Windex in the disinfecting bottles?!?I have been a Planet Fitness member for 10 years now. I do not want to cancel my membership, but I am considering not coming to this location anymore. For the past several weeks beginning in March. Everytime I go to use the disinfectant bottles to sterilize the machines, they seem to be filled with WINDEX!!! I thought maybe this was just a temporary thing because something happened with an order/shipment of cleaning supplies, but I am disturbed to see that it still seems to be Windex in the bottles when there is still a pandemic going on. This is a very serious matter to me and should be to you all as well. I would really like someone to check this out and see what is going on inside the gym. This does not make me feel safe to continue working out here. The two other locations I work out at still have the same purple disinfectant the rest have so this makes it even more suspicious.
Planet fitness is awesome place. Stuffs are cleaning all the time.
Basic to the max. Little to zero service. Never paper towels in the rollers, often the spray bottle has no cleaning fluid left. People sitting on machines but not working out. People leaving weights and equipment everywhere, people grabbing or stealing paper towel.
The girl with the curly hair is my favorite team member. She was and is so sweet. Never too packed in the morning and they are always cleaning. Perfect gym.
The overnight guy is exceptional. He is super polite , a great gentleman and great salesman. This was my first time at this location and he was a great welcome . Handsome too
A little out of the way for me, however, awesome workout on a weekend morning as it’s possible to find free machines!Layout was nice, I like how the temporary locker is on the same floor as the weights and everything is one floor in a giant room. It makes it easier to go through my routine. I like how the machines here are grouped. The equipment is newer than the few locations I’m used to so I appreciate that.The patrons there at the time were good about putting weights back and everyone was nice. Some of the PF locations have less classy clientele with the entitled youngsters who like to leave free weights all over the place... but not this one!I don’t know if it was because I was there in the morning, there wasn’t the usual annoying humming drone of arctic tundra of icy cold air at some of the other locations and I loved that. Helped me focus on a good workout. Hope I can swing back to this place because the experience has been good so far.
First time joining planet fitness was at this gym. The place is clean and well organized. Definitely more than worth a PF black card membership.
The facility is bright and spacious - underground, but the ventilation is fine. I only use the cardio machines and there are PLENTY. Seems to be ample weight lifting equipment — not that an old lady like me would know anything about that!! Front desk staff are friendly enough!
So for the price you’re paying, this is very solid gym. At the times I was going it was never too crowded. Plus they give you little guide with hours and how many people is usually at the gym at each time. I’m not a work-out freak so for me, there is enough equipment. The down side is that I have to bring my own towels and shampoos etc but this is probably the least expensive gym in town so I shouldn’t complain. Plus they have tanning room and massage chairs 🙂
This gym has made it very difficult toEnd my membership during the pandemic. Can’t be done on the phone or with email but by mail only. Forcing me to go wait inline to buy stamps, exposing me to virus to end an auto pay they control. Sick friends and family and unemployment are enough to deal with than making stopping them stop draining my account when I’m not even in the city. They don’t care about customer service or their customers.
A great gym for the price. There is all the equipment you need for cardio and most everything for weight lifting. There are ample weight machines, dumbbells, and smith machines, but no olympic free weights so youll have to make adjustments if youre used to free weights. Overall, the gym is clean, the other guests are courteous, the staff are friendly, the price is low, the location is convenient, and the gym doesnt get overly crowded. I would recommend this location both to seasoned fitness practitioners and to newcomers who want to feel welcome at a gym.
Ive been going to the Canal St. Planet fitness for over a year now. It is by far the dirtiest gym Ive been to. The kids managing the place hang upstairs and dont come replace the bottles or tissues downstairs. The mens bathroom is horrible, always leaking water. And apart from that, the gym is usually packed around 6:30-7pm and has little ventilation, making it smelly (since it is in the basement and probably does not get cleaned well). Plus, the escalators break down almost every other day...FOR A WHOLE YEAR. Really recommend they get more attentive staff to clean the place and use better quality soap.
People there do not know what they are doing!! I came in to ask if I could get a refund after I cancelled and they said yes and told me to call to talk to the manager and they said they will do it. WEEKS LATER nothing happened and I called again just for them to tell me I can’t. Wasted my time and energy. Horrible communication! They took down my name and number. If they noticed that I can’t get a refund, shouldn’t they reach out and inform that they have given me the wrong information? Poor communication and management. I do not recommend!!
