Pet World in other cities:
I really want to like this store, but every time we get fish or frogs from here they don’t last long. We have fish and frogs from another store we shop at that have been in our tank for awhile. Our African Dwarf frogs from Pet World both died within two weeks. But our other two from a different store have been around for months and still living. When I called Pet World they told me their policy is within 48 hours and they claimed that their frogs are perfectly healthy. They weren’t willing to work with me (nor seemed sorry) and now I have a very upset six year old. 👎
Awesome shop I just picked up my python there saves my back during water changes. And last week bought a sweet piece of driftwood didnt cloud my water just like the guy said it would not. Great customer service and rare finds here and a great selection of live aquatic plants grown underwater. I state this because there is little to no melting with plants grown underwater vs cultures and plants in a tube. Great store my go to for filters and such.
I used to enjoy shopping here, but every time Ive come in lately theres been dead or sickly fish in the tanks. And I cannot STAND the designer puppies in the glass boxes. Please stop working with breeders and start working with rescues. Staff is usually great, but the puppies and the sickly fish have made me find a new store.
Great place to get rabbit and dog supplies. Was very helpful in trying to find a dog food that ours would eat because he was extremely undernourished when we adopted him. Found out part of the reason was that he would rather starve than eat food he doesnt like so we were able to bring about 15 samples home for him to try until we found one hed eat, albeit not with the reckless abandon every other dog demonstrates when you put food in front of them.
I have what I think is a large fish room. All my tanks large and small along with all my lighting, filtration, air lines, ect. Have all come from here. The staff are wonderful and love talking fish. They all treat the customer like they are old friends. I really enjoy shopping here
While I love this store for their selection of fish supplies, half the time I purchase fish from both here and the Greece location they are sick in some type of way. I really appreciate the employees and how attentive they are and how well they maintain the tanks but I believe whoever they get their fish from don’t take good care to ensure the animals are healthy. Love when they have the puppies and I understand how expensive they are is because they are from breeders (hopefully local and not a breeding mill) but they should offer some kind of payment plan for them, not many people have $2000 to drop on a dog any day of the week. The selection of cat litter is slim but they do have good brands. They do sell tiny bowls and “betta cubes” and have all this directly next to their Bettas as if that is a proper home for a betta fish.
DO NOT BUY FISH FROM HERE!!!! I have bought fish from 5 places for my current tank. 6 fish have died from Pet World all less than 2 weeks. Including 2 female guppies that both lasted less than 24 hours. Got the first replaced and water checked it was perfect. Got another female guppy from the same tank dead in 12 hours or less. 3 hatchetfish also died right after the 48 hour exchange and a corydoras that lasted 10ish days. I have been keeping fish for decades. Not a novice. All of the fish that i have bought from other places lived including 2 santa claus guppies that didnt die. Save you money and go literally anywhere else for fish.
Used to come here all the time when I had an aquarium. I brought husband and kids, age 6 and 11, to start up new aquarium. There was only 1 other customer in fish area with 2 employees. 1st a younger guy was helping us, moderately helpful, but then an older woman helped with questions he couldnt answer. She was rude and condescending - instead of educating my husband about what fish could go together she just said No. No goldfish with those! The guy told us a small angelfish was ok with the guppies, but then after he wrapped it up she says to us Im not guaranteeing that fish! They cant go together . They each gave us conflicting information in addition to being rude.I tried to ask the cashier if there was a manager and was told the manager is never here, we are short staffed... and other excuses. (she was sitting with no customers when we walked up.)This really put a damper on our family experience of setting up a new tank. We walked out.
This place is absolutely awful I wouldnt buy anything there. I bought several fish from them and they all end up dying within 6 months. Fish in my tank bought from ABC aquarium have outlived every fish bought from here. I also spent 170$ on a fluval light for my tank and that broke after 9 months and they wont refund me. Any advice the staff gives you on keeping fish is absolutely awful and they are uneducated.
My daughter and I went to this place and were horrified by the small cages the puppies were in. The puppies appeared lonely and had no toys in their cages. The next day we called to find out how they were treated. We were told by an employee that the puppies get an hour of play INSIDE the store each day. The rest of the day they are cramped up in small cages! Lastly we heard the puppies came from a breeder in IOWA.This is unnecessary with all the dogs available locally. Legislation in NY is currently being considered to make puppy and kitten sales in pet stores illegal. Fingers crossed it passes soon.
