they were closed and that I was waiting in the area where people have finished their donation. I was confused as the nurses instructed me to wait where I was sitting and the nurse I asked 45 mins later didn’t point this out me. The employees are all very nice but I basically wasted half of my day off to do nothing. I’m surprised something like this could happen when there is such a high demand for blood and supplies are so low. I recommend looking elsewhere to donate like a hospital or a mobile bank. This is the second time I’ve visited this location and been told I cannot donate. This makes no sense since I’m a healthy 21 year old and a universal donor.
Following a rule change in June 2020, I am now able to donate blood. I made an appointment online, but when I turned up, there was no record of the appointment Id booked. No problem, the woman called myself and the other person waiting back and everything was running well, until the woman went to lunch. Then I got stuck waiting for an interview, while the new person waived another 5 people in & once she had all of those organised, I was seen. I walked back and was initially ignored by the woman in the donation area. I was then told to take a seat, while at the same time the guy who I had initially walked back with, and the only person donating blood at the time, had just finished his donation. To make matters worse, another guy who walked in after me, was hooked up for his donation while I was still waiting there patiently or more honestly, impatiently by that stage, to be seen to.Im used to most blood donation places being full of friendly people who are appreciative of the fact that youve taken time out to donate. Not this place. They made me feel as though I was putting them out.
I had a great experience! I went on a Saturday and was there for 90 minutes in total- it was very busy. Everyone I encountered was extremely friendly and helpful, especially the woman working at the front desk. A special shout out to Nilsa the phlebotomist who made my time there enjoyable! She was the best phlebotomist I’ve had yet. Y lo mejor es que la mayoría hablan español.
The staff is great - lots of laughter and all in good spirits, which makes it easy to relax. Shout out to Rosa who took excellent care of me! After a rough 1st donation experience at Grand Central, I thought I was just someone who “couldn’t handle giving blood”. So glad I tried this location, now I’m a donor for life.
Just terrible. The staff was very friendly but the nurse was extremely rude.I waited for 110 minutes before even seeing the nurse and getting my vitals checked (rudely). And when I was sent to the back to donate, I was told the beds were full and was sent back front. After waiting for a total of about 2 hours (Aka they ran 2 hrs late of my appointment), I gave up and left.Tried to help out during the corona crisis but ended up somewhere worse than the DMV.
Usually a rude, surly and negative experience. You are forced to make an appointment online, but they never honor it and are usually an hour behind. Donors are trying to do something positive for our city and community, but and good vibes you may have are quashed by the people that work here. Last 2 times I came to donate it took about 2 hours or more. Unbelievable.
I am very disappointed with this place. I came To support my husband while he donates his blood and as soon as we walk in the women at the front desk were So Rude! They are not welcoming at all , while I am very sure that it is in their job description to be very friendly, compassionate and enthusiastic but Failed to do so.How can you be so unwelcoming to the people who are about to donate for a good cause?Their Attitudes include rolling of the eyes and speaking to you as if they are more superior than you. Someone in a higher position needs to give them a pep talk on how to treat and speak to their Patients.
The front office staff are very nice and pretty efficient, and I have no specific complaints about the staff in the back either. But the organization there is lacking. My boyfriend and I had an appointment for 11:30 am Saturday to give convalescent COVID blood. We finally got in to get registered around 12:00. I was able to donate and be finished by 12:40 but my boyfriend got delayed a little and then they started only taking in platelet donors. He was finally taken in at 1:30.Make early appointments so you don’t get lost in the shuffle.
Donated most of what they usually take because I had to be taken off early due to some fatigue I was feeling. It was my first time donating and I should’ve ate more recently. The people were kind, and I’m thankful that they took care of me. Only thing I would say is that one of the ladies wasn’t very kind to me, she wasn’t unfriendly but some people need an extremely positive environment if they’re coming there to donate blood. It’s a little scary so that would help a tremendous amount. Thank you for taking care of me again, I’ll be donating closer to my house next time (I chose that location cause my friends were closer to there).
