This restaurant is off the beaten path with really good food and very friendly staff. We ordered for take out and the staff offered to bring our order to our car parked outside. The orders were very generously portioned except for the angel hair vermicelli (tiny rice sticks). There wasn’t enough but there was plenty of meat. Get the regular vermicelli if you need a bigger noodle portion.
Got the main pho (B1) and asked for extra tendon and tripe (additional charges). Total for it was $16, which is the regular price of a bowl elsewhere - but this had way more stuff in the bowl. Taste was great. Beef round eye had a really pleasant texture.Summer rolls had good proportions. Other places can have a huge amount of rice noodles inside.Complimentary spring roll was really savory - normally I dont care for spring rolls but I wanted more of these.Ive been to various pho places in Chinatown, Flushing, Jackson Heights. This one is my favorite.
I travelled around SE for several months including Vietnam. This pho spot had pho that tasted just as good as pho I had in Vietnam. It is insanely cheap for NYC and super authentic tasting, with large portions. I paid $15 including a $4 tip and took an entire container home after eating a lot of it, that’s how much they give you. I would give this place 10stars if I could haha
I realized that there is a location in Brooklyn, after I recognized one of the ladies working there. I used to go to the Brooklyn one all the time but the quality there has gone down in the past few years. It was my first time trying out this Chinatown location and it was so much better! My friend and I came in on a Tuesday at around 7. It wasnt too busy at that point. We were pretty hungry so we decided to order a bunch of dishes to share. This is what we had, which was definitely enough to feed a third, maybe even a fourth person:Shrimp summer rolls - a bit overstuffed with lots of other ingredients. I almost couldnt taste the shrimp. Wouldnt order this one again.Vietnamese style pancake (pork, shrimp, onion, bean sprouts, and green beans) - I didnt care too much for this. It was overstuffed with bean sprouts. I love bean sprouts and all but it would have been nice to see more pork/shrimp in there. Seems like love overstuffing with fillers here.Spring rolls with rice vermicelli - this is my go-to dish and they do it well here. The spring rolls are extra crunchy, and I like that the shredded lettuce is razor thin.Banh cuon (steamed rice rolls with pork, shallots, and Vietnamese sausage). This was my first time trying this dish and Im a little mad that I didnt find out about this sooner in life. It was really good. This was the one dish where they didnt skimp on the protein. It was also a lot bigger than I thought it would be. It came with four giant rolls.I saw they have bun rieu on the menu, which I cant seem to find very often at the Vietnamese restaurants in NYC. Definitely coming back to try that!
Never would have expected such great service and authentic Vietnamese food. This place is so hidden deep in Chinatown.I entered and the restaurant was empty. They let me sit anywhere I wanted. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. Once I ordered I noticed 6 tables filled immediately and soon there was a line. I got lucky. I’m also Vietnamese.Food: delicious! It’s authentic alright. I ordered a pho and it came with all the good spices and herbs. I also got a stir fry vegetables with tofu, which all asian homes make as a general meal.Atmosphere: casual and friendly. There’s more restaurants downstairs. The restaurant is clean and professional. Lots of red coloring everywhere, very Vietnamese. Vietnamese karaoke playing on the tv. So happy they aren’t mopping the floor while we eat.Service: so quick and friendly. Almost every waiter stopped by my table to say hi. The owner is a woman who was also helping me and she was so friendly and not jaded like many of these restaurant owners become.I’d return many times. After visiting other places I learned this place is special. They have a handicap of a location but they are one of the best.
This is a classic 2-star restaurant with a massive and mysterious menu. If you go, make sure to have a good idea of what to order - the selections are very traditional and often come with some unlisted ingredients. The vegan banh mi was solid, but the fried rice and pho were sub par.
The food was delicious. The fried calamari was... so good, I cant even put it into words, lol. The staff was so nice. I wish I remember the young guys name that helped my table... he was so cool to us. The piece de resistance, you can bring ur own drinks (BYOB). Loved this place. Im definitely returning.
Nice, easy and decent foodWent there for early dinner. Restaurant was empty but this changed while we were there. Half was asian. Nevertheless the joint became increasingly full we were not rushed to pay. Not always the case in NYC. We had 1x springrolls with meat, 2x steamy pho with pork, complimentary tea, coke, salty plum soda (interesting taste, I like) and 2x viet coffee (crazy with instant milk on bottom of coffee). Paid ~48.00, left with full stomach. Staff were friedly, helpful. Summary: All in all good experience, nothing exceptional but mot bad either.
