This place gets 3 stars simply because I want to give the amazing chefs credit for the food they serve. Coming from the hospitality industry they could really do with some better customer service. I ordered online through the website, I was going to give them a 20% tip but the bartender on duty deducted that. I wanted to see how much the tip was going to be so I asked for a receipt to figure out the math since I still believe cash is king. Of course this should have already been placed on the bag for obvious reasons but because I asked for the receipt the bartender got annoyed that I made her walk back over to the register (25 feet away), I mean can you believe that I made her do something that was so hard?? When she came back over to me I said thank you to her and she walked away with an attitude yet again without any response to my thank you. We can blame this on the mask but I know I can still see a smile under a half covered face or an acknowledgement. This made the 20% tip dip down drastically. Advice to staff: always serve with a smile and good graces. Especially for something so small like asking for a receipt so I could have tipped you properly.
If you advocate for employees being treated well, dont eat here. There are plenty of better and more moral greek places in Astoria. Owners are pretty terrible to the staff and treat them like personal servants, having staff serve them and family as well as cleaning up after them without any compensation for the service pretty much daily. I worked here a few years ago out of desperation when I first got to the city, I was fired by the owner (so glad in retrospect) because someone ordered something they didnt like and complained, but the catch was the owner didnt inform me or the manager who was my direct supervisor, the manager had to ask what was wrong with my schedule for me and was just as surprised as I was. Support a better business!
Food was delicious but the staff are wonderful people! While dining at Ovelia my sunglasses fell out of my jacket. I told the staff and left my information. A week later, while doing maintenance on the outdoor dinning box they found my sunglasses under the heater!! I am absolutely thrilled they found them but more importantly that they are kind hearted people! I will definitely be coming back!
I always come here with friends. Its a great group place with lots of share plate options. Social distancing is great here. Staff was fast and as usual food was awesome. The surprise was the country chicken. It was so moist and well seasoned. I wish there was more. The branzino was also a stunner. Super fresh and flavorful!
I was shocked when I received the bill to find that the brunch Greek salad came to over $30. Upon speaking with the server, she explained that the up charge was for the salmon and adding salmon was an additional $13. Making the salad a total of $35. This was not made explicit to my table upon ordering as we had not been offered menus. Mind you, the salad was made up of tomatoes, cucumbers, 5 olives (3 green and 2 black), onions and a piece of feta— and said salmon—how that comes to 30+ dollars is unbelievable to me. If you do decide to go, be sure they don’t up charge you and ask for clarification of menu price upon ordering. My party will not be returning, which is a shame because I had always spoken highly of this establishment previously.
Pretty good menu, lots of options, but the food took a while to come out and the food was kind of heavy. like super salty and savory, which shouldn’t be a bad thing. We also had a little homeless man who sat next to us in the outdoor area which shouldn’t be an issue until he wanted to start shouting and fighting us.
Food was good, atmosphere is nice…but the service was horrific. When we sat, we weren’t greeted for 20 min, our drinks came out (water included) after our food dropped..I don’t think it was our servers fault, however there was no acknowledgement of this. Will not go again.
I was super excited to eat here and to be honest, I’m glad I tried it but will likely not be back. The drinks were ok, but took forever to get to our table. I literally sat there looking at my drink for 5 minutes before it made it into my hands. The food was good, but pretty expensive. I’m a huge fan of octopus and the one at Ovelia was nothing special. The texture was good, but the flavor was lacking. The brisket was good, but the corn was definitely not. All in all, it was a fine dinner, but expected more.
I don’t think I can adequately put into words what Peter, and his team do under the roof at Ovelia. But I can tell you this when it all comes together-to call it magic would be an understatement. From the ambience and decor, to servers and the most gracious host…I can proudly say I’ve eaten here 15-20 times now and I’ve never left disappointed.I celebrated my last birthday here with 10 of my closest friends and the quality of service matches when I sit down with my partner for a quiet cocktail and a small plate to share. If you are looking for Astoria’s best kept secret run don’t walk to the corner of 34th st and 30th ave -oh and most importantly show up hungry! (Order a grexican for me.. or two)
Went to Ovelia on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch with my brother.Been wanted to try this place for a while especially for weekends brunch. We got a greek salad and a blt sitting outside enjoying the sun.Dverything was perfect, good and fresh food and great service!42$ total including 1 espressoI hope to come back soon and try their pancakes as well!