Let start out postive yesterday I went there and bought a filter and some bags of rocks for my new tank. Employee was stocking and I asked him for help with picking out a new filter. He helped me for a second then seemed like he was in a hurry to leave.Second day went picked out fish with a very nice lady and she was more than helpful. When I was waiting for my fish to be wrapped two other employees were talking in front of me about the customers who just left. It was very inappropriate and they said I hope the fish would have a nice meal. If you know the fish arent going to do well in the tank please be sure to atleast inform your customers. Then I mention how they had a dachshund and the one employee said I should buy it... I have my own rescued dogs, and I told her I am not interested in a puppy mill dog. She was quick to jump down my throat and say that the dogs arent puppy mill..I am annoyed of how much money I spent there in two days with rude and unpleasant workers asides for the cashier and the one lady who helped me with my fish.
Genuinely nice people and a great place for pets! Seeing a puppy out and ready play makes for instant smiles and they have a tremendous variety of cool fish and other fun pets. My daughter (6) begs me to go every other day. Please help this store survive the Amazocolypse!
Ive been to Pet World for years; mostly for fish, occasionally rodents. Ive noticed the quality going down hill now for awhile, but my visit tonight has completely ruined this store for me.Ignored when I enter. No other customers in the store, two employees chatting away with each other. I stood around waiting in the fish section for 15 minutes, waiting for an employee to help me buy a plant. The employee saw me and turned around to go talk to his friend. After waiting for 15 minutes (one employee at the register looking at his phone, the other talking to his friend), I left the store. Again ignored, no good bye, or have a good night as I walked by the employees. This is some of THE worst customer experience I have ever had. Not only did they flat out ignore the fact I was in the store, they didnt seem the least bit interested in the animals.Multiple dead fish in the tanks, algae growing in several, rodents that looked sickly, and dont get me started on the fact they sell puppy mill puppies, and often keep 2-3 in a small 3 foot grated cube!Never again will I return - and I have been going for years.
They had a puppy out to play in a pen with urine all over the floor, not cleaned properly. Other dogs in small windowed crates. Dogs look poorly groomed and ignored. Do your homework and insist on knowing where they come from. Overpriced dogs coming from large-scale breeders out of state.
This is by far the best local area for fish and small animals! Ive been going here for years and the staff has always been nice, though I definitely have people I prefer to others. These fish are so much healthier than fish from any of the other stores....and I have shopped around as Ive acquired and consolidated tanks/bowls over the years. PetCo I find has fish with conditions that almost without fail kill my other fish so PetSmart or Pet World are the only places I would go. Here the fish are healthy and kept in much larger tanks than PetSmart, with a smaller percentage of dead fish. There is always a more interesting selection and usually of fish above my level of attention, but really fun to look at. In addition you really feel like the employees are experts in what they are selling you. Their selection of tanks is very extensive and accessible. They also will take unwanted fish, which I dont know if other stores do. They get some funky fish in too...I think they had a lungfish once...I try and say hello to the puppies every time I come in! The puppies are sometimes out on the floor by the register for play time and they are so cute! I get some nibbles though. The current staff is very nice, there definitely has been change over; but the current employees know their stuff, or at least knows who the expert is for you to talk to :)
I’m fairly disappointed in Petworld especially after last night. I’ve been a long time customer and been going there for years. I started keeping fish when I was 10. I used to ride my bike to Petworld with my allowance to buy fish. I remember when they had the much smaller shop before they moved to the current location. I’m about to turn 42 yrs in 2 months so that gives you a idea how long I’ve been going there.I’ve bought at least 12 fish tanks in total over the years at this location most recently a 40 gal long and a 60 gal show tank. I couldn’t even imagine how many fish. This store has been going down hill for a long time. The fish selection is getting a little better in the past 2 yrs. they still have a bunch of broken tanks. Some you can hardly see in because the lights are ancient and need new bulbs. The tanks have been much cleaner than in the past. They hardly have a reptile section anymore. The saltwater section has been an abomination for longer than I can remember. As for puppy mills that I’m not sure about where they get their puppies from. Why not work with Lollypop farms and re-home some of these kittens and dogs in the shelters. Instead of having empty kennels 9 months of the year. Now that I’m completely off on a tangent. The reason for my rating. So last night was the worst. My son and I showed up at 7 an hour before closing. 2 employees working and we were the only ones there. No greeting when we walked in. Not a dealbreaker for me. We look around a bit and check the fish out. We wanted to get a new Betta and some of the other fish they had. At this point a couple of young girls walk in to look at puppies. Obviously not old enough to buy them. The one girl employee is chatting away with the girls for 20 min. I walk up to the front counter and mention to the guy we’re ready to buy fish. He nodded and that was it. We waited around for 20 min for someone to help us. I figured they guy at the counter would come back after he cashed out a couple of customers. Nope! At this point the female employee had walked up to the front counter and was sitting on the stool. I would’ve thought the male coworker would maybe mention people were waiting for some fish. Nope! We waited around for another 15 min and still no one came back. So we just walked out with nothing. I realize it was close to closing time but you had 15min. This isn’t the first time this has happened. It seems like I always have to chase someone around to get them to do their job.
