Fantastic waitstaff, ambiance, and food at one of the most iconic restaurants in NYC. The lamb was succulent and the potatoes and brussel sprouts were the best I have ever had in my life. The Beef Wellington, cooked medium, was good. Truly New York fine dining at its finest.
For that price tag I would’ve expected much tastier food. The vide and decorations are unbeatable but the food quality couldn’t be more average. We went there on 2/15and they only offered prix fixe valentines week menu. Very plain 4 course, not live up to our expectations at all. It’s a perfect place for couples having fancy memorable romantic dates, but if you are going there for delicious food you’ll be disappointed.
Would give them 0 stars if it was possible. We were there to celebrate a special ocasion. We let them know that we were running late because of traffic and bu the phone they seemed super nice. But since we arrived they were rushing us that the kitchen was closing when at the time we made the reservation they told us the kitchen was open till late.We went with the 3 course menu and everything was horrendous except the beef wellington. Scallops came frozen inside. Lobster risotto came cold and the wine was hot. They only offer 2 white wines on bottle that go to the expensive side.Service was the worst, when we complained about all these they didn’t even apologize. For a restaurant that supposedly is this fancy it was shameful.DONT GO HERE. TOO EXPENSIVE AND DEFINITELY NOT WORTHY
Beautiful romantic Greenwich Village gem. Fabulous but pricey, but so worth it. My SO & I enjoyed our first meal here on our NYC visit. Service is attentive & professional, but not intrusive. Our meals were first rate and the ambience sweeps you away to Lancaster County, PA. Go and enjoy.
Beautiful dining experience from the service, atmosphere, and dining. We arrived early so we started with a couple of drinks by the fireplace and when we were ready, we proceeded to the upstairs dining room. We went with the three course meal. The upstairs dining room is a very intimate and the tables were a tad too close to each other. However, that did not deter from the dining experience. I would go back to try the 7 course meal.
Loved the total experience. Ambience inside was very romantic and cozy at the same time. We each other the 3 course meal. As it was anniversary the wonderful staff of the restaurant offered complimentary appetisers and desserts. Loved their Beef Wellington, it was the best I had anywhere else. The scallops and Tuna Tartare was also very good. For desserts Creme Brulee and Kahlua IceCream Capuccino cake were our favorites
My visit to this restaurant left an impression of a cozy, tucked away spot to have a beautiful dinner night. To start, I dont believe there were any signs outside the restaurant, so it was a little difficult to locate at first, but youll know it when you find it (it adds a bit of a satisfaction when you find it). There is a very cool bar to grab a drink at which is next to a lounge area with a firepit and it then leads to the dining area in the back.I was able to be seated in an upper level room which felt like you were in a secret spot of the restaurant. There were two options for food, the 3 course prix fixe or the 7 course tasting menu. To be honest, I wasnt in the mood for a couple of the foods on the tasting menu, so I decided to go with the prix fixe. We had the foie gras and the prosciutto for starters. For the main course, we got the duck and the halibut and we did the creme brulee and the chocolate souffle. In my opinion, I didnt think it was the best food I have had at a restaurant of this quality, and the staff seemed busy that night, so our food did take longer than usual to be served. The portion sizes were really small for the overall cost of the meals. I am hoping that the 7 course tasting menu is better than the prix fixe, but I didnt get the wow factor I was looking for. Hopefully, I can try the tasting menu the next time I visit. Overall, the place was a beautiful atmosphere to spend the evening.
One of the best places I visited in NYC during our trip. We visited NYC right before heading to Hawaii on our Honeymoon and I wanted something very special to celebrate my fiancé (wife to be) birthday. It was a very special night; staff are extremely friendly and the food is so good especially the tasting menu with wine pairing. Everyone raves about the beef Wellington but for me the entire experience was the star. We left happy so 5 stars for that.
The ambience there was very nice and great for a romantic space. Our waitress was really sweet and did a great job. We did the Valentine’s Day tasting menu. I am writing this a few months after because I haven’t been able to get over how disappointed I was by the taste of the food and that is why I am giving this three stars. Every thing we got was good, but just not as I would have hoped for the price that we payed. The scallops didn’t have the buttery texture with the nice sear that you look for. The lamb was not tender enough. I will say the mushroom soup and desserts were very delicious, but just disappointing overall, again, especially for the price. I would return to sit by the piano player and just get drinks, but I wouldn’t return for the food. I have eaten better of the same food at just nice of restaurants for a lower price.
We came here for our 10 year wedding anniversary dinner and it was sublime. The service was exceptional, the drinks were amazing, and the food was divine. The decor is beautiful and the candle light ambiance was very fitting for our occasion. We chose the 7 course tasting with wine pairing and it did not disappoint. I was also excited to see the talented Marc Devine playing piano! I cant wait to go back.
This was one of the best dining experiences Ive ever had. We went for Mothers Day and the brunch menu was delicious. I was especially surprised by how amazing the mushroom soup was. Ty (Tai?) was our server and she was wonderful. The jazz band was lovely and the restaurant itself was beautiful. Will absolutely be back.
Had a gift certificate. But would totally go back without one. Its price fix but great. Obliviously your going to pick the favorites. Great service. Romantic settings. Historic architecture. So fun and off to wonderful dinner out. Go early to enjoy the bar and super quality drinks.
Great for special occasions. The portions are excellent, food is perfectly cooked, the ambiance & service was on point in the evening. The staff was knowledgeable about what was being served and wine suggestions were nice.Price is on a higher side, but it’s on point with restaurants of similar stature and the food speaks for itself.Would visit again.
Went on Valentine’s Day, they had a prefix menu serving a 6 course meal. Every course that came out had a 30-35 min wait time. My dinner reservations were at 9PM, I didn’t leave with my group till 1am. I had to tell the waiter 3 times that I ordered a drink. The food that was brought out was cold (hen, beef Wellington, and the scallop dish). If I could give this 0 stars I would. I had a HORRIBLE experience. The food was honestly disrespectful that’s the only way to put it. And to charge $350 per person you would expect better service and better quality of food. I will never go back nor recommend anyone to this establishment. If the manager wants to contact me, please do, so I could explain the other 5 people in my parties experience, instead of them giving the same review, plus more.
Outstanding restaurant but a bit hard to find. Beef Wellington is out of this worldThe food is presented beautifully. The service can be a bit spotty, unfortunately. However the experience is wonderful. Also a perfect place for birthday celebrations too. The prix fix is 105 per person so be ready to open your wallet for this dining experience.
The price is not worth the experience. The tasting menu had some standouts, but more than a few head scratchers. Beef Wellington was excellent. Ambiance was fine. Hostesses were rude, waiter was standoffish until we ordered alcohol. Overall, a pleasant experience I wouldnt recommend.
We went here for our 10 year anniversary dinner. The hostess gave us a romantic table that was very private and overlooked the courtyard. The service was great. The food (seven course chefs tasting menu) was excellent: The tuna tartare and scallops were very good. The pasta dish was my favorite. They allowed me to substitute the duck breast entrée for the beef Wellington and it was phenomenal. The cheese course was my least favorite. For dessert, I substituted the berry compote, and it was OK.At the end, they brought us a “happy anniversary” tray with a few on-the-house desserts. It was so thoughtful, and we were very appreciative!
Very romantic setting, amazing, proffesional, knowledgable staff starting from the second you enter the establishment. Very delicious food, top notch service-wonderful place for two or more. Seven course menu was just right with a great selection of drinks to accompany amazing food.
Amazing & Stunning decor. Our waitress Ti ( 05/18/2022 ), was attentive and a bubbly personality to match. The reason for the 4 stars there were flaws with my meal from the chef. Ordered the lobster risotto, i thought i would get all the meat from the lobster i only got three pieces and two out of the three were tough and rubbery when i tried to eat it. For dessert the chocolate Soufflé half was undercooked. Everything else was perfection
After a somewhat decent dining experience for Valentine’s day with the prefixe menu, restaurant gave themselves extra tip by forging tip that was close to $200.Absolutely illegal and had to dispute for 2 months until credit card (not the restaurant) agreed to pay us for the forged tip amount. Manager was “not there” for 2 weeks until the restaurant admitted he was unwilling to talk to us, which is very dodgy and incredibly unacceptable for any restaurant, but especially one this expensive. We will never be back and will never recommend to anyone… You would think a restaurant at this ‘level’ in NYC would be better. Left a very bitter taste after a decent experience.
