New York Sports Clubs - Midtown in other cities:
Lots of new machines installed this week and the bathrooms recently upgraded. Local staff are great. Can get packed between 6pm and 7pm but most other times fine. However, they lose a star for the way they handled the upgrade to the bathrooms. Corporate treated members like chopped meat. The start of the process was a shambles with members turning up to find no showers that day. Nothing posted online. Sometimes showers were closed at 8am with zero notice so you turn up to the gym, get sweaty and then cant take a shower. Calls to corporate not answered or returned. No discount to fees, no apologies, we just had to deal with no showers half the week for 3 months. Finally, I hear they can be painful to leave so be careful.
Received a voicemail from the general manager named Anesha claiming she sent me an email about rejoining and waiving the 99 fee to join but she never sent me an email. I tried to call 3 times no one answered and the phone would hang up on me! I was actually interested in rejoining the but I’m going to take this as a sign not to!!!EDIT: Decided to give them a chance and rejoin after the manager Maryanne reached out to me after I wrote my review, but just as fast as I signed up I canceled! I was charged more than what I paid the first time I was a member; which was not told to me when I was on the phone with Maryanne. I tried to reach out to her to discuss the payment and she never responded. I sent emails to the manager and left messages with reps to have her call me back but no reply. Bad customer service!!! Won’t make the mistake of joining again!!! Don’t waste your time, find another gym!!!!
The place has a good selection of equipment however its filthy. I have seen the staff vacuum but I still see a lot of dust on the gym floor. The mens locker room is not ventilated enough. At times it smells like foot odor. It can also get really hot in there. Why put carpeting in the locker room? Tile is much easier to clean.A year later and they are updating the locker rooms. I understand this is necessary but they alternate access to the showers every day by gender. So women can get to the showers 1 day then men the next. Its been over a month now so lets see how much longer it is.The cleaning crew is hard working, I see them in there all the time but they need additional help. They have 2 people during the day, 1 more person would be a pretty big impact on cleanliness. `
This gym is just ok. If you work a few blocks from here or it’s convenient to your commute it serves it’s purpose. That said the equipment here is not in terrific shape. The men’s locker room is cramped and over crowded. The bathroom situation is a mess. Not all of the showers always work well. The bathroom area is generally in bad shape and suffering from deferred maintenance. If you come at peak times this gym is often out of towels.
Great gym here in Midtown off of Park Ave. There is a really large aerobic equipment area on the third floor which is never really packed. The weight room is smaller than youd expect but ive never seen it too crowded here where I couldnt get the workout I wanted done. Staff here are always friendly and helpful. Just one point to note, they only have a small sauna and no steam room here. This is my regular weekend gym.
A lot of weight lifting machines, cardio, dumbbells and kettlebells. Everything you need! Highly recommend individual training sessions with Leon. He is highly professional. Each session I learn a lot! I could feel a difference after the first workout following his program. After a month I can see significant progress.
I come in to town every now and then for business and try to maintain my fitness regime. Every time I’ve been here, I’ve been greeted politely by the person at the front desk when I first come in. I generally purchase a week pass for the time I’m in town. This location has everything I need (free weights user) for my program.Pros: Staff has been friendly to me (as a visitor and not full time member) every time I’ve been here. The variety of equipment is great and they seem to have everything I need for my basic strength program as well as space for the HIIT elements of my program.Employees are helpful in pointing me to equipment I need (again I’m a visitor and not a full time member and cant find equipment sometimes). While I don’t use the aerobics room or the spin room, they seem nice compared to most places I’ve visited.Cons: many plates don’t match in the free weight area. It seems as though there are bumpers of several brands, and octagonal iron plates (personal preference is to avoid the Octagonals). This makes it a challenge to match plates on the bar during crowded times. (Sorry, my bar must be symmetrical at all times). Also, there are a variety of bars from 28.5mm to some 32mm power bars. My personal preference is the 28mm IWF marked bar for Olympic Lifting and 28.5 dual marked IWF and IPF for everything else. While this isn’t a big deal, it makes getting my favorite bar during busy times a challenge. Again, personal preference... The fact that they have bars in many sizes is great for those that know the difference.Smaller plates (5’s and 2.5’s) and Dumbbells can be tough to find as the members are sloppy about putting plates and Dumbbells away. DB’s are often on the opposite side of the gym. Some of the equipment jiggles a bit and could use a touch of tightening all around.Locker rooms have been under construction and steam room hasn’t been accessible. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.Overall, I’m a satisfied occasional user of this club and fully intend on visiting whenever I’m in town.
My boyfriend and I visited NYC for a few days, and this place was so welcoming and gave us great hospitality. The lady at the front desk and the fitness manager were both great, and the gym is a great facility to train at. A ton of space, a strength & conditioning area with a variety of equipment, and very clean locker area. We will be coming back here next year!
Absolutely crooked business and the manager Thomas Crockett, is a crook.I was charged in April for my membership while the gym was closed during the pandemic. I received no information about when there would be a refund. After trying to call over and over I had to reach out to my credit card company to handle the transaction. Then when they finally open, I try to cancel my membership and they tell me I need to give 45 days notice. How was I supposed to do that exactly? I will NEVER be a customer at NYSC ever again and it is solely because of Thomas Crockett.
I have been a member for many years They have been very careful during COVID, cleaning non stop, ensuring that machines are separated, members have access to wipes etc all over the gym Staff is professional, friendly and always helpful Look no further this is the best gym
In the past this NYSC location was not as well maintained as it is now. Because of Covid, everyone working there is conscientious about wearing masks and telling members to cover their noses as well as their mouths. There is an abundance of cleaning supplies available and the members are fairly conscientious about wiping the machines before & after using them.I am impressed. My only complaint is the grunters who drop heavy weights on the floor — I guess trying to impress ...??? It doesn’t work—they just seem selfish & stupid.
One of the more better facilities in the city that is not considered their corporate or flagship location. This place has added a free squat rack and deadlifting platforms. Great selection of weights and bumper plates. The TRX area is spacious and has the right amount of equipment. Only complaint is the ceiling in the locker rooms but you only spend 20 mins at the most in there.Great location overall!
Just started working nearby. came by one day after work to inquire about the gym. Told them I wanted to check it out. They told me I have to wait around. I didnt mind the wait but they didnt really seem to care since theyre have enough members. So I just turned around and walked back out. After reading the other poor reviews, I think I made the right decision.
Not worth it. I have a friend who goes her and she has been harassed by another customer for a year and even though she has gone to the director they won’t do anything about it. Apparently just her word isn’t enough for them to act...women need to be able to feel safe and comfortable when they are at the gym. She ended up recording her conversation with the director, but I think it’s only fair to warn other women who are thinking of joining.
