This is a cute little theater. We sat in the balcony. While some of the seats have a limited view up there (you get a warning before buying a ticket), ours was perfect. Great sound quality. I especially like this venue for a kids show, it is large enough to feel like a big show, but small enough to feel intimate. My only real criticisms would be, consider where you put the merch table- it jams up the door. Also, I think the meet and greet space was oversold.
There are many great performances that are held at Symphony Space. My wife and I recently went to The Best American Short Stories Of 2019 where three actors read three stories that were included in a recent anthology. The theater was packed and I sensed that the majority of the audience were frequent attendees of other events at the theater. Check out their website!
Weirdest theater experience to date, tonight, at Symphony Space -- and not in the good sense. The front lobby staff was so oddly rude to a family member with limited English proficiency we started recording it -- from odd phrases used to aggressive body language, about as unwelcoming as we could have imagined. We ended up eating at a diner around the corner, and singing for the others at the table instead ..
Went to see Fally Ipupa preform live here. It has an awesome and kind staff. The balcony seats are great, in my opinion, for viewing the stage unobstructed. They have a bar (Bar Thalia) down stairs and a smaller that closes early on the same floor as the stage. The Symphony Space is conveniently located at the 96th Stop of the 1, 2, 3 train.
Cute theatre space. Not too big, so feels small and intimate. The chairs are just moderately comfortable, if we had attended a show that was over 2 hours, it might have been too long for those seats. Otherwise, perfect for an enjoyable and intimate show. Plus, there are plenty of food options within one block of the theatre AND the subway is right across the street - both of which make this a very convenient location for a fun night out.
They have some excellent events, and the seats are such that it is easy to see from anywhere.I am pretty tall (510) and my knees did not even graze the seat in front of me. I am a womens size 16/18 and the seat was wide enough that I didnt even think about it until Id left.
I have been coming here for the Banff and Reel Rock film festivals for 2 years now. And its always fantastic! The space is large and well laid out, with good views from all seats. Its clean and well kept with friendly staff.Drinks and food depend on the events so I cant really comment too much.I would say that I would be happy to see a performance here any time.
A really nice, comfortable performance space with a cool bar. The staff was friendly and welcoming and the place seemed well-run. We did not care much for the Selected Shorts show we saw, but I would happily go back to see something else again at this venue-- nice to have a spot like this in the Upper West Side.
I was happy leaving the house tonight with my husband to attend and support my friend, the founder of the Strawberry One-Act Festival, when the rude and condescending ticket/door woman ruined the night for us. She impatiently yelled at me just because my phone screen was not bright enough for her to scan.Turn the screen brighter! Brighter!!! Brighter!!!!!! She yelled to my face as if I dont understand English.I paid less money to see shows at the Carnegie Hall and yet the workers are much more pleasant and accommodating.I dragged my husband after the first play because all I could think of was the nasty woman at the door. She ruined the whole experience for me.It was my first time at the Symphony Space and Im never coming back!
There are a few theaters in this building. We went to the one downstairs. It is a more compact theater but not tiny. The stage is a decent size - the dance troupe was able to perform no problem. There is a lighting booth and dressing rooms in the wings. There is an exit that leads directly outside.
Cool performance space but the procenium arches flanking the stage seemed to block more than expected. Hopefully the folks take that into account when staging their shows there. The seats in the balcony were angled for optimal viewing. And acoustics were good (although I couldnt tell you if it was amplified).
Nice venue for a concert. Good acoustics. Seats are comfy with a lot of legroom, a rarity for a theater in Manhattan. Garage across the street is run by Icon, with typical NYC usurious rates, we paid fifty bucks for 3 hours. If you can use mass transit to this location, the 1, 2, and 3 trains have a stop for 96th St right outside the theater. Recommended.
I like that this performing arts center is on the small side but its big enough for what you need and not so overwhelming. The space is clean, inviting and even has a little lounge area if you need a drink and bite to eat. I love that the bathrooms are clean and spacious and there is a Starbucks next door.
My Sunday community go to place! 9:30 am, the Quest. Bring your breakfast or something to share How was your week? discussion. 11 am service begins. Inspiring music provided by Broadway & off Broadway per- formers. Speakers on self realization. No Amen corner here. Life is what you make it. Think positive. Believe in yourself. DONT start your week with out it! Cordially invited to coffee & conversation at Whole Food or a tea/coffee/hot chocolate bar after service.
Symphony Space is a New York City treasure! My wife and I have been members for 15+ years and have enjoyed Selected Shorts, movies and concerts there. They have really expanded/broadened their offering and you see a lot more younger people in the audience. Definitely worth checking out their programming.
It was the first time that I ever attended to an or hestra.. I’m speechless with how skillful these young adults from Columbia University Orchestra are.. Woww!!! I really enjoyed this event.. Had a really great time... I must also give props to Jeffrey Milarsky( Conductor of the orchestra) which did a great job!!!
Went to see Patti Smith speak for One Book One New York 2019. The ushers were knowledgeable and courteous. The seats packed VERY tight so I was glad I was the 3rd seat from the aisle.Clean bathrooms. Clean floors. Good views even though I was sitting in the back (row R) and I was able to see Ms. Smith without craning my neck and the acoustics were good. What more can you want from a performance venue?#theater #showvenue #uws #nyc
It it was great until dr. Ruth came on... That brought the whole show down... Matthew is so contemporary and dr. Ruth is so in the past... Matthew doesnt need any help... He was fabulous on his own and his body language showed how uncomfortable he was as the show was not going in the direction he wanted it to go... Beginning video at the start of the show was great! Video on his Resort needs to be updated as it did not seem as professional as one would expect it to be... Needs new marketing team! Keep up the good work Matt... Youre helping so many people!
Pretty nice place, convenient location for public transportation, Performances take place in the 760-seat Peter Jay Sharp Theatre or the 160-seat Leonard Nimoy Thalia. Programs include music, dance, theater, film, and literary readings. In addition, Symphony Space provides literacy programs and the Curriculum Arts Project, which integrates performing arts into social studies curricula in New York City public schools.
The Education department here is second to none. They offer a program called All Write! to Adult Learners to enhance Literacy leaening. I love the fact that I applied and received acceptance into this program. I look forward to seeing the actors, working with other Educators, gaining exposure to intricate litetary pieces..The building is literally right in front of the train station. You cant miss it.
Symphony Space is a block away from the 95th street subway station. The cafe / bar is located below street level, and restrooms are on the same floor. In terms of offerings, Symphony Space offers Selected Shorts readings, concerts, movies and various other performances. The venue is cozy and welcoming, I would visit this performing arts center again.
Hey brah! I go here every year for my annual Warren Miller ski season kick off movie in November! Great place! Little bar/snack area to pre-game a bit before seeing some tubular shredding!! Woo Jackson Hole! Kinda bummer that it gets so cramped in the theater area (where they squeeze all the sponsor tables). Also. Hint: Dont tell anyone. But there is a bathroom near the snack bar in the lower level that doesn’t get so un-awesomely crowded.
Symphony Space is a wonderful multi-use space that hosts everything from film to author talks to musical performances. Watch for their curated film series (Kurasawa, John Hughes, Charlie Chaplin) and other special events. Their Thalia Cafe is also a good place to go for Happy Hour if youre in the neighborhood.