Called reservation while planning 10th anniversary trip to NYC.I cant say enough about the waiting staff, chefs and bartenders - not to mention the excellent food and drink. They TRULY went all out to ensure we had an evening we would never forget! Cant wait to visit again!
Went there for our anniversary dinner. Food was good our server was a an absolute gentleman. Ambiance was great too.But it all didn’t start that way, the Maitre D seemed annoyed and unwelcoming upon our arrival, his expression and body language unfortunately gave away his lack of composure. This left a bad aftertaste though out the experience despite everything going well.
Honesty, this restaurant is nice and cozy, perfect for couples; my husband took me there for our anniversary a month ago, and what I expected to be a great night turned out to be one of my worst experiences dining out, I have to say the service was excellent, but right after we left the place precisely 30 minutes after I started to feel nauseous I thought I was going to be okay. Still, it got worse and worse; I ended up with terrible symptoms (which I don’t want to mention here, but you can imagine). I had plans for the next day, and I had to cancel them due to those symptoms; I just had my regular breakfast very early that day, so I’m 100% sure it was something from the dinner; Ive never had written a bad review because I worked in the industry and know that people tend to exaggerate, but I felt ignored when I email the restaurant. They didn’t even answer, no, I don’t want a comp; I just wanted that they check their ingredients and what happened to me never happen to somebody else.
Restaurant did not take life-threatening food allergy seriously. Went with my girlfriend who mentioned off the top that she has a very serious nut allergy, and were then given a dessert that contained pistachios (luckily she caught it before eating). When we spoke with the manager, he took off a bottle of wine only because it seemed like you two were having fun, an extremely unprofessional response considering the gravity of the restaurants mistake. The waitress treated us well throughout the meal, but the reaction after such a mistake from the restaurant is just comical.
I had come to this restaurant years ago and fell in love with it because it is so beautiful and such a romantic little spot tucked away on Barrow street in the West Village. The menu is American with European influences. Are used to really like this restaurant because it has a very romantic ambience, with a lot of taper candles, soft candlelight lighting, a pretty outdoor space that you can see through the beautiful windows, and a lot of roses. However, when I recently went back to this restaurant, I found the food has become subpar. The restaurant has prefixes with a starter, I mean, and a dessert, for a prefix price of around $190 a person. It is very pricey for what it is. The food was not good at all. I had the octopus, which they burned, and they served it in what can be described as ketchup sauce. The beef Wellington that I ordered was really large and greasy, and under the puff pastry layer, I think they added cheese, which is not tradition. I had also ordered a hell of it that was good and the only redeeming thing about the meal. The staff is friendly, but unfortunately the food and price does not make up for it.
The food here is really poor quality. we ordered a variety of dishes fish/scallop/beef/desserts but none of them were really good. compared to other places in west village wld be considered bad. the interior is interesting or cringy depending on ur taste. service is so so. wld not recommend.
Food Poisoning! I had the “Organic Scottish Salmon” as did my wife. We thought it had an unusual smell and taste but figured it was just because it was prepared differently than other salmon we’ve had. When we got home we started having stomach cramps, and by 3am we were both extremely ill. I had to take her to the hospital while I was still throwing up. I drove her, bucket in hand, because her cramps were very intense! We are luckily doing okay now, but obviously extremely distraught by the entire experience. Be warned.
We were party of two. I’ve visited at 9:30 at the last day of 2018. The atmosphere was great with a beautiful tree, lights, and well-dressed people. They had only one menu for that day, it was 195 dollars per person. 3 courses, 1 entree, and one desert menu. The foods were good, but for me, I am not good at eating rare steak, but they didn’t ask me how much I wanted the steak to cook. I got the almost bloody steak which was not warm, but I didn’t ask them to cook it more. Service was not bad. I recommend this place for mood, especially an anniversary or a special day.
Terrible service. Terrible Management. Terrible communication. Restaurant had its heyday...now tired and old...not worth the trip for food or hospitality. Tried to force us to follow house rules rather than allow us to spend 400 plus dollars on an experience when the restaurant was not full. We went elsewhere, they gladly accepted our money and we had a great meal.
Terrible bartender. Unprofessional. Obnoxious. If you see Ethan at the bar dont expect good service. He definitely doesnt match the upscale vibe and price point of the place! Was planning to have dinner there, but because of Ethan will pass and spend money somehwere else.Very disappointing.
Food is good, especially the Beef Wellington. But the service is very disappointed. I told them in advance by phone that the day we came was my girlfriend’s birthday and hoped them could help prepare some special thing, like put name on menu or write a happy birthday on dessert. They accepted. But, nothing happened, they totally forgot! It’s not acceptable for a restaurant advertised itself as most romantic restaurant in NYC.
The atmosphere is very pretty inside and the staff was very friendly. They sent out special birthday plates at the end of the meal which was very nice. The food was good, but some entrees were much better than others. I love the desserts! Large portion sizes, no one was hungry when we left. Id recommend it for couples or small parties because it can be quiet in the dining room.
An okay experience overall, but nothing as spectacular as I had hoped for.I reserved 2.5 weeks in advance, noted details about where I want to be seated (main dining room, ground floor) on the website & directly via phone to the restaurant twice. Yet when we arrived, was taken to the hidden dark and gloomy corner upstairs with no view whatsoever, which the hostess claimed was “the best spot of the house”. We were granted a table downstairs, which was fine, but it shouldn’t have been that difficult for a fine dining restaurant. The request for my wife’s birthday decoration on the dessert also had to be reminded multiple times despite the reservation details & all the calls. It should have been much much smoother, more careful and attentive for a place prided on its romantic setting for special occassions. The food was generally good but again missing that “wow” factor. The Wagyu & Beef Wellington were the highlights.
Octopus was delicious, trout was ok. Chocolate souffle was extraordinary. Service was impecable, nothing better in New York as far as Ive seen, kind and gentle and not all over the place as many other restaurants. Romantic and quite atmosphere which was perfect for long conversation without being kicked out after dinner. Definitely will come back. The fifth star Im reserving it for next time as I was expecting a bit of more sauce and yummy trout that what I got.
Ranked one of the most romantic restaurants in NYC. It is grand. Just right for a romantic dinner, special occasion...or impressing your date.Maison-like atmosphere, oversized chandeliers, candlelight, white table clothes, life piano music... voila!Classic French menu.
Disappointing. On first appearance this place looks great and the first floor dining area is atmospheric. In terms of service and quality of food, these just didnt stand up to justify the price. I had grilled octopus, which was overcooked. Three in my party had Beef Wellington and the presentation was inconsistent. Chocolate soufflés was slightly over cooked. Overall the place has aspirations of fine dining (with the prices that go along with it) but the execution is not there.
One of the best fine dining at NYC. Very romantic atmosphere, very friendly service. In addition, they are probably the only place that offers beef Wellington at NYC. Such a great experience having a dinner here. Will definitely come again and recommend to all my friends!
It was a romantic dinner had at this restaurant for my 13th anniversary. We had the 7 course tasting menu w/wine pairings and EVERYTHING was delicious. Mmm mmm! We were socially distanced from other guest. There was hand sanitizers on each table. The staff was very warm and professional. Would definitely return. (Sorry only got 1 good pic, hubby has the rest)
I was in shock when I saw the entrance, it was so ugly and disappointing. The restaurant was REALLY DARK (it was 7:00PM) and looked nothing like what was shown on the website. We sat by the garden window & couldn’t hear any live piano music because it was so far away.Food was okay. The highlights for me were the side dish (truffle mashed potato) & dessert (pistachio ice cream parfait) - none of the main dishes (scallop & duck) were memorable unfortunately. The staff was attentive but the old hostess was not genuine, didn’t look happy, a bit rude & shoved me to the dark corner upstairs with no view at first even when we had requested to be seated downstairs in advance multiple times.
Beautiful beautiful place. Theres a pianist playing romantic, classical tunes. The windows peak into a serene garden, a very unexpected find in New York. The service was great, food tasty and refined. Definitely one of the most romantic places to have a meal in New York.
