I brought a bag of clothing that consisted of items and brands that their website said they were purchasing that were in great, almost new condition. I waited in the store for 45 minutes to be told they were not buying anything because theyre being super selective and going through their inventory. When they handed my bag back all of my clothes were just thrown back in and not folded like I had them when I brought them to the store. Dont waste your time coming here like I did.
The items are a bit over priced. The cashier was super friendly, but my issue is with the store not her. I took two bags to be donated but they didn’t even look through them, and told me no. A complete waste of time. The store was extremely full of really used name brand items, but not really any not so used lower brand stuff. I think they are too brand selective and it really bothers me because taking trashed name brand items, painted name brand items but then telling me no for clean, barely used lower brand items is bizarre. Also if the store is so full, they can’t take items, then I should have been informed upon entering, not my second trip there. The times they have taken my items, they offer very little in return and it’s always store credit. I don’t really like this place anymore. Every time I come it’s a disappointment. They can’t even offer donation receipts for clothing, so I’m sure they are getting a huge tax write off from using other people’s clothing.
I would never ever go to Platos Closet again. They gave me 25 bucks for 12 like new or brand new items. 4 items still had tags on them and I paid way more for them new. I was so mortified and insulted I just left the store. My friend returned to store and seen my items on floor all marked way up. Dont go to this place unless u want to get really ripped off. Go to JCPenneys on clearance rack n buy brand new clothes for less.
I frequently shop in numerous thrift stores within the Albany and surrounding areas. To me, thrift stores support our communities and provide customers the opportunity to get a bargain from clothing someone no longer loves! I love to walk into a thrift store and find an awesome deal just as others do too! It’s the thrill of it all... however on a particular day I decided to stop into Plato’s closet located on central avenue in Albany. I’d never been to a Plato’s closet and thought I’d stop in and check out the store. As I entered the store I encountered two male black gentleman talking amongst themselves about their personal business. Their appearance was hindered by the overwhelming scent of alcohol! I literally held my breath as I walked by. They were selling their clothing on this particular day and awaiting for the yes/no of their items to be accepted. There were three employees behind the counter, two young girls and a middle aged woman; none of whom even acknowledged my presence in their store?! I wasn’t greeted or welcomed. I casually browsed the racks of clothing and I will say there are quite a few racks. Either they’re not promoting good business or they have an extremely high turnover of clothing. I saw an item that caught my eye however upon looking at the price they’re asking for it, I quickly deterred and changed my mind!! I refuse to pay $22 for a pair of jeans when I know I’m able to go to my local tjmaxx and purchase jeans in the price range of $12.99 - $19.99 with that said... I left those jeans right where they were! On the clothing rack!!!!!!!!The staff wasn’t friendly at all, and only seemed to be interested in offering a customer $2.00 for a shirt?!Yet, they’ll price that very same shirt for probably $10.00I understand it’s a business however it’s the customer that gives you the business by purchasing clothing!!!I had thought of selling my clothing to this particular Plato’s closet but my overall experience and knowledge of other thrift stores tells me to consign my clothing instead elsewhere! The store had a feeling of being dirty and the few customers in the store looked like they were selling their clothing for their daily ‘fix!’ of either drugs or alcohol after all it’s a quick way for them to earn $10!!I will NOT return to this thrift shop ever!!!
I just helped a friend bring a huge canvas bag to the local location and we walked out for a 1/2 an hour. Upon returning to the store the gentleman inside was finishing up looking through the items while the canvas bag was still sitting there, mostly full. He only accepted 8 items and passed on the rest of the bag which most of the clothes still had tags on them! She only received $22.50 for clothes that were worn once or not at all. Do not fall for their scams!!!!!!
Im a returning customer after a couple of years...I used to shop here all the time but over time, the employees were rude and the quality of clothes went down hill, major.I heard there were new owners and decided to give it a second chance; and I am so glad I did!Employees were very nice, and even greeted me when I walked in the door! You can tell the quality and selection of the clothes is 10x better. Im excited to go back and see what is new! Thanks!
I have been to other Plato’s in other cities I have lived in and had no issues but this one has the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. They only take clothes for cash if you come right at 10 AM when they open if not they only give you store credit. Bought in a few pieces I still have the tags on them and they didn’t take them because they said that the clothes I brought in was too dressy for their style. Not surprising since this place smells like a used shoe. Then when I came to pick up my things they accidentally got my stuff mixed up with someone else and the manager yelled at ME about it! So in order to avoid drama I just had to leave with more stuff then I came in with, aka the opposite of what I wanted to accomplish. The worst part is I only got $10 for all my trouble! Definitely not worth it! Donate to good will! Your time and gas money is worth more than dealing with these people.