I remember back in high school that I made my first blood donation. This was almost 9 years ago. I always wanted to give back and since I am a big boy, I can do it. Anyway, this is a good location for me and the staff were very friendly to me. I know a few of them and because of that, my experience was enjoyable and worthwhile. I was also selected as a match one time and the transport got me there on time. Although the initial needle punchure always hurts, it gradually settles. The staff also accommodated my every need whether Im cold or uncomfortable. Finally, it is easy to get to and it is near some restaurants should I go hungry. It makes me very proud to be a donor.
This place is grossly incompetent. I researched online to see if I could donate blood since I had gotten a tattoo in Connecticut 7 months earlier and everything online said I could. I told Michael and the supervisor that I had looked on American Red Cross website stating that only 11 states were given a time restriction and they said that they werent affliated with them and the NYC blood center might have stricter restrictions which is fair. The supervisor was pretty rude about it. Then I pulled up the NYC blood center website while still there and showed Michael the same thing I saw on the Red cross website. He was like you cant believe everything on the internet, maybe it still has to be updated, maybe there wasnt enough space to list all the states blah blah blah. He legit thought New Jersey was the only place regulated. I was incredulous. How can their own website not be up to date?? Do they not train their employees to do their jobs and know their policies? We trust these people to know who can and cannot donate blood yet they cant be bothered to learn the simple criteria? What a joke, waste of time and inconsiderate of them. Then Michael tells me hes going to look in to it and to give corporate a call -- for what? To tell them you and your supervisor are incompetent and rude? I get it was 4:10 pm and you close at 4:15 as your supervisor so kindly pointed out but dont schedule appointments at 4 pm then. Dont bother with these people - go elsewhere.
Usually, I have a good experience at this blood donation center. I do the questionnaire, get screened, and sit down. This whole process takes about 10 minutes. However, I went today, and they were pretty busy. I can understand theres a wait. However, I will not recommend the lady who screened me. She is by far the most incompetent person who works there. I think her name is Mary. Shes a skinny Black lady with a little accent. If you can, please avoid her at all costs.First, she looked like she didnt want to be there. Thats fine. However, you still have a job to do. She tried scanning my ID card, but it wouldnt go through. I suggested that she try to manually type it, but she claimed she had to follow the operating procedure. She was gone for about 5 minutes, came back, and manually entered the number. She wasted time for nothing. She asked what countries I visited, and I told her. She went to look in her book, and I assured her that I donated before. They have my donation history in the file, considering the last time I went (which was last week), they told me the last time I donated. She checked her book of countries to see if I was medically cleared. She was very lazy about the screening process as well. She took my HCT and had the thermometer under my tongue. She put in a sample of my blood in the HCT reader and left to go elsewhere. The number popped up, and this was the first time the number went away. She took that long to come back. What a horrible worker. This other lady screened 3 people by the time I was done. Thats why I call Mary grossly incompetent.Anyway, I went to sit down, and I was really hoping the Black nurse/HCA would do it because I think hes the most experienced, and Ive had nothing but good experiences. I waited patiently, then Mary came and said she would handle it. She asked me for my name again and seemed to not remember me at all. Thats okay. I think she would remember because I only saw her like 30 minutes ago.She went off to look in her book of how to again, and did the poking. It hurt like usual which isnt a problem. However, she retracted the syringe, applied a lot more pressure on the cuff, and stuck me again. It hurt a bit, but I thought it was fine. I asked her to relieve some pressure because my arm was getting numb. She said to wait a bit. No, youre supposed to attend to the Pts concerns. If I dont have feeling on my arm, you have to try to alleviate that. Why is this incompetent person here? Finally, after a minute or 2, she relieved pressure, and everything was fine. Then the machine kept beeping stating that there wasnt enough pressure. She didnt get the vein. She opened up the bandage to reveal a giant bruise on the spot she did the IV on. Then she claimed that I had sensitive veins and that I should apply ice on it.This lady was extremely condescending and such an absolute dunce. I like donating blood, but I hope to never have her for any part of the process whether it be the screening or blood drawing.