Ridiculously romantic, this restaurant absolutely is. I have only been three times for the Christmas dinner, where I found the service to be a bit slow (though friendly) and the food a bit heavy, but the experience of being here is certainly worth a meal if one enjoys dining in special places.
We chose this restaurant based on the reviews from Opentable, and it exceeded my expectations. The bar area is both inviting and comfortable for a before-dinner cocktail. Once seated, you quickly discover the charm this restaurant has to offer. For dinner, I recommend the rack of lamb. They have numerous side choices, and we have yet to be disappointed. I would suggest the baked chocolate souffle along with port to finish off the evening.
There are only tasting menu or prefix. So we pick prefix. The potion is a bit extra for us. I like the lamb chop very much. The octopus is disappointing, other are all good. I like my cocktail Couple damour is perfect for me. In general, its a romantic and good restaurant.
Beautiful atmosphere, food was delicious and fresh. Service was attentive and courteous. Crowd was significantly underdressed and young in my opinion with a lack of table manners. My only complaint is there should be a dress code for all diners to maintain a classy setting. I was horrified that a young girl next to us was wearing sneakers! Highly recommend for the food especially a fantastic beef Wellington and a dreamy chocolate souffle. Building is classic and romantic. Will be returning!
I did a Jazz brunch here. It was such a nice event. The atmosphere is beautiful!! Music was nice and staff very attentive. The only issue I had was finding the place, the name of the venue was not visible anywhere. Myself and others walked right past it several times before realizing where it was. However. Once inside, I had such a wonderful time.
The place is indeed very beautiful and romantic, but the food is really blend and boring. It would be stupid to pay that much for a tasting menu that you will never remember or in a bad way: nothing creative here and the food is completely average. Pay a bit more and go taste grande cuisine at a michelin star restaurant. Tourist spot to avoid
We had an awful experience tonight. My friends were celebrating their marriage and they called the restaurant couple weeks before to confirm to have window seats on the first floor. They got the answer as yes. When we arrived the reception people directly asked us to go to second floor and we were told all window seats are for party of two. We saw there are two empty tables for four but they refused to seat us by saying they tried their best but those tables are for other people.Based on my experience the reception should make the arrangement once they got the reservation, especially when they promised to provide seats for special occasions. And they did not provide us other options other than telling us we can wait for 40mins and the four people (they are Asian) at the entrance can finish their dinner and we can be seated there. Why there? Why not other seats? How can you know they will finish whoin 40mins but other non-Asians can’t?When we got seated on the second floor it is like an Asian community, no matter it is party of 2 or 4. It feels normal and abnormal. I realized their lies: for those empty seats(at least 5-6 tables) on the first floor, they are not for any of us. They are for someone who ‘deserves’ to have them for the restaurants, but not a normal party of clients who called weeks before to confirm their reservation for a celebration night for marriage registration. And the food was unexpectedly bad. The appetizers and desserts are okay, but not the main courses. I must say the servers are nice, we have to return the Halibut cuz it tastes not fresh. They changed that course for us immediately upon our request. Before I saw the pictures on the reviews I almost forgot usually we should get a word like ‘congratulations’ coming with dessert for celebrating the special occasion in a restaurant. We did not get anything.
Sadly, One if by Land, Two if by Sea did not live up to its expectation. Their 5 course meal had many points of disappointment. The beef wellington was cooked by an amateur and the lobster tasted like rubber. I had to spit it out. This was disappointing, since I had to pay over $600 dollars to puke in my mouth.Whats worse, is my girlfriend, who is not of European descent, was left in tears, as the servers treated her differently. One if by Land, Two by Sea represents the America of the past. If you dont believe in this, then save your money and taste buds and find somewhere else.
A place divorced from the hustle of New York, here you enter an environment designed with the purpose of making you remember the first time you realized you loved your significant other. The fact that the food and drinks are likewise delicious only furthers the mood. Go- you will not be disappointed.
Visited on 10/23/21 and from the reservation forward my experience was poor. We had called a couple weeks earlier to request an earlier time because they gave us a 930pm reservation. When I called they said they had a party and would not be able to accommodate us. I told them we made a reservation weeks prior. was put on hold and my reservation was verified and I was told the “party” was for earlier in the day. Fast forward to this weekend, we arrive and get seated after a not so warm welcome by the hostess. Once we go to order we are told by the waiter that the 7 course menu option was not available because it ended at 930pm. I was disappointed since this was never relayed to us. Nonetheless my wife and I both ordered the beef Wellington which was okay. I also did not feel the atmosphere was very romantic and our waiter was fairly monotone. On top of that it was confusing to locate because I did not see any sign on the outside. For us this was a dinner to celebrate our anniversary and unfortunately for the price it was subpar.
Absolutely fantastic food and impeccable service. Especially with how difficult things are in the service industry at the moment with staffing shortages, the seamless care their entire staff took was wonderful. Im honestly not sure how they pulled everything off in this environment, but keeping doing whatever it is youre doing! Exceeded my expectations in every way, the rare example of the food tasting even better than the menu sounds. Highly highly recommend.
This place was amazing. Was the best dinner that we’ve had. The service was amazing. The drinks delicious. The chefs tasting menu was beyond anything We’ve ever had. Loved it so much. Was a special night for us and they were so generous to surprise us with a congratulation final plate. ❤️ you guys made our evening magical and top our special day off!!! Thank you all so much!!!
Such a romantic atmosphere lit by candlelight! The food was delicious and the service was even better. The staff was absolutely impeccable with the level of attentiveness without being overbearing. The wine, cocktails, and coffees were also wonderful. Highly recommend for a date night!
I had my wedding ceremony and reception here June 25th, AMAZING!!! Lisa helped us out with everything. Our servers were so friendly and kind. We had Beef Wellington, Lamb and Lobster as the options in our menu. Delicious desserts, and good portions. We received a lot of compliments from our guests. They are very professional, from the pianist to the bartender and the chef. Do not hesitate about this beautiful restaurant, they did a great job in our big day. Thanks guys!!!
Expectations were high of this “romantic “ place. Pretty disappointed. Noisy, cramped space, mediocre food, foie gras was served cold - yak. Service is okay but very limited. Staff seemed overwhelmed possibly due to lack of servers and busboys. Bartenders seemed stressed out and unfriendly. If you don’t specify a location of the table at the time of reservation you may end up sitting next to the stairs ( literally you can lean on it). Will I come back - no. Would I recommend to anyone - no.
Fabulous place to celebrate 🎉🥂 🎁 or start something 💍🎉.We had the eight (8) course tasting menu, we sat near the garden (inside, because it was cold outside....). Also, why have seven (7) when you can have 8?Everything was delicious! They served among many delicious bites: scallop, seared fois gras, duck tagliatelle, beef Wellington, cheese tasting and chocolate souffle. Please note, there were three (3) marriage proposals in our section. The maitre d said that there were six (6) proposals that night. Be prepared to get on one knee and produce a ring....Service was pretty good.*****We returned got our anniversary. Another great dinner!
Great ambiance for a romantic dinner or drinks with two fireplaces! They usually have a pianist as well who plays softly in the background adding the the warm cozy feeling! Im sharing a short video clip of the pianist and a warming fire in the outer fireplace and another one of the fireplace.
Sure the dim, glowing, golden decor is the most elegant and charming youll ever see at a NYC restaurant. Sure its been rated time and again as the most romantic restaurant in NYC. Sure the live pianist belts out the softest, sweetest, classiest chords that serve as an ever-present floating backdrop that decorates your inebriated bar conversations. Sure the food is a one of a kind culinary experience.Yes, all of this is true. Yet, it is none of this that truly makes this restaurant stand out. The true gem of this restaurant is hostess Maria Margilaj. From the moment we entered, Marias sole intent was obvious - it was to ensure that we, her guests, had the best night of our lives. Right from the start, Maria inquired about the pronunciation of my last name. She wanted to get it right, she said. As she walked us further into the restaurant, she offered her opinion about the best available tables. She let us know which tables offered the best views and which might have heavy traffic around it. We appreciated her honesty. It was her attention to this kind of detail and her genuine interest in making sure we had a great time that really made our night special. When we were ready to leave, Maria asked us about our experience. We told her it was wonderful. At this point, we realized Maria is part of the family that owns this beautiful restaurant. We talked some more and she suggested we have a drink at the bar before we leave. Drinks were on her, she said. We must have spent another hour at the bar in conversation with Maria. She was the most gracious, most amicable, humble person we’ve ever met. She regaled us with her many stories about the restaurant, its rich 50 year old history, and its interesting, sometimes quirky clients. We thoroughly enjoyed her company and will be back again when we’re in the area.