Out of town guest using my black member card. The gym is located in a basement so it can get a little hot. Every employee I interacted with was super pleasant, helpful and had a smile! Little things can go a long way!
A great, no-frills gym option at $10 a month! Pros: Always clean. A nice array of weight and cardio machines. I never have to wait long or at all to use machines. Very affordable at $10 a month. Cons: Closes at 7pm on Saturdays and Sundays. No classes offered.
I havent been here in weeks. Last time I went, I sat down on a machine and noticed blood all over it. Immediately washed my hands and went upstairs to staff where I showed them pictures of the bloody machine, they said they would take care of it right away. I spent another 40 minutes in the gym, not once did I see anyone go over to clean up or even look at the mess. I reached out to headquarters who forwarded my grievances to management of this club TWICE, and I have still not heard back. Disgusting.
I’m only giving planet fitness 2 stars because the staff/manager are nice and the gym is amazing for the price. The reason why I’m giving them a low rating is their billing issues. I signed up for the $10 a month plan but was receiving a $15 charge almost every other day. I went to the front desk 3 times in a row, the manager Carlos has no idea why they kept charging me. After the 3rd time he referred me to their corporate billing office, they couldn’t even help me. I walked straight to the front desk and cancelled my account right after.Carlos waived my cancellation fee and understood how annoying my situation was. Again, the staff and gym are good but the corporate billing issues are a mess.DO NOT SIGN UP FOR ANY PLANET FITNESS!!!
They don’t seem to believe in air conditioning at this location
Its 3 floors, theres almost at least 2 of each machine. The machines I liked the most there was only 1 of each. I had to share with strangers, which I dont mind. But you have to kinda rush the exercise which iant that great, you cant really go at your own pace. Me and a coworker went together. So it was 3 people sharing one machine. So if you do sets and take like a 10 second rest break. Its more like a minute reat break which really isnt good. But its clean. For a gym it smells good. Nice staff, friendly people. Btw dont get me mistaken they have PLENTY of machines you can use. Its really a nice establishment. I rate 5 stars for a fact. I felt comfortable here.
Great gym for locals if youre a okay with the basics. Its never too crowded, even around New Years, and I will admit there are some amenities, like massage chairs and tanning (if you buy the Black Card, like I did).However, if youre looking for hands-on training or classes I would recommend looking elsewhere, SoHo has no shortage or boutique gyms.
While traveling to New York I stopped at this planet Fitness due to the fact that I have the black membership which allows me to use clubs wherever I go. although it was an average club I would definitely recommend the black card membership to anyone considering a membership at planet Fitness. The in club perks are okay but the ability to travel and use a club while visiting outweighs the extra $10 or $12 per month.This particular club was just okay it felt a little cramped and dark due to the fact that it was in a basement of an older building. It didnt look as clean as some of the other clubs and I go to and this one had a much higher focus on cardio than it did on weights and stationary machines. All in all it was an average planet Fitness.My rating system consists of a 3-star being exactly what you expected and neither good nor bad. A 4 means something was extra special and a 5 means you were blown away. A 2 star rating was disappointing and a 1-star rating is terrible
I cant get enough of going to this particular planet fitness. The actual gym is only in the basement which means theres no need to do weights on one floor, cardio on another and calisthenics on another as plagued by many other gyms Ive came across. Workers are phenomenal and massage chairs, hydo message, tanning booth and red light weight loss machines on top of a great workout is superb. Also the shower and bathroom are clean. Dont forget about free pizza on the first Monday of any month and free bagels on the 2nd Tuesday of any month.
BEWARE! They make it hard work for you to cancel. They wont tell you, so youll only find out when you try to cancel: they only accept cancellations in writing or when youre in their gym.Its cheap for many reasons. Only smith machines, no barbells for squats or bench. Its difficult to find a bench or smith machine after work.Generally clean and staff are friendly. You get what you pay for.
Great guest service.I was at this location for a quick workout while in NYC. I needed an email printed imeadiately, Due to being after hours there was no where close to print it out. I told the desk receptionist Yani my problem. After a quick conversation she kindly helped save my day. I know what I asked was way above and beyond what is required of her or Planet Fitness. Her kindness is a difference maker at the front desk. As a small business owner It is a person like Yani who can really give a place a positive vibe.
Im from Jersey, work in Manhattan but once I started going to planet Fitness on Canal st. It was a big difference. Because not only of the time difference but more dumbbells 65,70,75lbs where other only go to 60lbs but even different machines and stair steppers which other planet Fitness dont have. Environment is peaceful and large staff is pleasant and positive, always cleaning and making sure guess are relaxed and invited.Thank youChaunta Godfrey

