Overall a fairly mediocre gym. Weights are very disorganized, stuff is falling apart, and mostly dirty. Really, changes needed are quite simple:1) First and foremost, they clearly under-hire staff. There simply arent enough people to be out on the floor, man the front desk, and maintain an orderly gym environment.2) As mentioned free weights are always disorganized--the fault of users, sure, but the racks arent labelled --- this is the worst with the dumbbells, and so easily fixed.3) The deadlift platform is always falling apart, and is quite dangerous4) Other stuff just has no place. For example, theres a hex bar thats sort of thrown wherever on the floor because it has no area. Weights for the benches and squat racks and other machines that use them dont have enough racks to put them on, so people just dont unrack.5) The locker room smells like an old sock.6) Not about the gym itself, but charges to my account are erratic and sometimes dont add up.I think with just a few more staff on hand and a manager who thought about this stuff this would be a very good gym, but as is is mostly a neutral or negative user experience. Also note, Ive emailed customer support as theyve suggested and never get a response. Once about these changes and once about my account being overcharged.
This gym is awesome. The mood here is always right for focusing on exercising. I feel the customers and employees have the right mind set for the most part. A positive mindset. And I feel it keeps others in check. That positive energy pushes you to do that extra set you don’t feel like doing. I don’t have one of their personal trainers, but they seem really good at their jobs, all the time. Their energy has always made me feel better and helped me push a little harder. Yes, some of the equipment might seem old, used, and some of the facilities might seem inadequate, but they always have the weight stations in working order, working lockers, plenty of group programs, and plenty of workout stations including calisthenics. Not giving 5 stars is only because the gym is not “perfect” for me. There are times when the weight scale isn’t working, I’m not crazy about the shower stations, and the workers seem too stressed sometimes about opening more accounts (I blame the company, not the workers). That being said, this gym is still awesome.
I think a class action lawsuit is definitely needed as Town Sports did not get message from members before Pandemic with shady actions and other suits filed but now I see I got charged for a membership I CANCELED before closing due to Covid. My account wasn’t frozen, it was canceled and I didn’t receive any charges after cancellation like others did, so I know for sure it was finished. I had signed paperwork and canceled two memberships due to their shady actions of this organization. Now I get charged and I cannot get anyone on phone to assist me and will have to go there in person. I’m sure it is against law to charge people credit cards AFTER canceled memberships. We as consumers need to take stand and action! I see many of same comments all over social media of charges for services not authorized and for clubs not even open. I feel like they are filing bankruptcy and plan on hitting all the members for more money since they are “broke”. Also, particular club I am speaking of is in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
A star is way too much for this gym. The Gym equipment is okay. They used to have better employees,. Now they are always either on their phone or talking to each other and you have to wait till they notice you to scan your card. Another important thing that you need to know is that they will continue charging you even after you already have cancel your membership with the club or the membership with a personal trainer. And forget about the manager, he will NEVER SOLVE ANYTHING!!!
My experience overall was terrible! I went to the manager to register for the membership w/ 5 other family members and was told that I cannot register w/ cash payment. The manager informed me that they only accepted CC or Debit cards, absolutely no cash, so I accepted to pay with my CC. I asked him if they save CC info on their system and they said no. After, I started going to the gym for 5 days in a row I stopped b/c I did not like the gym at all. The following month, they charged me again for all my 5 family members excluding myself without my permission when they told me that they will not save any CC info. Overall, they could have called me and told me that they will charge me for my 5 family members the following but the manager never informed me anything!! I received my bank statement and realized that they have been charging me for myself and my 5 family members. Immediately, I called to speak to the manager so that he can give me a full explanation on why he did that and was transferred to 3 different persons with NO explanation and NO MANAGER whats so ever. So when I called my bank to dispute the charges, the bank told me I wasnt allowed to because the manager from the gym (who spoke Spanish) gave me a documentation to fill out my contact information and address which I was confused why I had to do that SO i asked the manager if this was a contract form and he said it wasnt and that it was just a form to collect your information with NO signature. My bank contacted someone from the gym and informed my bank that what I did was sign a contract which I never did!!!! Thats why I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS GYM TO ANYONE B/C ITS SO UNSECURED!! I wish I can give 0 stars instead of 1.