Not Rock Beach Aquatics quality when it comes to aquarium supplies. SOME staff pass on opinion as fact, or personal experience as the only possible outcome even when evidence and research points another direction. That being said good location to grab food or check out the odd trade ins but know what you are going in for.
Came to this store in 2015 and bought a healthy Bichon Frise puppy. He was on sale due to it being Black Friday. Charlie (the puppy) is still going strong today! Overall the staff was friendly and the prices were good. The dogs seemed to all be in good shape and happy as ever!
Ive tried other stores in my area and the tropicals are sickly. I hesitated going here because of the other comments here. When I went here I found some gorges angles and bought all of them (8) had them for 1 month and they are fine. The staff was great and fast. I give this place an 9 (1-10) because i reserve my 10s for perfection. I also learned not to believe all reviews I hear!
The care for all the animals is terrible. The bearded dragon doesn’t have a large enough tank and the substrate shouldn’t be paper towels and the dogs and birds don’t have enough room. Go to country Max instead they are much cheaper and have more people that care and love their jobs. Just don’t go to PetWorld.
Kind of a hole in the wall pet store. They still sell puppies and kittens... Which I personally dont agree with. Not a huge variety of things. Im not entirely sure about dog/cat food selections - Ive really only been here cause the office I work in has a fish tank and we needed a couple things for it.
How they treat their dogs is wrong and you can’t sell a dog until it is at least 8 weeks old, some of those dogs are definitely not 8 weeks old! Those dogs whine and scratch at the door the whole time I was there and no animal should be treated like that, it breaks my heart. The customer service is always terrible and there is always at least 4 dead fish! Please go to a place that treats their animals right!
Great store for fish viewing / shopping. Ive always had a good experience in the Fairport location. Ive visited the Greece location twice, they have a nice selection, but the staff does not seem to have the same customer experience skills as the Fairport staff. Id recommend the Fairport location.
Went in there expecting to buy a puppy . One customer Cashing Out a puppy, no one else in store but me and my granddaughter. Rude when I asked Where the puppy came from and if it came with papers for that amount of money !!! After awhile the clerk said No, I asked and your asking that much ? I then asked where is the Breeder located at ? Iowa !!! I looked him and the lady that was shelling out $1400 or better for her puppy and I said they come from a Puppy Mill then correct. He hemmed and hawed and I said I have been getting prices from Breeder for a Maltese with papers for $800 and up and Malt-poos $300-$500 !! Please ask questions before you purchase a puppy here ..... Why are there not more Laws that Protect these tiny animals in this State ??? Greed..
My grandson and I were shopping in your E. Rochester store onFairport Rd lastThursday. I sat on some dog cushions and sank to the floor. Collin, the staff member on duty, was very kind and helpful. He even gave me a bottle of his own water. What a treasure he is. When I get my next dog you can be sure I will shop at your store. Thanks again to Collin
Dying or dead fish in tanks with healthy fish EVERY TIME I go in this store. Most recently I pointed out a DEAD Clown Loach 3 long that had been sucked into a filteration tube in the back corner of the tank. It was just bobbing up & down in the tube for the hour I was in the store. When I showed a staff worker he just laughed and said Oh yeah, that happens & did nothing to remove it. I try to tell someone & point out the tanks with the dead fish in them, their not always removed promptly.I recently purchased 3 fish from here and within 7-10 days one started to show signs of disease, Internal Parasites was the conclusion. I have since removed the fish and treated it in a separate tank. The tank I had put the 3 in is a VERY well established community tank with a Breeding Pair of Angelfish, Neon Tetras, Corydoras, a Bristlenose, & a few other others. I have recently lost a Neon Tetra since the sick fish & am extremely worried that my massive tank may be at risk now!Staff is usually useless when it comes to ANY information about the fish they carry, best bet is to talk to the owner. I tried asking something as simple as Does this fish get along with a community Angelfish tank? the response is Uhhhh then Ive asked Can you tell me if this fish is more or less likely to pick on other fish OR is it known to be a pest to Long Finned fish, such as Angel Fish OR whats the typical temperament of this breed of fish here?. Most of the time your better off doing ALL your research BEFORE you go to this store.Supplies are stocked fairly well outside of live fish & plants.
I am horrified. Went in to buy a gerbil and the lady picked him up by the tail... for those that don’t know, you can’t do that or else it may detach and it won’t grow back. And then she stuck him in some hinky dinky box and taped it up. Even if she didn’t do that, she was snarky and had the worst attitude. Stuff is overpriced also. Never coming back.