A great price for a city gym that gets the job done with no frills. Could be better about having a bit more equipment like stretching mats.
3 locks were cut and valuables stolen out of the lockers inside the mens locker room during different times on the same day. Staff was alerted each time and while they did notify police no effort was made by the staff to alert and communicate with customers of these crimes in order to help their customers be more aware and take extra precautions to not become another victim. When I asked the manager why customers were not alerted she simply stated we (Planet Fitness staff) dont follow that method, there are signs up which say we (Planet Fitness staff) are not responsible for lost and/or stolen property. When I asked if this was her own policy or Planet Fitness corporate policy she simply restated we do not follow that and would not give an answer regarding whose policily it is. Basically, the manager does not feel responsible at all to communicate and/or alert customers in order to help keep customers safe from becoming victims of crimes which she and staff might be aware of happening inside the facility just because there is a sign posted. I take great offence to this policy as it shows poor ethical, moral and human nature. The impression I have been given is the image of the facility outweigh the safety of the customer. Communication should be paramount in any business model especially between staff and customers and especially where customer safety is concerned. If you frequent this facility be aware this is the managers stance concerning you and your valuables.
What a joke, Planet Fitness does not care about you or your health. During COVID shut down, I moved and am not near a gym. They want me to go to the gym during the still existant COVID era to cancel my membership and sign forms? Whos health is Planet Fitness really looking out for?? I should take a train to my previous gym just to cancel my membership?? They seem to be able to confirm all sorts of information when you show up without your card, but they cant cancel your membership.
Not the worst gym in the world for the price, but the womens locker rooms can sometimes be pretty messy especially in the shower area. Lots of lockers and clothes hooks are broken too. Very difficult to get the shower water hot. Also lacks a few pieces of key equipment: no rowing machines, no yoga balls.
Terrible Gym. Takes advantage of students and doesnt explain proper cancellation procedures. Kept charging a student when away for a semester. Wouldnt put their account on hold. Manager not helpful at all. Customer service is appalling.
Locker room lack a lot of cleaning. Not good equipment and a lot is missing when it has some that is no good for your body. Those tvs in the cardio equipment are quite annoying. If it wasnt for the discount on reebok and the several locations even the 25 is expensive for the lack of gymness
Good gym for your money. However, BEWARE OF YOUR BELONGINGS. There was 8 Incidents where the lockers were broken into in the SAME DAY!!!! Just protect your valuables and keep them close. Dont leave anything in the lockers!!!! They just took my money and left everything else in the changing room. BEWARE!!
Gym was fine when I was a member. When I moved to Australia though Planet Fitness made it a nightmare to cancel my membership. All the time they continued to bill my account, despite me urging them for 2 months to cancel my membership. I wasnt allowed to cancel it online or over the phone. I had to sent a written hardcopy letter to them from Australia, and they said they never got it. They said they were worried I wasnt the real account holder, despite providing all relevant details.Cant help but feel this is an underhanded way to squeeze more money out of members...
