North Mount Loretto State Forest in Staten Island

Staten Island, Richmond County, New York, US
Very peaceful seems to have some decent fishing. The Shortline could definitely use some cleanup. We wouldnt want the bald eagles nesting nearby getting caught up in plastic bags and any other type of refuse that seems to be strewn about the shore line. There isnt much parking but there doesnt seem to be that many people there at one time anyway so its kind of a push. Not much in the way of the concessions no food or drink to be purchased anywhere nearby. Bring your own but please take your garbage with you and enjoy your stay
Do not confuse with My Loretto unique area thats south of the forest and south of Hylan Blvd. The North Mt Loretto forest is a state land, managed by state rangers. There was one on patrol when we visited, which makes you feel more secure. The feel of the place is great. The forest has well kept trails and a map at the entrance. The entrance is not from Hylan Blvd, but from the Northern side of the forest - Annoy Rd.The landscape along the trails varies from wooded areas to small ponds with ducks peacefully basking in the sun. I recommend taking all the trails, as they are not long at all. It is hard to get lost, because all trails are loops, returning to the main road which leads to the parking lot.
This is an incredibly breathtaking place. I really DONt want to review it because I want to keep it a secret. From the big lighthouse topped bluff to the woodlands and fields, you would never believe that you are standing within the territory of NYC. They have made vast improvements as of late. I just love the vibe and history of this place.I have seen deer, snakes, bald eagles, falcons, snapping turtles and many other creatures in this place. One of Staten Islands best kept secrets.Sledding in the winter, too!
Nice and empty when compared to other greenareas in SI. Great place to get away for an hour and introduce your 4 year old to the outdoors while living in SI. Trail blazes can be difficult to follow at times, not usually an issue unless theres a lot of freshly fallen leaves.
Excellent its where I could think walk very slow take my time take some good photos always look out for the three American bald eagles, but not on this night wasnt able to do my walk on the beach during the day so I did a quick walk to reach my goal to Mount Loretto took some photos got home hour and 4 minutes I met my goal I like to keep healthy I have grandchildren changed my whole life I stop doing everything the hardest part is trying to do everything at once so Im down to 5 cigarettes a day after that Im done want to be healthy want to stick around 3 year old Love him 1 year old love her .We only get one chance in life we dont get a second chance to do it again trying to make it right trying to do the right thing God willing Ill stick around for many years to come . GOD BLESS , AMEN

2021-11-08Gorgeous grounds! Lovely trails and much beauty to be seen. Many types of wildlife and different types of ecosystems all in one huge park. Very relaxing and a great place to take a walk and unwind with nature.

2022-01-04Great place to walk. Avoid the paths not paved after inclement weather. Accessible to everyone for free. Many informative billboards along the way giving the history of Mt. Loretto, the pavilion, the grotto and wildlife. In the Raritan Bay you may see seals resting on the rocks or swimming by. Bird watching! Please dont feed the animals. Wooden benches to relax.

2021-08-08Ive seen so a number of people post pretty pictures of a pond and other nice locations but i was not able to see any of those places..I went on a trail with my partner and was attacked by mosquitoes from the start till the end.Although it was torturous, it was hilarious. However, i do not recommend coming here around this time of the year.

2021-07-24Love this area of Staten Island. If youre relatively quiet you can watch the groundhogs at the edge of the fields. There are a few nice trails, both paved and not, and you can walk along the beach.

2018-01-30This place is beautiful, peaceful, serene, well kept and much better cared for than the Conference House Park. Wish it was bigger but its still a great place to go for a walk and spy on nature. Looking out over the water to the Highlands you would swear you were a hundred miles away. A real treasure.

2018-09-17Mount Loretto State Forest has been beautifully renovated in recent times. It’s a great place to go and forget that you’re in Staten Island. Wonderful for dogs as well.

2021-05-16A really delightful patch of nature, letting you to get lost in peace and contemplation. There is plenty wildlife and birds to observe, if one is willing to wait out. Having said that, do make sure to bring a mosquito spray and come early, else parking is very limited. There are many more trails that are not shown on the map, so make sure to explore.