My family will need a second try. A first, my impression is that the food was a little pricey. The place looks nicely decorated. When I got the order, the reality is that the portion is pretty good. My kids liked it. My only complaint is that the few slices of cucumber in my food had a fishy taste, so you can only guess what might have happened behind the kitchen door. I will try jt again after trying two other viet restaurants nearby and provide an update.
We came around 7:30pm. Seated immediately and given hot tea with our menus. I already knew I wanted pho so I ordered the combination with beef balls and continued to peruse the menu. Before I got to the end of the menu, the bowl was set before me and all the proper accoutrements.I always taste the broth first to see what needs to be added to get the flavor right, but I really think this could be eaten as is, hot and straight from the kitchen.Getting the food for take-away, the check and cashed out was just as quick as getting seated, ordering, and getting my food.If I could give more stars, I would.
I was excited to try new place for Vietnamese cuisine since they are so many around my hood. To be honest, I was disappointed of the info posted. The menu was not the same menu they offered at the restaurant. There was no BBQ lamb with lemongrass, I was going to this restaurant looking forward to order the BBQ lamb. Disappointed of the spring rolls too. The restaurant is new, they only opened threw months ago. Very clean, and love the decorations.
We have been coming to this Pho Restaurant 5 years now and we always love their food. The tea is good and they have wheelchairs accessible bathrooms and entrance.Menu is easy going and flavors of the food is good quality.Everytime I come to New York City I always stop here.
This place looks fun and festive inside. There is a big train sculpture in the back with tracks running forward on the side.I was greeted and seated quickly. A few seconds after sitting down I had a glass of water and the wait staff was standing at the ready for my order. I got the number 4 beef soup from the first page of the menu and the fried calamari, They also provided me with a salad. Before going any further, I have no knowledge of Vietnamese food. The salad was white sprouts and thyme leaves? With a slice of lime. It was different but good. The fried calamari came on a bed of lettuce, carrot sticks and white squiggly things with a side of sweet red sauce. I enjoyed these very much, they were crispy and delicious. The sauce went very well with them.My soup was good. I found out I do not like boiled tendon, its very squishy, chewy and sticky without much flavor. The different beef cuts were all good however and the rice noodles were nicely done. The broth was tangy and reminded me of chicken noodle soup somewhat.Overall I had a great meal for a small price that came in big portions. My bill was $16.00If I lived here, I would definitely come back and try some other new foods.
This is NOT the same place it was pre-pandemic OR they got a new chef. 3 stars because it seems the quality of food has increased but mayonnaise on a Vietnamese sandwich? And the beautiful shrimp salad which was in a bed of diff pickled veggies and in tasty fish sauce dressing was now on a bed of shredded dry cabbage although the shrimp were amazing - succulent not overcooked and grilled. The sandwich other than the Mayo was fantastic-the grilled pork- plentiful and juicy. The summer rolls not so great- didn’t seem freshly made - the pancake came apart and was dry. I will not give up on you yet!
This is one of the very few real authentic Vietnamese restaurants in the neighborhood. Not only the food taste AMAZING but the welcoming and warm atmosphere and most importantly the super friendly service will make this a great hangout place with your friends or families!
Clean environment and surprisingly friendly staff for a restaurant in Chinatown. Our servers were friendly with a smile. But most importantly, our food was delicious. My pho veggie soup was average, I wouldnt jump to order it again. But my boyfriend is still dreaming about the beef at this spot, one of his favorite Vietnamese spots hes been to.I also love the casual, nice ambiance the space has. Very calming and quiet.
Get the number 42 and 58, but always the number 42. If you dont know what banh xeo is, you NEED to know. Its a crispy, coconutty, fragrant crepe filled with shrimp, bean sprouts, and pork that you wrap in lettuce and Thai basil and dip into a sweet and sour sauce. This is one of my favorite things to eat, ever, and Pho Vietnam 87 is one of the places in NYC that does it best. You can tell how authentic [a Vietnamese restaurant] is if it has a number in its name. - Ali Wong | More illustrated recommendations on @emco_recos on Instagram.