NYSC is just a terrible company. The employees are professional and courteous at this location but theres nothing they can do to make worth dealing with this company worth while.Theres a reason theyve been sued by the NY AG, and its own members dozens of times in 2020.When they reopened post COVID they charged all members before we had a chance to go to the club to cancel membership (they make it virtually impossible to cancel membership remotely, even while locations were closed), they then charged all members for a full month the morning they reopened. Went immediately to cancel my membership and was charged an additional 10 dollars for cancellation.Just... Go somewhere else. Dont punish yourself by going here.
This is a completely disgraceful place. The customer service is subpar, they will pull money out of your account even after you have confirmed that your subscription is cancelled, and they will lie about your account status to your credit card company once you file a dispute. Happy to provide documentation of how NYSC South Slope has screwed me over the past three years if needed. I would be wary of walking into this gym and signing up for a membership. There are plenty of other options in the neighborhood. Of course, most of the gym employees and personal trainers are decent, courteous people, but the management is horrendous and acting in bad faith, and nothing has been done over the past two years to address these concerns.
At first it seems like an ok no frills gym that should get the job done. But once you join you quickly realize that its really pretty bad. Half the treadmills dont work or the TVs connected to them are broken, the weight machines are old and the customer service after you sign up is poor. I only lasted a couple months before I switched over to Crunch which I have liked a lot better. I should also mention that they hit me with some sneaky fees when I tried to leave.
This gym is well below average, the dumbbells and weight equipment needs to be replaced with new things. The weight area is always a disarray, the water fountain has been pouring hot boiling water for over a year now, in the winter time the ac is on! The cardio equipment is 75% not working and the turf area has trainers constantly blocking the way for members, there should be a time limit for trainers in that area.Forget about the locker room, that is disgusting, this is where the gym looses its stars. The lockers are hanging by one nail, they smell like feet and the toilets are always dirty and broken. The shower curtains need to be taken off and replaced with glass, the floors are always wet and filled with unknown substance. Lastly the sauna never works, I never go to the steam room as it smells as soon as I open the door!
Customer service is just really, really poor, consistently now for years. You’re told one thing and it never ends up being the truth, then you’re rudely told that the changes come down from above. My fiancé and I both have a story every week we tell each other revolving around poor customer service at the gym (we go at separate times). But, it’s cheap enough and is laid out well and less like a maze (YMCA across the street is a bit much for me).I have also been double charged for things, told I would get refunds but never did, and am generally treated with complete and utter disdain by 99% of the staff here.
I joined this gym on the 31 of August and decided to cancel my membership 4-5 day later out of the 9 they gave me because it was really going out of my way. Can someone tell me why Im being charged still when I call they said oh this it going to take ten days for the refund, its been thirteen and no refund and they took another payment out again. when I call theres no answer. People for your own good stay away from this place
I wanted to recognize Hernan who works at the front desk.I have been to numerous clubs and he is by far the most diligent nysc staff I have seen. He does everything you would want in a staff member at the front- extremely affable, professional and caring, but it’s more than this. He takes pride in your facility and since you are without a manager, he has taken over responsibilities that clearly is going above and beyond. Hes managing the front, while also coming in early to clean up the locker room, since there wasnt a cleaning crew. This to me is incredible. Plus numerous other examples. PLEASE consider him as a leading candidate as a manager of your club since I have spoken to numerous members and staff, and we all agree he would be a great fit and would like the see the club invest in a talented resource we see in him and become a permanent fixture for the club.
As far as NYSC gyms go, this one is very good. Has everything you need regardless of your fitness level. Its one of the cleaner NYSCs I have been to. Staff is friendly and helpful. One time I forgot my lock and they let me borrow one for my locker. I was willing to pay but they insisted I borrow. At times it can be hard to get the equipment you want, some of the treadmills need work but most of them are working condition.