Facility and equipment maintenance seem to be very challenging for NYSC to properly manage in my general experience and this location is no exception. The showers were broken, steam room smelt like a dirty fish tank, the locker room is filthy and they need to clean the equipment and throw a fresh coat of paint on the walls.
Good quality equipment all on 1 floor. A wide range of cardio machines along with free weights and isolate machines.General not super busy after work except for cardio machines. One of the NYSC locations I prefer to use.Mens locker room could be kept a little cleaner .
Don’t come here if you want to shower. Been coming in morning for months before work and last few weeks close down a locker room with no notice. Second time it happens I asked, claimed they emailed everyone (they didn’t) and then tell me this will be going on for unknown amount of time. So again, don’t come if need to shower after you work out
Price is okay compared to the rest of the sport centrums nearby. You can use their towels. I only gave 3 stars, because I came to do an indoor rowing training. Of the three rowing machines only one was working as it should. Even with the last one I had my doubts if it displayed the correct pace, time and distance.
Attention to anyone that is a member, or was considering NYSC. This post is to tell you my experience, and to help inform your decision. Feel free to share, to spare anyone else having to deal with this company.I will just start by saying I do not have a signed contract with NYSC, Ive never worked out there, and somehow they billed me over ~$1,000. I have been going back and forth with NYSC for over 6 months (what a headache.) This place is a complete scam and is an example of a company that just doesnt know how to do the right thing and doesnt understand the value/cost of having integrity. I have never had such horrible customer service from Management. I had one manager approve the refund (Very shady way - saying he had to do it in 3 installments over 3 months). But he apparently got fired. After over a month of trying to get the contact information for a decision maker, I get the Area Sales Manager and he is even worst. He is unresponsive, he sees that I do not have a contract and says that I need to have proof that I talked to the GM prior to 6/19. Why? I couldnt tell you but I definitely have a call log that says such. I sent it and he completely ignored it and wont respond to anything. This is absolutely mind blowing. Had they just done the right thing in the first place, I might have positive associations with their brand, refer them and even sign a contract when I was ready to sign up for a gym. Instead, they are forever corrupt, shady and a company that I will never set foot in and never recommend
Trainers are annoying and disrespectful and the management just doesnt care. They dont let anyone to the trx area, even when they dont have clients. Which is especially annoying at peak hours when the place is packed. If it wasnt enough, they play their music very loud, and they sometimes play football. If anyone tries to use the area, all they say is i need this space. Literally. No excuse Me, please, etc. And the management just doesnt care.Otherwise the place would be okay. Its big, machines are standard and in good conditions , there are two stretching areas.
On Saturday, April 23, 2016, I experienced something very unusual at NYSC. Ive been a member at NYSC for over 5 plus years and i never had an employee be rude or displeasing, when trying to provide customer service. I had another member drop off a tiny bag off at the gym before I arrived for my work out. I arrived at the gym and explained to the front desk employee( female with braids in her hair) that a member dropped something off for me. Immediately, she said why, thats not customary! I stated, Well, I called prior and was advised that it was ok. She then said well its not here, without getting up from her seat and continued to fold towels. ( The whole time giving an attitude) I said how do you know? Her response, I havent seen anything. She then continued to ask questions regarding the contents of my bag with an attitude. I felt it was a little intrusive! !I explained to her that it was a Duane Reade bag with a bottle of pills. She continued to inquire the contents of the bag and what was in the bottle. I told her it was work out pills. In my head, I asked myself, why these questions. She said, she hadn’t seen anything. She again did not move and said you can look over there if you want but like I said, there is nothing here. Throughout the whole conversation, the employee had an attitude. I did not make anything of it then because I didn’t want to jump to conclusions that she had an attitude. I called my friend (also a member of NYSC) and made sure he dropped it off. I told the employee again, he said he dropped off here to a male staff with tattoos. The employee looked at me and said, like I said earlier, there is nothing here. My friend on the phone said, why the attitude. Where is the customer service! That’s when I responded and asked her, why is there need for an attitude. She doesn’t own the gym, and it’s a member dropping something off for me. I also mentioned what is the purpose for the 20 questions. I told you a Duane Reade bag was dropped off and it had my name on it. There’s no need to know anything else because the contents are not important. She went on to state that she did not have an attitude. I explained to her she did not even get up to assist me or even look. I asked her for her name and she refused to provide me with the info and covered her name tag with her hair I asked her for the corporate email that would allow me to make a complaint. She said she does not know that information. The whole experience was ridiculous, since the initial point of conversation there was an attitude. She did not promote one of the company’s core values which is customer service. She failed to assist a member who was simply trying to pick up a small bag that was left by another member. Then to even proceed with the childish behavior she proceeded to not provide her information and covering her name tag with her. Then say, her name is not important at this point. She did not want to give information to call cooperate and make a complaint. I am just baffled at the lack of customer service, the package is not important, my concern is the fact that she is the first person to encounter members and be the face of NYSC at that location.
3 because I love this location. 3 because its overcrowded... even at 3:13pm on a Tuesday, literally just took a seat up front bc 5 exercises I wanted to do are occupied. Im flexible with my workouts, but Jesus Christ nothing worse than finishing a pre-workout and having to bench it bc you feel dumb standing around/waiting so long.
I primarily lift (free weights) or use the studio for dance practice, so take my reviews from that perspectivePros:Lots of free studio time after workBasically empty after 9pm during the week and any time on the weekendsReally good price using student discount (45/month)Kind staff, when signing up they were upfront about the 45 day lead before cancellationEverything I need in one spot-- studio with mirrors and wooden floor, squat/bench/power racks, ample stretching space, plenty of machines tooCons:Locker room is clean but smells kinda funkyCloses earlier than Id preferDumbells and plates are always all over the placeOnly 1 power cage, 1 squat rack, and 2 benches... Definitely will have to restructure your workout or wait for at least one rack pretty oftenOverall really good and convenient spot, not above and beyond but exactly what I was looking for
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY closing all the STEAMROOM AND SAUNA at almost any location?? and why the membership still so expensive and so many miss communication saying emails was sent about this and that but there is no email???????, I hope I could get a answer on that, because out there are so many gyms way cheap, the reason I sign up at NYSC IS BECAUSE THEY OFFER SAUNA, STEAMROOM BUT THEY ARE CLOSING THOSE OPTIONS, ANY UPDATE ON WHY AND IF WILL BE REOPENED AGAIN OR NOT.THANK YOU
Second best in the city behind 34th/park. this gym has everything you need and all on one floor which is a huge PLUS with nysc gyms. New layout. Overhauled some used machines. Giving it a 5 now. There are 4 excellent nysc. 51/lex(this one), 34/park, 59/park, 47/broadway.
Really disappointed. I saw the one day sale. The Staff wasnt helpful ask question. They told me it was over but sign was still outside. I ask a questions. It was short and rude. I ask can I have a tour. They told me I can walk around by myself. They didnt offer to help me at all. Never will go back there.

