Twas a beautiful day at Old Westbury Gardens starting with a scrumptious lunch purchased at the Café in the Woods and eaten at a table under tall trees. In addition to the amazing flowers, plants, and trees were the many Seward Johnson sculptures, so lifelike that they appeared to be alive! Complimentary tickets may be available at your public library.
Beautiful place for and afternoon walk birds singing turtles in the pond, lots of fresh air a quick walk trough you can do in about 40 minutes a real walk trough you can spend all day, I got my tickets for free in my local library check before you come you can safe a couple of bucks
Loved this experience! The grounds are beautiful to walk and are expansive! The house is beautiful and its wonderful that you can see all the main parts up close and really enjoy the atmosphere like you lived there in that time. The gardens are absolutely breathtaking and so well maintained. Each flower was more beautiful than the next. Everything stands still just as it was and takes you right into that era. The docents there are most helpful and give you plenty of information if you ask! There is a little hidden cafe in the trees that served a delicious and fresh lunch. The girls that worked there were so friendly and helpful!Overall a must see!
Such a beautiful place. Highly recommend coming here. Beautiful house, gorgeous gardens, and everybody really nice (especially this lady who started giving us a mini tour when she saw we were asking ourselves stupid question- was not even a tour guide. Such a great human.)
We had a good time here. A nice place to relax and look aroundPros: the Gardens ( I do not remember the names) were beautiful with different types of flowers, specifically with the fountain and there was the one with a small pond. This place was nearby for me so thats a plusThe train is a cool addition as well. The cafe in the woods is nice place to eat. Good sandwiches, ice cream, drinksThe mansion was nicely preserved and had bathrooms. The day we went it was really hot but I bet that on a day that is cool it would be better. Thats why I rate 4 instead of 3, for us just because it was so scorching we would put 3Cons: 2 adults and one child was 36 maybe price less like 25 is better. The bathrooms that are not in the mansion are disgusting
A great place to spend the day. Admission includes free entrance to the Phipps mansion. You can join a free tour, or just walk about taking pictures as you wish. 200 acres of beautiful, peaceful grounds to enjoy. The walled garden is meticulously cared for the entire Spring/Summer season. Is a great place to take the family for a picnic, or day outing.
Came to see the holiday light show. While it was expensive at $30 a person, it was well done and worth the trip. Before and during the walk through the show, you can purchase hot cider and hot chocolate as well as snacks and treats. The portable bathrooms were clean and everything was well organized. The walk took about an hour, including the show that they projected onto the mansion. There were guides all along the route to insure that no-one got lost and they had a separate route for strollers and wheelchairs to get around the steps and narrow paths.Traffic was heavy but staff had it under control, making entering and exiting the property safe and easy. All and all it was well worth the trip and would be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
Early spring garden was so pretty. The staff were super friendly and helpful!!! If you are into flowers like I am you would really appreciate this place. One of the staff told us later half of May will be the best time. They have a cute cafe called “cafe in the woods” that sells sandwiches and cookies. We did not try because they only have outdoor seating and on the day we were there it was a little chilly. It looked like a great place to have a lunch on a warm day. We are definitely coming back in May!!!
Awesome and unique place on Long Island. You can enjoy well manicured beautiful gardens with various plants/ flowers. Or enjoy nature walk in the woods. Very friendly staff and volunteers. Well maintained beautiful house. $14/adult with parking included. Worth visiting year around. No wait time to enter! No dogs.
Even in early Spring season this place is amazing! Beautiful grounds with tons of nooks and crannies to explore. The grounds are wonderfully looked after. I can imagine how beautiful this place is when the plants awaken. This place is a must to check out when in the area! It’s a bit far from the train but worth the trek!
Beautifully maintained gardens and mansion! However, when we were there in October, there were several parts in the gardens that were cordoned off/not accessible. The Reflecting Pool had no water in it. You may have a snack or lunch (we had breakfast) at the Café in the Woods. Make sure you buy tickets online before you go as they do not sell tickets on site. We bought ours for $14 per person.
Me and my friend went there last Saturday August 7 , and it is very beautiful. The gardens and the mansion itself is well preserved and beautiful. I grow up loving historical places and wanted to visit more around here in Long Island. Well still needs to follow safety protocol because of the pandemic.I would love to go back again with my family next time I come here in Long Island. They also have their cafe and the food there is really good I would love to go back again and eat those almond croissant 😀😀😊😊
