Dr. Nathaniel Tindel, orthopedic spine surgeon, was an absolute pleasure. He was generous with his time and an excellent listener. His evaluation was thorough and his communication skills were exceptional.Given his reputation, I was concerned about waiting too long for an appointment. But his assistant worked hard to get me in as quickly as possible. It was a wonderful experience all around.Dr. Raymond Lightstone
Biggest mistake of my life having surgeries performed by Dr Tindel. He lied on multiple occasions both prior to and after the two surgeries. For example: He told after first surgery that I had 6 screws implanted in spine instead the expected 4 screws.A few months later I discovered at Sollis Health that I had 10 screws and 2 rods and why would I think that. I actually had a witness with me having stitches removed and he specifically pointed to the area of 6 screws. Then later said I must have misunderstood him . That maybe I was referring to stitches. He will act kind a personable but dont let this fool you. He is a scam artist that caused great deal of physical damage and not to mention pain and extreme stressTwice he left me in post-op for 12-14 hours from two surgeries. When you cant reach him he doesnt call back. He says he is in surgery...MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE HE I A LIAR. If I can save anybody from the malpractice of this doctor it will be worth my time to write this review.
Dr. Tindel is AMAZING!!!! My husband had pain in his neck for about two months. Once is right arm was numb we knew we needed to get help. Dr. Tindel was recommended to us after we already went to other doctors. Once we sat and spoke to Dr.Tindel he knew exactly what my husband had, where other doctors said it was something else. His surgical team is also amazing! They called me once the procedure started, in the middle and at the end letting me know how everything was going easing my mind during the three hour surgery. Even the nurses at the hospital were saying how great he is not only as a surgeon but as a person which made me feel my husband was in great hands!!!!
I had a fusion done by Dr Tindel in 2016. He is above and beyond any doctor i had been to in the previous 15 years. I had been dealing with spondylolisthesis for years. His bedside manner is incredible. his knowledge and expertise are the best. If you found this man consider yourself lucky, you found the best! Dr Tindel and his staff are better than anyone could hope for!
5.0 star rating 11/2/2017Two years ago I was diagnosed with an infection in my spine. The infection was actually eating up the bones in my spine. I was in severe pain for 3 months going from Orthopedist, Neurologist, and Pain management doctors. Finally, I ended up in the emergency room on Christmas eve. Dr Tindel explained my situation and told me I needed to have surgery and antibiotic therapy or my spine would completely deteriorate. His bedside manner was so soothing and he was so kind that I immediately trusted Dr Tindel and underwent the extensive surgery he suggested. I was told the surgery lasted 8 hours and that Dr Tindel was such a perfectionist, that he took 45 minutes to put in one screw. I am now here to tell the tale because of Dr Tindel. I highly recommend Dr Tindel to anyone who has a spinal issue.
I first met with Dr. Tindel to get a second opinion on a multiple herniated lumbar disc diagnosis given to me by a very hasty clinic in midtown who had a PA read me the imaging report in the waiting room. I dont think Id gotten such difficult news in such a careless way ever in my life, so a friend suggested I see Dr. Tindel.Dr. Tindel received my images and had me come in. He took a very detailed clinical exam and talked with me to get my history and symptoms, and only after that did he review my images. It turns out that not everything on an MRI is truly symptomatic: they show a lot of false positives, and as a firm believer in avoiding surgery until it is absolutely necessary, he narrowed my case down to one particularly troublesome disc, and we did everything we could to avoid surgery.Due to my particular case, though, surgery was unavoidable. He and his team operated on me and did such a fantastic job that I walked out of the hospital that day, and was back on my feet walking nearly 2 miles a day within a week. (I was back to work four days after surgery—not at 100%, but I was ready to get outta the house!)Hes been very supportive and attentive in all my follow-up visits, and his staff have worked to help smooth over my many complicated interactions with my insurance company. The least complicated surgery is the one you avoid having: thanks to Dr. Tindel, I now know that the best surgeon is the one who sees surgery as the last resort.
If you ever have a spine issue, go to this man.I had a pinched nerve and couldnt walk for a week. Got referred to Dr. Tindel through another orthopedist. My case was bad, and required surgery.Dr. Tindel made it a point to communicate with my family, educate me and my friends, and never recommended/pushed the surgery if we were uncomfortable. The fact he followed up with my family during and post surgery meant the world.Dude is an all-star and deserves all the shine.
Could not be more impressed with Dr. Tindel and his staff. I came in not being able to walk — literally dragging my left leg with me. I tried PT and Chiropratic work, none of which brought me much relief. After an MRI showed that my disc was pushing on my nerve, I knew that surgery was going to be the only thing to help alleviate the pain and get me back to running, hiking, etc. Dr. Tindel is INCREDIBLY informative, has unparalleled bed side manner, and is a very calming person to talk to — back surgery is no joke. Even on the day of surgery, his entire team was super professional and caring. I woke up with no pain (except where they had just done the surgery), but all the other pain was gone. I wholeheartedly recommend him and wish I could give him 10 stars. Everyone I spoke to, from my primary care to my chiropractor, even the folks at the MRI place all said wonderful things about Dr. Tindel. If youre looking for a surgeon to help with your back issues, he is it. I couldnt be more impressed. THANK YOU!!!
Dr.Nathaniel Tindel is the best spine doctor in New York city. He is kind, clear, informative in his analysis of all the information he gathers about his patients. He uses all of this to advise patients the best solutions available to them. When needed, he is the best spine surgeon we have. His support staff is of the same caliber. I will be forever grateful to him.