I have been a very loyal NYSC member for nearly seven years, so much so that I was willing to overlook minor problems with this club (like a severe lack of working air conditioning or fans in the spinning room, some instructors that are downright awful but still get prime classes, and a cross-fit area that has taken over nearly half of the weights/cardio location) and the fact that I was still paying WAY MORE than the new $20 a month pricing thats en vogue. It was a nice enough club for my needs and I liked the flexibility of being able to take classes/use facilities all over the city. The one-star rating (lower if Google would allow me), comes from when I dared try to quit. I know quitting a gym is always an ordeal: but this location has been downright deceptive. To be clear: I quit because I moved and there was no longer a NYSC location within 30 minutes (each way) of my new house. I tried for months, but spending an hour commuting to the gym was not realistic for my schedule (and I work from home so its not like I could use a location close to my office). So I reached out to the club and was told I needed to email my request and proof of new address to the manager. Done....nearly two weeks go by with no response to repeated emails and voicemails. Finally, when I threaten to have my credit card refuse payment, I get a response and am told they cant find my account. So I send my barcode/ID number from my membership tag. Days go by before Im told I could just freeze my membership (for a monthly fee of course). I again, request that my membership be cancelled. I then start to receive voicemails from the clubs manager (I now assume this started because she didnt want to leave a paper trail). Via voicemail, she tells me that the account has been cancelled, but I will be charged a final 30 days because Im required to give that much notice. This was at the end of July, so when a charge came through in August, I thought nothing of it.Then, I look at my credit card statement for September. Low and behold, NYSC has charged me my full monthly membership fee for September! When I try to call the club, it takes three attempts to get ANYONE on the phone...and Im told theres no manager in right now (at 10am on a Tuesday). Truly mind-blowing. Is it really worth if for an extra $75 (which I fully intend on having my credit card company refuse payment on)? BEWARE - the club is nowhere near nice enough to warrant this behavior.
For the past year, this place keeps charging me for a cancelled acount, seemingly at random as the charges change each month. Each month I call and scream and they assure me the problem is fixed. And each month I get a new charge. I dont know how to fix this problem so I now am forced to cancel my debit card which is such a night mare to do. They commit fraud. Period. I attempted to report them to the Better Business Bureau but theyre not even registered. Shut this place down and go to the YMCA up the street.
This is the worse managed NYSC in all of NYC. Management is never there and no one seems to care about maintaining a standard of excellence at this facility. Bathrooms are filthy, Showers often have no shampoo, Equipment is poorly maintained, e.g., there has been a Stairmaster that has been out of service for about 2 months and they just dont fix it. Their treadmills need desperate maintenance as they often howl and make strange sounds but yet none of the workers care enough to report it. I hate the experience of going there but since I live close to it I go on the weekends and I always walk out hating the experience. The ones in city have a different class of management that seem to take more pride in maintaining a better standard. I can go on but getting annoyed at just even writing this review so I need to stop. I think they should all be fired and replaced with a new and more competent staff.
I didn’t even get a chance to come in yet I’m new to the area I just wanted to try out the local gyms but the sales people are way too aggressive and called me multiple times and left voicemails within one hour. I blocked the number. I’m like so turned off by this alone I don’t even want to give the gym a chance.
Management is poor and make it impossible for members to get help without feeling like they are being swindled. Good luck if you have a question about your membership, every employee has a different answer if youre able to get in contact with someone willing to talk in the first place.
Zero Stars to this location and NYSC in general. I went there back in July to look at the place, made it very clear I am not ready to commit, was offered a guest pass and they said they need my card on file but I wont be charged until I say Im ready to actually become a member.Their employee, it turns out, singed me up for membership - made up an address I live, misspelled my name, I obviously never signed a contract but hey, it doesnt matter to them. They start charging me right away, manager is nearly impossible to reach, took few months to cancel the membership I never used because it turns out Im supposed to prove that I never agreed to it. That employee doesnt work there anymore, they wont give refund or any type of semblance of decent (forget excellent) customer service. The fact that they dont have my correct address or name, I dont have a contract or even a key card - dont make a difference to them. Manager says its not up to her to give refunds and corporate says its not up to them. I ended up $135 out for going to check out the place and never even getting a card to actually use the facilities.Under any circumstances, DO NOT go there and if you do, DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR CARD!!!!
These criminals got my creditcard and kept deducting money from my bank. They told me they will refund it, and that it was a mistake, but now they wont pick up the phone or answer my emails. Its been over 3 months, and now I just gave up, because this is giving me a lot of bad energy. Just wanted to warn other people, please find another gym! Highly unsatisfied customer here!In total they owe me over $285 dollar.
You definitely get what you pay for with this gym and its just a shame because it could be so much more for no additional cost on behalf of NYSC. What kind of establishment employs people that do not even say hello or goodbye when you enter or leave?? The types of lazies that are too busy texting on their phone sitting down to even greet you. When I worked part time as a teenager, I still had the decency to say hello to a paying customer. It costs nothing.. Only one female employee in the evening during the week does this. Its just awful. Management never seems to be around in this place. Equipment can be broken for weeks. There is a constant assortment of litter in the stairwell and on floors. The mens locker room smells like a petri dish of mold combined with wet dog. There is caked dirt on the cardio machines. The cycling machines never really work. I could go on and on. This is Park Slope. Its not inner Detroit. Get your act together NYSC Park Slope. Its really a shame.
