Ive been going to NYC Guitar School East for a little over a year. I had been playing guitar for about 20 years but needed to break through a ceiling I reached with my playing, and I did big time. Classes have been opening up things for me in a big way. I have private lessons every week with Eric and hes not only a great teacher but exactly what I was looking for. Ive been learning things I never knew I could or would learn. Also, Ive attended the social showcase events and theyre a ton of fun and a great way to see and meet other musicians. Overall, its a really supportive environment and well worth the cost. Highly recommend this school.
Im SO glad I decided to sign up - its been a year and a half, and I still look forward to my guitar lesson every week! Great classes and instructors - they all are excellent musicians and teachers - nice, patient, fun - its a pretty chill environment, pressure-free - and you really will learn to play the guitar! They cover all key skills, techniques and styles - progressively - incorporating theory seamlessly to accelerate/solidify learning. And, the price is right!
This place is truly amazing. My two boys are learning to play guitar in a non-competitive, relaxed environment, while diving into great rock music! Both of them are students of James. He is a warm teacher who really gets kids and how they learn. Complex tasks are broken down so that they can build up to playing at the semester showcase with him. One of my boys started as young as 5 years old, which James was a pro at handling. I love how this group enriches the kids with music, and motivates them to take on challenges. My boys are going on four years of playing guitar here - rock on!
I cant say enough positive things about this school. It is a great environment to learn to play guitar, whatever your musical background or age. The space is warm and inviting and the teachers and administrators are wonderful--skilled at instruction and very encouraging and responsive to students. You will be surprised at how much you can learn in a short time in the group classes, which you can supplement with excellent, free online lessons. The generous make-up policy allows for a lot of flexibility if your schedule ever forces you to miss class. Also, I recently used the space for a film shoot that required a stage. Subrina and Greg were incredibly helpful and accommodating and the shoot went off without a hitch. Overall, a very special place.
My daughter started to learn guitar here and has now returned for several semesters. The teachers are patient, everyone is nice, and it has a little local community feeling. It would be good if they could cover a little more ground, but my kid loves it and has learned to play!
Love this place! My kids has been taking lessons here for years! Greg and Subrina have been really amazing instructors for him. They are the reason he keeps coming back every year! They are patient, motivating and they encourage the students a lot! My kid has made many friends here throughout the years. Its such a nice community!
My son, Jack, is going on 5 years now of private lessons at NYC Guitar School East. He started lessons to supplement the work he was doing with his NYCGS band, but his work with his current teacher, Gilad, has given him the skills and confidence to take his guitar playing to a new level. Jack has worked with so many amazing teachers at the School, but Gilad is phenomenal and a perfect match for Jack, who wants to be able to take his playing to college and beyond. Gilad works hard to help Jack find that blend of technical chops and genuine voice on the guitar. He has helped him become a bona fide musician, and treats Jack like a student AND colleague. Jack knows how lucky he is to get to work with a touring musician who brings everything he gets from the road to his work as a teacher! I cant say enough about how carefully and thoughtfully NYCGS East considers matching student and teacher!
Ive had a great experience with the very friendly staff here. They welcome you by name with a smile every time you come in, which puts you at ease and gets you ready to play.I was self-taught for a long time before coming here (Im 35), so I wasnt quite a beginner, but i lacked a lot of knowledge. My teacher, Greg Sardella, has found a way to help me fill in the fundamental gaps, using songs that I like and mixing in just enough theory so I can go off the script and explore the fretboard a bit. Hes also incredibly upbeat and passionate about music, which gets me excited to go to class even when Ive had a very long day at work. Overall, I enjoy the guitar more than ever and am so glad I made the commitment to take lessons.
Fun place to learn guitar! Kyle G is the best - a lot of laughs (and patience) as we jam through the Pearl Jam catalogue! Learning a musical instrument for the first time at the age of 39 has its challenges, but Im glad that I found NYC Guitar School East a few years ago as it has been a blast taking lessons from Kyle.
I have taken group classes and private lessons at the school. The experience of creating art (Wynton Marsalis describes music as the invisible art) is very personal and leaves one feeling vulnerable, so a nurturing environment is crucial. This place and the folks who work here are beautiful. I have learned and have been challenged though never felt anything but concern, care and support from all of the staff and especially from my individual teachers. And I can now really play music thanks to the teaching and motivation Ive received. I cannot imagine a better learning environment. If you want to learn to play music, there cannot be a better alternative.
I became a New Yorker from Taiwan since last April. Playing guitar and enjoying any music with guitar is always my all time interest. I started to learn guitar when I was in high school back in 1989. I was part of the guitar club and we had a great time playing guitar in the high school years. However, that is pretty much of my guitar learning experience.I started to learn acoustic guitar again in Taiwan four years ago. It brought me back to the old days and I played new songs with pretty much my earlier techniques. It was fun but nothing new and exciting.NYC Guitar School East is a whole new story of my guitar learning experience. Its within the walking distance of my upper east apartment and very close to Q 86th station. I was introduced to Eric Thachuk, the professional bass player. He is a nice, gentle and very experienced musician from Toronto and graduated from Berklee College of Music. He taught me how to play old school, modern pop, jazz and lots of more. He even appreciated the Taiwanese pop artist music I introduced to him!! Being part of NYC Guitar School East is a never-regret choice. Im 100% on it and will be there with the family going forward. Rock!
A cozy venue with surprisingly good acoustics! The room was prepared and set up two hours before show time. It is within a building and on a side street so noise was not an issue at all, and the friendly atmosphere of a local Guitar School complemented the experience. Will definitely book it again.