Took my mom here for Mothers Day and had a fantastic time. We went mainly for the atmosphere but the food was equally amazing. The Mothers Day menu was perfect but of course we had to add a supplement of their beef wellington that they are famous for. Absolutely delicious! Aside from the great food and atmosphere, the highlight of it all was the really kind waitress (I forgot her name, something with an O I think and from Dominican Republic). She was so friendly and made my mom feel really special. Thank you, thank you, thank you! We will definitely be back.
Not sure why this spot is designated one of the most romantic...it’s nothing more than a dark bar. The food was mediocre and the price was high for the quality. The service was lacking as well. I was served the wrong dish and my beef Wellington wasn’t even close to being done to my liking. It was soggy and tasteless. I’ve had better beef from low end restaurants. I wouldn’t go back. We went for our 10th anniversary and they brought out a tiny cookie on a plate. Don’t bother w this restaurant, it’s 110% over hyped. Those saying the food is spectacular obviously haven’t had decent food.
The resturant has a good ambience, service is good but it ends there. If you are looking for a romantic evening , but food is not high on the list, this could be the place for you. Food is very mediocre, definitely not worth the price tag. Bread service was bad, the bread was dry and cold, regular butter, nothing special. I got the lentil soup for my first course, even quick service restaurants have better soup than that. Main course was lamb shank, and that was the saving grace for the whole meal. The Lamb was very tender, the braising was done perfectly, and the flavor was good. The sides of Truffle mashed potatoes was very medicore. The dessert was okay, i got creme brule. I guess going into the restaurant my expectations were very high. The food is definitely not woth the price tag it comes with.
Went there for my fiancé and me 7th anniversary, gave them a note about it, nobody ever said anything sweet or mentioned it. The servers are not smiling and clearly don’t know their menu. ( They would announce the dish like : Tartare from the testing menu! Fish from the testing menu! Ect ) LOL!!! The testing menu is ok even if nothing exceptional, would expect way better for a fine dining. The inside is truly romantic tho but we wouldn’t recommend this place if you’re in the mood for elegant food experience. ( My now fiancé was about to do his proposal there and he was so upset that he had to wait to get me somewhere after to do the big jump… ) Merci!
Very romantic, good classic food, old school super professional waiter. So here is why I took off two stars (should I have taken off three 🤷♂️): they put us on the second floor. Out of 10 tables we were the only non Asian couple. The bottom floor was all Wasps. This is probably due to our unusual family names. We have np with our Immigrant status but it was obvious and weird. If Larry david was here he would say something, we are not at his level (obviously) so we are just mentioning it in this Google review
This place has two floors, and on the 2nd floor you can hear the music and have a more intimate setting for your meal. The food is great if you are into small but beautiful food plate presentations. The only reason I didnt give it a 5 out of 5 is because it seemed a little crowded up top. Try the foie gras and you will not be disappointed.
I’m eating here as I’m writing this review. Second time being here 5 years apart to celebrate my anniversary. Nothing has changed. Classic service at its best, and food was over the top. People complain about the portion but don’t appreciate the flavor and work put into the dishes. I’m sipping my old fashioned and eating this beef Wellington in class.
1000% OVER HYPED! This was one of the WORST EXPERIENCES in my life! The service was horrendous, it took almost 4 hrs to serve 3 course meals that are on the fixed menu. I dont know how it took so long to get the meals out. OVER PRICED food and the food was a disappointment. From the reviews weve read on here we had high hopes but that was crushed We had a party of 5-10 people and 50% of us was nauseous after eating. We had one of our family members throw up a few times in the bathroom before leaving the restaurant (we didnt want to make any scene). The food was mediocre and some dishes were not made as ordered. We had to send back dishes for being to raw. There was a coconut Halibut on the menu and they over cooked it; it was dry, hard and tastless. The Octopus was salty and almost inedible. Definitely will not be back, consider yourselves warned.
The name of this restaurant should be: Anniversary Factory. The dim lights, romantic atmosphere, the tables for two make the location on point for celebrating something with someone. The menu is three courses for 109 $ / appetizer / main / dessert. The beef Wellington was really good and the service really amiable.
It was okay. Not worth the money. Beef wellington is outstanding, though everything else was just okay and its not that filling. Sides are tiny and $16. We had to get 4 for the 4 of us and Id say overall left hungry. On top of that, they made a mistake and overtipped themselves, which I only caught by chance to get a refund. Much better values for same or less money.
Had dinner here for my 10 year anniversary. I was looking for a romantic NYC experience, and they more than exceeded my expectations! The ambience, food, drinks and service was all absolutely amazing and I have nothing but good to say. Thanks for making this special evening so wonderful!
I made a reservation here for my anniversary weeks ago, requesting a nice table for this event. When we walked in the maitre d/ hostess didnt even great us until I said hello and asked for our table. After looking us up and down, they took us upstairs to the most crowded part of the restaurant with the most cramped tables and sat us right next to a service corner where we could be constantly bumped into. When I asked for a more comfortable citing that it was our anniversary they only offered a more cramped table between two other parties. Their downstairs and main section of the restaurant is less crowded with more romantic tables. We walked out nobody said anything. On our way out we saw some available nicely appointed tables in the downstairs section Its really sad Ive dreamed for years of celebrating here. I guess they only cater to certain types of clientele.
Great ambiance and decent food, but poor service. There was one server for the entire restaurant (and a slew of busboys) who did the bare minimum– just showed up to write down your order, no greetings, explanations or questions, and never came back to see if we needed anything. Also worth noting that there is no way they are following Covid capacity limits– tables were elbow to elbow like old NYC.
Had a lovely dinner there with my husband. Amazing atmosphere, very romantic, and lovely service. Excellent wine too, but the food was unfortunately not the best, for a Prix fixe of $110 pp (excl. Taxes and tips). I had the beef wellington (which was really really good, the only good main meal we had), and the giant crab salad (with super cold crab meat, terrible). And my husband had scallops (which he described as rubbery) and their special rib eye steak (which I tried and it was well cooked but it was kind of flavourless). What we both loved was the créme brûlée, it was so good! Overal, this was a special occasion and it was ok, but we wouldnt come back
This is a place to go for a black tie dinner. Menus are prearranged, you can pick from the lot, I personally got scallops, beef wellington and a chocolate soufe. A good arrange of exotic cocktails, wines, beers and spirits. Its spendy, over $300 for a dinner of two easily, but its an experience for sure!
Many years ago, in 2005, my husband and I had just met. Long story short, we were going to meet up in NYC after I had recovered from a serious illness in England. He asked me to choose where to go on one night and he would choose for the other. We both ended up choosing this restaurant because it looked so romantic. It was and has remained the best restaurant and our favorite for our 15 years of marriage. You cant do better than One If By Land. Its superb!
The food was absolutely amazing and done to perfection. My husband took me here to celebrate my 30th birthday and the entire experience was incredible. The staff was very attentive and made us feel special. I had the beef Wellington and I have never had anything better. My husband got the duck and it was cooked to perfection. This place is pricey, but it is worth every penny.
Food was very subpar for such a nice restaurant. Ordered the pri fix 3 course. Had the beef welington and lamb. beef was flavorless the only good thing was the pastry, lamb was a little on the dry side. Truffle mash was decent but wasnt wow. The pineapple cake and cappuccino mouse was the highlight. For $320 for two ppl definitely wasnt cheap.
The restaurant was beautiful and romantic. At the same time, the EXTREMELY pricy menu was unimpressive, and the food was mediocre at best. Some of the dishes were so bad that we simply couldnt finish them (despite the insane price). The servers interrupted our conversations multiple times to serve water and the cocktails were way too sweet.I might come again for a glass of wine at the upfront lounge, but thats about it.
