I have actually been a client at The Academy NYC before it even opened- I was so excited I called for weeks straight before the doors were even put in! I do come here sporadically throughout the time they have been open. The main reason for this is the caliber of professionals that come out of this institution make you want to follow them where ever they go. I have probably had my hair done by 6-8 different students, both levels, and always had a fantastic experience start to finish. From the teachers to the students, everyone is so wonderful to be around and are always willing to try something new. You wont be disappointed!
This salon school has incompetent students with extremely slow service, and the instructors dont supervise them while they are working on clients hair. This is the 3rd time Ive gone here (each time with a different student stylist), and it will definitely be the last!My experience this time:15 minutes to wash my hair (while tangling it up into a mess)20 minutes to comb it out (after she made knots with an unnecessary scalp massage)... I ended up taking the comb from her and combing it through myself10 minutes of sectioning and clipping my hair (when all I wanted was a simple blowout)Then came 45 minutes of styling... She proceeded to drench my hair with mousse from roots to ends. The word slow doesnt even describe the pace that this student worked. I felt like taking the blow dryer from her and doing it myself. Again, no instructor in sight. She also did my blowout completely backwards... Everybody knows that youre supposed to start in the back with the underneath layers when you are blow drying long hair and work your way to the top and front. This student took an hour and a half, and when she was done my hair looked absolutely horrible! Not completely dry, frizzy, the front of my hair hanging in my face feeling all weighed down and dirty with unwanted mousse. What a waste! An hour and half and $12 spent there and I couldve done the job 100% better myself. You definitely get what you pay for. Tomorrow I will be going to a professional salon to get my blowout redone.Clients beware! The students are incompetent, and the instructors do not watch what they do. The instructors hang out by the desk having cookies and coffee and chatting while the students make a mess of clients hair.
I definitely would never recommend this place. I lost all passion for hair before I even graduated and was ripped off. Tuition is constantly changing and youre told not to discuss your monthly payments nor how much you paid in tuition with other classmates. The kit is a rip off and worth less than what you actually paid for it. Theres no diversity when it comes to learning different hair textures or special guests. I would never do it all over again. I wish I wouldve stuck with Arrojo. I just so happen to see a video before my graduation of a graduation ceremony from a real Paul Mitchell school and I was upset with the complete differences. Realizing how much they cut corners. Theres no real phases or honors list for said phases.
Do not enroll here unless youre in touch with Paul himself of have a job already lined up!!! The school is beautiful and everyone was really nice when I had my tour. I ended up not enrolling because when I asked around at other salons and with other professionals I know they all told me the above. The reason for this is because of what they teach. They only educate on things Paul Mitchell including the way they cut color and style. So the education is not varied enough to work in any other salon making it difficult to find a job. Also the tuition is ridiculously high so your mostly paying for the name of the school.
I am an adult, 3 months into cosmetology school. I was in another career for 13 years, and had one opportunity to get my license, and proceed in a career of the arts vrs the rest of my professional life behind a desk (although I loved my job and my company, I always felt like I was in the wrong industry) and so I took a leap of faith. I visited 5 school here on the island and in Manhattan, before making my final decision to enroll in Paul Mitchell. I was given the tour by the owner herself, which was a huge influence on my decision. She is active and accessible within the building, and practices a perfect balance of professionalism and humanity. Although speaking from my experience alone, I have never needed her guidance directly because the teachers are incredible and run the school as if it were their own. What I have experienced as a 39 year old student is this; school has the ability to mold you into licensed professional cosmetologist, if you let them. This starts with simple things like following the dress code, being on time, being prepared, handing work in on time. They are hard on you (also reasonably patient) because they want you to walk out not only as a graduate into the industry prepared, but as a top choice hire, carrying their name. This is not the school for the kid who’s just looking for something to mark them present on an attendance sheet. They expect hard work, dedication, professionalism, self motivation, and a true curiosity in the art of cosmetology. It’s also a lot of fun! (Honestly this place is like a vacation compared to my 40-60 hour work week, getting to do and learn about what I love all day long!) I feel I am getting the best opportunity and I’m confident about my choice to enroll. That being said, I do see some of the kids struggling with one another, from my point of view it’s the students NOT the school. Some create groups of restrictive friendships, others seem to welcome conflict rather then ignore it. Many spend more time worrying about what everyone else is doing, rather then using that energy to better themselves. You have to remember what you are here for and stay focused, your time enrolled is limited, there is something new to learn every single day as long as you are willing to learn. The teachers and staff do everything they can to accommodate struggling students and make there enrollment a successful one but unfortunately the real world is not going to be as accommodating. It is up to the student to apply themselves, the teachers and staff give you all the tools and opportunities you need to succeed, they guide you and try to fill your day with not only new experiences, but repetitive study so that when u leave you are confident and knowledgeable. So far every graduate who has dropped in to say hi, or network is actively working in the industry, and more important are happy with their career choices and experiences.