2022-05-28Beautiful venue. Enjoyed Ballet Nepantla performance. It was at times breathtaking and at other times heart wrenching, then empowering. Highly recommend!

2022-02-13Cool spot, do you want a performance with little worries of over crowded place then this is for you. Seats about 200 people with plenty of leg space. They do have vaccination policy and a wear your mask at all time.

2022-05-09Small place but nice! Bathroom is super small! They was on point with vaccine cards needing to be displayed before going in

2022-06-19Wanted to have a lovely night to watch a play on 6/18 to be told you need your vaccination card after it was said to the world they dropped the mandate. After taking my first shot I caught a bad reaction to it which traumatize me to not want to take the second. Now I still can’t enjoy life because a place like this doesn’t respect the rights of one to choose other wise. This needs to change.

2020-02-19Attended an event with my child. The theater is on the smaller side compared to others. The seats are comfortable and offers enough leg space. The mezzanine seats offer Good viewing from both sides. Food and beverages are not allowed. Bathrooms are clean. Offers a variety of events and shows for all ages.1,2,3 station very close (less than a block).

2019-06-01We went to see Emeline Michel perform and it was great! We sat in orchestra row K, in the aisle and we could see the stage very well. The seats were comfortable and there was plenty of legroom for most. The sound and lighting was perfect and didnt disappoint... just wish the show was a little longer!

2022-03-13I wish I could leave negative stars. We had tickets to see Helen Jane Long tonight but were turned away at the door because my wife and I arent covid boosted. We booked tickets for the show two months ago and at the time only being vaccinated and wearing a mask was required. On March 1st they updated their policy to require the booster however they didnt have the decency to notify anyone of the change, so we were turned away even though we had our vaccine cards and masks. Masks and vaccines are no longer mandated by NYC so I dont understand why they would require a booster even though it was never required by the local health department. We are sorely disappointed to miss the show and will be filing a complaint about the failure to notify us of the policy change with the better business bureau. We are disgusted with how this was handled and will not be back.