In short: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! The past two months have been tough for my lower back, but I can only imagine how much harder it would have been if I didnt have Dr.Tindel and his entire staff. They are informative, extremely hospitable, and go above and beyond expectations in terms of what Im used to with other doctors in the past. Read on...I first went to Dr. Tindel in 2012 with a herniated disc (L5 S1). We went through the proper procedures, and I was able to resume my normal routine. Sept 2015: the pain came back with a vengeance, even after another epidural. Some nights I could barely sleep due to the pain. When he saw I was starting to have a slight weakness in my leg/foot, he outlined my options: another epidural, steroids, or surgery. After he thoroughly informed me of what the procedure would entail, any and all risks, recovery time, etc., I ended up choosing to have micosurgery on the disc Throughout the entire process, Dr. Tindel and his entire staff were polite, helpful, and incredibly accommodating to my questions, needs, etc. The wound on my back has taken longer to heal than usual, but Dr. Tindel and his staff did not hesitate to always answer any and all questions and guide me through the recovery process, checking in on me to make sure I was healing properly. He invited me to call him if I had any concern, and would even initiate the call to check in and make sure I was OK. Unlike other practices I have visited, Dr. Tindel and his staff always gave me the time each patient deserves, and were kind and courteous throughout.
On November 10, 2017, I fell about 12 feet onto my back and fractured my spine in three places. While in the hospital, very concerned and nervous, wondering if I was ever going to be okay again, I received a visit from Dr. Tindel. He immediately put my mind at ease. When he left my hospital room, I knew I was going to be alright. Now almost a year later, I can lead the normal life of a 19 year old girl. I cannot begin to tell you how grateful my family and I are to Dr. Tindel. Truly the most kind, thorough, and capable doctor around!
Dr. Tindel is an incredible physician and kind & caring. I was referred to him after seeing two other doctors and on meds and having received 2 epidural steroid injections. I have degenerative disc disease in my neck and was in excruciating pain, it was intolerable. I suffered for 4 weeks, with no relief. The pain was in my neck and radiated down my left arm with numbness and tingling in 3 fingers.Dr. Tindel saw me the same day I was referred. He took the time to go through my diagnosis and prognosis. I have had this condition for 15+ years with the last episode over 5 yrs ago. The idea of surgery always scared me, but Dr. Tindel put my mind at ease and explained everything. I was in surgery one week later. Two discs in my neck were removed and the bones fused. I awoke from the operation without pain except for the anticipated pain at the incision and the back of my neck. Oh, yes and youll have to deal with a sore throat for about a week. But compared to where I was, pain meds helped after surgery and one week later I was on a plane on a pre-planned trip.I am so fortunate to have found Dr. Tindel. I highly recommend him!
Dr. Tindel is Mensch, a man with high integrity and honor. He is skilled, smart and compassionate. His techniques and knowledge are current but his style and approach hark back to the pre-hmo days.I suffered from a herniated disk that actually broke into pieces and started to cause paralysis. The nurses told me that I was lucky to have Tindel operate on me. They said his patients do not need to return for a second operation. After the operation within a night I went from being bed ridden in unbelievable agony to walking with controlled pain. My post op experience was good and the pain abated. When visiting Dr. Tindels office, be prepared for a doctor who takes the time to listen to you. He seeks to understand who you are as a person not just who you are as a possessor of an injured spine. He is in no hurry chats lets you relax and watches how you really move. Of course, the downside to his approach is that you spend extra time waiting because he doesnt rush any patient.Dr. Tindel is no cowboy. He only cuts as a last resort. He actually wrote a book Ive Got Your Back that condemns colleagues for performing unnecessary procedures and putting their patients at risk. Years ago, I sent my mother to see him after a doctor said she needed and operation. Now, years later with only PT and an occasional steroid injection she is traveling the world.
I have been suffering from sciatic pain for 19 years, as of 2020 I also started to loose strength in my left leg, making it hard to walk. I am in my 30s, and have been athletic my whole life. I have tried PT, chiropractic care, acupuncture, meds, herbal treatments, an epidural shot. electrical treatment, working out.. anything suggested to me to avoid spinal surgery. Once I no longer could walk or work I checked myself into a hospital and had the luck of having Dr. Nathaniel Tidel as my surgeon. He met with me the day before and discussed what was wrong and what he suggested. He took his time had great bedside manner and really explained what was going on. The next day I went to surgery, woke up and the pain was already gone! And my strength was already back in my leg. Honestly Dr. Nathaniel saved my life. Since the surgery he and his staff, Annie (she deserves a shot out) have answered every one of my questions and concerns, and I have had a lot! If either of you read this THANK YOU.
Dr Tindel, Anna,Keshia and the rest of his team are the best. Had to have two back procedures at the same time. After 6.5 hours of surgery I was up and walking the next day and was able to go home on the third. After 2 weeks I am well on my was to a full recovery. Can not thank Dr Tindel and his team enough for everything they have done for me. I would highly recommend them to all my friends and family.
My husband needed an emergency surgery due to a severe radiculopathy affecting his L5,S1. We were very apprehensive about the mere thought that surgery had to be done but were kind of left with no choice because of the severity of his condition. At first, the hospital itself was a pure nightmare until Dr.Tindel got in the picture. He was very supportive and educated my husband of his procedure: Microdisectomy and Laminectomy. The surgery was successful, the initial pain intense but all this was anticipated by the Doctor. However, the recovery and the benefits of the surgery were seen almost immediately. My husband was living with pain for over 10yrs until Dr. Tindel came to the rescue. We are VERY grateful for Dr.Tindel.