Im not to much of a complainer nor will I ever tell anyone else what to do. But 30 vol bleach on my scalp was totally not called for. Now Im not a stylist nor do I have a license but Ive been doing my hair and researching and am 1000% that its not suppose to be that high of a volume on my scalp. When they were toning my hair my scalp starting burning but they insisted it was just cause of my sensitive scalp. I came home the next day and saw I had scabs all over my head. Chemical burns. I dont blame the student she was lovely and just following her instructors instructions. But I honestly feel the instructors disappear when the student needs to consult with them. Anyways I had yellow hair up top and orange on the bottom. I just wanted a light brown
The quality has gone down hill over the last year! I believe its the teachers who are supposed to be there to help out. Seems like every time they need one they are not around. I spent more time waiting while they socialized and said goodbye to one of the teachers then actually doing my hair! I went for full highlights, after I get there they didnt have time they could only do a partial. I told them sulfate free shampoo only. They teacher used regular anyway! The student who did my hair left while i was in the sink with toner on. so I laid there until the teacher (who it was her last day) came over to rinse it out. SO no haircut or blow dry because the girl left.!st time ever I didnt leave a tip! very unprofessional experience!!!!
I am a full time student at this school and it has been an a amazing experience. I would recommend this school to everyone no matter how young or how old. You get great training in everything cosmetology. We do makeup specialty, we do hair specialty. The learning leaders are amazing and their teaching skills help a lot. Thank you The Academy NYC for everything.
I have always gone to the Paul Mitchell School in Pasadena with great experiences. I didnt expect any less here. The front desk was very friendly, the teacher went over the consultation with the student before jumping in. I got a layered cut, light highlights and a blowout. It came out great.
Love this school. Love the teachers and the atmosphere. I started in October 2016 and am graduating this coming Tuesday, June 13th. Ive learned so much and developed so much of my passion since attending this school. The staff and teachers here always encourage you to keep trying, ask questions, and believe in yourself. They teach us new trends and techniques all the time and keep us current with whats popular in the beauty industry. Ive made friendships that will continue to grow and met people I can collaborate with in the future. If you are looking to go to cosmetology school in NY this is definitely the number one choice!!
Great experience. My daughter and i were having lunch at Piece a Cake and stopped in more out of curiosity. My daughter opted for a blowout. It came out amazing with curls and everything. She loved it. I might give it a shot myself one day but I recently got my haircut.
Im a current, soon to be graduating student at The Academy NYC. Its been an amazing experience and the learning leaders are great. They never hesitate to help me when i need it and the teams that the school offers such as The Be Nice or Else Team, The Take Home Team, Design Team and Student Council are all great as well, but also educational. No matter what you do here, your always learning something in fun and different ways. I couldnt be happier with the choice i made in coming here.
Its a school, so be prepared to take your time here. I come semi-regularly for glazes. Its the best place to get an updo -- the students are so creative. I had a vision of a mohawk braid and my hairstylist made it happen. The teachers are always checking up on things, but Ive never had anything go wrong. Couldnt be happier.
I love the highlights the student did on my hair, they came out perfect! But the cut on the other hand wasnt what I had in mind. I show them a pic of how I wanted the cut, after everything was done the cut was super short and so was the bang. This is a cute cut for the spring or summer but not what I wanted for the winter. I will likely go back for my highlights but my cut I will go else where.
Below 0 !!! They don’t even explain that the hairdresser is absolutely non- trained and not experienced!! But the price of service offered is higher than in a very established beauty salon !! The trainer never even stopped by during the service to make sure the trainee is doing proper service!! Then can’t even wash the hair properly! Left the place with Horrible hair style !! Had to go to a regular place to re- do it
I am currently enrolled as a student at The Academy NYC. I graduate in March 2017. When coming in for my tour I loved the vibe and even looking around it was like everyone loved being here.Im on the 5th month here and I love coming in everyday:)The teachers are very helpful and I am building my confidence and skill everyday. If you want to schedule an appointment with me my student ID# is 1976
This school is a horrible school. The teachers dont teach you anything they just go on breaks and leave you with the clients waiting for help. They suck out all your money and dont really care about you. They really made it seem like a great school the day I went for my interview but when I started I realized its a giant scam. They are selfish money suckers I wish I listened when people told me not to attend here. If anyone wants to go here I highly recommend you dont and look into another school with staff who genuinely cares about the students.
Honestly as a hair styling place its not bad however as a school all i have heard is negative things many of my friends go here currently and hate it, most of what they learn is from youtube videos and they feel the teachers are useless and not helpful. Definitely dont recommend as a beauty scheme