A lovely restaurant with incredible food. Very romantic setting for the perfect NYC vacation date night. The beef Wellington was just perfect. I would have given this 5 stars had I felt the service been as good as the food. Considering we spent $450 usd I felt the service was very cold, although I will add that my husband was very happy with the service. Also, we were able to walk to friends building after the meal which was great for me as a huge fan of the show :)
Stumbled upon this place on a Sunday night (hot girls in the front) with my old college roommate and the vibe was insane. Live piano music!? Old vintage chandeliers?! Never seen a spot like this in the city. The drinks were great and had some good food at the bar. It was a little pricey but worth it. The staff also seemed really nice there. All around a great experience and we had a great time catching up. Highly recommended and will be back.
My boyfriend and I walked into an empty restaurant. Finally the bartender welcomed us to have a drink before dinner. I guess it was empty because it was a Sunday night, this raised red flags since we are from the city and dine out frequently. The only good service here was from the bartender and the delicious drinks. The ambience is also unique. We tried to enjoy our dinner here but the food was bland and the service was really terrible. The waitress barely made her way to our table to check on how we liked the food/drinks. She was only their to take our order. When our hefty bill was presented (without asking for it) we asked to speak to a manager. She said she was “one of the managers covering him”(?) and walked away. This is not acceptable for a place that calls itself a fine dining restaurant. I don’t recommend this place to anyone and I’ll never come back. Don’t bother trying to contact other management either, this restaurant will ignore your calls.NOT RECOMMENDED!!
Came here for brunch with another couple and I was not prepared for the upscale atmosphere. Its a beautiful building on a quiet West Village street. The service and interior are very nice and this particular Sunday there was a jazz piano player tinkling in the background (not sure if this is a permanent fixture). The bar has a seating area and a big fireplace and the main dining room is very old world classic as well. 5 stars for decor and ambiance. 4 stars for the food. The brunch menu was pretty standard, upscale French brunch fare. I had a delicious steak and egg dish. The portion would have been too small if they didnt stock you up on a basket of pastries prior to ordering.Boring drinks, well prepared food, and nice surroundings. I noticed a very prettily decorated (lights, lots of clematis) outdoor patio as well. This isnt my usual brunch choice, I prefer more laid back and not white table cloth, but it was a nice change and would be good for visiting relatives or something similar.
It was packed for a Saturday night. The greeting and the Drinks were superb.. most dishes were good but the fish was so soggy... the manager was awkward he was just standing around and never came by after we asked the waitress more than once. We were seated in the attic upstairs... in the back... so that took away from the experience. I guess the food was just ok but the service at the table was not pleasant At all. It seemed like she did not want to be there. Not worth the price tag... better off spending this money at a Michelin not here.
Wonderful historical restaurant. A beautiful charming place to eat with excellent service. We made reservations for Sunday bunch on Mothers day. Definitely a place to celebrate a special occasion. The food was elegant & favor full. (My 16 year old nephew was still hungry after the 5 course brunch)
This is unacceptable. We were very very disappointed. Since we live inthe city we go out for dinners often and have never been treated likethis before! The manager of this place needs to know what happened tothe customers who have been in this place before. And mostimportantly, the valued customers need to know and be treated betterthan we were treated this time, horrible experience! My husband hadcalled the restaurant and made a reservation 3 weeks prior to ourFirst wedding anniversary dinner - our anniversary dinner was onNovember 1st. I called them 3 days prior myself and re-confirmed thatwe had a table at 6 pm November 1st, and kindly asked the person whowas with me on the phone to make sure that they knew it was our Firstwedding anniversary. She was pleasant and she said - Yes, we willmake sure that you will have a beautiful setup and table, etc . Iwas so excited and happy that we were going to this beautiful placeand we would enjoy our anniversary dinner. As you can imagine, wedressed up and came there at 5:45pm to make sure that we were on time. When we came inside nobody was there; the bartender was at the barthere and was the only one . While waiting for someone to come andhelp us, i looked at the restaurant and there was a party. I sawroses on the floor and said to my husband,it seems that they have aparty today - and i thought and said to myself, Hmm, interesting, where will they seat us knowing that there is only one sitting area inthis restaurant. Finally the host came and asked how can i help ,and my husband said that we have a reservation at 6 pm and asked thehost if there was a party. The host simply said Yes and follow me . I said ok to myself and followed the host . He brought us up to thesecond floor , I never knew that there was a second floor in thisplace. It was a small and dark room, with a disgusting smell (especially for those who have never smoked),and he seated us in the corner. Imagine two ofus treated very badly; they knew that we had made the reservation fora special occasion, and that it was not a random dinner but even ifwere just a dinner that still would be no excuse -- who wants to sitin a smelly and dark room?! You dont want to have your First weddinganniversary dinner in a kind cigar room.First of all, they never called us to tell us that there would be aparty on November 1st and that the restaurant would be occupied bythem. Secondly, I called them 3 days prior to November 1st andre-confirmed. If anybody had told us that they would have a partythere, we would never have come there- first because of Covid-19 andsecond because there was no room for us to sit! But instead, it seemsthey badly wanted to make more money and never said anything; theyallowed us to come unknowingly to their place, seated in that roomand they ruined our night! The server came to our table and i was soupset, almost crying and frustrated - I said that we called this place3 weeks in advance, I called them to re-confirm and we got this tablein this room.. He said - i am sorry, I dont know anything . Yes, heprobably did not know anything but the point is - he is the host andnobody came to us and to explain anything or even to say sorry -they apparently just thought this was a normal attitude to treat theircustomers like this! This is NOT normal and they have to know how totreat every single person!! We left the One if by land, Two if by seawithin 8 minutes with so many disappointments. We will never come tothis place again and will never recommend this place to any of myfriends! Even though a year ago I recommended this place to my bestfriend and her husband - but after this terrible experience, I willnever ever recommend this place again!Thankfully we have so many different beautiful restaurants in thecity. And we were lucky to make another reservation in a differentrestaurant right away (thank God it was Sunday and it was stillearly). They made our dinner unforgettable!
It is a very romantic restaurant in a historic older home. We had the 7-course meal, it looked beautiful and most of the dishes were tasty. If you want to dine for a time in a romantic atmosphere I recommend this restaurant. They gave decent size portions. The only dish that was a little ordinary was the beef wellington. I would pick another main dish, other than that the food was excellent.
Quite honestly, if I could give them a negative rating I would. My rating is more for how they run the place and not for the food. Lets get the positives out of the way first.Positive - Food - Beef Wellington was amazing, Foie Gras was good, Lamb Shank was ok at best and dessert was pretty decent.Positive - Ambiance - Pretty cozy place, had live piano playing with roses and candles at the table. While all of that is good, I am not really sure why they are regarded one of the most romantic restaurants, quite honestly, I have been to many others which I would deem to be far more romantic.Negative - First the Bad - The waiters forgot we were seated at a table for nearly 10 min, they didn’t give us menus, light the candle at the table, no water. I had to go remind them when they were at another table and then they apologized and got things going. I will say that once they realized their mistake the service did take place at a brisk pace.Negative - Now the Horrible - When I had made the reservations, the person had told me they were operating at 25% capacity and doing socially distanced tables. I had called again a few days later to request a specific table and again I was told they are operating 25% capacity and hence can’t guarantee a specific table (which is fair). However when we arrived it was a complete nightmare, the restaurant was operating at 100% capacity and there was “ZERO SOCIAL DISTANCING”. They “DID NOT EVEN CHECK TEMPERATURES” before seating customers. Once we were seated, I was really uncomfortable sitting really close to other customers. I had called the waiter and asked how come they are not operating at 25% capacity and didn’t check temperatures before letting customers in. He told me that he just works here and does not know and will call the manager. The manager came by 2 minutes later, he had a mask on but that did not cover his nose and only covered his mouth and I had expressed my concern and he simply shrugged his shoulders like it is what it is and they are busy. He did offer to take us upstairs to another area which was lot less crowded and we were able to find a table in the corner of the room with no other customers nearby and we decided to move there for our dinner.I cannot understand how an establishment that charges $100+ for a 3 course meal can’t afford to buy a $20’ish thermometer to check customers temperature before letting them in. Every other place I have been to does that. It is completely unacceptable. In conclusion, I understand we all have to make a living and the pandemic has wrecked havoc in all our lives. But if you are operating an establishment you will have to ensure your customers safety. They care about making a quick buck but don’t care about their customers safety. I WILL NEVER EVER RETURN TO THIS PLACE & I plan to search online to see how I can report their practice to the authorities. To anyone that reads this I will say “AVOID THIS PLACE COMPLETELY TILL THE PANDEMIC IS OVER”.