Once again, I thought I’d stop in and check out the inventory. The clothing is definitely overpriced and the overall appearance of the store was dirty! After I browsed and had my hands on a few items I quickly reached for my hand sanitizer because of how the clothing felt to touch it. The atmosphere reminded me of the 1980’s where someone who needed a few dollars cash money on the spot could sell their blood to get money just as the clientele who bring in clothing are able to get cash money the very same day! I witnessed customers who appeared with an undesirable appearance and took cash money.Since the establishment outright buys clothing it’s a fast way to gain cash and some of the customers appeared as if they needed cash and appeared to maybe be in a particular situation seeking cash immediately. People of all sorts shop thrift storesNot to say that their criminals however ——I’ve been told a new owner has established the store however the attitude and characteristics of this particular Plato’s closet is awful!!! Absolutely!!!Especially the clientele relocated right in the heart of downtown Albany!!The clientele is from all sorts of lifestyles as we all are but it’s obvious when you walk into this Plato’s closet.Unfriendly owners, who seemed to only care about taking in clothing for a few dollars and generating their income!!$2.00 paid to you for a shirt/ their profit $5-8 depending on the BRAND!!!Have a garage sale and sell your clothing!!!Donate it for a needy individual or family!!!There are better, cleaner thrift stores located in Albany that ACTUALLY assist and help people who are underprivileged and need assistance. Both, The Salvation Army and Goodwill are very good resources for thrift store shopping located in Albany [ particularly Goodwill, which is also located on Central Avenue. The address for Goodwill is:1 FULLER ROAD just down the street, located on the corner of Central Avenue and Fuller Rd. that actually benefit the people who need it!
Terrible. They make it impossible to do business with them. They basically only offer store credit now and lets be honest, who wants that? I had brought a large basket of clothes in right when they had opened in the morning, like I was literally the first person to walk through the door. They told me to call back later to check on the status of they buy. So I called back around 4:30 and they would offer me $7.50 for the clothes I brought in.... I was in shock. I brought a large basket in and all of those clothes were in very good condition, some not even worn! Then they proceeded to tell me that I had to call back later to see if they had the funds to actually give me the cash. Like REALLY?! If they didnt, they would only be able to offer me store credit. The whole system is ridiculous. Ive sold clothes to them before and had walked away with $60-100 in the past, buts its obvious they have changed. The people who work there arent even nice. Theyre rude and they make it seem like youre an inconvenience to them. All in all, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. Honestly, just donate your clothes to The Salvation Army or something like that. It saves you from going through all that BS and is honestly more rewarding.
Waste of time! I came here with a garbage bag full of clothes. I was told that at this time in the day I could only get store credit. So not only do you get to sell my clothes but the money I get can only be spent here. I agree on store credit because I didnt have time to come back another day where they may or may not have enough money. They tell me it will take 20 minutes to go through my clothes so I decide to wait in the store. It ended up taking 40 minutes to go through one bag. At the end of the 40 minutes they only accepted THREE items and offered me $8. Most of this stuff was name brand and some even still had tags on them. Ridiculous & useless, I should have saved my gas.
I used to come here all the time in 2015, I bought alot of items at Platos on Central Ave. I have an amazing Steve Madden purse that I still use all the time, when I bought it it was perfect. I hadnt been there for a while (like years) and went in a few weeks ago. There was like nothing there, no purses...the ones they had were totally beat and out of style. They had a style of Michael Kors purse hanging up on display that Ive been wanting for a while and asked the girl to take it down. It was in disgusting condition!!! I cannot believe they even bought it!!! It had a huge scratch on one side and a bunch of food gunk on it...wanted $35 bucks.Nope. Then I heard the staff on the phone saying they give store credit to a customer. No wonder. They are scraping the bottom of the barrel but at the same time give people a hard time about what condition their clothes are in??????? Ive sold my clothes there and got a low amount of money for stylish gently used stuff and asked if was selling the Michael kors on my arm???I was so disappointed to see the condition of things in the store now! I was a faithful customer, but sadly Platos fell off. R.I.P Platos
I just felt funny vibes at this place. The owner/manager was trying to be nice but it didnt come off as genuine. Just felt uncomfortable being there. The previous management before these people never made me feel that way. I will never be going back to that location again. Plus the merchandise is a little over priced if you ask me.
Dont waste your time here.... I brought in 2 full laundry baskets of name brand clothing. There was probably about 75 items between the 2 baskets, most of the items were within a year old and some had never been worn. I was told they would give me 10 dollars for the 5 items they wanted. Everything else was according to them worn out or too old, and then I was told they only accept certain name brands. They also changed their policy to only let a certain # of people sell clothes per day. They took 3 pairs of jeans and 2 sweaters, those exact jeans are selling for 20 dollars and they gave me 2 each... better off selling online or donating them to a charity. Lastly after all was done they asked me if I wanted to donate what they didnt take to them ... why so they can keep it and sell it ?? I dont think so ... so dont waste your time here