Spacious locker room. Weights area is typical for the chain. Two squat racks which is a big plus. Main concern is the cardio equipment - today all of their upright stationary bikes (including two spinning bikes) were unusable. Update: two days later bikes are still not functional. Update 2: its been 6 weeks and they still havent fixed the only water fountain with a bottle filler. Downgraded to one star
Clean spot with people who are all there for the same reason. No Olympic weight lifters, which makes the average Joe feel a little more comfortable. Staff is nice and machine are all working most of the time. Beware of the leg lifting guy! You will know who he is if you see him.
I’ve been charged twice for a membership that I never signed up for or authorized. NYSC Park Slope, 324 9th Street, Brooklyn NY and its management (Wanda Dryer and Darrell Dorsey) are a disgrace and should be avoided at all costs.Heres what happened:I was visiting town this summer and purchased a day pass. I’m guessing that one of the staff at NYSC Park Slope took my card and signed me up for a trial membership without my knowledge, authorization or consent.Upon returning on a separate occasion to buy a day pass, the person at the desk told me that I was signed up for a “trial membership.”Needless to say, I was SHOCKED. I told him that this was never authorized, and to please cancel it. I was assured that it was a mistake, and that I would never be charged. To start a paper trail, I got an invoice #32584284 on August 12th, 2017 that states that the membership was cancelled, the balance is $0 and that I would not be charged. However, on September 5th, 2017, I was outraged to discover I was charged $24.99.I called NYSC Park Slope -- and for a second time -- was told it would be taken care of. I would not be charged again. To be extra careful, I requested another piece of paper saying that the membership was cancelled and that I would never be charged I again.I received another invoice #33427088 on September 10th saying that the membership was cancelled – again.11 days later, on September 16th, 2017, I was charged $59.99 for a membership that I never knew about, authorized, or gave my consent to.I called NYSC Park Slope again, and Justin answered the phone. I asked to speak with a manager, and he said that Wanda would be in later, but that I could call back. When I asked him to have her call me back, he refused. He said that he “could take my number, but can’t make any promises.”I’ve emailed Wanda and Darrell to say that I never signed up for a membership; unfortunately, Ive never received a call, apology or refund.Heres the bottom line:I’ve been charged $84.98 for a membership that I never knew about or authorized – and that I’ve asked to be cancelled time and time again.Wanda Dryer and Darrell Dorsey are either extraordinarily dishonest or egregiously incompetent, and anything under their stewardship should be avoided at all costs. If I can save you from making the costly mistake, aggravation and stress of walking through the doors of NYSC Park Slope, then this review will have been worth it. Go to Crunch, Harbor Fitness or Body Reserve in Park Slope instead -- youll be glad you did.
This place was very nice one year ago, but now the bathrooms are terrible dirty, showers, steam room is not working since 3 months ago, the machines are destroyed and the most awful thing is that, I canceled my membership last month and they charged me 3 more time, they did the same when my husband canceled his membership. This company are the worst!!!
Totally love the atmosphere!! Allows one to concentrate on your goals privately or in a group...have cycling and silver sneakers program for seniors and those with disabilities..I applaud that everyone has access to exercising...great steam room, sauna and locker room
These comments suggest a pattern of fraud. CCs charged after cancellation and signing people up for unwanted services is criminal behavior. If this happened to you, report it to the New York Attorney General. Consumer Fraud division. Who knows if its isolated to this gym or a company-wide conspiracy? Let the law men and women handle it. In any case they can help you get your stolen money back.
I go to this gym for the last few months. I went as usual today and left my personal belongings in the small lockers (cabinets which you can lock with your own lock) which are outside the mens locker room, which is where I leave my belongings for the last few months. After my work out, I found my belongings missing and I approached the front desk. The person who took away my belongings said the lockers I used are day lockers.I told her there are no such signs & I asked her to walk with me to the day locker area and show me where the said signs are --- she couldnt find any!!You cannot really create rules on the whim and confiscate peoples belongings! If there are said rules, they should be posted! Like I said -- there are no such rules posted anywhere! I have pictures to prove this ( I took pictures since this is all outside the mens locker room in the hallway).I got my belongings and a $2 lock with anyone can break in-place of my expensive number lock.
They are awful. Three months after cancelling my membership I still got charged. Went there twice to see a manager that was nowhere to be found, then over the phone they kept sending me to voicemail. I was reimbursed from my bank not from these thieves, and put a stop on all future transactions.
