New York State DMV - Harlem in other cities:
I went to the DMV Wednesday January 26 , 2022 and the services is so bad , I tried to get help from the shift supervisor ( Richardson)but she was very nasty person and rude , they don’t treat person as a customer , I don’t understand how the keep people like this , I never going back for anything , they treat people like garbage and that’s no nice. People should give respect for others .
2/21/20 @4pm. On a Friday at 4 left at 7, It was PACKED, the duration of stay time depends on your purpose. I needed to upgrade to the inhanced license, which required, New pictures, con Ed, SS#, passport, current license and $42. But, I got it done!! Now, I CAN TRAVEL TO THE MOON!!!!!! With Trump in office, I might end up there!
NO MORE EXTENDED HOURS! Dont go there anymore for the extended hours; they were posted for Covid convenience. They are back to 6pm closing time. Unfortunately found that out trying to register my car and plates smh. Site needs to update other affiliates that this was a waste of my time.
Bureaucracy is never a pleasant process, but I felt like everyone who works here is generally acting in good faith, and when in doubt according to the letter of the law. Theres a lot of very impatient people from the public here, and I applaud the team at this office for maintaining calm under pressure in the midst of COVID and everything else. They were properly maintaining social distance, frequently cleaning all surfaces, lots of hand sanitizer everywhere and generally maintaining good order.
I went to renew my soon expiring ID and get the new real ID on a Thursday, @1:55pm. I will give them 5 stars because I liked how organized they were and how most of the staff was professional and nice. However, this place is beyond crowded. I mean crowded 😱. So I end up leaving at 5:10pm. It might not sound like 3 hours is a long wait but trust me, it is. And the fact that every second they announce a ticket # and a counter #, on super loud PA system, gives you the ultimate headache 🤕. I left there super dizzy and desperate to catch some fresh air. My suggestion is to go there as soon as they open and probably it will be less crowded.
Employees are rude then you ask for a supervisor thinking he or she, will help or resolve whatever the issue might be and they are worse…All they want is money(I guess is about money)..They cannot help you get a replacement driver license because I got robbed and the police officer didn’t fill out the form correctly BUT I can pay for a replacement SMH. They just want peoples money besides being rude and frustrated. They need people skills.
The line was a block before opening.I came at 9:30 on a Thursday (it opens at 10 am) to do the test/permit and I got out at noon. Not awful if you are prepared to lose half a day and you know the amount of people here is humongous. Employees were all nice.On the other hand yes, it’s 2.5 hours for a 20 mins test...
Not great at all. We made our appointments in April and the earliest days from the last week in June. They state to be there 15 minutes before your appointment. So, we show up and guess what their system is completely down. So, at least theyre going to honor our existing appointments for up to 2 weeks. I have to say that their staff (the security personnel outside the DMV) were on top of it. Informing us of the situation and our options. They also helped with getting applications for a lot of people waiting for their appointments, to lesson the time I side. But of course this was before we were told that the system was down and not able to assist anyone. They said to come back later in the afternoon or on another day. So staff 5 stars! The facility 0 stars. They should have informed of before showing up. Overall a 3 star! I cant comment on the experience inside because we didnt make it.
If i can give negative stars. I would. Don’t ever try to go to this place. 1 day is not enough just to update my driver’s license. There are 30 total counters but less than 10 are operating. The room is full of people standing up waiting the whole day for their turn. Not coming back ever again. No system in this branch
Thw DMV is ALWAYS crowded and busy at ANY TIME OF THE YEAR! I have them 3 stars because it moves sooooooooooooo slow! But the people that work here are friendly and very helpful 9/10 times. Definitely be prepared to be here for more than 3-4 hours. (Especially for everybody that has to upgrade their drivers license/id cards... Youre gonna need a new pic. (Mandatory). And a 3 pieces of proof of address. Birth certificate. Social security card. 6 points worth of id credentials, and about $13-$45 depending on what youre upgrading to. Regular upgrade with the black star - $12.50. Enhanced upgrade to travel to Canada and Mexico with just an iD alone (no passport needed), $43 and some change.
Staff at the top floor front entrace, make me fill out two forms I didnt need, even when I asked twice and I explained the reason of my visit to two of them. Upon submitting my paperwork at the windown, I was told I have to return next day to bring a document I already presented with all my documents but they mistakenly didnt see it. They believe they were so generous because I didnt have to make an appointment for next day. 😤
My experience at this DMV was terrible. Every single person working there was rude and impatient. I waited hours for a process that took less than 10 minutes. They gave me a number that was completely skipped so I went to go ask for help and they rudely told me to go to the front desk. I waited an hour to get a new number and proceeded to wait another hour to have my new number called. Not to mention, they dont even call the numbers in order. Its a mess here; be prepared to wait over 4 hours if you go here.