On June 23rd we was trying to enter to take a pictures of my graduating daughter. On June 27 I left a message and sent email asking what we should do to enter, however the Garden staff did not reply, and no call me. We did not had professional photografer my husband was going to take pictures , and I explained this in email, therefore when we did not receive answer, a believed that we can go and will buy tickets at gate. Also, about tickets, on answering machine the message is saying that tickets must be purchased online, on their website. But on website they sell only membership. In conclusion it was very disappointing experience for all our family in my daughters prom day. It is impossible buy tickets in advance. They did not allowed to enter because my daughter was in prom dress. I would not recommend this.We took beautiful pictures on the road. On beautiful field.Waste of time for commute, and bugging them to enter. I did everithing to make it right, but my email and phone call werent answered. Hope nobody will feel like me on the child prom day.
We had a wonderful experience and planning on becoming members. It was a beautiful day outside for a leisurely walk, talking in the beautiful nature and getting all me steps in at the same time. The mansion and museum were closed for renovation but still there was plenty to do and see without checking those out. Favorite part was watching all the turtles by the bridge near the temple of love. Highly recommended while the flowers are still in bloom.
Lovely place! Ive been meaning to visit and finally did. Parking is included with admission and there is a bathroom by the Cafe (to the left as you start walking in from the parking lot). There are handicap parking and access as well. They promote social distancing everywhere. I hope to spend more time the next time I visit.Update::I finally got to tour the mansion (masks required!) and there is a ladies restroom on the first floor to the left when you enter and gentlemens is on the second floor I believe. I would check with staff since I didnt ask or had a male counterpart to find out.
Beautiful place. I would place it at top two with Long Island Gatsby era mansions along with Planting Fields Arboretum. There are two amazing garden areas, nice pond, and huge lawns. Best flowers in the area. I was amazed by the flowers and all the bees and butterflies even in late summer. There is a good cafe in the woods for sandwiches and drinks as well. Only downside is that the roof is currently going thru restoration so the mansion does look like a construction site. Be sure to book days in advance, and I recommend 10AM morning spot to avoid the crowd.
We attended Westbury Gardens for our wedding photos. It was the worst experience we could’ve asked for. Don’t waste your time spending the $425 they charge because their staff is absolutely horrible, rude, and disrespectful to the photographers and to my wife and I. If your wedding venue suggest them as a potential photo shoot area do yourself a favor and please look elsewhere. When we called to try and reason with them to make light of the situation, they completely disregarded us and stated they spoke to the staff. Horrible management in my opinion.
This historical gardens in Long Island is worth a visit regardless of its entrance fee $10/adult and $6/senior citizen, even if the House is under renovation, you can’t get in the Mansion / Museum at the moment due to its refurbishment. But once the restoration is done, this Old Westbury Gardens will even be more gorgeous than ever! The gardens look very British. You can walk around the park with your dog for as long as it has leashed on. This Park is ideal for family as well. Children can run around the green meadows, there are no children’s playground though, haven’t seen one. But taking a stroll in this Garden Park is indeed invigorating. In Autumn, the flowers are mostly Chrysanthemums in colours of golden yellow, golden orange, magenta, light pink...so lovely all around the park. The Rose garden is gorgeous but roses are not in bloom anymore but imagine in summer when roses are at its peak. Could have been more lovely to take photos. I can highly recommend this serene place for people who wants to get away from the hustle and hustle of the big city. Always worth your time and effort.
I purchased one adult ticket and one student ticket. This was well worth the pricing. Parking on sight and plenty of social distancing. There are white marked arrows that help guide you to the main sections of the garden. It was a bit hot so definitely bring comfortable shoes and lots of water with snacks. You can definitely bring a blanket to lay down on the grass especially during the nice weather. Worth every penny.
Check your library for free passes...a low-cost day trip! Bring a picnic lunch and energy for walking. Theres an outdoor café w/basic seating, nothing fancy, not sure how good it is. Little kids might get bored with the interior touring of the mansion which has 2 floors available for viewing. Not sure if there is an elevator. Strollers may not fare well in some of the garden areas. Overall a perfect place that takes you back in time to the gilded age on what was once referred to as the golden coast on Long Island.