2021-11-19I cant remember who did my hair but I had a lovely experience. The teacher showed the student hair dresser how to do everything first. I got face framing layers and a few inches of the end and it looked great. It took a long time since she was a student, but for $20 bucks I cant complain! Facilities are clean and everyone is very nice. Would definitely come back.

2022-04-19I live in Brooklyn and this was definitely worth the travel to Staten Island. I’ve never left a salon so in love with my hair and I love it I can’t wait to go back in a few weeks to get my hair highlighted.

2019-10-15Wednesday September 25 , 2019 5:15pmMy recent experience at The Academy NYC, A Paul Mitchell hair salon Staten Island was a NIGHTMARE. I have tried this place many years ago and I was always satisfied but I had the absolute worst experience when I went to this place yesterday. I understand majority are students along with the teacher guiding them through. when I walking I was welcome with smile a for my 5:15 pm appointment. I asked Marie the teacher for a hair cut, balayage and to color my roots. She said to me it would be no problem and she brought one of her students to do my hair. The student was very polite and respectful but very slow she took 5 hours JUST to foil all my hair. The sad part was that the teacher Marie was not there to watch her and guide her she offer her help ONCE and she walked away. Then at the end Marie came back to help she pulled my hair bangs to paint but she did it so carelessly that it hurt my head. I have had done balayage before and I have never seen somebody doing it the way they did. Every piece of my hair they took it was different size and i started to panic when the student called her teacher Marie to tell her that my hair is turning orange!! Marie the teacher said “don’t worry looks beautiful” but I felt something was not right. 3 hours passed and the lady was STILL bleaching my hair and then another 2 hours passed continuing this.By the time I knew it, it was 9:30 pm and at that time she started washing my hair. The student asked me if I still wanted a haircut and a blow dry, I looked at her and I said yes I am not going home like that. She was ready to let me go home in SOAKING WET HAIR because they were close to closing and she wanted to go home. They had everything ready to go and the music and lights turning off like they wanted to kick me out right then and there. The teacher Marie came over and said to me sorry but we can’t blow dry you hair it’s late so I said to her excuse me I can’t go home like that. She pretty much didn’t care! How sad is that. She has the title of a teacher and in my opinion SHE needs go back to school and learn to be a good teacher. The point of teaching is to help make the costumer happybut she was just in a hurry to go home. They had the audacity to charge me $132 what a joke, I was ready to cry after complaining how much i hated it and the fact that I did it before going away on vacation. They ended up charging me $84 but I regret paying. That’s much this kind of job cost $0. They wasted my time and left me with the worst hair you could imagine. What a mistake I should’ve kept my hairstyle because she absolutely ruined my hair. I wouldn’t take the chance coming to this place again very sad they way they teach this student, and I am very disappointed. :(After my review of my nightmare experience with Paul Mitchell academy I decided to call the school to share my experience, I spoke to Diana, one of the teachers, she apologized for what happened with me. She asked me to please come back and that she would personally be there when arrived. I meet two of the teachers, Diana and Danielle very nice ladies and it was completely different from what I experienced going at night but in a much better way. They apologized the student Jessica took care of the whole process while Diana and Daniel guided her, and she follows every detail. I was very happy with her job and it looked much better. Before I left Diana asked me to come back for a complimentary hair treatment a week later, went back Diana show Jessica exactly what to do. Jessica did a beautiful job. I think having open communication with students is very important and that’s exactly what I saw. If I have to go back, I will definitely go back during the early class because I just feel more comfortable but that’s just me. Thank you, Diana and Danielle, for take care my problem and thank you, Jessica I wish you good luck and keep up the good work!