2020-03-08I have been taking guitar lessons for more than 4 years with NYC Guitar School EAST. The experience has been excellent. Scheduling is easy and they always try to accommodate you with the best schedule for your needs. The staff is very friendly, responsive, and truly care about the students. My current teacher Sam is always positive and patient. He encourages you when you feel like you hit a roadblock in your playing and has an effective approach to developing your skills. Sam also makes sure classes are enjoyable and inspiring. From sharing his professional experiences in music to finding the right songs to teach, Sam always keeps you engaged and learning. I have noticed huge progress in my playing and thanks to NYC Guitar School EAST, I am taking the next steps in advancing my guitar skills.

2019-11-19My child has been taking guitar lessons for more than a year now with James at the NYC Guitar School. James has always maintained a very positive and encouraging outlook, and constantly looks to find ways to keep my child interested in and excited about playing guitar. He works with my child to identify musical pieces that he is interested in learning and playing, and has also helped to introduce and broaden my childs experience and knowledge of other genres of music.I also think the NYC Guitar School is well run and managed. Madeleine and the rest of the staff are welcoming and friendly and always very responsive if anything comes up. I think that the staff really care about the students learning to play the guitar, and that is one of things that I have found that separates NYC Guitar School from the others.

2019-12-06I love NYC Guitar School East! My son and my husband are having lessons with Eddy. Both are super enthusiastic about their lessons. Eddy is at the same time patient and encouraging while maintaining a structured lesson and ensuring practice! My son likes it so much, he joined the Rock Band lessons with Subrina - the Rock Star!! The recitals are at the end of the semester - super mellow atmosphere for the kids. The school also has the amazing support of Madeline! She is always knowledgeable, eager and helpful with any guitar questions.

2019-11-26My daughter has been taking classes at NYC Guitar School for over 3 years. In that time she’s really developed a love for guitar playing. She started out taking group lessons and now takes private lessons with Greg. She loves working with him to hone her rock n roll skills. She also takes lessons with James when she needs some extra practice for her middle school Jazz Band. It’s such a warm and welcoming community!

2017-12-19This NYC Guitar school location is awesome! The space is colorful, inviting and the people are extremely friendly and helpful. I highly recommend taking lessons here. Ive had my guitar for over a year now and finally took the plunge to take lessons this summer and Ive gotten exponentially better since taking group classes. The group class environment is encouraging and more inviting for a beginner class. Definitely would recommend to anyone who has trouble practicing on their own and wants to learn the fundamentals of playing guitar.

2019-05-31James Wengrow and Alec Goldfarb are both fantastic guitar teachers! James has been my sons teacher for the past two years. After watching him have all the fun, I decided I wanted to learn to play guitar too! So Alec has been my teacher for the past year. Our teachers are both incredible and inspiring musicians. My son and I truly look forward to our Saturday time at NYC Guitar School East. Learning to play guitar has been a great way to spend time with my son and bond. If you have ever wanted to play, this is the place to learn!

2018-05-15Not every great musician is a great teacher. But Tia truly is. Whether I come to my lesson all-practiced-up or whether I havent practiced at all, Tia somehow makes every lesson a success. Shes a fabulous musician and really gifted at breaking musical elements down into easily digestible chunks. I have been taking private lessons for a few years now and Ive never had come away with the feeling that I was given a cookie-cutter lesson. All the instruction has been very personalized and it is a real pleasure to study here. Everybody who works at NYC Guitar School is lovely and personable. The online scheduler makes it really easy to cancel lessons in advance, provided you give the school enough notice. The cost of the lessons is quite reasonable. And the school even has these student showcases (see below, when played together with Tia at Arlenes Grocery.) I am having a great experience here and I highly recommend NYC Guitar School and Tia, especially, to anyone - at any age or level of proficiency - who wishes to study guitar.

2019-11-26The NYC Guitar School is amazing! My son has been attending private and group classes and is very proficient thanks to the dedication and great teaching of Subrina and the professional staff at the school (Madeleine). Subrina is professional, patient and fun. She sets high standards for the kids and they perform at their best under her guidance. My son has been able to perform at public functions (i.e. Charity Events, NYC Marathon, etc.) with the guitar school and it has been a fantastic experience. I highly recommend it!

2017-10-16I began taking lessons at NYC guitar school almost a year ago -- and more than 35 years after having taken my last guitar lesson as a teenager. If the music teacher of my youth had been anything like Jason Balish (my teacher here), and if I had had the resources and outstanding staff of NYC Guitar School in my life all those years ago, I never would have quit. I am thrilled to be taking lessons again, and grateful that this school is in my community. Jason is an incredible teacher, and has patiently and skillfully drawn out all the basic musical knowledge and guitar skills that had been locked away in my memory, and has pushed me further in my technique and understanding of guitar than I thought possible. My only regret is not having started lessons here sooner. Its a wonderful school for anyone interested in learning (or re-learning!) guitar.

2018-06-16I wanted to learn to really play guitar (instead of just noodling hopelessly in my apartment), and a friend highly recommended Mike Bennett of the NYC Guitar School East. Mike turned out to be a fantastic teacher! He’s also very patient and flexible and knows everything! (And he’s an excellent player and composer!)Then last month I joined Tia Vincent-Clark’s guitar ensemble class for adults (staying tethered to Mike, of course). I was very nervous, never having played in a guitar group before, but how can you be nervous when everyone is having so much fun, and no one hyperventilates over a mistake?! Tia is relaxed and low-key but somehow has turned us into a real band! She lets us choose what to play and then helps us get there. She’s great! The NYC Guitar School East is perfect for all ages – from kids to 100-year-olds! And why stop there?