My go to for Vietnamese in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Basic service and affordable prices. The Pho is great as are most all of the dishes I’ve had here - which is a lot!Kind of addicted to the Spring Rolls and Bun dishes.Large selection on the menu and many options. Funny train decor and you can often find Vietnamese music videos on the screens around the restaurant which is cool.
Having lived both in Asia and NYC for a year, I can say with confidence that this place has some of the best value pho anywhere in the world. The menu is ludicrously extensive, and over the course of 5 or 6 visits, I havent encountered a dud dish yet. On the appetizer front, the shrimp spring rolls with peanut dipping sauce are the best Ive ever had, period. The service is perfectly fine - youre not going to be waited on hand and foot, but if you raise your hand youll get what you need. The staff are unfailingly responsive and efficient. All in all, if youre in the market for a delicious, low-key, low-priced meal, this is a great choice.
We were trying to find a place in Chinatown to eat, but with so many choices it was difficult. We asked a local for a recommendation and was directed to this place. We were still hesitant, but very happy that we decided here. The soups and spring rolls were very delicious and filling, and didnt break our wallet.Nothing too fancy here, but clean and good service. Would absolutely go back. Good job folks!
I cannot recommend this place enough. The food was beyond delicious. Genuine, authentic Vietnamese food, paired with an authentic Vietnamese dining experience. The staff could not have been nicer and more attentive. We were in a bit of a hurry and told our waiter and he made sure to rush our order and helped us picked something that wouldnt take too long. Very well priced and again, incredible food. I went to Vietnam a few months ago and everything about this place reminded me of all the great food we had there. THANK YOU!
This place is great if youre looking for a quick lunch or dinner. I ordered a 5-spice chicken Bach My. I highly recommend this. It was so flavorful and full of well-seasoned veggies. Only issue I had was I didnt realize it had jalapeños in it. When I bit into it, I automatically knew.
We ordered pho ga(pho with chicken) and as Vietnamese natives, we did not recognize pho they served. Broth was flavorless, chicken was dry.We have also ordered spring rolls, they tasted like frozen ready spring rolls heated up in the microwave. The older employee (seemed like a boss/manager) and waitress did not speak Vietnamese, so it makes me wonder whether its an original Vietnamese place. The service was very poor and the staff was rude, the older dude stared creepily at us, and the waitress with short hair took our dishes before we have finished. After we left a tip (although the service was really bad) the lady took the tip and she waived to her boss and said that it was a too small amount.I would strongly recommend to search for other pho restaurants if you are looking for a real thing.
Went here one time with couple of friends. They charged me whatever #2 on their menu is and when it came out, they didn’t have beef balls. I didn’t know beforehand until the food arrived. They still charged me full price for the ingredient they didn’t have nor informed me about. Would I come back? No. There are other pho places in the area that are way better.
Went here for some lunch with some girlfriends after a 7 mile run. I ordered food which I enjoyed and then placed an order to go! Thats how much I liked it. They packed my food so well it tasted fresh the next time I heated it up. I will return and hopefully they have some veggie options.
One of the best meals Ive had in NYC in my first four months here. Also extremely clean place. I had rice and pork chops with cucumber and tomato for $7. It was excellent. And the sauces are out of bounds crazy good. Im from KC and Im very familiar with meats and spices as a bbq smoker. This place is 100% legit and an incredible value. Ill be back within the month Im sure.
This place is bad, terrible service , absolutely terrible attitude . Asked for warm water then the waiter was like you said “cold water “. Brought out hot water and told us to mix it ourselves , Asians like to mess with their own kind this is an example of it. 1 waiter for whole restaurant so we only can deal with her, lady with short hair. Also, contemplated between two dishes and instead of recommending, she rudely says so 15 or 5. Again very sad
Love the place and the decor is unique and gorgeous! I dont know if theres a story behind the little steampunk train hanging from the back of the restaurant, but it sure does give it quite a look. I always get the #7 through a friends recommendation and it never fails to taste delicious.
The decor of this restaurant is very interesting if you look up at the exposed ceiling. You can see a conveyor belt going from the front of the restaurant to where I assume is the back kitchen. The tables are big to match the portion sizes. They are very generous with their soup in the extra large pho bowls, which was flavorful.
