My husband and I tried Penn Yans Diner for the first time today. First of all we are senior citizens and do not use our cell phones to order in a restaurant on an app. The waitress was very nice, and she found one menu for us to share and read. Then we ordered a roast beef open faced sandwich with gravy. The roast beef was not very tasty and seemed it was not very fresh. The gravy tasted like it should be dog gravy. He said it was the worst roast beef sandwich he had every eaten. I ordered a Reuben sandwich. The corn beef was so dry and tasteless and tasted old and burnt and the thousand island dressing was very sparse that i had to ask for more dressing. After i received a side of dressing, I couldnt finish the sandwich. It was that awful. The service was good, but the food was the worst we had ever had. That will be the last time we eat there.
Small diner with a great atmosphere. My server was fantastic and very pleasant. Hands down the best sausage gravy I have ever had. The real maple syrup is worth the up charge on the French toast.4/7/19Finally talked some of my coworkers into coming here again. Still just as good. They had a locally produced hot sauce this time around, Sudsys Fearless. Great flavor with good heat. The sausage gravy is still on point!
This place is heaven. The staff is amazing, and the food even better. Its small, but thats what makes it so comfty. Its my favorite diner. The pankakes taste like clouds! You can watch the people make some of the food, and its incredible how they work together. Great for familys alike. No matter the drive, its worth it!!! IF YOU HAVENT BEEN HERE YOU HAVENT LIVED.
Small place with a counter and a few tables. We sat at the counter right by the grill. I had a cheeseburger and chips, food was good and we enjoyed the visit. It looks like this is an old diner car with some added on space. Give it a try I think youll like the experience.
Absolutely LOVE the Penn Yan Diner. Such a fun experience, eating at the counter in an old train car. The food is prepared right in front of you, and is delicious (the potatoes are the best!) But the best part was the wonderful people that work here, so friendly and sweet. We came every morning for breakfast and will definitely be back.
Very Good. Small diner that used to be a train car. Dined on Thursday morning, August 5th, 2021. Only had to wait a few minutes for a seat. Ordered coffee, scrambled eggs, bacon and a sausage patty. Food came fast. The food was great. Bacon was very thin but tasted good. Waitress was very friendly. Eggs were cooked in butter and awesome, not like the last diner I went to in Penn Yan that cooked them in old grease and I couldnt eat them. Restroom was clean.. Nice little place.
What a cute little diner! They have contact less menus and social distancing, which I really appreciated. I ordered a hot chocolate and the Sean order - eggs, bacon, toast, 2 pancakes and home potatoes. The diner offers gluten free pancakes with optional blueberries, chocolate chips or strawberries and they were FLUFFY AS HELL. They also offer gf toast that was yummy. Wonderful place and the customer service was top notch. Would definitely be back!
I first heard about this place when participating in the Peasantman Tri and finally visited recently. The prices are reasonable, the staff are friendly, overall an ideal diner atmosphere. Only area I feel like they could improve in is the space - its very small. But, service is great and moves fast and theres outdoor seating, so we didnt have to wait and I wouldnt expect a long wait in the future.
The best breakfast in all of the finger lakes by far!!! My husband and I ate here for breakfast every single day on our recent trip to the area, 4 days in a row, never got sick of it, and the food just got better every day! The diner is absolutely adorable, the staff are so nice and friendly, and the food is absolutely amazing. You can tell all of the food is fresh and homemade. Most importantly, the diner was very clean and everyone followed all social distancing guidelines. We will definitely be visiting again on our next trip!
It was our first time being there. The ambiance is so cool! We were immediately greeted by the waitress. She was very friendly and chatted with us many times throughout our time there. I ordered the Big Steve and a Sweet Cream pancake. Im not typically a pancake person but it was delicious!!! I was over-stuffed because I couldnt let anything go to waste. 😉 Definitely a MUST when you are in the area! (My husband even had to buy one of their coffee mugs for $.25!!)
This place was amazing! Friendly helpful service and delicious food! Make sure you check the specials on the board when you walk in. Our group had biscuits and gravy, tater tot casserole, the special of the day french toast, and there wasnt a scrap left on anyones plate. Everything was delicious. The decor is vintage diner thats been deeply cared for, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I definitely plan to go back next time Im in the area.
Delicious breakfast, relaxed atmosphere. Employee (lady, didnt catch her name) was very friendly and helpful with special dietary requirements. Dine Al fresco, chatted with some other travelers who were also visiting because if the college. Definitely will visit again when in town!
Nice little diner with only a little curb appeal but tons of character, good service, and great food. Not a lot of seating with only about 8 small tables and a long counter with a dozen stools. Its worth the wait for the experience and food. The pancakes are a highlight of their food offerings. Awesome coffee too!