Disappointing. They harassed me and my wife for taking photos for ourselves, claiming that my wife was “dressed up” (well, she is beautiful :) We’ve been visiting this place every year, and this was the last time. Stay away - there are plentiful of beautiful gardens to visit in NYC area.
We came to see the shimmering solstice event. Definitely use restroom before walking thru. DRESS WARM !! Take your time, enjoy the lights, & take pictures. Dont use the premium parking unless you cant walk long distances. Parking was free btw. Beautiful light show too.
First time at the Westbury Gardens and I didnt want to leave. The parking lot makes it quick and easy to find parking. Advanced tickets for the garden are required now. We grabbed lunch at the cafe. They had a few sandwhiches to choose from and delicious pastries and desserts. The pumpkin chocolate chip bread was so delicious. Grabbed a hot chocolate to take on our walk through the gardens since it was a bit chilly. It was perfect. The castle, pool, and temple of love were closed due to ongoing work but still saw so much beauty. I was surprised and happy with how colorful and blossomed everything was for mid October! It was breathtaking and so surreal.
Beautiful gardens, lovely ponds and the house is like stepping back in time. Its a great place to walk around and enjoy the trees and the gardens. Very pretty, very relaxing. Its $12 to park and you can walk around and stay as long as you like. They have tours or you can go on your own. Highly recommend!
Parking lot attendant hit my car with his stick and then tried to fight me because i parked my car in reverse. We had witnesses & i made it known. I spoke to the supervisor about it & I’m hoping he fixed the problem because i don’t want anyone to get hurt by this extremely dangerous person. My dash cam has everything recorded but i don’t think thats a good idea to show that.Besides that the light show was beautiful & i would go again if it weren’t for the threat of my safety. It shouldn’t be that way.I recommend you park with your front first & pay very close attention to the way he wants you to park or he will hurt you.
Beautiful gardens. Looking forward to the roofing project to be completed. However, the tour of the first floor while under construction was still fascinating.Be prepared for a lot of walking. According to my Fitbit, I put in 7.3 miles just wandering the grounds. Food options are decent, but limited. The sandwich I got was freshly made, piled high with quality ingredients, and delicious. Very good iced tea selection.Make sure your phone and/or camera is fully charged - there are a lot of beautiful photo ops.I plan on returning after Ive fully recovered from all that walking.
🧺🌳🦢🦆🏛️🏠. One of my favorite experiences in the summertime. Great spaces for picnics 🧺, but be sure to mind the ducks and the geese. Bring your walking shoes, sunglasses 🕶 and sunscreen and enjoy the beautiful architecture, landscape and greenery. There is a walking trail on the property where you can cool down from the beating sun, but also taking scenic photos that are “Insta-worthy”.
This is such a beautiful place to visit, theres currently a light show here and Im going through a divorce, so when I see a couple walking through the garden: I remind that that love dont cost a dime. Perfect place for a wedding or a proposal. Get down on your knees dude. Yes!
This place combines two of my favorite things: History and Nature. We went on a cloudy July day, so the photos werent that great but they work. The staff is friendly and happy to help with any questions you may have about the house or the family who lived there. They have a lot of this to offer like a walk around the lake, a rose garden, a huge garden, a self-guided tour through the house, and so much more. I think we were there for maybe 4 or 5 hours, honestly, you could get lost here. (Update 07 Jun 2019: These photos will be changed sometime in July, as will my review.)
A nice place to have a picnic and some relaxed time. A lot to walk if u want to c the whole place, its a lot tiring to walk the whole session ... its a mind calming feel when u live and work in NY ;)Better carry water as few water dispensers dont work, and even if they do, its not cold. Only one cafe in the park which is obviously priced on the higher side, so u know what to do.Be sure to visit the Rose Garden and the house.
This place listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the former home of John S. Phipps, his wife, Margarita Grace Phipps and their four children. Completed in 1906 by the English designer, George A. Crawley, the magnificent Charles II-style mansion is nestled amid 200 acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and lakes. Westbury House is furnished with fine English antiques and decorative arts from the more than fifty years of the familys residence.Good place to visit with small children
Amazing place to spend the day, walking around nature and traveling through history inside the mansion, where they keep a very well maintained and pretty museum (just like a house, with all those luxurious details!). This sweet man in the mansion had great stories to share! Have in mind that entrance fee is per person, not car!