My husband was rushed to Jacobi hospital for a herniated disc that was about to leave him paralyzed and in excruciating pain. After 3 days, an MRI confirmed that he needed surgery. When we met with Dr.Tidel and his resident we were left assured that my husband was going to get better, explained every possible scenario of the procedure and possible modifications that would be made once they had a clearer view of the hernia.Sure the pain was bad, but my husband immediately was able to stand up and walk the next day after years of a progressive pain that lead his to the ER.UNFORTUNATELY, Jacobi hospital is not the best place to be a patient. The nurses are rude, loud and unattentive. You have to consistently remind them that your loved one is in pain for them to bother assisting with medication or a meat blanket. Silence is key in recovery and the nurse staff clearly have no knowledge of that. Nonetheless, that will not affect the rating of the awesome Doctor and his surgical team that saved my husbands life.I would recommend Dr.Tindel to anyone and believe that he has a compassionate and sincere heart for his patients.
I would never, ever recommend this physician to anyone. After trying anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and two epidural steroid injections, I consulted with Dr. Tindel about having surgery on my herniated cervical disc. What a mistake.Halfway through our consultation, Dr. Tindel advised me that physical pain has a large psychiatric component. And despite my trying all of the aforementioned treatments (PT, meds, ESIs) over the course of ~1 year, Dr. Tindel recommended I just be patient, and continue waiting things out. When I told Dr. Tindel how much (prescribed) medication I was taking, he made patronizing remarks like, that sure is A LOT of pain youre having -- his clear intimation being that I was over-medicating and/or exaggerating the severity of my symptoms.I went elsewhere immediately. Further diagnostic testing - another MRI and an EMG - showed a clear reason for my physical pain and neurological symptoms. One month later I had surgery with a neurosurgeon at Cornell. At eight weeks post-op I was 100% pain free and off any/all medications. The structural, physical problem in my neck was fully corrected by this other physicians surgical intervention.Had I followed Dr. Tindels strategy - the just wait it out/the pain is in your head approach - Im certain Id still be in an immense amount pain with permanent nerve damage.I write this review in hopes it might help other patients Dr. Tindel gives the pain has a large psychiatric component speech to. If youre genuinely ill or injured and a physician like Dr. Tindel erroneously assumes youre fabricating your illness/injury because of some nonexistent psychiatric issue, please seek out another opinion and pursue other treatment options. The bottom line: Dr. Tindels assumptions about my condition were both insensitive and offensive, but more importantly, they were wholly incorrect.
I went to Dr. Nat Tindel after seeing a few doctors for my herniated disc and sciatica nerve issue. The moment I met him I got such a positive vibe and the way he explained my issue, I felt better already. He is an excellent doctor and is one of the handful ones in NYC who will not suggest you for surgery right away without thorough investigation.
Dr Tindel is a wonderful, caring orthopedic surgeon who has spent a good deal of time explaining my symptoms and how to remediate them. His office staff have also been extremely helpful. Wonderful to find a specialist with this combination of skill, experience, and concern.
After MRIs, x-rays, epidural injections, chiros, PT, and seeing 3 different orthos (one saw nothing, and 2 said bulging disk), and enduring months of acute sciatica pain, a trusted family physician suggested I travel to NYC to see Dr. Tindel. Having explained my situation to his terrific assistant, he agreed to see me immediately despite a full case load that day (we ultimately met early evening, long after most physicians office hours).I normally do not write reviews, but the experience was so much better than any other physician interaction in recent memory. He poured over the films, was thoughtful and exacting. He conducted several follow-ups with different neuro radiologists to confirm that they too saw the proverbial needle in the haystack that none of the other orthos could find. Ultimately, they did.For months I had been living my life pursuant to missed diagnoses. I now know what is wrong, which allows me to consider my options intelligently and carefully (and also resume normal activity). I am the type who is willing to try everything and anything to avoid a spinal surgery, and then try them again. Thankfully, and despite being a surgeon, Dr. Tindel adheres to the same philosophy.I would, without hesitation, recommend Dr. Tindel to anyone who wants an intelligent, experienced, and thoughtful assessment of a spinal issue.
This team is incredible. Anytime we were concerned, theyd be right there to answer the phone no matter the time, and they would help us out. They took care of me while I was at their office and threw up, called a cab for us (my mom & I), walked us out, they did so much to help us both. We cant thank them enough. Dr. Tindel and his team always answered our questions thoroughly. Him, Annie, and Keshia, are teriffic. They gave my mom peace of mind anytime she had concerns. They checked in with us through our trip home and the days after (were from GA). My family and I are so thankful. I wish I could go here all the time. Theyre so genuine and thoughtful. I miss them! Whoever you are, youll definitely receive exceptional care with this talented team.
Dr.Tindel and his staff are great! He basically saved my quality of life. I had major issues with my neck, within 10 days after meeting with Dr.Muu Nuro surgeon and dr.tindel I was being operated on..It was a 9 1/2 hour procedure and came out great. Thanks againAfter about 2 weeks I was back to work. With the help of star physical therapy I have approximately 85/90 % of my arm and hand back.I was grateful that my primary doctor, dr.bagner sent me in the right direction, which brought me to dr.bagner.Dr.Tindel is one of the most considerate and caring doctors Ive ever met. Also a great surgeon! As well his staff were so helpful and accommodating that any issue I had was dealt with quickly and decisively.Im truly grateful for the care that I received from Dr.Tindel, his staff and Lenox hill hospital. Thanks again EthanSorry for any typos