Best breakfast in Penn Yan. Unfortunately there’s usually a wait here because it is a small diner and COVID-19 restrictions make it so they can only have a limited amount of people in the diner. But it’s definitely worth the wait. They also are super supportive of Penn Yan Ambulance. I’m a member there and the diner bought our breakfast for us when we came here one morning.
The service was great and the food was good. I got the Sweet Pancake and found it to be good, but not great. My colleague got eggs and toast and found that the eggs were very good and the toast was also good. There isnt much space on the inside and it very much is just an old fashioned diner. Overall food was average and service was great. I would recommend this place for a quick breakfast because the food is good and is served quickly.
Ive been coming here with my family for years while passing through and every trip is worth the 1 and a half hour drive! Staff is kind and helpful, atmosphere is lovely, food is AMAZING, and everything was worth the drive! Tight seating doesnt bother me at all and the 45 min wait was 100% worth it because we could walk around and look at little shops nearby. My family brought a whole cooler to take lots of leftovers home because we only come a couple times a year! Well definitely keep coming back with our t-shirts!
Update 2021: difficult to get a seat! My review is working! Our good ppl at the diner still knocking amazing food out of the park! Short hours open, so get there early and enjoy the now hopping town of Penn Yan . I almost dont recognize ya. Weve been visiting the diner for 8+ years now...... I and my family have been coming to the diner for about 3 years. We are out of sorts if we miss coming when in town. We ordered turkey for our Thanksgiving dinner and it was absolutely worth ever tasty bite!!! The owners are amazing , always remember us and treat us like good friends. Pick anything, ANYTHING on the menu and you will never be disappointed. P.S. my kids love it over all the other restaurants on Keuka Lake. Love from your friends in Buffalo!!!!
We stopped in here on our way out of town. There was quite a long wait time, but the wait was well worth it! Its a super small, tight place but if you are not socially claustrophobic, then its a pretty good place to stop and get breakfast. I havent had buckwheat pancakes in very long time, and theirs are pretty darn good. I would definitely suggest it to anyone who is in Penn Yan during breakfast time.
Retro diner with excellent food. Very small inside, be prepared for that. Homemade offerings include scratch gravy, biscuits, corned beef ( cooked the right way- long and slow) and pancakes, sweet or buckwheat. Great experience all around, cant beat the prices either. Wish I lived closer!
This places is incredibly cute and surreal. I once had a dream about a restaraunt where the ceilings were absurdly low and the building was weirdly tiny. Somehow this was exactly as i had seen in that dream, its absolutely adorable. I got the corned beef hash breakfast with dinermade hash, I recommend it.
Cozy diner in the heart of town. The owner maintains a faithful 50s look and feel. Basic breakfast menu and several daily specials. The food is simple, tasty and reasonably priced. Friendly service but you might have to wait if you go at prime time. Theyll take your name and text you when a table is ready.
The restaurant promises to be retro-licious and does not disappoint. Absolutely everything weve eaten here has been amazing. The staff is super friendly and will cheerfully make substitutions. Try literally anything. And when the staff suggests the local hot sauce? Say yes!
Hands down the best breakfast in Penn Yan and probably the entire Finger Lakes region too. The owners and staff are very friendly and the food is incredible. They have some of the best pancakes Ive ever eaten (sorry dad) and my personal favorite is the Big Steve which is sausage gravy on hashbrowns with toast. Unless youre really loading up, a meal for two will never cost more than $15-20. The only downside to the entire place is that seating is very limited due to the building being a remodeled train car. Its very good for atmosphere but not so much for large groups. Otherwise a great choice for a morning out.
The food was disgusting and over priced for what we got. I ordered bicuits and gravy with eggs on the side. Biscuit and gravy looked like canned cat food. They put my eggs on top of gravy and then placed them on separate plate (they had sausage gravy all over the bottom). My husband ordered chicken fingers which were under cooked. He asked for fries instead of the chips. Was charged for a side of fries and never got the chips it came with (if we had to pay for both we should have recieved both). Soda was warm and flat. Server was too busy talking to friends to bring our check. We will never go back. We went because the great reviews but this place is gross.
I just went to the Penn Yan Diner for the first time ever tonight. The food was excellent (roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy) and the owners are really friendly. I was also really impressed with the french onion soup. They told me they just bought the place a little over a year ago. So if youve been there in the past and werent satisfied, try it again. You wont be disappointed.
I did not eat here so its only fair so say upfront that this review is for service. As I walked by with my dog the owner was so kind and asked if he needed any water. That says a lot about the business right there. Thanks for the generosity. Cant wait to come and try the food!