We waited 50 minutes for a reservation because they overbooked. I wouldn’t use open table here, they don’t seem like they know how to use it properly.Even though it was clearly their issue, they seemed mad at us for making an online reservation last minute. A reservation they screwed up by offering. Was excited to try this place, and I’m pretty low maintenance, but they were consistently unprofessional to the point we left.
Beautiful building & decor. Warm & intimate setting, feels outside of the city... all of the ambiance = 5 stars. Food was average & not very thoughtful. We received the wrong menu, originally thinking there was an a la carte option. Prix fixed was $98 and the choices were somewhat old fashioned. I wanted to love it, but it just fell flat. Food was over-seasoned to compensate for flavor. Tuna entree was barely edible. Crowd was regulars, special occasion dinners & some dates. Will come back for a cocktail and atmosphere. Dont go for the food. Also had to wait 40 minutes for our table, but thankfully the fire & piano was lovely.
I went there this past weekend with my husband for our one year anniversary dinner, prior to a Broadway show. We are foodies and go to a different restaurant each weekend for date night. I had such high expectations and found this restaurant to be just average. Ive had better experiences and food elsewhere.1) Waited 15 minutes for menus. It was 5:45PM and the restaurant only had a few patrons (so I dont understand the wait).2) The service was just ok. Asked for a couple of extra items which didnt show up (butter, napkin).3) The atmosphere was romantic and charming. The jazz musician was good and not too loud. This was my favorite part of the experience.4) The food was good but not above average or outstanding. I had the scallops for starters and the lobster for the main course. Again the food was good but Ive had much better in this price range. For example, we went to the Four Seasons Restaurant and everything was top notch. I wished I wouldve picked another restaurant for such a momentous occasion. I wouldnt go back to this restaurant nor recommend it to friends.
We came for a Christmas / wedding anniversary celebration with some family. We had an incredible time. The kitchen gave us a free dessert with Happy Anniversary written on the plate, the wait staff never left us wanting for anything and was incredibly pleasant to speak with, and the host welcomed us the second we walked through the doors. We all picked different items from the prix fixe menu and were elated with each bite of each dish. I had read that if you do not get a downstairs table, its not worth eating here. I find that very untrue. We sat in the quieter and more private upstairs area and had just as lovely a time. Love this place and hope to return!
My server was ok for the first 10 minutes dining in and barely saw him after that... The busboy did a better job at paying attention to me... Keep in mind it’s $109 for the 3 course meal each person ! Wouldn’t come back again I really like a server who his jolly and happy with his customers
Came here for a wonderful date. While we were there, we witnessed a proposal (she said yes)! Everything about this venue is flawless. The food is incredible! (My date described it as real tasty.) The seared scallops melt in your mouth and Ive never seen such a perfect sunny-side-up quails egg!
This is the the fourth time my wife and I have gone to One If By Land and once again it did not disappoint. The service is excellent and the food is, well, amazing. This restaurant has a quiet, intimate atmosphere where you never feel rushed and there is no competition to be heard over the table next to yours. With two fireplaces and an extensive wine list there is a level of intimacy that is hard to match elsewhere in the city and you almost feel among close aquaintances instead of fellow diners. Ive read reviews where the writer has complained about the price so let me say this: Yes, compared to the plethora of mediocre, or worse, restaurants, this one costs more than most. With that said you get what you pay for which in this instance is culinary excellence, a high standard of hospitality and an unmatched atmosphere that is steeped in a part of American history well worth experiencing. Rob and Jenn.
The ambiance is great, a lot of history. If you book a table, ask to be seated downstairs. We were put upstairs, it was okay, but the real ambiance is downstairs. We were disappointed in the serving staff, maybe they tried to be polite or correct, but it came of as they were used to serving the queen and we were peasants not worthy of their service. When my partner asked if he could have two entrees (he really liked two he saw) instead of a dessert (he does not like sweets) two servers told us it had to be checked with the chef first, they made a big deal out of it, like we were asking for something ridiculous. And the answer was a cold hard no. When he asked if he could order the second entree as an extra, then that was fine. It mystified us a bit, but okay. Their knowledge of wine also left something to be desired. The food was okay though, the pianist very nice and we still had an enjoyable time, but lets say that the Michelin star restaurants we frequent in the Netherlands are better in service, wine and food by leaps and bounds for the same amount of money.
Beautiful ambiance. Small, intimate and cozy. They offered to let us have drinks in the armchairs by the fire place when we entered. The tables are by large windows revealing a lit-up garden. The food itself seemed very average for the price. My date did not like tuna she ordered -- strong mustard flavor -- but I didnt mind it so I traded her my bass which was quite good.
The service was nothing short of amazing. The food was flavorful and cooked to perfection. The waiter (bald Hispanic guy) made excellent recommendations and was a pleasure to work with. He went out of his way to make sure my girlfriend and I were taken care of on our very first anniversary. Beef Wellington is out of this world! Definitely recommending this place to friends and Ill be dining here again.
We have dinner her in Christmas Day and it really was fantastic. The restaurant was decked out amazingly, and the whole place had a really good buzz- noisy but comfortably so.Food was very impressive and not excessive. Wine list was excellent and both bottles we had were great. One criticism was that there was a 1/2 price menu for children, but this just meant the same food as adults at a lower price. Whilst this would be okay for older children, for the 3 year old we had, the menu was really too adventurous. Most young kids prefer plainer food- so we paid for a few rolls of bread and some ice cream (the adults all ate the left overs though so not a huge issue). This is not really anything negative- especially because this isnt really a kids restaurant and they were really very nice to us all.Anyway- highly recommended.
I heard this was rated the most romantic restaurant in NYC and apparently the food was described as amazing, so I came here with high expectations. Well, it surpassed my expectations completely! The ambiance was great - very dark, candle lit, and a view of a private yard full of plants. There is a man playing live piano in the front. Perfect place for a romantic date, but be careful, because it is VERY expensive. There wasnt really a lot to choose from on the menu, but the dishes themselves are exotic and have a lot of surprising ingredients that go well together. The menu is fixe prix, so you get an appetizer and dessert as well. Spring salad was the best salad I ever had, hands down.Totally loved it.
Beautiful restaurant and amazing food. I had the salmon and I admit I have never tasted a salmon with such a delicious taste. The only reason why Im giving them 4 starts is because my boyfriend proposed to me at this place and one of the waiters took a film and pictures of us and stated they will email them or text it to us, but never did. I would of rather them not to take pics or promise something that they wont do.Overall the chef was on point.
What an utter disappointment..!!I had booked a table 2 months in advance, as we were travelling to NYC from Europe and I wanted to surprise my boyfriend with an amazing experience for his 25th birthday. I was well aware that the place was quite pricy, but I considered it completely worth it, as the quality of the food and the romantic setting should be outstanding.Well let´s just say. It wasnt.Starting with the food:It looked quite nice, but the taste was completely underwhelming. For instance the starter, Blini with Russian caviar. A dish that I love and have tried at many different places, also in way less fancy restaurants than this. Never has it tasted as terrible as this. Was not able to finish the dish. Moreover, the main dish, my boyfriend had the Beef Wellington and I, the Baked Cod, both dishes were bland. The chocolate suffle was of course tasting like chocolate, which is always a great thing, but it could also have been bought at a normal supermarket. Really nothing else than suffle and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The Service and Atmosphere:It looks nice inside, and it is quiet. However we were disappointed to see that there was actually no one else in the whole restaurant at 9 o clock. The atmosphere was therefore quite non-existent other than some music and some waiters, standing still in a corner. We also felt very rushed to leave by the staff. We still had wine in our glasses and would have loved to sit a little longer to talk, but the vibes of the awaiting staff made us decide to go earlier. All in all:I was so excited to visit this place. To have a culinary and romantic experience. I had read multiple reviews and as I saw the pictures of the great looks of the restaurants, I decided not to think of all the negative reviews. Leaving the restaurant I was quite sad, both for the how I had just spent over 300$ for something that was so underwhelming and disappointing, and also that I had looked so much forward to surprising my boyfriend, with something great. The restaurant was pretty. Other than that, the food was bland and not tasteful. There was not an amazing atmosphere, no other people in the restaurant and we were feeling rushed to leave by the waiters even though it was way before closing time.So if you are, like I was, considering to take your significant other to a night they wont forget, please, I will really just recommend you to not go here..!There are so many other places that for this price and even less, will offer you an outstandingly romantic setting, but also will serve you terrific food, great atmosphere, outstanding service and an experience for a lifetime!