He was very informative on risk and procedure as well as very supportive and caring. I would recommend him to anyone

2022-02-20My husband was unfortunate enough to land in the Lenox Hill Hospital ER a number of years ago. Dr Tindel was the physician on duty. My husband was in writhing pain and was assessed to have sciatic pain that was quite extreme. Dr Tindel concluded that he was not a surgical candidate. After an MRI was performed, Dr Tindel administered a cortisone shot to my husband’s spine. Within two hours the pain profile went from extreme to extraordinary. My husband was reporting that his legs were on fire. Dr Tindel was not on site but I spoke with him and begged for a neurological consult and was told on clear terms that he could not help my husband. I asked to be reassigned to another doctor and was informed that it was not an option. I questioned why he would not send over a doctor to consult and was told it was not an option. Ten minutes later, Dr Tindel called my husband who was still in writhing pain and saw fit to complain about how insulted he was that I questioned him. He saw fit to put his ego ahead of his patient’s care. He informed us that we would be kicked out of the hospital in the morning and would be visited by the hospital administrator to ensure that we would leave. I was so concerned over the lack of care and his animosity towards us that I slept on the floor of the hospital room that night. The next day we went to HSS where we received proper care and where it was concluded that Dr Tindel administered the cortisone to the wrong area of my husband’s spine. HSS was rightfully appalled at the story we told them and gave us the treatment and care that was needed. This happened many years ago - but his behavior was so appalling that I still feel the anger towards him to this day. Dr Tindel is a businessman - not a caregiver. If my husband was a surgical candidate I feel certain that we would have been treated differently.