Love the gardens. Every time I visit it looks different. The walk is peaceful and has many varieties if flowers and plants.. The old house is kinda ugly, but as a Realtor, modern structures I see in Florida put this house to shame. Old, dark kinda depressing. History. Love it or not, it tells a story.
Shimmering Solstice is a beautiful lighting exhibit. I hope it becomes a more expansive and regular event. It would be awesome if it were available year round with rotating, seasonal displays! Multiple entry passes or allowing people to return for free at an off peak time would be most appreciated!A few helpful tips:Since the ground is not even or well lit, bring a flashlight, or at least portable phone charger if using your cell. Also, sturdy shoes that have good grip. There are only a few benches for the 10 min projector show at the end, so if you need to sit, consider grabbing a seat as people leave at the end of the previous show and relax for the 20 mins between shows or bring something.
Went for the holiday lights show. Totally overpriced and not worth the time or money. No one guide told us where to go and parts were blocked off. Couldn’t even buy overpriced hot chocolate because the stand was closed. Walked through in maybe 15 minutes and waited another 10 for the ligh show at the end. Save your money
This was once our favorite place to spend the day. It is an absolute shame that they are requiring masks to enter the house and even proof of vaccination for some events! We will no longer be spending our afternoons here…that is unless they drop their draconian measures!! Jesus saves!
Im upset when i got here i couldnt see the inside of the house since they were doing roof renovations but i will definitely be back for that tour when its finished overall. Great place for family picnic. Dates. Ig photoshoots. Just a great place to walk around. Only $12 admissions and they have outside cafe and clean bathroom.
Came here for the Halloween Jack-O-Lantern display which was such a spectacular display of artistic talent mixed with the ghoulish feel of Halloween in the night air. The grounds here are beautiful and my plan is to come back in the spring to take it all in under different circumstances. Definitely worth a visit.
A truly beautiful place. Nice walk in the gardens with much to see. The house was really amazing and we took the time to read the history of each and just look around. Would have loved to see the third floor, but it was closed. The cafe isn’t anything special, was hoping for something more. Took us about 2 hours to walk through the gardens and the house.
Beautiful example of Gold Coast living. The mansion, which is named Westbury House and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is being restored carefully and lovingly, but will not be open to the public until November 2019. The outdoor areas are exquisite. One of my photos shows the pool behind the mansion from an upper terrace. Built in 1906 as the country estate of John Phipps and his wife Margarita. I will return to see the artwork furniture, mirrors, and other collections when the mansion reopens. The gardens, refecting pools, and sculptures are not to be missed now and through the fall.
This is by far one of my favorite hidden gems in NY to go for a day trip. The perfect location for a photoshoot with your girls/family/S.O. in the gardens, enjoy the beautiful nature surrounding a gorgeous mansion, and take a tour to learn a bit about the sweet history of the property. If you go on a sunny summer day, make sure to bring a hat, cute sunnies, and a bottle of water to stay hydrated. And regardless of the time of year, opt for a comfortable sneaker or flat shoe so you can walk on grass, rocks, and dirt because not all paths are paved.
Every October Rise of Jack-o-Lantern has 5,000 carved and lighted pumpkins for your viewing pleasure. There is an amazing variety of even simplest one pumpkin designs and huge figures made of hundred pumpkins too. Several thematic areas unclude farm animals, underwater scenes, emergency vehicles, variety of skeleton adventures. Some parts have sound effects too. Separate area explains the process of creating the exhibit. Bring your camera or phone for incredible seasonal selfies!
Yeah sure it’s something to do, but for the price per person I’d rather just go to the Jones beach light show or travel into the city. The concession stands were also overwhelmingly overpriced after such a steep ticket price. The light show finale was tacky and underwhelming. The main areas got crowded and there was definitely no way that the conpany who ran the event took ticketed times into account. I wouldnt recommend this event to anyone.
Soooooo DISSAPOINTING!!!When I researched on Google, it showed dragons and tunnels and so many different things. In reality, you walk down a long path with thousands of Jack o lanterns on both sides, maybe 50 are designed artistically and gorgeous but 9950 other ones are really simple and kind of boring....feels like they are just there to fill up the space between the special ones.I wouldnt spend my money going there again.