My experience here was straightforward pretty much. Follow what the DMV employees say. It can be hard to pay attention due to how busy it is during certain times but, dont be afraid to ask if youre ever lost. My only regret is how the permit aisle is out of place to the main aisles. Took me a while to find the first aisle after spinning around the 25 or so aisles around me that were easily visible. It would be nice if you placed some signage around the waiting area to better point that out. Overall this experience was something I wasnt expecting for a DMV.
3 different employees assisted me during my visit yesterday. The first two were friendly but the third was downright cold for no reason. I get that working in customer service is a difficult job, as I have a similar position. But this woman was rude to me from the get go even after I greeted her and was very polite. Not only that, but she misspelled the street name on my license. Didn’t notice until after I left, so I called the DMV this morning to get it fixed and the representative on the phone was incredibly useless and didn’t seem to care that this mistake was the fault of a DMV employee.
I was there over 4.5 hours, joining the line @ 11:50am, then standing in line inside to visit the 3 windows necessary to upgrade to an Enhanced Drivers lic. It took 90 min. of standing to get to the first step. Two minutes at that window with courteous & efficient service, then I sat for about an hour before being called to the second window for my photo. Again courteous/efficient service took about two minutes then I sat until 4:25 when I was called to the third window, about a 5 minute process to scan my documents and pay. I left @ 4:30. There is no accommodation for people with mobility issues. No way to sit until after one gets a number at the first window. I will never return to this office. I live nearby and previously had gone down to the express office on 30th street which is where I will return in the future. Avoid this place if at all possible. DMV needs to revise the system. Everyone there was there for a similar length of time. There are over 30 service windows and at any given time there were between 2-5 windows open. There is something terribly wrong with a system that requires the public to wait over 4.5 hours for 9 minutes of service.
You make an appointment or reservations to take a test and you are in the building for more then 2 hours. The security guards don’t wear their mask as required to do so in doors. And the place is packed. I thought the whole reason for the reservation was to limit the number of people in this office. SMH probably going yo get COVID sitting in here SMFH!
Completely awful. Ive been to this office several times and the employees were rude and incompetent. I was given wrong or conflicting information several times. The supervisors are incapable of managing the place and the employees are clueless. Their policies make transactions impossible and the employees and supervisors are useless. Its awful how they have treated a grieving son. Would give negative stars if possible.Update: they LIED to me about what I needed. They lied to my face.
Even during a health emergency, I was able to get the best service one could think of. The ladies in that office are rock stars. The only person who put me off a bit was the agent in charge of organizing the line. I thought his tone was unnecessarily aggressive. Not a big deal but I think he could learn a ton of soft skills from those two amazingly wonderful ladies that helped me.
Went to attain my non-driver ID card; one of the ladies at the front desk was extremely rude for no good reason. Makes me wonder how jobs at the DMV are given out. However the second person who filled out all the information in order for the process to be done was very kind and did her job very well.
SO GLAD I stood in line for 3 HOURS to still NOT NE HELPED. This location should be shut down or reported. If the employees don’t want to work…JUST SAY THAT. NO ONE should have to carve out 3-4 hours of their day to get the necessary documents to move about the state.
You NEED a reservation to enter the building which is checked at the door by security before entering. Once I got in, I was amazed I didnt see two thousand people waiting to be called. We went to renew our driving licenses and was in and out in about an hour. Staff was super nice too. Awesome experience today!
It was a really special experience, I went to get my license permit and I finally got it after so many years. I am so excited and very thankful with each and of the clerk that assist me. Everyone taking the precautions necessary to keep staffs and customers safe. Making sure people respect social distance and providing hand sanitizer at the entrance. Highly recommend it.
I was attended by 3 different people during my visit. I was treated respectfully. Must be tough working there. That being said, it is asinine that this relatively small office is designated to serve all of NYC past 125th st. Visit lasted over an hour, for an ID renewal, with a reservation.
I cannot say enough about what a wonderful experience my visit to the DMV on 125th Street was. I actually am now looking forward to returning again in 10 years! I had to show up in person for medical reasons and because I wanted the enhanced license. Booking an appointment was a breeze. I cannot say enough about the kindness and helpfulness of the staff - they were helpful, cheerful and funny - which lifted by heart in these scary, difficult times. Thank you, thank you, thank you for being such delightful, engaging and warm people!
Made a reservation, it was quick and easy. The staff was very nice. Took me an hour and a half to get everything done. Currently waiting for my learners permit to be mailed. I recommend getting a folder with every document you need ready before you turn on the line. Theyre going to ask you for your documents three times. So always keep them on you and ready. Itll make the lines move on quickly. Dont forget your photo receipt after you took the picture and signed it. I took the picture twice because I forgot it. Anyways good luck on your test. Theyre easy if you study. Look for DMV practice test apps.