So I walk into Plato’s to drop off some clothes, left the clothes come back and when I can back this older blonde lady with glasses was cashing me out and I asked to see what they wanted to take from what I brought?.. she walked back and started to get get annoyed for no reason and then I asked if I could have my bag I brought in and that’s when she was very rude and started talking to me very rudely and she ended up walking away. I asked for the manager and he didn’t do anything about it. Gave me a card for a coupon? And said sorry and she came over and started yelling again about god knows what. Literally asked two questions and this lady went off. Never going there ever again.
I used to go to this place a couple years ago and the staff wasn’t that friendly and the place was pretty messy but now there are new owners and the place is completely different! The owners are so nice and so is the staff. They also have way better brands than they used to and I heard they have the most sneakers in the whole capital district! Would give 6/5 if I could!
I have never experienced anything like the rude customer service at Platos Closet on Central avenue. Absolutely the most unfriendly place to do business. I will never step foot in the place again. The store cashiers obviously hate their jobs because they bark at the customers when they walk in the door. And dont try to bring in brand name items to sell because they will either not take them because it wont sell or they will cheat you. Yet they dont hesitate to ask if you want to donate! Save yourself the headache and dont bother going there so you wont be disappointed! Horrible! Stay away!
The store itself is not the problem at Platos its more like the customer service. Some of the girls they have working there are rude especially if your selling something to Platos They act as if They Are personally coming out of pocket and paying people for what they bring. I have brought good quality clothing some brand new, some fairly new some old and Ive even brought items that I recently bought from Platos and was denied. Sad part is Platos Is A Second Hand clothing store.
I have never had a problem with platos closet until today. I brought in the best clothing I have ever tried to sell and I had to wait five hours for them to look through three bags of clothes all for them to say my clothes are too small and they can only give me 7.50. The lady was completely rude to me when I dropped the clothes off because I didnt want to shop. I find this ridiculous!!! Do not go to this platos closet its a waste of time!!
You can f8nd good deals on a lot of clothing. But when they buy yours it depends on the person if they will take it. Some people will take anything any condition. Others Will not even take perfect condition things. And for my big footed friends they most of the time only sell shoes in smaller sizes. I can barely find anything close to a size 12. So its a good place to check from time to time.
I would not ever come here to buy or sell stuff. Rude employees who need to learn to how to speak to customers, especially when making claiming my either freshly washed or never used clothes needed to be cleaned...when in reality it looked like they were understaffed and hadn’t even looked through my bags after I waited over two hours. And the prices they offer are way to expensive for what they buy them for. Worst platos closet I have ever been to
Absolutely awful. the girls are so rude and think that they are better than everyone. they normally have a list of things that they are looking for, two things on the list were Victorias secret and leggings brought in my gently worn Victorias secret leggings and they were too worn. they were in good shape and i would consider buying them if I was in the store and found them. I thought it was weird because I have sold quite a few items with major holes to them. the girl had failed to notice the huge hole in the armpit of one shirt. they would take the ripped clothes over the new with tags clothing. I had a coach wristlet with the tag still on that i had bought discounted, brought it next door to clothes mentor(who shares the same owner, i believe) and they said theyd give me $30 for it, and i said thats fine but when she went to cash me out, she was said that $13 was what i was actually getting.... very unimpressed.
The guy that who I am assuming was the boss/owner was very rude to my girlfriend thinking is was funny but he wasn’t and came across very rude. Wasted our time by barely buying any clothing not worth selling to them. Go somewhere else or donate your clothes to a shelter.
The website says they are open till 9. The sign on the front door says they are open until 9. But they close at 8pm. Corporate makes us say we are open until 9 but we are only open until 8. WTH??? In other words we dont care about you or your time one whit. The games they make you play to sell items here are absolutely insane. They will only give you cash for items until they use up the cash in the register. How does this make sense to anyone???Avoid this scam and buy and sell your items on poshmark or another website.
This place is the rudest place i’ve ever been too. they have no clue what they’re doing and they’re making platos closet go down hill quick. they rip you off and only give you $1.50 for shirts and $3.00 for jeans. DO NOT SELL YOUR CLOTHES HERE. it’s nothing but a waist of time
Dont bring your clothes here. They ask you to leave them so that they can go through them. You call the next day to see if they have went through your items and are than told you signed a sheet to donate them???? Ahhh you tell them no you did not. Be careful, JAMIE and DEJA are thieves.
First off the lady try to get me for my shoes try to give me a very low price and i told her they were not cheap that shes crazy and when i left the store another lady walked out and said she was making fun of the shoes the need to fix there customer service because its the worst by far