My husband and I recently had our wedding ceremony and reception brunch for 100 guests at One if by Land. We cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Rosanne Martino, general manager, is an absolute superwoman and helped make the day run as smoothly as possible. It goes without saying that the food was to die for and our guests are still complementing it. We also asked the restaurant to make our cake for us and it was divine (chocolate cake with raspberry mousse--yum!). The jazz musicians were lovely, the staff was exceptionally helpful, and the ambiance cannot be found anywhere else. We are so happy that we chose to have our wedding here and we would highly recommend it for those who want a romantic, intimate wedding.
Never in a long time have I left a dining experience so utterly underwhelmed, disappointed & feeling robbed. For somewhere that charges $109 for 3 courses, this establishment really needs to up its game in terms of overall quality & service. For a supposedly high end restaurant in a prime West Village spot to be more than half empty on a Friday night, alarm bells were ringing when we were sat in the characterless upstairs area. We should’ve taken notice of this.Anyways, we were attended to by a very polite waitress who did an adequate job. Nothing outstanding and we certainly didn’t feel welcomed by the disinterested hostess sat at the door or the unhappy looking barman who was serving a basic gin and tonic (small pour) for $16. This whole place might look really pretty when one walks in, but it seriously lacks character or charm once your dining experience begins. The food was underwhelming at best. Starters were fair; the foie gras was cooked well but the tuna tartare tasted like it was from a supermarket chill cabinet & was served with scrappy pieces of thin toasted bread. The mains were adequate. My husband’s Beef Wellington was spoiled by the worst attempt at puff pastry. It was soggy and very thin. My duck was well cooked but certainly not medium rare as the waitress said it would come. The overpriced side of Brussels Sprouts came drowned in an odd mix of cheap honey & what tasted like sweet chili sauce from a local Chinese store. They also came late, halfway through our mains & after we asked for their whereabouts.Desserts were incredibly sub-par. A dry, plain tiramisu was barely edible & the deflated chocolate soufflé was clearly pre-prepped as it came out way too quick. One point was given for the waitress bringing out a birthday candle but the effort was ruined by the two tiny old cookies & insipid macaroons. We left incredibly disappointed - with not a single Thankyou or goodbye by the disinterested hostess - upon leaving.Avoid at all costs.
I am a native New Yorker and will keep to the directness of how we are known to be :)Food: Excellent! Its a 3- course prix fixe menu. I had the salmon and highly recommend it. Every course was great.Drinks: Excellent. Great wine.Space: Very elegant and romantic. The bar area is large and conducive to intimate conversation as well as mixing and mingling. The dining area is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion or romantic dinner. The tables are adorned with tapered candles, the room has a fire place, and bar area has a piano.Scene: Romantic. Great place to bring a date or impress your significant other. This place is always in high demand, so reservations are recommended.Crowd: Mostly couples. Date Night. Special occasions.Service: Great, very courteous & professional. However, a bit slow because of the volume maybe?
Beef Wellington was almost as good as my Dads - youll have to trust me when I say that means it is amazingly good.Went again for the jazz brunch, very enjoyable. Food was excellent. Service very attentive. There were one or two small things both times we went that werent at the level of service expected, but overall, both meals were excellent.
My husband and I went 11/07/2020 for our anniversary. The only problems that I had were my entree. I requested medium well and my beef Wellington arrived at our table rare (gross). They also misspelled anniversary. I would think for such an upscale, expensive restaurant they would have basic spelling skills.
A truly romantic venue. They never disappoint here. The staff is attentive, the food is scrumptious, and decor is just beautiful. You feel like you are walking into another era. The beef Wellington is obviously a must. Instagram worthy photo opps everywhere. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. Must experience at least once.
I had eaten here 10 years ago and vaguely remembered the gnocchi being some of the best Ive ever had. I dont know what happened or if my memory was wrong, but the butternut squash gnocchi were pretty gummy. The main of smoked sea bass was good but the smoked flavor was artificial tasting, accompanying corn chowder was very good. Excellent atmosphere in aaron burrs old carriage house. Very romantic. I would recommend it for special occasions if you value decor over food.
Took my girlfriend here for Valentine’s Day. Read online this place is supposed to be the “most romantic Restaurnat in NYC” I don’t know about all that, but it is a nice restaurant. We went feb 13th because sadly we both worked on Valentine’s Day, but this place changes the menu to a prefix menu for e week of Valentine’s Day and again since we went around Valentine’s Day we got the prefix menu. The cost per person was $150 with three course meal and a dessert. They food was good and the staff was great, the ambiance is pretty much why every one goes here. All the small fireplaces and darkness with roses on every table. Guess it was romantic. Can’t complain and if you have the money I would recommend you check it out around Valentine’s Day. Make reservations because they book fast around that time. Find facts, they have some sex stores near by to visit after and also a cool speak easy inside a Five Guys restaurant.
This place seemed like a locals spot. From entering to the table the staff was super accommodating and hospitable but the food was a disappointment. The portions are hefty and presentation gaudy but it did not compensate for the lackluster meals. Over priced is an understatement. We had an anniversary meal at the upstairs portion of the restaurant near the fireplace.
Supposedly very classy, but felt over dressed when got there. You cant even locate the restaurant properly. Ambience was very nice, piano was playing in the background. When we sat down they served dinner roll from deli next door most likely. Terrible way to start. They ran out of seared wagyu appetizer which was weird when you have pre fix limited menu items. Venison was really tough for medium and wasn’t seasoned properly. Worst risotto I’ve ever had. Food was below average not what anyone should pay so much money for. Service was very nice. This place is better as having few cocktails and enjoy the atmosphere rather than dinner.
We came back here for an anniversary and brought some friends that had never experienced a tasting menu. We were so excited to share this restaurant with them because we had had such a wonderful experience the first time we dined here in 2005. Unfortunately this visit did not go as well. The food was fantastic. There was no question about that. The duck dish we had was the big wow of the night. Our meal was delicious. Our service was not. We ordered the 9 course tasting (of which we only received 8) with the wine pairing. We asked our server to give us a few moments to enjoy our cocktails before starting the tasting. He did not. We were immediately served our first course. No wine. The entire meal continued in this way. We asked several times if it would be possible to get our wine pairing before the course. It happened only once. It was so disappointing. There is clearly a disconnect between those that are bringing out the food and the server. Our courses were never explained nor were any of the wines. There are so many incredible restaurants in NYC. I think that One if by Land might be leaning too far on the we are the most romantic rather than providing diners with, not only incredible food but service as well.
The aps were tasteless; the sirloin was gristly and flavorless other than its heavy coating of salt -- and even dessert was bad -- how do you mess up dessert (the apple on puff pastry)? The wine was a $12 bottle charged at $85. Completely overpriced for the quality of the food -- and at the end of the disappointing meal we saw the WARNING sign behind the hostess podium - that they were awaiting their grade from the health department. Was hoping for a magical evening, instead spent $400 for a dinner that was wasnt even mediocre.
I absolutely loved this restaurant! We were a party of 10 and the staff did not let us down. The attention was phenomenal. And most importantly the food could of not been more superb. I can not wait to come back. If you need to celebrate any special occasion this is the place to go.
Came here for drinks outside as NYC commences re-opening. The in-house cocktail i chose, which had berry and vodka, would have been better if served over ice but I asked the bartender to surprise me with the 2nd cocktail and it was phenomenal! Server was attentive. Cant wait to come back to try their food.