Disappointing bon rue. 2/5. I saw the picture inside the menu and it looked super traditional. When I got the bowl, it was actually terrible. The crab meat was just in a ball, the noodles were weak, and the broth lacked the classic flavor. It didnt come with the appropriate vegetables either. You shouldnt be putting this on the menu. It was a travesty to have it on the menu.Banh xeo was also disappointing 2/5. The flour on the inside wasnt cooked thoroughly. It lacked chunks of pork and shrimp. The vinaigrette didnt pack any punch.I didnt try the pho, but Im hoping its at least decent. This is what I get for eating Vietnamese food in Chinatown.
Not great. I Liked the decor but was a bit upset about my bo bun. I asked for the no meat option that was on the menu, even though I am not completely vegan. Unfortunately the meat wasnt replaced by something else, as it is at more and more restaurants but the bo bun was just a bit sad missing something. + they forgot the mint and barely had any peanut. I asked for the mint but never recieved it. The veggie spring roll was not good either.Maybe meat options are better but there are certainly better places for bo bun in the neighborhood.
Another one of your standard Vietnamese fares in Chinatown with average pho and subpar service. The pho broth is good, but nothing memorable. I actually prefer the broths in Baxter and Grand Streets more. I also wish they would have jalapeño peppers. I have also tried the grilled pork chop over rice where the pork chop portion was meager. The pork chops were thinly sliced and a bit tough. The service here is also spotty, and they are unapologetic if they forget your order.
This is my go to Vietnamese place to get my fix of Vietnamese food. The place is very clean and has a nice decor and good selection of Vietnamese foods. Its very hard to find an authentic Vietnamese restaurant without too much Chinese flavor influence. There is a great variety and options to select for food from pho to boon to rice to seafood choices. My favorites and recommended are the pho, claypot fish and sweet and sour seafood soap dish which comes with rice. The food comes very quick and tasty.
1st gen Viet-American here. Ive probably been a couple dozen times. Go out of my way to eat here. Pricing cant be beat, flavor out of this world. Dish not enough people get - the Canh Chua Ca/Hot and Sour Pineapple Soup. One of Vietnams signature dishes. You get a massive portion, even with a small (serves about 3), and it comes with rice. Banh Mi is remarkably good. Pho pretty solid, better than most places that charge twice as much. 100% recommend.
The pho was very deliocus but the service was kinda weird. I asked for check they said yes but I waited and then I asked again then I got told to pay at the counter upfront. Then told me to pay 9 something then when I gave the money she said no its 10 something. Which was weird. I also didnt get a receipt at all so if the extra money was for tax where was the recipt. Then when I left the lady yelled where is the tip. I didnt understand there wasnt even a server to bring my bill to me and they already got extra money from me. I payed the extra money but I wont be going back. It didnt feel professional at all.
As a Vietnamese, I can be hypercritical with my pho. Went in hopeful and with an open mind but left disappointed. Broth lacked flavor, didnt cook for as long as it needed to. Could taste the extra MSG added for the faux savory effect...what a bummer. Ill go back to Pho Grand as my go-to.
Baby its cold outside, this will help...Pho...time to warm up and eat. If you are following at home went with #3 PHO- Dac Biet- big bowl with rice noodles beef soup, 6 different brisket, navel, frank, omosa, tendon & eye of round...nice and hot, really good just what i needed....also order #30a Goi Cuon Thit Hoac Ga Nurong- summer roll with grilled chicken, veggies and wrapped in rice paper.. 1st time ever having this and it was awesome...light , airy, nice char on grilled chicken and not greasy at all...definitely not like spring rolls sometimes... like this place will return...#meecheatsny #phovietnam87#chinatownfood #nyceats #nycfood #nycfoodie #chinatowneats #summerroll#pho
Disappointing pho after such high praise by other reviewers. I know good pho and this missed the mark in so many ways. The stock was cloudy, the sliced beef was of low quality, rice noodles were not fresh and fresh lemon instead of lime. I asked for fresh chilli and was given a jar of thickly sliced jalapeños - that was weird, no red chilli either?Lucky it was cheap!