I can only speak of one experience I have had here. I was trying to register a vehicle. The pandemic has made the process more difficult by not being able to do things in person. However it wasnt very necessary. Just trying to call and speak to a person was very difficult. I waited hours on hold. Told things that were very generic and didnt pertain to my situation. I was sent back documents that were needed to complete my registration because they didnt take the time to find that they already had the documents there. I had to go in person to use the drop box. When I arrived. There were many many people outside not social distancing and or wearing masks. Even the workers werent properly social distancing and wearing their masks correctly. They came in contact with so many people. Not at all what I expected when I showed up. I think however my information was finally out together and begun to process. The stress they created however was very frustrating and disappointing. I have always known of and somewhat experienced some DMV nightmares but this was one to remember. Fortunately I wont have to deal with it for sometime.
As far as DMVs go, I had a very good experience here. I arrived at about 5:30pm on a Thursday to apply for a new non-driver ID as I recently moved to New York. The whole process took exactly 2 hours. This was the only DMV that was doable for me due to my work schedule, but luckily they give out numbers until their closing time of 6pm and then shut their doors and process everyone inside. There is a no-reentry policy after 6pm, though. The process was as expected. First they have welcome greeters to make sure you have the right forms and/or give you any forms you need to fill out. Then you get in a line where they double check you have all the paperwork and identification needed, paper clip all of that together, and give you a number. Then it’s just a matter of waiting. After about 1.5 hours they called me and I took my picture and provided my signature. Then about 10 minutes after that, I was called again to submit everything, register to vote, and pay, which took about 20 minutes. Everyone I encountered was very pleasant, even after a long work day. All in all, very impressed!
My wife just left there this morning 4/5/21 without being service. She is wheelchair bound. Security was RUDE! And security wouldnt go upstairs and ask someone to come downstairs to help her. Especially since the elevator was not working. I wish their was a negative star!!
I went here for a drivers license renewal and it was an overall positive experience! I was there for around 30 minutes and everything went smoothly. (Note: I had a reservation.) The people who worked there were friendly, calm, quick and intelligent.Would be five stars but the womens bathroom was out of service, which caused a hold up in the mens line and could be a real problem for women with small children and just generally its way too busy to only have one usable bathroom.Highly recommend getting a reservation! It doesnt take long to do online. Anyone with a phone can do it.
Same DMV red tape you will find everywhere. The problem here is that the lines can be quite long and then when you get to the counter after waiting for more than an hour, they tell you that you have missing documents. You need to have the patience of an angel dealing with the DMV in the US.
There is no organization in this place. Some people have been here over 3 hours!!! This place needs more employees to handle the work load. Then they have the nerve to place a sign that states no eating, drinking!! Seriously? I’ve been here for almost 3 hours and I’ve seen people having meals. This is totally unacceptable. Why should you have to wait in excess of 4 to 6 hours to conduct business!!
Had a 7 a.m. appointment (was done by 7:15) to review status of license, paid the fine and was directed to pay tickets across the hall, after which I might be squeezed in to take permit test the ticket office did not open until 8:30! if I left premise I could not return nor could I wait on the premise for ticket office to open. and I needed an appointment to pay tickets. Naive me decided to go online route. paid the tickets online now there are NO appointments to take permit test calendar only shows up to November 30, 2020. This sucks. Must say the staff was exceptional, except security which wouldnt let me stay or return.
The customers service Representitive were very nice and professionals.BUT the security officer she was nasty and very RUDE not even a good morning not professional AT ALL She needs to RETRAIN AGAIN as a security officer working in a Fed.Office you should be more efficient and Professional at all times no matter what. I did this job for 17yrs.at a prestige college and no matter what its your personal problems were, you need to greets the customers with respect and a smile Remember you are the first person in the lobby the customers will see before the Representitives.in specific that security officer need to be RETRAIN
I cant say enough good things about this place. I have lived in 5 states, and Ive never seen a more organized and efficient DMV. Everyone is extremely kind and helpful. There are people posted everywhere even outside when youre getting in line to help you and direct the crowd. They make your time waiting efficient by looking over your documents to make sure you are all set beforehand, and they hand out permit test guides for anyone taking the test.I went in to transfer an out of state license. I used the DMV website to check which documents I needed to bring with me and had them all prepared. I arrived at 8:30am on a Tuesday (Christmas Eve Day), just 10 minutes before the center opened. The line was wrapped around the block. I was inside the building by 8:50, had my picture taken by 9:30, and was out by 10:30. They are handling at least 3x the volume of a normal DMV in another state and doing it in the same amount of time if not even faster. The only reason to give this place 1 star is if you literally have no idea how a DMV works. Thanks for a great experience!
Went to replace a lost drivers license (I would have done online but I needed it mailed to a different address). I came with the forms printed and filled out already and as soon as I checked in with the greeter and got a number I was called up. Staff were helpful. I was in and out within 20 minutes, when I had been expecting to be there at least an hour. It was around 11am in a Thursday, the place seemed very busy but efficiently run. The only reason I’m not giving five stars is because one bathroom was out of order and it didn’t seem like there was much waiting room.