We had reservations at 8 pm and we arrived early (7:45pm our choice). We were told the table was to be ready 5 times and then explained the patrons before us was sitting/ chatting longer than expected, after they had paid for their meal.25 mins after reservation time, they made a make-shift table and stuck 6 people in a table for 4.After becoming irritated with the service and waiting until 8:35 without any drink or food order, I spoke with the manager and explained we were leaving. He said this was normal timing for the time and the table we were sitting was meant to be for 6 (way too small). If being late 25 minutes for a reservation is normal and seated in a table meant for 4 is the way they do things, I cant recommend this place. You cant charge $150 per person (with no tip, drink or taxes) and provide anything but A+ accommodation.I can assume, if you come here as a couple, it will be more accommodating, but with a larger party, stay away.I cant speak of the taste and quality of food, but the service and accommodations are below par.
Very romantic restaurant set in an old carriage house in New York City. The prixe fixe menu has a large choice of appetizer, main course, and dessert. The fluke and pork belly were both good. We tried the beef wellington (slight extra charge) and the lobster. Both were delicious. All of the desserts were super yummy. Service was excellent. The restaurant offers a regular menu. Try it at least once.
The food was delicious and I love a live pianist. I recommend the beef wellington. Also, I very much appreciate commitment to a theme and this place was packed with all sorts of Hamilton and Burr memorabilia. Unfortunately, we got one of the worst tables in the house even though it didnt appear to be that busy, so I spent the night staring at the bright screen on the POS system as the staff typed in orders.
The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. After reading some of the reviews on here I was expecting extremely small serving sizes, but was pleasantly surprised. Theyre the size of what people SHOULD be eating. If you want a value meal, a lot of food, for a little money, go to McDonalds. The food was absolutely delicious and the German Chocolate Cake was to die for.We went here for my birthday dinner, which also turned out to be when my boyfriend proposed. He had contacted the restaurant ahead of time to plan the proposal and they were super helpful to him as well as he told me later! If you are looking for a warm, welcoming, and romantic environment with delicious food I definitely recommend you go here, with or without an engagement :) If you are going as only a group of two, I do recommend asking to be seated on the second floor because its a bit quieter!
The combination of romantic ambiance and attentiveness is unparalleled. Every table has a vase with roses and a white candle. Chandeliers can be seen anywhere there is seating. There is always a live pianist that solidifies the romantic mood and fills the restaurant with familiar melodies. Lighting is slightly dim, but not dark. Artwork is prevalent. The staircase to the downstairs restrooms is in line with the theme. The presence of stained glass gives a nice touch. The decore, setting, and mood makes you feel as if you had been transported to a 19th century romance novel. Even the restaurant name itself is an allusion to poetry. The waiter was one of the most professional Ive had. He gave knowledgeable, detailed suggestions on menu items, checked on the table regularly, offered to take a picture of my girlfriend and me, and adjusted the room temperature when we were uncomfortable. The waiter also provided thoughtful conversation which was never excessive nor intrusive. The hostess, however, was a little cold before I informed her of my reservations. The food was generally good. The octopus tentacle was fantastic. It was served on a bed of greens and did not have that strong, undesirable smell and flavor of unwashed seafood. Instead, the octopus tentacle had a delicate flavor, and was just the right tenderness on the inside and just the right crispness on the outside. The Beef Wellington was good, but definitely overrated. Portions are small. This hole in the wall restaurant is easy to miss if walking on the street even though the interior is not small. In conclusion, One if by Land, Two if by Sea is expensive. This place earns 5 stars because you really have to search a long time to find a more romantic place to bring that special someone.
Good reviews made us pick this restaurant, but it’s overrated. It’s a lovely old building with history, sure. But I’m there for the food and they charge way too much for ‘okay’ food. We had starters of tuna and duck. The tuna was great big slabs on top of very flavourful seaweed - so much so that the seaweed overpowered the tuna and you didn’t really taste it. It came with 2 small pieces of tempura avocado that had way too much batter and was a soggy weird but nice tasting lump. It took us quite some time to recognise it as avocado. Overall, disappointing. The duck was similar - too much side flavours that detracted from the duck. If it wasn’t sitting on a weird bread thing, the duck would have tasted much better. The main courses, we had a ribeye and the wellington. The ribeye was dry in the middle, but otherwise great. The Wellington itself was over cooked but nice. I wouldn’t really rate it higher than ‘nice’. It came with green beans in a truffle oil - really strong on the fake truffle flavour that I dislike so I had to avoid that on the plate. I will say one thing: the dessert (we just had one mille fieulles) was great. All that said, I would’ve been fine if it was better value for money, but for the price they charged could’ve gone to far nicer places like clock tower or Perry st. And the noise volume and general busy feeling was way too loud. Felt more like a pub than a ‘romantic’ restaurant.

2022-02-13Beautiful and unique space, which is ideal for dates. The food was good, but a bit expensive. The Beef Wellington is the best Ive had in the city.Only the Valentines menu was available when we went, which cost $200 per person and consists of 4 courses. All of the food was good, but not good enough for the price tag in my opinion. The normal Prix Fixe and Tasting Menus are more affordable. Our service was good, and the servers were attentive, but the timing between each course was quite slow. Our server did recognize and apologize for this.

2021-12-20This is very sophisticated high end place with the history that goes back to 18th century. Perfect for romantic dinner or date night. To be honest I was there for dinner more than 10 years ago, but I visited them recently because they start to have jazz brunch. You have to book it in advance and you will be submerged into atmosphere of 30-40s of the last century. It was very pleasant and romantic the band the singer it was just amazing! As for the food please keep in mind that for the brunch you will have only prefix menu option without ability to choose or order something else. Oh! And jazz invitation includes one free drink.

2022-02-11Our experience was top notch in every regard. The setting and ambiance are very romantic and rustic, and each course was perfectly executed. The cuisine was traditional. The Beef Wellington was the standout; sublime! Perfect place for a date with the one you love.

2022-04-24Went here with my cousin yo celebrate her retirement. Its definitely more a couples restaurant as the setting is very romantic. Downstairs seemed more for all parties but we unfortunately were not able to sit there. Our waiter Jorge was absolutely amazing. Very attentive and gave great suggestions. The rest of the staff was also very friendly. I had the beef wellington which was delicious. Ill be honest, Im into the whole ghost phenomenon and was intrigued by the history of this restaurant. Apparently the staff has experienced many ghostly happenings. None for us, just a great meal with an incredible staff. Thank you!

2022-02-07Had an absolutely lovely evening celebrating an anniversary here. The live piano player is an elegant touch. The food was sensational, the service impeccable (thank you Tai), and the ambience cozy and romantic. It was a night out to remember for sure.

2022-06-26I’m really sorry that I visit this place. If I could go back in time I would have gone somewhere else. Environment is amazing, it’s true , it’s a romantic place. Service was okay. They have two type of menus. 3 and 7 courses. 135$ three courses and 175$ for the seven courses. We order the three courses. I had the scallops as entrée they were good but nothing from other world. The beef welington was okay. I mean , this is an expensive restaurant and doesn’t taste like it. Just avoid it if you don’t want to be disappointed.

2022-02-18The atmosphere is beautiful with candle lights and live piano. Service is also good, although a little overattentive at times (they tried to take away our plates before we had finished a few times). We got the 7 courses menu ($160). The food is generally good, but only some things are exceptional. I really liked the tuna sashimi and the single scallop. The fish and beef were good but nothing spectacular. What really disappointed is the cheese platter that reminds me of the box you get at the airport when your flight is delayed (see picture).Overall, it was enjoyable but I probably wont go back.

2021-12-12What a beautiful restaurant. They had a piano player when I dined here which really added to the experience. Our server was extremely knowledgeable and helpful with what to order. Try and get a table on the ground level or you will not be able to see much if you are upstairs. Food was excellent, great beef Wellington

2021-11-06Went here during my recent trip to the city, went for an anniversary dinner and it did not disappoint. The food was exceptional, the ambiance was definitely romantic and very warm. The service was great, and the extra touch of the dessert plate with the “Happy Anniversary “ was the cherry on top.Do yourself a favor, get the scallops and sweet risotto to end the night. Worth the price of admission