2019-11-09Go see Victoria!! Went last night to get my hair done for my birthday I knew it would be hard to lighten my hair since it was black and the previous hair salon has did a horrible job I went from red to black and she did an amazing job lightening my hair that was still red underneath the black! She put highlights around my face from and it came out such a beautiful color very natural looking as well. Also did a special treatment to my hair that left it incredibly soft and silky even after dying it. Go see Victoria the girls there are wonderful.

2020-03-03I love coming to the Paul Mitchell School for my haircuts and balayage coloring! The teachers are attentive and understanding, and the hair students watch carefully and learn quickly when a teacher helps with the hair process. I especially love the teacher Diana, and the students Carmella and Hayley. When the students graduate, the front desk reps give helpful advice on who to choose considering what type of hair you have and what youre looking to do. So sweet.

2020-03-03Ive been coming to the Academy for a long time now and I have never been disappointed. I have had a few different students and watched them graduate. Recently, I trusted Anna with her first time doing highlights and it has been my favorite my hair has ever come out. Always high praise to give about the work they do and the students in general.

2019-05-08I recently got the opportunity to complete my 1000 hours at The Academy NYC and graduate with a lot of knowledge with the help of my multiple learning leaders. The each taught me something different. I left a different person then when I walked in. I look at this job from a different perspective now because they taught me that we dont just do hair, or nails, or makeup. We help people feel better about themselves and touch hearts with our skill and personality. I am so grateful to be taking my first few steps into this industry with the help of all my mentors. Im excited for the future!

2016-08-20Ive been to the Paul Mitchell School in Chicago, so I expected nothing less than exceptional service for a school. Of course, its obviously a school so theyre learning, but from personal experience the students at the Chicago location always do very well. I expected consistency when coming to this location in Staten Island.Unfortunately, this school only offers level 1 service, unlike Chicagos level 1 and 2 service, so I was stuck with a student who took 2 and a half hours for a cut and style with treatment since Staten Island only offers level 1. The girl did a good job with the cut, except the styling took forever just to give the smallest, most lifeless curls Ive ever seen. It wasnt worth sitting in a chair for an hour and a half since I ended up going home and curling my own hair anyway. She offered to redo it, which was considerate, but at that point I was ready to go home. The teachers could work on her customer service. Please dont give attitude if youre going to ask a client for honest feedback. The teacher asked me what I thought, and I told her I expected the blow out to have bigger curls, but the cut was very good; however, before I could finish my sentence, she automatically cut me off with a brief, Shes learning. I obviously know this, and I honestly wasnt upset until the teachers curt attitude, but forgive me for having high expectations for Paul Mitchell students.I was also upset because they dont allow card for tip, so I used minimal cash I was lucky to have on hand. My fault--I just assumed that since the Chicago school allowed tip on the card, then this location would. The receptionist kept insisting that I go to the ATM, but frankly the service wasnt worth the extra take-out charge on my card.I will say the girl who did my hair did pretty good for a level 1, but I wish I was given someone with more experience. This location was also very patient with me considering how long it took to get from Manhattan to SI on a weekend (3 hours!!!!), so Im glad they were able to find room for me. All in all, the cut was great, but Im unsure as to whether Ill trek out to this location again.

2020-01-17I took my two daughters and myself to the Academy for cuts and a color. We were warmly welcomed and very well taken care of. My two daughters were very happy with their cuts and so was I. My color matched my hair color perfectly. Thank you Katie, Lisette, Michael, and Marie. You all did a great job.