2022-08-04Dr.Tindel saved my dad’s life. He had consultations with numerous spine specialists, all of whom were reluctant to even touch him in his then current condition. Dr. Tindel not only created the best plan of action, but caught things other doctors had missed, and was extremely confident in his abilities, rightfully so. He treated my father with kindness and informed care. I highly recommend Dr. Tindel’s expertise and bedside manner to anyone suffering spinal pain.

2021-09-06Dr. Tindel is a godsend - he saved my ability to move and use my right foot & leg. He and his office staff will make you feel seen and heard and they truly care for you and for your healing. Dr. Tindel spent a significant amount of time with me during my first visit and, by watching how I moved, was able to correctly identify the injury in my spine - something that a MRI and multiple other doctors were not able to do. He was so thorough and walked me through all of my options and the risks as at this point I was 6 weeks out from injury which could impact results if I chose surgery (he laid out all of the options and let me choose). I ultimately decided to do surgery for this injury and I am so grateful I did. I am back to having full use of my leg - something I know for a fact I would not have had a not gone to see Dr. Tindel. If you are having any back/spine/paralysis issues, go see Dr. Tindel ASAP!! His office staff is absolutely amazing, too - they walked me through everything and were able to get an emergency surgery scheduled for me during Covid. I will FOREVER be grateful for Dr. Tindel!!!

2019-07-18Dr Tindel was highly recommended to me by my pain management doctor. At first meeting, my husband and I knew why my pain management doctor insisted that we meet with him. Dr Tindel is brilliant, experienced, and more importantly, has a genuine caring for his patients. I really felt that he had my best interest in mind when he determined I needed a microdisectomy. He spent almost 2 hours with us discussing my case and educating us on my injury and the surgery. Although he told me to take my time and think about the surgery, I felt so comfortable with and confident in him to set up my surgery right then and there. The surgery went smoothly and Dr Tindel called me every day for a week following. My recovery also went smoothly, I healed beautifully, and Dr Tindel returned, within minutes, any phone calls I made to him with questions and concerns. He really is an amazing doctor, surgeon and human being!

2019-11-20I have herniated discs that caused me significant pain for about 3 years or so. I had gone to countless physical therapists, acupuncturists, massage therapists etc. to try and address the chronic pain. I was referred to Dr. Tindel earlier this year. Dr. Tindel saw my symptoms and the issues I was going through and after requesting an MRI, decided that surgery was my best option. Dr. Tindel reassured me that this would be the best procedure for me and that it would be his goal to see me recover as close to 100% as possible.I went through with the procedure with Dr. Tindel earlier this summer and can say that I am practically back to 100% already. The pain I was in at times was completely unbearable and I really struggled with depression because of it. To say that I am pretty much pain free is such a blessing and I owe it to Dr. Tindel. Hes a very caring, accommodating doctor who really tries his best to learn your trauma and find the best fixes.