2022-02-15I train with Kevin Wang at the NYSC on 45th and Lexington. Ive trained with Kevin for a while now and he is the most dedicated and disciplined trainer. He works with me on my fitness goals and keeps me motivated. He also makes me feel like I am a priority to him and not just a dollar sign when he trains me. On numerous occasions, he has rearranged his schedule to meet my needs and has made me feel more confident about working out. He absolutely has my individual interests at heart and keeps me focused to stay on track. He is the main reason Ive continued on with NYSC. His passion for health and fitness is an inspiration to me and I would highly recommend him as a personal trainer to anyone who is looking. The 45th and Lexington facilities are great and besides the space looking brand new, there seems to be a lot of new equipment there, too. Its a very clean environment and the staff is extremely helpful, friendly and courteous.

2020-03-12If you’re serious about fitness look elsewhere. There is no signage designating areas as “personal training only” yet some of their trainers will interrupt you and ask you to move despite you being in the area long before them and there being plenty of other spots for them to do their routine with a client. The layout of the new equipment is especially odd, some areas are cramped and others are just unused open space. They didn’t replace the leg extension machine which is sort of a must have, nobody can seem to advise when they (or if they) will be getting one.95% of the time this place is so disorganized it isn’t even funny. Plates and free weights are left everywhere. If you need weights under 30lb you probably are going to have to hunt for them. Patrons fail to return weights to their areas and there doesn’t seem to be any dedicated process by the gym to organize things. Half the time the personal trainers are just as guilty of not returning things. On top of that you may see towels, water bottles or coffee cups left laying around. You will return to see it still sitting there for several days back to back. Herds of dustBunnies roam this gym everywhere you look, it’s pretty obvious they don’t do a very deep clean of this place often. The posted pictures were taken on different visits to the gym during non-peak hours so there isn’t much reason for the mess.