2022-06-23Beautiful!!!! 😍 The grounds are massive. I bought tickets in the car as we were in the short line to get in. It was $14 a person which seems like a lot but this place is a gem. We spent an hour or so walking around the gardens and then decided to walk around the mansion. Everything was incredible! We were going to grab coffee elsewhere and realized there was the Cafe in the Woods. We got a turkey bacon spinach wrap, a banana and two coffees. They had great healthy options for sandwiches and salads and fresh organic unsweetened teas. They also had cookies and chips. Will definitely be back and highly recommend!!

2022-06-27It is a beautiful property. Stroller friendly except the main house. Advanced /online ticket is required. We visited the garden late spring, most of the flowers were already bloomed.

2022-05-02A gorgeous place. The house was built in 1906, but still designed as today. Not big chunk of solid wood American style, but more European type. Thanks for the Phipps family. We can enjoy this beautiful landscape without a big fortune.

2022-05-16What a beautiful mansion and garden. I am so grateful Environmental Defence Fund restored it. It is as beautiful as the Plantingfield Arboretum nearby. There is no reason to not stop by both, and this garden has more water features and a beautiful mansion to see. As for flowers in May, it has more wisteria, forget-me-not, and primroses and less azalea, and hydrangeas it seems. When you walk down from the house, be sure to turn both left and right to see the hidden gardens and swimming pool on both sides. The extravagant decorations in the house is ornate like what you see in a museum. So garden lovers, don’t forget to stop by the house.

2022-04-12Beautiful grounds. No flash photography allowed inside the mansion.Lots of green goose poop from our Canadian geese. However, there are many good benches to sit and reflect.People enjoy doing photo shoots (wedding, maternity, birthday) but some sort of restrictions may be in place. (From the grounds enforcer…best to contact them.)

2022-06-08We took the Secrets of the Service Wing tour & walked around the gardens afterwards. I wouldn’t recommend the tour because the guide didn’t provide a lot of information, there weren’t many preserved items from the period & the service areas of the mansion weren’t maintained well.We toured several Gilded Age mansions and this one didn’t hold up to the others. However, I gave 4 stars because the gardens were beautiful and the grounds were massive and a great place for an outing.

2022-05-23Beautiful! We loved the openess and well maintained grounds. We went mid May and the flowers werent all blooming yet. Will for sure visit again in the summer. Wish all of the fountains had water in them to add the extra touch.

2022-05-04Well manicured grounds and a serene experience for a couple of hours. The gardens are well taken care of and there is a large variety of flowers everywhere. There is an old mansion to tour - nothing compared to the Biltmore estate but still provides the old Victorian presence when walking through it.I would recommend if doing nothing in your hotel and in the vicinity; don’t drive from NYC because it’s not that worth it.

2022-06-07We went to Westbury gardens for a car show and to see the beautiful gardens and mansion. It was a wonderful experience we loved everything. The gardens are magnificent and the mansion is full of history which we love. The antique cars were great to see.

2022-06-15Such a beautiful place, historical manor and magnificent garden. Spring time was the best time for me to visit. A lot of flowers and the scent is inexpressible.