One of the peeves of living in NYC where one can enjoy almost every type of cuisine in the world except a good Vietnamese food. Yeah, there are plenty of no so good, so-so and even just alright but never mother approved.Pho Vietnam 87 follows the prescribed theme in Asian décor of simple plain tables, art work and Vietnamese music playing in the background on the TV. The service was nice and laid back but quick.I was tempted to try the Pho but we decided to go for some noodle and rice dishes. We started with the Goi Cuong and then shared the Canh Chua and Banh Hoi Bo La Lot.So here is my other gripe. Goi Cuong is one of the freshest and easiest to start a meal but yet no NYC Vietnamese restaurant makes it right. It is a spring roll to those think it is a Thai dish.Thankfully, the Canh Chua (Sweet Sour soup with catfish) was very good. It had a nice flavor balance and plenty of fish but on to my second gripe. Rice is a staple in all dishes. In NoVA they just bring a big bowl of rice for the table especially with the soup. In NYC it all comes in tiny Thai style bowls.Banh Hoi is also another favorite dish of mine. It is complex and full of flavors. The steamed vermicelli was good as was the meat wrapped in pepper leaf with a nice grill was equally good. It all came out accompanied with all the usual sides needed for the meal. The dipping fish sauce was pretty bland and watered down.On the whole Pho Vietnam 87 might not be anywhere near the league of those in Philly or VA but if is way better than many of the Vietnamese eateries in the NYC.They got some things okay and others pretty good. I will need to come back to try the Pho here but already a good start….I would come back.

2022-04-12Friendly staff. I did not have my glasses and the print is very small on the menu. They nice waitress recommended yummy eats and was very helpful. My 7 year old son loved the soup even though they do not have the pho with the beef balls. The iced coffee was delicious - as were the spring rolls and soup. The prices were very reasonable for what we ordered. Surprisingly lower than other pho shops in Manhattan. My son and I will definitely return and try the other dishes!!!

2022-04-26Amazing food, great service and wont kill your budget. The decor/ambiance was wonderful as well but for me wasnt the deal breaker to begin with. Grilled chicken Bahn mi, great and I also had marrow which I paired with fish ball soup. 😅🔥 Delicious.

2021-11-25Great restaurant with fast service and very interesting train design in the back. Staff was very friendly and food was brought in very fast.We were served a teapot full of tea right when we sat down. Free of charge. Which was really nice because other restaurants (e.g. Golden Unicorn) charge for those.I really wanted a bowl of noodles with seafood, but all the broths listed in the soup sections were made with beef broth. When the waiter came in to take the order he said the beef broth can be switched for vegetable broth, so I did get what I wanted! It was really delicious. Every table has hoisin sauce, garlic spicy sauce and sriracha sauce, napkins, soup spoons and chopsticks. Did I mention the design? It is really interesting to see a train with the train tracks at the back of the restaurant… there are lots of bamboo pieces representing the roof… it is a great little place to visit for a night out. They have great atmosphere and especially great food!

2022-03-31Pho 87 is a casual Vietnamese restaurant on the edges Chinatown and LES. the restaurant is medium-sized, very clean, and has a laidback vibe. the menu serves up a familiar Vietnamese dishes—pickiest of eaters can find something here that they’ll enjoy. this is a good spot for groups, date nights, catch-ups for friends.stopped by here on an unusually cold night after a run. ended up ordering Banh Mi Thit Nurong aka the Grilled Sliced Pork sandwich. this sandwich was perfect. so flavorful—packed with meaty slices of grilled season pork, fresh veggies for texture and flavor, and the balance of sweet and savory is amazing. the roll tastes fresh and is served warm. this sandwich does not miss and you will not be disappointed with it. Grilled Sliced Pork Sandwich, $8.75 + tax + tipstaff is friendly. your food isn’t rushed. my takeout order was packed neatly.

2022-08-21My friend has very high standards for Vietnamese food and he was soo impressed by Pho 87. First of all, the service is incredible. They gave us free springs rolls and were very attentive. My friend was going to ask for more sauce, but before he could ask, they brought more out. So thoughtful. When the staff learned that my friend speaks Thai, they exchanged some greetings in Thai. Next, the food is great with great prices. We ordered the fried chicken wings, grilled meatballs with rice vermicelli noodles, and bun bo hue. The chicken was so crispy with the sweet thai chili sauce. The meatballs were so flavorful that I only needed to take a small bite to go with each bite of rice noodles. Does that make sense? My friend raved about his bun bo hue. He loved that the bowl had two pork knuckles and plenty of other meat…all for the price of ~$10. We will definitely be back!!

2021-09-16I tried the combination without tendon. The extra big bowl was not as big as I was hoping it to be. The Pho was very good though. Good meat. More noodles than at many other places.