Romantic greek restaurant. The decor is beautiful and service is impeccable. Highlights were The grilled whole octopus, feta with honey and the warm Rakomelo . . .A delicious mulled grape alcohol with honey, clove and cinnamon. Great placr to spend a nice evening with you special someone.
Great spot! The Grexican drink was my fav and the Sav Blanc very well paired w Greek food.Charred octopus and cheese sticks (I forget the Greek name) were perfectly cooked. Pita for dips the right balance of warm, doughy, charred and crisp. Rotisserie meats were yummy but both lamb and chicken over cooked so many sure to get it on the rare side.
One of the first restaurants that I tried in Astoria back in 2011, and still going strong. I love the brunch (prob of the few that I do) because it has real food options, like the lahmadzhun (lahmacun, a huge, delicious circle of crisp pita bread topped with a spread of lamb, & here pork, & spices) and, in the past, dishes like 2 eggs over cauliflower rice.Good coffee, decent brunch cocktails (inc a horseradishy bloody mary), friendly staff. Classy yet casual atmosphere, good for small parties and groups, music not blasting (yay!).Greek at its modern, Queen & NYC best.
Nice and cozy Greek restaurant with dozens of options that also make it inviting for both vegans and vegetarians as well. Great decor with the food and service to match. And when the weather is nice, theres also outdoor seating as well. Money well spent with quick access to nearby commuting services also if driving is a hassle. Theres a bar area as well. Reservations are recommended.
Cream curdled in coffee…replaced with fresh cup and was given more cream from same container!….third cup just went with the milk…..eggs came out ice cold!….twice asked for butter for dry toast, never saw it!!! No reason to dine here with so many other great choices nearby!!
Came here for drinks and apps. The frozen mojito was pretty good on a hot summer day! But hands down, their feta cubes was the winner - so delicious! They are served warm, covered in sesame, and drizzled with honey. Cant go wrong with that combo. And service was great!
The place is very beautiful, well located, excellent to have cocktails with friends, talk a little and enjoy an excellent meal in a great atmosphere, the staff is very attentive and cordial, be sure to try the octopus and lamb are very good, prices are quite reasonable
I love Greek food, this place was very decent it didn’t wow me, the food was good, the service was a little slow. Everything was slightly over average, but it portrays a little bit of a different vibe. I had higher expectations going there. I did enjoy my meal and I don’t have any complaints I guess I just expected a little more.
I was given the opportunity to drive halfway back across town and search for parking since they were too busy to-check the order and make sure all items ordered were included simply because they were busy. One of the major faults of a business is attempting to serve more customers when they can’t handle the ones they have. On top of that when I arrived home I was able to enjoy a cold meal along with overcooked, dry meat, soggy French fries and a soggy pita bread. This is the 2nd time out of 3 there has been issues with the order/food. I’ve reached out to business both times and while they have deleted my Instagram comments and read my messages they don’t reply. It’s safe to say they don’t value their their customers and I won’t be back unless they change.
It leaves a bad taste in my mouth to have to leave this review when our food and server were so wonderful at Ovelia. However, the manager’s attitude toward us when we experienced issues with our payment (that still remains a mystery, as they tried 4 of our cards that somehow “did not work” although we did not receive any notification from our banks that indicted something wrong) was absolutely abysmal. She was confrontational and demeaning towards this sensitive situation and continuously implied in a combative tone that it was our fault, that we needed to find out what was going on (despite us clarifying that everything on our end was it should be) and even going as far as asking if we were from “out of town” in a way that, in light of today’s climate, should have either been phrased in a different manner or not said at all. (it is important note that we spoke in Spanish for the majority of our meal). Whether or not this was her intention to come across this way is irrelevant. My husband was required to leave the restaurant, go get cash (where his card worked perfectly fine) in order to resolve the situation. There was complete lack of sensitivity, empathy and professionalism from her part when it came to handling this situation and she even went as far as giving us a sarcastic farewell when we left the restaurant, when it seems like the appropriate response should have been to at least demonstrate some sort of tact. Due to the serious lack of the customer service component, we will not be dining at Ovelia again.