2022-07-16The amount of deals you can get here is amazing! I’ve purchased so many cute items for such a small price. And it feels much better to recycle clothing than buying brand new

2022-03-27I’ve been here a few times and it’s pretty cool, though I never found anything I liked enough to actually buy. The last time I went an employee was spraying down the entire t-shirt section with some nasty kind of perfume, which made staying inside the store intolerable and makes me very unlikely to return because scents like that make me gag.

2022-05-05If you’re trying to sell your clothes to this place then I have one suggestion: DONT. It’s 100% worth it to drive the 20 minutes to Clifton Park. The Albany store smells and looks disgusting and the employees will ask you if you’d like to take back the items they didn’t want. If Platos dosent wanna pay money for these clothes why on earth do they think I would give them for free when all they’re gonna do is upmark them like crazy. Horrible and owners should be ashamed

2022-05-29I hate this place so much. First, They wouldn’t buy my clothes because they “smelled like a bass.” Keep in mind I had just returned from an overnight fishing trip with my uncle. I had probably $400 worth of clothing with me. After they refused to buy my clothes they asked me to leave because My odor was unpleasant to other customers in the store. What the hell is wrong with you guys? I felt personally attacked. I will never be returning. WORST RESTAURANT EVER!!!

2022-06-17This place advertises selling and buying clothes but they dont buy any clothes. Theyve had a sign by the door for months that says were not currently buying. But....theyll take your clothes for free (just so they can upmark them like crazy). Dont come here, go to Clifton park.

2021-08-10Friendly & helpful staff they buy & sell clothes, bags, sneakers, and jewelry. If you have clothes that is name brand or popular fashion they definitely will take it has to be items that people will buy not just anything your not going to get alot but its better then nothing if its something your trying to get top dollar your better off selling it on your own cause they are going to low ball you. The store is more towards womens but they do carry mens clothes, sneakers. They got some gems but better be the first one and go early in the morning cause itll sell fast. One persons trash is another persons treasure. They do have items that are brand new but most are hand me downs. Prices are little bit high but you can find some steals.

2021-11-22According to what Platos page and Google says...they give 40-50% of original price tag. Well I brought them an article of clothing had had tag of $75. I was suppose to get the 40-50 % and they tried to give me me $5. The total of articles I had totaled$258 and they offered me $32. Really... Rip off.