I will never go to this blood center again matter fact I will never donate blood again. I go there to donate blood, the nurse Kelly put the needle into my vein incorrect and the wrong-way which cause my arm to swell and cause me to be in pain. Then Kelly and another nurse tried to blame me for causing my own arm to swell and bruising saying that I moved my right arm which made the needle be out of place, creating pain and issue. I got home and started vomiting. I did eat breakfast before I got there. Im considered of suing them since I cant move my arm right freely and bend it. My lawyer will contact them for their malpractice. These people need to take responsibility for their actions and be held accountable.
Overall fantastic experience! This is their main location and is wonderful -- I went to donate and was in and out in 20 minutes! Very speedy, and the staff is friendly. Worth taking a detour to visit. As a bonus, they have TVs and magazines for donors, in addition to lots of food and drinks.
I visited for a White Blood Cell (Mononuclear Cell) Donation, on Wednesday December 20th. I was provided with transportation from Huntington into Manhattan. The procedure took longer than just whole blood but there was a hospital patient in need and I was a match. They made me feel needed, as I know I was. I am a regular platelet donor in Melville and have made just over 50 donations (w/this last one)
This blood bank used chimps for decades doing research on them. Those that survived were abandoned on islands in Liberia without food or water. Animals rights organizations had to step in to keep them from starving and dehydrating to their death. This is an abomination that the New York Blood Center could use them and then discard them like a piece of garbage. I you plan on donating blood, seek out another location to do so. NYBC has no ethics and should not be in business. Shameful what they have done.
The chimpanzees are part of our ancestry as humans, so much alike you used them, perhaps abused them to get what you needed from them in the name of science, and now you abandon them and neglect them. Where is your humanity? it is your moral obligation to continue the care for these creatures. May a sense of gratitude, responsibility and love comes over the people that made the cruel and cold decision of abandoning them to oblivion, so that they rectified their decision and care for these animals forever.
Donated here I could relate on the inside it is a great clean usually quiet place, I know Im saving a life so I asked them I know Im suppose to save a life arent we all but how would I receive payment of such they in formed me of something there doing but still Illhelp sorry for not keeping it simple enough as a closing but do I help, no do I.
New York Blood Center has tortured, abused many chimpanzees and then dumped them on small islands off the coast of Africa. On one of the islands all of the abandoned chimpanzees died. On another island these abused animals only survive from day to day by virtue of volunteers bringing them bits of food. The capture of chimpanzees by the New York Blood Center is equally cruel with the mothers being shot and the babies abducted, chimpanzees who came to the rescue where also shot. the New York Blood Centre is a cruel and evil orgnization which needs to take responsibility for these abandoned and tortured animals. Shame on the New York Blood Centre and anyone who has anything to do with this cruel organization. Shame.
After conducting invasive research experiments on almost 500 chimpanzees for 30 years and promising to provide the survivors with lifelong care, the New York Blood Center abandoned them with no food or water on islands in Liberia, leaving them to die of starvation and thirst, as reported in the NY Times on May 28th, 2015. NYBC, which has earned an estimated $500 million in royalties off of the research conducted on these chimps, cannot shift the financial burden of caring for them to animal welfare groups or the government of Liberia, as it is attempting to do. As Jane Goodall noted in an open letter to NYBC, the organization has “moral obligation” to pay for the care of these chimps.