My fav go to stop on 30th! Their menu is constantly changing and becoming even better for dinner!! I typically go for a glass of wine and appetizer at the bar when I just want to get out but even the vibe going alone or with someone is so great! Staff & bartenders are always so friendly
I had a great experience here. The service was top notch and the food tasted delicious and fresh. I got the lamb sandwich and my friend got the half chicken. My sandwich tasted incredible and like real lamb (as opposed to goat). My friend also enjoyed his dish, though the presentation of it could have included more color (carrots or herbs for green/orange tones); that is probably our only complaint. The appetizer we got (feta cheese cubes in a honey sauce) were also very delicious. The inside of the restaurant is very clean, chic, and modern; it gives a very nice bistro vibe. The drinks were also good, especially the sangria, and were part of the special/happy hour. Our total came out to $65+ tip for our two meals, an appetizer, and our two drinks, so expect it to be a little pricier than a casual meal. I would definitely return for a nice brunch experience in Astoria.
This place has the most mediocre of food choices. And the food itself was subpart in taste and quality. I couldnt even change how my egg was cooked in my bacon egg and cheese. The bread was meh. The whole sandwich was overpriced for the quality and portion size. We didnt get attentive enough service to get proper refills on our mimosas. I dont recommend
This place had the BEST avocado toast I’ve ever had. I know that avocado toast is usually a simple dish but the avocado mixed with the olive tapenade is simply genius! SO tasty & flavorful. Being vegan this place had manyyyy yummy options. I went here valentine’s weekend the service was a bit slow but understandably so being that it was so busy. The $7 mimosas & sangria’s were a nice touch as well. I cannot wait to return. My new favorite restaurant in Astoria.
Went for a dinner, due to the fact that the place was recommended by a friend. I have to say the food was amazing, I had buffalo calamari, with salmon burger, amazing! Drinks were good as well, only comment would be on the staff, was a little slow to get everything situated, and slow with the food. But hey, it was busy!
Good food, excellent service. But i dont think food and service are at the level of what the charge. In other words, the place can be quite pricey with little justification for it. After all, it is Greek salad, hummus and burgers. I recommend the bacon and figs as an appetizer and, lamb chops could be your main dish. Stay away from the tasteless and dry Greek coffee skirt steak.
I have been a few times here and most of the times I was very satisfied. However, this last time was the last Ill ever be there. I decided to take a group of my clients for lunch here; a total of 5 of us. We arrived exactly as they open at 11am and hada seat. We ordered a salad, the chicken with potatoes, a pizza, an appetizer that do not recall and some octopus. The brunette waitress was one of the rudest I have ever had to deal with. Her attitude began the moment we ordered and lasted the whole time. Even when we ordered drinks, she scoffed and brought us our drinks 30 minutes into our waiting time (11:30am), while the store has been starting to fill. Long story short most of our food came out at 12:30 (an hour and a half after we ordered) and every time we asked the waitress, she was not only unapologetic but scoffed at our questions and rolled her eyes. My plate was the last to arrive at 1pm. 2 stars only because the quality was descent as always.
I highly recommend this Greek restaurant/bar in Astoria. The food was DELICIOUS and so was the pitcher of sangria. My husband and I had a great time here and the hostess and waitress were so nice making the overall evening such a nice experience. I recommend starting out with the Choice of Three which gives you the opportunity to try a few of there amazing spreads, either hummus, eggplant, hot pepper feta, or tzatziki.