2022-01-25If you have fish (or want them), DEFINITELY go here. I had a sick fish (pic below) and brought a pic in to get help. Their aquatics team is incredible and helpful. They also tested my water because I brought in a sample. I get all my fish here as well as aquatic plants for my tank. If you have an aquarium question or problem, they can help. They’re also locally owned :)

2022-05-08Very nice staff in attendance there! The puppies are adorable. Theyre very playful; a little poodle mix was so cute and sweet and full of life. We played for the longest time. I tried to sneak away and I could see him peeping, trying to keep an eye on me. The others were just as playful and so sweet. Of course I wanted them all, especially that little poodle. My ♥️ stayed behind with him.

2022-02-19This store is clearly a puppy mill outlet. It is so sad to me that people are still encouraging irresponsible breeding of dogs. They lost any hope of getting my business by selling puppy mill dogs.

2022-05-10I bought my mini golden doodle here nearly 5 years ago. She is now s trained therapy dog and is sweet tempered and loved by my clients. Pet World was helpful and responsive and to me, the puppies appeared well cared for. When Macey became ill soon after adoption they covered her vet bills since I had just gotten her. I would buy from them again.

2022-03-13The weirdo with the beard who works the front counter is absolutely unpleasant to say the least. The employees who work in the fish area pretend they know what they’re talking about but you will literally get conflicting advice from EVERY employee who works there. We bought two pleco they both died within 48 hours. They argued with us about the return policy and tried to not replace the dead fish. Had our water tested they told us our water looked great. Second pleco dies, I call the store and the employee got nasty with me immediately and refused to let me speak to the manager. Absolutely 10000% will never be back

2022-04-29The staff is super friendly and very knowledgeable! We had a lot of questions about starting an aquarium, and the staff was able to lead us in the right direction! Support local!!!

2022-04-23Had a puppy that was soaking wet on the cold floor and instead of using a good towel on them to dry and dry them off they just put the wet pup in a kennel and mopped the floor, overcharging for a designer mixed breed puppy that already needs their first groom. Very unhappy with the treatment of this puppy.

2022-03-22Terrible place. They don’t care about the animals. Last time I went there, several of the hermit crabs were dead and there were several detached legs in the dry tank. I told an employee about it and she did not care, as reptiles weren’t her responsibility and they “were only hermit crabs.”

2021-11-30I can’t stand this place. The way the animals are treated here is horrendous. the dogs stuffed into small cubes to sit in fleas and feces all day everyday, no interaction, no socialization, no stimulation. It’s disgusting. 3,000$ dogs that will not get bought because of the conditions and prices. The other animals also look depressed and uncared for. It’s terrible and it needs to stop. Take better care of the animals and i hope they do not have to stay in these types of stores any longer.