Its a good gym. Only two real problems:1. The music piped through the speakers? Its like listening to animals being tortured. And its loud. God, is it loud. Pretty much every single person in the gym is wearing headphones. Did I mention the music is loud? Because it is. Why is music being piped in at all?2. The mens lockerroom had 35 lockers with locks on them. At the same time, the gym itself had about 15 men in it. Most wearing headphones to block out the really, really loud and awful music. Simple fix? Get a bunch of locks. Barcode them. Make customers check out AND THEN check in a lock each visit. The security lockers in the exercise room are under video monitor so anything valuable can go in there with a from-home lock. If the barcoded lock is out for more than 4 hours? Flag the account. Any non-PF locks are simply cut off (Home Depot sells boltcutters) and anything in the locker is confiscated by the staff.Overall, its really, a very good gym. The staff is friendly enough (not too cloying, not too surly). The music, which I might not have mentioned, should really be turned down a wee bit, like to zero, because its really, I mean really, bad. Just garbage.
There were a lot of machines that didnt work but didnt have out of order signs on them. The paper towel dispensers and spray bottles to clean the equipment after use didnt work well, leaving equipment to be unsanitary. I never saw an employee in the work out area once during my hour and a half there. Overall, I left feeling pretty disappointed with my experience.
No clean and the massage machine is not working properly
I’ve been in some Planet Fitness around the city and I can say that this is the one with the worst customer service. Unfortunately I opened my membership here. In April 2nd they charged me “their annual fee comision” TWICE in less than a year !! I went there and the manager told me it was a mistake and that I had to wait between 7-12 business days to get my refund, so I did. I went back because they didn’t give me the refund and the employees told me that I had to talk directly with the manager and he never was there when I went and today I finally saw him I he told me that he didn’t know what happened that I have to wait 7-12 more business day to get MY MONEY BACK ! It means that I’ve been waiting for almost TWO MONTHS to get my money back and that in case I get it. Be careful, this people do play with the customer’s money and time.
This has to be a depot for the homeless. Ive been coming to this location for over a year and a half and its progressively gotten worse. The lockers have locks on them constantly. I usually arrive no later than 5am every morning. The gym is empty yet there only a handful of lockers available.When you open the lockers they are filthy. Filled with used waste. From underwear,socks, paper towels, etc. Peoples clothes are in the lockers. Packed to the top. Homeless people sleeping on the benches in the locker room. The icing on the cake. The undying multitude of fleas,flies whatever in the shower stalls. People can kill them on the walls. You can tell that the showers stalls dont get washed daily because you see the crushed ones still on the walls.This location is plain filthy!!!
I cant believe this location! They are beside a hotel so they know they will be getting out of town guests but arent able to look up your account unless you have your barcode number?! Who knows that by heart! Ive been a member of a PF in GA of over a year and cant go into this location bc I dont have my keycard. Im now having to use the hotel gym when I am feet away from a PF and have a membership there!! I recommend you figure out how to look up people without them having their card! You are connected to a hotel!! Hint, ppl will be traveling and not have their keys! Guy at the front was less than helpful. Im not paying $5 to workout at a gym I already pay for!! Appreciate the help.
First-time visiting I was impressed! It was early but the place was clean and tidy. Ultra new equipment that nobody knew how to use (I mean the bar code trackers). Other than that it was a pleasure. Ill visit again and recommend the place!
Clean, organized, and good amount of machines and weights. Space gets filled, but never to an unmanageable amount. Its not as nice as other PF gyms.
Planet fitness is a scummy business. They make it a huge hassle to cancel your membership. The staff at is location are great, but its a shame theyre forced to follow procedures set up in bad faith...
Closing at 7 on sundays. Kinda sucks. Also Wi-Fi is nit working and no internet service since its underground. So if you are relying on YouTube for music , good luck! Bathrooms are not the cleanest that I visited..overall quite disappointment.
Crossfit special equipment that is not available at other Planet Fitness Locations (heavy ropes, weighted balls et al) spacious but as common of many a PF location it is on a basement so no natural sunlight. Spacious, though.