Charming and classic diner with all of the traditional fare and a few unique twists. Some of highlights of our meal were the Texas French Toast, Homemade Corned Beef Hash, Sweet Batter Pancakes, and the Salmon burger. If youre staying in the area, stop by and have a bite!
Friendly diner, but very small. I guess thats what makes it quaint. If youre over 6 feet tall, you better duck through the doorway. Staff was very friendly. We went at 0730 on a Sunday and had no issues getting a seat and the wait time for the food was average. Would go back to again.
I love this place! Absolutely the best place for a relaxed, delicious meal at a great price in Penn Yan. I had a Pizza Burger and I loved it! Everything was made in house, the burger, the bun, the fries, the macaroni and cheese. I kind of felt like my mom would be jealous that I was enjoying their food so much!
We read that this diner has the best breakfast in town. So of course we went when we were in town for our long wedding weekend. There are very few tables, as it’s an old rail car and they use an app for checking in. So we gave our name and number and they said they would text when a table was ready. They estimated 15-20 min. Because there is no space to wait inside and it was a nice day, we sat outside in the sun on a cute town bench. After 20 min we noticed other people who arrived after us were going in, but thought they had been waiting elsewhere first so were actually ahead of us. Another 10 then 20 then 30 minutes...still no text. Finally, my husband went in to check and the young woman hosting said with a blaming tone, “well I texted you”, which we definitely never received. No second text, no peek out the door to see if we were out there. She just moved on. With an attitude of taking no responsibility, she said, “you can sit now”, but her rudeness made staying feel unpalatable. By then it was nearly lunch so we ended up at an incredible Mexican restaurant in town that saved the day!!
Great place for breakfast, so funny some of these people, whomever said long wait time...hmm what do you expect from a great small diner. And for all the gluten free comments...go somewhere else then, all you want is attention. Keep up the good work...thanks for having us.
Very small, cute, and quaint place with good food and service. Ok, this isnt a knock to the establishment but an observation to all who want to visit. This place is very cramped and small, so if you have a group of more than 4 people, its best if you choose another place. I was there and someone asked if they could take a group of 12? Seriously? I think this place can house maybe 30 people inside. Just be smart when coming here, small groups only!
I loved the food and environment before it changed hands and at first the food wasnt very good with the new owner but now the food is great. I definitely recommend one of the in house made pies. They are fonomanal! Especially the coconut cream pie, definitely my favorite!
Called for a reservation and they stated I could only make a reservation online. Wouldn’t budge and I’m in my 20’s I have no problem going online. But what a hassle to download an app for a reservation. Food was good but service was slow and there were ants every where. Everything priced 2-3 dollars more then any other diner I’ve been to. Won’t be going back.
Very over priced my eggs came broke and we sat and waited for our food for over 45 mins and the place was deadStaff was rude2 ppl and it was 30$ for just breakfast think thats way too muchWent a cross the street to the Wagner the next day way more food on a plate and staff was super nice for 2 ppl is was 17$

2022-06-10We stumbled across this wonderful diner while driving through Penn Yan to visit a Mennonite farm store. We were pleasantly surprised to find that this diner offers plentiful gluten-free options. My wife got the gluten-free pancakes and also a side of bacon. She loved both. I got the eggs benedict and black coffee and everything was great. There was a good many locals that made for interesting small-town people watching. The staff at the restaurant were very kind and very welcoming. The food also came out astoundingly quickly.I am 6‘2“ tall and I will say that the door and the ceiling were rather low which made the place even more charming, although I did have to duck in order to walk into the establishment. The bathrooms were well-kept but tiny for such a tall man as myself. Not a bad thing just simply something to note.Highly recommend! You definitely need to visit this place for breakfast or lunch if you’re driving through Penn Yan.

2021-10-05Food was great and everyone working there was wonderful! We over ordered because we couldnt decide. She had the Sean which was 2 eggs, bacon, French toast and potatoes. Also ordered 1/2 order biscuits and gravy - sooooo good! He ordered the eggs Benedict with side order of 1 sweet cream pancake. Everything was delicious! Well come back again.

2022-04-30I went here with my daughter on a Tuesday morning. Nice old school dine. It was pretty busy but not crazy. We were told to sit where ever we liked, so we sat at the counter. We had a front row seat by a flatop and watched the cook making orders! The waitress asked us about drinks and brought them back pretty fast. The food was Great as was the service. We definitely will be going back when I am in Penn Yan.

2022-06-29First timers: Breakfast served all day. This is a very traditional diner. Small, tight, old and vintage but still nice. Just like walking back in time. WiFi is beyond excellent. Bathrooms very small but clean, kept up and updated. Coffee $2.49. Staff very nice. Tried the diner-hash, it was okay but I came away somewhat disappointed. I did give it above average stars and would recommend this place.
