BEWARE: Petqua has a no refund policy which is not posted anywhere in the store except on the tiny white notice at the bottom of the register. You dont know there will be no refund until after youve bought your merchandise.Dishonest by omission and active commission (lying!)
Local pet food store run by two sweet guys who strive to please fussy, over-informed UWSiders. Packed shelves top to bottom in a typical narrow storefront space catering to a wide range of fauna; if you dont see it, ask. They happily fulfill special requests. Prices are a bit higher than big online suppliers. The tradeoff is friendly, patient service and guidance. P.S. Say hi to the parrot in back.
This is a wonderful pet store that is well-stocked. I discovered this place recently and will be going to them for all my freshwater fish needs. They also sell seed by the pound for very reasonable prices, which is something you would be hard pressed to find in the area. I bought some guppies and they were leagues ahead in terms of health and energy than any of the fish Ive purchased at the chains in the area.
I actually feel bad writing this because the people who work there are super nice and exceptional. But the fish in the basement look horrible and in pain. There was one fishtank that had two bonded fish and you could just tell one was in horrible pain and its bonded fish would swim to me watching the aquarium then swim back to the dying fish and touch the fish and stare at me, I am not a fish whisperer but one could tell he was super sad that the other dish was dying, all the otheraother fish just looked weary depressed I guess its from being in such a dark and depressive basement and having dead fish floating and or on the base of each aquariums. I left that place wanting to call animal control. Super knowledgeable personel and friendly but those fish just brakes your heart. And also a bit too expensive. I hope review helps more as a critique for the place to have more attention to those fish rather than taken it the wrong way. That fish swimming back and forth and around its partner left such an impression.
Always a pleasure coming here. I want everyone to know that if you have a lizard/gecko reptile that is not eating BUY YOUR BUGS HERE. My girls will not eat Dubia from any other store. My girls refuse dubia from every other store ive been to. I have to travel all the way here to keep my girls happy and fed. After reading the reviews Im a little jealous I didnt get a hello from Mr.Parakeet, today he was tired, so I didnt want to bother him, hes adorable btw!!! This store also sells the most beautiful black betta ive ever seen. To find a pure black betta is not easy but this store has them.
We started keeping fish during quarantine.Been to Petqua several times since.Their fish all look very healthy and robust, in all of our trips I did not find any ich or dead fish in ANY of their tanks. We purchased 8 neon tetras. Over a span of the week 3 died, but that could have been either the nature of them or also me not acclimating that batch properly. I floated them.A few weeks later, we got 4 Cardinal tetras (we had gotten some Cardinals from another store previously)All 4, after drip acclimation are still with us and seem to be doing well.Only negative thing about their fish is that the water comes with duck weed. Gah!The staff is really friendly and knowledgeable. They answered ALL my questions. And a lot of the questions I asked, I knew the answers to, just wanted to see if they would sell me fish or actually give me good advice. They do seem to look out for health and best interest of the fish!Hooray! We also love the animals in the store :)
This is a cute little private business! Several birds and a large tortoise roam the store to add to its charm. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and I was able to find what I needed. Their aquarium livestock downstairs is also unusual and worth taking a look at. Membership rewards are offered here.
Definitely a good place to shop for feeders for fish and mice. Despite being a small size place, there is a downstairs level and the feeders are in good price range for someone like me that doesnt want to spend expensive absurd amounts of dollars for just a couple of mice and goldfish feeders. Definitely coming back again.
Petqua is a wonderful pet shop (almost like a small zoo with live birds, fish and reptiles) with repltile food (crikets is all I need) and reptile boarding! I have my chameleon boarded there multiple times with a fair price and good care. Highly recommend and love the place so much! Call them and they will love to help! Please stay alive and I will always come in to support!
Seriously, the best shop for my fish related supplies! Generously stocked, managed by two very helpful guys. I get personal attention, advice, and service. Minimum time waste, unlike the large chain shops, where I run around looking for people to help me, then the long queues. Is right by the 2, 3 line in midtown Manhattan, very convenient.
I received excellent service. They have a good selection of both male and female betta splendens and are experts on these fish. I brought my sick betta in and they diagnosed it and checked it’s water quality for free. Go downstairs for more fish and plant options. And say hello to the giant tortoise. Only complaint is the bettas are in small containers.
This is my neighborhood store. Personalized service like theirs you cant get anywhere in any pet mart. Sam and Ed, the owners are friendly and helpful. They knew the kind of dog food I take already the 2nd time I entered and were glad to deliver it to my home.I made a point to shop just there. This kind of personalized local stores is rare and we need to make sure they thrive and continue servicing us.
First, lets get the good stuff out of the way: The store has a reasonable selection of pet supplies. The downstairs where the fish are kept looks a bit dingy, but I think the tanks are reasonably clean. But.I know that large chains always keep bettas in spaces that are way too small - its the shame of the industry. But I expect a local fish store not to do that. Its disgraceful. Well, Petqua does it. And they not only do it, they keep these poor fish in confinements that are actually SMALLER than any of the chain stores near it. The bettas are actually in 6 oz plastic drinking cups. Like you get in a convenience store. The Petland has half-gallon bowls. The Petco uses those small tupperware things. But even those small tupperware things must be TWICE the size of the tiny cups Petqua keeps them in.And its not only cruel to the fish, its unhealthy. Fish pee and poop in the water, and the toxin levels in those cups must be sky-high. They are basically making the betta sit in ammonia until someone buys it. Which shortens the fishs life by the way. But maybe they think thats good, because then the owner of the dead fish will buy another fish, I dont know.I do not understand why stores cant keep bettas on display in small one-gallon bowls. The fish really needs 5 gallons, but 1 gallon would be reasonable until someone buys it and houses it more properly. But a cup? Thats disgusting.
I picked up an 11 inch 13lb sulcata back in April there. After upon making the purchase I had discovered it had a URI and a missing scute which I found glued back on the day I went to pick him up. The first time I visited was with my 9 year old daughter, after doing research on finding a sulcata, the scute was not attached. It was only on my second visit, calling the store before to alert them I was coming to purchase the tortoise, that the scute seemed to have been reattached before my arrival. Not to mention the amount of mucus coming from the tortoises nose which indicated an upper respiratory infection.Despite the shape this animal was in I was determined to purchase the tortoise as now the goal was to nurse it back to health. In addition, this was the very tortoise my daughter had her heart set on as we both are major reptile lovers.Ultimately, I spent hundreds of dollars on vet bills to have my tortoise examined, x-rayed and prescribed antibiotics which I had to administer with a needle. However, Im proud to say he is happy and healthy, and has grown since then.No hard feelings Petqua
Very bad experience. Ive been spending roughly $150 a month, at this store, and order from them the only kind of food my cat will eat. But they never let me know when my orders come in are condescending on the phone. When I show up and ask about my orders they act as if they dont understand even though Ive been ordering the same $150 of cat food, every month, for almost a year. The last straw was when I came in on Christmas eve, and the man behind the counter scrutunized my face and said I looked like something was wrong with me. I tried to ignore his rudeness and asked if my order was in yet and he continued his weird inspection of my face and decided to serve the customer behind me! Thats after a year of spending money in his store!! I decided to order my cats food online, from the company that makes it. I would never order from Petqua or enter their store again. I love my cat but there are other ways to buy the food she wants.
The worst pet store I’ve been to!!!! Came in for feeder fishes and was not able to leave with them , while the fishes were in stock. The floor staff stepped out for lunch and the check staff couldn’t get it for me. He refused to go downstairs because he didn’t want to! Won’t be going to this establishment anymore.