Went in 2pm for motorcycle license and took the permit test within 10 minutes but then waited 2 hours to be seen to actually get the license. Lady was very nice and manager readily available. Left with everything accomplished at 4:15. Lots of workers and keep things moving fairly well. Wall to wall people standing room only. Busy but get things done
On January 08, 2020 I went to the Department of Motor Vehicles on 366 West 31 street between 8 and 9 avenue to attempt renew a driver license. The line was so long that I estimated between 30 to 45 minutes just to get in the door. Many people waiting in the cold. My estimated time to complete would be between 3 and 5 hours. When I saw this line I decided to go to the Harlem DMV 159 east 125 street. I got there 45 minutes before closing and without an appointment. There were about 250 to 300 people in line that were called before my number. I completed driver license renewal in about 90 minutes. Very quick and efficient employees alone with having great professionalism. While everyone experience may vary, I give this place 5 Stars. I am so glad I went at that time since this was before the COVID-19 lockdown in New York City. Going to the DMV today will have resulted a much slower process in Driver License renewal.
There needs to be a discussion about the lack of cus service given at this location. Some of these employees are rude. Today, I wasnt given an application by an older woman with box braids. She asked me unnecessary questions and was extremely rude to me for showing her documents I was asked to bring via email! She did all of this and still forgot to do her actual job, which was to give me an application.
They were fast and thorough and very very helpful I was able to get two things done in less than 30 minutes I had registration done and my drivers license done under 30 minutes those people are great their kind or nice or it could have been because I had the last appointment of the night and they probably just wanted to get me out of there but they were great
I was dreading the visit and was in shock (in a good way) by my experience. I went at 10:30 am on a Friday with no appointment . No wait to see a greeter who confirmed I had the correct forms(and had the forms if I needed them). Then sent to a very short line where my key documents were checked. Then given a number. I expected a long wait at that point. In less than 20 min, my number was called and was able to register my car and get plates in the spot. I needed to transfer title to another state, and DMV worker walked me through how that worked. To a person, everyone working there was lovely and patient. Walls decorated with fabrics and pictures. Honestly a very pleasant experience!
Everything went well until I got to the processing window. My certified copy of my BC has a misspelling of my first name, I have not had a chance to have it corrected, but it was used in the past and I was able to obtain my dmv ID. Now that I am applying for a new one ( I moved to another state and returned to NY), I am told that my new ID will be printed with the spelling of the BC even though all of my other identification is correctly spelled. What bothered me was that the processor implied that I arbitrarily spell my name the way I want instead of whats on the BC. Well, if that was the case, wouldnt all my records reflect what is on my BC, like school, medical, etc.? Never assume! Sometimes it is what the person say it is...a typo!
Literally the quickest day surprisingly! Got in by 9:12am and was out no later then 10:20am. My cashier who picked my picture and did my transaction was super sweet. I wish I got her name but I did hear her mention her last name Mrs. Perez! Thank you again for being super sweet an funny!
So taking the permit test was quick and so easy, if I hadnt studied I still would have passed, just by taking the practice quizzes online and learning that. Anyways, I got 20/20, they took my pic and made a 5 second vision test. Gave me the reciept and all of that lasted only about 15 minutes. But then the real waiting came.. They give you a number and you have to wait for hours with like hundreds of other people listening to a new number being called out every few seconds. Theres 30 counters but the wait is still so slow. Ive been waiting for an hour and a half now and still nothing. edit: ok so my number got called after an hour and a half and then the latino lady at the desk got my paperwork wrong and i had to get another photo. so that was another little extra hassle except nobody complained that time because the latino lady was pretty. and thats that folks.
Have your paperwork in order!!!! Even following the checklist on the DMV website, didnt connect the dots. For example, Question: Whats the difference between your birth certificate and your last name on your drivers license? Answer: Your marriage license or Divorce Decree. BRING BOTH if you have them. When you think you have everything, CALL TO MAKE SURE!!! Call to confirm!!! There was a guy cursing and really upset because it was his second trip and he STILL didnt have his paperwork in order. We almost got sent home, too, but the representative was so helpful. We didnt get EXACTLY what we wanted but we were okay with what we got!!! Call to confirm! Call to confirm!!? Call to confirm!!
The NY DMV office in Harlem has an extremely kind and respectful staff. I mean everyone from the security guards who greet you at the door, to the agents handling your request. I made a reservation and was out in an hour. Great experience! I hope they continue to be this efficient.
I highly recommend getting a reservation. I went when it was packed and I was in and out in 30 minutes, while people all around me were saying they were waiting for hours. The DMV does a good job of honoring reservations. They even have signs that say if you are waiting more than 15 min and have a reservation speak to a manager. Everyone was very nice and efficient as well. My only con is that theres not a lot of areas to sit, so people are just kind of standing everywhere.