2022-01-02I have been donating Platelets at New York Blood Center in Lake Success and also Huntington Long Island 11 times in 2021 since July. Platelets are part of the blood that helps with clotting post surgical. Platelets only last 5 days for use. The NYBC has contacted me several times about Blood emergencies in 2021. The people at these locations could not have been more professional concerned or friendly. They do keep an eye on everything . I will continue to give as often as possible. Yes the Pandemic has people nervous but the staff here is very good at safety and cleaning between donors.

2022-07-25Donating blood is SO important!! I realized after coming in, people dont donate 2/3s as much since the Covid pandemic in 2020. I didnt know how much platelets and blood donating is needed in hospitals to save lives of people on a daily basis-- and theres not enough!?! They had a special promotion too where I got 2 tickets to the Mets after donating..! What a deal!! The in-out time took like 2 hours though, and I dont like needles. Free snacks after, but no cranberry juice?

2022-06-27How does a place like the New York City blood center only have one size BP cuff the check blood pressure?I took time out of two days to get down here to donate and both times they only had a small sized BP cuff. Not only is it incredibly unprofessional but they are wasting peoples time that want to donate.Time to reassess the circus that you have going on at 67th street and get your act together

2022-03-08I donated blood to them numerous times with no problems. It went downhill when I moved south. They continually bombard me with text messages and robocalls. I have blocked several of their texts and calls, but they keep coming. Called them to take me off the list and all I get is ATTITUDE. The daily and weekly bombardment of texts and calls continue. Sorry I ever got mixed up with them.

2022-06-04Had 1 hour and 45 min to give double red blood cells. 15 min to use a computer, 30 min wait to see the only nurse, 10 minutes to get a bed, then 10 minutes waiting to be attended to before I got up and said I’m out of time. Got to the one near grand central, they’ll have a needle in your arm in 20 min.

2022-01-02Do not come to this place on a Sunday, not sure about any other day. I was scheduled at 1:30pm and I am still waiting over 1 hour later to just get the pre-screen with hemoglobin and blood pressure. When asked how long it will take? Staff is unsure. There is a shortage of blood. This could be adding to the problem. They are not making it too easy for the donors. Never had this problem at other locations.

2021-11-08DONT GO TO THIS SITE!Really disappointed with this place and the overall experience from giving blood here. On 10/27/21, I donated and knew something was wrong during it. The girl who applied the tourniquet and found the vein was concerned about something but reassuring, not articulating her show of concern when I asked. The person she got to review what she did was concerned but reassuring as well, not verbally acknowledging an issue when I asked. The supervisor or manager came over with both employees and looked, also not verbally stating an issue. I finally got them to tell me what they were so concerned about as they weren’t hovering over any of the other donors that were there. My rate of bleeding was very fast from what they said and that no one there had seen it done that fast. I filled the pint or amount in 3 minutes and 33 seconds. I could overhear the two employees even in the distance joking about tapping a artery. Something I dismissed, as I felt fine I thought and didn’t want to create any anxiousness. This would definitely change later. As my arm went on to swell up, skin turn black and purple, tingling, lose warmth from lack of circulation and become sore from continuing to bleed within my arm. I ended up in NYU, where my personal doctor said more than likely they tapped my artery which has higher pressure and I continued bleeding in my forearm/bicep. Last Friday, I finished a MRI all related to this and my arm is still sore with purple bruising from the blood that is sitting on top of my tendons/muscles. My range of motion is limited from the hardened blood in my arm and has great moments of discomfort. Hopefully, this shall take a couple weeks to resolve but it won’t be a big issue according to my doctor. All of this as an experience, I would not recommend going to this location at this time. If the cause wasn’t positive, I would be far more upset. Providing things keep it’s course, I wouldn’t go here again and I have already discouraged friends/coworkers from doing the same.

2021-09-12I donated a few times at this location and never had any issues. I had to make an online appointment each time and waited for about 10-15 minutes upon arrival, which is quite understandable. The staff is quite friendly and very fast to respond to nonstandard situations. I witnessed another donor fainting after donating, and the team took care of them within the next 5 seconds providing excellent and prompt patient care!