2021-12-28The fish section is kept in horrible condition. The tanks are full of algae and a lot of dead fish. I understand that they are a small business but doesn’t mean that they can neglect the fish tanks in basement. The staff are friendly but never wear masks which makes me feel uneasy to go inside the store or even ask them questions. Probably for dog and cat sections, they are doing better because I see they have well stocked shelves, that’s why I give them 2 stars.

2021-10-14My go-to local pet supply store. The staff are friendly and quick to try and help. Decent array of products but while they may carry a specific item their selection within that item may be limited (i.e. one tick remover, or one kind of nail clippers). Store was clean and tidy (though it may not look it since pretty products all over the walls is hard to make look tidy).

2022-06-27Petqua is a pillar of the community. Where would we be without them? I cannot imagine a better neighborhood pet store. They always have what I need, and if they don’t, they will order it. Simply the best.

2021-07-03I LOVE this pet shop a lot, especially for feeders for my chameleon. The owners are super nice and helpful and aren’t pushy when it comes to taking your time and shopping. I was also greeted by a talking parakeet that kept saying “hello”. The also have a downstairs section with fish, reptiles, HUGE dubia roaches, hamsters, guinea bigs, doves, turtles and you’ll be greeted by a ginormous 20 year old tortoise. The only reason i’m giving it 4 stars is because in one of the hamster tanks, there was no water in the water container and there were small roaches all over it. it made me feel bad for the hamster and also stressed me out quite a bit. nonetheless, this is a great store with great prices. oh! and they also offer onboarding for reptiles (everything included for $10 a day).Things purchased:10 dubia roaches (66¢ each)Reptile calcium with and without vitamin D3Reptile multivitaminSmall hornworms

2021-04-21I went back in december a little before closing time for the first time & i was really happy with the experience. i had a nice women help me test the water for free, i was buying fish for my 29 gal that i had just finished cycling ☺️ she escorted me downstairs with the tanks are. Even tho i supposedly went the day before they were going to add more stock they had a really nice selection compared to petco. all of the fish looked healthy, there wasnt any duckweed i saw some reviews mention that but i only say it in 2 or 3 tanks top, free of ick, not to mentioned they had a really nice selection of angelfish & guppies, had this nice little pea puffer too. i bought a chinese algae eater & a shoal of zebras danios for a good price & im soo happy bc they get along with my rosey barbs & tetras just fine the danios grew nicely. Im definitely going back to get a centrepiece for my tank. 🙂

2022-01-17After 4 years of purchasing bones for my dog every week, we received Teo batches of bones where the marrow was soft and squishy. When I mentioned this to the owners, they pointed the finger back at me as the only one who experienced this problem. After spending close to $1000 a year on bones for several years, they lost a customer. And now I’m wondering last time the health department visited that store. After being a local customer who believes in supporting local businesses, I now would tell people to avoid Petqua!