Some of the employees here are incredibly rude and disrespectful, not taking any time to explain things to people who have never gone through dmv processes before. They clearly don’t enjoy helping people or their job. Wait time is also very long since the crowds are enormous. But one lady was very kind, efficient, and pleasant to talk to. She’s the reason I’m giving three stars instead of none.
Depends on what service you are going in for. I got there at 8;30 am and the line was already a block long. As soon as they started letting folks enter the building The line moved relatively quick. I already downloaded the forms I needed online and filled them out. I was there to renew my registration. As soon as the dmv employee handed me my ticket my number was called. I was out. In 6-10 minutes.
When I got there at 8:30 in the morning there was a line outside going all the way to the end of the block. Took about 10-15 minutes to get inside and was done by 9:30 registering my vehicle. It’s probably crazy later in the day but I had no issues first thing in the morning and everyone was courteous and helpful. Please make sure to have all your paperwork ready so you don’t waste your time. It’s all in the website.
Id read on some other reviews that the process could take 90 minutes. I went there today and it did exactly. I arrived on a Monday at 10AM and was out at 11:30AM. I had to wait in three lines (one to get a number and to verify the documents, another to take a photo, and another to pay). Im not sure why some of that couldnt have been consolidated, but thats why we use the word bureaucracy. Everyone I encountered was at least pleasant and there was staff to help direct people arriving which was nice. Just make sure youre as organized as possible with your documents in advance. I was able to keep my old license and to receive immediately a temporary license. My new REAL ID license is supposed to arrive in two weeks.
Renewed my drivers license for an enhanced version in less than an hour! And I didnt have an appointment. If you are reading this, you can go to the DMV website to know exactly what documents you need. You can also pre-fill the application online and print it out before you go. Check and double check to make sure you have all the documents you need (and that all have the same name and address) before you go, and try to get there earlier in the day. I got there on a Friday at 9:50 am and was out by 10:45 am.Be prepared to wait twice; once for the initial document review, picture and vision test, the second for the actual rubber stamp of approval and payment. Youll get your new license in the mail in 2 weeks. A temporary one is given to be used until then but does not have a picture. A smile and nice attitude will go a long way. It looked like the staff had to deal with unkind, frustrated behavior sometimes and its not their fault. The only area for improvement is the layout of the room. The longest lines are near the entrance, which blocks and confuses people coming into the room. I did not have to use those lines thankfully, but placing those counters towards the back of the room would create a better flow and first impression.UPDATE Jan 2019: Received my new enhanced license in the mail in the 2 week period as promised. Im so glad the lady gave me a chance to retake my pic; this is the first license pic that Im not ashamed of, ever!
OMG, checked my time when I arrived, 3:35 pm. Now 520 pm, from reading the reviews, this is going to be a while. I look around at the crowd, but all the workers seem to move slowly, if theyre no chitchating with their neighbors. I came this a.m. around 10:15, but didnt have the right papers, would have been out in no time. Seems if you come in the afternoon, you get punished, by making you wait longer. There was staff on the line this morning helping out. SMFH!!
Just spent 5.5 (five and a half) hours there today. All I needed to do was to renew my license and upgrade to the enhanced one. All the employees I encountered were polite and professional, and seemed to be working. I looked around and I didnt see the typical goofing off typical of most DMVs. Yet it still took all day to get what I needed done. I think its just the volume of people going. They need more DMVs in a city of 8 million. Place was clean and staff was polite; hence the extra star thrown in.
Actually the best DMV experience Ive ever had in my life! Went in on a Wednesday morning, arrived at 8:50am for a 9am appointment and was out by 9:10am! I would probably have been out even sooner if I had come earlier too. The staff there were also super polite and friendly, and very efficient.
The service here can be hit or a miss at times depending on what you’re coming for and at what time of day do you arrive. This is one of the busiest department of motor vehicles offices we have in the area. Your time here can last anywhere between 20 minutes to up to two hours. Waiting times are being cut down with the many upgrades and accommodations with Khios now available. They have been trying to prove their service more and more back there’s still room for improvement.
This is the only DMV Ive been in in three separate states that didnt seem designed to send you to the edge of madness. Even with the frustrations of trying to use their services during a pandemic, it was wholly positive. I wish they had a way to review the individual employees!
This place was honestly fantastic - woman helping coordinate title transfer from out of state (janet?) could not have been more patient and sweet, and the follow up afterwards was equally great. best dmv experience ive had personally in nyc. you know it always depends on the day, the time, the temp, the shape of the moon, etc, for a good expirience but i would absolutely recommend this location, everyone was helpful. people half and half wearing masks, but thats lit all of america and unfortunately the least troubling part about a dmv.
I have to say that getting a New York ID was a daunting experience since I was between hospitals, SROs, and the street. I found all the staff to be so kind and caring and patient. The Employees were so efficient. I thought I would be reading a book and waiting. But to my surprise I was gliding through. Thank you DMV in Harlem for making my day!