Discovered this place while walking the streets of Astoria searching for a quick bite. Ever so occasionally you stumble upon a gem, and thats the way I felt here. Service is friendly and efficient. The food was very well prepared and delicious. Every dish we ordered was spot on and enjoyable. I was shocked to learn they have been in this location for 12 years, and Id never known it was here. They are also family run and operated which is great to hear, they are doing things right! I will be making this a go to spot in the neighborhood.
Prices are too high, BUT its totally worth it. we ordered classic tzatziki dip and a salad. the dip was beyond great and bread tasted fresh. the salad was too simple and soo delicious, I believe it cant get better than that. Food quality is a 5-stars. the ambiance and service was very friendly.
After waiting 25 minutes we got our table (nothing wrong here). We sat and order a lemonade (excellent) and a diet Coke which was flat, not even a bubble. I complained with the server, she was great btw, and got an sparkling water. By now 35 minutes has gone by since we order food, at this point the wait was enough, I ask for the check, pay the FULL bill and walk out of the place. Long story short, place seems nice, servers where running up a down like crazy, personal opinion, I think this restaurant cant handle that many costumers at the same time. Not enough people in the kitchen to keep cranking food out of there. Way to crowded and loud, I guess I will come back and reevaluate this review when I have the chance to try their food.
In short, the price is a bit high for what you get. First, this is a greek-styled restaurant. There are Greek influences but dont expect Greek food. Second, the dishes are innovative and well executed. I ordered a venison burger, which was excellent. However the fries were soggy but flavorful. I tried other dishes from my friends and they were all good, but not great. If you check the menu youll see the prices are a bit high. The decor is nice and the outdoor seating is a helpful touch. However, on a value basis, Id say you can find better for the same price in this neighborhood
1 star for nice atmosphere and good location2nd star for friendly staff. This place has really gone Downhill, as far as the food goes. The staff is always friendly and attentive, but it’s what’s being produced in the kitchen I have an issue with. The last 3 times I’ve come here within 7 months has been anything but mediocre especially for the prices they are charging. i got the 1/2 roasted chicken... but it’s wasnt really a half roasted chicken it was 2 pieces drum sticks and two very small thighs... that’s not a half roasted chicken. My boyfriend got the coffee skirt steak. The coffee rub was god awful. And the sangria was super weak. All for $80 not including tip. Huge let down won’t be coming back here.
Came here to celebrate a birthday with a party of five. It was a perfect late summer night and we were able to be accommodated outside. We actually had to show up later than the initial time we set the reservation for, and the staff was able to adjust my reservation time when I called. We were asked to taste an appetizer which was a cube of watermelon topped with some cheese sauce and mint. What a great touch to start off the meal! We ordered a few appetizers: saganaki, grilled octopus, the three spreads with pita, spanakopita. I would definitely get the spanakopita again on a return visit. Served piping hot and perfectly flakey on the outside. We also got the monastiraki bifteki and lamb dip. Portions were generous and the sides of grilled vegetables and honey-yogurt slaw really balanced out the heartiness of the meat. Overall the experience was very positive. Expect to look for street parking.
My friend and I were in the neighborhood and decided to go there for early dinner . The menu was very appealing and we couldnt make our choices easily. However the food was not to the expectations, the appetizers were not good and the main course, half chicken for my friend and fancy salad for me, both were absolutely horrible. Wont repeat. Embarrassingly bad.
I had been hearing great things about this restaurant, so I decided to check it out. I went on a Friday around 3pm. My boyfriend and I started with the Buffalo Style Fried Calamari, which was basically fried calamari in buffalo sauce, it was good, but not something I would come back for. I ordered the Salmon Burger, which came with a small soup, I got Lobster Bisque. My boyfriend ordered the Tuna Salad Sandwich. The lobster bisque was delicious, the best part of the meal. The first thing I noticed about the Salmon Burger was that it smelled like hot dogs, which I thought was odd. I then tasted it, it was not good at all, I believe the patty used was frozen and the accompanying sauce was rather spicy. The tuna salad sandwich was very dry, but the sweet potato chips were great. There were alot more misses than hits during my visit here.