The place really deserves a 2 but they have finally shown belated signs of improving. Machines are broken or missing pieces for overly long periods of time. The place is dirty and patrons don’t seem to care where they leave their stuff, talk on their phones, loudly to each other, etc. it’s basically a mess. But a few employees like Solomon give us hope that at least a few of the people in charge care. Give THAT guy a raise.
My wife canceled her membership 7 months ago New York sports club continued to bill us we spoke with managers every month to no avail we had to call our bank and put a stop to New York sports club otherwise we would still be getting billed...we were over billed for around $220 +
My girlfriend and I love this NYSC. Everyone leaves you alone to get your sweat on. The place is clean we can always find the equipment we like, only downside, if equipment is broke it can take over a week but no more than two before its up and running again. This isnt the only NYSC Ive found this to be true at.
Unknowledgeable staff with conflicting information, especially if you are calling to find out about special promotions/training/boot camps. Trainers can be unreliable and unfriendly. The gym itself can get kind of crowded, but if you are looking for the basics, it has it.
I canceled my membership 6 months ago and they are still taking money out every month actually they took more money out this month for some reason and I went into the gym to talk to a manager but he is never there I call everyday like 10 times a day and he’s never there makes no sense please save your time and money don’t ever sign up with this gym they are a bunch of thieves
Half the equipment is broken and it runs with a scam business model, theyll make it difficult for you to cancel. Just avoid it.Edit 3 months later: theyre still billing me, they cant even explain why. And no one answers the email theyve listed below to try and show they care!
This place is the worst, where do I start from the man that cleans the men’s room to the from counter are all rude with the one exception of the short brown skin lady that wears the glasses and has braids she is the only delight that this gym has to offer I wish I could had givin it 0 starts

2022-03-09Wish zero stars could be given. I joined this location when they first opened - it was great - great manager and fabulous trainers. Over the years they began hiring do nothing managers and the good trainers all left. Machines are constantly broken and take forever to be fixed. The worse thing is the gym was filthy. I joined the Y and have never looked back. My advice - go to the y across the street or Harbor Fitness a few blocks away

2022-03-22This location is alright. The ceiling is very cheap tho. I touched it to see how dirty it is. Because it looks very very dirty. And it was. Plus I’m only 5’8 and I can easily touch it. So it’s very low. Also they aren’t even installed in. The ceiling POPS OUT. But the staff is very friendly. And the equipment is par. You could get the same for a lot less.

2022-03-09This gym has been charging my account for months after Ive replaced me card AND canceled my membership. They also refused the issue a refund when I canceled on the 1st of the month, only minutes after my card was charged and over charged, stating that my cancelation would go into effect the following month and too late to be applied for the current month. After receiving a confirmation of the cancelation the following month, I got another email stating that they tried to charge my card again, but it must have expired (it expired 6 months ago, hence the replacement, which I never updated with the gym). This gym is a thief. Mind you, they have already been sued for this.

2022-04-08During the pandemic I put my membership on freeze. I was told I could do this as long as I wanted. Then a.year later I noticed that I had been charged for three months of membership. When I asked for a refund because I had been told explicitly that my membership could be frozen as long as I wanted I was told that it was not possible that I had been told this and that they arent calling me a liar but... Excuse me? Goodbye NYSC!

2020-10-12As with any other Brooklyn locations I have mixed feelings about this gym. It is spacious and have some good and unique machines. But free weights are understock. I am thinking of switching to other gym.

2022-04-26Have never visited this NYSC. I have never joined this NYSC. I was a member at the Cobble Hill NYSC before the pandemic, before they shut down.Imagine how surprised I am to be receiving monthly billing from this NYSC for membership! This is literally illegal. Cant wait to report them.

2018-02-26While visiting Brooklyn I got a quick workout in at NYSC. A large variety of cardio machines are available. Separate areas for cross training and weights. Stretch area space is kinda squished in. Shower and washroom facilities were clean and hair dryers available for us long hair dont care girls ;) I also took part in a free yoga class and the instructor was great! Never caught his name but my abs hurt 2 days later ! Towels available. Overall would go again if visiting the city.

2021-04-26Absolutely ridiculous and no way to do business. I would give zero stars if it were possible. I cancelled my membership and 3 years later, they are still charging the card on file...even in the middle of a pandemic which they probably weren’t even open. When I contacted the park slope gym where I enrolled they said there was nothing they could, they lacked empathy and professionalism. Hands down the worst experience ever.