My purpose was to store my custom military plates, minimal wait on line at point of entry, some confusion from visitors without appointments and what needs/can be done on site, guards helped as best could,,again minimal wait once inside, staff at counter very helpful, courtesy, patient with visitors, thanks to the staff,,good experience
It was an situation downstairs in front of the building. Three guards were on duty two of the guards left one guard all by themselves while they stood inside the building and watched. If just one of them would have came out and handle one person the situation would have resolved its self
This place needs a lot, the workers need to work on how to be more polite. Work on professionalism and how to NOT BE SARCASTIC under any circumstances. They take all the time in the world and dont have much workers here. To add on, this place is nasty, bathroom is so nasty, and the sitting places are dirty. They have rights that lrotect them and i feel they take advantage of that, going back and forth with clients, not professional at all. Should work on a batter system that is fast and sufficient.
If you plan to go to this location, go early in the morning, anytime after, expect to wait an hour or so.I went online and brought everything requested, but since I got in around 12 noon, Ive waited 2+ hours. Need to fill out application, theyll give you a number and wait till youre called (30 minute wait). Took 2 minute at the clerk then waited an hour to be called again. Its their lunch time I guess, since I see many clerks disappearing.
DMV used to be one of the last places I would like to visit ... long lines, often chaos due to staffs coordinating poorly that wasted times to restart a new line ....This is my first time visiting DMV in Harlem, I am very impressed and appreciated their services. Staffs are friendly and knowledgeable to direct the lines; Staffs at windows are efficient and patient with clients.Originally planned a 2-hour trip, ended it was done less than 30 minutes!!
Its on like the third floor of this building, 159 E 125 Street, but there are absolutely no signs directing you to what floor youll find it on. Theres also nothing on the outside of the building that says DMV.Just head for the upwards escalators. Absolutely nothing and no one will be of assistance to you. When you do find it, do yourself a favor and fully expect in advance that it will be extremely crowded. The only two speeds you will then experience until youre able to leave this building are SLOW and STOP.
I was in and done in 15 mins. All because I made a reservation beforehand online. It was crowded and some of the equipment looked outdated, but everyone that helped me was clear, direct and polite. Some people waiting to be helped looked miserable, like they had been waiting forever. MAKE A RESERVATION BEFOREHAND.
Didnt have time to renew my NY drivers license by mail or online, so I had to face the music and do it in-person...So, I reserved an afternoon time slot at the Harlem branch, but I arrived 15 minutes late. The place was packed, and they were calling tickets that started with A and B while mine was W.I grabbed a seat and prepared for a long wait, but I had barely settled in when my ticket was called! In and out in 10 MINUTES! (Including vision test; kept my old photo, though). It would have been even faster, but I was asking the DMV person a million questions, which she patiently answered. Best DMV (or any govt agency) experience ever!
Slow, slow, slow. They gave me a number that never showed up, had to get another one. Also, they did not provide correct information that would have saved me 2 hours. My advice is to take as much documents as you can even if you will not need them, just in case. Because they will make you waste your time for sure.
This DMV is incredibly tragic ... the staff is incompetent and the self serf kiosks ate client information sensitive . There only 2 when the line to use the machines extend out the door is all the people on line waiting have easy view of all the personal data being entered . I only came here out of convenience but for the future I will be traveling to the bowling green location !
My wife had ties tge bathroom while we was waiting for our number to be called. The security guard would not let her use it. He said if she left out he wouldn’t be let back in. She spoke to 2 other supervisors and they agreed with the guard. My wife is a MTA bus driver so there should have been a courtesy for that, but a simple act of kindness could have been express. It seems that black people do this to their own people all the time. I really believe if we was white or dealing with white people they would have no problem with it. No one knows what medical issues someone may have show kindness isn’t hard. Sad place to go I never go back here.
A disgrace for the inefficient and understaffed service to get the new Real ID and Enhanced ID drivers licenses. It takes over 2 hours waiting to get through the process. New York State should be ashamed of the mistreatment and lack concern for its residents time in this inefficiently run, understaffed, and poorly organized DMV office. The supervisors and management should be trained to better organize lines and waiting areas. The NYS Commissioner should visit the various offices and see what it is like for average people.
SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE. I would give this place zero stars if I could. Sat here for 4 hours today from 11a until 3p to have my number called. This, only for them to tell me that the document they originally said I needed and had on hand wasnt the right one afterall, to transfer my VA license to a NY license. I then called VA DMV to verify that they sent me the proper doc and they said it was the correct one and that the NYC DMV I was at was incorrect in their proceedings... or lack thereof. Yes, thats right. Spent 4 hours of my day here for nothing. Only to be wrongfully turned away...
They screwed up my scans three times and I waited three hours before someone finally got it right and put through my application for enhanced license/license renewal. The whole while there are no updates to let you know the progress of the process. No one communicated so I kept having to explain what was going on as I was passed from person to person, and the employees at the booths forgot to return my forms and documents to me twice. The supervisors stroll by without acknowledging requests from their employees to help.