Great food. A little pricey and bourgeois specifically certain menu items they get carried away with like melitzanosalata. The grilled calamari was incredible. The waiter was one of the dryest most boring people Id ever met but I softened him up with time. They dont have the number one Greek sauce, baba ghanoush, but they have melitzanosalata instead. Perfect example of bourgeois. Put the baba back, get rid of the silly pretentious sauce.
Ah! Very cool place to hang out in the spring and summer as they have a DJ and outdoor seating. The downside is that is in a busy shopping area. Food is good and order takers are very nice. They need more of a selection on the menu as everything on the menu is very salsa oriented, whereas I prefer a creamy based entree.
While theres certainly no shortage of Greek options in Astoria, Ovelia has always been one of the best options. Whether its an entree or appetizer, dinner or brunch, or just drinks and mezzes, Ovelia never misses. The quality of the service and ambiance are right up there with the food. Its a great go-to for a date or a group.
Went there for brunch last Sunday. Food was decent, however, they messed up our orders. The kitchen personnel apparently “read the orders wrong” and only made food for 2 people instead of 3. I had to wait an extra 20-25 minuets for my food while my girlfriend and her friend awkwardly ate their meals.
Probably the most interesting concept when it comes to Greek Cuisine. The whole twist can intrigue any palate and the selection of the menu is carefully curated in order to maintain some extra flavor attention.I ordered the Garadopilafo which means Rice with Shrimps. It was so good and succulent .The flavors were just a pandemonium of taste.I enjoyed that with the tirokafteri which is a whipped spicy feta cheese.Dip it with pitta bread and you have a winner.A must try is also the feta cubes with honey . They have a sesame crust and the combination and balance of savory and sweetness will surprise you a lot.Good Job and definitely visiting again this beautiful restaurant soon.
Super expensive—one appetizer, two drinks, two entrees and a dessert was $150 with tip, easily one of the more expensive places I’ve ever eaten out at in Astoria (Nearly on par with Christo’s). If you’re willing to spend that kind of money, then this place is great for a special occasion, but I wouldn’t go back as a regular every day dining experience. The three dips with pita were good to start. The lamb dip I had was good but not worth the $25 in my opinion. The octopus (market price) was incredible. Food is on par with and similar to what MP Taverna on Ditmars used to be before it went down into the gutter, but at a higher price point.
As a recently moved greek in New York, this is by far the best place I have been so far for greek food.I went for traditional Easter food (lamp with lemon potatoes & kokoretsi) and I was amazed by how tasty everything was. Thank you guys for the experience, I really meant it when I told you that your food could be compared to my grandmas food in Easter time at my country house. Keep it real. Cheers!!
Astorias gem of Greek cuisine with a twist! The ambience is cosy and relaxing and at the same time upbeat and modern. Personal favourite is the Greek coffee marinated skirt steak that elevates meat to a whole new level or dimension even! And you dont need to be Greek to eat there. LOVE the bar decor and outlay but mostly their super tasty cocktails. And they do make the best margaritas in the borough. Staff is friendly and attentive, with a beautiful girl standing out for her hospitality and eagerness to accommodate your every need called Amanda. The manager of the place, Kolleen is a lovely lady making sure everything runs smoothly. Ovelia is owned by a family who keep their bond and greek traditions strong inside and out of the kitchen, spreading to the world their mothers charisma, delicious recipes and enthusiasm for great cooking. Definitely going back!!!
There is no need for a DJ in such a small place. The noise is too much and you cant enjoy a conversation with others in your table.I recommend you to reserve a table ahead of time otherwise you will wait a long time for a table.Service was fine.Food was ok.Price was too high.I will no recommend this place to anybody.
Went here one day after work with my co-worker. They sell mostly Greek food. My friend ordered for us because I wasnt sure what I wanted so we shared small plates. We ordered Greek salad, meatballs, fried calamari and a pitcher of red sangria. The meatballs were made from lamb, beef & pork. They came along side tzatziki sauce and grilled pita slices. They were tasty, a tad dry but the sauce helped. The pita was crisp, yet soft and warm. Good flavor. The greek salad was good. It consisted of tomato, cucumber, red onion, feta & kalamata olives (thats a real Greek salad, no lettuce) it was very good. We dressed it ourselves with the red wine vinegar and olive oil they put on the table. I loved the huge slices of cheese that we were able to cut up ourselves. Calamari was a huge portion, crispy, not chewy at all. It came accompanied with marinara & buffalo sauce. Sangria was refreshing, not too much orange peel in it (which I like) and it wasnt too sweet. It was good.Service was fast and the waitresses were very attentive.