2019-04-08Apart from it being terribly disgusting in the bathrooms, I still come to work out but just don’t have the privilege of taking a shower. I can’t even leave my bike downstairs while I work out. The gentle men at the desk said it was a “fire hazard” attached is a picture to show how little my “metal” bike has to effect people in anyway, yet people with strollers leave it in the same place all the time in the middle of the path way. Certain rules just don’t make any sense, if you won’t clean the bathrooms at least come up with a better reason as to why I can’t bring my bike to the gym. It’s a fitness center shouldn’t they be encouraging you to either run or cycle to the gym ?? Doesn’t make any sense. There is enough space to park a car in this hallway. Yet it’s a fire hazard. 🙃

2021-11-22Well, lets keep it simple. I signed up 3 months before covid hit. Once covid hit, the gyms were closed. Not their fault. They didnt let me cancel my membership over the phone or over email. Today I see they charged my card again but when I go on google maps to check if they are open, the gym I signed up for does no longer show up on google maps. I call their phone number from a sister gym nearby and they ask me to go on their website for help. Well, I am happy to take down this review if you fix this problem so your other clients wont have to waste their time going through this process.

2021-11-20They are trying… but definitely not like 51st and Lex. They had 4 smith machines there vs 2 here where people can do squats. The 2 seems like it’s always being taken during rush hours. Also there was an area on 51st where you can do deadlifts… maybe set an area where we can do deadlifts instead of taking up one of the smith machines. I feel there’s area of improvements… but the staff is great as always :)

2021-11-11NYSC made a huge mistake closing the 51st & Lexington location and opening this one. The interior is severely outdated. It feels like you’re stepping back in time (or into your grandpa’s basement). The locker rooms are dirty with old broken wooden cabinets for locker doors. The layout and placement of equipment is sporadic and unclear. The pool isn’t even open for another month or two… I would not recommend this gym.

2021-05-19Convenient location, great layout and equipment. My gym to go to. Just wish management will take actions on turning that AC on because it wont be long before someone collapse due to overheating. Mind you, we still have to wear a mask as per Gym policy. I do understand times are tough and Covid has hit our economy badly; but we are still being charged the same amount of money monthly. it seems to me, and to many friends I have talked to, that Manager wants to save money not only from the not longer given towels, but also from the electricity bill.Hoping the matter can be fixed soon. Best regards, Pablo.

2022-04-02Small, compact spaces. Waiting for the pool restoration and reopening of pool in early May, supposedly!