I made an appointment online, and still waited three hours. Maddeningly, they saw me almost immediately when I arrived, did 95% of what they needed to do, and then made me wait several hours to be called to another counter just to pay the license fee. I assumed this location might be less of a crush than the mid-town office, but now I am not so sure-- definitely would not go back here if I could help it.
Terrible and the most inefficient DMV I have ever been to. First time I went was to renew my license a year ago. Got a letter from them a week later telling me to come back because there was an error with my photo and I had to get it retaken.Flash forward to a month ago I wanted to get my photo replaced, since I’m not bald or have a beard anymore. Made an appointment and still waited for 2 hours. Said that the License would arrive in 2 weeks. Just called them now to see the status, mind you it’s been a month already and apparently it was lost so they’ll be sending me another one. That is twice I have had problems with something as simple as renewing and replacing a photo for my drivers license. I will not ever go back again and I suggest everyone else do the same.
Worst service ever. Waiting time is ridiculous and when u ask the supervisor why #s arent being called all they can tell u is how many ppl are ahead of u. I dont care how many ppl are ahead of me I wanted to know when they are going to start calling specific #s.The worst is they tell me there is 3 windows working on the L #s, but none are being called. Go figure
The staff at this location are very rude and management as well are incompetent and veryUn profesional.... even when you have the adequatepaper work for an ID/DL they still give you a hard time.. specially for those individuals that are born in US teritorys outside the 50 states.....
Renewed registration online, never got the sticker, got 6 tickets while away for a week, went to DMV, 1 machine down, second machine not able to give registration sticker. Waited in line for an hour to have the woman whose job it is to do this give me a form and a ticket and say wait for your turn. Only come here if you hate yourself and have a day to waste.
To say that my experience at the DMV in Harlem this afternoon was absolutely horrible, would be a gross understatement. Not only was it filthy, but I was met with employees who were unhelpful, inattentive and frankly rude. I was thoroughly displeased by the management and behavior of the staff ruining the DMV, and from what I gathered from my time there, most other customers were displeased as well. Sincerely,An individual without their permit.
I am a handicap man with short funds to travel who track a long way to come to this office yesterday 8/15. The representative assured me that I only needed a form sign by my landlord to complete the process. Today 8/16 she asked me for another piece of information that she never mention before. Make sure they give you a list in writing because this people will change information and you will not get anything accomplish. Extremely poor service.
The Harlem DMV is on point they are very friendly it only only took one business day to get my car registered and get my plates ps and the other reason why I got fast my plates so fast i had all my documents in order A shout out to the security guards there as well thank you again Harlem DMV 125 st😀
Worst service ever. Rude and disgusting staff. Especially the Asian lady named Hung. She is so difficult, she make a big deal out of nothing. The same proof of residency that another lady accepted the previous day she refused them. And almost throw them at me. I wish there was another place around me. The shift supervisor literally yell at me .
As far as DMV offices go, this is pretty run-of-the-mill. Expect the typical bureautcratic hell that most DMV offices are. That said, the number system works and makes the process of getting/renewing a driver’s license a bit simpler. Just make sure to have all of the correct paperwork in advance and expect zero leniency. Lastly, show up early.
Horrible system . Only came in to transfer an out of state license . 10 mins to get a form. Standing in line to provide proof too additional 30 . To be sent to waiting over 1hr an a half to only take a picture and provide signatures. To waiting on your number to be called once again . Been here since 10am it’s now 12:11pm and still waiting . Talk about aggravation!
I have never in my life been more disgusted with an establishment, never felt more disrespected, nor have I ever been so saddened by the service here. I am sickened by how terrible my experience has been here - four hours for an ID, and counting. Please, I urge everyone, DO NOT GO HERE.
This place needs to have a couple of lesson in how to talk to people whoever is in charge of this office should be ashamed on how rude they are ......train ur staff better just because u in a messed up area dont mean you have to act like it we all should get treated with respect as well as i respect them
Incredibly long line in front of the building before it opened, but it moved quickly. The staff was efficient, good humored and courteous. I would rate this experience as Borderline Pleasant. It was as enjoyable as a trip to the DMV could be. Just make sure you have every form of ID imaginable, especially your SS Card. Thanks Harlem, DMV!
They are all good staff here and very quick service once u have a number ticket. The only thing is a lot of people from all over Manhattan come here from all kinds DMV issues and Licences renewals thats what makes a big crowd and u can even fight all ur voliation on traffic tickets here throughout any part of New York City.
Am I surprised that The department of motor vehicles wasted my time?! Despite the nice appointment barcode....for a firm 1:30PM deal....the place was utter chaos. No systems. No appointment. Just a couple hundred desperate suffering people waiting to be fleeced out of their $$$...thanks a lot Cuomo.