2019-08-20On March 31, 2019 I fell from a ladder and fractured my spine in three places. While I was in the Emergency Room, I was unsure if I would walk again, or if I would ever be able to move around and play with my young children. Dr. Nathaniel Tindel reviewed my x-rays and gave me the best news ever....He assured me that he would be able to repair my spine, and that in time I could be as good as new. After my surgery, I returned to work and continued life as it had been before. Dr. Tindel is an excellent surgeon andcaring professional. I highly recommend him, as you will not find a more skilled and attentive physician.

2021-01-15I started my search for a Spine Surgeon by finding the most qualified I could on paper and then we interviewed each other. I cannot even begin to tell you how fortunate I am to have met Dr. Tindel recommended to me by my Physiatrist. I kid you not, Dr. Tindel spent over an hour with me the first time we met, first by listening, then examination, only then followed by reading the MRI to confirm his opinion. Dr. Tindel then thoroughly educated me in laymens terms as to the cause and effect of my condition as well as sharing the prognoses, clearly explaining what the surgery will do, making sure to explain that does not guarantee that the symptoms would go away at a specific time if at all, but I was well informed and educated by an individual that clearly cares. I am an extremely active 60 year old that went to Dr. Tindel sharing the desire to get me back on the ice playing hockey, skiing, rowing and just enjoying everyday hikes. I had herniated my L5/S1 disc and although remained active I had started getting paralysis of my left foot along with hamstring and calf issues. I went through the proper protocol of PT, anti-inflammatory, both block and epidural injections before being told to seek the opinion of a surgeon. Yesterday I was happy to share with Dr. Tindel at my 10 week follow up that I have walked over 150 miles, swam over 30 miles and most recently since the six week mark started to circuit train again and row. If not for Covid I would have started playing hockey again in my mens league as well. Thank you for everything Dr. Tindel, I have regained the strength I had lost and have been pain free literally from the days immediately following the surgery. Dr. Tindel has an amazing staff as well, from Annie up front to Naomi helping with the insurance process in the back. Five Stars is not enough and a Simple Thank You is not enough!

2021-01-29I strongly recommend Dr Tindel. I had a badly ruptured disc and significant spinal stenosis. As a result, walking more than a few blocks was really difficult - and painful. Dr Tindel performed surgery in 2013. That proved to be the best health decision Ive ever made. Recovery was quick. I was walking a mile a couple days later. And I have been running, playing tennis etc and my back has not been an impediment. I no longer have back pain. My experience has been life changing. Dr. Tindel and his staff gave me all the time i needed throughout the process leading up to the surgery and afterwards. They were a pleasure to deal with. I write this review because i am very grateful to them. My highest recommendation.

2017-08-14Dr. Tindel did a cervical spinal fusion surgery on my neck and installed custom metal plate to cover C 3-5. He cleaned up my spinal canal from arthritis and bone spurs that caused bad pain in my shoulder....and yeah, he did all this through 2 inch incision in my neck??? I was able to move my head right after the surgery, and removed the band aid from my neck next day. I was on Tylenol on day 3 and got back to work after 10 days. I am extremely relieved after my surgery and post op results are great, to be honest it was not a big deal (or as bad as it sounds), again because you are in the hands of very experienced professional.Dr. Tindel is amazing and very skilled surgeon, in addition he is pleasure to be around and speak to. Very intelligent, upfront and extremely nice. His assistant Anne is a sweetheart. I highly recommend Dr. Tindel!!!

2020-09-06I whole heartedly recommend Dr Nathaniel Tindel for anyone needing back surgery. He is not only a fantastic surgeon, but he is also an amazing and caring person. No matter what day and the time of day, he is always available to return your call. I had a surgery for my back by another surgeon a year before Dr Tindell’s surgery. The first was a complete disaster and made my back pain worse. Dr Tindell not only needed to fix my lower back issues, but he also had to correct the mistakes made by the previous surgeon. The nature of my surgery created a great deal of pain afterwards. He worked very hard and gave me all the attention I needed so that he could come up with the right combination of pain medications. He was also very careful so that my body would not become addicted to them. I will be forever thankful to him that I am now pain free and restriction free after living for two and half years with excruciating pain. I was even able to spend an entire day with my kids riding roller coasters at Great Adventure. Before Dr Tindell, this was something I was told that I will never be able to do anymore. I hope that whoever reads this finds it helpful in finding the perfect surgeon for his/her back issues.