I had really bad experience few times here. I was persistent to give them 3 more chances, but it really bad customer service, they give you one information and then they hide when you call them out on it and then the new representative tells you its not the case. The worse thing is they charge you left and right without you knowing. And of course no way to refund as they are lying so much. Really bad energy and worse customer service.
It was fine for no frills gym, but some of the equipment needed servicing + there was no standard bench press free weights.
People complaining about petty stuff like loud music, get some earphones like most normal people do, staff is very friendly and i enjoy working out here. Just wish they had more of the long lockers.

I was truly shocked when I realized that my bag was stolen and even more shocked when they said they cant really do anything about it. Be wary of your belongings, there are thieves in this Gym.
Ive been to a lot of planets locations and even though the staff was nice, this is by far the filthiest gym Ive ever been to. Pick a diff location, trust me.
Its fairly bare bones, little in the way of free weights, but the staff is attentive, always cleaning and the machines stay in good working order. All for almost nothing in dues each month

Opaque billing services, womens toilets ofren lacking cleanliness, substandard customer service, they do not patrol the 30 minute express exercise section like they say they do so random people using weights when not doing the circuit.

2022-01-06It’s a complete planet fitness gym. You get what you paid for. 10-25 dollars. So I had no free weights but is still a solid gym to maintain your body while your on vacation. they do ask for vaccine card and ID but that’s just normal in nyc.

2022-06-20This was a good gym but now its horrible. The air conditioner is barley on so its hot and muggy in there sometimes. The escalator is always out making hard for people to walk up to leave the gym. Also the music is so obnoxiously loud that you can still hear there music with your headphones on. And theres kids everywhere not using the machines due too planet fitness making kids go there for free for the summer. I had to cancel my membership is was just too much.

2022-01-11UPDATE (Jan. 2022): Shortly after the original review, staff reached out to confirm they would address these problems. This location has really responded to complaints about cleanliness and there has been a noticeable change for the better! They have upgraded their cleaning products and appear to have hired additional staff to improve the average level of cleanliness. Its become a lot more pleasant to be here given these changes. They have also updated a bunch of cardio equipment recently. I appreciate that theyve been responsive to feedback!-- Original review:The Canal St. Planet Fitness is well-equipped with all the essential machines and free weights, staffed with friendly employees, and conveniently located. Its a single-level gym below ground, so while there are no windows, its spacious and never really crowded. The very low membership fee and flexible cancellation policy are great. I generally enjoy coming here.However, it is by far the filthiest gym Ive ever been to. Some of the things Ive seen, especially in the womens locker room, are just unspeakably horrifying (as a mild example, the photo demonstrates how cleaning supplies are typically stored). There is always some manner of excrement, bodily fluid or mysterious stain anywhere I look. Getting water from the fountains, now covered in tape and never cleaned, requires fighting a gag reflex. Even the soap smells god-awful and Im pretty sure the sprays for wiping down equipment have no actual antibacterial properties. And this isnt a speak to the manager type of issue: the whole branch is in need of some serious renovation and deep cleaning. Im honestly not even afraid of contracting COVID here because the microbiome must be so potent as to create its own sort of lethal disease.

2022-02-04Serviceable and clean. No frills, but a perfectly fine gym for $10-20/month. Would be willing to pay an extra couple bucks a month for clean towels instead of paper towels. Ive never showered there or used the lockers, as Ive heard stories.

2021-12-18Planet fitness is one of the worst and scammiest of all the gyms. They make it as difficult as possible to cancel. If you got your gym membership and moved out of state well youre going to be a member now until you can send them a telegraph.. no joke.. or a notarized piece of mail. Now who does that? A company thats not interested in providing a service but one whos only interested in money.They will tell you its no hassle and its easy to quit but its not. Last time I checked I dont need a financial trap as an incentive for anything. They also have a bunch of new Draconian rules. Youre basically not allowed to lift weights or do anything that makes any of the weirdos that are watching you feel uncomfortable.Companies like this make me feel sick to my stomach, embarrassed to have been duped and angry whenever I think of the disconnect between a desire for happy customers and the bulk of their operations.Avoid at all costs. You have all the means to work out by yourself. Their machines are Nautilus machines and those dont give you the kind of support muscles that free weights do. And most likely yours will go out of business like mine did making it even harder to quit.

2022-01-26Not the best gym but you can get all you need to get your fitness goals at a budget. Had $250 stolen from my locker however. Do take the keep your valuable out of the locker sign serious.

2021-12-29Planet Fitness on Canal has all the basics you need to workout, nothing too spectacular… My only issue is cancellation. It has to be in person or through mail which made things inconvenient. But other than that the gym and staff aren’t too bad.

2021-02-26The prices are great and the workout area does the job well. However, a significant number of guests walk around without masks on or with their masks only covering their mouths. Sometimes staff members walk past these people without saying anything. As a result, I often dont feel safe while working out. I dont think the burden of enforcing the Planet Fitness mask policy should fall on the patrons, and I hope the staff will pay more attention to this issue in the future.