I have a PA drivers license.I only came here to get standard NY ID. Terrible11am-6pm.Workers are okay at best but theyre definitely not there to help you, Just to collect a check.NYS has to be one of the worst states in America. Its over priced and most state agencies are ran poorly. Never had a good experience with a NYS DMV.
Maybe Ive just been extremely lucky but Ive been to this location at least 5 times for myself and my children and EVERY time I have been I have been impressed by the quality of service, the short period of wait time etc...the clerks and security are personable, courteous and patient. I dont go to any other dmv besides this one!!!!!!!
After spending 5 hours in two visits (my own fault) getting everything in order for a replacement DL, I went in for the third time confident that nothing else could possibly go wrong, only to be turned away because my SS card was frayed around the edges. The same SS card that was accepted as fine the first two times I was at this SAME office and is perfectly legible. It was only after standing off to the side for 15 minutes that a supervisor even acknowledged me, and that was only because the security guard felt sorry for me standing around for so long. And to top it all off, I asked another employee where to get a SS card replaced and he sent me to 55 W 125th St. (After standing in THAT line, I learned that SS office does not do replacement cards, only disability issues.)Inconsistent, rude, and unhelpful. Harlem DMV is one of the reasons all the DMV is hell! jokes exist. Definitely going to Midtown in the future, even if its twice as far. It cant possibly be any worse.

2021-10-24I’ve been wanting to get my daughter an ID Card for months. I decided to try this location as it was more convenient for me. Please note you must have an appointment to get in. From the time we arrived to the time we left we had a pleasant experience. When you arrive, you show the security guards downstairs you email confirmation for your appointment. You then take the elevator or escalator to the 3rd floor where there is another security officer who will direct you where to go. Once we went inside, we stood on line to wait for a representative, we waited maybe 15 to 20 minutes. Once we gave the representative all required documents, she gave us a number and told us to have a seat. We sat for maybe 10 minutes until we were called up to the counter. The representative was very polite and helpful. She asked if we took pictures already, we took her we hadn’t. She then instructed us to go over to the photo section to have the picture taken and return to her. Once we went over to the photo section, I informed the representative what her coworker had instructed us to do. She was more than helpful and took the picture right away. We then returned to the representative who was assisting us. The representative also explained the enhanced version of ID’s/permits/or driver’s license is not what everyone think it is. It cannot get you both out and into the country (US), She explained you would still need your passport to return to the US. My overall experience at this location was great, I couldn’t believe I’ve never visited it before. Our reservation was for 7:00 pm and we were in and out. We went on a Thursday which is also their late night. A little tip if you know what documents you will need to fill out print them out at home and fill it in so when you get there it saves you time. This location also has a restroom. This location is accessible via public transportation.

2022-05-16At this location is very difficult to find parking and give yourself at least half an hour to look for parking.Once you go through main door the guards are lazy, hate their job Lol. They say 3rd floor then you go upstairs. Another guard tells you to go and wait in 2 separate lines. There is no Air conditioning or fresh air on 3rd level. Plus nobody wearing masks. The windows people that work are super slow. Take their sweet time. Out of 6 windows only like 3 are serving help for your trip matters. I was there to surrender my NY plates and took 1 hour to waiting on line. Transaction took less then 2 minutes. Will not be going here again for sure.

2022-04-18Organized and feel safe, security is on the premises. Please know that you have to set up an appointment with the motor vehicles department and people are already lined up in the morning. Security has forms that you may out while you wait, and answer your questions, they are very helpful. Walk-ins are allowed, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

2022-05-16I made my appt for this location online and printed/filled out my application before I got there. I made it for a Wednesday at 8:40, but arrived at 8;00 am and was already hm at 8:40, the time of my appt and I live in the next borough. This was the fastest Ive ever gotten out of this DMV. One of the staff had told me they were working fast that day.

2022-06-08OMG!!! This place is amazing. I visited this DMV location to get driver’s license. Read all the reviews beforehand and After reading lots of bad reviews i was super sceptic and prepared myself for the worst. But to my surprise, my visit was very good. Great customer service, very polite employees. It took me literally altogether 20 minutes to get everything done. Definitely worth 5 stars. 👌

2022-05-26Location is inconvenient if you have a vehicle. The guards are more helpful and friendly than the staff behind the service counter and only have one or two clerks helping customers despite the full line of customers waiting to be tended to.

2022-05-10I am really curious to know the hiring criteria because the way Mrs Neil talked to me was all but Custumer service, respect and assistance. We really deserve better treatment and better Custumer as we’re Nys taxpayers. She really ruined my day.

2021-12-07Absolutely wonderful service! We went in today for two licenses renewals, and every step of the way we met with efficiency and celerity, all accompanied by smiles and gentle manners. Really pleasant specialists who expeditiously took care of all our paperwork and concerns. In and out in about 30 minutes.Congratulations for a wonderful team of people, and thank you very much for the way we (the people) get treated and assisted!