Ovelia is one of those neighborhood spots you have to visit. Owner and head chef Pete does a remarkable job of fusing traditional Greek cuisine with some Americana flair. YOU MUST have the brisket on Rock-N-Ribs Wednesdays and stay for drinks into the evening when the atmosphere gets fun.
Came for lunch right before noon, and the services was PAINFULLY slow. It took the waiter a long time to take our order, and then we waited almost 40 minutes for two modest Greek salads with chicken. The food was decent but not amazing, and certainly not worth the wait. Couldve been an off day and they were short staffed, but it was annoying enough to compel me to write this review.
We made a delivery order. I asked the scallops, a $25 dish described as seared scallops, grilled asparagus and scallions, prosciutto, dressed with a citrus, butter and masticha reduction. I got a small dish consisting of 5 scallops, a tiny amount of extra thin asparragus and NO prosciutto AT ALL!!!!!!!! I used to liked this restaurant a lot but I was extremely disappointed by this dish, not only by the small portion but by the fact that some ingredients were just not there.
Unpleasant restaurant is my second time trying to enter this restaurant they make you sit down, depending on your race, at least if you are Hispanic, they will make you wait a lot to a point we’re you just don’t want to wait any longer definitely not a place that I will recommend

2022-07-10Amazing Greek food located in Astoria. The menu isn’t huge but has all the Greek classics. I recommend starting off with a spread. We selected the taste of three and thoroughly enjoyed the kafteri/ tzatziki/ hummus trio. Burgers aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Greek food but the Saganaki burger was juicy and packed with flavor. Greeks cook lamb to perfection so no surprise the lamb skewers were delicious and so tender. The highlight of the meal was the pita bread. Warm, seasoned, flaky just perfect. With or without the spreads, the pita was out of this world! The cocktails were beautifully and tasted even better.

2022-01-23Stopped by for a quick appetizer and a couple of drinks with my friend. The drinks are really pretty and the one I had (cant remember the name but I attached a photo) was delicious. We had the dips as an appetizer and they were all really yummy. The only thing I would suggest is a little more pita to accompany the dips with. Overall good experience

2022-03-23Good ambiance, great drinks and exceptional service. Our waiter was extremely kind and helpful in providing recommendations. We sat outside on a warm day and the shack wasnt too bad, it was nicely decorated. The only downside is the taste of the food. The feta cheese cubes are overrated in my opinion so as is the coffee steak. Nothing on the menu really stood out to me like other Greek restaurants.

2022-02-09Great service and atmosphere. Had a couple of appetizers and desert - good flavor, the lamb on French fries (actually fresh cut potatoes that were delicious and almost roasted) dish with cheese was such comfort food.Enjoyed one of their non alcoholic Cocktails with ginger and rose which was perfectly not too sweet.

2021-10-18Food was great, service was very poor. It took us a long time to get anyone’s attention to order and then three requests for our check at the end of the meal. Everything took a long time, a coffee took 15 or 20 minutes. The restaurant was not full but it seemed like our server was continually forgetting us.

2022-03-16My wife and I used to love this place for happy hour pre-pandemic. We would go almost every Thursday for years even if the owner never greeted us or wanted to spend time talking to us. They had a terrific happy hour prices on vino and small plates. So of course we couldn’t wait to head back in the summer of 2021 when the city was opening up and much to our disappointment, there was no longer a happy hour, the small plate menu had changed, prices increased, portions reduced and the wait staff was cold including an owner that cherry picks the customers he was to spend time greeting. We haven’t gone back since. I understand happy hour is back now - maybe we’ll stop in.
